Gift fic for: @clementinelemontime, @thegoldenhigh, @raffings, three fellow Maiza fans-in-arms. Specifically, this is a thank-you gift for all the wonderful art you wonderful artists have shared with us over the years—the Maiza and Baccano! fanart, but also your original art. I am truly grateful for both the fanart and art alike.
Summary: In time, he would be potential unfulfilled—wasted, squandered, reviled—in time, he would be Aile of the Rotten Eggs, the upstart, the stripling, the protégé and mentor, the alchemist, the contaiuolo, a single child by his own failings (always, his failings). By choice he would someday be Maiza again—and thereafter Maiza Avaro without a choice, he and his legacy bound to his name sempiternal. In time, he might learn to live with it.
For now, Maiza's future is yet writ in stone. For now, he is four; seventeen; twenty-one. For now, he survives.
An imagining of Maiza's life leading up to Summer 1705, as experienced through others' eyes.
Word Count: Around 24,200 words.
Notes: This is the first fic I have published in over a year. The last was The Honeypot Affair’s final chapter (published on October 1, 2018). It is not entirely coincidental that my first fic and last published fic are both Maiza-centric; this fic is at least two years old. How am I so sure? Where’s the proof? Well, if a couple paragraphs sound familiar to you, that’s because I posted them as snippets on Tumblr as early as February 2018. I was writing the fic on and off for months. Missed all my personal deadlines for getting it published. Nevertheless, it’s published now.
Thank you for reading. Feedback/critique etc. is, ‘as always’, appreciated. This fic is technically succeeding an old Maiza fic I wrote for thegoldenhigh in 2016, but that fic is not mandatory whatsoever for comprehension. He Survives, As Always stands fine on its own, and, one hopes, possesses finer prose than my 3+ year-old fic.
The fic’s end-notes contain some ‘behind the scenes’ info and historical notes, but far from all of them; AO3 limits end-notes to 5000 characters.
In which Dick experiences the “stages of loss” non-consecutively, like so many others. Dick is encouraged by his family to see a doctor to aid him through in his grief-stricken down spiral. His therapist is fresh but well-known and highly recommended by those in his field as well as those who have sought him out for help. Upon meeting him, the man appears fine; he’s kind-hearted, patient, resourceful with his work and he seems to be helping. But Slade seems to have his suspicions not only about the man’s credentials, but his methods and intentions as well.
Or
Dick relapses into grief and his new therapist seems shady to Slade.

I made an nsfw side blog (for art) if anyone is interested... It’s not all the way out together yet but I did only post one thing from there so far. It’s mostly gonna have like nsfw things and horror art...
One of my few contributions to inktober... Not sure if anyone's noticed, sorry if you have, but I haven't been posting lately. I'm having some personal troubles in school so it kinda leaves me really demotivated to do the things I like to do, like drawing, and I've just found it in my heart to draw this weekend...
