"Declan Lynch was (not really) a liar."

Declan's "lies" about Niall from Ch 12 of Call Down the Hawk are buried in truth. When asked "What does your father do for a living?" he gave a couple answers that he deemed as lies:

"He sells high-end sports cars in the summer, life insurance in the winter. He does financial consulting for divorcees. He does advertising work for international companies in English-speaking markets. He's in the FBI." Chapter 12, page 88

Here's my unnecessary thoughts/analysis on this:

"He sells high-end sports cars in the summer, life insurance in the winter."

This is referencing his traveling for work to sell his dream things. The life insurance part to me screams the danger from that life, of Declan not knowing if he was going to come home okay after a trip away. Declan was the one who accompanied him on some of these trips, he knew the danger of his father's arrogance, of his father's profession. He was probably worried for him.

Niall's trips were already mentioned in CDTH but in a romantic way from Ronan's POV:

"This was his father, after all, leaving the Barns with a trunk full of dreams and returning some months later with a trunk full of money and gifts. This was his mother, after all, sending him off and then welcoming him home. Ronan remembered the reunions well. The way Aurora's smile got unwrapped along with the rest of the parcels in Niall's trunk, the way Niall's was dusted off from a high shelf where Aurora kept it." Chapter 6, p33

Obviously Ronan and Declan had differing opinions on Niall's trips away. Ronan longs to be like his father, to be able to leave the Barns and travel (to live in Cambridge with Adam). Declan sees the danger Niall put them all in, his father at fault for the loss of Aurora...

"He's an anesthesiologist."

IMO this is Declan's dark humor. He knows about Aurora, he watched her "fall asleep" right in front of him. He knows about the dreamt creatures in the barn and he knows the risks of Matthew being tied so closely to Ronan while Ronan is in this deep dark depression. This is a TRUTH. He puts things to sleep, professionally.

"He does advertising work for international companies in English-speaking markets. "

Again referencing Niall's job. Niall would go to the Fairy Markets talking of this secret "Greywaren" he had almost like he was advertising it.

"He's in the FBI."

Does Declan already know about the moderators at this point? Or does he just know of times the government has had to step in to cover up another dreamer's mess? Had Niall been one of those dreamers?

Anyway TLDR: Declan Lynch is about as much of a liar as Ronan "I don't lie" Lynch. Everything that comes out of his mouth is half truths and buried in truth, you just have to dig a little. Or maybe he just desperately wants to stop living in lies and secrets.

Regardless, both Lynch bros lied to Matthew so 🫠

hi i love that we're reading in sync! how do you feel about the audiobooks? i couldn't handle them at first but i've come to appreciate their charm lol

the gray man is most interesting to me as a point of comparison for adam and gansey. i love the wry narration in his chapters and his interactions with maura, calla, and persephone although i do think it's baffling that he gets woven into the family with so little conflict wrt the niall lynch murder.

re: adam, i think it's absolutely worth looking at their respective tarot readings and how they're both associated with swords, with the gray man pulling cards of a higher number and presumably further along the path of swords than adam (more alone, calmer [more repressed?], more dangerous) whereas adam having the opportunity to find balance and master all four suits (which are represented by the magician card. persephone talks about balance in the pulling another card chapter!). i'm not tarot knowledgeable especially outside the series but jam unloneliest (who is very much tarot knowledgeable) and i have had some really great discussions about this!

aside from tarot, they have so much in common- their pragmatism, their practical natures, their eye for detail (probably stemming from hypervigilance from abuse), their disdain for little incompetences, their relationship to family and violence and abuse and being on the run and estrangement and home, etc. i have a whole list going in my notes.

the gray man and gansey are also linked through their respective quests: for "the" greywaren and glendower, respectively, and their contrasting motives for and attitudes towards searching. gansey is searching for magic in an often mundane world, for a purpose in life, for a way to fulfill what he feels is his obligation to the world, for answers he feels he needs to keep living, whereas the gray man is searching so he can survival on a much baser level. they both fall in love with henrietta (and in the process, blue and maura).

the gray man's dream about the knife attack in tdt ch 11 is one of my all time favorite passages in trc and it parallels with adam's experience of not being able to separate himself from his father's abuse, feeling as if he is both abuser and survivor and weapon all at once. the knife specifically also ties into ronan as a knife or spear or something sharp on which you could cut yourself, tools vs weapons (as both magic and knives can be both), and him inheriting the mitsubishi with the knife decal on it at the end of the book?! the symbolism...

i also wonder if the gray man and his brother had a lot of additional development that didn't make it into the books and spilled over into carmen and nathan's dynamic in td3 (knives, scissors... it's not a huge leap), although i do think the rather faceless specter of the gray man's brother makes him more fearsome.

what do you like most about the gray man? would love to hear your thoughts too.

I remember you saying in a different ask that AC is gonna be a Lynch brothers centric fic based on Supernatural (which, as a former die-hard spn fan I cannot wait to read, my God), and now I was wondering if there will be romance elements based on the show as well? Are we getting Adam burning on the ceiling in chapter 1 or something? HAHAHAHAH sorry I’m just too curious (and excited)

HELLO... YOUR ENTHUSIASM IS REALLY SWEET. I am going to be sparse on details, not because I don't want to talk about it, but because the story is filled with so many twists that I don't want to accidentally spoil anything.

Adam and Jordan will both be part of the narrative as romantic interests! They will not be burnt alive on the ceiling in Ch. 1 (LOL). While this story is primarily about Ronan & Declan, other characters (incl. Adam and Jordan) also leave their mark on the narrative.

I can't believe a total of 3 bodies have been buried this book and Ronan hasn't stolen Gansey's car once.

GOSH, ronan lynch and his dependency KILLS ME

Throughout the book, many of Ronan’s actions and thoughts are often directly influenced by those around him. He is a character who thrives on companionship. This can be especially seen in his dreams, where most of his creations are out of consideration for the people around him (e.g the manibus, epipens, camaro, etcetc). And if not, then they are created to keep him company, like chainsaw, and Matthew, bred and borne out of his loss and loneliness.

Aside from that, his arcs mainly grow around his reactions toward those of others, the most prominent of all being the death of his father, where he struggles to find the remaining pieces of himself after losing him. Even in his search towards what it means to be a dreamer— though it is definitely fueled by his need for self-discovery— it also holds great relation to what truth it will grant him about his father.

But what really spurned this whole rant for me tho is ch 46, where he explicitly asks gansey, “Tell me what to do,” “Tell me where to go,”

this scene BROKE ME and it gives such clear insight as to what Ronan Lynch’s character is. He is a character of devotion who’s reliance on others is as much his downfall as it is his strength. He hardly ever does things out of thought for himself, though it isnt very obvious. (WHICH IS ANOTHER THING I WOULD LOVE TO RAVE ABOUT BUT ILL STOP MYSELF FOR TODAY) In this specific scene, ronan is at a loss with himself. He knows what he wants, but he NEEDS a higher being to guide him, needs someone to tell him whether what hes doing is right or wrong. Basically, ronan is a racing car with no sense of direction.

This is probably one of the reasons why Gansey and Ronan get along so well. Gansey is a character whose crippling self-worth is heavily reliant on helping others (sorry gansey but its true). It makes him feel useful, needed, it makes him feel worthier of being brought back to life. So to have Ronan, a mess of a person (sorry ronan), a person who relies on HIM of all people, it makes gansey feel secure, just as it does with ronan. They tether each other. Like, gansey just fully takes ronan in in all his shambles and is like YES! LET ME TAKE CARE OF U! I NEED THAT JUST AS MUCH AS U NEED THAT! ILY!

ALSO this is probably one of the reasons why, on the other hand, Gansey and Adam clash so often. Unlike Ronan, Adam is a highly independent character, he likes doing things his own way, half bc his past bludgeoned him to be used to doing them on his own. This conflicts with Gansey’s character whose ingrained need to be of help to others is constantly being rejected and abhorred by mr one man army adam

Adam came to slowly, which was always the case when he shared a bed with Ronan. Something about safety and comfort, something about calmness and familiarity. Cheesy, Ronan called it, as if he didn’t share Adam’s exact sentiment about it.

The sunlight was streaming into the bedroom, autumn having not fully gripped Virginia yet and Ronan having forgotten to fully close the curtains. Adam blinked, feeling his body gain consciousness gradually, with his arms doing so first. Specifically his left arm which was being crushed to near death beneath Ronan.

Adam groaned, pressing his face against Ronan’s neck. “Ronan,” he croaked out, nudging him with his forehead. “Roll over.”

Ronan gave a dissatisfied sound when Adam nudged him again. “No.”

“My arm.”

“No.”

“Ronan.” Adam felt more awake now, slight annoyance making him huff. “Get off.”

“Fuck off.”

“Ronan.” He used his free hand to try to shove him away, but Ronan merely rolled over to his side to face him, blinking vexedly at him.

“What?” he asked, his voice slightly hoarse with morning disuse.

“My arm,” Adam repeated. “You’re lying on it.”

“Sounds like a you problem.”

Adam had had enough. “Don’t act as if I don’t know how fucking ticklish you are, Ronan Lynch.”

Ronan gave a whine. “But I just want to cuddle, Parish.” He emphasized his words by wrapping an arm around him to pull him even closer, Adam’s arm still being thoroughly crushed beneath him.

“Ronan, for fuck’s sake,” Adam said, laughing anyway as he used his free hand to attack his side. “You’re so annoying.”

Ronan groaned and tried to elbow his hand away. “Me? You’re the one waking me up like this.”

“Just roll over and I’ll cuddle you.”

“Ask nicely.”

“Oh, fuck off.” Adam stuck his hand under the covers to squeeze at Ronan’s thigh, causing him to cry out and kick, and Adam repeated it when he missed, knowing he was playing with fire now. “Get off.”

“You get off.” Ronan’s voice had a hint of laughter to it, something tired and bordering on panic simultaneously. While being incredibly sensitive it was hard to properly get him, possibly due to him having grown up with brothers and knowing how to keep his reactions at bay. Adam enjoyed the journey that was getting Ronan to giggle his head off, but that morning was not the time, not with his arm’s survival at risk.

“Ronan,” he said again, trying to sound stern, and Ronan only finally - finally - moved off of his poor limb when Adam aimed a particularly ruthless tickle to his inner thigh.

“Jesus Ch- fine! Jeez.” Ronan was glaring at him as Adam tried to shake life back into his arm. “You’re so fucking annoying, Parish.”

“Your need for proximity isn’t my fault, Lynch.”

“My nee- You’re the one who probably tried to hug me to death last night if your arm was beneath me.”

None of this was serious they knew, but it was common ground to bicker. It usually led to other things anyway.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll come cuddle you now.”

“Don’t touch me- no!”

Adam laughed as Ronan tried to evade him, but he managed to cling onto him anyway, nuzzling his neck while his fingers gently dug into his side and lower back, legs wrapping around him to keep him in place.

Ronan was laughing soon enough, and it was lovely and glorious and led to eventual revenge, but Adam was fine with it.

When they made it to their gate at the airport, it was pretty late and they had a six hour flight ahead of them so Ronan wandered off in search of coffee. While waiting in line he regretted not asking Adam if he wanted anything. Was he a coffee or tea person? Could he only have decaf? Ronan needed to get used to having someone else around. 

Ronan Lynch had been single for nearly a decade. His last relationship was when he was in his late teens, early twenties, and that sent him down a spiral of substance abuse and isolation. He was thankful to have Gansey and Noah pick up the pieces when it all fell apart, but since then he only had flings and hookups, nothing lasting longer than a day or two. He was used to being alone. 

He decided to get a black coffee and some sugary latte concoction to see which Adam would want. When he made it back to the gate, Adam was slumped down in his seat, cheek in his hand, sweatshirt hood up, eyes closed… was he snoring? 

“Hey,” Ronan sat beside him and Adam opened his eyes slowly, rubbing them with his sleeve. 

“Hey.”

Ronan held out both cups. “Black coffee or ultra sugar, which one?” 

“Oh, you didn’t have to get me anything.”

Ronan blinked at him. “We’re married, dumbass. Which one?”

“Did you just call me a dumbass?”

“Yeah.”

Adam looked at him for a beat and then grabbed the black coffee, taking a sip, cradling the warm cup in his hands. “Thanks, asshole.” 

“You’re welcome.” Ronan fought back a smirk and slumped down in his seat, staring off at the flight information screen.
