Arms & Legs, by Chloe Lane

This is a deeply intimate snapshot into Georgie’s life. She is adjusting to a new life in Florida (a far cry from her home of New Zealand), to a new baby, and to a marriage that has slowed to a halt. 

Lane takes us in and out of Georgie’s past: the dry heat and never-ending battle of Florida contrasting with the lush greenery of New Zealand. It is a deep dive into desire and love, motherhood and freedom. 

As an expat from New Zealand, this book resonated with me. The struggle of forging a new life in a new country is tough at any time, especially so with a child involved. Georgie weighs up the pursuit of a new exciting life against the stability of the known. 

Georgie is a fascinating main character. We see her scars, both old and new. Is she just arms and legs, or is she more than that?

I wanna get something off of my chest.

Saying “What happened during season 3 and beyond with Chloe wasn’t actually a retcon and the writers planned all of it, actually.” Is not a good argument to me. Because THEN the question is: “Well, why did the writers spend a good chunk of S2 and a little bit if S3 building up Chloe’s character when that time could have been spent on oh idk LORE? Or maybe developing the love square? Or like developing any other character that wasn’t Chloe??”

And if your answer is “Well the writers wanted to establish that bad people can do good things to kids” then like, okay cool but also….why did they feel the need to make that point when MLB shouldn’t even be that complex (something the writers HAVE said to discredit some criticisms. Also wasn’t the ORIGINAL lesson from Chloe was that people don’t change? And wasn’t she changing during S2? This all doesn’t seem planned to me.)

Regardless, it STILL feels like a waste of time pouring time into a character that was just going to back pedal, a character MANY people were rooting for, just for a cheap way to teach kids about morality. The back pedal isn’t worth the pay off. And it’s not like the lesson itself isn’t a good lesson. But the moment the writers even eluded to the audience that Chloe could be more than just a one dimensional bully and people started to get invested in her story, she became a VERY bad target to teach the lesson with.

Not to mention saying “it was planned all along” just makes the rampant Chloe abuse apologia that much more disturbing since it’s implied that the writers KNEW what they were writing from season one and saw no issue with the implications of what was happening with Chloe and her parents.

So with all that being said. The Chloe debacle fluctuates between being a very poorly executed retcon and a waste of time on the writers, story AND the audience since they put time and effort into a character that was just going to fail from the get go.

"Y/N, we had one spoke agreement to our legally binding friendship. When you moved to Metropolis from New York, you were supposed to not fall for my Metropolis best friend. He has something going on with my cousin." Y/N heard Chloe's voice from the other side of the phone as Y/N rolled his eyes. His blonde BFF was a total spitfire, and Y/N made a promise to her that he would not fall for her hunky former farm boy best friend.

"Well, does your cousin have rocks for brains? No offense, Chloe, but Lois has that tall drink of hot cocoa with whipped cream and the Metropolis Marvel wrapped around her perfectly manicured fingers. It's not fair. She can't have both. Now, if tight spandex suits are what she's into, fine, but I want to ride that farm boy's tractor till the cows come home."

Even though he couldn't see her face, he knew Chloe was making a face. "Ugh, God! Y/N, that's disgusting! I can't believe you said that about my best friend."

"I'm sorry, Chloe, but it's true. And if your cousin doesn't make a move soon, or chose who she wants to be with, I'll do it for her. Because Clark Kent is the nicest guy ever and if Lois doesn't want him, I'll gladly take him off her hands." Y/N said.

Chloe sighed. "Fine. Just don't say I didn't warn you when Lois becomes territorial."

"I think I can handle the... as the bullpen calls her... 'The bitch on heels.'"

"Fine. Happy hunting."

"Thanks, Chloe. Bye!"

Chloe hangs up and sighs once again as a sudden gust blows through her apartment as a voice talks behind her. "What did Y/N say about me? Does he like me?" The blonde woman gasped and turned to see her smiling best friend, Clark Kent.

She put a hand over her rapidly beating heart. "Jesus, Clark. You scared the hell out of me. And were you listening in on my conversation?"

Clark blushed. "No...?"

"Liar, liar, pants on fire."
