Lots happening in the Pond Discord this weekend!

This weekend, both @heavenssexiestangel and @thoughtslikeaminefield are going to be spending time in the discord server! Manta Ray Dean will be hanging out on Saturday just chatting with folks, then hosting competitive writing sprints on Sunday with Admin MJ! (Dean will start off the sprints, then MJ will take over, and they might team up later!)

How do sprints work?

The exact number of sprints and length of each sprint will be decided by the host and participants. Be prepared to work on a WIP of your own, but the host has the option of offering a prompt.

At the end of the sprints, whoever wrote the most words in one sprint will get a prize. Whoever wrote the most words in all of the sprints together will also get a prize. More prizes may be given out on the day depending on how things go. If the host brings prompts, there may be opportunities to win more prizes for most creative, funniest, etc. Be prepared to be asked to share your work! You don’t have to if you don’t want to! (Prizes will be chosen from the Pond Prize Pool.)

In your big centerpiece scene in Man From U.N.C.L.E., you get to dance with Armie Hammer and then slap him. I heard the slap was a suggestion from Guy Ritchie, and that it surprised Armie. What did you think when he gave you that note? He wouldn’t have let me not do it! With Guy, if someone has an idea, we’ll try it, and if it doesn’t work then it doesn’t work. But it’s funny, because we recently did Good Morning America, and Guy said, “I love a good slap!” I remember that in one of our absolute first rehearsals, it was me and Armie and the writer, Lionel, over at Guy’s house. Guy had some sides but he put them away, and he said, “You know what it says on those sides. Let’s just try something else.” And he pulled out a chess set, the whiskey and vodka was poured, and the slap kind of came through that. It did end up being quite funny, giving Armie a slap. I mean, he’s almost double my length, Mr. Hammer.

Smol and terrifying

I don't know if it's something about my generation, but I have a lot of trouble joining new Discord servers, particularly if they only have a handful of people -- no matter how interested I am in the subjectmatter.

It's one reason I still live my entire life on Facebook for the most part, or blogs, but Discord is another beast entirely. Just walking through the door, it's like all eyes are on you as most servers happily announce your arrival (ugh I hate it). Then you have to wonder, particularly when you're in a niche environment: How many of these people could I already know? Are my haters already here? What are the expectations, as a new person, in growing this environment? Am I talking too much? Too little? Too weird? That last one is a big thing for me, because I am by definition, weird AF. And I own that.

I don't know if the generations younger than I are simply better suited to walking into rooms full of rando strangers and being fine with that, but it's never been my strong suit, perhaps less based on my birth year and more based on the fact that I am autistic, that I have Borderline Personality Disorder, or that I am utterly and hopelessly an introvert -- at least, until you show even a smidge of shared interest, after which I will info-dump a thousand pounds of knowledge. Immediately. Like right away.

Like right now.

I'm OK to join 'large' Discord servers where there are a plethora of members and I can sort of sneak in the back without really being noticed, take stock of how the server works, what the vibe is, and then, if I'm ready, I can contribute.

But smol servers terrify me.

Yet I want to be there.

But I can't.

Perhaps admitting it is the first step.
