"He's been in here for, like, 2 hours."

"He could be working on an assignment," Answers Lu Guang as he hands you a mug absentmindedly. You snatch it from his grasp and sigh, wiping it down with the rag you hold. "But he's been on his phone."

"Why are you bugged, anyway? It's not like you," Your co worker wipes his palms against his apron, leaning against the counter. "I'm not bugged," You argue, cheeks hot. "I just... he's strangely but insanely attractive and I maybe, possibly, perhaaaps... would like to ask for his number."

The deadpan Lu Guang wears earns him a firm smack to the shoulder and a rushed, quiet whisper for him to shut up despite him not saying anything. He scrunches his nose up, stealing a not-so-subtle glance at the raven-haired boy across the cafe. You curse him out again, though it's not like the charming boy would notice with how focused he seems as he types on his phone with frantic (maybe a little shaky) fingers.

QL: ohmygod how long will you be pretending to text me

QL: just grow a pair and ask them smh

CXS: whar???

CXS: hell no have you SEEN them???

QL: no because you refused to show me a picture of them

CXS: i'd be charked by them then i'd slip up then boom. caught.

CXS: *charmed

CXS: you must be ctazy to thnik that i'd risk beign caught and ruinign my chances with them

Xiaoshi can't bring it in himself to notice his typos because his chest beats so violently he feels like he's about to throw up. He can hear you cursing at something faintly and though it isn't clear or flattering, the boy feels slightly enamoured. Just slightly. He hasn't felt this nervous since his middle school talent show where he (thought he) pulled the best move ever invented.

After being ghosted by Qiao Ling— nothing new— Xiaoshi groans and lets his cheek mush against the skin of his palm as he slaps his face with a hopeless groan. It's when he looks out the window in hopes of calming his mind when he notices- it's pouring.

How deep in thought had he been to not notice? He feels stupid now.

Xiaoshi takes a moment to look around the cafe-- there are a few patrons sat in different seats, some in pairs and most not; the white-haired employee wipes down a table with a fresh cloth, eyes half-lidded as he watches the downpour outside; the coffee machine whirrs, though there's no one to attend to it at the moment.

You've disappeared.

Puzzled, he takes another sip of the caramel macchiato you'd made for him— call him biased, but he believes it's the best he's ever had— and takes another look around, hoping to spot you.

Though to no avail, he assumes you’re taking a much deserved break in the back.

“Hi,”

Xiaoshi jumps a little, shoulders rising. “Oh! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, um, startle you.” You apologize with a sheepish smile. You stand in front of him, a little to his right, pressing a tray against the material of the apron you wear. “I just- are you done? With-with that?”

Curses. You and your nervous stammering. You’re insanely embarrassed right now, fingers picking on a loose strand of your jeans.

“Oh! Um, yeah, thanks.” Answers Xiaoshi, drawing attention back to his ‘thesis’ that displays on his laptop. It’s been half-finished for two hours. With a bouncing knee, he watches as you carefully pick up the menu and the plate his strawberry macarons had been displayed on, tucking the tray and menu under you arm and bringing the plate with one hand,

You take a step, something in Xiaoshi jumps. He doesn’t want you to go yet. This is a poor excuse of an interaction to go home to. His lips part a little, but his throat goes dry. You take another step, though this one feels hesitant. He wets his lips with his tongue.

"It’s po-"

"How was yo-"

You both stop, skin burning. The moment settles in the air that sits between the two of you as you both look at each other as caught off guard as the other. “I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to cut you off.” Says Xiaoshi with a little nervous chuckle. He gestures for you to go on with a shrug and a charming smile.

“I just wanted to ask if you, um, liked the coffee. And macarons.”

“They both tasted like heaven,” He answers almost immediately. The answer was easy, he thinks. It’s the truth. “Though, those macarons were pretty hefty.”

A small playful, slightly bewildered scoff bubbles from your throat, “Well, they were pretty hard to make.”

“So you made them too? No wonder they were good.”

Your fingers clench around the plate you hold as you struggle to resist a smile. Tilting your head a bit, you shrug, “I had a little help. From Jack Frost over there,” You motion towards your co-worker’s direction, who watches you two not-so-subtly as he wipes down the cashier counter. “Though he’s a little clumsy at times.”

“Jack Frost,” Laughs Xiaoshi. “They were really nice, helped or not. Thanks for them.”

You’re left to smile at each other for a moment, and before it’s too long and too awkward, you clear your throat. “Gotta wash, uh, some dishes.” You scrunch your nose up as you bring the plate in your hand up a little.

You don’t miss the little shit-eating look Lu Guang gives you as you retreat behind the counter to wash the said dish, letting your eyes roll at his antics.

CXS: I

CXS: I DID IT

CXS: I TLAKED TO THEM

QL: cool

QL: does this mean you’ll stop bothering me ab them

CXS: screw you

CXS: i’m comign home in a bit btw

QL: okay, but make sure to get those digits

QL: don’t want you moping here

Xiaoshi, shutting his laptop down, presses his lips into a line after reading his roommate’s messages, suppressing an annoyed murmur. He stuffs the device into his backpack and sends a few more messages to stall his time in the cafe.

“He’s leaving,” Says Lu Guang. You smack him in the back for saying it too loud for your liking. The boy hisses and gives you a glare, whispering harshly, “He’s. Leaving.”

“Oh shit,” You mumble. In a nimble rush, you steal the pen from Lu Guang’s pocket and snatch a napkin, scribbling down in the fastest pace you can. You hope it’s readable.

Xiaoshi stands from his seat with his backpack slung over one shoulder, gathering all the courage in him to ask you one question. But when he turns around, he’s met with your deadpanning co-worker and a receipt in his hand.

“Your receipt.” He says in a monotone expression.

“Thanks…” Mumbles Xiaoshi, looking a bit over the boy’s shoulder. He sees you entering the back breakroom, untying the knot behind your apron. A wave of disappointment washes over him as he takes the paper strip from the white-haired boy, but it’s soon quelled by a small sense of curiosity when he feels a soft napkin under the receipt.

It’s your digits. It’s written a little messily, but he thinks it just adds to your charm. Under the said numbers is written carefully:

Macaron Maker :) ♡

“They were too nervous.” Sighs Lu Guang. Xiaoshi looks at him, wordless. The younger one picks the mug Xiaoshi had been drinking out of before from the table up, “To give it to you.”

Xiaoshi can’t help but steal another glance towards the backdoor, grinning a tight-lipped smile when he meets eyes with you, who bites the inside of your cheek out of embarrassment. He waves, you give one back.

The rain seems to have stopped when Xiaoshi strides out of the coffee shop, feeling a little stupidly giddy when he feels the warm rays of the sun adorn and rest on his face.

Of course you can, gosh I love this two so much heheh, hope you enjoy it!

“What is this book about again?” Cheng Xiaoshi asked unamused, leaning his head on  Guang’s shoulder. It was the third time he asked that question in just a couple of minutes, which was making his partner run out of patience. 

“I just told you, didn’t I?” Lu Guang sighed, trying to push the other’s head away from his shoulder. “And get off, it’s hot enough without you clinging onto me.”

It was hot, indeed. It was hot enough to melt someone to a puddle outside and, even with light clothes, sticking close to one another was a pain during summer days like this one. Yet, the heat wasn’t enough to beat Cheng Xiaoshi’s needs.

“Then let’s do something elseee,” the ravenhead whined dramatically, “I don’t want to spend all day sweating inside my room and getting eaten by mosquitos!”

“Then use some repellent, it should solve the problem,” Lu Guang said, shaking his head in disapproval of the other’s scene and trying to resume his book.

“You are no fun sometimes, you know tha- ACK!!” That grunt was loud enough to make the white-haired jump in his seat, turning to Cheng Xiaoshi with a puzzled look on his face. He watched as his partner rubbed his arm, his skin slightly reddened as moved his hand away.

“...are you okay?” Lu Guang asked, still trying to figure out what happened.

“Ugh, yeah… A bug bit me,” Cheng Xiaoshi cried out softly. Without saying anything, Lu Guang sighed, closing his book and getting up. There should be some medicine to put on that bite in the bat-

“Lu Guang…”

A pair of arms wrapped around his waist, pulling him right into the ravenhead’s lap. Lu Guang sighed, looking over his shoulder.

“Let me go, we need to put some medicine on thAHahat!” A stream of giggles interrupted Lu Guagn’s words when Cheng Xiaoshi scribbled over his sides. “W-whahat- what ahare you dohOHOhing?!”

“Ahh ~~ I can’t- I can’t control myself… It must be the tickle bug’s bite, Lu Guang! ~” The ravenhead cooed, grinning as he started tickling his partner’s stomach, making him try to curl into a ball on top of his lap. Who could tell that knowing about Lu Guang’s ticklishness would come handy in such a boring afternoon?

“S-stohohop it, yoHOhou idiHIhiot, lehehet me goohoh!”

“I can’t, I’m really trying to, but I can’t,” he giggled along his friend, trying to sneak his hands inside the other’s shirt to pinch his bare sides, “we will have to wait for the bite’s effects to wear out ~”

“NOHohoh! AHahahah!! ~”

since we have no idea how lg and cxs have their powers i'm just gonna go with "they were born with them"

and because kids can be stupid they were

lg used to take pictures and see in the future to find out how his day would go (like if he needed to wear a jacket or bring his umbrella)

cxs used to take pictures the morning before every test and if he flunked it too badly he re-took it

after lg found out about that (in college, is that when they met?) he made him stop

cxs mostly did but he took a picture before he confessed to lg. just in case.

a few years later he returns to that picture (the only one he has left), sobbing, and tells lg everything that will happen and how he will die (he's unaware that lg is ok) and makes him promise he won't do that.

after he confesses to lg, already aware it's mutual, because he is aware that that was an important point for them.

after lg just tells cxs that old him just wanted to re-live some memories and don't you ever dare use your powers so frivilously

It’s a hot day. CXS is dying and QL has come back from the store with some popsicles in hand

“Hey, Cheng Xiaoshi,” Qiao Ling calls out. Said man was currently dying on the couch, a small fan in hand lethargically waving air to his face. He doesn’t look her way or even twitch as beads of sweat drip down his face.

“Hey,” he greets back lazily as more of an acknowledgement that he heard her than anything.

She steps into the room, a bag in her hands. “Ugh, how can you even stand being in here with no AC?” Qiao Ling plops onto the other side of the couch and pulls out a popsicle. She tears into it with no hesitation before sticking it into her mouth, relishing its sweet coldness.

“I have a fan.”

“Ah yes, a very effective fan. I can almost see the icy wind it creates with each wave.”

“Shuddup. Where’s my share?”

“Hmph, I’m the one who went out in 34 degree weather. What makes you so deserving of some popsicle?”

“Please Qiao Ling…”

Ignoring him, she proceeds to gush about how nice her popsicle was. “Ah, so cold and refreshing!” She exclaims, really lathering in her enjoyment. “It’s so sweet and good to have a cold treat in this heat.”

At this point Cheng Xiaoshi has abandoned his fan and seat to kneel at her feet. Mustering up his best puppy dog eyes, he looks up, pleading. “Qiao Ling… Please be kind and give this poor man some popsicle,” he whines.

Qiao Ling almost laughs, but she holds up her cool facade and peers away. “Hmm… What will you do for it then?”

“Anything!”

“Anything?” She smiles. “Then my portion of the chores for a whole month!”

“On second thought, maybe I’ll just deal with-”

“Two weeks!”

Cheng Xiaoshi starts to stand.

“One week! You do one week of my chores,” Qiao Ling cries out, trying not to waste the opportunity. She quickly tosses the bag towards Cheng Xiaoshi who catches it with ease.

Her affirmation came in the form of an eager nod as her friend tears into the popsicle like a starved man.

♥♥♥ Out of the three works in this fandom, two were gifts for me (and they were absolutely wonderful check them out here and here), so of course I had to read the third one as well. It was a sort of bittersweet, nostalgic tale about Ginko's life in his old age, when the world begins to leave him behind and the eternal darkness grows ever closer.
