Frequently Asked Questions
This post answers the following questions:
Who are the Catalans? Where are you?
Which are the Catalan Countries? (each Catalan country)
Where can I learn the Catalan language? (free online resources and where to find classes)
What social media accounts can I follow that post in Catalan?
If your question isn't answered here, you're more than welcome to send me an ask!
1. Who are the Catalans? Where are they?
Catalan people are a cultural group who come from the area known as the Catalan Countries. We speak the Catalan language (a language that descends from Latin) and have a distinct culture (cuisine, traditions, holidays, dances, music, literature, etc) and history since the Middle Ages.
Our nation is the Catalan Countries, located in the coast of the Mediterranean sea, in South-Western Europe.
Tumblr media
As a result of past wars and invasions, most of the Catalan Countries are under Spanish rule and a part of it is under French rule (+1 city in Italy). In fact, Spain and France have harshly persecuted, illegalized and tried to exterminate the Catalan language and culture for a long time, well into the 20th century. But Catalan people have survived the ethnocide and we still exist, even though we continue to face discrimination and there are some settings where it's still not legal to speak Catalan (for example, public schools in the French-controlled part, or European Union ambits, among some others).
There is also Catalan diaspora around the world.
We are not a closed culture, we are very open to foreigners learning our language and culture, and the Catalan diaspora often organizes celebrations for our holidays or groups to do traditional activities (most famously the castellers, aka human towers) that everyone can join.
2. Which are the Catalan Countries?
We say the Catalan Countries in plural because it's made of different areas for historical reasons. The Catalan Countries are all the areas where Catalan is the native language, which have historically been part of a whole, and which share a common culture (with local variants, of course). Here they are:
Tumblr media
From North to South:
Northern Catalonia. Capital city: Perpinyà. It's under French administration (part of the region Occitanie in the new French regions system, used to be Languedoc-Roussillon in the old one).
Andorra. Capital city: Andorra la Vella. It's an independent microstate.
Catalonia. Capital city: Barcelona. It's under Spanish administration (it's the Catalonia region in the Spanish regions system).
Eastern Strip, also called Aragon Strip. It's under Spanish administration (it's part of the region of Aragon in the Spanish regions system).
Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa (in English also known as Ibiza) and Formentera. Capital city: Palma. Under Spanish administration (Balearics region in the Spanish regions system).
Valencian Country. Capital city: València. Under Spanish administration (called Valencian Community in the Spanish regions system).
El Carxe. Tiny rural area. Under Spanish administration (part of the Region of Murcia in the Spanish regions system).
L'Alguer. One city in the island of Sardinia. Under Italian administration (part of the region of Sardinia in the Italian regions system).
3. Where can I learn the Catalan language?
We are thrilled that you want to learn our language. Catalan people love it when others learn our language. Here I'll link you to classes and free online resources.
If you want face-to-face classes outside of the Catalan Countries, you can check this website to find if there's a university that offers Catalan classes near you. There are 101 around Europe, 25 in North America and Cuba, 5 in Asia, and 4 in South America. Students from these courses can also participate in language stays and internships in the Catalan Countries.
If you're already in the Catalan Countries, you will easily find courses for foreigners which the government offers for free or for a cheap price (depending on the level and each person's economic situation). Check out your local CPNL (Consorci per la Normalització Lingüística).
If you want to learn independently on the internet, there are two resources I recommend the most, both are available online for free.
One is the book "Life in Catalonia. Learn Catalan from..." that you can find in various languages. Here I add the link to the official government page where you can legally download the PDFs for free, you only have to scroll down and click under where it says "text complet". You can find the book Learn Catalan from English, from Spanish, from Arabic, from Tamazight, from French, from Hindi, from Urdu, from Punjabi, from Romanian, from Russian, and from Chinese.
The other resource I recommend the most is the online course Parla.cat. It has different levels for beginners or advanced learners. You have to create an account (it asks for an official document number, don't worry about it, it's not a sketchy site, it's because it's an official course paid by the government of Catalonia and if you immigrated to Catalonia having taken this course would officially count as a language course and can give you some benefits). You can either use it for free (all the learning material is available in the free version) or you can use the paying version. In the paid version, you will get assigned a language teacher from Catalonia who can help you and correct you.
There are many more resources. You can find more free resources in this post, this post, or in this link.
Here you have some recommendations to start practising. And remember that you can watch Catalonia's public TV streaming service 3Cat for free from anywhere in the world!
4. I want to follow social media accounts that post in Catalan. Can you tell me some?
Of course! According to the WWW Consortium, Catalan is the 35th most used language on the Internet, out of the more than 7,000 languages in the world.
Here's some lists with recommendations by topic:
Anime and manga
Cooking
Travel accounts
Videogames
Fashion and lifestyle
More lists will be coming soon
If your question wasn't answered, you can send me a question clicking here. 🙂 You can also browse this blog by topics here.

I know we live a very weird life, but we decided if we don’t get pregnant by the holidays, we are taking Sky to India to meet Amma (the hugging saint, ended up at her ashram by accident in 2018 and it changed our lives). Her little city (Amritapuri) where she was born is beautiful, safe, and super cheap to stay. Southern India is a real dream. Sky would get to play with a lot of kids and I think she would absolutely adore it. After about 1 month there, we would go spend 1 month in New Zealand and 1 month in Australia.
I either get a baby for Christmas and an apartment in Miami or I book another epic family trip. Kevin says that we shouldn’t go back to Barcelona for another vacation before we move there, we know we want to move there. He said let’s go on another epic new trip instead, and it didn’t take long for me to agree to that idea. So - either way, I’m excited :) When I stay with my in laws for the summer I will picture this trip when I feel like I’m about to go insane 😂
Kevin and I have talked about it at length and decided that it will be Sky’s decision when she turns 5 years old to either enroll into a traditional school or to continue “world school” as we have pretty much been doing for the last 6 months.
We want to buy a property of some kind in the next year either way, but that doesn’t mean we want to stay there. We could rent it out full time to live who knows where. I’m envisioning a The Bucket List family type lifestyle (except on a much humbler scale 😂😂😂).
Those kids seem well adjusted 🤷🏽‍♀️
I’ve just got this very niche golden ticket in life where no, I don’t make a lot of money, but we make enough to live a really cool nomadic life. We were very close to the ideal: having a 100% paid off property on the coast of FL to rent out BUT our contract required 2 years of residency and let’s just say we learned real quick that we absolutely did want want our life savings under the control of our HOA. So we sold with some profit and now we’re kinda back to square one on the real estate portfolio. It was a setback and it wasn’t, the gulf coast condo. We definitely learned a lot. I’m excited to keep growing our business and our earnings so we can buy something else in Miami / NY / Spain in the next 1-2 years. ✨

Im back! Took a small break!
Took a bit of a break because my mum made us go to Barcelona which is great- don't get me wrong I know not everyone gets to go fly to places like Barcelona(or anywhere at all for the holidays) but I think I've gained at least 5lb in a week.
I feel like I'm exaggerating but school starts next week so I'm stressed, my mum makes us go to restaurants every day and is always overordering, we have a lot of food stocked up in our room and I have drunk so much fucking boba I will dive into a volcano istg 😭
Also!! I have gotten a HUGE wake-up call today! I went to random alternative shops because- hey! I'm in a big city and Scotland has like zero good places to get non-basic clothing >:| And I went to small places I found on Google as well as a huge Urban Outfitters!
OK, first location: Urban Outfitters
I enter and I already know to expect high prices so I first go to the sale isle, but obviously, everything was either too small or had open shoulders(my skin is fugly so until I lose weight or get a lightweight cardigan- those are a NO😭💔). So I went around and OMFG I felt SO INSECURE, there were so many skinny girls with attitudes🙃 and 'omg! Shocker!' A huge alt-fashion brand has no large sizes surprise surprise|:/ it was a disaster, especially adding the fact that my mum splurged most of our money on food- still encouraging me to go to a place she knew wasn't cheap and then getting upset when I questioned her abt it when she said I can't buy anything :) she knows there is shit I want to buy from there and I think she legitimately just wants to see me get sad sometimes.
Second location: Place I Forgot the Name Of
Entered immediately- you could tell everything was a bit overpriced but it was whatever because I warned my mother beforehand so she couldn't complain :) I found a hoodie! It was striped and it did have a bit of an ugly zipper but It's fine personally, it fits but it's basically saran wrapped around my body and my stomach is so fucking visible(I died inside when I looked in the mirror)but I had heatstroke confidence when I bought it so.....
Third location: Madame Chocolat (I think)
All of the outfits were really pretty, more of a cutesy-Sanrio-lolita kind of place but I liked it nonetheless, my only issue was that I looked ugly in whatever there was and my mum being the bitch that she is kept on going: 'Oh but will you really wear that?'. She claims she says that because I never wear half the things I buy but the reason don't wear half the things I buy is because she makes fun of me and giggles when she looks at me :(
Also due to the weather I sweat like a pig.

12/5/2024 Another week has passed and with it my granddaughters 6th birthday. The date today is also another memorable one for me as on this date, 40+ years ago, I started working in the job which now pays me a pension 😀.
Looking back through my photos, I remembered my day out in Paris, with Pauline, way back in 2022. We went to see an exhibition at the “institut du monde arabe” being keen on architecture and a lot of Arabic stuff too, it was wonderful to see this beautiful building. We had a lovely day, as at the time Pauline was living in Paris and so was my guide for the day. It was the 27th February and we sat outside “The Panthéon” in the sunshine. What a year of holidays that was! Apart from the day in Paris, I went to stay in Mulhouse for three nights, from there I visited my Turkish friends in Strasbourg, visited the “Cite du train” in Mulhouse and the following day visited “Musee de l’Impression sur etoffes” (Textile Museum) in Mulhouse. In May I had a trip to London and visited so much I needed a holiday to get over that one. Then in August/September I was in the UK again visiting my family. Unfortunately that was the last time I was there, as my trip last year was cancelled due to being in hospital. Reading all that I did, I really wondered how I managed it!
I think I have mentioned before about how not just the lyrics but the music speak to me on records that I love. This week, it’s a virtuoso guitarist, Gary Moore, and the first song is “Still Got The Blues For You” which is from April 1990.
The second song is really Gary Moore’s signature song, it’s from 1978 and it’s “Parisienne Walkways” either sung by Gary Moore or Thin Lizzy I just love this song and I think it fits in well with my current abode.
Pauline paid me a visit yesterday which was lovely. She stayed just short of three hours by which time I was really bushed. She is flying to Italy tomorrow to stay with a friend before returning to Barcelona to start a new job on the 21st of the month.
Thursday was the day of the 32nd fete des plantes at Bergères, a small village that comes alive once a year with stall holders plants, fabricated items for the garden and the chance to rub shoulders with the Mayor of Bar-sur-Aube and sometimes the Mayor of Troyes. This year Mme Marine Le Pen paid a visit, with her bodyguards. I saw photos from the local paper but everyone I spoke to who had been there seemed to have missed her!
My knitting group friends attended the “Champagne Party” at Urville, they had tables selling knitted, sewn, crocheted items, woodworked items and the stained glass items always take up more of the stall than anyone else! The market was over two days, I don’t think they will have sold much, they hadn’t on Friday!
For those in the know, the market was not in the famous Drappier Champagne House but in another champagne house in the village.
“The Photographer” was out photographing the aurora borealis on Friday evenng. Then had to be up early to take his son to a birthday party at a farm, while his sister had her birthday party with friends. It has been great to see my grandson climbing on hay bales. We even had a video call while he was there.
“The Trainee Solicitor” had a good four days at work. He is on the lookout for a cheap car as he starts his Uni course at the end of May and needs “wheels”. He had a good day yesterday, doing some relaxing.
“The Reconnect Navigator” was bushed with her 4 day week but had a lovely time visiting her family, watching football and just generally catching up.
“The Jetsetter” arrived in Vancouver not feeling great, she thinks she picked something up on the plane. However, it didn’t stop her popping over to Vancouver Island and down to Seattle (as you do). I am sure she will be having a fantastic time and more of her adventures will be discovered.
So as I am stuck in this hospital for not quite sure how much longer, it has been nice to share with you again what has been happening in the wider world.
I will be sticking my nose into another Ian Rankin “Rebus” book finding myself in “Auld Reekie” again.
Have a good week until next week.
The Pantheon in Paris.

Parts of Europe are currently baking in temperatures over 40° C/104° F. Despite this, travelers on the continent currently are able fly much more cheaply than go by rail – a far more climate-friendly option.
Europe’s cheap flights and pricey train tickets promote dirty forms of transport, campaigners say, with “outrageous” tax breaks encouraging people to heat the planet as they head on holiday. Train tickets are double the price of flights for the same routes, on average, according to an analysis from Greenpeace published on Thursday. The campaigners compared tickets on 112 routes on nine different days. To get from London to Barcelona, they found, the cost of taking the train is up to 30 times the cost of jumping on a plane. Holiday destinations across Europe this week have been baking in deadly heat made hotter by greenhouse gases released from burning fossil fuels. “€10 airline tickets are only possible because others, like workers and taxpayers, pay the true cost,” said Lorelei Limousin, a climate campaigner at Greenpeace. “For the planet and people’s sake, politicians must act to turn this situation around and make taking the train the more affordable option.” Flying is one of the most polluting activities a person can do and also one of the hardest to clean up. Unlike eating a burger or driving a car – which have cleaner alternatives such as plant-based meats and electric vehicles – there is no way to fly without changing the climate. Experts have criticised schemes claiming to offset emissions from flying as flawed.
Europe has a decent rail transport network, so it's not like the air travel is all that necessary to get around.
Air travel is subsided far more than rail travel with public money. Airports and other air related infrastructure eat up a lot of funds which could go into making railways more efficient.
In Europe, airlines pay no taxes on kerosene and little tax on tickets or VAT. Their emissions are only priced for flights within Europe – at a level below the social cost of carbon. A study published earlier this month by Transport and Environment, a green campaign group, found European governments lost out on €34.2bn from poor taxation on aviation in 2022. The “tax gap” is set to rise to €47.1bn in 2025, the report found. “In short: if you fly, you are subsidised; if you take the train, you are punished by higher prices – as well as the fact that the journey is often longer,” said (Linnaeus University Prof. Stefan) Gössling.
If anything, the situation is worse in the United States where passenger rail travel has been taking it on the chin since the 1940s. Video producer Dean Peterson reports on a three-day rail trip he took from Los Angeles to New York in which he describes how passenger rail routes declined over the past century. Though with the recent Infrastructure bill encouraged by a pro-rail Joe Biden, Amtrak is planning major expansion — provided that climate-denying Republicans don't get a chance to derail it.
Improvements in passenger rail service and rail infrastructure are a necessary part of addressing climate issues.

Camprodon to L’Escala
A leisurely start as we packed Tessi up for the trip home. A final coffee at the bar and then we were on the road.
We ventured off to see Castellfollit de la Roca. It’s an amazing looking place and we suspect we skirted it and may even have lunched near where we parked, on our Hannibal ride. Anyway we went for a wander to the end of the town and then parked for some photos on the way out.
Very soon we were back in L’Escala where Jose dropped me and all our luggage before heading off to park Tessi in her holiday home 😉 Unfortunately he had quite a stiff 3/4 head wind for the ride home.
Again we got to see the last 40km of the Tour and another exciting stage it was. Then we decided to head to the beach for a swim as it’s been quite warm today. Post swim we stopped at what we thought was a new anchovy bar, though Martijn later informed us opened pretty much as Covid hit. Any who it’s a nice bar very close to home and will probably become somewhere we frequently visit.
After our drink we grabbed a few groceries and then headed home where to our horror we realised I had grabbed the Tessi keys not our apartment keys 😖
After a minor melt down we regrouped and rang our property manager who was overnighting in Barcelona 😞. Jose then found us a cheap and not so cheerful hotel room for the night. We and our groceries checked in and then we took the opportunity to go to the Chinese restaurant in L’Escala we had always talked about going to. The food was way better than we had expected and frankly probably trumped most Chinese restaurants we’ve been to in Oz.
After dinner we went for a stroll and ended up at our main beach in the old town, somewhere we tend to avoid once the tourists arrive. It was really nice to see it buzzing and enjoy the beautiful sunset over a glass of wine 😍 Finally we had to retire to our hotel room. First world problem, once upon a time we would have been sleeping on the beach.

i need a hc of sobbe organizing their first holiday together abroad in the summer 🥺🥺 (lets pretend corona doesn’t exist obvs lol)
They're going to Barcelona 🌴 Robbe is super hyped about the heat, Sander is super hyped about museums (and Robbe in his skimpy swimming suit toasting his hot bod on the sand 😏)
Their vacay are going to be on the budget because they don't exactly have a lot of money, and what they have they want to spend on museums, ice creams, eating out and train tickets to nearby towns so they find some cheap airbnb that's basically a shoebox.
Robbe has always wanted to go to Barcelona so when he found out Sander went there 2 years ago he was kinda disappointed, but then Sander smirked cheekily at him and said that he'd love to play a guide for him for some small sexual favors hehe (earning a smack in his arm). No but for real tho, Sander loved the city so he'll gladly visit it again, especially knowing how much Robbe wants to go. It's not like it's a hardship for him, the city is beautiful and it's hot and there's so much to do anyway + he loves to make his baby happy 😌
They spend a week there, Robbe getting new freckles everyday and being whiny about it, but Sander just shuts him up with kisses and licks them all reveling in a gasp after gasp. They take a million photos, most of them dorky and paparazzi style of each other. They walk so much everyday Sander complains his legs are gonna fall off, but he just complains for the sake of complaining, because in reality everything is so great he's happiest he's ever been and he has nothing to complain about. Robbe sees right through him, but delivers his magical massages every evening that never fail to end with a happy ending.
Sander draws lots of Robbe, as always, looking like a Greek god in the water, climbing Montserrat, and frying his butt at the beach, water drops all over his skin.
Needless to say, their first vacation together is five stars on booking.com ✨
