Summary: With Kaido's defeat, the people and country of Wano can breathe once more. A time to celebrate and rebuild and open up the borders of the closed off country! The story line rings a bell to the Straw Hats but soon goes off course as they stay for a short time after the party, a wish made by Sanji to help the villages that need food for their starving people. It’s when one of those convoy’s are attacked by a mysterious beast, and claims of cursed illnesses and fallen guardian deities arise, that they realize they might have bitten off more than they could chew. And it all has something to do with Sanji feeding a little fox. ~ Post-Wano and still in Wano, mild spoilers up to chapter 1040, but also not really dealing with anything story related.

a/n: you know, when my therapist told me that writing stories could be a good way to work on traumas, idk if fanfic is exactly what she envisioned...

warnings: Joel Miller x reader, MILD SPOILERS for the last of us (both games and the hbo series), slow burn, age gap (20 years), timeline wise this is set in between the first and second game (so when they live in Jackson), ptsd, heavy angst, hint to an ed, talk of DARK things (forced pregnancy, rape, drugging, essentially being held as a slave, death/murder, solitary confinement, suicidal thoughts)

“What are you doing here?” you blinked, as the figure knocking at your door turned out to be none other than Joel. 

“Maria sent me.”

“Of course, she did…” you sighed as you swiftly stepped aside for him to enter the house that had only been yours for a few weeks now. 

“She was worried that you’re not eating,” he held up a small container of food for you to see, then set it down on your dining table directly to the right of the entryway.

Closing the door after him, you then leaned against the wall, “well, I’m not hungry.”

Glancing up at you, he exhaled, “right,” then moved towards the door again. 

Anxiously crossing your arms, you spoke up as he passed you, “hey Joel?”

“Yeah?” he stopped in his tracks, trying to catch your skittish eyes. 

“Can I-…” you tried, then promptly remembered how you’d yelled at him, and even though he always seemed to see right through it, always responded to it with that usual unwavering presence, you still couldn’t help but shrivel up and say, “no, forget it, it’s not important…”

“What is it?”

“No, it’s fine,” you stared down at the swirling woodgrain on the floors and waved a hand, “you go…”

Not moving his body an inch, he spoke, “Y/n,” making you meet his gaze. 

“I just-…” you breathed deeply, “Maria told me to talk to someone and she had this idea that it might be easier if it was with someone that I didn’t really know…”

“Okay,” he nodded gently, as if you were a baby bird he didn’t want to spook away.  

Feeling your heart nearly beat out of your chest, you struggled, “can I talk to you? Can I-… can I try? Try to tell you?”

“Sure,” he answered swiftly, not needing a single second to ponder it, “but are you sure you wouldn’t be more comfortable with Tommy or someone else?” 

“Tommy still sees me as that little girl I was back when I first met him, and I don’t wanna take that away from him. I don’t wanna ruin that any more than I already have. I don’t care if your view of me changes after you hear because you didn’t know me before. I don’t mind if you look at me as if I’m broken,” the pained exhaled that then flowed out past his lips was so faint that you almost missed it entirely, “also, the thought of telling any of them exactly what happened just makes it seem so much more real and I don’t think I could handle that…” just the thought caused fearful tears to trickle down your cheeks, “to be honest, I can barely handle it now… and you obviously don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, I would never force you to do anything,” you squeezed your eyes shut and rambled anxiously, “and it’s not like I’ve been abundantly nice to you lately, or really since we met, but I swear it had nothing to do with you, I just-”

“Y/n,” he cut you off, breathing as if he was trying to do it for the both of you, “I know, it’s fine. I don’t mind you using me as a punching bag. Rather me than someone who could potentially misinterpret it, although, with the way everyone here walks on eggshells around you, I don’t think they’d take your swings personally. So, if you want me to listen, then I’ll listen.”

“Right…” you would surely break the skin if you kept on digging your nails into your palms as hard as you’d unconsciously been doing. Slowly moving towards the dining area, you both sat down at the table. For a long moment, you just sat there, quietly losing your mind while he patiently waited. “I don’t know how to do this,” you uttered into your palms as you hid behind them, “I don’t know where to start.”

“Just whatever comes to you first, it doesn’t have to be in order, doesn’t have to be everything now, just start somewhere and then go from there. You can just pretend I’m not even here if that helps.”

“Okay…” you choked out a small sob, then timidly began, “they, um… they had this room down in the basement… there weren’t any windows, wasn’t any light, so you couldn’t really tell if it was day or night or if you were down there for 1 hour or 24. They, um, didn’t wanna grow bored of me, so that’s where they’d put me in order to keep me out of sight, keep me interesting for them. They always had me restrained in one way or another, kept weapons on me to get me to behave or even occasionally drugged me, although they saved that up for the most important people there… it wasn’t even the kind of drugs that made me forget, it just felt like they threw me right back in that dark hole again and I just couldn’t do anything. I could still feel every single thing, but I couldn’t even blink.” 

“I don’t really know when exactly it was, but I think it was during my first winter there that I-… it was inevitable for it to happen at some point… and they didn’t wanna try and perform an abortion, didn’t have the right equipment or the skills for it, so they just let nature run its course. And then when it happened they-…” your voice broke as you then uttered through your sobs, “you know, I didn’t even get to hold her…” silently hating yourself as you then actually admitted out loud, “and a part of me wished so hard for me to have just died during the delivery. For a while I let myself think that I’d finally found a way out. That I would finally be free. That my little girl would help me end it all… and for the longest time, I couldn’t let myself love her, because that’s not how it’s supposed to be. That’s not how you’re supposed to make a new life. It shouldn’t be a consequence of being a slave, of being raped and tortured. She was a consequence. She was a consequence, but I still grew to love her. I didn’t want her, but I still loved her. And they slaughtered her in front of me like a fucking stock animal.”

I am absolutely loving a thing of vikings, I'm currently on chapter 29 and I've been so curious about the opening excerpts in each chapter. Obviously all information about berk, dragons, and their overall effect on history is fictional, but have any of them been excepts from real books or sources? And do you have any recommendations on where to start reading/researching to anyone who's interested in learning more about this period of history? Feel free to ignore this whole ask of course I've just been curious and I'm deeply invested in the story you're telling

There are some excerpts from real world religious texts later on (I won't say which, because of potential for spoilers).

As for recommendations on where to read, honestly, Wikipedia's articles are a good place to start for summaries on the individuals, followed by their sources at the bottom of the pages, but there's no one "big book of the history of the 1040s" that I've seen yet. It tends to be left underexamined in favor of, say, 1066 and the succession crisis in England, so I've been having to piece things together from a bunch of fragmentary sources. (Not helped by certain cultures destroying their records because of dynastic ambitions grumble grumble grumble)

In a strange twist of fate, it seems Junko Enoshima had never caused the worst event in human history. This causes none of the killing games to happen, leaving all of the characters we know and love attending Hopes Peak Academy as students! This means Hajime never went through with the Kamakura project. The DR2 cast is a grade above the rest of the characters.

chapter 1040 spoilers–double wordplay (kid & law edition)

What a title, amiright? Falling on deaf ears and falling on deaf ears, cos’ Big Mom is of course falling, and if she hadn’t landed in the ocean, then she surely would’ve fallen on the deaf and unaware ears of the citizens of Wano.

BUT, more importantly, her soul pocus is not working on the members of the Hearts, Kid and Beast Pirates (although it initially was)

because

Law’s got a R (oom) within a Room. That’s how I’m interpreting it at the moment, anyway 😉

which makes everything that Big Mom (Misery, Law’s crew mate) say fall on deaf ears, and it looks like Law’s in danger, but never fear cos his observational haki and awakened state is obviously something else:

Okay, that’s out of the way! I like that Mama does not give up. She’s great.

I think she’s out for the count for this particular battle, and probably for the rest of Wano, but you can’t keep a good woman down. And so it seems that Kid and Law have more strength than Germa 66 or than Niji and Yonji, although we don’t know the whole circumstances of their capture (see the cover below).

Seems that Big Mom isn’t keen on wiping out the Vinsmokes any more, and would rather keep them pinned like butterflies.

Makes you wonder what kind of slaves she would’ve made Law and Kid if she’d won, if that came about, and the 50 years she threatens to take of their lives is the same amount she took of Pedro’s, I think.

She took all of Zepo’s lifespan, because he only had 30 years left to live (it’s via Mama’s roulette wheel, and it’s a bit complicated, so best to read Zepo’s and Pedro’s wikis if you’re curious). Zepo was Bepo’s brother, so it’s probably just as well that Bepo doesn’t seem to be an onlooker here. 

AND Kid’s attacks 

by their nature

are bigger than him, so we don’t get so many cool shots of him in action, but more so of his devices (which are also very cool). 

There are so many side by side shots of Kid and Law, with their dialogue more levelled at Big Mom than one another (I think), and the back in forth is great.  These chapters animated should be golden. 

The battle ends, not surprisingly, like this:

with Kid and Law’s crews and the Marys (I think) declaring victory.

Love that equal time and respect is given to each crew. and that we get to see all these new faces.

And surprisingly in the final scene, or second to final is Law sitting there on a rock (see two panels above) which is a fairly common pose for him by now. I think the nodachi might play into it). And Kid is perhaps slumped back, but the picture quality is too bad too determine. 

It is just that Law was about to be pulverised last week (two seconds ago in the battle) after he lost stamina from using the puncture/shock wille move and

his crew were warning of imminent death, but they were worried this week too. Both crews were.

The R.Room doesn’t look as if Law would have to exert as much energy (but he’s gotta keep it in place until Big Mom crashes into the ocean, right? Cora keeps his ‘room’ active until Law survives. Law keeps his active until Big Mom is defeated. Maybe. Just musing).

Anyway, there was some other cool stuff going on, and I’ll write a separate post for it. I never dreamt that Oda would give us so much Kid and Law (and glimpses of their crew). Yay! But Big Mom is an emperor. A good battle is her due.

The latest chapter was one of the best in a long time. It would look really bad if Kid and Law just somehow managed to defeat Big Mom with no basis for it, but Oda found a way to both give victory to the Supernovas and not tarnish the Emperors’ reputation. You can’t have your cake and eat it too? Well, Oda proved you can.

And in addition, with this, he at the same time completed the most boring subplot. The end was quick and extra thicc.

chapter 1040: spoilers, extras, stuff that is not kid, law nor big mom

So my main observations on Kid and Law are in this post here. But, let’s look at the stuff that ain’t the two supernova or yonkou.

Guess it wasn’t Brook standing over Zoro making a joke last week. Ah...I’m hoping Chopper’s on his way to find him (or Franky. Frank y was wandering the halls a few chapters ago, calling Zoro’s name). But Chopper and Doctor Miyagi (or his nurse) are a bit topsy-turvy

so maybe they are taking a shortcut through the floors to land just near Zoro. Robin’s with Brook, which is good. CP0 haven’t caught up with her yet then, but then where is Izou? (we’ll find out. Or Marco).

It looks as if Raizuo

has won his battle, and it does seem that water is needed in general (there’s a dire need for it), but why does Fukurokuju need it in particular. Interesting to know the history between these two.

And as @ninhaoma-ya​ pointed out in her great analysis, Komurasaki/Hiyori has the fox mask back on and is very stable while Orochi is tumbling about with everyone else as the whole of Onigashima is affected by Big Mom boring a hole through the castle and the island (well, that was Law’s work, but she’s helping out).

All of those speech bubbles are Big Mom’s by the way. Also, remember how

Orochi told Kanjuro that the crypts of the Kurozumi were buried at the bottom of the castle?

(Chapter 1030), and so he drew Kazenbo

I think there’s going to be something about the current form of Kazenbo (below discovering that there are no crypts, no bodies, no bones

that brings us back to this stage of Kanjuro from chapter 974:

Where better for Kanjuro, or the dark ink (Kurozumi means dark charcoal, but sumi is often made from lamp soot) of his soul, to bury his bones than the burial crypt of the Kurozumi at the bottom of the castle on Onigashima? Kanjuro’s one wish since the trauma of his childhood has been to find a place to die, and look at the wording.

This is gonna come back and bite Orochi on the ass (also, def gonna get up a small meta on this. Sorry if it will be repetitive).

Oh, there was also that stuff about Zunesha, Momonosuke, Joy Boy and Oden’s logbook.

Hey so I was wondering, is there a Berkian calendar in A Thing Of Vikings?

I've noticed how later chapters feature the calendars of other faiths/cultures but I notice that any references to a point in history for Berk uses the Christian calendar to denote the year

And I may not be remembering correctly, but I don't think the Berkian characters refer to the years by the Christian calendar

They'll say last year, last season, or 100 years ago, but I don't think they ever say "1040" or "990" etc

I know non-Berkians have said "x year of Christian calendar" when talking to Berkians, but the Berkians themselves? I can't remember them doing so (which might just be my bad memory)

But if the Berkians in your fic were to have a calendar, when would it start? I would assume either A. The founding of Berk (which in the Christian calendar would be the 740s) making the events of the fic occur in the Berkian 300s/4th century, or B. The taming of Dragons is the start of the calendar, meaning we're only 3-ish years in

It's funny that you ask, because this is literally the subject of the first epigraph in Book IV.

And because I'm a cruel tease, I'm going to toss it under the spoiler cut. ;)

Pre-Norse Germanic and Early Norse calendars were highly regional in use, with significant differences in practice and even names for months between different areas, with some using leap days, leap weeks, leap months, pure lunar reckoning with no adjustments for precession, or 12 months of 30 days each, with five or six additional days inserted as needed. Post-Reformation Norse calendars, however, are universally based on the calendar established by the Hooligans of Berk, which was itself restructured eighty years prior to the Reformation by the Jewish teacher Dror ben Ezra. Dror essentially used the Jewish calendar as a direct model, simply renaming the Jewish months for the Norse months, but keeping the general underlying structure of calculations the same, with months beginning with the new crescent phase of the moon.
