By the time the crew touches down on Kor'Sel'Koo on 3/22/24, all of the messages have been sorted and provided and we pick up a new crew member: Mari, a quirky mate who is 4'6" of apparently pure enthusiasm.

The crew doesn't immediately settle down, as there are messages to read and Gilmore Gilrs to figure out.

Muzzain, the far'ly'dae one who ordered all of that Gilmore Girls merchandise, is staying temporarily in Wuunzek, a smallish city about an hour (by underground tunnel train) from Twarvu.

Wuunzek includes a variety of amenities, including Yggld Bars, the Inspired By Earth Waterpark (it's got a lazy river, a waterslide, and a wave pool), an enormous vitamin store aimed at Ly'Daesun called Yonrur, and more.

The process of getting the Gilmore Girls merchandise to the right place now will be... annoying because most of it actually needs to go to Twarvu. While it would normally take an hour and a half, the crew will probably take a full 24 hours to get their surreptiously.

Dylan had been home with the babies and Theo for a few days now, once they'd been discharged bringing the twins into their space had been both terrifying and wonderful. She was also still healing, but she knew she also needed to move around. She still had to be very gentle with her body, but a walk around the mall would do her good. That wasn't so labor intensive, she was pretty sure. It seem rather chaotic around her, but she was going at her own pace, she still looked like she was pregnant, maybe around six months pregnant rather than nine, but she was just glad to be out while the babies slept. Her mom would be coming in next week which would make things even better. She was lost in her own checklist of things when she saw a familiar face. "Hey there, HyunWoo, right? I'm Dylan, Theo's...the twins' mom." Of course she still didn't know how to label herself, but it felt really nice to be referring to herself as Leda and Lysander's mom.

The Runaway

Date: November 2017 and July 2021 Location: Rungung and Different City Characters: Theo Seong and Charles Seong (Robin and Ryder Astrea mentioned) Description: Theo leaves Rungung and goes back again. Triggers: death, grief and mentions of starvation.

November 2017 - Theo is 23 years old

Theo’s gaze shifted from the bus ticket in his hand to the packed bags and guitar in his bedroom, leaving his room the barest it’d ever been. It was now or never. His bus for Different City left tomorrow at seven in the morning, and he still hadn’t told his dad he was leaving. It got more and more tempting to just leave without saying goodbye. That way he wouldn’t have to face his dad’s disappointment. 

A bitter part of him thought his dad might deserve that. All his life, it felt like the damn diner meant more to him than Theo did. He never gave a shit what Theo wanted–never even bothered to ask. He just decided he was going to take over for him one day. Maybe, Theo should’ve told his dad the truth from the start, but it felt like his only real option was to just leave, because he was never going to accept the truth. His dad would have to now though, because Theo was going on that bus even if it broke his heart.

Sighing, Theo forced himself to stop stalling and left his bedroom, heading for the kitchen where his dad was sitting at the table, balancing the books. Without a word, he dropped the ticket directly on top of the book. His dad gave Theo a confused look and set down the pen, lifting the ticket to examine it closely. 

“Different City? You didn’t tell me you’re going on a trip…” He said slowly, and Theo could practically see the gears turning in his head.

“It’s not a trip, dad. I’m moving there. I know I should’ve said something earlier, but–”

“Hold on, son. Slow down. You’re moving there? What are you talking about?” His dad asked in rapid succession, pushing himself out of his seat to look at his son directly. He didn’t seem mad yet, just completely lost. Theo couldn’t blame him. He went about this all wrong.

“I’m twenty-three, I have all my certifications, and I have money saved from the diner. I’m leaving,” Theo listed off in a flat tone. For some reason, it felt like if he kept emotions out of this and just sprouted facts it would avoid the inevitable explosion, but he knew that wasn’t true. He could see it brewing in his father as his expression shifted from confused to betrayed.

“Leaving? What about the diner, Theo? I need you around here to help–to take over one day. This isn’t the plan.”

“Your plan, dad. This isn’t your plan,” Theo snapped, immediately losing all his sense of cool. “I hate the diner. The last thing I want is to spend the rest of my life flipping pancakes and mopping syrup off the floor. That’s your dream, not mine.” 

It was probably the worst thing he could ever say to his father, “I hate the diner,” but it was the truth. Theo held so much resentment for so many years that it festered into an ugly, hateful thing. His dad’s pride and joy felt like a prison to him, and he couldn’t stay here anymore or else he’d go crazy. 

Theo’s dad reeled back like he’d been slapped, his eyes narrowing into a glare. His cheeks started to flush red the angrier he became. He and his dad never fought, and he never saw him lose his temper, but he had a feeling that was about to change in a few seconds. 

“This is–this is ridiculous, Theo. You’re not making any sense. You never said any of this before. What’re you going to do in Different City? You barely passed your certifications,” his dad countered, his voice practically raising with every word.

“When was I supposed to tell you, dad? It’s all you fucking talk about! It’s all you care about. This stupid place is your entire life, and you just force it onto me. You didn’t even ask,” Theo yelled, his chest heaving as he got more worked up, “and I want to play music, by the way. You would’ve known that if you actually paid attention to me.” 

“Music!?” His dad shouted before letting out a humorless laugh. It stung more than Theo expected that he acted like the idea was a big joke, and it caused his shoulders to sink, but he refused to back down. He wasn’t giving up. 

“So, let me see if I understand this, Theo. You’re running away from home, abandoning all your responsibilities and your family, to play music? Do you know how many people actually make it as musicians? Do you know how much being a struggling artist pays? On top of rent, food, basic needs. You’ll starve.” 

Theo faltered for a beat, swallowing roughly around the lump forming in his throat. He knew it was a risk, but he spent so much time planning this out, and it was one he was willing to take. He couldn’t just stay here forever, because he was afraid of failing. 

“I won’t,” he shook his head. “I’m good at this. Someone will sign me. And if they don’t–well, I’d rather be a starving artist than a diner owner.” 

Theo’s father never hit him before, but he looked like he might as he took a step forward like he was squaring up to him, and he braced himself for the potential impact, but it never came. Instead, he pointed a finger in his face, his voice dropping low.

“I’ve never been so disappointed in you in my life, Theo.”

Theo knew it was coming. It was why he waited so long to tell him. It didn’t soften the blow though. His dad was the only close family he had left, and Theo just destroyed that. If Theo left, he didn’t think they’d ever come back from it. As selfish as it was, that was a decision he made a long time ago, and he accepted it. 

“Yeah, well,” he began with a feigned nonchalant shrug. “You don’t have to like it, but it’s happening.” 

Falling silent, he reached around his dad and grabbed his ticket from the table and stalked towards his bedroom to grab his stuff. His bus wasn’t until the morning, but there was no way he was staying here tonight. He’d stay at a friend’s house or find a hotel. His dad called after him, but Theo steadily ignored him as he shrugged on his guitar case and picked up his duffle bag. 

Theo had to push past his dad as he left the bedroom, avoiding his gaze as he walked towards the front door. His dad shouted after him the entire time, until he slammed the door shut and muffled the sound. Theo didn’t pause once as he jogged down the steps, afraid if he did he’d turn back and change his mind. 

July 2021 - Theo is 26 years old 

Theo woke up to the sound of one of his four roommates banging around in the kitchen, prompting him to let out a groan and bury his face in his pillow. He was still hungover from the night before after his band celebrated their gig with many, many shots. They probably spent more on drinks than they were actually paid, but that was pretty typical for them. These bars barely paid anything.

Cracking an eye open, Theo reached for his phone and checked the time, grumbling to himself when he saw it was almost two in the afternoon. His stomach rumbled loudly, but he ignored it for now. All he had left in the pantry was a few packs of instant ramen, and he was trying to make it last. He tried to distract himself from the headache and hunger by scrolling idly through social media, stalking a few old friends and exes. His profile was under a fake name, so he could look into people from his past without being discovered. There was a post that was a few days old from Robin and Ryder’s birthday. He let his gaze linger on Robin for a second too long, murmuring “cute” to himself before he moved on. 

Theo paused when he landed on a post from The Sunrise Diner. Most of their posts were just aesthetically pleasing photos of breakfast food to promote the place, but this was a picture of his dad with a lot of text underneath. It took Theo to realize the words at the top said, “In memory of Charles Seong.” 

His entire body went numb suddenly, all the sound from the apartment drowning out to a dull roar. He read the rest of the post without really processing it. His gaze landed on the words “passed away,” “heart attack,” “will be missed.” Theo didn’t know how long he stared at his phone. It felt like time stopped and his body slowly shut down, everything coming to a complete standstill. 

His dad died. His dad died, and Theo just found out through a social media post. His dad died, and Theo just found out through a social media post, because he ran away from home, changed his number, and never spoke to his dad again. One of the last things Theo ever said to him was that he hated the diner and he’d rather be a starving owner than a diner owner. Which was exactly what he was now. 

Theo’s hands began to tremble so violently that his phone fell and landed with a “thud” on his bare chest. He had no idea what to do. He’d been so stupidly stubborn over the years. No matter how much rejection he faced, how little money he had, and how poor his living conditions were, he refused to go home. He refused to prove his dad right. His dad died being disappointed in Theo.

It all felt so fucking stupid now. 

Without fully processing what he was doing, Theo picked his phone back up and checked his bank balance. He only had enough for a one way bus ticket and nothing else. Taking a deep, trembling breath, he opened the transportation website and hastily paid for an overnight bus ride to Rungung.

Whether he was a failure or not, he had no choice but to go back home. There was nothing for him in Different City, and there hadn't been in a long time. No family, nothing that really meant anything--just a band that wouldn't go anywhere and a shitty apartment. He should've done this years ago, but he let his pride get the best of him, and now it was too late.

Theo's dad was gone, and the only thing he had left of him was that damn diner.

romeo alvara was born as seong jae ( surname, given name ) to a young mother who could not afford to have children and an unknown father, the woman’s only choice was to give her baby boy up for adoption. he was officially adopted by an american family when he was two years old, after having been in the process of adoption approval for the past year, and brought to america not knowing a word of english.

his adoptive parents tried for years and years to have a child of their own, they saw multiple doctors who told them a pregnancy was unlikely but they could still try. they were completely unsuccessful in the long run so it seemed that adoption was their only option. they’d tried in the united states to find a younger child that they just clicked with but were also unsuccessful, they were either too rowdy or misbehaved too much for their liking. so they turned to toddlers and babies, a social worker had suggested they could adopt from out of the country and that was ultimately the route they took. upon first meeting romeo, the two instantly fell in love with him and knew he was their son. the next year was full of paperwork and multiple trips back and forth between oregon and south korea until everything was finalized and they were able to take their baby home.

upon his adoption finalization, he was renamed, given the name romeo. he’d already begun learning korean so his new parents had begun teaching him english as well as hiring someone who knew korean to also teach him his native tongue so he could still maintain a sense of his native culture. for the next year, the three of them spent their time learning and getting to know each other. it was nice to have a family, romeo was quick to start calling his new parents mom and dad. he liked that it was just the three of them. but then a miracle happened, his mom had gotten pregnant. nine months later, she popped out a beautiful baby bay named theodore.

even though he was just three, nearly four, years old when his younger brother was born, his entire life seemed to be upheaved. all of the attention that was once on him was now on his brother and romeo did not like that one bit. instead of playing with him at the park like his parents would do pretty regularly, they’d be seated nearby with the baby giving him tummy time all while romeo was left to his own vices. television time was no longer his once theo grasped the idea of paying attention. instead of watching his big kid shows, his parents put on baby shows like sesame street and barney to keep baby theodore occupied. romeo wasn’t allowed to get a new toy when they went shopping but theo got to keep anything his little hands could hold. it didn’t take long for romeo to grow to resent his brother and it only seemed to get worse as time went on.

romeo felt like he was always competing with his brother for their parents’ attention. any of the major accomplishments that romeo had made never seemed to compare to the minor accomplishments theo had made. because of his hatred for his little brother, romeo absolutely hates talking about theo. they barely talk, not unless it’s about their parents or holiday visits. he changes the subject whenever someone brings his family up, even if it’s just about his parents. sometimes he feels like his parents would have given him up if they could when he was a kid which is an awful thing to think but with how his childhood had gone, romeo can’t help have such thoughts.

okay so he’s not violent but he will threaten to punch your or kick the shit out of you if you annoy him which is honestly totally crazy because he just looks like this cute, soft, cuddly boy who wouldn’t hurt a fly and honestly, that’s basically true. he’s all bark and no bite. violence as his vice is him taking out his anger with punching bags. the only time romeo is a dick is when jealousy is involved, he just+ gets super competitive.

he’s got a thing for small girls because they make him feel taller and more... masculine. mans got some big hands, he loves holding hands, too.

romeo is almost always eating, he absolutely loves food and will say yes to getting food even if it means that he’s paying whenever somebody asks. the best way to his heart is giving him food, props if it was something you made yourself.

EVENT: UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

The Master Gunner of Prosperity, Gwen Volnal, has announced that Arjbo will be the last planet that she travels to as a member of the ship's crew. Despite Gwen's lack of candor, she seems to have no ill will toward the crew, and there is even a going away party being planned in Gwen's honor. Beck has stepped up, in conjunction with the ship's entertainers (Theo and Ian), to plan the event. Samira has also has agreed to foot the bill. Why the ship's doctor is paying for everyone's bar tabs is beyond commonly understood reasons.

Anyway, the venue is called Sprekrek, and it can be best described as a nightclub-restaurant-playzone.

The main, central room includes two dance floors- one on the ground and a larger one on the ceiling. One size of the room has seats and tables on both the ground and the ceiling. Below the large upside down dance floor is a small stage.

Prosperity's own in-house band, Grilled Sandwich Water, will play a set for the party on the stage (under the upside-down dance floor). The venue's management was only too happy for a pretty-good band to play, and will even give the band a little money for being live entertainment. Not a lot of fresh bands come by Arjbo, so this is exciting for everyone.

There are other rooms adjoining to the central room. One is a spherical shaped room that is very smooth and excellent for sliding around on using the features of gravity manipulation. There are lights installed on the smooth room all around. While sliding around, the lights dimly glow in random colors. The sound from the central room is piped in here so that the sound quality is good and fun.

There are a few special party rooms adjoining the central room for private parties and events. Prosperity has rented one, and had the event catered by the in-house restaurant. The specialty entree is a meat chain. Think of chain links. The meat is formed into loops joined to other loops. the intention is rip or bite apart the loop you are going to eat. The meat is made out of a large burrowing arthropod-like creature. I am told that it tastes much like chicken.

There is a cube-shaped bar room also adjoining the central room. The room features three different bars: one on the ground floor, a second on the ceiling, and a third on the vertical wall furthest from the entrance.

Gravity manipulation is what Arjbo is known for, and visitors can rent devices at a reasonable price that allow them to manipulate their personal mass and comfort level. The Personal Gravitational Manipulation Devices (PGMDs) allow users to do stunts like levitate, stand on the ceiling or walls without getting dizzy, and jump really high. Also available for rent are helmets (some more stylish than others), wrist guards, kneepads, padded jackets, soft but sturdy boots, and even elbow pads. It is recommended that visitors who haven't had the chance to practice gravity control by just an intuitive button yet do so in the large sphere room before taking on the dance floor so nobody gets hurt.

hansel, bungee, and nemo ( fcs: jeonghan / svt, hoshi / svt, and elkie / clc ): they run a channel called firefly farm and do stupid things that probably end up hurting them or in danger of hurting them, also other things like generally idiotic behavior with a mix of different personalities. these are the main people of the channel, but there are other interns and editors / people who appear on their channel long term, but they are the original squad. hansel’s basically the dad / mom, bungee’s the impressionable brother, and nemo’s the crazy sister.

yomi ( fc: hani / exid ): she runs a popular custom seamstress shop. also often originally designs the clothes she makes for other people. in her ‘i’ timeline, she does underground work like running a system of escorts under the superiority of monarch mafia. in her ‘ii’ timeline or any other ones where it is not specified, she does not do other work than what included her shop. also?? the ‘yandere’ character thing is very ingrained into her character within ships.

koe and caspian ( fcs: vernon / svt and joshua / svt ): uni kids. koe is a drama and theatre student and literally will ignore his grades for it, but he is often forced to at least care a little. procrastination is basically him. caspian is his best friend and a major in literature. both of them are also instagram models who are connected to brands. caspian is a close friend of jeonghwa’s.

flore ( fc: the8 / svt ): ambiguous god of youth, flowers, and spring. also the symbol of nature and spring. because of his symbolism and concept, along with his effeminate behavior and opinions. everyone calls him the goddess flora, so there is debate on whether he is a god or goddess, which he is a full god.

sangwon and hyori ( fcs: sehun / exo and chaeyoung / twice ): sangwon is the ceo of yoo industries and his sister hyori is his executive assistant / secretary. both have different ways of overworking themselves, and both attempt to stop the other from overworking. they are also connected to monarch mafia as associates.

polaris ( fc: yooa / omgirl ): alien, but her species acts as a placeholder of existence. really curious about earth life and is VERY obviously an alien, but everyone just calls her weird and takes it with a grain of salt. no concept of personal space and very touchy. everything interests her. attends uni majoring in dance and drawing. friends with everyone so she knows everyone, also friends with lilith and admires her hard as fuck. basically a puppy and child and obvious alien in one body.

lance ( fc: taeyang / sf9 ): ceo of his family’s confectionery company and head of the ryu house as well. based very loosely on ciel from kuroshitsuji. thinks he’s better than everyone else, probably is. has a demon maid he’s made a connection with. former rivals and now associates of arson’s company. unidentified underground work.

arson ( fc: hwiyoung / sf9 ): ceo of the family’s toy company and head of the tang house. loosely based on alois, but it is very, very loosely based. also has a demon maid, and he’s very much a spoiled brat who throws tantrums when he doesn’t get what he wants. isn’t afraid to harm other people. unidentified underground work.

jangmi ( fc: seolhyun / aoa ): counselor, specializes in family and relationships, but she covers a broader range of issues. kinda hypocritical because she herself doesn’t know how to maintain her own relationships. has major family issues. major workaholic.

niki and chey ( fc: zhengting / 9 percent ): twins. both are popular on social media for their salon works on their accounts and work accounts ( chey: sweetsinclair, nail artist / niki: soursinclair, makeup artist ). chey is really sweet and into pastel fashion.  she also bakes a lot. niki is kinda an asshole and doesn’t deal with bullshit. he’s also big into cooking and eccentric fashion and conspiracy theories.

nari ( fc: undecided for now?? ): starving artist that works at an art gallery as a janitor. used to have anger issues and has grown to be the softest soft you’ll ever know. pastel goth enthusiast. also volunteers at the local orphanage and does a variety of things there: including helping those with anger issues and helping them volunteer as well.

knox and halls ( fcs: minhyun / nuest and wanna one, jihoon / wanna one ): they run a youtube channel with two other people. knox also is a self-employed photographer, popular through his instagram. halls works as the assistant self defense teacher for self defense classes.

chanri and jaeun ( fcs: kang taeri / ulzzang and seungkwan / svt ): they are a paranormal investigator team that also works to help others get rid of the hauntings that plague them ( they ARE amateur exorcists, but that’s not something they do often so it remains amateur. usually it’s not them doing exorcisms because other people are certified and they only have the barest knowledge, but it has come to the point where they needed it ). chanri is the psychic medium of the duo; jaeun is the tech nerd out of the two. chanri also has a side thing of reading people’s fortunes, etc. does this when they work, too.

scottie ( fc: eunwoo / astro ): witch for hire. also works at yejin’s natural, herbal remedies shop. kind of a grouch. he has an older sister he’s very protective of. also has a huge reach of connections.

rikiya ( fc: kenta / jbj ): shrine familiar. with no connected landgod, he is lonely in the shrine his lady and goddess left once humans had abandoned them. he could be childish and immature, but he could also be manipulative ( and the range spans between minor to MAJOR ).

kairi ( fc: yves / loona ): gym teacher and tennis coach for a private school ( from kindergarten to high school ages ) for kids with behavioral problems. former special forces soldier. keeps that from the people in the school she employs within. the students love her, the staff loves her. she only coaches tennis, but she will substitute coach for other sports.

bomae and gun ( fcs: mj / astro and rocky / astro ): best friends and each other’s right hand man. bomae is doing emergency room nursing and gun works within his grandmother’s/uncle’s restaurant. both, though, as much as their parents hadn’t wanted them to, are quickly on their way to becomes very high-profile individuals within the underground world.

taemin and yumin ( fcs: taeyong / nct and chaeyoung / twice ): a government associated agent ( his organization also dips their hands into their own individual work ). close friends with kairi and also has a recommendation to place her within his team. emotional recluse and very aggressive in his social repellent. yumin is his sister, and they are on tense terms. she is a literature teacher, and she’s REALLY a big book nerd. she and taemin do not speak often. she also knows kairi and speaks to her sometimes. since yumin does not speak to taemin and taemin likes to keep it that way, kairi gives taemin updates on his sister. they are both estranged from other family members additionally.

charlotte and caleb ( fcs: nana / after school and jeonghan / svt ): cousins to taemin and yumin. charlotte is on tense terms with taemin, and caleb is a bit of a ditz and isn’t on tense terms with anyone. charlotte is an uprising direction that focuses on vagueness, beauty, femininity, and monstrosity ( brief desc ). caleb works as a match maker, using specific methods and practices that have helped many people. also has others working as socializers and counselors and customer reference in his building. charlotte and caleb are very close, and they speak often ( because caleb always wants to talk and he’s the ‘baby’ so she lets him ). they have enough of a relationship with their parents to have dinners every 3 months with them.

zen and jei ( fc: yanjun / 9 percent and huang zitao ): both are close friends ( along with bonnie who is in the selective list ). they all came to korea together from america and are always busy with work, whether it’s their model work or any other scheduling they have. zen is the dad, older brother of the 3, and jei is the spoiled brat. jei always tries to get people to buy food for him.

seong and theodore ( fcs: jae / day6 and wonpil / day6 ): both are childhood best friends who moved from america. seong is a trust fund prodigy genius that is working as a certified doctor at the age of 25, now 26. theo’s a church boy that goes to church and reads his bible :( he’s a tattoo artist, and he has a shit ton of tattoes on his arms and body in general. generally restricted to his mid section to chest, front and back, and his arms. he also has very fragile health as his immune system is not well. he stays with seong because his parents don’t trust him to be by himself with his health. and he doesn’t mind since seong IS his best friend. they live in a 4 bedroom house. theo gets looks when he wears his arms out and he isn’t self conscious about it, but there are times where people will comment along the lines of ‘your arms look like that and you're the son of a pastor????’ these comments make him uncomfortable. very strong in his faith.

meiqi, manchu, yuma, jaemin, elliot, and daisy ( fcs: elkie / clc, xiao gui / 9 percent, renjun / nct, mark / nct, mina / gugudan ): fraud squad. forgery. cover ups. faked accidents. general underground work you need done? they got it. manchu’s the boss man, meiqi’s the second hand. they all have a family like connection, but they do keep each other at arm’s length.

bones and hyde ( fcs: jungwoo / nct and lucas / nct ): boss man and right hand man of boss man of monarch mafia, which he stole from his biological father. brothers. they both work in hyde’s restaurant, but they are involved in the crime life. faceless leader of monarch mafia, no one knows what he looks like. hyde is basically his guard dog, and he does a lot of his dirty work.

jane ( fc: ren / nuest ):  member of monarch mafia. unashamed pretty boy with anger issues. don’t make him mad pls!! brute strength of monarch mafia. does a lot with issues that are or could get physical. no patience.

dakota and seongja ( fc: bang yongguk and kaeun / pledis ): tattoo artists and work with theodore. softies. all of them, esp theo. dakota also has a crappy immune system and gets sick easily as well as his health being very fragile at times. seongja is a fallen guardian angel / ‘fallen star’ and she keeps track of her person’s life while trying to curve their misfortune into something good. seongja and dakota are best friends.

taeri and taeun ( fcs: jiu / dreamcatcher ): blind twins. their parents are wealthy, but they never give their daughters much attention. they were raised by their grandparents basically. taeri used to stop other people from bullying taeun and does make rash decisions out of her anger. does a special program that will allow her to work as a teacher to those with disabling visual impairment. workaholic. taeun works as a library aide, and she also reads and teaches braille to the children that come for the lessons. she’s also very sof. they live together, but they constantly have aides visiting them to help.

eunja ( fc: jimin / aoa ): works as an online news author, working through an other website / company as well as her own blog. she travels a lot as well. though, currently she’s working and helping at an orphanage her friend and friend’s mother is bringing back. she balances this and other work. basically a puppy? always hyperactive and has energy to spare. very open about her opinions, but she doesn’t like to dissatisfy other people. also a witch that has an affinity for time and relativity, space and matter, etc.

HISTORY

As a child, Theo had big dreams that would hopefully take him far away from Portvale, where he spent his entire life staring at the same beach, going to the same stores, and talking to the same locals. It wasn’t a terrible town to grow up in, but it was small and stifling. Everyone knew everything about each other and opportunities were limited to owning a small business or working in the tourist industry. Theo wanted more than Port Vale. He wanted to bring the used guitar he spent years saving money for around the world and perform the songs he wrote in the safety of his bedroom. He wanted to experience something new and be known as someone other than the local fisherman’s son, but that wasn’t the life his dad wanted for him.

Their houseboat was almost like his father’s actual first born son. He poured nearly all of his savings into the fixer-upper and redid the entire boat himself, trying his best to create the perfect home for him and his son. To Theo’s father, they were living in his proudest work, and it was obvious from the way he would reverently run his fingers along the walls, constantly tinkering with every seemingly pristine piece until he was satisfied. However, to Theo, it was a suffocatingly small home that only reminded him that if he didn’t take his life into his own hands then he was destined to live in Portvale forever. “This will all be yours one day, Theo,” his father used to tell him, as if another option didn’t exist.

When it came time to apply for college, Theo had his sights set on NYU. He wanted to study music and move to a big city. His dad assumed he would go somewhere local, and to humor him, Theo did apply to community college, but after his dad went to bed, he would stay up late into the night writing his college essay and perfecting his application for NYU. His father didn’t find out the truth until his acceptance letter was delivered.

It was the first time Theo and his father really fought, but it was enough to break their relationship. Theo kept all that resentment and desire for something different buried for so long that it exploded out of him the moment his dad told him he couldn’t go to New York. His dad always assumed he would follow the path he laid out for his son. He assumed Theo was happy in Port Vale. Theo was too afraid of disappointing him to correct him–until he saw his one chance to leave being taken away from him. He didn’t need his father’s approval, he had money set aside for his college tuition and approval for financial aid, so he packed his bags, his guitar, and hopped on a bus to New York City.

At first, it felt like Theo was living his dream. New York City was the polar opposite of Port Vale, and he reveled in the fast-faced, loud, and bustling lifestyle. College gave him the opportunity to meet people from not only all over the country, but all over the world. His classes allowed him to learn more about music than he could ever teach himself. It was everything he could ever hope for, but he had lost his father in the process. They lost contact, and Theo stopped coming home for breaks after he and a group of friends decided to rent a tiny shoebox apartment together.

That idyllic picture of his future crumbled when he was forced into the real world and realized that just because he had a fancy degree and could play guitar and sing didn’t mean he was going to be anything other than a broke college graduate from a tiny town. Record companies didn’t even listen to his demos before tossing them aside, and the closest he ever got to fame was open mic nights at dingy bars or busking on the streets. Still, Theo stubbornly stayed put, refusing to return to Port Vale with his tail between his legs. He would rather be a failure in the city than stuck in that too small town and that too small houseboat.

PRESENT

Four years ago, Theo received the news that his father died of a heart attack, and he suddenly realized how much time he wasted being stubborn. They never repaired their relationship, and Theo would never get the chance to. His dad was just gone, and he was his only family left. The only thing he left behind was his precious houseboat. Maybe it was grief or maybe it was a reality check, but Theo finally left behind his life in New York to return to that coastal town he used to resent so much. It felt like he had to honor his father somehow, and the only way he could imagine making up for those lost years was to take over his houseboat.

His father’s ghost was all over their home, every piece of him ingrained in the wood and décor, and as much as Theo felt like he should preserve it exactly as it was, he thought he could do something more with it. Instead of keeping his father’s legacy to himself, he could share it with the entire town, truly turning the houseboat into something special.

Theo used to bartend in New York and knew a thing or two about cocktails, and Port Vale was seriously lacking in proper nightlife, so he came up with the idea to turn his old home into a bar. Once he had a plan, Theo dedicated himself to his new creative outlet. He decided to lean into the kitschy mermaid theme that Port Vale seemed to love so much and created a place that both tourists and locals could enjoy. It wasn’t the music career he always dreamed of, but it was almost better. The Houseboat felt safe. The Houseboat was home. The Houseboat was his father personified.

PERSONALITY

Theo isn’t the easiest person to get along with. He’s notoriously stubborn and reserved. He never learned to express himself outside of music, saving his feelings for his lyrics. After facing so much rejection, he’s tired and jaded, and relies on sarcasm for most conversations. He also carries a lot of guilt about his father’s death. He’s trying to make up for it with The Houseboat, but nothing can erase the fact that he didn’t speak to his father for years before his death. He was never a particularly cheerful child growing up in Port Vale, but now he carries an obvious sadness that makes him quiet and a little unapproachable. The only thing that seems to bring a spark to his eyes is channeling his creativity into the bar.

CONNECTIONS

OBSIDIAN: in your eyes, they are just another person like you; an unlucky type of guy, one who hit the dirt to make a name from himself in town. sometimes you forget he wasn’t always here, him and his tattoo shop. like you, he faced struggles to open up business, with pushback from the locals… but like you, he’s found success. you admire that with him, but don’t understand why your attempts to befriend him have gone awry.

BERYL: they are intense; but isn’t everyone, when they first enter your bar? that’s what you offer, a rest for the wary and conversation for the lonesome. for them, neither of those seem to do the trick. laser focus and crushing expectations are their whole thing, so you slid a drink in front of them and ask those small questions about their day, hoping to unravel the tension between their shoulders blades and the determined gaze, the set of their jaw. you’re not usually part of the community welcome wagon, but you’ve been making exceptions lately, with all the new faces in town who wind up seated at your counter.

BRASS: you are very much intrigued; perhaps, even, a bit taken by them. cunning and convincing at once; you envy that. charm has only gotten you so far, and you see their air of confidence and wonder if it’ll get them to where they need to be - you are pleased each time they enter your bar, and perhaps may be a bit too obvious in your attention you give them.
