Platonic Readings of Ponyo (And How The West Likes to Ruin Everything)

We all love a good love story. It can be really satisfying to watch two characters slowly falling in love.

Unless they’re five. Then it’s kind of uncomfortable.

Welcome to the mildly disturbing world of the West taking platonic relationships and then forcing them to be romantic, even if the characters are five years old. All key quotes will be from the Japanese dub with English subtitles provided by Netflix.

All the anime I watched in high school is finally paying off.

“Ponyo… loves… Sosuke!”

Let’s start with some basic Japanese lessons. In Japanese, Ponyo says “Ponyo… Sōsuke… suki!” Ponyo uses suki, which is one of three popular ways of expressing love. There is aishite, a deeply passionate proclamation of love; daisuki, a more common expression to mean a softer love between couples; and suki, a word more suitably translated to ‘like’, which is more of a fondness, something used in a casual setting.

Wu argues that Ponyo ‘expresses her fondness for Sosuke’ in this moment (2016:197). The love that Ponyo displays for Sosuke here is something distinctly more childlike and innocent. It is little more that a proclamation of friendship or a slightly deeper bond.

“To become human, she requires a man that will understand and accept her.”

Granmamare does not use language that is inherently romantic – there is no mention of ‘love’. The phrasing of ‘a man’ implies a heterosexual bond which can be interpreted as romantic, but in and of itself, the sentence is mostly read as platonic.

And then the English dub happens. In her godlike voice, Cate Blanchett says, “To become a real girl, she needs you to accept and love her as she truly is.” This reading is inherently more romantic, using the dreaded L-word (not Lesbians, Scott Pilgrim, calm down) to force a romantic context onto Ponyo and Sosuke’s relationship.

“I’ll always love Ponyo, whether she’s a fish, a human, or in between.”

Here we go again with the use of suki. At this point, Ponyo and Sosuke are ‘beloved friend[s]’ (Wu 2016:199) and share a deep bond. This quote involves acceptance as a major factor of Sosuke’s relationship with Ponyo, and still uses the childish and censored suki to infer a promise more than a romance. They are not in love, per say, but perhaps there is a hint of something more when they grow up.

In the English dub, Sosuke declares, “I love all the Ponyos! It’s a big responsibility, but I’ll always love her.” This child is five years old. This sentence reads as a declaration of love and gives off more confession vibes. Yikes.

The original Japanese dub wrote Ponyo to ultimately be a piece about the friendship between two young children, capitalising on the nostalgia of youth and childhood friends to create a compelling piece that made me cry within the first twenty minutes of the film.

The English dub, however, made something almost creepy and difficult to watch.

And thus concludes my argument on sub v. dub and why sub is infinitely better 100% of the time. That is a joke, Twitter stans please don’t cancel me.

Stakeout ;

SUMMARY: steve harrington and dustin henderson go on a stakeout, searching for soviet spies.

PAIRING: steve harrington x fem!reader.

WARNING(S): mild cursing since dustin swears like a sailor sometimes.

NOTES: i hope you have a good day. ^—^

The Starcourt Mall was a shopping centre located in Hawkins, Indiana and a subsidiary of Starcourt Industries. The mall's opening in 1985 was inaugurated by Mayor Larry Kline. Both Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley worked at the Scoops Ahoy, an ice cream store, in the mall's food court. The place quickly became a popular hangout for teenagers and adolescents.

Although Starcourt appears to be a normal mall at first glance, it was actually built as a front for a secret Russian base, which houses the first Key built on American soil. This base was hidden far underground. Starcourt Industries is also controlled by the Soviet Union.

At the Starcourt Mall, Robin is translating the Russian message, rejecting Erica Sinclair’s request for more "samples". Her coworker Steve Harrington is not on duty, instead sneaking around the mall with Dustin Henderson using a pair of binoculars.

“You see anything?” Dustin questioned his partner in crime who is currently looking at shoppers through the pair of binoculars as the pair hid behind a planet display. “Uh, I guess I don't totally know what I'm looking for.” Steve sighed, longing for their search to end so he could return to the job that pays him minimum-wage.

“Evil Russians.”

“Yeah, exactly. I don't know what an evil Russian looks like.” Steve pointed out, mumbling.

“Tall, blond, not smiling,” Dustin presumed what the Soviets looked like, frowning as he looked around the perimeter of the mall as well. Steve, hummed since he was humoured by the teenager’s persistent demeanour. “Also, look for earpieces, camo, duffel bags, that sort of thing.”

“Right, okay, duffel bags,” Steve repeated the boy’s sentence in a groggy tone. After a few moments, something catches his attention. “Oh, you've gotta be kidding me.”

The tone in Steve Harrington’s voice intrigued Dustin Henderson beyond all recognition because he believed they found a lead in their investigation. “What?” The teenager asked in a hurried manner.

“Y/n L/n is talking with that meathead Mark Lewinsky.” Steve groans, squinting his eyes to ensure his eyes weren’t deceiving him.

Dustin peels behind the plant they hid behind, searching for Y/n before catching a glance at her. “She works at JCPenney. She’s talking to customers since it’s her job, you Airhead. You aren’t focused, just give me the binoculars.” Dustin briefly explained the situation before ultimately wanting to reprimand his superior of his binocular privileges.

“Aw, whatever happened to standards?” Steve ignored the young boy beside him. He continued to eavesdrop on the people who used to attend Hawkins High School. “I mean, Lewinsky never even came off the bench.” He added.

“Dude, you are the worst spy in history, you know that?” Dustin insulted the high school graduate before taking it upon himself to snatching the binoculars. “Stop, hey. Stop.” Steve swatted the teenager’s hand away as he continued to look at Y/n whilst Dustin was able to take the binoculars and use them to his advance to scout out the Soviets.

“I don't get why you're looking at girls. You literally have the perfect one in front of you — just go talk to her.” Dustin gestured towards the h/c haired girl who separated from Mark Lewinsky and started talking to other customers scattered around the mall.

“You know what? I don’t want to hear any more about N/n. Just…” He then transitioned to a hushed voice, regretting what he was going to say next. “Look for evil Russians?”

“Y/n,” Dustin said quickly to get on Steve’s nerves which seemed to work wonders.

“Seriously, if you say her name again...” Steve trailed off, looking over at Dustin before turning his attention back to the h/c haired girl.

“Y/n,” Dustin repeated himself as Steve Harrington fumed beside the teenager. “No, don't. No.” He waved his arms as a gesture to Dustin that he needed to stop whatever he was trying to achieve.

“N/n, N/n, N/n.”

“No, man, she's not my type,” Steve lied through his teeth and he came to the conclusion that he will go on with his fabrication. “She's not even... in the ballpark of what my type is, all right?”

“What's your type again? Not awesome?” Dustin poked fun at the adult’s taste in women. “Thank you,” Steve replies in a sarcastic tone as the young teenager hums.

“And, for your information, she's still in school. And she's... weird?” Steve’s tone was inquisitive, his eyebrows knitting together as he tried to come up with more excuses. Yeah… she's a weirdo. And she's hyper — always happy when she came to school. I don't like that she's hyper. And I think she did drama. And you know that’s a bad look.”

“Now that you're out of high school, which means you're technically an adult, don't you think it's time you move on from primitive constructs such as popularity?” Dustin practically insulted Steve, lowering the binoculars from his eyes.

“Oh, primitive constructs?” He repeated his sentence. “That some stupid shit you learned at Camp...” he gestured towards Dustin’s hat. “Know... Nothing?”

“Camp Know Where, actually,” Dustin corrected Steve, giving him a strained smile because he took pride in going to the camp for the summer. “And no, it's shit I learned from life. Instead of dating somebody you think is gonna make you look cooler, why not date somebody you actually enjoy being around — although I don’t know N/n all that well. Just look at me and Suzie for an example.”

“Oh, Suzie. Yeah, you mean, ‘hotter than Phoebe Cates,’” He didn’t believe that Dustin actually managed to get a girlfriend over the course of the season. “And, uh, let's think about how exactly did you score that beautiful girlfriend?”

Before Dustin could respond to Steve’s questions, a voice interrupted their discussion, “Harrington!” It was a feminine voice that the graduate recognized almost immediately.

The boys looked in the general direction of the spokesperson to see none other than Y/n L/n approaching them. Steve was like a deer in headlights, stunned that he was spotted.

As she got closer, Steve nudged Dustin in the ribs and signalled towards the binoculars he had in hand and silently demanded him to hid them. Not wanting Y/n to get the wrong idea.

Knowing that Y/n was bound to embrace him, Steve wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, gently rubbing her arm before pulling away for a few seconds.

“Have have you been?” She laughed, resting her hands on her hip. “Good.” Steve did not want to admit that he concluded not to go to college and was now working at a store that paid minimum wage.

“What are you doing here?” Y/n looks between the two, knowing that it would be rude not to include Dustin into their chat.

“Looking for evil Russians.” Dustin Henderson admitted, earning him a sigh from Steve who pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Okay?” Y/n giggles at the teenager’s peculiar response. “Well, my colleague, Vanessa, told me that you work at Scoops Ahoy. I didn’t know you worked there.” She looked at Steve’s brightly coloured sailor uniform that he donned.

“You didn’t?” Steve asks, checking the liability of her declaration.

“Yeah. I might have to come down there sometime when I’m on break to see what it’s like,” Y/n nods her head, looking around at the crowd just as a distance voice calls for her. She awkwardly laughs, facing the boys sheepishly, “That must be my manager. I should get going. See you around, Harrington.” She bids farewell as she left their side.

“Y-Yeah...” Steve Harrington stammered, watching as she disappeared among the shoppers. “Told you so.” Dustin Henderson laughed, pulling out the binoculars that he hid behind his back.

Fluff alphabet with Cate Blanchett with Luna(singer)

A – Anger (What was their first fight about? Any big or recurring arguments?)

They have a lot of fights about Cates flirty behavior towards people, she hated it so much especially since they weren’t really in the public eye so people thought Luna was a string along

B – Best (What would they say is the other’s best trait?)

Luna loves Cates smile, it makes her forget about everything. All it takes during a fight is for her to smile at her and Luna just losses all anger and smiles too.

Cate loves Lunas voice, she was a very classic sounding singer and Cate couldn’t get enough, there is gifs and videos all over the internet of Cate swooning when she watches Luna perform at Award shows.

C – Camera (How do they document their relationships? Who likes to take pictures? Or videos?)

Cate isn’t one to post anything on social media at all! But that’s all Luna has over her Instagram is pictures of her and cate or just cate because hot damn!

D – Dates (What are their dates like?)

Since Cate has such a big presence you too never really go out so you don’t have to deal with Paparazzi

E – Early (What was the first month of dating like?)

Very awkward, acting like you don’t know each other when you see each other on red carpets or any events, but once you weren’t in public there was so much cuddling and making love

F – Friends (How is their relationship with each other’s group of friends?)

Luna is friends with Sara, Sandra, Rooney and any other person Cate hangs out with at the moment. They wouldn’t be best friends but Luna had no problems with Cates friends

Cate is nice to lunas friends but they are young like Luna so she thinks they are pretty immature to be honest but anyone Luna likes she will like.

G – Gifts (Do they like giving each other gifts? What kind?)

Cate loves giving gifts to Luna, anytime she finds her something she thinks Luna would like she would pick it up she didn’t care the price of course.

H – Hugs (All things involving hugs)

They were a very lovey touchy couple behind closed doors. Luna loved hugging her close so she could hear her heart beat

I – Inside Jokes (Do they have any?)

Luna loved joking about Cates sexuality since for the longest time she claimed she would never have a relationship with a women

J – Jealousy (Who gets jealous easier? How do they show their jealousy?)

Luna got very jealous since she was so flirty and touchy with her co stars than the two wouldn’t even take pictures together at red carpets, she had no idea why though. Until one day they were both at the premier for Thor 3, Luna was there because a bunch of her songs were on the album plus she made a cameo, she had got there before Cate so she just stood and smiled as they were yelling “Luna over here smile real big” she had on a beautiful scarlet dress and her long brown hair was curled half up half down when suddenly it got really loud “Cate! Right here” Luna rolled her eyes hard in her head ‘wow another event she ignores me at’ she goes to walk further into the red carpet when she feels a hand on her arm pulling her close and was shocked when it was cate, she smiles pulling her close “over here guys” cate leans down and whispers in her ear “just smile love” Luna blushes as she feels cate kiss her forehead, the paparazzi just eatting this up

They both kissing each other, they both love being close to each other

L – Love (How do they first say those three words?)

Cate just blurts it out during an argument, after Carol Luna was pretty suspicious about Rooney’s relationship with Cate, she wasn’t suspicious about Rooney liking Cate since she was Dating her boyfriend but she didn’t really trust cate which lead to the huge fight “for Christ sakes I love you!”

M – Movies (What kinds of movies do they watch together? Is it a regular Netflix ritual?)

They love all marvel movies so Luna was so excited when Cate got into marvel

N – Nicknames (Things they call each other)

Cate called her the usual names. Darling, love, baby, honey, sweetheart. All of which Luna loved and she always blushes which cate loved.

O – One (Tell us about the moment they realized they were with the one.)

They were in Hawaii just on a trip since Cate had just wrapped a huge movie, they were sitting on the beach just watching the sunset when Cate looks over at Luna. Her brown hair in a pony tail but pieces touching her cheek gently, her blue eyes almost glowing from the sun, suddenly Luna turns to her and smiles “is something wrong” Cate shakes her head “no you are just so beautiful”

P – Pizza (What is their favorite food to eat together?)

They love Chinese food and get it at least 3 times a week

Q – Quit (Do they break up? Almost break up? What happened?)

They never fight enough to where they almost break up

R – Rainy Days (How do they comfort each other on dark days?)

When the anxiety of fame and depression get to Luna she breaks down hard but cate is always there to hold her while she cry’s and Cate says the sweetest words to her “it’ll be okay I promise, I’m not going anywhere I love you so much”

S – Soft (Something one of them did that turned the other into absolute mush)

After the Thor Red carpet Cate always loved to gush about her, in an interview a woman asks “how is it dating someone that is not only younger than you but also so established at this age” Cate smiles “it’s a joy, she is so versatile in everything she does her voice can sing anything than when she acts it’s so natural for her! She is just is perfect, her range is amazing I couldn’t be happier!”

T – Texting (Do they text each other a lot? What do they usually talk about over the phone?)

They do text a lot when they aren’t together which is most of the time, Luna sends her a lot of Tik toks to make cate laugh

U – Unique (Tell us about some of their odd habits that surprised one another.)

Her vocabulary is truly amazing, she will be talking when she says a super long word and Luna laughs “what does that even mean?”

V – Vanity (Something they’re proud of in themselves and their partner)

Cate loves how Luna dresses while cate has like 10 stylists Luna does her own hair, makeup and picks her own outfits for events

W – Wedding (Tell us about your wedding head canon if they’ve gotten that far. Or if not, have they talked about it?)

They talk about marriage and neither are in s rush to get married since Cate had just gotten out of a long marriage

X – X (Something they hate about the other)

Cate hated how Luna could get anyone’s attention without even trying, when she walked into the room everyone’s eyes went onto her

Y – Youtube (What are they like online? Do they post about their relationship constantly?)

They don’t post on YouTube but since they were both famous there relationship was pretty known

Z – Zoo (Are they into animals? Do they want pets? What kind?)

Luna had a mini farm at her house in LA, she had pigs, chickens and cats which cate loves.

Mafias sweet revenge Pt 1

What type of justice is this?!

How can you break the pencil in the first day of court?!" I asked shocked from what the judge had decided for my uncle.

"My father is better than half of the higher ups you serve! But you'd rather turn a blind eye to them because you get money with every win they have! Be it using illegal ways or not! How the fuck is this fair!!" Alex shouted, trying to walk towards the judge in sheer anger.

Lexi then stepped forward in the mist of the group of people that were becoming riled up "Don't you have any family? If they were suddenly announced to be hanged for no good bloody reason, what would you do?!" Lexi screamed tears rolling down her face as her brothers tried to calm her.

"Don't worry dad justice will be served!!" Alex said his hand going towards his waste band, which was covered by his blazer to get his gun out but he was to slow in the action, Sam had realised and pulled him out of the court before he could do anything

"You fucking bastards!!" I heard some one in the court shout which brought be out of my trance like state, and my shock turned into pure furry, I moved forward before anybody could stop me.

I gripped the the judges collars with both hands and pulled him down from his all mighty throne to my eye level.

"Luis !Luis stop!" Michael shouted as he tried to pry my hands of the son of a bitch.

"Luis" I heard the faint voice of my uncle but my anger was too high so I ignored his call.

Looking at the bastard's face "Is this your justice?Do you feel no remorse?! Look into my eyes and tell me! What do you call a man who killed an innocent?! A judge or a murderer! Put your hand on your heart and tell me!!" I shouted the man didn't even look at me, the nerve of this man.

Michael was still pulling at my arms "let go of him man!!"

"sir please let go" Is this BASTARD for real? he isn't even looking at my eyes and he wants me to let go. Not happening, not till I get my answers.

The little minions by his sides also trying to calm me but it wouldn't work, not when this bastard can't even look at my face for doing what he just did "Please be calm sir"

I wanted, no needed a reason "Is there ever justice without humanity?! Did you ever think when you decided, that this man has a family that he loves?! Did you think about us?! Did you?! Look into my eyes! if you have a heart, look into my eyes judge!!"I shouted

"Speak! Who's fucking bitch are you!! Who's!!!!" I waited for an answer or a reaction but none he was just turning his face away from me, avoiding my eyes. Fine.

"Look at me! And look at me good!! Because from this day forward I will NEVER, let you see the light of day again!!!"

"LUIS!!!!" The shout of my uncle pulled to me and I looked at him, the sight of him with soldiers at either side of him, and the sad look of defeat that was shown in his eyes, eyes that once held a crazy, happy look tore my heart to pieces and my arms dropped to my side. My thought were going hay wire as i watched them start to guide my uncle towards the exit of the court room, suddenly a breeze flew right passed my ears, and a heart wrenching screams of the women in the room tore through the place. Our people all unsheathed their hidden guns and pointed it in the direction the bullet came from, windows were breaking with men in black running in, at this point all hell had broken lose and people around us were panicking looking for an escape, it was is though my legs were chained to the ground for a minute.

This time, I heard the second shot,

My breath got caught in my throat as I see him look at his chest, grabbing it, then looking, his eyes searching for something amidst the battle and land on me, looking straight into my eyes...

"Dad!" I hear Alex scream as he runs into the court room and sees his father, he then ran towards him covering him and shooting enemies trying to get close to his father, who was swaying on his feet.

It was as though everything had slowed down, I forgot about the fight and dashed towards him pulled out both of my guns and shot the fucker who had hit him.

I let my guns fall out of my hands whilst in shock "No! No! No! N-N-No Un-uncle Al" I teared up, catching him from the front mid fall and slowly kneeling, holding his weight in my arms and hugging him tight the bullet must have exited through the back where blood was gushing out attempting to cover the bullet hole I cover it with my hands, staining them red. Two men were protecting me and Uncle Al, stopping any one from coming close. His chin was rested on my shoulder, He starts coughing the strength of it coursing through my body too.

" I did good right? Hmm" and a tear leaves my eye, I couldn't bear the thought of him leaving "You were a reward that god gave to the whole f-family in this life-" another wave of coughs raked his body.

" No! PLEASE GOD NO! Don't leave! I'll take you to the hospital a-and it will be alright! It will all be alright d-don't w-wor-ry!" I said crying; my hands trembling over his wound, my Ming fumbled with trying to fund a solution, anything to help him. "We'll get you to a H-Hospital, d-don't w-worry!" I say tears staining my face. I frantically looked around for someone who wasn’t busy fighting "CALL A DOCTOR!! SOMEONE CALL A FUCKING DOCTOR!!!!" I shouted whilst holding up his weight, he slightly pushed himself away to look at me using my shoulders to keep his balance. I could practically feel his body trembling to stay up.

"Its all right you don't h-have to, It's all r-right ... J-Just p-promis me that you'll look after the fa-family..." he says out of breath and coughing up blood, some of it spluttering onto my face, His tear rimmed tear rimed eyes stared back at me.

"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! JUST S-SHUT UP!!!!! WHY WOULD I LOOK AFTER THE FAMILY WHEN YOUR HERE?! WHY WOULD I TAKE CATE OF THEM! YOU SAID YOU W-WOULDN'T EVER LEAVE ME AG-AGAIN! S-SO P-PLEASE DON'T LEAVE, YOU P-P-PROMISED!" I said sobbing my hands shaking and grabbing his hand with my stained hands; he smiles again two big tears rolling down his face

"Sssssshhhhh, d-d-don't cry when I leave, I'm not s-sad but h-happy I'll be seeing my family I m-missed-" cough cough " my brother, my nephew, sister in law a-and my beautiful wife" he said a coughing fit taking over, more of his blood splattering on my face... I felt frustrated not knowing how to help him, angry tears roll down my face, he wipes my tears away with the pad of his thumb as a father would do... "take care of A-Alex for me...I L-L-Love you b-both"he whispered giving me a smile as he wiped yet another one of my tears...as I lean into his touch, the warmth of his hands leave me, his head falls back onto my shoulders his hands fall limp to his side, I catch his body trembling under the weight "N-N-NO!! NOOOO! P-PLEASE! NO! Y-YOU C-C-CANT! Y-YOU CANT LEAVE ME!!! WAKE UP!!!" I scream my hands tremble as I push his face back and grab him from the shirt collars shaking him, wanting him to wake up, "YOU PROMISED ME! YOU FUCKING PROMISED YOU WOULDN'T LEAVE ME AGAIN!! OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES PLEASE! IM B-BEGGING YOU! OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!!! ", his once colour filled face, was already turning pale and his lips starting to lose their rosy colour... I hated him, I hated him for leaving me alone in this colourless world....

I slowly lay his body down, holding his head up whilst taking off my blazer and rolling it up and placing it as a cushion on the floor. I suddenly felt a pain shoot through my left shoulder nearly causing me to lose my strength but I then gently lower his head my tears dropping onto his face, mixing with his own. I gently use the pad of my thumb and wipe the tears of his face and close his ghost like glass eyes, and looked at him one last time. I felt numb...numb but furious.

The sound of gunshots were now much more loud and clear, just as clear as the volcanoes that could be seen to erupt any second inside of me. I picked up both my guns from floor, blood soaking into my shirts left arm staining it red, and rose like the grim reaper out to collect the souls of those who had angered me.

The two men protecting me looked hat me " protect his body" my voice cane out cold. Tgey nodded at me and protected him a few others joining to help them. I saw Alex fighting with two men, he had hit one, turned his back towards him and attacked the other guy thinking the first was out. However the man had taken out his pistol and aimed it right at Alex BANG!

"Too slow fucktard" I thought as his brains splattered over Alex, who had knocked out the second man and was looking at me with sorrow and anger as he nodded his head as a thank you, and ran to his fathers bodies side protecting it. As I carried on shooting until one of the guns bullets were finished and I had no more ammunition to reload, the other holding only 3 bullets.

I shot around two more fuckers when the gun was suddenly kicked out of my hand and a fist connected with my jaw jerking my head to the side. And I felt a gun pointed at my head I turned to face the idiot his smirking face raising my shackles, I smiled back catching him off guard and slammed his hand down causing him to shoot my abdomen as a reflex. The pain was there but blocked out by my anger, I started to laugh unable to move my left arm due to the injury, and pulled my empty gun out with my right hand and whacked the back of it against his head , causing him to fall backwards so I leaned over to him and whacked his face with it over and over again, several times blood splattering against me. “Have fun in hell.” HE shook his head trying to resist his fate, fear taking over as he cried louder. I picked up the gun he droped sticking it into his mouth the fear in his eyes bringing me a small amount of gratification. Bringig a smile to my face

I let his body drop limp and stood with a wide smile plastered on my face, a smile that would racke fear into even the devil himself and shot some of the fuckers trying to escape, killing some but letting the others get away with injuries so that I could find out who was be hind this.

I looked around to assess the situation, and my eyes zoned in on a boy, a young boy surrounded by rats trying to help him rather than shed is blood, how strange. I chuckled as wiped my blood soaked guns against my top, not that they got any cleaner, my shirt was just as bloody. I signaled for one of my men

“Kill them all but the boy, bring him to me alive and kicking” I watched as they killed all the men whilst the boy cried in fear. I reloded my guns sticking one back whilst keeping the other in my hand. Intresting...

I skipped towards the boy and knelt down to his eye level, unable to hide my pleasure at his fear. My smile as broad as ever. The hall had quietened down to silence as everyone watched me like a hawk.

I looked into his eyes, glistening with unshed tears, he looked either 1 or 2 years younger than me, trembling in fear. Like a cornered white rabit, unscathed, without any stains of blood... how unplesant. He must of senced my change in mood, scooting back, not that it would help his case. I looked at the tattoo on his hand, the sign of that bastards gang. Upon closer look my suspicions were proven true. making me laugh.

“P-please dont k-kill me! I’ll- I’ll tell you anything! ANYTHING! Anything you want! I’ll tell you!” HE begged in desparation kneeling as he did so. I tilted my head... was this kid hit over the head or somthing? I pulled his hair earning a scream, NOPE. No bumps, clean. He’s just stupid. I stood as i contemplated what to do

“Stand.”

He looked at me in shock. BANG! I shot the ground right by him “Id suggest you dont make me repeat myself”

“T-Th-Thank you! Thank you so m-much!” HE stumbled as he stood, repeating his thanks over and over, I could only grin at his stupidity.

“Go.”

“Thank you! Th-Thank you! You wont regret this! I promis! Ill meet you buy the bridge next to Burger King tomorrow at 12pm! I promis you wont regret this” He said slightly bowing and wincing in pain. Probably from one of our punches... I nodded, as he turned to leave, the small smirk he had when he looked down when bowing didnt go unnoticed by me, I could only chuckle, How naive.

“Luis! Why the hell are you tetting him go-”

BANG! BANG! BANG! Click

How annoying I was out of bullets again, so I flung the cheap gun to the side and pulled out mine, I stalked towards the boy who was now facing the floor, trying to turn over, so I, being the kind person I am lent him a foot, kicking him over to face me.

His tear stained face mixing with blood as he wiped them away “JUST KILL ME ALREADY! WHY ARE YOU DRAGGING IT OU-”

“Do you think i dont recognise you?” I said as i looked down at him, the question silenceing him immediately. The fear in his eyes reaching a whole new level.

“H-How”

I laughed, and crouched down once again to his level and pulled him in by the scruff, talking quietly

“My family may not have recognised you, or even your people, excluding those protecting you, with your disguise... But your father should have taught you better, his youngest son how to blend into the crowd before allowing you to leave the house... Or even how to tell a decent lie, or maybe” I draged out, In mock thought “maybe you left without his knowledge, with your pathetic friends”

I looked behind me, my families eyes trained on me in confusion, unaware of our conversation. I reached into his pocket and faced the phone towards him

RAMBLIN REVIEW: Silver Surfer: Black

'Silver Surfer: Black' is an epic tale with okay writing (Donny Cates mostly pulls it together but I'm still not really sure what all happens at the end) and i n c r e d i b l e artwork. This stuff is BALLS CRAZY and really carries the story. No, I didnt always know what was happening but BAI GAHD it is great to watch. Imagine a movie with an okay plot but phenomenal soundtrack and shots and people you like. It's not the A+ you wanted it to be, but DAMN if it isnt still a good time. Uh, recommended for comics fans or people who like art. Penciller Tradd Moore and colorist Dave Stewart GO FOR IT here and it's THE main selling point. I dont mean to be vague but you gotta see it for yourself. There are some incredible sequences.

yall, katie mcgrath did not one, not two, but three interviews this week. i’m shook.

obligatory supercorp content:

"I think that's why people have taken it to heart, because in us making it our own, I think people have been taking it for themselves. Yes, it's similar to what you've seen before, but only in its infancy. I think where it is now, it's become something individual and it's become something that is just theirs, and it's just the show's, and it's just the fans', which I think is what makes it compelling and what's made it so popular as a relationship, that it just exists now as its own thing."

i think what she means is the fans don’t give a shit what the show does, and that’s okay?

"I feel pretty good this year because Lena may not know, but Alex has lost her memory and if Alex doesn't know that Supergirl is her sister, then I think it's OK that Lena doesn't know," she says. "When that happened, I was like, this is amazing, it's no longer all on my shoulders. Her own sister still can't tell, so I'm fine now. I'm like walking in and feeling great now, now that I'm not the only one who doesn't know."

i can actually imagine katie seeing this and i’m cackling.

"See, this is the thing. You don't have just one person with a loaded gun behind Lena's head. The bullet is the knowledge that Kara is Supergirl, and before, it was Lillian who had that, but now you have Lex, who's even more of an unknown quantity, and he's holding that information, and it's almost the information that will completely destroy Lena. He could pull the trigger anytime, and that's an amazing dramatic point to have in a show of at any time, if that trigger's pulled, what that would mean not only for Lena, but what that would mean for Kara and Supergirl. So it's this sort of extra added switch to a bomb that could go off at any time."The common goal of finding and catching Lex helps bridge Lena's relationship with Kara and her relationship with Supergirl, McGrath says. "That kind of unifies them…so you get a more friendly relationship with Lena and Supergirl then you had for a season and a half, and then at the same time, the betrayal of Eve has had the result that I think Lena becomes a whole lot closer to the people that she does trust, and the main person she trusts is Kara, so ironically what that has done is it has brought her closer and more trusting to Kara, which from a viewer's point of view, because you know that Kara has been keeping a secret from her, is so bittersweet to watch because you see Lena start to rely on her even more, but at the same time you're going, oh god, but only if you knew. So it's just an amazing, dramatic quality and this extra sort of delicious ingredient to this whole storyline."

IT’S FINE I DON’T WANT TO CRY OR ANYTHING.

“If and when she finds out that Kara is Supergirl,” McGrath agrees, looms large over Lena right now. “I can’t tell you when it’s going to happen … but if it did, I think the results of that are utnold for what that could mean for Lena, her psyche, her emotional wellbeing, her friendships.” Unlike the recent betrayal by Eve, with her true friend Kara, “I think it’s a greater betrayal, and I think it will have more lasting results on her.

Ironically, what it does is, rather than make her more wary of the people she trusts, it makes her cling onto them even more. So her relationship with Kara is ultimately strengthened by it because she’s driven toward the people she trusts because she’s had yet another person taken away from her — which, especially with Kara, for the viewer watching it, is so heart-rending because she’s growing closer to the friend who she trusts when ultimately the viewers know that this person is also lying to her, for very good reasons and not to hurt her or anything.

is it stupid to hope that last bit matters?

[When we spoke to you at the end of your first season on the show, you said you were happy that Lena was the only person who didn’t know Kara’s secret because it made their relationship special. Two years later, we find out that even Lex knows her secret. Do you still feel that way, or are you dying to join the club now?] No, I still feel that one of the loveliest parts of the Lena-Kara relationship is that Kara can be human and frail and not a hero with somebody — that she can just be Kara Danvers, rather than having to be Supergirl. I think that’s a wonderful thing for Kara to not always have to be the person who has to solve every problem and face the world. I think she needs that. For as long as it may last, I’m very happy for it to be Lena that has that relationship with her. Up until Alex had her mind wiped, Lena was the only person who could have that relationship with her. For Kara, it’s not the same with Alex because Kara knows what’s missing in the relationship and Alex doesn’t.

and literally none of this answer is about how lena. rip me.

anyway, the wild part of this interview spree is that one of them was with the mary fucking sue.

One such factoid that emerged was that Lena’s birth mother was Irish, like McGrath herself. “This is an illustration about how lovely and sweet our writers are,” McGrath laughed. “They do put in little things for us to make us smile.” Further than that, McGrath gushed, “This is why we’re so lucky with this job, that everybody on it cares about you as a human being.”

mhmm, yeah. that’s why they did that.

In the most recent episode, “House of L,” we learned that Lex, like everyone but Lena at this point, knows Supergirl is Kara Danvers. How did that happen? McGrath theorizes that Lillian Luthor told him. “He didn’t figure it out on his own because he’s no smarter than Lena is,”

Lena knows how to prepare herself for hard days, even so, and some of that preparation comes down to the gorgeous fashion McGrath gets to sport (sometimes in places where a cocktail dress isn’t appropriate, but we’re not complaining). No Lena outfit has made as big an impression lately as the plum three-piece suit she wore to work with her brother: “I think, when a woman wants to feel elegant and powerful but in control, a very beautiful, tailored three-piece suit goes a long way to making you feel that … and I think that was part of what was going on there with Lena.” McGrath actually brought the idea of the suit to the costumers, inspired by photos of Cate Blanchett in suits that were “sill feminine but totally in control.” Indeed, Lex may have his “Lexo suit,” but Lena has perfect couture, and I think we all know which one is better.

At the same time, though, Lena will be dealing with her guilt over, well, everything that’s happened: the mayhem that Lex’s nefarious deeds cause, Red Daughter’s existence, and James experiencing the side effects of the Harun-El serum. But she won’t let that guilt get her down.“A lot of what drives Lena in the second half of the season is this need to fix those wrongs that she feels responsible for,” McGrath says of how Lena will react to Red Daughter. “[This] is an ongoing theme within the show: Her research, [which] is created for good, is taken and perverted, and it is often the source of all evil for the series. This has happened again to her. So much of the world is dealing with the results of her actions again. So she becomes very focused to fix it, and a focused Lena is a force to reckoned with.”

not for nothing, but i keep trying to think of a real world equivalent to this specific conundrum and it’s like... people who build weapons probably don’t operate under any illusions that what they’re doing is going to hurt people if used by the wrong people (and lol that in this instance the wrong hands were lena’s. and by lol i mean holy fuck.) but like... is lena mark zuckerberg?

(also i think this interview was done by email, otherwise it’s super weird that a lot of katie’s quotes include parenthetical asides.)

[I knew Lex was playing Lena, because it’s Lex Luthor — but I found myself sort of wishing he wasn’t, especially in that moment when he tells Lena about the time he met her mother. How did you feel playing that moment?] He had me in tears. I was weeping down my face. We didn’t do that [scene] many times because I was crying so much. In that moment, I think he made Lex very human, and I don’t think we were expecting that. I don’t think we were expecting a vulnerable, human, relatable Lex Luthor, and I think that’s what’s really interesting about what Jon Cryer has done with Lex. He really [shows] all of these very different sides. There are moments, like you said, where you’re like, “Oh, maybe he isn’t a bad guy. Maybe there’s hope for him. Maybe we’re going to see a Lex Luthor that might be a hero.” (And maybe you don’t want to see another person be horrible to Lena, but that might just be me projecting.)

so anyway, i have this headcanon that lena believed using the harun-el on lex would actually fix him in the head, but this makes just feel bad for lena. like, at the end of the day when someone says they need her, she’s going to bend over backwards to provide. ugh :(

I think her confidence is completely shaken, but at the same time, it has hardened her resolve. She is a woman that when she is faced with a problem, she doesn’t retreat from it — she attacks it. Yes, this has completely shaken her, but it has focused her mind to go forward and to fix the problem. Her drive and her focus to fix this is sort of second to none.

Although Lena and Supergirl are coming at the same issue from different points, they ultimately have the same end goal. They both believe in helping people and the greater good and saving mankind, which are all lofty goals.

ANYWAY THIS INTERVIEW IS THE WORST.

"They both believe in the greater good and helping humanity," McGrath says. "They just come at it from two completely different sides, like the left wing and the right wing, but they ultimately both want the same thing and the search for Eve and this need to catch Lex sort of unites them and you see them all working together, but at the same time in doing that, Lena is still dealing with the secret that she helped Lex, and she has to carry that through as well."

i would like to go back in time and never have read this sentence with my own eyes. ms mcgrath is forbidden from interviews for another two years, thanks bye.

Lena definitely feels some guilt, but she's also been betrayed, and McGrath says we won't see her "totally deal with it.""I think she can't. I think if she starts to unpick it, she'll unravel completely, so what you get instead is it pushing Lena to be extremely focused on catching Lex and catching Eve and a focused Lena Luthor is a very dangerous thing. With her single-minded pursuit, you should be very wary, and I think that's what they've done is rather than her sitting around and unpicking straight away all the stuff that's happened, it's just lit a fire under her to go fix it, because she feels so responsible.

this part is fine. totally fine. katie has some genuinely good insight into lena’s ongoing trauma and how that drives her, BUT THEN.

But not only does she feel responsible, but she can't tell anybody truly 100% why she is responsible, because she would have to admit that she was helping Lex."

What will we talk about after seeing it? Of the posters of Carell and Chalamet, who are hooking movies after movies on the big screen. That the movie has a 'punch'. That, if there is something that fails, however, in the plot, is that it can be a bit repetitive: could not the drug issue have been approached from a somewhat less hackneyed point of view?

I really love how in episode two, when Lucy has just met Lockwood and is pretty on the fence about him and they’re standing in the park and he lights the flare and holds it over his head she asks him, “why’d you light that? so you’d look cool?” and he denies it! there are shades and lurkers closing in on them—he had a practical reason, he’s not just posing! not just trying to impress her! how dare she suggest that.

but in episode 8 when they’re busting into the cemetery to save George, Lockwood is the one to say “let’s draw our swords and kick the doors in so we look cool and like we really know what we’re doing.” he’s letting her in on the performance—letting her see through his facade but also letting her participate in it. yeah, they’re faking it. it’s all a giant act to make it seem like they have a clue. but they’re faking it together.

look, i get that i’m the local Cate Blanchett Lesbian and that makes my opinion automatically suspect, but th*r ragnar*k, like c*nderella, was a movie that should have starred her. not merely cast her in a supporting role. if you needed a tall pale white woman with high cheekbones to glare at your heroes and do virtually nothing else, you should have cast someone whose only skill was doing just that, NOT an actress with major theatre credentials who’s won two (2) oscars. watching the scene where she crushes mjolnir is genuinely painful not because i have some attachment to a hammer, but because you-know-whomst is supposed to be feeling a whole fuckton of complex, intense emotions just then--pain and grief at his father’s death, anger at l*ki, maybe a degree of helplessness that he’s being called on to fight yet ANOTHER of his dead dad’s battles right when he needs time to himself--but watching him grunt and flex his eyebrows trying to emote even 1/10th of that opposite cate blanchett is just. like. sorry! it doesn’t work. she gives hela as much emotional complexity in the .5 seconds of the “i thought you’d be happy to see me” line as johnstopher gives th*r in the entire movie. and i don’t think that it being a comedy is an excuse because the mjolnir scene? is supposed to be one of the emotional climaxes of the movie. combining the death of odin with the destruction of mjolnir is showing us the stakes--and it should be the emotional stakes, too. but chaddigan couldn’t do it. when the emotional burden falls on him he blows it. it’s honestly difficult to watch.

Okay I’m gonna do a rundown of all my favourites because making me pick one is just mean. (Also at one point in my notes on the following books and films I just wrote “Bagels” and I can’t for the life of me think what I might have meant or autocorrected that from. Maybe a shopping list started to take form. I don’t know.)

Possession - 2002 (I’ve tried the novel, and A.S. Byatt has some beautiful prose but her structures sometimes do my head in, so never finished it. Ignore Paltrow as best you can and enjoy lush Victorian Gothic mystery and the ending is one of the most poignant things I’ve ever been pleasantly surprised with on film, and it leaves you wondering about many, many things…)

Jodhaa Akbar - 2008 (You could put Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the worst commercial ever made and I would watch it. Costumes, scenery, and, as a friend once put it “I’m not sure how they did it, but they just had a sex scene without any sex.” Bravo.)

Elizabeth - 1998 & Elizabeth: The Golden Age - 2007 (The costumes! The caMERA ANGLES!!! The compli-fucking-cated mess that is Elizabeth I.)[Okay Tumblr won’t let me embed any more trailers, but those ones are easy to find, they’re out there.]Vatel - 2000 (Any foodie who is also a fan of The Sun King and his era will dig this one. A great score, baddie Tim Roth.)Alternatively, in the same era: A Little Chaos - 2015. Storyline is a little weak, but it’s so beautiful and the cast is great and the M U S I C. Kate Winslet. Alan Rickman. Helen McCrory. STANLEY TUCCI.)Also: they’re not films, but TV shows - honourable mentions to the Spanish series Gran Hotel. It’s like a good version of Downton Abbey, only sorta on crack and with a tonne more murder mysteries; and while I have some Issues with its so-called hero and some comparatively weirdo plot-points in S3, overall, it’s fantastic and I’m obssessed. Please don’t mix it up with the Italian re-make which looks horrible in every way. Like, main actors dressed in a poorly-sewn-table-cloth-bad.And shout-out to the new CBC/Netflix series Anne. I will defend this show to the DEATH, alright? They’ve gone bolder and fresher and have managed to involve period realism in a moving way while retaining the sunshine-and-pinafores element that so many people love about L.M. Montgomery’s work. There’s heaps of women with production credits, and I think it shows. Geraldine James is already my favourite Marilla after one episode, and I feel like R.H. Thompson (HEY JASPER DALE HEEEEY!) and Amybeth McNulty are likely going to become my favourite Matthew and Anne, too. People have complained about this series going off-book and in particular some have condemned it sight-unseen because the writers/directors are putting a feminist spin on it and OH GOD THEY SAID FEMINIST QUICK WE GOTTA SET EVERYTHING ON FIRE BECAUSE CHILDHOOD IS RUINED, but honestly it’s just perky and gorgeous and scrappy and nobody can tell me to my face that Kevin Sullivan didn’t go all the fucking way off-book from the very beginning so I am not gonna sit here and insist that the Megan Fallows Anne of Green Gables was perfection which could never be improved upon because that’s just a plain lie. It was nice and it has its place but it’s time for some new blood. (And NOT the telefilms they’ve also come out with recently with Martin Sheen, bless his heart, but they took a brunette child actor and dumped an atrociously stark box of red hair-dye on her before drawing on her freckles and then telling her to please play everything theatrically to the back of the house even though there is a camera ten inches from her face.) I am HERE FOR ANNE. RIDE OR DIE.

AND NOW, FOR BOOKS!

After that you might assume my L.M. Montgomery recommendation would be Anne of Green Gables and sure I won’t say DON’T read them, but for my money the Emily of New Moon trilogy is more my jam and I wish to God and Netflix in all my prayers that there might someday be a decent adaptation of them.I was really into Cassandra Clark’s Abbess of Meaux mystery series for a time, but then things went a bit pear-shaped in what I think was the fourth(?) book and everything was OOC and honestly I haven’t caught up on the later books after that and they seem to be self-published now but I am a sucker for nuns and mysteries so I’ll probably get back into it when I have time.

The Princess Priscilla’s Fortnight and The Solitary Summer by Elizabeth von Arnim. Vacation-reads! Beautiful prose, some wry wit, and fun hijinks. If you’ve ever wanted to run away and live in an isolated cottage in the wilderness for a little while, these are for you. [ETA: I recently got my hands on a copy of The Jasmine Farm so THANK YOU to one of you who recommended it I am loving it so far only I don’t see the appeal in Andrew so wtf Terry you can do better.]Edward Rutherfurd’s geographical history novels–Sarum is the classic to start with, but the others I’ve read are very good, too. (London, New York, and I’m now working my way through a first-edition of Russka.)Amy Levy. A M Y L E V Y. Criminally under-recognized Jewish Victorian novelist and poet. Novellas Ruben Sachs and The Romance of a Shop. (RS a beautiful and bittersweet story about the conflicts between love, identity, and expectations, and some would say a response to George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda. TRoaS reading a bit like a less treacle-sweet variation on Little Women, where four sisters try to make their way in the world by setting up their own photography studio in late 19th century London.)The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgkin Burnett. Colonialist racism appears in this one, so be warned. Still the book is a THOUSAND times better than the utterly dreadful adaptation known as The Making of a Lady. Jane is better, Emily is better, Walderhurst is better, pretty much EVERYONE IS BETTER. The pacing is better. The plotting and suspense make actual sense.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. A classic, and the grand-daddy of every secret-identity superhero.

The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. Like, it makes me MAD how good these books are.

And last but not least, a non-fiction selection in Vere Hodgson’s WWII diaries: Few Eggs and No Oranges. Nothing else has ever brought the experience of living (or trying to) under the shadow of the bombs and the threat of invasion quite like these diaries. Fascinating details, engagingly written, and at times a stark reminder that the Allied victory we take for granted in our history could by no means be counted on by the millions who dwelt in daily uncertainty.
