Kigali 1 Ch D R1: Pruchya Isaro/Christopher Rungkat def. Aziz Ouakaa/Kelsey Stevenson [1] 6-4, 6-4 Match Recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pruchya Isaro/Christopher Rungkat's point to 3-3* 0-15 (left) and to take the first set 6-4 (right) (📸 ATP official website)
Meanwhile, in Kigali 1...
The action started with a doubles match between first seeds, Aziz Ouakaa/Kelsey Stevenson, and Pruchya Isaro/Christopher Rungkat, the latter who won the doubles sector in last week (Feb 21)'s iteration of the M15 Nakhon Si Thammarat. Knowing both pairs, this could be a tricky affair for the latter pair, who might have appeared in-form and more clinical in some crucial points.
It took six consecutive holds before P. Isaro/Rungkat came up with a successful smash to set themselves one point ahead, all the way before they broke to 4-3. However, they had to face an initial break point due to an unforced error, which was saved through an unreturned serve from P. Isaro. Somehow, a serve from P. Isaro was thought to be a let from A. Ouakaa/K. Stevenson, which prompted the supervisor to be called.
Eventually, the said chaos was resolved, and somehow P. Isaro/C. Rungkat ended up holding the said game to 5-3. A. Ouakaa/K. Stevenson then held their serves afterward, and there came the opportunity for P. Isaro/C. Rungkat to serve for the first set, which they snatched to 6-4 to set themselves a set ahead in this match.

Pruchya Isaro/Christopher Rungkat's point to 2-1* 15-30 (top left), to break 3-1 (top right), and to take the second set 6-4 (📸 🎥 ATP official website)
It took three consecutive holds before P. Isaro/Rungkat started to put more pressure on A. Ouakaa/K. Stevenson. After coming up with a smash to secure their one-point lead, they then had a break point, which was converted thanks to C. Rungkat's timely volley to 3-1. Since then, P. Isaro/Rungkat held their serves, and had not looked back since.
It took moments until A. Ouakaa/K. Stevenson held their serves to 5-4 for the unseeded pair to serve for the match. Without any further hesitation, they took the second set 6-4 over an unreturned serve, thus securing them a quarterfinal spot, where they will get the winner between wild card the Lock brothers (Benjamin/Courtney John) and Ivan Denisov/Leonid Sheyngezikht, whose match is still ongoing as this was written.

De Algemene Verwarring #87 - 21 februari 2023
The eighty-seventh episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Tuesday February 21, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-87-21-februari-2023/
Pictured below are The Flying Lizards. I recently played their cover version of Summertime Blues, and recently also bought the maybe better known 7″ with their take on Money (That’s What I Want). So I’m playing that one now. More importantly, I want to thank all those wonderful people that showed up at last Friday’s party at The Pit’s, the bands Ignatz & De Stervende Honden and Christophe Clébard, the crew from the Pit’s for their help and for offering me their place to do this, and all the bands that I have played before in earlier episodes of this show. I think that most of the records I played Friday night have been featured in earlier episodes of De Algemene Verwarring, and if not, then they certainly will be featured sooner or later. I also hope all of you keep listening to the show and giving me feedback about it. Episode 88 is coming up on March 5, yes that’s a Sunday because I’m not available next Monday. See you then! And below the photo you will find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

TSMC ch. 2
Hi everyone, chapter two of The Sibling Matchmakers Club is up!
If you need a reminder of what it’s about:  James, Lucie, and Mina meet at a summer camp and discover they're siblings. They each live in a different place with a different parent, but they don't want to stay separated any longer and become determined to get their parents back together. Soon enough Kit, Mina's adopted brother, gets in on it, but there's a major complication: Zara Dearborn with an engagement ring. (A Parent Trap AU for Herongraystairs!)
You can read it here on AO3 :)  You can also read chapter 1 here on tumblr or here on AO3. Thank you for reading, please leave a comment or reblog and let me know what you think!
Chapter 2: A Declaration of War
Camp Clover was a bit too rowdy for James’s liking.
The cabins were all painted with bright colors, the grass greener than James had ever seen, and the sky much clearer than the sky in New York City. None of that was particularly bad, but the noise? As James set foot onto Camp Clover for the first time, he desperately wished that he had somehow missed his flight to Kansas. There were so many activities that were going on at once, and all of them were so loud and distracting that James already felt a headache coming on. He longed to read a book in silence, but his mom had only allowed him to pack three and he planned to make them last.
His peppy cabin leader was leading him towards his new cabin, and James knew he should feel excited, but he was already exhausted just from the drive there. His mom had arranged a family friend to pick him up from the airport and drive him to the camp, and Magnus Bane had been a bit too social. Magnus had only been visiting the area with his family himself, and was the sole reason Tessa had allowed James to go to a summer camp that was out-of-state. Normally James would appreciate the effort, especially since he’d met Magnus before and knew he was a kind man, but he had been feeling too much dread to really talk much. James hoped that he hadn’t come across as rude.
There was also something unusual in the way Magnus Bane had talked with him --like there was something about to happen, and he was excited for it. He had talked about driving two other kids to the camp too, so apparently he was family friends with more than just Tessa. Magnus had also been strangely confident that James would meet new, interesting people. James wouldn’t object to making new friends, especially in a place like this where he didn’t know anybody, but it wasn’t as easy as both his mom and Magnus seemed to believe.
“Here we are,” his over-enthusiastic camp counselor said, walking James over to a cabin painted bright orange. “This is where you’ll be staying!”
The cabin had been split in half into two rooms with connecting doors, both rooms having two sets of bunk beds. His counselor led him onto the left side, where two boys were already unpacking their things.
The boy with neat brown hair looked up, and he smiled shyly at James. James hesitantly smiled back. The boy next to him, with his wild, curly brown hair, was on top of the bottom bunk on the right and trying to put the sheets on his bed.
“Meet your roommates!” the counselor said, and James wondered if he was always this cheerful. “James, this is Thomas and Christopher Lightwood. Boys, this is James Gray.”
Thomas, the boy that had smiled at him, held up a hand in a sort of half-wave. Christopher, the boy who had been trying to put his sheets on, looked up in surprise.
“Roommates?” Christopher asked, and the sheets slipped out of his hands. They scrunched up, undoing themselves, and immediately started to fall onto the floor.
Thomas looked at the sheets and sighed. “That was his third try.”
“Yes, roommates.” Their counselor was still smiling. “Normally there would be four people to a room, but your fourth roommate cancelled last minute so it looks like it’s just the three of you.” He stopped and checked his wristwatch. “Well, I have other campers to show around, so I’ll be off. Make sure to be at the dining hall by 12 for lunch!” With that he walked out, and James was alone with Thomas and Christopher.
Christopher was still looking at James, and James noticed that Christopher’s glasses were a little too big for his face. They kept slipping down, but the boy didn’t even seem to notice. “Roommates?” Christopher asked again, before looking at Thomas. “We have roommates?”
Thomas pointed to the empty bunk bed on the left side of the room, and James took that chance to walk over there and set his things down on the bottom bunk. “What did you think the other bunk bed was for? There’s too many people at this camp for it to be just us here.”
Christopher looked at the other bunk bed like it had appeared out of thin air. “Oh, there’s another bed. How long has that been there?”
Thomas looked pained, and James decided changing the conversation would probably be best. “Are you two brothers?” he asked, genuinely curious.
Thomas laughed, smiling a little. “No, we’re cousins. But our parents were close, so we were kind of raised like brothers.”
“That sounds nice,” James said, his mind wandering to his own family. “I don’t have any siblings, or any cousins. I don’t have any family at all, besides my mom.” He paused. It sounded depressing, now that he was saying it out loud, and he didn’t want that as their first impression of him. “Though my mom is the best.”
That got them into a conversation about their family and what they were like, and James was actually enjoying himself. He learned about how Thomas had two older sisters, but Christopher’s cool older sister Anna was almost like a sister to him too. How Christopher loved science and experiments, but could get lost in his own head sometimes and Anna had always looked after him. James found himself sharing things too. He talked about his mom, and how she raised him by herself but never complained.
By the time noon rolled around and they had to leave, James was feeling a bit optimistic. He had thought that camp would be horrible and that no one would like him, but Thomas and Christopher were both nice and they all got along well. It was possible that James had overreacted, and that Camp Clover wasn’t going to be a place that would make James miserable.
Though of course, it was only noon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lucie had been admittedly a little nervous about meeting her new roommates, but it had gone well. The two girls on the bunk bed on the right weren’t really that friendly, and didn’t seem like they wanted to talk. Grace hadn’t even introduced herself, she had just given them a judging look and went back to putting her things away. Paige had outright glared at Lucie’s energetic introduction, and Lucie had immediately resolved to avoid her. But Mina? Mina had been a delight.
Mina had introduced herself as Mina Carstairs, then brought up her hand to offer a handshake. There was something about it that made Lucie like her immediately, and she had shaken Mina’s hand with vigor. She didn’t know if shaking hands was a normal thing that kids did where Mina was from, but Lucie had been intrigued by the strange gesture. Mina and Lucie had hit it off instantly, even if Mina was a year younger than her.
“What do you think will be for lunch?” Mina asked as they walked to the dining hall, side by side. Her black hair was in two pigtails, and they swayed a little as Mina walked. Lucie had her hair up in a bun.
“I have no idea,” Lucie admitted as the main door came into view, and she wondered how many people would be in there. “As long as it’s not as bad as the cafeteria food at my school, I’ll be happy.”
Mina laughed, and she and Lucie walked into the building. It was full of other campers, most already sitting down and eating. Mina and Lucie had gotten distracted as well as lost, so there were no empty tables left by the time they got inside and got their food. Luckily, it was pizza.
“Over there,” Mina said, pointing to a table where three boys who looked their age sat. “We could sit there.”
Lucie shrugged and nodded, walking over to the table. The other tables with free seats were tables that older kids or younger kids were sitting at, and Lucie wanted to make friends with people her own age.
“Hi,” Lucie said as she approached, and all three of the boys’ heads turned to face her. “Do you mind if we sit here?”
“Sure,” the one with black hair said after a moment, and Lucie and Mina sat down across from them. They introduced themselves to each other, and Lucie did a double take.
Was it just her or did James look familiar? The first thing she noticed was that his eyes were a steely gray-brown, but in the light they looked almost golden. Lucie had never met anyone with that color eyes before, so she thought it was pretty cool. His hair, though, Lucie thought, is just like Papa’s hair. That must be it, why he seemed so familiar --he and her father had the same hair type. Though oddly enough, there had been something about Mina that made Lucie feel like she had met her before, too...
“Have I met you before?” James suddenly asked, and Lucie’s eyes widened. James had said it quietly, as if thinking to himself, but Lucie had heard it as clear as day.
“You too?” Lucie breathed, leaning excitedly into the table. “I could have sworn I’ve met you before!”
Mina’s gaze went from James to Lucie, then back to James again. “Maybe you met each other once, a long time ago?” she suggested.
James nodded slowly. “That must be it.”
Lucie looked to Thomas and Christopher, who had been watching the exchange in confusion. She didn’t want to make them feel excluded. “What about you two? You kind of look like brothers.”
“We’re cousins,” Christopher explained earnestly, dumping an obscene amount of garlic on his pizza.
“People make that mistake a lot,” Thomas said, taking the garlic from Christopher and setting it down on the table.
“I feel like you two could pass for twins, if you really wanted to.” Mina said, though Lucie had noticed that Thomas and Christopher had two very obviously different colored eyes.
Lucie sighed wistfully. “I want a twin. Imagine how cool that would be? We could totally swap places in school and prank everyone.”
“You could have a boy twin instead,” James pointed out. “Then you wouldn’t be able to do that because you wouldn’t look the same.”
Lucie thought it over. “I guess so, but I still think having a twin would be cool. You would never be lonely.”
“James and Christopher are lucky,” James said, looking over to the two boys. “You guys both have siblings. I’m an only child.”
“Me too,” Lucie said, and couldn’t help but agree that James and Christopher were fortunate. She turned to Mina, who had been eating and watching them quietly. “What about you, do you have any siblings?”
Mina’s face lit up. “Yes! I have an older brother, Kit. He’s sixteen, and he’s fun to have around most of the time.” She paused. “Though we don’t look anything alike. He was adopted, and he has blond hair and blue eyes.”
They continued conversing about siblings and family, then eventually moved onto pets and which ones they preferred. James liked dogs better, Mina liked cats better, and Lucie liked them both. The Lightwoods had said they liked both, though Thomas seemed like he would be more of a dog person.
Then the topic moved to Lucie’s British accent, and why she had decided to go to Camp Clover in America. A family friend of Lucie’s was currently residing in the area, and if it wasn’t for him Lucie’s papa would never have let her travel so far away. Oddly enough, Mina had a family friend drive her to camp as well.
Everything had been going well, until Lucie ruined it.
“You know,” she had started, finally finished with her pizza. “I’m so happy they had pizza for lunch. I was imagining something really bad, like school food.”
“I know,” Thomas agreed. “Even if it is plain. My parents usually get it with pepperoni.”
“I like it best with pineapple,” Lucie said. “That’s usually what my papa and I get.”
Everyone else at the table stopped in their tracks. “Pineapple...?” Christopher said slowly, looking up from where he was fiddling with the parmesan cheese. “Why?”
Thomas and James shared baffled glances. “Pineapple?” James asked, his voice tinged with disgust.
Lucie raised her eyebrows. “Yes, pineapple. Haven’t you ever had it before?”
“We’re not criminals,” Thomas said, then quickly shut his mouth as if he’d regretted saying it immediately.
“Hey,” Mina jumped in. “I like pineapple pizza too, though my dad doesn’t. It’s really not that bad.”
“Not that bad?” James looked at both Lucie and Mina as if he’d never seen them before. “Not that bad?”
“Listen, it tastes good-”
“Pineapple does not belong on pizza!”
“Have you ever even tried it?”
“I don’t need to try it to know that a fruit doesn’t belong on pizza.”
“Well a tomato is a fruit, and-”
Lucie couldn’t understand where she had gone wrong. Didn’t everybody like pineapple on pizza? Lucie had thought it was a safe thing to talk about, but she and James were on the verge of getting into an actual fight at this point.
“Ok,” James finally said, standing up. Lunchtime was ending, and a lot of campers had already left the dining hall. “I’m going to leave, and then maybe while we’re gone you two will get a better sense of taste.”
“Hey!” Mina looked as offended as Lucie felt. “I have good taste.”
James gave her a look. “We’ll see.” he said, and with that he and the Lightwoods gathered up their things and left.
Lucie sat there in shock for a full minute, then turned to Mina. “We’re not the crazy ones, right?”
“Pineapple on pizza is good,” Mina said simply. “They just think that they’re right, even though they’re wrong.”
Lucie sighed. She still had Mina, but so much for making a lot of friends.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mina wasn’t really the type to be mean, but Lucie had looked sad the entire walk back to their cabin, and Mina wasn’t going to let it slide. Mina had been overjoyed when she met Lucie --there was just something about her energy that Mina had connected with, and for some reason she had seemed familiar. Lucie had been down since the pineapple pizza debate, and it was making Mina worried. Mina had thought they were all just joking and not actually fighting, but maybe Lucie was really passionate about pizza?
Either way, Mina had an idea on how to cheer Lucie up.
“Do you think we should get back at them?” Mina asked, once they were both alone in their cabin room. Grace and Paige were out playing a game with some of the others, so they didn’t have to worry about being overheard.
“What do you mean?” Lucie sat down on the bottom bunk next to Mina. When they had first met, Lucie had really wanted the top bunk. Mina had been perfectly fine with it, especially since Lucie was really happy when Mina had agreed.
“My brother will sometimes prank people for fun,” Mina told her. “We could prank the boys, to get back at them. Kit’s been telling me about some simple ones.”
Lucie’s eyes widened. “Pranks?” she asked excitedly. “Oh, I’ve always wanted to prank someone!”
Mina nodded enthusiastically. “Right?! It’ll be fun, and we’ll make sure it won’t actually hurt them.”
Lucie was very into the idea, and Mina couldn’t be happier. She had explained her idea, and once it got dark out they had snuck out of the cabin.
Mina approached an orange cabin. “This is theirs, right? The orange one on the left side?” she whispered to Lucie. There had been counselors walking around to make sure none of the campers were up and about, but Mina and Lucie were able to avoid them easily.
“I think so,” Lucie whispered back. “The room on the left.”
The two girls slowly crept up to the cabin, and carefully opened the door. Mina breathed a sigh of relief that the door didn’t creak. They made their way to the left side, and were happy to see that the boys all seemed to be asleep.
Mina turned to Lucie. “Ready?” she mouthed. Lucie nodded.
Together they took their cans of shaving cream and each went to a bunk bed. Lucie had called dibs on James, while Mina had taken the Lightwoods. Mina sprayed shaving cream all over Thomas’s chest and hands, making sure to put some on his legs and feet for good measure. She climbed up a bit to reach Christopher and nearly slipped, but luckily neither of them woke up.
She chanced a glance to Lucie, and was glad to see that James wasn’t waking up either. She and Lucie took their time, grinning to each other as they finished the job. The two of them crept out of the cabin as carefully as they had crept in, and the second they were outside the girls made a run for it.
Mina got back to their cabin first, feeling high on adrenaline. She had officially done her first prank! She couldn’t wait to tell Kit when she talked to him next.
“We did it!” Lucie whisper-yelled as they got settled in bed, trying to be quiet so they wouldn’t wake up Grace and Paige. “I can’t believe we actually did it!”
Mina couldn’t stop smiling, happy that they hadn’t gotten caught. “I bet they’ll be impressed.” she voiced. She was thankful that she was able to cheer Lucie up, which had been the main goal, but she was also kind of proud of herself for coming up with the plan in the first place.
“Do you think they’ll be mad?” Lucie asked from the top bunk.
“No, I don’t think so. I bet they’ll think it’s funny.” Mina said.
Lucie laughed quietly. “I hope so,” she said, and her voice softened. “I was hoping that we could all be friends.”
Mina paused before answering. “I don’t think they were mad, Lucie. I think James was just joking around. They won’t be mad.”
“They might prank us back,” Lucie pointed out.
Mina snorted. “No way! They don’t have the guts.”
The next day, Mina noticed James and Thomas at the arts and crafts area. The two boys seemed to be watching Christopher put something together, but she decided to get Lucie first before going over to say hi to them.
“Lucie,” Mina yelled, running to the kickball area where Lucie was waiting in line to play. “I found James, Thomas, and Christopher. Do you want to go talk to them?”
Lucie grinned, bouncing on the tips of her feet. “Of course I do!” she said, leaving her place in line to follow Mina back to the arts and crafts area.
James saw them come in this time. “Hi,” he said as he approached them. There was something about it that seemed odd, but Mina couldn’t put a name to it. Maybe it was the tone of his voice, or the awkward way he was standing? “We wanted to apologize for yesterday.”
Mina blinked, and glanced at Lucie who was doing the same. “Apologize?” Lucie asked hesitantly.
James smiled, and motioned Thomas and Christopher forward. Thomas was making an effort to not look either of them in eye, while Christopher held a basket then handed it to James.
James offered the basket over to them. “For you,” he said, still smiling. Out of everything, Mina found the constant smiling the most suspicious. The basket clearly had something in it, but it was hard to tell what it was with the cloth that was draped over the top.
Lucie reached over to grab it, seemingly delighted with the gift. “Oh, thank you!” she said happily.
James and the Lightwoods took a step back. Mina’s eyes widened in realization. “Hey Lucie, wait-”
Lucie took the cloth off, and it all exploded in a ball of white. Flour stuck all over Mina’s clothes, as well as covered her hair. Lucie didn’t look any better. Her face was covered with as much flour as her clothes, her expression horrified. The boys had stepped far enough to be just out of range, and James looked like he was holding in a laugh.
“You,” Mina said, pointing a finger directly at him. “You all did this on purpose-”
“Oh, like how you two visited our cabin last night?” James asked innocently.
Lucie was frozen in shock, her hand still gripping the basket that had held the flour bomb.
“We’ll get you for this!” Mina fumed, patting some of the flour off of her hair.
“Do it.” James challenged confidently. Mina couldn’t believe that she had thought James was shy. “I dare you.”
Mina gasped. They couldn’t back down from a dare.
“Fine,” Lucie’s voice rang out, and Mina turned to look at her in surprise. Lucie threw the basket to the ground next to Thomas and glared at James. “If it’s war you want, it’s war you’ll get. Come on, Mina!”
Lucie turned on her heel and stormed out, Mina following closely behind her and ignoring the strange looks at their flour-covered appearance. “I guess they did have the guts.” Lucie said bitterly, and Mina was regretting ever bringing up the prank idea. When Kit did them it was mostly good fun, but now Lucie was angry. “We’ll get them good.”
“Right,” Mina agreed, because even if they seemed to be actually fighting the boys now, she was never one to back down from a prank.
She couldn’t help but have the feeling that she had no idea what she was getting into.

Tell Me A Lie (NH) Ch 6
Word count: 1997
Warnings: swearing, minor assault
The following day was spent mostly indoors. Niall had more writing to do and it gave me the opportunity to finish editing. That was until Niall insisted we go out to take photos. He took us to all the popular spots, including the angel wings, and honestly it was fun. Very cliche, but fun.
He had a few people recognize him and ask for a photo. That was a bit bizarre. He was so nonchalant about it though.
After we got back, I went upstairs to lay down. I definitely needed time to recoup before going out again; especially if the crowds were going to be large. Clubs in Iowa aren’t necessarily wild, they could be but not in the way I assumed LA was. And the college I went to, Wartburg, was in the small town of Waverly which only had a couple bars and only one allowed under the drinking age kids. I didn’t really party until my final year when I’d realized I hadn’t experienced that part of college and it led to some terrible relationships.
Granted, I knew that life wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies; Wartburg wasn’t my first choice. It induced a lot of my anxiety nowadays, despite having it before it all went down. I could be negative about it, but it made me stronger in a way.
I rolled over onto my back and pinched the bridge of my nose. The frontal headache was slowly showing itself. I found my pill pocket and dragged my feet to the bathroom to use water from the sink. Then I rifled through my clothes to find my black elastic harness, white boxy tee, dusty blue satin skirt, ripped sheer tights, and black oxfords. I switched out the outfits before I somewhat settled on a focus on redoing my hair and makeup; I left it down, straightened it quickly and created a couple small braid strands, and did a darker ombre on my lids with winged liner.
“Holy… shite,” Niall breathed as he waltzed into the room wearing a blue suede trouser and jacket set with a white crew and brown boots.
I took a step back from the body mirror and turned around to observe what he was wearing. “How did we manage to match but not match at the same time?”
“It’s the blues for sure,” he replied.
“Right.” I turned back around to assess myself once more, deciding whether or not I needed any last touches. Niall came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my torso. His head rested on my shoulder.
“You look great, Kelly.”
“Would it be cheesy to get a mirror couple selfie? The fans would eat that up.”
His laugh vibrated against my back. “Use my phone.”
Niall held his phone out, keeping one arm around my torso. I stuck with a normal smile, that was before he surprised me with a kiss on the cheek. My expression scrunched up as my body curled inward. I couldn’t stop the giggles at the ideas that crossed my mind.
“Hold on, crouch down by my legs. I’m gonna take a fit pic and pretend I don’t see you.”
He had a hard time keeping a straight face, but we managed to get a couple good shots. “I know what I’m posting.”
Niall smiled as he flipped through his. “Me too.”
A minute later, there were Twitter and Instagram notifications from him. I opened it up to see he had attached a normal picture of me smiling and then one of me scrunching up my face as he kissed my cheek. The caption was ‘A night out dancing with this beautiful woman . Don’t get many of these lately . Love you babe <3”.
There goes the flutter in my chest again. Fuck. I mentally cleared my throat and moved my slightly shaky finger to like each post, then replied with “Love you too Nialler <3 <3”. As we slipped out into the night, I created my own posts. I chose one where Niall was looking right up at me and captioned it “Tonight’s fit feat. Niall. You’re my number one admirer. I love you always <3”.
I threw my phone into the temporary black, mini crossbody; I’d also thrown my wallet in it. If I’d worn jeans, I would’ve just put them in my pockets. My sight traveled to the blurred lights outside the window of our Uber’s car. There was definitely a vibe here; I could see why people loved to live here.
“What’s the first place we’re going to?”
“It’s a standard nightclub. Nothing over the top.”
I nodded. “Alright.”
My jaw dropped when we finally got inside. If this was standard, then I don’t want to know what the bouche nightclubs were like. The dance floor was enormous, dancers had their own little stages sporadically around it. I had to force myself to not stare at the beautiful women covered in glitter. I noted the bills in their straps. Maybe I’ll leave a tip for one of them at some point. Niall pulled us through the crowd of people and we stopped in front of the bar.
“What do you want?”
“Sprite and apple pucker.”
He nodded and faced the bartender again. I tried to not let the loud music overwhelm my mind. Niall lightly touched my arm and I looked back at him, in a small daze from observing the place, and everything and everyone in it. I sort of felt out of place; like I wasn’t really there. The feeling was too familiar, and I didn’t like it.
He set a clear square glass in my hand. I gave him a small smile and took a sip of it. The bubble popped on the top of my throat while the alcohol burned down. Niall had a Guinness in hand and took a swig of it.
I took a few more sips of the jolly rancher drink, observing once again, and I kept close to Niall. His presence, and sweet drink, made me feel somewhat better.
We found a nearby table to chill at for a bit. Let the alcohol soak in. I’d eventually gone to get refills for us. My eyes landed on one of the blonde dancers and she looked directly back at me. She smiled, turned to me, and reached a hand out.
“Dance with me!” she yelled.
I looked at her slightly dazed.
“Go on,” Niall encouraged.
I tried to not cough on my own spit. “Y-you’ll be fine for a few?”
“Of course. Go!”
I handed him my clutch, then let the dancer guide me up onto the platform floor. I swayed back and forth slowly, letting myself get lost. I recognized the next song, Tumblr Girls by G-Eazy feat. Christoph Anderson, and got giddy. I allowed myself to sync deeper with the music. My hips swayed more, and I brought my arms above my head.
The dancer closed in even more, resting hands on my hips, and grinded on one of my legs.
“You’ve got some moves! What’s your name?”
I flushed. “Lauren, and you too. You?”
“I’m Flora! Is that your boyfriend?”
“N-” I cleared my throat and nodded. “Yeah!”
She laughed. “Well, he seems to be enjoying this.”
Heat ran deeper in my cheeks and I glanced over my shoulder to see Niall watching. He had his elbow resting on the table, hand under his chin. His beer bottle hovered over his privates.
I bit my lip, laughing under my breath. “I gotta admit, I’m having fun too.”
After a couple more songs, I decided it was time to get off the stage. No one else seemed to be getting invited by the dancers to join them up there, so it was awkward now. I grabbed a ten out of my wallet and handed it to her.
“You are absolutely stunning Flora. Thanks for the fun!”
Flora kissed my cheek, then winked. “You too, babe.”
“That didn’t break any rules, right?” I took deep breaths to calm my high. I wanted to keep dancing for sure. Just not on show for everyone else.
He shrugged. “I won’t tell. Come on, I want a turn.” He reached his hand out and I smirked.
The music pace changed to something by ILLENIUM. I started to bounce with the rest of the crowd and did dumb arm movements. Niall busted a laugh, following my pattern. A few songs later, I had the urge to pee. It was immense.
I gestured towards where I remember seeing a restroom sign. “Gotta use the girls’ room. Be right back.”
I hurried into one of the stalls and relieved myself. I washed my hands and looked into the mirror, just as a girl who looked to be about a year or two older than me came out of a stall.
She looked at me deviously. “You look familiar.”
“Don’t we all in these places?” I laughed, slightly nervous.
“Yes, but no, you look familiar for a different reason.”
“I’m sure I do.” I busied myself with drying my hands. Then I exited without saying another word.
On my way back, a stranger touched my butt then pulled me into their chest to grind. “Shake that ass for me.
Without really thinking, I batted the hand away and turned around to throw a smack. “Fuck off!”
The guy glared. “What the hell, bitch?”
“You touched my body without consent! You’re the bitch!”
“Whatever,” he scoffed. “Your loss, baby! I got a date to get back to anyway!”
I didn’t bother giving a proper response. By the look on his face, I knew I wasn’t the only one who would give him shit for violating boundaries.
“What was the crack with that fella?” Niall asked, gesturing in the direction I came from.
“Nothing.” I shrugged.
He shot me a look. “You look pretty flustered, Kelly. Everything alright?”
“Yeah, can we just go home though? I-I’m tired.”
“Of course, yeah.”
Niall’s hand found mine. On our way out, the same guy glanced in our direction as he grinded with a different girl. A smirk spread on his lips, his hands tightening on her hips. There was a phantom feeling and I swallowed. I subtly ran my free shaky hand over the back of my skirt and looked away.
The night air was much cooler now compared to the inside of that club. We paused momentarily so Niall could call for another Uber. Niall wrapped his arms around me, resting his head on top of mine. A few minutes later, a Rover pulled up to the side and Niall approached to confirm it was for us. Then we both got in.
Niall’s hand didn’t let go of mine until we were back in the house. I couldn’t lie, I was grateful for it. I let go though.
“Wanna watch a movie?” he asked.
I nodded. “I’m gonna get pjs on first.”
I couldn’t look at him before I left to go upstairs. I went for my oversized tee and floral shorts, and paused momentarily in the middle of the room. Finally, my feet moved toward the living room.
Niall was propped on the couch with a blanket and when he saw me, he opened it up for me to snuggle into. He enveloped me in his arms before he hit play on the movie he chose. My brain wasn’t registering much of it. I focused on the warmth of Niall. The sturdiness of his body. He was a firm base.
“That guy touched my butt and grinded on me without consent. I don’t really want to talk about it, but I also don’t want to brush it off.”
He tightened his arms around me, snuggling his face closer to mine. “I’m sorry that guys are so shite. You didn’t deserve that.”
I subtly shrugged, then whispered, “At least I’ve got you.”
I could hear him smile. “Always, Kelly.”
We both fell silent again and returned to the movie.

Morning writing output…. Finally making some headway on the writer’s block before the week starts.
From: Family, Familia, ‘Ohana Ch 5 Eddie POV
Fandoms: H50/911
Pairings: Buddie, McDanno
Warnings: first draft, Eddie needs to get his head on straight.
Getting Christopher off to school had been a process.
His son had been clingy—the way he kept watching Eddie was a reminder that Christopher had lost his mom and was afraid of losing his sole remaining parent. Eddie had scared his son and he’d had to be extra persuasive to get long enough to shower with Chris sitting on the toilet in his pajamas, needing the reassurance of him keeping up a stream of small talk and refusing to be more than five feet away.
He’d fucked up—big time. How could he have done this to Chris?  How could he have been so stupid, so reckless? He was failing again and again. A disappointment. He never stopped failing his son.
He tried his best to ignore the repetitive mantra in the back of his mind that kept reminding him just how much of a screw up he was. Eddie couldn’t silence it—how do you stop yourself from knowing how much you’d failed?  He was raised to take accountability for his actions and… he would have to.
There was a message from a number he didn’t recognize when he’d woken up with Chris snuggled into him on the couch.  Gingerly reaching across Chris’ sleeping form, he’d pulled it up, tilting the screen away so it wouldn’t wake his son.  It was from Deacon Kay telling him that he’d be picking up Eddie around nine to take him to his first therapy appointment.
This was followed by a short message from Bobby that had the contact information for a therapist without any further details.
Eddie assumed this was the therapist that Kay was taking him to see.
There was a brief flare of irritation at their managing of him but he suppressed it immediately.  This was about taking accountability for his actions.  He couldn’t screw this up.
Getting ready for the day had been slower than normal, Eddie moving like a man three times his age.  Everything hurt and was stiff from sleeping on the couch instead of in bed.
The shower with Chris hovering made him feel a bit more human instead of a collection of aches and pains. He’d hardly been able to eat any of his bowl of cereal as just lifting the milk jug had informed him that he’d done something to his elbow last night that he’d somehow missed. He’d pulled on a long sleeved shirt to hide the blossoming bruises but he couldn’t really hide the ones on the side of his face that were beginning to turn purple as they blossomed fully.
Christopher had seen the bruises and he’d looked scared before Eddie could hide them underneath his shirt.
They hadn’t talked about them.
Both of them had mostly just moved their cereal around in the bowl rather than eating any of it. Neither of them had an appetite this morning.
The drive to school was silent on Christopher’s side—responding to none of Eddie’s attempts to cheer him up. When he’d pulled up to the curb at the drop off point, Christopher had moved slower than molasses getting out so Eddie had moved to help him.
Which is how they ended up this way, hugging each other like they never wanted to let each other go ever again.
Christopher had tightly wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist in front of his school, face buried in Eddie’s stomach as he wrapped his own arms around his son, eyes dropped to the wild curls that were extra tight in the early morning heat.  Other students and their parents streamed past them on their way into the school but Chris was reluctant to let him go.  His ribs twinged in protest but Eddie ignored them, focusing on his son’s thin arms wrapped around him.
This was his why. This was his reason.  He’d do anything for Chris—even fix himself. Or at least keep trying.

Mortem In Contumeliam, Ch. XI
Chapter 11 of "Mortem In Contumeliam Final Fantasy VI," a Final Fantasy VI fan fiction story.
Now, here's a fun fact for you.  The person that interacts the most with Wedge, in this chapter?  That wasn't planned.  I mean, it's not to say that I had a plan for this section of the story beyond "that scene…" but, I think it ended up being pretty cute.
Word count: 4,108 – Character count: 23,417 Originally written: July 26th, 2019
Familiar strangers arrive in the wake of chaos.  Is Samasa saved?

“Hee-hee-hee, ha-haaah!!”     Kefka insanely laughed as the huge pile of crystals jingled and clinked in his arms.     “With all this beautiful Magicite, I should have no problem getting through that pesky seal!  Then… then…  The treasure will be mine… all mine…!!”     He gave another laugh… then, he hiccuped.     “Un-belieeeve-able!!”     And, with that strange thought… he walked right out of the town, leaving it to burn.
“Oh, gods– oh, gods– oh, gods– oh, gods– oh, gods…!  Be okay, please be okay!”
When he was sure that the power-mad man was truly out of sight, Wedge finally came out of his hiding spot… though, with serious difficulty.  He was completely drenched in sweat from the impromptu steam-bath, freezing-cold from fright, and still mildly panicked from what he’d seen and heard.  Despite all that, he knew he had a duty to fulfill… checking on his friends!  But, that would have to way because…     “Stop right there!!”     As he noticed when he spun around…     “It’s you guys!!”     He wasn’t alone.
Standing across the way from him was a rag-tag group of people that he recognized from the dinner at Vector: a royal figure and a strongman, both of which looked similar… a heavily-armored man with a stern gaze and sharp blade… a wild child, a well-dressed man, and even a  moogle, for some reason!  Yes, he recognized them all as friends of the Returners and, though he was extremely relieved to see them… it didn’t seem like they were too thrilled to see him.
“Thank gods you’re here…” he sighed with a smile.     When he took a step forward… he had to jerk back.  A handful of shafts had pierced the ground, landing right where his foot had been.  He looked at them, then looked up… only to slowly raise his hands over his head.  The man in green trappings had an odd device leveled at him… a device that looked like a crossbow with a number of additions, such as a belt full of bolts hanging off it.  It didn’t take much guessing to figure out what kind of weapon that was…
“O-okay, I know what this looks like, but–”     “You have exactly five seconds to explain what happened here,” the man shouted as his companions angrily glared and made various threatening gestures.  “The next volley won’t miss.”     Wedge wasn’t sure how to summarize everything, so he just blurted out the first thing he could: “K-Kefka!!”  Luckily… that seemed to be just the word to get the group to calm down.     “Explain,” the man ordered, keeping his weapon aimed at the soldier’s head.  And, under threat of becoming a pincushion… the soldier told the group everything that had happened.
Shortly after his explanation, Wedge was shoved aside and told to leave.  He walked some short distance away… but, he didn’t want to exit the village.  In fact, he wanted to help with the situation in any way he could!  So, as they tended to their unconscious friends, he walked over to the well, pulled up a water bucket, then hurled some hot water at the nearest building.  It wasn’t until his third toss that any of the Returners noticed what he was up to, and…     “Gau… help armor man?”     It was a child with wild hair and torn clothes, seemingly there to help.     “Not… sure what you can do.  There’s only one bucket, but–”     “Gau, Gau!!” he shouted before closing his eyes.  “Gaauuu… Blizzard!”
The soldier went wide-eyed as the scruffy youth stood up and cast a storm of snow at the building.  When he did it, again, Wedge wasn’t sure what to say…  Then, when a couple of others started doing the same to the nearby buildings, he just rubbed the back of his helmet, feeling kind of useless.  His little bucket was no match for the power of magic…
Once the fire had been quenched, he was among the first to search the ruined buildings for signs of life.  Thankfully, there were plenty of citizens who had kept themselves safe and out of harm’s way.  The rest of the morning was spent helping them recover, dousing what fire remained, and generally trying to undo the damage that “his people” had done to Samasa.
As the sun rose up and held itself high above the land, Wedge found himself leaning on the well and thinking… only to look to his side.     “Gau?”     Once again, the strange youth had come up to him.  He seemed to be offering a small portion of jerky to the soot-covered soldier.     “Thanks.”  He smiled as he took it.  “Ya know… you’re a lot nicer than your friends.”     “Gau…”  He looked away.  “Others not trust armor man.  Armor man hurt others.”     When Wedge tilted his head, Gau immediately corrected himself.     “Other armor man hurt friends!  Armor man bad.  But…”     The boy looked up with a bright smile.     “Yous armor man seem good!”     “W-well, I try…” he said as he ruffled the kid’s hair, much to his appreciation.     “Hey, you!”     Both he and the child looked across the way.  The burly man – who looked similar to the guy with the mechanical crossbow – was walking toward them.
“Thou!” the wild child greeted as the muscle-man drew closer.     “Yeah, yeah…” was the man’s chuckling response.  “You.  Soldier.”     Wedge hesitated… then, he looked right at the man with a neutral expression.     “I came over to say… thanks.”     “Huh?”  The soldier gave a blink.     “I saw you tryin’ to put out the fire with your dinky bucket.”  The other man laughed.  “Got Gau all fired-up!”     “Not Fire, Thou!  Blizzard!” Gau corrected.     “I didn’t mean– bah.”  He shook his head at the laughing kid.
“Anyway… I don’t know what your game is, red-suit, but…”     “Gau, Gau!!” the rambunctious youth suddenly shouted as he hopped up onto the well.  He made an odd, purring noise as Wedge ruffled his hair, shortly after.     “You got Gau’s trust, so I guess you can’t be all bad.”     “Thanks… I think?”     “If you really wanna help us… maybe, you can tell us anything else you know?  Like, how’d Kefka get outta jail?  Why’d he set the town on fire?  And, where’s–”     “General Leo!!”
A horrified shriek ripped across the town square.  Both men, as well as the child, recognized the voice and, immediately after hearing it, ran over to see what was going on.  What they saw when they arrived was… absolutely heartbreaking.  Tina and Lock had recovered from their unconscious states and, unfortunately… the latter had managed to find what little of General Christophe that Kefka had left behind.
“No… no… nooo…!!” she howled as she sat on her knees, visibly sobbing into her hands over the loss of her new friend.     “Tina…”     Wedge was about to crouch and comfort her… only for Lock to stop him.     “You stay away from her,” he said with a cold gaze and a threatening tone, pushing him away.  “You’ve done enough, already.”     “I didn’t–!!” he started to shout before catching himself.  With a controlled tone, he explained, “I didn’t do anything…!”     “Exactly.”  The man in the bandanna angrily scowled.  “You could have saved him… you could have saved Tina from seeing this.”     “What the hell would I have done?!” the soldier growled, growing angry.  “Between all the soldiers and his freaking death balls, Kefka would’ve ripped me apart!  As it was, he tossed me in the well before he got bored with me!”     “Maybe, you should’ve stayed down there,” the other man coldly told him.  A second later, he found himself staring, wide-eyed, as the soldier threw him against a nearby mound – not incidentally, causing both the machinist and the retainer to draw their weapons.
“Look, you sonovabitch!” Wedge snarled as he pinned Lock against the rocks.  “I’m not one of them!  Those were Kefka’s soldiers!  I serve… served… under General Leo!!”     He gave a blink as the Returner spun him around, shoving him against the hill.     “And, where were you when he was getting shanked?!” he yelled.  “Where were you when Kefka was burning the village?!”     “I was in the gods damned well!  Unconscious!!” the soldier told him.  “Leo was–”     “More like, hiding!”  Lock slammed him against the slanted ground.  “You could’ve saved him!  Coward!”     Wedge wanted to say something.  However, he noticed that as angry as Lock was…     “Some soldier you are…”     He seemed more frustrated with the situation than anything – something he could relate to.
The Returner sighed as he finally let Wedge go, then took a few steps away.  As he did that, the people who were aiming at the soldier stood down before returning to Tina’s side.  A moment later, it was Lock who knelt beside her, letting the girl cry into his shoulder.
“Armor man…?”     Wedge glared at Lock… then, he looked to his side.  Gau had scurried up the hill beside him and was staring with bright eyes full of concern.     “Armor man sad…?” he asked with a small frown.     The soldier hesitated… then, he sighed, “Armor man sad…”     “Armor man want meat?”     “Armor man…”  He paused, again.  “Wants to disappear…”     At that, Gau opened his eyes and gasped.  “Armor man like spooky black man?!”     “‘Spooky black…?’”     Wedge had to think about who that could be.  When he figured it out… he just laughed.     “No, kid…  I mean, I just want to leave.  Go home.  Get away from… this mess.”     “Want friend?  Gau come?”     “Gau stay,” he said as he offered a brave smile.  “Your friends need you more.  Especially Tina.”     “Want go with armor man,” he insisted.  “Armor man more sad.”     “I… I really doubt that.  I just lost my favorite general…  Tina, though…”     The man crossed his arms, looking toward the group.  Tina had gone quiet, but she was still clinging to Lock with her face against his body.     “She lost her new friend.  Guess she really liked him, too…”
“Magic girl hurt outside,” Gau told him.  “Armor man hurt in here…”     He gave a blink as Gau thumped his chest.     “Armor man no cry.  Armor man strong, outside!  Strong like Gau, awoo!!  But, armor man feel bad inside.  Drink ‘happy water?’  Write book?  Not sure.  But, Gau know armor man feel sad.  Face sad.  Heart sad.  And… Gau sad… ‘cuz new friend sad.”     He frowned a little more, looking even more concerned.     “Armor man go, Gau go, too!  Be beast!  Make armor many happy!”     Wedge couldn’t help but smile.  Gau was absolutely determined to cheer him up…     “Gau know hug?” he offered.
Almost immediately, the child jumped into his arms and gave him a tight squeeze that made his borrowed Magicite poke into his chest.  He didn’t mind, though… he was just happy that Gau wanted a hug and, honestly?  He kind of needed one, himself… though, he would have preferred it to be from a happy Tina, if he had his choice.
“Armor man be okay?” Gau asked as he dropped to the ground and sat like a dog.     “Armor man be okay… eventually,” he told the boy as he ruffled his hair.  “I have a lot of thinking to do.  Today’s… been one for the record books.” –––––
    “General Leo…”
The air was somber as the group gathered in a clearing just east of the town.  It was there that they decided to give the general a proper burial.  Once it was done, Tina stood near the freshly-overturned dirt, having placed a bouquet of colorful flowers on it.  Everyone else stood a small distance away, giving her space.
“Everyone wants power…” she said to herself.  “Do they want to be like me…?”     She paused before looking at the blank headstone placed at the head of the gravesite decorated with flowers.     “I wanted…” she whispered as she felt sadness find her, again.  “I wanted you to teach me… about so many things, General Leo…  I was hoping that…”     The girl had to look away and compose herself.  Lock took a step her toward her… only to be stopped by the man in green – Edgar, the king of Figaro.  When he shook his head, the other man settled back down.  Not long after, they both heard Tina give a sniffle, then a sigh.     “You were taken before your time… taken for no reason other than a mean, cruel man didn’t like you.  I barely had any time to know you, General Leo… but, you seemed so wise and so kind…  It’s not fair…  It’s not fair…”
After another momentary silence, Tina finally turned away and walked right over to Lock and Edgar before returning to her place on the former’s shoulder.  She was done crying… but, she clearly had more grieving to do.  As that happened, the elder of the town walked up to the grave and made a couple of gestures.     “Ashes to ashes,” he said, “dust to dust.  May he fly with the angels.”     With that, he walked out of the clearing, leaving the group to their business.
“Gau…”     Wedge blinked.  He’d been standing there without his helmet, quietly taking everything in… when he noticed that Gau was tugging on his pantleg and looking at him.     “What’s up?” he asked as he knelt to look at the kid.     “Armor man like magic girl?” he asked.     The soldier hesitated.  He’d asked that so innocently…     “Tina’s… my friend, too,” he quietly explained, “but Lock is taking care of her.  It’s okay.  I don’t really like him… but, if Tina trusts him that much, who am I to argue?  Heh.”     “Armor man still sad?” was the child’s next question.     “Heh.  Yeah… armor man still sad,” Wedge said with a nod.  “General Leo was great.  He let me and Biggs goof off, all the time, and–”     He paused… then, he deeply frowned.     “Biggs…”
Gau was left giving a confused look as Wedge suddenly left the clearing, then quietly followed on all-fours.  It didn’t seem like the soldier was going to stop walking and, in fact, seemed like he was heading out of town.  But, as he got to the south entrance…     “Fight lady!!”     He was stopped by the appearance of someone he definitely didn’t need to bump into.
“Wedge!” she called with a look of distress.  “What is going on…?  Another Imperial ship docked next to ours, then I heard the rumble of Magitek Powered Armor units…  When I saw the Blackjack fly over, I finally worked up the nerve to come here… but, everything’s scorched and ruined!  Plus…”     She paused, looking down.  Both Wedge and Gau followed her line-of-sight to see…     “I found Shadow’s dog…”     Interceptor was in her arms.  And… he looked like he’d found one-or-more armored units, himself, judging by his injuries.
“Kefka betrayed us,” was his simple response.     “K-Kefka…?!” she exclaimed, accidentally disturbing the sleeping dog.  “A-ah, sorry, Interceptor…  Kefka…?  Here?  Why?”     “Take a wild guess.”     She grimaced, then she shook her head.     “Gau, where are our friends?  Are they here?”     “Gau, Gau!” the child barked.  A second later, he trotted back toward the center of town, followed by the lady general.     “Yeah…  Go find your friends,” Wedge said to himself.  “I–”     “Armor man!”     He blinked, then turned around.  Gau was looking out from behind a building.
“Come!” he said.     “No, I–”     “Armor man friend!” the boy interrupted.  “Armor man friend of magic lady, armor man friend of Gau!  Armor man come back or… or Gau drag back!  Grrr!!”     There was no reasoning with the little wild child…  So, despite his better judgment, he followed Gau and Celes back into town, then into the clearing.
“W-what’s wrong with Interceptor?!  Oh, geez… bring ‘im here!”
Shortly after Celes arrived at the grave, Lock ordered her to bring Interceptor over.  He was quick to remove his bandanna and, with a combination of a Hi-Potion and that makeshift bandage, he treated the poor dog’s wounds.
“As if General Leo wasn’t enough…” he muttered as Interceptor weakly resisted.  “Seems like even hired help like Shadow isn’t safe from those bastards.  Damn the Empire!”     He sighed, shaking his head.  Then, he re-focused on the slender hound.     “That’s the best I can do, for now.  Thanks for not biting me, ‘Ceptor.”     “Poor doggie…”     Lock looked over and noticed that the little girl in the beret had walked over.  After audibly sympathizing, she sat next to the beat-up pup.     “Don’t worry,” she told him as he settled next to her, “Lilum will keep you safe!”     Surprisingly – at least, for everyone but Lock, Tina, and Stragos – Interceptor seemed… relaxed around Lilum.  So much so that he put his head on her lap and even let her pet him.  It was kind of sweet.
    “General Christophe…  He… he’s really…?”
Celes stood in front of the fresh grave, her hands over her mouth and her eyes staring at the fresh dirt.  She couldn’t believe what she’d been told…     “Kefka…”     But, rather than stay sad about it…     “He’ll pay for what he’s done!”     She grew angry!
“The Empire betrayed us all, it seems…”     After Celes paid her respects, the entire party – including the Imperial Magitek Soldier – quietly left the clearing and met in the square of the town to continue their conversation.  As they settled, it was the man with long, white hair and nobleman’s clothing that spoke up.
“What do you mean, Setzer?” Tina asked, despite knowing better.     “Heh.  We were this close,” he explained as he lit a cigarette for himself, “to being caught in a trap, ourselves.  That’s why we’re here, in fact!”     “We managed to escape, ere,” the black-haired man with a pencil-thin moustache explained.  “King Figaro’s information is to thank.”     Lock smiled.  “Using that royal clout, huh?”     “‘A little kindness goes a long way,’ as they say…” the king said with a grin.  “My kindness toward a tea maiden allowed her to open up and share some interesting information about the goings-on in Vector.  She was quite well-informed… and, quite lovely.”     “So… you flirted the info outta her…” his brother said with a disapproving frown.     “My dear Macías,” Edgar said as he waved a finger, “don’t misunderstand my intentions.  Yes, my actions could be misinterpreted as idle flirtations but, I assure you: it was a simple courtesy.  Cour-te-sy!  It is my kingly duty to make the fairer sex feel… appreciated!”     Macías rolled his eyes with an “Uh-huh…”     “That aside…” the young king said, changing the topic, “I believe we need to rethink our tactics.  Let’s return to the airship, formulate a plan, and stop the empire from entering the Eidolons’ World.”     “May I come with you?”     Both Edgar and Macías blinked, then turned to face the source of the new voice.
“And, you are?” Edgar asked as he looked at the old man who stood more-than-a-head shorter than him.     “That’s Stragos,” Lock told him from a short distance away.  “He’s from here.”     “He’s descended from the magic-users of this land,” Tina added.  “He can help us!”     The young king gave a puzzled look between his two friends…  “Magic-users, you say?”     “I can’t just let the Empire abuse the power of the Eidolons like they are!” Stragos suddenly told them.  “I aim to stop them in their tracks!”     “Lilum, too!!”     All eyes fell upon the old man’s granddaughter.  She had spoken up from behind and was hopping in place with her arms over her head.
“No,” was her grandfather’s flat response.  “Stay here.”     She made a noise and pouted… something that got a laugh out of Macías.     “What’s funny?” she asked him with a pout.     “It’s cute that you wanna help,” he told her, “but, a kid would just slow us down!”     She threw her hands up, putting on an angry face.  “What the hell, muscle-man?!”     That just made him laugh even harder!     “Well, you’ve sure got a lot of spunk, missy!  But–”     “Grrrr…”     He stopped, staring as she reached under her hat and whipped out a paintbrush.     “Hold still…” she told him in a vaguely-threatening way. “I’m painting your portrait!”     “Whoa!  No, stop!”     As she twirled the brush between her fingers, Tina and Lock both ran over, pulling their friend aside.  Meanwhile, Stragos snatched the painter’s tool away from her, much to her further annoyance.  All that… just seemed to confuse the ox-of-a-man.
“Lilum…” the old mage sighed, “you simply won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, will you?”     “Nuh-uh!” Lilum said with a shake of her head.     “Bless you for having your mother’s temperament…”  He paused before telling her… “If that’s the case, then…”     The mage politely handed the brush back with a smile.     “You can come.”     “Oh, yeah!”  The girl leaped up, triumphantly throwing her fist into the air.  “Thanks, Gran’pa!”     “Just, behave yourself.  Okay?”     “Okay, Gran’pa!” she told him with a bright smile.  “Lilum promises!”
“Well, that settles that!”     Macías gave a nod to everyone, looking satisfied.  Then…     “Let’s head out!”     He headed the pack as they headed out of town.  Not long after…     “Hey, perv!  You comin’?”     Lilum walked back, getting the attention of the man who’d hesitated to leave.
“E-excuse me?” King Figaro asked, being drawn from his thoughts.     “Lilum said, ‘you comin’?’”  She offered a smile as she said, “C’mon, Kingy!  If you’re niiice, you may get a pooortraaait from The Great Lilum Arrowny, Mistress of the Long Stroke!  You do wanna pose for Lilum, don’cha?”     There was an awkward period of silence as Edgar stared at the girl.  She just stood there with her hands behind her back, cutely shimmying and happily smiling.     “You… uh… have quite the spirit.”     “Thanks, Kingy!” she said with a wink.  “Lilum thinks you’re alright, too!”     He rubbed his cheek before awkwardly asking, “Sssay, uh… how… old are you, exactly?”     “Why, Lilum is ten-and-a-half years old!” she proudly proclaimed.  A second later, she gave him a suspicious look and asked, “Whhyyy…?”     “N-no reason!” he exclaimed, sounding flustered.     She narrowed her eyes… then, she gave a shrug.  “Whatever!”
As she spun around and started skipping away, she told the king, “Better hurry up, Kingy!  Lilum won’t wait for you, forrreeeverrr!”  And, as she walked out of town, Edgar had to take a minute to catch the breath that had left him and adjust his cloak.     “Pull it back, Edgar…” he quietly told himself.  “She may act grown up, but she’s just a kid.  A real cute kid…”     Almost immediately, he slapped himself.     “J-just focus on the mission!  Gods…  The last thing my kingdom needs is that kind of publicity!  Uh… wait, why am I talking to myself…?”     All-at-once, he called to the girl before running after.  However, as he left…     “Armor man!”     Someone else came back.
“What?  Gau?  What are you doing back here?”     Wedge was stood near the well of the town – his new favorite spot, apparently – and hadn’t been paying any attention to anything that was going on.     “Armor man come!  Join friends!” the wild child said as he walked over, standing upright.  “Fight bad man!”     “N-no, that’s okay…” was his response.  He figured that Tina and her friends had everything under control and, despite his newfound distaste for the Empire… he couldn’t see himself being any use to them on their quest to dismantle it.  But…     “Join friends!”     The kid who had befriended him seemed as stubborn as the little loudmouthed girl…
“Listen, Gau…” he started to tell the blond boy in animal hides, “I really don’t think your friends need my help.  I mean, up until today… I was part of the people they’re about to go fight!  So–”     “Fight lady was bad!  Fight lady good, now!” he interrupted.  “Magic lady was bad!  Magic lady good, now!  Armor man good…  Gau know, others learn!  So, come!”     “No… no, it’s fine.”  Wedge gave a soft smile.  “I’ll just… stay here, where my best friend and favorite officer died.  Maybe, in time, the nice folk might even forgive me and let me stay here in town!  Yeah… yeah, I could see myself being happy in this town…”     “But…  Gau like armor man…  If armor man stay…”     The boy deeply frowned, his eyes looking right into Wedge’s.     “Gau be sad…”
Wedge narrowed his eyes – forgetting that Gau could see them, since he was still holding his helmet.  He knew – and, couldn’t believe – that Gau trying to manipulate him, like that!  Still, there was something about his words… something in the way he was frowning and staring… something genuine… that made him eventually say…     “O… o-okay.  Just… gimme a second?”
The soldier met up with Gau some short time later.  When asked what he was doing, he wouldn’t say… but, in actuality, he’d decided to leave something of his own on General Leo Christophe’s grave…
    A tarnished sword… and, a beat-up, red-orange helmet with a lightning bolt on it.

Woojin: the Afterthought
Tumblr media
Starlink Intergalactic Navigator
You are in: The Reckoning Star System
Ch. 1 of my Stray Kids: A Literary Experience series
Previous Chapter
Kim Woojin had always been more of a background character. Quiet but not too quiet. Funny but not enough to be noticeable. Good-looking but not in the way that stood out. He was average, maybe even boring, if you asked him.
He had friends but none of them were best friends.
He had parents and siblings but they never really felt like family.
He had significant others but he never really fell in love.
Woojin was sick of living life in the middle ground.
The only things that really made him feel a rush of emotions were books. He’d always been an avid reader, ever since he was a kid. There were no middle grounds in books and in books he wasn’t stuck in just one body, in one life. In books, he could experience anything and everything and that was priceless to him.
It wasn’t until he expressed this sentiment to his kind-of friend, kind-of acquaintance, Bang Chan, in eleventh grade — Woojin wasn’t really one to express his feelings, Chan just had this aura that made you feel comfortable spilling your guts to him — that he made the suggestion for Woojin to actually write books of his own.
Woojin had been so in shock, so baffled and intrigued and mystified both by the idea and by the fact that he hadn’t thought of it himself that he didn’t really say much for the rest of the day.
When he got home, he’d opened his laptop and gotten so wrapped up that he didn’t move from it once from the time he got home until his alarm clock rang for school the next morning.
He hadn’t felt something so natural to him since he started reading. It was like there was no beginning or end to his obsession with weaving whole universes out of mere letters strung together in whatever order he liked.
He came to school the next day looking wild, disheveled, and probably a little crazy but he’d gone straight up to Chan — who was sleep deprived himself — and ranted about the experience and what he’d written.
They’d been best friends ever since and Woojin called him Chris from then on (which was previously something only his younger brother called him.)
In some ways, Woojin was still the same person.
He was still more of a background character, quiet but not too quiet, still funny but not enough to be noticeable, still good-looking but not in the way that stood out. He was still average.
But he had a best friend now.
He had a family — Chris and Jeongin.
And he’d fallen in love. With Chris. Stupid, selfless Christopher Bang who would never have time to love him back and probably still wouldn’t even if he had the time.
