Year Two: More Boy Trouble
Tumblr media
Chapter List WC: 2,243
4th September, 1992
Violet didn't get the chance to speak to her friends before Transfiguration.
She stumbled into the classroom just as the final bell rang, the door slamming shut behind her. She was panting and looked out of sorts, having ran across the castle and down two flights of stairs to make it on time.
Only a few students bothered looking back at her to see what the commotion was. She silently hoped the professor wasn't paying attention, but no such luck. Professor McGonagall was staring at her, arms crossed over her chest. Violet rushed over to the only empty seat left, next to Caroline.
She had no problem with sitting next to the blonde girl, but it was out of the ordinary, as she usually sat with Susan Bones. Ever since they got back to Hogwarts, Caroline had barely been around, staying mostly with Susan. She didn't necessarily ignore the other three, but they seemed to be more roommates than friends lately. Violet tried not to worry about it, as it had only been a couple days, but the same thing had happened the previous year.
Violet tried to sit and pull out her things as quietly as she could, but the professor continued to stare.
"Um... Sorry, Professor McGonagall. I got stuck in Ravenclaw tower." Her cheeks burned with embarrassment from the attention, as other students had started to stare now too, "I took Luna Lovegood, a first-year, some lunch, because she was going to miss lunch, 'cause of the Slytherin prank-"
"Miss Ellis?"
She looked up nervously, "Yes, Professor?"
"I heard about the incident this morning. As you weren't technically late, not points will be deducted from Hufflepuff. However, do please start paying closer attention to the time."
"Yes, of course! Thank you, Professor."
McGonagall continued to watch the girl for a moment, assessing her. Her eyes widened slightly, as if she'd suddenly realized something, before turning away quickly to start the lesson.
Once all the students began to work on the beetle-to-button spell, Violet tried to talk to Caroline.
"No Susan today?" Violet turned to her friend when she didn't receive a response. The girl was staring down at the table, poking a brown button with the tip of her wand, "Caroline?"
"Hm?" She finally turned to look at Violet, "Oh, sorry. No, she wasn't feeling well, so she's gone up to see Madam Pomfrey."
"Ah. Hope she feels better soon..." Violet turned her focus back to her own beetle, which sat dumbly as Violet tried again and again to turn it into a button.
The silence felt awkward, so Violet tried again, "I ran into Eddie Carmichael today."
Again, no response. This time she decided not to say anything else. If Caroline didn't want to talk to her, then fine, she was just content to focus on the spell.
After another few minutes, Violet slammed her wand onto the table with a huff. The beetle still hadn't changed and she was beyond frustrated.
"Need help, Miss Ellis?"
Violet startled, turning to see Professor McGonagall standing just behind her. She had that look in her eyes again, as if she'd recognized something in the girl. Violet couldn't think of what it could be, though.
"Sorry, Professor. I just can't seem to get this spell."
The professor simply nodded, her neutral expression making it impossible for Violet to guess what she was thinking.
"Yes, the Mutobuprestis spell can be quite challenging. Most students aren't able to do it."
Violet's eyes widen, "Then why have us try it?!"
The professor only smiled, "We can't all be transfiguration masters, now, can we? Sometimes we must fail in order to succeed."
Violet had to refrain from rolling her eyes. She had no clue what that meant. Failure and success are opposites, how could they be true at the same time? She shrugged it off as the professor walked away. For the next hour, despite knowing she'd make no progress, she continued to practice the spell.
When class finally finished, she looked forward to talking with her friends about what happened with Eddie earlier that afternoon. However, as she made her way out of the room, she realized her friends weren't right behind her. She paused at the door, looking back to see Hannah at the front of the room, talking to the professor. Aimee had come to wait with Violet, though.
"She wanted to ask about the homework." Aimee explained, "What was that at lunch, with that Ravenclaw girl?"
"Luna? She needed help. We met on the train, remember?"
"Yeah..." Aimee's face scrunched together in distaste, "She's so strange. Why would you want to be her friend?"
"That's rude!" Violet argued, "She's a bit odd, but she's still rather nice. You'd like her too, if you'd just talk to her."
Aimee was about to argue, but Hannah interrupted, "Ready?"
Violet was starting to get upset that her friend was being so rude to someone they hardly knew, so she could only nod her head for fear of saying something in her frustration. She glanced back at the professor, her discomfort growing as she realized the professor was staring at her again. She wanted to ask what was so interesting about her, but Hannah linked their arms together and started to pull her out of the room.
Violet had no way of knowing that Professor McGonagall wasn't necessarily staring at Violet because of who she was, but because the young girl reminded the elder of another student she once knew; a gentle, kind boy, who the girl shared a striking resemblance with.
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
The trio of girls went to the Hufflepuff common room, wanting to spend the free period before dinner getting a head start on their homework. When they were all settled on one of the couches in the common room, Violet finally got the chance to talk to them.
"Eddie asked me out!" She blurted out, slapping a hand over her own mouth at the near-shout.
"What?!" Both friends shouted back, dropping their books and parchment to lean over to her.
"Eddie who? When? Tell us everything!" Hannah gushed. Aimee nodded emphatically.
Violet told them the whole story, starting from the moment she left the Great Hall at lunch with Luna, up to her arriving at Transfiguration that afternoon. When she finished, she was startled to find both of the other girls staring at her with concern.
"What?"
"Well, I was going to ask if you would tell him yes, but..." Aimee hesitated, looking to Hannah for help.
"It doesn't sound like you want to say yes. It sounds like you would rather never see him again, really."
"I wouldn't say that..." Violet thought it over, though. She had no interest in Eddie, not romantically. She didn't like anyone like that, never really giving boys a second thought, "Okay, maybe I would. He's nice enough, but..."
"You don't like him." Aimee stated.
Violet shrugged, "No, not even a little."
"Well, you've got to tell him," Hannah threw her hands up in surrender when the other two turned to glare at her, "You've got to tell him something! Don't leave the poor boy wondering."
"I don't want to hurt his feelings..."
"Hurt whose feelings?" All three girls jumped, turning to look behind them at the new arrival.
"Hey Cedric! Oh, a boy!" Hannah pointed to aforementioned boy, "Ask him how you can say it without hurting his feelings!"
Cedric backed up a step, eyes widened in alarm, "Ask me what? Why're you hurting my feelings?"
"Not yours, Ced." Violet tried to explain, "Someone asked me if I'd like to hang out with him, but I don't like him. I don't want to hurt his feelings, but I don't want to, so how do I say no?"
Cedric hummed, posture slackening before he tensed back up, his eyes slightly squinted when he looked at Violet, "What boy?"
"Eddie Carmichael, a Ravenclaw third-year, why?"
"No." His voice had an edge to it, "Absolutely not. He'd only hurt you."
"Okay, Cedric..." Aimee tried to calm the boy, "She doesn't even like him."
"Good." He nodded absently, staring off into space as his jaw tensed.
"So, how do I tell him?" Violet tried again, concerned about Cedric's uncharacteristic behavior.
A moments pause before he focused back on her, "Just tell him no. No explanation needed."
"Oh... Okay, sure."
Cedric nodded again, his focus elsewhere. His hands were clenched at his sides and Violet worried that she had upset Cedric somehow. They were finally friends again, she didn't want to anger or upset him.
She didn't get the chance to ask him if he was okay before he walked away, heading into the boys dorms.
"That was weird, right?" She turned to her friends, but both of them were focusing on their homework again. It took Violet several tries to get her attention focused on the History essay she had to complete by Monday, her thoughts too jumbled with all that had happened that day.
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Violet didn't except dinner to be a fiasco, as she'd figured she'd been through enough drama in three days to last the entire year, but of course she wasn't so lucky.
She was on her way into the Great Hall when she heard someone from behind shout her name. The trio of girls paused at the doors, turning to see none other than Eddie making his way over to them. Violet didn't get the chance to even say 'hello' before she was pulled into someones embrace.
"What-" her exclamation was cut short when she saw it was Cedric, smiling brightly down at her, "Ced?"
"Go along with it," He winked, releasing her, but keeping an arm around her shoulders.
"Hey Violet!" Eddie was smiling at her, but it dropped slowly as he glanced between her, Cedric, and the arm around her. His tone turned sharp, "Oh, I didn't realize you two were... together."
"Yep!" Cedric's own tone had a bite to it, "Heard you asked her out. No hard feelings, Ed, I wouldn't have expected you to know."
Violet had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. She nearly lost it when she looked to her right, both Aimee and Hannah staring at the interaction with comically wide eyes and gaping mouths.
"Right... Could've said something, Violet." Eddie crossed his arms, his sharp gazing moving to the girl. She tensed, confused. He seemed to pick up on it, because he continued, "Instead of leading me on? You could've just said no."
Violet's humor died as guilt hit her. She hadn't meant to do that, she'd purposefully wanted not to hurt him!
"Careful, Carmichael," Cedric edged forward, dropping his arm from around Violet, moving to stand in front of her, "Wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea here."
"And what's that?" Eddie took a step forward, nearly toe to toe with Cedric.
"That you're desperate."
Anyone could feel the tension in the air, and Violet didn't want the two boys to start fighting, much less over her, so she moved forward slowly. She held Cedrics hand in both of hers, their fingers interlocked as she looked at the other boy.
She kept her voice even but soft, "I'm sorry, Eddie. I meant to tell you, but I didn't want to hurt you."
Cedric kept his eyes on the other boy, but he squeezed her hand in assurance.
Eddie just huffed, eyed her top to bottom, and muttered, "Whatever, I didn't even like you anyway. Just thought you'd be easy..."
He stomped off into the Great Hall, and Violet had to hold onto Cedrics hand for several long moments to prevent him from chasing after the other boy.
"Violet? You alright?" Hannah's voice brought their attention back to the moment. Violet quickly dropped Cedric's hand, stepping away from him.
"Yes. Yes, alright. Thank you, Cedric." She couldn't meet his eyes, so she stared at her shoes, warring emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
"Violet?" Cedric tried to step closer to her, but she only stepped back again.
"I'm okay, really. We should get going now, don't want to miss dinner."
Violet looked up briefly, trying to avoid Cedrics gaze. Her emotions and thoughts were all over the place, and she couldn't pinpoint any one thing to focus on, except for the loud chatter in the hall behind them.
She turned on her heel, pausing only briefly when her eyes met a shockingly grey pair. She barely registered Draco Malfoy as he stood in the entrance of the Great hall, rushing past him. Her friends all followed her in, but they were slower, each eying Malfoy hesitantly before moving around him. None of them had noticed him there, so they had no idea he'd been there nearly the whole time, having heard everything.
Violet stayed quiet throughout dinner, barely eating. She was too stuck in her own mind. She couldn't decide what was worse; the guilt she felt for hurting Eddie, the anger she felt at Eddie for treating her so poorly, the comfort she felt when Cedric came to her aid, the confusion at the need to feel that comforting touch again, or the sudden realization that Draco Malfoy had likely heard the entire, uncomfortable conversation, and what was worse, that that realization didn't bother her.
The rest of the weekend, she tried to put the entire situation behind her. She completed all of her homework, she hung out with her friends, including Cedric, and even went to the Hufflepuff quidditch practice Sunday morning.
She was so preoccupied that weekend, trying to forget Eddie Carmichael's existence, that she hadn't realized the boy disappeared for the rest of the weekend, and most of the following week. He'd been admitted to the infirmary with a "mysterious illness", one that only a certain white-blond haired boy knew the immediate cure for...

TUA Comics Edits
edits of Caroline in the tua comics, she has a completely different story in this
So she has the concept that Lila has in the show when her parents were killed in a home invasion but instead of the handler it was AJ Carmichael who took Caroline in and raised her as his daughter, Caroline grew up admiring the umbrella academy and wanted to be a hero and use her powers for good but AJ always denied her of that and that she should stay in the commission, she eventually becomes friends with five (unlike in the show) and Caroline retires from the commission to try to be a hero (this is during the dallas arc) eventually five and Allison hire her to take care of Vanya (Viktor in the comics) while they deal with a mission and eventually the two of them get close.
(yes Caroline still has her powers)

Rivers of London: Amongst Our Weapons Spoilers Below!
First things first, absolutely loved Caroline popping up in this one! And with a girlfriend, what a treat! I also really loved another smooth inclusion of an incidental trans character (Sam Carmichael) who exists to prove again that Peter Grant's world is diverse in magical and mundane ways.
Re: Nightingale retirement and broader foundation of wizard education: I think I'm a fan! I've seen the concept explored in some fanfictions and really loved it there. I've always felt that Peter would grow to be more magically powerful and take on more responsibility for shaping magical London, so this announcement feels right.
Like feels like an extension of all those times Peter suggests doing something and Nightingale is surprised but ultimately impressed. There's this undercurrent in the entire series of finding new ways of doing things and building community after strict segregation forced people apart. (I'm not letting myself dream of a police abolition plot in this series, so this is as good as we'll get I think.)
Just pleased as well that after nine entire books the series still entertains and delights me.

stardew headcanons - twin peaks edition
HELLO all! with the little amount of free time i have, i've been binging twin peaks - a very quirky show about an fbi agent coming into a small, otherwise very normal and humble town, and quickly realizing just what lurks under the surface... being the city girl i am, i've always longed for what it would be like to live in such a rural town, getting to know the townsfolk, falling in love with the small things it provides... and solving murders of course! anyway, naturally i'm going to want to compare it to stardew valley... see below!
note: name credit to @angelsdelicate because her name headcanons are literally top tier! <3
Tumblr media
THE TOWNSFOLK
*the sheriff, shane jackson, a man who's got his heart in the right place but he himself finds that easy to forget, leads the valley's sheriff department, along with its deputies: deputy samson carmichael, lovable but rather simple-minded and deputy sebastian hawthorne, quick and quiet. and don't forget about miss penelope routier, the lovely secretary that deputy carmichael seems to be head over heels for, and mr. demetrius darnell, the local scientist that helps with forensics and autopsies. the team usually deals with the mundane lost pets and cheating spouses- imagine their surprise upon the telephone call from the local fisherman, willy lyons, about a body floating in the lake...
*the stardrop saloon, owned by augustus chandra, is always lively and bustling with folks in and out. they are known county-wide for their homely diner-style meals and strong black coffee, along with their lovely waitresses: emily calvin, a young woman with the brightest smile in town, and jodi laurent, older than her counterpart but with just as enough pep. jodi's husband, kent richards, currently is awaiting his parole hearing, hoping to be able to make it back to the valley after his year in prison- jodi wishing desperately he doesn't get it.
*and with every small town, there's always an ultra-rich tycoon waiting for the next buck- the valley's very own mr. pierre rosenburg, with the wife, caroline, and the daughter, young abigail. mrs. rosenburg barely recognizes her husband anymore and doesn't bother with the shady deals he does in the dark- but abigail is determined to take him down, doing her own sleuthing on what her father really is up to when he leaves for his many business trips.
*the local high school is rather small and underfunded, but the students there feel loved and closely knit. everyone knows everyone else. among the few hundred, there's the expected valedictorian, maru darnell, with her outstanding academic record and eager commitment to do great, alexander mullner, the football team's star quarterback who seems to love getting in trouble with girls, and abigail rosenburg, the beautiful and cunning daughter of local businessman mr. pierre rosenburg.
*there's the small hospital, led by doctor harvey mccarthy MD and helped by many nurses, such as mrs. pamela wilson RN. the two have their own baggage- dr. mccarthy having abruptly moved here after nearly a decade of work in a city across the country, unwilling to state why, and nurse wilson battling an addiction to alcohol, wanting to get better for her estranged daughter...
*there's young miss haley o'henry, who dropped out of high school in senior year to marry trucker clint o'henry, unfortunate enough to get coerced by his seemingly empty promises to provide for her, leaving out how he in the end just wanted a maid he didn't have to pay for. while he's out making 'deliveries' [which she highly suspects isn't the case], she lets alex mullner come over to give her the attention she desires so much - not even trying to think about the consequences if clint ever found out. she dreams of alex saving her from her mistake of a marriage.
*some other oddballs in the town include linus wickerson, a quiet man who seems to live in the forest, only coming out to the saloon every once in a while for a hot cocoa, mrs. leah white, a shut-in artist who refuses to leave her home after the unexpected death of her wife, and elliott mariposa, the valley's paper editor- eccentric and keen to many of the town's residents' secrets.
*sheriff jackson knew things were becoming far too much for small-town cops like him and his team. and with that, a new person popped into town, dressed professionally with a clean haircut and fancy shoes - an air of deductive intellect to them... they shook hands with the team, deputies hawthorne and carmichael sharing a suspicious look upon the newest addition to the department, and with a smile, said: let's get started! [insert your farmer here!]
THE RELATIONSHIPS
*penny and sam had a few flings throughout the time they've worked together- penny thinks he's rather handsome in his uniform and sam loves her sparkling green eyes- however, the two both don't know what to do with themselves when they are alone, sam being rather shy and penny believing men need to step up and make the first move. eventually penny realizes sam just might not be very mature and she sees the writer elliott, who gives an air of extreme maturity and haughtiness that rather turns off penny, but she's trying to send a hint to sam to fight for her, so she continues to see him despite not being in tune with her. sebastian catches on to this office romance, stopping sam in the hallway- what are you doing? fight for her! and staring down elliott whenever he has the chance!
*kent had been involved in an accident, sending him in for 2 years, with parole. jodi never truly loved him, having married him out of spite to her rather controlling parents and running off with him in hopes he'd take her to better place. instead, he got caught drunk driving and sent to prison, leaving her a waitress barely making ends meet for herself. the only thing that keeps her motivated to live another day is caroline- with her husband out so often, the two came together lamenting their lives, having expected it to be so different when they were younger. the two would share a bottle of wine on weekends while her daughter at a friend's and husband out of town on some business trip- one night things had escalated with the two finding themselves in the same bed, not wanting to get up and stay in each other's arms! the two make plans of leaving their husbands but that's all they are- plans for another life.
*clint wasn't always this unshaven, hot-headed, greasy trucker- he had money and loved to spend it on shiny things- a fancy corvette, slick boots, a leather jacket- upon seeing how laid-back and free haley was, he simply thought it'd be easy to get her under his roof with his expensive car and wads of cash, to fold his laundry, wash the dishes... when she saw him for what he really was, she began to hate herself for getting caught up with such a deadbeat- cutting off her parents, dropping out of class, halting her entire life for this man that she couldn't stand to look at. he'd be so nasty to her the days he was home, the days he wasn't providng some relief to haley. she'd have alex come over, meeting him through clint no less- alex'd help clint with local deliveries- and would dream of how he'd be a far better husband to her, a far better lover!
*pierre had been a hotshot in his prime years, thinking he still is something women swoon over in his late-forties. his lack of self-awareness allowed for his ego to be inflated through the purchasing of a certain gentlemen's club up north- he chases after its young women employees, using up their young girlish charms as vitality to keep himself afloat... without their sweet words, suggestive touches, and nights where he can feel young again, he'd be bored- as simple as that!
AND THE MURDER
the town's sheriff department received a phone call one morning on february 24th, a body being found washed up ashore by the local fishermen, willy talking to sheriff jackson with a quivering voice. the boys take a trip to the pier, deputy carmichael sobbing as he takes photos of the young woman's body- nothing like this had ever happen in this small town. overcome with sadness, shane makes the call to the parents of miss delilah lalune [my farmer], the victim, to their unparalleled grief. the whole town mourned her together, her absence having an impact upon every nook and cranny of the town. her closest friends made it their mission to find what really happened to her- they knew she was in some sort of trouble but never in their wildest dreams thought it'd turn out like this and that and that and this- questioning suspects and analyzing clues- unearthing the story, it getting even deeper and deeper, with more dark and perverse parts of society coming out to the light...
