KING FRANÇOIS I BOOK OF HOURS (1578)
A dazzling masterpiece of the French Renaissance.
This small prayer book is bound in enamelled gold and gemstones. It was purchased in 1538 by King Francis I of France as a gift for his niece. The gems consist of carnelian (two intaglios and eight cameos), rubies (27 polished pieces), turquoise (24 cabochons) and rhodolite (one faceted stone in the book’s clasp that has been described as tourmaline since 1942). Most of the rubies were mined from the Mogok area of Burma (now Myanmar). Based on historical considerations, the turquoise could have originated from Persia or possibly Uzbekistan, and the carnelian from either India or Saxony. The faceted rhodolite from India or Sri Lanka, was most likely added to the clasp between 1842 and 1884. [view large]

This is Expressions of Light 16, done more as a personal project than anything else, but used as my 2014 Christmas card, too.
Deliberately referencing Alphonse Mucha's long-haired ladies in this piece. That thing he does with curls... 🤩
I used Prismacolor pencils over watercolor, over an ink drawing, for this piece. In the arch on top, the centers of the ellipses contain carnelian cabochons.

I’ve been down a rabbit hole wondering about medieval jewelry (and if I can reproduce it despite having no metalworking skills, to which the answer is mostly no) lately & I figured I would share the fruits of my museum collection searches for other medievalists/hobbyists/reenactors/nerds.
Jewelry of the 13th Century Anglo/Francosphere
Tumblr media
TL;DR
Metals: 🟨 gold(tone)
Stones: mostly 🔵 cabochon, rarely 💠 simple cut, some carved 🗿 intaglio or cameo
Stone Colors: warm blues, emerald green, purples, burgundies, reds
Materials: enamel, 💎 gemstones (garnet, Ceylon sapphire, ruby/spinel, emerald) or glass paste imitations, ⚪ semi-precious stones (pearl, lapis, jasper, carnelian, coral, turquoise, porphyry)
Settings: bezel (oval and rectangular); ⚜️ intricate metalwork; more visible and textured metal than modern jewelry; more mixtures of stones and colors than modern tastes
Motifs: ◯ round, ✤ quatrefoil, ✙ cross, ✸ star (even numbers of points), ♣ trefoil, ❦ floral, 🐉 animals, 𝕬 inscription
Formats: brooches, ornamented clothing, rings, pendants, circlets, cuffs (rare)
A detailed look:
Some forms of jewelry that were very popular in the Roman Empire and are again today were just not the thing in the middle European Middle Ages. (Earrings, for example, seem to have barely existed. This is partially at least because ears were covered--by coifs and caps, hair, and (for women) braids or the chin strap and fillet/wimple/gorget.) In fact, a lot of the places we would put jewelry against our skin today were covered.
This left some other options:
Jewelry on Clothing
Medallions
Okay, these aren’t jewelry, strictly speaking, but they’re metalwork ornaments associated with a person.
Enamel Mitre Medallions

OA 3437 and OA 3438 Before 1291, Ile de France Louvre, Paris photos (c) Musée du Louvre / Stéphane Maréchalle 2015
Cloisonné and plique enamel over gold and copper, with decorative motifs of trefoils, quatrefoil, and stars in a palette of dark blue and green with accents that may once have been ruby red.
Appliqué Medallion
Tumblr media
# MRR 256 13th c., Limoge Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée du Louvre 2014
Gilded copper (though most gold is worn off) with quatrefoil champlevé enamel in emerald green, lapis blue, and white or off-white.
Brooches
Perhaps the most prevalent medieval jewelry item in the Anglo & French regions. These were worn at the shoulder for men and breast for women, often anchoring a cloak, or to close the collar. As the ornate fermail and double-ring brooch suggest, these ran the gamut from practical to incredibly decorative and ornate.
Garnet & Silver Gilt Animal Ring Brooch; Green and Blue Glass and Gilt Ring Brooch

Right, # M.28-1929 13th c., England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Cabochon garnets or carbuncles in the gilded silver brooch (L), perhaps once paired with smaller stones in the eyes of metalwork animals that bite the pin bracket. The right brooch, also silver gilt, sports two glass paste emerald and sapphire "gems" in cabochon. It was probably a lover's token; it reads (in Lombardic-lettered French) IOSV ICI ATI VCI or "jo su[i] ici a t[o]i v[o]ici" which I might translate as "I am here with/belonging to you, look!"
Ruby & Sapphire Ring Brooch; Sapphire, Garnet, and Pearl Fermail
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left, # 6808-1860 1275-1300, England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Right, # OA6287 1250-1300, France Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée du Louvre
Blogs often claim that stones were only polished en cabochon until the 16th century, and that medieval jewelers couldn't cut gemstones. But this 13th-century gold ring brooch (left) pairs table-cut purple rubies with collet-set cabochon sapphires, and may evidence early medieval gem-cutting or reuse of Roman cut stones. The silver gilt fermail, right, includes pearl beads, garnets and sapphires both cut and cabbed, and one glass paste cabochon. Both are intricately textured, with punchwork (L) and floral metalwork, probably cast and then attached (R).
Double Ring Brooch with Sapphire and Glass "Emeralds"
Tumblr media
# M.26-1993 13th c., England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
This gold double brooch is so small they think it was for a woman or child. Central sapphire cab is flanked by glass paste "emeralds" in bezel settings and metalwork featuring two animal heads.
Jewelry on the Body
Rings
Many are probably familiar with the signet ring, used for pressing into sealing wax, which could be intaglio-carved gemstone or metals. There were also a number of decorative and/or talismanic gemstone rings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Sapphire in gold is the name of the game when it comes to rings in the thirteenth century; even the purple stones on the left are purple sapphires. (Sapphires were said to aid chastity, purity, and the effectiveness of prayer.) For larger stones, the bezel often has claws added (L); the central ring is an example of a full claw setting that modern viewers might find surprisingly tall. Naturalistic flourishes are added (C & R); these might be pre-cast then attached to the base (R).
Pendants
We equate pendants with necklaces, but their medieval applications also included wear as badges, from headpieces, and on horse decorations.

Statue Jewelry
From here, we get into the really ridiculous stuff; the previous categories could be relatively everyday (as much as ornamentation reserved exclusively for the wealthy can be an everyday thing) but the following examples are astonishing displays not necessarily for wear.
"La Couronne" de Vierge et l'Enfant d'ivoire de la Sainte-Chapelle
Tumblr media
# OA 57 B 1250-1300, France Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée de Louvre
This was not even a crown for a person, but rather for a painted ivory statue of the Virgin Mary, holding her infant son. (Though circlets, even set with stones, were sometimes worn as part of women's head dress.) It's incredibly ornate gold, set with pearls, garnets and rubies, sapphires, and turquoise (?) en cabochon.
Anneau de Saint-Denis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
# MS 85 BIS 1200-1215, France Louvre, Paris photos (c) Musée du Louvre / Daniel Arnaudet 1990
This astonishing piece, which is ring-sized but now displayed as a cuff on an ivory hand, is made of gold and displays every possible gemstone appearance characteristic of the period. The front piece has a central sapphire and is surrounded by quartz with red backing (mimicking ruby/garnet), amethysts, pearls, and sapphires, some set on yellow backing (mimicking turquoise?). Most are en cabochon on this face, but two are faceted and two intaglio. Were this not enough, the three other 'faces' of the ring are set with gems as well, two cameos (probably sapphire and garnet?) and one amethyst intaglio set in ornate gold filigree.

Okay Alex, buckle up, I am several hours late but here is my SU DE thots. Please feel free to critique/add characters (i thought abour doing gems for Piss and Fuck but wanted to leave that to you if you so choose)
Harry - Idocrase, on back of right hand, egg shape cabochon
Kim - Peach Eosphorite, lower back, trillion cut
Jean - Kyanite,  left cheek, oval cabochon
Trant - Grey Spodumene, throat, octagon cut
Judit  - Lazulite, right shoulder, marquise cut
Dora - Yellow Brucite, forehead/third eye, octahedron (think like a D8 shape)
Harry/dora - Ludlamite
Harry/jean - Bornite
Harry/kim - Wavellite
Klassje - Cobaltite, third eye, sphere cabochon
Titus - Carnelian, chest, rough tumbled angular
Cunoesse - Cuprite, cheek, raw crystal
Cuno - Jasper, left eye, oblong triangular rose cut (think peridot in show shape)
Ruby - Scorodite (ruby felt too easy), upper back, irregular shaped cut
Garte - Nickeline, stomach, raw polished cabochon
Dolores - Rutilated Quartz, forehead, round cabochon
Evrart - Golden Zircon, left palm, princess cut
Lely - Larimar, right shoulder, vertical rectangle cabochon
Scab leader - Boleite, chest, raw chunk
Joyce - Magnesite, stomach, vertical oval
All of this is more so just the concept of gems as a living being rather than any of the plot of SU, so it's not gonna be like how certain gems have certain jobs, I mostly based it on their colors in game OR colors I associated with them and vibes from the gem
Harry's placement is representative of his relationship to the world around him. A nod to both his past cruelty as an RCM officer and his past kindness as a teacher and coach. As well as the fact that, at least what I see of Harry in the game, he tends to give all of himself into the things he does and what better way to symbolize it than to put the entirety of his being (his gem) on his hand. The egg shape is representative of his new beginnings and capacity to change because of the amnesia
I originally wanted to place it on Kims solar plexus chakra, so just under the ribs, to symbolize his sense of self and his confidence (at least in contrast to Harry). But I decided to change it to the root chakra, the base of his spine, to represent the stability he offers to Harry in the game, Kim is a source of balance to Harry during the case and Kim himself is very stable and even. But placing it on his back also represents his vulnerabilities and his weakness at the tribunal when trying to tend to Harrys leg he doesn't prioritize his own safety and turns his back to the danger
I chose his cheek because it felt right. Specifically Jean felt to me like a character where 'turn the other cheek' felt like a phrase fitting him, whether that be the semi implied past he's had of doing so to Harry, or the direct instance of him being unable/unwilling to turn the other cheek in the final tribunal for Harry's screw ups pre game.
Trant's is in the throat chakra spot because it represents communication and he talks a lot :)
Judit's is kinda representative of her attempt at distance from Harry in the whirling, trying to turn a cold shoulder to someone she's unfamiliar and uncomfortable with
Dora is the third eye chakra for representation on intellect and to be in the same place as Dolores' gem was
Klassje is also because of the chakra and the representation of intelligence and intuition, as well as to connect her with Dolores as she's another woman Harry semi idolizes
Titus is because, to me, the chest feels like a spot of strength and courage, and is a place he keeps covered when coming face to face with Harry, making it a representation of the defense he has around Harry and his desire to keep his community safe from the law
Dolores is because the forehead has always been representstive of inellect and knowledge, something she's said to have lots of, as well as most of human history associating the head with power and glory (think crowns to represent important figures) - HM anon
FUCK YESSSS all of this rules so hard i am internalizing it. thinking about harry rediscovering what his gem weapon is . thinking about the fusion capabilities. rubyklaasje "we just fused, nothing else happened." thinking about harry getting fucking poofed and then reforming.
the fact you even thought of the cuts is!! so cool to me!! god god god i love all these sm . making me think really hard about SU again and the interesting ways that imagining the people as gems could affect their dynamics.....
btw piss has an uncut citrine on his left thigh and fuck has an oval cut rubellite tourmaline on the back of his left hand : )) those r just my gut feelings

The Agates
Fantastic news this week, gang!  Courtesey of Our Blessed Benefactor, we have three, count ‘em, THREE new additions to the collection.
Agates have the range, darling. These three stones, each with their own secret talent to share, demonstrate the elegant diversity of their family name.
First on stage, we have Cluster Grape Agate: Star of another recent post here at the studio. Reviews raved, “rocks I want to EAT”
Tumblr media
Well, everybody, now I have my very own Eating Him Agate. Found in Andestite pillow lava, Grape Agate grows in the vitreols of igneous rocks, and must be removed with a gentle hand and a fine, finessed brush.
Tumblr media
^Here pictured against some very fitting grape vines.
Next act: Enhydro Agate. Her brilliant orange coloring suggests she’s also a Classic Carnelian.
Within this stones walls hides a pocket of water, ancient as the rock she came with. Glossy as any magazine cover, this stone is ready for the silver screen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And our grand finale: The delicate Iris Agate. Carved into an iridescent butterfly cabochon, she’s a natural star. held to a lavalamp- or a stagelight- a thin gossimer rainbow shimmers through her opacity.
Tumblr media
youtube
This delicate beauty and her cousins illustrate the variety even a single mineral type can have, an how beautiful that diversity can be. Round of applause for tonight’s act: Agates!

Just in time! This beauty is appropriately called the Autumn Leaf butterfly 🍁 scientifically known as Doleschallia basaltide. Their striking wings are accentuated with a perfect Tiger's Eye cabochon to reflect the colors of the wings, a bright pop of Carnelian, along with a beautifully contrasting rose-cut Amethyst between the two delicate tails of the hindwings 🍂💜✨
Check out this lovely nature adornment on our site!
