WIP - clamshell box of my binding of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Preparing the boards
There was a lot of meticulous cutting involved. I tried to be as precise as possible and kept all the cut parts because I figured one of the difficult things might be to get all the long and slender parts on the case without getting any skew. So I glued one piece and used cut out parts for spacing.
I feel like the spaced design with black and white spaces (the ones to go and the ones to keep for this design) have appeal too though. So that might be an idea for another design.
One thing I learned with this design was. Check if you have a paper that works with what you're planning. I could have gone with one plain colour, but I wanted a pattern that kind of worked with the paper that was already on the book as well as sort of reflect the inside.
Turned out many did not... especially with the marbled papers it was often hard to discern the title.

wishing the switch was ACTUALLY as portable as nintendo likes to imagine it is because then taking it to school would be a lot more realistic and i'd probably be able to fit in more game time

Presenting: The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie VHS: Clamshell Edition!
Tumblr media
Okay, so I have been dying to share this project since I completed it last November, but I've been waiting until I was a little more active on my socials. And now I am!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was inspired by thecolinstein on instagram to make this. I found his version back in 2023 and I wanted to buy it, but then I thought, hey, I could just make my own how I want it! With a clamshell case! How hard could it be?
Very hard, as it turns out.
That's not to discourage anyone from trying themselves. There were just a lot of roadblocks unique to my own process. Like the fact that I went through, like, five tapes recording the video file because I thought they were bad tapes. Nope, it was my stupid "smart" tv trying to automatically adjust the aspect ratio that was making the picture black out periodically. And before I got a computer that DIDN'T take 1 million years to boot up, it was difficult to design the cover and labels too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the playback:
Yes, I did record it at (almost) full aspect ratio, not 4:3, but 1.85:1 because that's how I'd watch it (I didn't want cropping on certain scenes and I REALLY didn't want letterboxing). And those glitchy parts on CJ's face are from my phone's camera, not the recording itself (you have no idea the heart attack I had before I double-checked lol)
Now, obviously since there's nothing on the tape to say that this is just a fanmade product, I will NOT be recreating this VHS for sale, not like thecolinstein (he has disclaimers on his). I'm not sure of the legality of selling my version. My whole intent was to simply make it look like the real deal, like you could find this in a garage sale bargain pile and believe it might have once been widely distributed. Also, I cannot be bothered to try taping the video file again, you can't make me lol. This was just a passion project. But I do hope I've inspired someone else!

oh I would love to see your take on Albatross. I love your seawing designs a lot!!
thank you so much! Even if sandwings are my favorite, I think I have the most fun designing seawings!
Tumblr media
This is my redesign of Albatross - it took way longer than I expected, mostly due to a lack of planning which led to me needing to redo the drawing. I never really paid any attention to Albatross, and was happily surprised to see how complex his character really is - an animus haunted by guilt, he spends most of his life paying for a mistake from his childhood and is eventually driven to become the monster Lagoon tells him he is. I can't believe I just ignored him!!
I wanted Albatross' physical appearance to reflect how much his life revolves around Sapphire's murder by including a pattern which (subtly) resembles the curves on clamshells, which can be found on his arms/shoulder. furthermore, his claws/mouth are slightly red to mimic where Sapphire was hurt. His gills are drawn in red as well, but I was thinking more of the irritation that may come from spending too much time out of water when working on the summer palace. When it came down to coloring his tail, the red exists only to balance the design. His aquatic markings are dimmer than others I've designed because of a headcannon I have, where tribemates don't talk to him due to Lagoon's influence, and his flashes aren't used much as a result. Finally, I made the choice to give him yellow-green eyes to represent sickness and the slow poisoning of his soul.
Pertaining to his bird-like features, the design loosely uses albatross wing patterns, as well as including a beak-like snout and beady eyes.
Thank you so much for requesting a design, and thank you all for all of the support given to my last work! Please visit my blog if you're looking for your favorite's design, and don't be afraid to ask if they aren't there yet! I am open to taking even the most unrecognized of characters, as well as answering any other general questions you may have!
see you guys later (´꒳`)

That Foone post has me thinking about signifiers of age in robots. There could be obvious things like overall size and design, but at a certain point a general design language will be established (like how laptops converged to a general clamshell design)
The condition of a chassis wouldn’t be reliable— easy to swap and upgrade. Plus, there would probably be a whole market for vintage and beat to hell body panels to give themselves a rugged look (the ripped denim of robots would be scuffed paint)
The easy tell would be the ports
What ports someone did or didn’t have would be a clear sign of when they were originally built. There would likely be some level of taboo around your ports being visible.
Displaying your ports freely would be for the young. Flaunting the latest connection protocols. LED rings lighting up around a socket
So upgrading your ports would be like getting cosmetic surgery. Have solid build of a good old model A10 with the ports of the latest Z-5 line
Hiding that they still have an RS-232. Having literal compatibility issues.
The ultimate intimacy of letting someone look inside the chassis and see how old you really are and exactly how you were created
