It’s long past sunset, verging on true night, and Hawke and Anders are squeezed into one bedroll together, as has been their custom since parting ways with Isabela at Seere. His back is pressed to her front, her left hand splayed across his chest, thumb brushing the ropy scar puckering over his heart. The steady pulse under her palm is the most precious thing she has ever known, and Rivain is cold at night, but she can barely feel anything but Anders.

They didn’t sleep like this in Kirkwall.

The bedroll is so much smaller than her mattress back in the manor, and maybe she shouldn’t like the change, shouldn’t like the way his body is pressed to her own like two pages in a book, limb to limb to limb, but she does. She likes how warm he is. She likes the scent of him, herbs and electricity and mint, heady in her nose.

Maker, she even likes the root digging into her back, because it means that she’s here, he’s here, they’re here, they’re alive, they’re safe.

A shiver wracks through her body.

Yes, they’re here. She’s here. She’s also bloody cold.

Hawke heaves a sigh, burying her face in the crook of Anders’ neck. Her nose must be frozen, because he shivers at her touch, grumbling slightly, and she shouldn’t laugh, she really shouldn’t— but somehow, she can’t help it.

“Sorry, dearest,” she murmurs, kissing the so-thin, so-precious flesh there in apology.

fandom: dragon age ii pairing: anders/female hawke (adelheid) rating: T word count: 2k summary: Meredith is dead, the Chantry is gone. Sailing away from Kirkwall, Anders isn't sure where he and Hawke stand. But if this is his end— well, it's a good one.

It takes them barely an hour to get away to Isabela’s ship.

This is… easier than he’d imagined. Not that he’d imagined it often, really; mostly, the day that he finally put his plan into place, when he thought of it, ended with— well.

It’s a bit doom and gloom, but it would be a lie to claim he expected to survive. Anders has been lying so much lately, and so often, and always to the people who deserve it least; he doesn’t want to do it anymore.

He thinks of Hawke’s furrowed brow when she offered him the ingredients he asked for, her hands pressing over his own and squeezing, her eyes so careful, careful in a way he’s never known her to be—

His stomach drops. It’s been doing that a lot lately.

Isabela doesn’t look at him the same. He— he’d expected that, just like he’d expected Varric’s dry condemnation and Sebastian’s rage, which roared like Andraste’s pyre, like the chantry all aflame over his shoulder. He’d even expected Fenris’ betrayal, in a way, though granted, watching him fall under Hawke’s greatsword hadn’t been as painless as he’d predicted.

That’s the rub of it all, he thinks. At the centre of all his misgivings, all his unease: Hawke’s protection.

i mean ok i could say something rly sappy abt Personalities and Emotions but anders is so fucking here for delly’s muscles. her arms distract him on the daily. he has injured himself during battles getting distracted by his gf’s sick biceps. on delly’s side it’s probs his nose. she thinks his nose is adorable. she kisses it all the time bcos shes dumb and soft

8. nicknames? & if so, how did they originate?

oh hell yeah. anders calls delly ‘heidi’ all the time, and the gang kinda try and tease them for it for all of abt two seconds before she pulls her red hawke angry face and they all mysteriously forget they ever heard it. but also he calls her ‘liebling’ sometimes, bcos it’s cute. he doesnt tell her what it means for ages, even when she pesters him. dell’s not rly the nickname type, but she’ll call him ‘dearest’ when no one else is around and hes always a little 🥺

10. who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?

delly for sure. this is partly bcos she insists on getting him a fuckload of food whenever they’re at the hanged man (and also when hes at home) bcos she doesn’t think he eats enough, and she’s a massive mother hen. but also she just pays attention a lot; she’s sorta like the mom watching fondly as her entire family eats whenever they all get together, making sure everyone’s taking care of themselves but trying not to be obv abt it

12. who initiates kisses?

in the beginning, usually anders. delly’s not inexperienced by any means but she’s just super hesitant abt affection. touch-starved and confused u kno. fun times. but once things have settled in a bit it massively skews to her; she’ll kiss him whenever and wherever, and doesn’t care who sees. he super does not mind

14. who kisses the hardest?

oo toughy. probably delly, but i mean, they’re both super passionate? it’d be a toss-up, im just going w delly bcos she’s clumsier w it

again probably delly. anders is more disciplined abt making sure hes awake, plus hes always super paranoid when he’s not at the clinic that someone needs him, so he’s up and out like a shot

tbh i think they’re both way too chaotic for this. neither of them have their life together that much. they both often forget to eat lunch anyway

bethany is…. torn? on one hand her and anders are only civil rly like half the time. on the other, he makes delly so happy, and delly is bethany’s favourite person, so she’s overjoyed to see it. and before leandra died, she sort of….. hesitantly approved? she was a bit overwhelmed abt the parallels between her and malcolm and delly and anders (highborn — technically — lady & roguish apostate) tho

sebastian, aveline, and fenris think they rly just make each other worse, bcos neither of them rly get along w them (rip). merrill thinks it’s sweet; isabela jokes a lot abt them, but isn’t particularly of one mind either way. mostly she’s glad the pining is over. varric is v taken w them from a writer’s perspective; probably the only reasons he doesnt publish a serial abt them are 1) the whole chantry thing and 2) delly would murder him

22. who cooks more/who is better at cooking?

dont let anders cook. delly’s good at the basic stuff, but nothing fancy; anders is bad bad bad

oh anders for sure. delly blushes w her whole body so everybody fucking knows whats happening anyway. she absolutely makes him pay for it later

this is not a theme song (bcos the only theme song i can currently think of is scooby doo) but nfwmb by hozier is the ultimate handers song

28. what do they do when they’re away from each other?

i mean they’re adults capable of being apart so they dont pine or sob or go bella swan catatonic. but they’re not often apart, after da2, bcos they like. have a family together and live together. when they are tho they write each other letters, which always take an age to reach the other person, and somehow manage to straddle the line between ‘stupidly sappy’ and ‘concisely informational’ in a way that rly only delly could do

nothing even breaks my heart they are my one happy ship. but uhhhh when delly gets pregnant w posy she temporarily becomes little spoon bcos both anders and justice rly love just going to sleep w their hand on her belly and feeling the little life in there, and it is The Softest Thing. when she kicks for the first time, anders notices almost before delly does

1. how did they meet? what was their first impression of one another?

they first meet the way canon introduces them — she’s trying to get the grey warden maps, he’s…… doing his healer do i guess — but they do not have good first impressions of each other. which is kinda understandable; delly’s a nightmare to be around at the best of times (snappish and stoic and quiet, v short-tempered, kind of just… a cactus with a soft inside) and she’s impatient when she meets him, so she’s especially awful. and she’s also combative so he’s like (ง'̀-‘́)ง why the fuck are u here i’ll deck u

anyway, he calls her a ‘little girl’, i think is the dialogue? and she’s immediately like (ง'̀-‘́)ง what the fuck did u just say to me bitch. varric kind of… has to smooth things over massively there? but things do improve a bit w the whole karl thing, bcos, whether she’d admit it or not, delly’s massively nurturing and feels super bad for him, and also makes her opinion on templars and circles pretty fucking clear, so while they don’t become close until after bethany’s gone to the circle, they’re a little more civil with each other

4. how would they describe one another?

oh my god so sappily; they kind of worship each other???? to dell, he’s been incredible for years, just bcos of the whole, u know, ‘actual embodiment of justice in thedas, healing the poor for free in darktown, fighting for mage rights when no one else will’ thing, and she had a big inferiority complex there for a while. there’d be none of that ‘hes not evil or good’ bullshit from dai; she loves him and agrees w everything he believes in, and the only reason she doesn’t gush about him to everyone she meets is that they’re on the run and she can’t.

on his side, he’d probably start joking abt how she’s built like a brick shithouse, just bcos the muscles rly do it for him, but i mean. he will also talk abt how she’s so soft underneath all the shit she fronts and how he rly does think that shes a good person (which is rly kinda debatable, honestly, but he thinks she is) and how she’s so fierce and protective and absolutely worthy of the weight her name has. he rly rly loves how passionate she is abt the cause, but also just. her passion abt her loved ones rly makes him 🥺

7. who made the first move?

anders for sure, bcos delly is rly just... so soft and unsure and generally clueless abt romance, always. she’s had lovers before, but she’s never initiated. they take so long to even reach that point, anyway; there’s a running pool among everyone else to see who’s going to nut up and when. but i don’t think it happens like in the game; i think it’s a lot softer, at first, kinda like... he’s at the mansion, probably they’re going over his manifesto together, and she makes a rly good point or says something about mages and the monstrous nature of circles, and he’s kinda just... overwhelmed? by the fact that like? he rly does love this woman, so much, and wow how did he not realise this????

and like yea he kisses her kind of unthinkingly before he can agonise over it like anders usually does, and that’s that, u kno? they’re so soft oh my god

9.what was their worst fight about? who apologised first & how?

oh definitely the arishok fight, purely bcos it happened basically right after leandra died and it was pretty obvious to those who knew her that, going into it, delly wasn’t planning on coming out. she’s so injured in the aftermath that he insists on being there to look after her but like…… there’s a lot of frosty silences and quiet anger on his part, bcos hes like ‘i cant bring this up while shes literally bed-bound’, and it stays that way until he eventually blows up. 

after that things are frosty for a while, just bcos delly is super pissed that shes not dead and doesn’t rly care what he thinks of that, but she does eventually kind of... admit that it was a fucked up thing to do, and that it hurt those around her, and then he apologises for blowing up at all but makes it clear to her that That Is Not Okay, and it’s kinda a tender point between them for a little while after that

oh delly to both. she’s overprotective of everyone important in her life; if anything went wrong for little posy, delly’s immediately the one trying to resolve it w a lot of passion and anger. u dont want to bully posy hawke

i think they both do the typical baby-talk??? anders calls posy ‘little lady’ quite a bit, and he plays off the fact that she’s technically the heir to house amell all the time. delly calls her ‘sweetling’ tho

6. do they buy the child every toy it desires? or do they not spoil their child?

anders spoils posy. delly...... says she doesn’t. she’s a big liar, tho; she doesn’t spoil her to the same extent that anders does, but she does spoil her. she brings her lots of dolls and stuff

god cedany would be an awful mom, so definitely alistair. he’d do all the voices, too. probably tickle them while he does it. cedany might sit in and listen, maybe fuck around w him a bit, tease the kid, but that’d be it

if cedany could be bothered to, it’s her. i think she’d enjoy having someone to dress up a bit. they’d all be very fashionable pretty outfits, no matter the gender; truly i think ced’d treat the kid like a doll or a playmate more than her own child lmao

alistair would do everything for the kid, probably, but he would also try to encourage independence. cedany would encourage independence just bcos she would be so useless; she wouldn’t know how to look after the kid herself

dorian tries not to do baby talk, bcos he thinks he’s too dignified for that, but he falls into the trap all the time. in the beginning, bull and ath used to tease him abt it; usually now they’ll sorta just share a look and smile and roll their eyes when he’s babying the kid

ath would call them da’vhenan all the time. he speaks a lot of elven around that kid; he wants to share his culture !!!!!!! truly this kid would have the weirdest culture growing up, and would also speak so many languages, bcos probably once bull and ath start teaching them their respective languages, dorian’s like well now I WANT TO TEACH HIM OLD TEVENE

probably they would start saying ‘da’ and all three of their parents would be :0000 but then it turns out they’re trying to repeat ‘da’vhenan’, it’s just too big a word for a lil baby. ath is still smug abt it tho

dorian & bull are both immune. ath is not; the baby has ath wrapped around its little finger, bcos it’s ath. dorian and bull are trying to teach him to have more of a backbone tho, bcos really amatus, getting outplayed by a two year old is just embarrassing

8. who is more likely to make ice cream for breakfast?

ath, probably. i subscribe to that theory that the dalish have ice cream, so he’d know how to make it. also ath doesn’t rly know how to cook anything practical; he has his head in the clouds. dorian doesnt cook, he gets his servants to; i’m not sure that bull would let the kid have something so unhealthy for breakfast ?????????
