Review : Glass (2019)
Tumblr media
There have been scores of memorable and controversial directors over the past 20 years or so, but few have been as polarizing or as hard to pin down as M. Night Shyamalan.  After blowing minds right out of the gate with The Sixth Sense, his career has been full of highs, lows, celebration and confusion.  It seems that he can make movies deemed modern day masterpieces, and follow them with incredibly self-indulgent projects that lack widespread appeal and connection.  That’s what makes Glass such an intriguing proposition, as many people did not realize he was building a trilogy when he first released Unbreakable.  But, here we are, almost 20 years later, so bravo to Shyamalan for puling off perhaps the biggest twist of all.
The Horde (James McAvoy) is holding four cheerleaders captive in an abandoned brick factory in Philadelphia.  David Dunn (Bruce Willis), a secret vigilante nicknamed The Overseer (among other things), spends his days running Dunn Security with his son Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark) when he is not out in the streets searching for The Horde and other wrongdoers.  By a stroke of luck, Dunn happens upon The Horde in one of his many personalities, and when he bumps into him, he is shown a vision of the captive cheerleaders.  Dunn attempts to save them, and in the process, he and The Horde are taken into custody by Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) and committed to Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Hospital.  As the news of the capture spreads, Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy), a former victim of The Horde, catches wind, and in hopes of helping to rehabilitate and free Kevin Wendell Crumb (the root personality of The Horde), she visits Raven Hill and Dr. Staple.  Meanwhile, David Dunn is surprised to learn that not only is The Horde kept in minimal security right across the hall from him, but former nemesis Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) is committed to Raven Hill as well.  As Dr. Staple attempts to do research on the trio in hopes to dispel their ‘delusions of grandure’ as superheroes, Joseph Dunn, Casey Cooke and Mrs. Price (Charlayne Woodard), the mother of Mr. Glass, attempt to offer help and intervene, but as tensions begin to mount, the trio of patients and their conflicts come to a head, putting their truths and the safety of the city in jeopardy.
There really is something truly impressive about how M. Night Shyamalan has been able to have this trilogy in mind since the days of Unbreakable without that getting spoiled or becoming a shortsighted project that could not see its true scope.  It seems that Shyamalan had so much foresight in regards to this project that he was not only able to re-integrate footage from both Unbreakable and Split into the film, but it seems he even shot additional footage way back then for use in Glass modern day.  Elements of the lore introduced in Unbreakable were explored (unkowingly) in Split, but in Glass, the lore has been fully embraced and expanded upon, with new elements brought to the table.  Originally introduced ideas that seemed merely expositional in the past films become major turning points in terms of explaining how the trio of characters arrived to the point at which we find them in Glass.
With this film focusing specifically on Mr. Glass and his mental prowess, it becomes the perfect chance to implement the old narrative idea of reality examined (and exposed) through ‘the looking glass’.  The two main antagonists, Mr. Glass and Dr. Staple, both take major actions that appear to have clear intentions, but it is only after all has played out and a step back is taking that the true intentions of these actions are revealed.  The true mastery of the film is the way that the previous two spent so much time setting well-defined rules, traits and information to paint characters clearly as heroes and villains, only to go and fully blur the lines of what constitutes (and differentiates) heroes and villains in the final act.  Even Dr. Staple, whom comes on the scene to provide ‘help’ despite a clear feeling that she does not have good intentions, still has plenty of room for surprises as we learn more about her, her motivations, and her support system.
Shyamalan continues with his pattern of comic-book style framing and inverted shots for Glass, helping to keep the visual and emotional feel of the trilogy consistent.  Skewed perspectives (usually meant to symbolize the mind-states of characters like Mr. Glass or The Horde) are juxtaposed against traditional center framing in many of the shot-reverse shot setups, with much of The Horde’s transitions being presented by a handheld camera that seems to spin from character to character.  The design of Raven Hill Memorial is perfect, with the interior blasting color and technology at us, while the exterior seems to fit right in with the world around it.  Some of the incidental characters, especially the orderlies in the hospital, wholly embrace their smaller moments, bringing levity to tense moments.
James McAvoy turns of the acting chops to eleven, totally relishing in the range, diversity and epic nature of his character shifts, not only in terms of personality traits, but in terms of being able to provide moments of humor, intimidation, deception and fear.  Bruce Willis balances a thin line between the reluctant hero and the man with a calling... he still seems to have to convince himself to take certain actions, but his commitment is whole-hearted once the actions begin.  Samuel L. Jackson embraces his return to Mr. Glass, lulling us in with his sedated looks and muscle twitches before unveiling the true depths of both his sinister nature and acceptance of his higher calling.  Sarah Paulson becomes the center force in the triangular power battle, bringing in the weight of the eventual revelation provided from her opening moments of her performance.  Anya Taylor-Joy plays her role much more subdued, which makes sense considering she is not a victim in this movie, and her genuine heart plays well against the disjointed nature of The Whorde.  Spencer Treat Clark turns his performance in Unbreakable into a key character in Glass, bringing in the elements of wonder he originally showed, and turning that into an acceptance and apprenticeship that allows David Dunn to try and function at his full capability.  Charlayne Woodard, Adam David Thompson and Luke Kirby also turn in memorable performances.
There have been times where I thought I’d given up on Shyamalan, but after seeing Glass, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by what he has in store for us next.  His career continues to be one of the most unique ever, and I do not see that changing any time soon.

Real villains are among us. Real heroes are within us. Three weeks after the events in Split, David Dunn - now dubbed The Overseer for his vigilante activity, locates Kevin. After saving another group of girls from him, they’re both apprehended and sent to the same institution Mr. Glass is being held in. Once Glass learns they’re all in the same place he puts a plan into motion. The references to Split (and a lesser degree Unbreakable) were nicely done, and the reveal of Mr. Glass’ connection to it all - holy crap - nice job. *slow clap* - we get a sense of it large scale in Unbreakable, and on a smaller more individual level from Split. The set up at the hospital for each patient (of the three we see) was interesting, the water for David, the really sparten room for Glass, and the lights for Kevin (seeing McAvoy go through all those personalities in such quick succession - OMG HOW?!) The last lines Joseph collected from The Overseer footage - hahaaaa... and seeing Mr. Glass rolling around putting things in place for the end - i mean, that ending, smh. The fights between David and The Beast - omg. The Beast crawling all over the walls - *shudders* but the comic explanation/history 👌🏼👌🏼 Will there be more of these Shyamalan super hero movies now that his origin story trilogy is done? #ssmovieof2019 #drama #scifi #thriller #JamesMcAvoy #BruceWillis #SamuelLJackson #AnyaTaylorJoy #SarahPaulson #SpencerTreatClark #CharlayneWoodard #LukeKirby #AdamDavidThompson (their ends, omg) #RosemaryHoward #BryanMcElroy #comics #originstory #trilogy #triptych #shyamalan written and directed by #MNightShyamalan movie of 2019 number 4) #Glass https://www.instagram.com/p/BtFuH2Cn-CB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1kol7ebow3lw9

Some good news for fans of M. Night Shyamalan‘s 2000 cult comic book-inspired film Unbreakable and his more recent breakout hit Split: the next film in the sequence, Glass, is now filming in Philly! While there are certainly cinematic secrets and plenty of twists ahead, Shyamalanhas been rather vocal during his pre-production run-up to the new, highly anticipated film. We know that production…

‘Unbreakable’ Actors to Reprise Their Roles for ‘Glass’!!
‘Unbreakable’ Actors to Reprise Their Roles for ‘Glass’!! #SpencerTreatClark, #CharlayneWoodard, #SarahPaulson, #AnyaTaylorJoy, #BruceWillis, #Glass, #JamesMcAvoy, #SamuelLJackson, #Split, #Unbreakable
Leave it to M. Night Shyamalan to build an expanded universe out of a twist ending. He kept fans in the dark that Split was a backdoor sequel to his 2000 film Unbreakable, and now he’ll be tying the two films together with Glass, a title that references Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Elijah Price, aka “Mr. Glass”. Now it looks like a couple more Unbreakableactors will be signing onto the…
