Why I don't like "Wednesday" the new Netflix series
Now, I was really hoping to not have anything negative to say about the new Wednesday series because I absolutely love The Addams Family and I love Tim Burton (bonus points if the music is by Danny Elfman which 98% of the time it is) but there were many problems I had with the series and I'm just going to talk about why.
1: They ruined Wednesday's relationship with her mother
Tumblr media
I don't know about in the comics but in the original show, and the two movies (we do NOT count the abomination of those animated movies that came out recently) but Wednesday was always close with her mother, they complimented each other, and she looked up to Morticia and wanted to be like her. BUT FOR SOME REASON in the show Wednesday all of a sudden, hates (or at least it's shown that way) Morticia and says things like "I am nothing like you" "I don't want to be like you" even down to not having a romantic side like her mother using the same nicknames (like in the movie with the nerd) and I get that she's a teenager, but like that was a big part of her character imo.
2: The parents are godawfully annoying
Tumblr media
They probably did this for the very reason that the show is called Wednesday and it's probably trying to get us to see through Wednesday's p.o.v so she'd find them annoying but like, their love being so sweet and genuine was one of the best parts in the show that was more for the older kids and adults to enjoy, and Wednesday ONLY SHOWED THAT IN THEIR FLASHBACK.
3: The show took away what The Addams were all about
Tumblr media
The Addams were like outcasts to the "Normies" as the show likes to call them. And having Wednesday go to a school where she "fits in" because she really wasn't and outcast to the outcasts no matter what the show tries to trick you, but if she went to a "Normies" school instead of being expelled like in the first episode she could have been the Wednesday that the real Addams Family fans know and love.
4: The didn't even add one of the best characters from the movies
Tumblr media
Joel (if I am getting that right) was such a cute addition to the movie, the dynamic that he had with Wednesday because they were such opposites were the highlights to the movie. He was a nerdy kid that liked to be alone, and she just liked to be alone. But I was pretty disappointed that they didn't choose to add him in and instead had the Coffee shop boy and Painter as love interests (I'm not going to include Wolfgirl since she isn't cannon to liking Wednesday, and she's too fucking annoying for me to handle)
5: Our classic Wednesday & Pugsley duo
Tumblr media
I mean like how could you separate these two? and IK that Wolfgirl could be a (possible) substitute for the absence of Pugsley, but it is very disappointing to not see the duo back at it creeping out other kids and even plotting things against their friends/family but that was definitely a lose
6: They really shouldn't have had Wednesday go to a Walmart version of Monster High
Tumblr media
One of the things that made The Addams Family THE ADDAMS FAMILY was the fact that they were just a family, like others but they were just different. Which is why the lyrics were
"They're creepy and they're kooky Mysterious and spooky They're all together ooky The Addams family
Their house is a museum When people come to see 'em They really are a screaming The Addams family"
And I KNOW that this is just a different adaptation but how can you call it The Addams Family when you basically have her like EVERY OTHER CHARACTER SHE INTERACTS WITH. it just ruined that part, and she should have never been expelled for that piranha incident.
7: I'm not completely on board with the supernatural aspects
Tumblr media
Actually, for this one I'm not really talking about her visions (don't get me wrong that whole aspect was definitely weird at first but I'm talking about Wolfgirl, Siren, Duce, Telekinesis boy, and maybe even painter boy (who I'm pretty sure is just like the nerd but anyways). Because The Addams WEREN'T ABOUT THAT they were about creeping other people out and I get that they had other friends like cousin IT and the kid WHAT but those were just tiny aspects, and they were rarely part of the movies and mostly there for parties. It just makes no sense for there to be a bunch of outcasts for THE ADDAMS FAMILY
Aside from those major things the more problems I have are with the other characters that she interacts with, mostly Wolfgirl that one really annoyed me Siren was more of a disagreement Wednesday had at the beginning but then got along with afterwards and she was pretty interesting.
I didn't entirely like the whole Monster Killer reveal, and how predictable it was or that whole grooming scenario but that whole storyline was more for the plot than anything.
but there are things I did like about the show:
Walmart Duce and Wolfgirls relationship (weather romance or not the puppy love is cute)
I like when they make Wednesday, Wednesday like how she enjoys digging up graves, or doesn't cry, or show affection
I did like the Coffee Shop kid and honestly, I think he needs help from Wednesday. He was after all groomed by that teacher (when I tell you I gaged watched that scene, I mean it) and she did use his mother against him and controlled him until he gave in which is really sad and I want Wednesday to help him
I did like painterboy too, he became pretty stiff afterwards but if they give him more development that'll be nice to see him interact with Wednesday (she seems to care for him at some extent to jump infront of the arrow for him)
I like Siren girl and the Mayors son, I want to see more interactions from them
THAT MORTICIA AND GOMEZ FLASHBACK IS EVERYTHING TO ME IK THAT WHOLE STORY WAS SO FREAKING PREDICTABLE BUT DAMN THE FACT THAT HE GOT ARRESTED FOR HER MADE MY HEART SKIP A BEAT
I did like the sheriff, IK he was an asshole to the Addams at first, but I liked when they finally made amends
Coffee shop kid and Wednesday's first date was pretty cute, but it would be 1000000000000x better with summercamp nerd

Episode Two and Three
I love that they made Christina Ricci's character a normie. Bianca is totally in love with Xavier is obvious. I hope Bianca turns out to be an ally.
I cackle everytime Wednesday runs away from any kind of emotional connection with Enid, but with the boys she takes advantage lol.
Jenna in the cat outfit. Nuff said.
I knew Pricipal Weems had a power, but shapeshifting is awesome. She doesnt seem to want Wednesday to succeed but she does? Its weird. I think she mightve liked Morticia? And is it actually her original form? Or the weird Pilgrim dude in disguise?
That boat race was intense. Wednesdays psychic powers are crazy strong. I love how her being so emo isnt too much though or overpowering, its nuanced.
Making Poe an outcast AND THE TWO SNAPS?!? What a way to work that in!!
Not suprised her parents were in this society, but it was funny when she turned them down lol. I get the feeling she's descended from the witches of Salem and the Pilgrims are the real evil? Which is probably why Gomez and Morticia pushed her to go.
Theyre making it seem like Weems is pushing Wednesday towards things, but I think its Thornhill.
I dont think its Enid anymore, maybe its the sheriffs kid whose the monster? Its protected Wednesday so maybe she can control it as well?
Normies are hella sus tho. And it could be me, but there's no chemistry with Enid and Wednesday with the boys they're supposed to like? Also the pink and blue combs? What?
Eugene better come outta all this unscathed he is too pure. I know they created Pilgrim World for the show but I wouldnt be surprised if it actually existed lol. Also the nod to Addams Family Values with Wednesday fighting off the jerks and talking of the whitewashing. Brava.
If Thornhill turns out to be future Wednesday or past Wednsday or something I will FLIP. I mean why cast the OG?
I hope Ajax doesnt die I love Gorgons. This whole love triangle thing is weird as hell. Also I knew that was her ancestor! What the heck is that monster thing? It could genuinely be anyone.
Im sad Pugsley isnt in it as much, but Thing is absolutely hilarious. MORTICIAS MAIDEN NAME?!?!?

My brain is literally rotting. I’m so Yellowjackets obsessed. I found out Christina Ricci (OG Wednesday, who plays MISTY FUCKING QUIGLY in Yellowjackets) is doing a signing on streamily in October and I’m genuinely clowning myself cause I’m like ‘Huh! That’s only 81 dollars! I mean sure I only have 144 dollars to my name, but that doesn’t seem like a bad price at all! I’m so willing to give up that chunk of change to endorse my Yellowjackets obsession! She’s not even my favorite character!
HELP MEEEEEEE
If it wouldn't interfere with anything vital for your survival then it can be good to indulge yourself!!!! Just take care of the important stuff (and preferably try to add something to some sort of savings fun) before spending so much on something, especially when it's not like your uptmost top favorite part of the series yk?

I like how there is rude ass people talking about how they chose the wrong actor to play Gomez in Wednesday. Motherfucker, did they even see he looks like the Gomez from the OG Addams Family 1938??? I love all the Addams Family series including the black & white old TV series. Nobody knows who Christina Ricci is playing (1991 Wednesday). They said her role is major and she is in all 8 episodes. They are keeping her hidden. Some suggest she will be the new Fester but I highly doubt that. Now it was rumored that the actor playing in there who is also in all 8 episodes, Tommie Earl Jenkins will play Uncle Fester. They have him listed as Mayor Walker. Either a disguise name or playing homage to the 1990s Addams Family movies in some way. Other rumors says that Christina Ricci is playing Grandmama which would be dope and than some rumors are saying she is playing Wednesday and narrative to a murder mystery story she wrote based off her family. I am expecting Gwendoline Christie's character Larissa Weems to be the big bad like Debbie Jelinsky in Addams Family Values.
yeah.

Regarding the observations of my last post and the accompanied video excerpt of Noble getting Deer Crossing'ed: I feel it's more proof that Ortega's N/C Wednesday is already a "softened" version of the character of Wednesday Addams that most of us non-Boomers remember.
Ortega's Wednesday totally gasped and was shocked. Had it been Ricci's Wednesday? No gasp, look of excitement and wonder (probably with an actual smile too). That's why Christina is a 👑.
Fight me. And fight me over not editing the post to include this because the post's colors are already all fucked up and I don't want to fuck it up any more since it took a long time to do. Tumblr is messed up this morning. 🫠

Wednesday: A Review
So I recently watched the Wednesday series on Netflix and I have some thoughts 😂. I first got into the Addams family back in 2020(it was in fact one of my quarantine obsessions lol) and when I found out Netflix was making a series with Wednesday, I was intrigued but also a little nervous. Anyway I eventually watched the series and after watching it, I think I’m going to give it a 5.5-6/10(the 5.5-6 sort of depends on my feelings at the moment lol). So, here I’ll talk about what I liked, didn’t like, and what I hope to see in future seasons. Warning that this post is rather critical of the show at times, so read at your own risk 😝.
Cut for spoilers/long post
What I Liked
Jenna Ortega: It’s probably blatantly obvious, but Jenna Ortega was easily the best part of the entire seasons. She gave a phenomenal performance and while I definitely saw some similarities to Christina Ricci’s performance, Jenna was still able to bring out another side to Wednesday as well. I haven’t seen Jenna since her Disney Channel days and this showed that she really has what it takes to be a great actress. And it should go without saying- but the dance scene was iconic 😂
Wednesday and Enid’s friendship: I genuinely really liked the dynamic between these two girls. The actresses both had great chemistry with each other and although I sometimes think the dark/broody with the cheerful/peppy character can be a bit overused, I really liked it in this case. The scene at the end where they hug was really touching and I’d love to see those two interact even more. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about those two in a relationship(mainly because I feel like Wednesday isn’t interested in anyone…more on that later), but I will say that I would rather have them be in a relationship than that boring love triangle we got.
Christina Ricci/Ms Thornhill: I really enjoyed her character in this series. I thought it was really cool that they got the 90s Wednesday for the series and that she actually had an important part to play in the series. I will also admit that I hadn’t really expected her to be one of the villains, so that was a good twist for me. (Side note: I also think it would have been cool if Lisa Loring(aka the Og Wednesday) got a cameo too, but I digress lol). Christina Ricci did a really great job and I especially enjoyed her scenes with Wednesday and when she really showed her villainous side at the end.
The opening credits: 🤷‍♀️ What can I say? I’m a sucker for cool opening credits and this show delivered on that lol.
Tyler/the Hyde: So I didn’t really like the love triangle thing at all, but I did find Tyler being the Hyde interesting to me and honestly I think it would be cool to see the origins of him becoming a Hyde in future seasons. Idk if that would result in him being redeemed per say, but I think the show implies that he is not really aware of what he is doing as the Hyde. And even if he doesn’t get redeemed(I could see the show going either way tbh), I still think that part of him could be explored. At the very least I found that aspect of him more compelling than his “relationship” with Wednesday(again more on that later lol)
Thing: He may be just a hand, but he was very entertaining and I enjoyed his scenes with Wednesday and Enid quite a bit.
What I Didn’t Like
The Addams Family Dynamics: One of my favorite things about the Addams Family is that for all their creepy and macabre interests- at the core this is a family that really loves each other. They have one of the most wholesome family bonds I’ve ever seen and you can tell that the members of the family really care for one another. I…didn’t really get this feeling in the show. I understand that Wednesday is a teenager here, but I feel like having her be so against her parents is honestly just really dull and not true to the original characters. Wednesday and Morticia are usually shown to be close, but this series drove a wedge between them that I didn’t really appreciate. I also didn’t get why Morticia and Gomez would be so against Wednesday knowing about what Morticia did. It seemed OOC for me as judging from what we’ve seen from the Addams family previously- murder is not exactly on their red flags list(*glances at the movies from the 90s*). There was a bit more familial solidarity with Wednesday and Pugsley, but we really don’t see those two interact all that much. I understand that this is a show about Wednesday primarily, but I really didn’t really enjoy her dynamics with her family in the show(where normally it’s one of my favorite things in most of the other adaptions(animated movies aside lol) )
The Love Triangle: Good grief, did this nearly bore me to tears lol. For starters- I’m just tired of love triangles in general. 9 times out of 10, I can already predict who will “win” and it’s also just an overdone plot point by now. In this case, it was made worse because Wednesday literally shows no interest in either Xander or Tyler. And so I was struggling to see how those two could think she liked either one of them, because she only seemed to tolerate them at best. It also didn’t help that I wasn’t super interested in those two as characters(I became more interested in Tyler upon the Hyde reveal, but that was towards the end) let alone as love interests. I also think that Wednesday showed no real romantic feelings towards anyone and that if she was going to be with anyone it should be with Enid, because those two at least had good chemistry.
Wednesday being an Outsider: I’m going to be honest- I found it weird that at a school filled with werewolves, Sirens, and who knows what else- Wednesday was the outsider? This entire school is filled with people who are out of the ordinary and so one would think that weirdness is expected from everyone. I honestly think it would have been more interesting if people in the school were more accepting of Wednesday, because I think that could have led her to interact more with the characters at Nevermore. That also could’ve led to some more character development for the secondary characters, because outside of a few characters at the school- I didn’t really get the chance to care all that much for Wednesday’s classmates. They just didn’t really interest me all that much and the whole “Wednesday being an outsider” thing didn’t really help.
The Social Media References: Okay look. I know the show is set in modern days and as the Addams family often interacts with the regular world, they’re going to have to take note of that stuff. However in this case- the mentions of Instagram and TikTok only served to make me cringe than anything else. It also felt like it would make the show seem too outdated while in the movies and OG series case- they felt timeless. Yes it’s obvious that the OG series and the movies are set in the 60s and 90s respectively, but every time I watch those again, I never really get the outdated sense from them. However, in the series a lot of the modern “shout outs” were a little off putting and I feel like in a few years, it could really end up dating the series. Also since most of the show has a supernatural theme to it, I’ll admit that hearing stuff about Instagram or Tiktok could throw me for a loop at turns lol.
The CWness of it: Another reason why this show didn’t speak super highly to me is because it felt very CW in some ways. I felt like at times they leaned into the whole mystery/teen drama a little too much and I didn’t get the same macabre/spooky feeling I normally get from the Addams family. Rather at times I felt like I was just watching a CW show (just with more supernatural stuff lol)
Wednesday’s Classmates: With the exception of Enid and sometimes Xavier, Ajax, and Bianca, I wasn’t all that interested in the other characters. They didn’t really feel all that developed to me and when Wednesday enlists their help later on, the scene didn’t impact me all that much because I didn’t really feel like we got to see their relationship develop very well. It also seemed like a few of them(Ajax and Xavier mainly lol) existed mainly in terms of love interests which sort of stinks, because I didn’t really get a chance to care for them as individuals. I think it would have been more interesting if we could have seen Wednesday interact more with her other classmates or if they just got more characterization in general.
What I Hope To See
Better Family Dynamics: I’d love it if we could see Wednesday having a healthier relationship in any future seasons(like she does in other versions) and I’d also find it interesting to explore more of Enid’s family and her relationships with them as well.
More Development for Tyler: I found the reveal of Tyler being the Hyde to be rather interesting and more compelling than his “relationship” with Wednesday. I think exploring the Hyde side of him could be an interesting route to explore.
More Development for Bianca: She was one of the few classmates I found intriguing and I hope the show can do more with her. She also seems to have a complicated relationship with her mother and complicated familial relationships are kind of my jam(if my other favorite tv shows are any indication 😂)
Less Teen Drama(Aka no more love triangle): It should go without saying, but honestly the love triangle was just really overdone and forced and made the show seem a lot more CW than necessary. And I don’t even hate all CW shows, but it could make this series seem a little flat at times. I found the whole idea of a magical/supernatural school to be really cool and I think it would be better if they stuck more to the supernatural/mystery aspect of it all.
Anyway, that’s all my thoughts on the show for now. I honestly didn’t hate it or anything and I totally agree that Jenna Ortega was a fantastic Wednesday and she gave an exceptional performance.  I must admit that I am a bit wary now about any future seasons, but I liked it well enough to see a Season 2 :)

Bingo. And the worst part is their complete lack of self awareness. I don't remember any instances in the films when he gave and she took? I almost want to rewatch them now but meh lol
Oh yes i do also get put off by the oversexualization it's so try hardish. The two flirted quite often in the series but I see people go way overboard with them to the point of lunacy.
Oh it's not that I necessarily dislike the 90s version, I just found them to be a bit over the top, overrated and not worth all the hype they generate year round. Raul Julia was just putting on his best John Astin immitation yet people call him the greatest Gomez of all time? I think Angelica Huston looked okay in the part but I don't get why Millennias and Gen Z crowned her as their Mortisha when Carolyns wonderful and decidedly more...ahem upbeat performance is right there. Christina Ricci turned an adorable and morose little girl into an unlikable psycho in training. Christopher Lloyd's Fester is a disgusting perv. I could go on. As far as i'm concerned, granny was the only character in the movies that did a great job that honored the og actress
Yep.
I think a lot of these shippers wish they themselves had someone slavishly obsess over them like the most important person in the world, so they’re giddy to see it get validated by the AF. I strongly suspect it’s why they call Herman x Lily “boring” or unhealthy, because heaven forbid BOTH parties have a need for affection and attention while simultaneously respecting each other’s independence and hobbies outside of their spouse. I get a lot of husbands do not give as much as they take irl but Tish just acts like she inherently deserves to be worshipped while never having to reciprocate, and Gomez seems fine with the arrangement. That’s not a relationship based on mutual love and respect. (Seriously, I feel like therapy would do him good... Remember when he had a complete breakdown in the movie? Is he manic depressive? Anxious? I’m worried for you, Gomez!) I don’t understand how these are usually the same people hating on couples like Disney or rom coms or whatever when they’re no different, definitely no worse, than Tish x Gomez who are completely codependent unlike those ships.
TBH I do like Raul, he’s talented and he did try to make his Gomez relatively close to Jon’s which I respect as someone who prefers the old show, but I don’t disagree, people act like he invented Gomez himself. Anjelica being so loved makes sense when you think about it, Carolyn’s Tish is pretty much a normal wealthy housewife in terms of personality- docile, prim, proper, ladylike. People don’t respect these qualities anymore (when there’s nothing wrong with any of that). While AH’s Tish is still prim and proper to a T, she is also noticably colder and snarkier and downright catty at times. Add in a worshipful rich husband and children she doesn’t have to raise* and she’s every “I’m not like those stupid preppy girls” goth girl’s dream. Carolyn’s Tish was quite different from the comic’s but ultimately she’s still nice and friendly so I prefer her. Do goths need to always be mean or something?
Fester was never my favorite character, and while I don’t really have an issue with him in the movies (besides the perv part you mentioned), I’ve actually never liked Christopher Lloyd as him, as good an actor as he is. Christina Ricci was a very talented child actor but  my gosh, her Wednesday is honestly one of my least favorite characters ever and the whole reason we have a generation of girls who think they’re interesting for hating pink or fashion or whatnot. It’s fair to say the OG kids didn’t have much personality but I’ll take that over being a murderous little bully. (And of course, the perky suburban camp kids and attractive blonde Debbie are so over-the-top evil the movie practically forces you to side with the Addams, which is a message I don’t like.) Pugsley I guess is fine. I forget he’s there sometimes lol. Same for Lurch and Thing. Totally agree on Grandmama, she’s always been my favorite character and Carol Kane is hilarious. Cousin Itt also deserves a mention for being far more open-minded than the rest of his relatives are.

Continuities of Addams' Family pt 1: A comprehensive list
I can't take it. Everyone keeps conflating them. So I'll make a list for people to see.
This episode is just pertaining to the entries themselves, maybe a description, and maybe some minor fun facts about each thing (in rough order of release):
New Yorker Comic (1932/33): Dates vary on the "first" iirc it started as who would evolve to become "Morticia" later. None of the chars have names, outside the hinted 3rd child the "Morticia" char is carrying but never births. "Morticia" considered naming the kid: Cain or Ananias.
The Addams Family TV (1964/65, S1/2): Where chars first got their names. Pugsley was originally going to be named "Pubert" but the TV Network rejected the name and so he became Pugsley instead, but not in time for the toys to be produced. His plushie has titled as "Irving Addams" instead.
The New Scooby-Doo Movies/Wednesday is Missing (1972): Stealth pilot for The Addams Family Animated TV (1973). 1964's Gomez (John Astin), Morticia, Lurch, Fester reprise their roles for this short.
The Addams Family Animated TV (1973): There are 3 comic book issue tie-ins to this, iirc they are just comic book versions of 3 episodes from the show. This is the first point (?) where Fester/Grandmama's relationship with Gomez/Morticia change from the 64 version. Only Lurch and Fester reprise their roles from the 64 TV show. A Young Jodie Foster voices Pugsley.
The Addams Family Fun-House (1973): An ABC pilot for a new TV show. Was never picked up. Lost media. Apparently VERY BAD. They were going to have Eddie from The Munsters (OG iirc?) to play Pugsley.
Halloween with the New Addams Family (1977): Sequel/Reunion TV Movie for the 1964 TV show, pretty much everyone reprises their role from the show.
The Addams Family (1991): First theatrical movie. Changes Wednesday's personality to more dark-goth vibes.
Addams Family Values (1993): Sequel to the 1991 movie. Reintroduces the 3rd baby from the comic, and brings back the name Pubert for the new child.
Addams Family Reunion (1998): Direct to video movie, no relation to the theater movies nor the 64 sitcom nor it's 77 tv movie sequel. Tim Curry is Gomez. It is actually a stealth pilot for a new 1998 live action remake show (only the girl who played Wednesday would reprise her role for the show).
The Addams Family: The Animated Series (1992/93, S1/2): A new animated TV show, made thanks to the success of the 1991 movie. John Astin returns to voice Gomez again. ;D Wednesday has the same dark look, but keeps her cheery attitude from early iterations.
The New Addams' Family TV (1998-99): A remake of the 64 live action TV Show. Has new episodes in the line up along with remakes. Maybe tied to Addams' Family Reunion movie because the Wednesday actor returns for this show. John Astin returns for a special role for an episode or two. :3c
The Addams Family Musical (2010): A Broadway musical Adaptation. It's a play a lot of schools like to put on, so there's a few variations in each play book: Pre-Broadway, Broadway/Off Broadway, High School ver (might be almost the same as Broadway ver minus a few edits), Elementary school-30 min ver, and Elementary/Middle School-60 min ver. "Clandango" used to be the opening song rather than "When you're an Addams"
The Addams Family (2019): First theatrical animated movie.
The Addams Family 2 (2021): Sequel to the 2019 movie.
Wednesday (2022): New TV Spinoff featuring Wednesday. And Tim Burton gets to be part of it! The 90s movie Wednesday (Christina Ricci) returns to play a char in this show.
Misc info.
A lot of entries have video game or book tie ins. I won't get into it here. But maybe in a future episode.
Cancelled/Important Fanon pieces (technically Funhouse wasn't picked up but the pilot was produced so it stays up top):
Illumination's Stop Motion/Tim Burton 2010 movie: Was apparently going to happen but got cancelled in 2013. (at least we got ol' Timmy boi for Wednesday :'D)
Adult Wednesday Addams (2013-2015): A youtube video series, featuring Wednesday grown up (characterization seems to take after the 90s ver, specifically 1991/93 movies). Was cancelled bc copyright. ;w;

Wednesday Addams and the Battle for Nevermore Academy
I have a thing for goth girls. Pale, macabre, and borderline psychotic. I grew up in the Nineties and certain film heroines informed this infatuation and even encouraged it. I’m talking Selena Kyle from Batman Returns, Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, and Nancy Downs from The Craft. These women absolutely informed my sexual awakening as i found their grim charms and murderous wiles absolutely captivating. However, for me, the genesis of this interest in those witchy women started when i was seven years old and introduced to Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams. I was absolutely smitten ever since, with both the character archetype and the actress, herself. Fast forward what? Thirty years? and there’s a new Wednesday and she has her own show so you know i had to marathon the f*ck out of that sh*t!
Listen, his show is tailor-made for me. I love that Burton aesthetic, it stars one of my favorite characters, and Christina Ricci has a decently sized role. I was a little disappointed that this wasn’t, like, a fast-forward type situation where we got to see an adult Wednesday played by Ricci but that’s fine. The Netflix Wednesday show is it’s own thing and stands firmly on the strength of it’s world. Seriously, there is a lot of lore introduced in this show that kind of makes the Addams not so “strange” but, at the same time, never taking away from their absolute weirdness. I was a little disappointed that the majority of this show takes place at a school and, basically just outside in the neighboring town, but i get it. Harry Potter built and entire goddamn franchise rarely leaving Hogwarts and Wednesday cribs a lot from that trope. You get a whole yarn of an adventure which basically only has two locations. I am sure this was do to budget constraints but you kind of lose yourself in the overall narrative so it kind of doesn’t matter in the end. I do wish the scope was bigger but there is enough here to forgive how small this little narrative ends up feeling.
I’ve heard that Wednesday feels like a CW teen drama but with solid production values and i can see that being a thing. You’d be forgiven is you basically came away from this show thinking it’s basically just the Chilling Adventure of Wednesday Addams. If you watch those shows religiously, you’ll see man of the same tropes and retreads. The overall plot is kind of easy to figure out and the climax is more of a “what the f*ck” kind of situation but, i mean, it’s a teen dramedy starring a high functioning sociopath who is hyper-fixated on the darkest aspects of the human experience. It’s absolutely f*cking endearing and i loved the twists, even if they were telegraphed from a mile away. Like, this sh*t isn’t winning any awards but it’s head-and-shoulders better than the likes of, say, Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars. That Sabrina comparison is actually pretty apt because Wednesday is probably as good as the best season of that show. I’d say it’s better simply because the characters are far richer and performed with so much more passion, specifically Jenna Ortega.
Ortega’s take on Wednesday is both familiar and different from anything I've seen. It’s very obvious Jenna has based a great deal of her initial performance of Ricci’s take and i imagine having the OG Wednesday on set, went a long way to helping her nail those subtle mannerisms but Ortega’s take is, surprisingly, much warmer. I'll always love Ricci’s version but Ortega’s is definitely a close second and that’s probably because we got to see this Wednesday actually grow over an eight episode arc. Actually staying with this character, watching her grow as she builds relationships outside of her principal family members (Wednesday’s burgeoning friendships with Enid and Eugene are everything) was something special to witness. It helps tremendously that the supporting cast is up to the task because matching Ortega’s energy was definitely a tall order. I mean, did you see that dance scene? That sh*t was perfectly Wednesday!
All in all, i thought this first season was pretty good. I loved the performances and the world we were introduced to in this rather brisk, eight episode count. This is definitely Jenna Ortega’s show and will go as far as she can carry it but Wednesday has help carrying that weight. I particularly enjoyed Emma Myers’ Enid Sinclair but the rest of the supporting cast was pretty solid. I enjoyed seeing Gwendolyn Christie in something where she was able to actually, you know, act. Obviously Catherine Zeta-Jones did her thing but Luis Guzman stole every scene he was in. Actually, i just want to stop and properly recognize that the Addams are actually Hispanic in descent. Like, Gomez is straight up Mexican in this and i love that. Ultimately, Wednesday was a fun little watch. I have a few problems with the scripting, some rather poor aspects of writing at times, and a climax that felt a little underwhelming but, overall, i can pretty enthusiastically recommend this show. If you have Netflix, definitely check this one out!
