Dangerous Moves (1984). During the Cold War, the World Chess Championship clashed complete opposites - personal and political.
Oddly forgettable given the subject matter. This one never quite becomes the movie that it wants to be, and while it offers an interesting perspective both on chess and the Cold War, it never really seems to find the driving force of its own story. 5/10.

Thrill the Magician
I think you can safely consider Thrills in the Night from Animalize (1984) as a kind of sequel to Magic Touch from Dynasty (1979). Or, at least, as one of those songs that somehow simply belong together with certain others.
In doing so, one should be aware that Magic Touch functions as a link in a transformative phase between Paul's '78 solo album and the sporadic Kiss schmaltz of the '80s, which peaked between Creatures of the Night (1982) and Asylum (1985), the phase in which Paul noticeably got involved in pitches and singing techniques beyond his klassik sleaze-and-shout of the early days.
If you focus on the vocal middle section of Magic Touch and compare it to the verses of Thrills in the Night, you can't help but notice that the continuation principle works pretty well here, except in their emotional ambitions, because instead of Paul's falsetto, there is a good bit of Paul's cheese-drama voice. I guess that's how it has to be.
But if you also take a quick look at both main riffs in their pompous, graceful impact, especially in the second half of Magic Touch, you can only find further confirmation there, and if you wanted to, you could easily add Tears Are Falling as the third in this equation.
And from there, it wouldn't be that far away from Tonight You Belong to Me (1978) and A Million to One (1983), and one would basically have the central cheese field in view which Paul diligently tilled with his mighty schmaltz back then, and which, of course, has developed accordingly splendidly.
Perhaps Paul would have become a capable pizza chef already back then, in the 80s - He had obviously had what it takes for some time.

breaking my silence on chess the musical to say that i would literally not give a fuck about this show if i thought it was good or fully successful at what it is saying. SORRY! i love how messy she is. i love how since 1984 and continuing to this very day people with entirely different perceptions of and opinions on the musical have attempted in their own ways to "make it good" by creating all these different versions with like notably different plots, characterization, and song order, and i love how fucking bad the vast majority of these are despite it all. i hope people keep trying to fix chess the musical forever and until the end of time. i hope no one ever figures it out. i want every currently living theatre director in existence to make their own version and for all these versions to come out on broadway at the same time, making that year's musical season entirely comprised of various different versions of the cold war chess musical by tim rice and half of abba. i want not only our greatest minds but also our middlest-of-the-road and worst minds to come up with their own conclusions as to why chess does not entirely work in its original form or any subsequent forms like to really think about it and yes i do want someone to dedicate their entire life to perfecting chess by releasing version after version after version until they die peacefully but still, as always, in the grips of obsession. i want marriages to be broken up. i want mental states to be shattered. i dream of this world

Is anyone in the market for a villains lair? This house is for you. Built in 1984, (renovated and updated), Bar Harbor, Maine. 6bds, 5ba, $6.995M + $167mo. HOA fee.
Tumblr media
In the entrance hall is a strange carving and what appears to be a flamingo on a log.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this isn't a villain's lair, then I don't know what is. Look at those big-ass beams and columns.
Tumblr media
There's a marble sink in here.
Tumblr media
Here's a lounge
Tumblr media
Big marble fireplaces. The ceiling in this room is crazy- there's got to be a weapon hidden in that chandelier.
Tumblr media
Looking up at the ceiling and chandie. Nerve gas could come out of those gold things.
Tumblr media
A villain has to have a big black piano for dramatic effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Off this room is a powder room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beautiful sun porch.
Tumblr media
Closeup of one of the massive marble fireplaces.
Tumblr media
Look at the gray marble columns in the hall.
Tumblr media
Gray bath on the first floor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The primary bedroom.
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe bath with a red vintage tub and Victorian toilet.
Tumblr media
One of the secondary bedrooms.
Tumblr media
They don't show a kitchen, and I don't know if this is an old pool or a water feature.
Tumblr media
There's a giant chess set, but I don't know why there's a swing within kicking distance of it.
Tumblr media
The property is 6.25 acres.
Tumblr media
Of course there has to be an escape route by water.

Norrisville High, 1984
Mac Antfee - Junior, 18
Mac is the current Ninja of Norrisville, and has been for the last five years (redid freshman year three times)
Mac grew up hunting with his family; he’s not afraid of the rough-and-tumble fighting the Ninja has to do and will often attack with his bare hands
His relationship with Hannibal is very tense. They used to be closer at the beginning of high school, but Mac is beginning to let his jealousy get the better of him
The biggest conflict here is that Mac Antfee was not well-liked, but the ninja was. Everything he went on to do was driven by a deep-rooted fear that he would become obsolete without the suit
Hannibal McFist - Junior, 16
Member of the NHS football team and just organized the brand-new NHS Mustache Society. Hannibal is popular and rich and well-liked. Nobody quite understands why he still hangs around Mac but no one says anything either. Mac knows he’s out of place in Hannibal’s social circles
Hannibal knows Mac is the ninja, but doesn’t do much about it. He’s not like Howard - Hannibal doesn’t like to get involved with Ninja Business
Hannibal is head-over-heels for Marci but knows he has no chance with her
Marci Kranksi - Junior, 16
Marci is an Army Brat - her father serves in the military, so she moves states every couple of years
She stayed in Norrisville for only two years (her sophomore and junior years, 1983/84)
Marci is a heartthrob, but she’s very loyal to her out-of-state boyfriend (who goes on to be Bash’s bio father)
Marlene Gatlin - Junior, 17
Mary goes on to be the crooked Mrs. Driscoll, but in high school she was very popular. She’s pretty and funny and loves drama
Mary is high up socially, think cheerleader popular, but prefers the science wing and the nerds that are in it
Her love life is MESSY. Everybody wants Mary Gatlin. She’s the It Girl. Somewhere along the way it became common knowledge that if you wanted to ask her out, you had to get her attention by pulling the fire alarm. We know her type lmaoooo
Mac is in love with her, but of course Mary is more interested in Hannibal (she doesn’t date gingers). This is another point of contention between the boys
Willem Viceroy III - Freshman, 13
Willem - never Will or god forbid William, he’s very insistent about it - is a science prodigy. He’s in the same chemistry class as Hannibal and Mac, which is how they met
Willem doesn’t like Hannibal necessarily, but he’s a nearly impenetrable guard against being bullied. He’s a little bit like the group’s pet freshman and annoying as it is, it keeps him safe
Mort Weinerman - Freshman, 14
Mort is the most loser-est guy on this list. He’s the faceless freshman that wants to be cool
He’s part of the chess club and is very advanced in math. He has a couple band geek acquaintances but no solid friends
Mort knows Willem by name, but Willem doesn’t seem to know Mort. Same with Hannibal, Mary, Marci, and Mac
To be so honest, Morty here has no real tie to their plots. Like generally I think he grew up in a different state because of the accent so this is a Big Exception. But I couldn’t do this and not include him ok🙄

William Windom
Tumblr media
Physique: Husky Build Height: 5'10½" (1.79 m)
William Windom (September 28, 1923 – August 16, 2012; aged 88) was an American actor. He was known as a character actor of the stage and screen. He was perhaps best known for his work on television, including the character of John Monroe on the sitcom My World and Welcome to It; as Commodore Matt Decker, commander of the doomed USS Constellation in the Star Trek episode “The Doomsday Machine” and perhaps the most common recurring character, Dr. Seth Hazlitt, on the CBS series Murder, She Wrote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chubby, gray hair, gentle features but with a hint grumpy grandpa added for good measure. And he had a hot, gruff voice that makes me I want to bang his ass all night long. He just looks like he would have been a filthy whore in bed and a talker. I can always get behind a talker in bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A man of all mediums, this veteran, Manhattan-born character actor was named after his great-grandfather, Lincolnesque Congressman William Windom. He attended Williams College and the University of Kentucky, among others, before serving in the Army during WWII. After the war, he studied at both Fordham and Columbia universities in New York City before settling on an acting career.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Windom died on August 16, 2012, at age 88 from congestive heart failure. A chess, tennis and sailing enthusiast, he is survived by four children. He was quite a colorful character and apparently loved the ladies, having wed five times. Seems like a man who likes to keep his dick in a hole at all times. I would have happily volunteered to keep his dick well lubricated anytime he needed. He just looks like he would be a filthy whore in bed. He also seems to sweat quite a bit, so the sex would be hot, wet and messy.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Children of the Corn: The Gathering (1996) Murder, She Wrote (1984 TV Series) Miracle on 34th Street (1994) Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman (1993)

ive been rereading hp recently and one thing that confuses me is ron's first wand bcs its charlies but charlie gave it to ron after leaving hogwarts?? i dont understand why. did charlie not need a wand? did he get a new one? (if he did get a new one, why? and why could ron not have gotten a new one too?) it just seems so strange and goes against everything else we seem to learn about wands later.
i also suspect the reason ron struggled so much in early years is because of his second hand wand. ron is quite smart (the chess game) and even magically pretty decent (he learns a patronus fairly quickly in ootp and thats deemed hard magic, can hold his own in fights, etc).
im curious on ur opinions on this and about ron's wand situation. (sorry if uve discussed it before and ive just missed it!)
I didn't discuss this before, and it is interesting. I don't think we have a canon answer to why Chalrie replaced his wand, but we do know he still has a wand. He'd have to, considering wands are everything for European wizards and he'd need it as a dragon tamer.
Charlie was born in December 1972, so he started Hogwarts in September of 1984 and graduated his seventh year in June of 1991, a few months before Ron started Hogwarts in September of 1991.
Why would he choose to get a new wand and give his old one to Ron at that point? I don't actually know, but I have a few possibilities, from least likely to most likely:
1. The wand stopped working for him. Charlie's personality or goals or something else changed drastically during his final year or graduation, and he needed to get a new wand because his old one didn't really work for him anymore.
2. There's a superstition that wizards who want to work with dragons should have a dragon heartstring wand. As Charlie knew he was going to work at a dragon reserve and his wand had a unicorn hair core, he might have chosen to replace it from the misguided belief a different core would be better for his profession. (I don't actually know if this superstition is a thing, I made it up as something that could get him to replace his wand and it seems reasonable with the kind of wand superstitions they have in the wizarding world).
3. It's possible that the wand wasn't even bought for Charlie, but used to belong to Grandpa Septimus or something and he used it while at school, then when he graduated, he saved up his own money to buy himself a wand of his own, since his wasn't actually made for him. So, then, Ron was using an even older family wand.
And yeah, I agree. We see it with Neville too, who is using his father's wand and it affects his magic negatively. However, I think Ron was much less affected than Neville since the core and wood of Charlie's wand did suit him. It wasn't the best fit, but it was a decent one, unlike Neville who had to fight his wand and feared it.
