Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Day No. 3, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Oct. 1, 2023

Not only are they fascinating to watch, hummingbirds have fantastic taste in music.

How else to explain the little avian hovering about Sierra Hull’s soundcheck and late-morning set at the Banjo stage on Day Three of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass?

Little birdie picked a good place to flutter around as Hull and her band played an energetic bluegrass-with-drums set, which Mr. and Mrs. Sound Bites took in in full after catching a few songs of Jon Langford & the Bright Shiners’ Scottish protest music at the Rooster.

Peeling off to catch parts of sets would be the theme for a first day of October stacked with outstanding performers who put the Hardly Strictly in the formerly Bluegrass-only fest inside San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

But first, a full set by Eilen Jewell - playing a guitar borrowed from Chuck Prophet - on Rooster, which found the singer and her band playing tracks from Gypsy and Get Behind the Wheel and simply slaying with a note-perfect rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River.” Guitarist Jerry Miller is nearly as important as Jewell to the band’s success, adding twangy, country-rock spice to Jewell’s songs of love and adventure.

Then, back to the Banjo stage where musical chameleon Gabby Moreno served up slices of cumbia and American rock ‘n’ roll back-to-back and sung them in Spanish and English.

After a quick visit to Prophet and the Mission Express on Rooster, the Sound Biteses floated over to Swan for Valerie June. Wearing a loud orange outfit and backed with pedal steel, organ and rhythm section, June spun an impossible-to-categorize web of funk, soul and Americana while playing banjo and acoustic guitar and meting out songs such as “Call Me a Fool.”

Peeling off once again, the Sound Biteses were back at Banjo in time for the Travelin’ McCourys, with Punch Brothers/Might Poplar (whom we missed in favor of Emmylou Harris) banjo man Noam Pikelny filling in for Rob McCoury, and a blistering set of pure bluegrass that included “The Shaker” and “Scarlet Begonias,” with a triple-time back end, filling the park the Grateful Dead played so many times.

“Seems appropriate,” Ronnie McCoury said as your diarists peeled off yet again to the tiny Horseshoe Hill stage, for a packed 100th-anniversary tribute to Doc Watson by Mitch Greenhill, playing one of Watson’s guitars, Nora Brown and Stephanie Coleman with guest slots from Andrew Marlin, June and Langford.

“Summertime,” June’s rendition of “Handsome Molly,” Langford getting the lyrics to “Tom Dooley” from a piece of paper and “Southbound” were all on offer. And it all ended with the glorious experience of a couple hundred people singing “Keep on the Sunny Side” under the foggy skies and tall trees of Golden Gate Park.

After this life-affirming interlude, the Jerry Douglas Band was pushing blues-rock and jazz flecked with bluegrass on the Swan stage. Another peel and back to the Banjo where Rufus Wainwright played solo-acoustic and his singular voice wafted across the large expanse to the Arrow stage where Tommy Emmanuel dealt the festival’s penultimate set to a relatively small, but appreciative, hard-listening audience.

Gasps filled the air as Emmanuel played inhuman runs on his acoustic guitar on such songs as “Sixteen Tons,” “Deep River Blues” and “Blue Moon.” He introduced a phantom band as he played a bassline, then percussion and rhythm before adding lead and left the audience agog as he played them simultaneously. He wrapped up his portion with the instrumentals “Imagine” and “Beatles Medley” as Harris began her closing set back where the day began on Banjo.

With a four-piece band of multi-instrumentalists behind her, Harris concluded HSB in grand style. “Miss the Mississippi and You,” “Pancho and Lefty,” “Hickory Wind,” “Evangeline” and “The Boxer” all filled the cool, early-evening air and added a extra layer of wistfulness to the end of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2023.

Langford smirks at Tommy, eyes flicking from the picture of Evan he has taped to the panel of the cockpit. “That your boy, Kinard?”

“No, it’s some stranger whose picture I stole,” Tommy deadpans.

“Ass,” Langford mutters, chucking a pen at him, which Tommy catches, to the other man’s annoyance. He’s “helping” Tommy conduct a pre-flight inspection, but really, he’s just here to give him shit.

Jack Langford joined Harbor a year after Tommy and he’d annoyed Tommy into friendship with him. He doesn’t mind Tommy’s snark and didn’t bat an eye when he found out he was gay. He even took it upon himself to act as Tommy’s wingman (pun not intended) before he found Evan.

“So, when are you introducing us?”

“Oh I’m not sure he, or anyone should be subjected to you so soon,” Tommy grins, checking the last few items of their list. Everything’s in order, he takes care to keep his machines running in tip-top shape.

“Come on, I’m a goddamn delight and you know it,” Jack whines. “Bring him to trivia night next week!”

Tommy doesn’t tell him the invitation had already been extended by the rest of the crew. He’d asked Evan, who eagerly accepted. “Ok, ok, just for you, Jack,” he sighs, tone all saccharine sarcasm.

“Ah, I knew you loved me, Kinard,” Jack blows a kiss at him.

Tommy shakes his head and can’t help but smile. 118 repressed Tommy would never believe he’d be here, bantering about his boyfriend, with another man in their line of work.

“He’s gonna kick everyone’s ass at trivia- he’s a fountain of knowledge,” he mentions proudly, not hiding the stupid, fond look on his face.

“Wow, you’ve got it baaad,” Jack whistles. “I’m glad you’re bringing him. I mean, we have to meet the person who’s got our Tommy so besotted. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve seen ever seen you keep anything in here that isn’t necessary,” he looks pointedly at the picture of Evan.

“Yeah, yeah,” Tommy says, rolling his eyes, and then with a soft smile, “he’s… something else, unlike anyone I’ve ever met.”

“I’ll bet,” Jack smiles. “In fact, I already like him, if he’s got you mooning like that,” he declares, bumping Tommy’s elbow before they slip into their seats.

They buckle in and Tommy prepares them for take-off. He checks the throttle and ignites the engine, inspects the controls and gauges, then opens the throttle, watching for proper RPM. When everything looks as it should, he turns off the hydraulics to check the collective, then turns them back on. He looks at the gauges and fuel again to make sure they’re all still good.

And they’re good to go. He raises the collective while adding left pedal, engages the cyclic, and they’re off. He still gets a rush every time he takes a chopper into the sky- it never gets old. He takes in the vast blue of the sky and reaches out to touch his fingers to the picture of Evan in front of him.

He’s in mid-laugh, eyes bright and that damn dimple shows in full force. Maddie has snapped it on her Polaroid camera, while he was laughing at something Tommy said. She slipped him the print with a wink and a knowing smile, and Tommy had no choice but to tape it to his cockpit, where Evan could always accompany him.

The lonely skies never really bothered him before- he enjoyed the solitude. But the thought of having a piece of Evan up there with him every time filled a hunger in him he hadn’t even realized was there.

Jack breaks the silence with a click of his phone camera, catching Tommy (seriously, who keeps their keyboard sounds on??) He’d only been silent before because he knows Tommy likes to focus when he’s taking off.

“Delete that, Langford!”

“Hm, don’t think so, bud. I’m sure Evan will want to see this,” he nods to himself. “In fact, I think I should submit this to the dictionary. They’ll put it right next to down horrendous.”

Tommy grimaces at the lingo Jack often interjects in conversation. I have a Gen Z nephew, sue me, is his usual defense. “I’ll crash this and take both of us down,” he mutters darkly.

Jack reaches over to push his shoulder. “No you won’t. Then your man will be all sad and lonely and you wouldn’t want that, right?” He shoots him a smug smile.

“No, no I wouldn’t,” Tommy says under his breath and smiles.

Concept Development

Today i was sorting through some of my old stuff from when I was a kid, and I found a collection of Flower Fairy books, by Cecily Mary Barker, as well as an old VHS tape of the movie Fairy Tale, which is based on the story of the Cottingley Fairies. These had both been much loved possessions of mine!

They got me thinking though, and I realised that for me personally, they were very connected to the theme of my project, connection with nature. I remember that really the flower fairy books were what first got me interested in nature, as each fairy is based on and illustrated amongst a specific plant or flower, and this genuinely taught me a lot about different plants! To this day I could name pretty much every english flower you chucked at me, purely because these books gave me an appreciation for them at a really young age.

The tale of the Cottingley fairies is actually very relevant to this course, the manipulated image, as I was reminded of when it was mentioned in in the essay we were set to read, a brief history of photography and truth (Langford, 2020).

The Cottingley Fairies appear in a series of five photographs taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, two young cousins who lived in the English countryside in 1917. Their photographs of the ‘fairies’ that they had supposedly made friends with at the bottom of their garden captured the public's imagination, including that of celebrated spiritualist and writer sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle believed the photos to be genuine, and interpreted them as clear and visible evidence of psychic phenomena. He was one of many to accept the images as real, though others believed that they had been faked.

In the early 1980s Elsie and Frances admitted that the photographs had been faked, using cardboard cutouts of fairies copied from children's books. Despite this, the Cottingley fairies remain one of the most famous examples of image manipulation since the invention of the camera, and the photos continue to fascinate children and adults alike.

Again, the movie had a strong effect on my connection with nature. When I was really young it definitely got me and my sister outside and exploring the outdoors, probably in the hope that we'd find some fairies too.

Although it’s easy to focus on the story behind the images, I believe that one of the most appealing things about them is the way they use photo manipulation to perfectly capture the beauty of nature. The fairies in the photos seem to dance next to a woodland stream, or stand on the branches of trees, or in a forest of flowers. The images capture the wonder and fantasy of the natural world, by looking at it through the eyes of a child. If the two girls managed to find such a magical world at the bottom of their own garden, it makes you wonder what you would find if you stopped to look hard enough in your own backyard. Children tend to explore their surroundings and look closer at the world than we do as adults, busy rushing around, heads in our phones. To a child, even the most mundane urban scene has a beauty and magic to it. 

This idea gave me a way to approach my project from another angle.

I decided that I could explore my topic by looking at the plants and trees of a normal neighbourhood through the filter of a child’s imagination, and in doing so seeing the magic and beauty that has been there all along. Frances and Elsie’s hoax also got me thinking about what their photos would look like today, in the age of photoshop. If the girls had access to the digital tools of the 21st century, would they have bothered with cardboard and pencils? Would their images have had the same magic? Would they still spark the imagination and capture that sense of wonder? I wanted to answer these questions by doing what the Cottingley girls had done before me, and creating a fantasy world within a few streets of my own house, in its average suburban neighbourhood. 

I decided to use the photos of figures that I had taken in the studio, and composite them into miniature natural environments as fairies.

muse a is in college and decides to become a stri,pper at an elite club to pay for her tuition. the club is run by this m.afia boss, muse b, who’s enchanted with her from the get-go and the feeling was mutual. so for the next year, on every friday night, muse b books a private dance from her for two hours, and muse a who has only been comfortable giving them to him and no one else, starts to look forward to it every time. she knows he’s dangerous but he doesn’t scare her like he probably should and every week the tension becomes thicker and thicker… i think it would b very cool to develop this and see what could happen when they eventually hook up. muse b doesn’t want to bring her into his world, not wanting for her to get hurt but the heart wants what it wants. 😈*

a plot about a college student on the verge of losing her scholarship. with a full schedule and no free time, she has no shot at finding a job. so in a last ditch attempt she puts herself on suga.rbabies.com and searches through suga.rdaddy.com. a week passed by. many blind meetings with ceos, doctors, lawyers, even a few actors. yet nothing pans out. one day, late at night. a message pops up. inside waiting is a message from her favorite professor. *

a single dad x kindergarten teacher plot where his kid is in love with the teacher, always talking about them when they get home, making them pictures and always raising their hand in class being the best student they can be. the father finds this adorable because the kid is so whipped by this teacher he’s never met due to work and the fact his mother is always picking them up. so, parent teacher night finally comes and it’s time for them to meet. and the dad realizes the reasons why his kid is so whipped in the first place.

plot: rich business man tries out a c.all girl (inexperienced and much younger) but they end up having A+++ s.ex (can be v rough bc he’s so stressed) so he ends up calling her up quite often and they grow attached to each other xcept there can be drama bc a) he’s married or engaged or something or b) he wants to keep them a secret or maybe even she tells him that she doesn’t date clients and aHHH yeah pls gimme

no but gimme a plot where the girl’s a mob boss’s daughter, and the boy is a cop fresh outta the academy and he doesn’t realize that the girl he’s been flirting with is the daughter of the guy he’s trying to get behind bars.

okay so um i need a plot where this like young precious innocent lil cinnamon roll of a girl somehow stumbles upon some kinda se.xy chatroom thing (that may or may not be p.rison/inm.ate related) and starts chatting with this older guy who’s in prison (bc he was in a ga.ng or dr.ug ring or something, nothing TOO crazy ok) and they spend like months chatting pretty soon he convinces her to send him pictures and he gives her like d.irty little ‘missions’ (like wear vib,rating panti.es to school and take nud.es in public places and stuff like that) and then he eventually gets out of pri.son and they meet but she’s still a vi.rgin and he’s spent months not getting any and like CAN I PLEASE JUST HAVE THIS  DEBAUCHERY

i want to have a plot where ballerina/bad boy and she has very strict parents and they force to dedicate her life to dancing which she agrees to until she meets a boy who s.mokes a lot, gets into a lot of fights, and always has a cocky smile on his face. but she doesn’t mind because he makes her feel like she isn’t someone’s doll anymore, like a normal person.

A chat with Kiki of Kiki’s House of Righteous Music in Madison, Wisconsin  (by Eric Eggleson)

A friend and I recently had the pleasure of attending a show at Kiki’s House of Righteous Music. It’s truly amazing what Kiki Schueler has put together in her basement (and in her backyard as well). I had heard about her shows, but I never got the chance to go to one. When Jason Ringenberg was scheduled; I knew I had to go. Think of a bunch of friends gathering together in someone’s basement listening to music you love. There are gig posters all over the walls from many great concert venues in the Midwest. And then, in walks a national recording artist who begins sharing his life and his music. Needless to say, we were amazed. Kiki welcomed us into her home and her love of music is obvious when you meet her. I asked her if she would answer a few questions for Dagger and she agreed.

When did Kiki’s House of Righteous Music start?

Back in 2005, I had just read an article about house concerts when my friend Tim Easton sent an email looking for show ideas in between Chicago and Minneapolis.  I cautiously offered, “you could play here…”  He immediately wrote back, “I was hoping you would say that!”

How do you choose artists?

It has to be someone I love.  I don’t book artists I haven’t seen.  I’ll do a show anytime someone I want to play can play.  Sometimes I contact them; sometimes they find me.

Which artist has played the most?

Jon Dee Graham.  He first played show #3 in 2007 with The Silos and has played a total of 23 times.  Although Robbie Fulks (18) and Jon Langford (21) are threatening for the lead.

What are some of your most memorable artist performances? 

The Baseball Project show after Scott McCaughey had recovered from a stroke.  It was their first show outside the Seattle area, and it is always surreal to have half of REM in my basement.  Robbie Fulks has brought some truly amazing musicians with him, and his shows are always transcendent.  Andre Williams with the GoldStars; he’s still the only artist to have changed his outfit for the encore.  The Figgs have played marathon thirty plus song shows, and no one is ever ready for them to stop.  Jon Langford and John Szymanski playing for a dozen people in the backyard last fall. This was the only live music anyone had seen in months.

Who would you like to perform?

Lou Barlow, Joe Ely, Dave Simonett, MC Taylor, Craig Finn, Bill Kirchen, John Darnielle, the list goes on, some more realistic than others.

How has Covid-19 affected you?

I watched a lot of streaming shows in the last year and a half, and it totally worked for me, so I didn’t miss live music as much as some people did.  I still went to work most days.  I missed doing the shows of course, but I was just as happy reading books and watching movies.  Turns out I might be an introvert, who knew?

How many shows have you lost because of it?

I think I had to cancel about fourteen.  Since I usually do thirty plus shows a year, it’s safe to say I lost at least that many.

What’s your day job?

I work at UW Madison as a researcher in a lab in the Biochemistry department.

You have a great situation happening, what suggestion would you give to help other people to start doing what you do? 

It never hurts to ask.  If there is someone you want to play, just ask. 

A good place to start is with Undertow (https://undertowshows.com/pages/about-undertow). They set up living room shows for a number of artists, and they make it really easy to do your first show by walking you through the how to’s.  Bonus, they take care of tickets.

For the show I went to, Jason said he gets all the ticket sales. Who pays for the sound guy? What’s in it for you?  

I’ve been very lucky to find sound people who volunteer their time in exchange for dinner and a few beers.  And of course, a great show.  For me, I get to see a band I love in my basement.

Have you had any backlash or bad situations with artists/neighbors?

Never anything bad with the artists, everyone has been great and very happy to be here.  Most of my neighbors think what I’m doing is cool.  In the early days, they would see all the cars, but no people inside, so I think they were happy to find out that I was having music in my basement and not something else.  There have been a few complaints about parking, but none about noise.

I loved the Sessions at McPike Park concert you set up in Madison with Chuck Prophet and Bonnie Whitmore. How did that come about? Do you do this kind of thing often because of your connections?

Bob Queen asked if I’d be interested in curating a night of the Sessions back in 2018, though I still don’t know what prompted him to ask me.  I think he was looking for someone with a different perspective.  This year was my third, and every show has been a blast.  I don’t do it often, just the Session once a year; for the most part, the basement is big enough for me.

Top Ten desert island discs? (If you were stuck on a desert island, what 10 albums would you HAVE to have with you?)

There’s only two I have to have- Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks and Chris Mills The Silver Line, three through ten probably change on a daily basis.

What are some of your favorite concert venues?  

The Hideout in Chicago, Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, The Turf Club in St Paul and Café Carpe in Ft. Atkinson.            

Favorite live shows? Bob Dylan, Robbie Fulks, Ha Ha Tonka, Dead Man Winter, and Hiss Golden Messenger.

My band T-shirt collection?  I don’t need to be remembered, I just want everyone to have a good time right now.

That is so true. Kiki’s love of music is something she has to share with other like-minded people. At first I thought it was the joy of finally seeing a live show because of Covid-19 cancelling so many concerts; but watching, fully masked, made me realize it’s the warmth Kiki’s shows brings to the music scene. My friend and I hope to go back soon. We missed Steve Wynn, but maybe we’ll catch him next time around.

Daydream

Summary: Felix shows Mason a pin-up calendar that the Detective just so happens to star in.

Pairing: Mason x Lucia Langford

Notes: This is day 6 of Wayhaven Week 2020 ( @otomefandomevents ). I decided to try Mason for a change. I got the inspiration from this ask.

Felix had hit the jackpot today. In his hand was no ordinary calendar. He had conveniently stumbled upon it while visiting the station, wanting to build more paper airplanes with Lucia.

Tina had been selling them in the front of the station, calling out to anyone who passed by. Not missing a chance to chat with the bubbly officer, he made a detour from his original plan.

“What are you selling there, beautiful?” Felix asked with a white smile that had Tina in a blushing and stuttering mess.

“Oh…I…um.” Her embarrassment only made Felix lean in closer, lithe body over the table as he soaked in her reaction. She nervously tucked a stray curl out of her face, composure just barely recovering. “The station is selling its fifth annual pin-up calendars,” Tina babbled, gesturing with hot pink nails to the colorful stacks beside him. “All the proceeds go to the local women’s shelter.”

“Are you in it?”

A smirk formed on Tina’s lips. “Of course!” She beamed, snatching the calendar on top of the stack and flipping to March. She held out the calendar for Felix to take and he was impressed. A picture of Tina dressed in booty shorts and a crop top laid sprawled across a wooden picnic table stared back at Felix.      

“You should call me the next time you plan a picnic,” he purred, throwing an amber wink for added effect.

A suggestive smile settled on her lips. “I might just take you up on that offer.”

This is certainly getting fun.

Glancing back down, curiosity filled Felix as he continued flipping through the rest of the calendar. His eyes lit up at the familiar woman on July.

Aww man. Mason is gonna love this!

In the photo was no other than their very own Lucia dressed in nothing but a cherry bikini lounging seductively on a donut floatie in the middle of a sparkling pool. Her lipstick matched the bright red of the cherries that decorated her bikini.

He turned his gaze back to the eager officer. “How much?”

Mason slowly inhaled the smoke from his cigarette, his thoughts drifting to Lucia as he sat on the plush sofa. It’s a habit that’s been happening too often these past few months, more than he would care to admit. The Detective has sure been a pleasant surprise. The way her warm lips trailed wet kisses down his-

Mason’s thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Felix’s loud humming, the approaching sound signaling the formation of a new headache.

“Guess what I found today?” Felix asked with sparkling eyes and a very wide grin that had Mason thinking he visited the zoo again.

Who was stupid enough to let him in again after he tried freeing the flamingos? 

“A brain.”

Felix’s grin dropped as he pursed his lips at the insult. “No, something better.” His grin returned again when he slammed down what was hidden behind his back that Mason hadn’t noticed onto the coffee table.

Mason extinguished his cigarette on the nearby ash tray before inspecting the cover photo with a shirtless man with his arms wrapped around a woman wearing a tight dress, both of them leaning back against the front of a silver hatchback that looked suspiciously like Lucia’s poor excuse of a car. “It doesn’t seem like you to get me another magazine for my collection.” His tone, questioning as he stared at the ever-growing smile on Felix’s face.

“Not a magazine, Mason. A calendar,” Felix corrected, tongue clicking. “Turn to July.”

Mason warily grabbed the calendar off the table and followed Felix’s instructions, uncertainty on his face at the possibility of another prank.

This is a welcoming surprise.

Mason’s fingers traced the curve of Lucia’s body as he licked his lips, dark thoughts filling his even darker mind.

The corners of his mouth lifted into a smirk. “Damn she is hot,” he said before releasing a whistle.

“Consider it a gift to help you cope with your constant daydreaming about our dear Detective,” Felix chuckled, mischievous glint in his eyes as he plopped down beside Mason.

Mason scoffed, setting the calendar on his lap as he leaned back on the sofa with his hands behind his head. “I don’t need to daydream when I still have the taste of her pus-“

“Don’t you dare continue that sentence!”

Angrily stomping towards them was Nate with a pointed finger at Mason, eyes narrowed and lips frowning in disapproval. “What are you two hooligans up to this time?”

Felix couldn’t contain his snickering as Mason shamelessly handed Nate the calendar. It only took a few seconds before Nate chucked the calendar back at Mason, who caught it with ease, and pinched his nose in exasperation.

“I can’t say I’m not surprised.” Nate sighed like the disappointed parent he is.  

“In her or in me?”

This earned another supply of chuckles from Felix who had slung an arm over Mason’s shoulders to support himself as his body was dying at the sly remark. Mason couldn’t help it himself, releasing deep chuckles while taking in the sight of a horrified Nate.

“I can’t deal with this anymore,” Nate said as he marched out of the living room, Mason’s comments making him want to wash his ears out with soap.
