Meet Andrea Y. Motley Crabtree @motleycrabtree —the first woman to pass the rigorous U.S. Army test for deep sea diving, a highly specialized aspect of military service. 🌊 👩‍🚀 ⁣
Based on a photograph taken in 1982 at a U.S. Navy facility in Panama City, Florida, this painting by Henry Taylor shows Crabtree wearing a standard white diving uniform and holding a Mark V helmet in her lap—a full suit that cumulatively weighed 198 lbs.⁣
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, Crabtree and her service dog Buddy visited The Met to see her portrait on view for the first time. Despite her monumental achievement in the military, her path forward was hindered by sexism and racism, prompting thoughts that speak to many of the exact questions posed in the Afrofuturist Period Room where the portrait is on view. As Crabtree remarks, “What could have been? What could I be if I had been allowed to be all that I could be? Same as Seneca village…what could have been had they been allowed to thrive?”⁣
Taylor’s captivating painting remains inspirational to Crabtree. When told that visitors sometimes confuse her gear for other professions, she doesn’t mind: ⁣
“If they see me as a pilot or as an astronaut, that’s alright, too. It says I can be anything I want to be!”⁣

As the morning progressed, different groups of people arrived, appearing on the sandy hills and coming down to bathe on the beach. It was understood that after eleven the women and children of the summer colony became the masters of the beach. In the first place the women undressed, put on their bathing suits and covered their heads with hideous bathing caps; then they unzipped the children. The beach was littered with little piles of dresses and shoes; the big summer hats, held up with stones to keep the wind from carrying them away, looked like huge pendentives. It was curious, but even the sea seemed to adopt a different sound when all those laughing and jumping figures entered the waves."⠀ ⠀ Katherine Mansfield⠀ Fiesta en el jardín / Party in the garden⠀ & Henry Taylor @chinatowntaylor (artist)⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #portraitart #portraitpainting #acrylic #acrylicart #acrylicpaint #acrylicpainting #acrylique #acrylicpainter #acryliconcanvas #acrylicpaints #acrylicpaintings #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #contemporarypainting #contemporarypaintings #contemporarypainter #newcontemporary #modernart #modernpainting #artgallery #contemporaryartgallery #figurative #figurativeart #figurativepainting #figurativeportrait #undergroundart #artdaily #vagabondwho #marcopolorules #henrytaylor https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Gmwvqod1R/?igshid=1isdislh3cmuw

“Either you slang rock or got a wicked jumpshot”.. • There is nothing more American than the visuals in this #HenryTaylor (@chinatowntaylor) painting. Imagine living across the street from a prison.. imagine having to not only avoid it physically but mentally.. imagine the obstacle of it all.. the track suit makes so much sense... in the words of @realghostfacekillah “RUN!”.. • Henry Taylor, The Long Jump by Carl Lewis, 2010 as part of #30Americans. • #artabovereality #track #prison #community #painting #contemporaryart #USA #Red #contemporarypainting #barnesfoundation #philadelphia #Gold #915 (at The Barnes Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5mIA3GnRME/?igshid=whuzt482ea7k

More images fr last night’s opening (see previous post) #HenryTaylor @chinatowntaylor Must see exhibition “NIECE COUSIN KIN LOOK HOW LONG IT'S BEEN” @blumandpoe NY Sep 24 – Nov 2, 2019. Danke @christianrosastudio for the 📸 It’s Los Angeles-based Henry Taylor’s 6th solo exhibition with the gallery. Consistent with Taylor’s oeuvre, these new paintings weave together visual references spanning contemporary politics, American social adversity, and the faces of his milieu articulated through the language of portraiture. However, this latest series includes many works created during Henry’s recent travels to #Dakar #Senegal, when @desti.knee and an entire crew were together for #KehindeWiley’s inauguration of his #BlackRockSenegal, compositions hatched from contemplations on the #AfricanDiaspora, #colonialism, #slavery, the odds of diverging routes of struggle, and also on unity and seeing oneself in the face of a stranger.  In the same way Taylor has depicted #AfricanAmerican sports stars, icons of #BlackHistory, or the patients of a state mental hospital, in this new series the artist captures an essence in his subjects that is both universal & exposes something of Taylor’s own emotional depth & personal storyline. As Zadie Smith wrote in 2018: “This is painting that goes way beyond the brute fact of a body. Other people look; Taylor sees. He puts himself in the way of people.” Each painting is another piece in an ever-growing visual collage reflecting a cultural community to which Taylor belongs, images that remain thinly veiled psychic snapshots of the artist’s path to mapping his own identity and the splintering fragments of a collective identity. #representationmatters #blackness #blackportraiture #blackexcellence #africa #africanamerican #blackart #contemporaryblackart #blumandpoe #blackbeauty #blackgirlmagic #blackidentity #artlovers #artcollectors #artcurators #artadvisory #artmuse #destineeross @desti.knee & #joakimvonditmar (at Blum & Poe) https://www.instagram.com/p/B217vbllZbB/?igshid=6985kc7xfl4u

At the helm of @celine, the iconoclastic @hedislimane is launching the French fashion house’s first fragrance collection. It's called Haute Parfumerie and it will feature 11 original scents, with names like Reptile and Nightclubbing. ⠀ ⠀ "Although each of the perfumes has a personality, a uniqueness, a singular trail and patina, in this Haute Parfumerie project for Celine there is the idea of defining my style as well as a crossways olfactory tone," Slimane told us. ✍️🏾Reposted from www.whitney.org
"For more than thirty years, the Los Angeles–based artist #HenryTaylor (b. 1958) has portrayed people from widely different backgrounds—family members, friends, neighbors, celebrities, politicians, and strangers—with a mixture of raw immediacy and tenderness. His improvisational approach to artmaking is hinted at in this exhibition’s title, Henry Taylor: B Side, which refers to the side of a record album that often contains lesser-known, more experimental songs.
Taylor’s paintings, executed quickly and instinctually from memory, newspaper clippings, snapshots, and in-person sittings, are variously light-hearted, intimate, and somber. In them, he combines flat planes of bold, sensuous color with areas of rich, intimate detail and loose brushstrokes to create paintings that feel alive. Guided by a deep-seated empathy for people and their lived experiences, Taylor captures the humanity, social milieu, and mood of his subjects, whose visceral presence is heightened by their closely cropped, often life-size images. In working from personal experience and shared history, Taylor offers a view of everyday life in the United States that is grounded in the experiences of his own community, including the incarceration, poverty, and often deadly interactions with police that disproportionately affect Black Americans. Deeply steeped in art history, his work forms a continuum with the expressive figurative painting and politically engaged work of European and American artists from Max Beckmann to Bob Thompson, Philip Guston, and Alice Neel."

Big review for 'Henry Taylor: B Side' at @moca in the @latimes @therealchristopherknight writes, "Taylor’s scenes of everyday life perform what might be called stop-motion image-making. Formal stasis presses against visible paint handling. The picture sticks in your brain, while your body responds to the painterly scene. Sometimes the subject is grim, which adds to the impact." Read the full review via linkinbio. Exhibition catalog published by @delmonico_books Edited by Bennett Simpson. "No dejamos de querer a la gente cuando nos lo proponemos, el amor no termina cuando lo deseamos, termina un buen día, lo deseemos o no, y termina entonces de forma inevitable.
