setting the past (part one/ prologue)

synopsis: you coach a volleyball team, one of the best in the country known for having mostly recruited players. you take pride in the fact that you have led your team to win a national championship title. And with the news of the rising team karasuno, your interest is piqued, mainly because that was your old school. you had known that they were nicknamed the "fallen crows" and such, so hearing about their fast improvement you decide you want to see it for yourself. you call up the school and takeda picks up. you organize a practice match for later that week.

but what you don't realize is that their coach is your highschool ex.

a/n: woohoo finally finished part one of idk how many. i haven't written since my wattpad days and i have so many good ideas for this fic so i hope y'all enjoy this. i just need to like collect my thoughts and put them in order because thinking about the plot my brain goes like 100 mph but then when i actually have to write it, suddenly im illiterate.

Once practice concluded, and the clatter of equipment being stowed away subsided, the Karasuno boys formed a line in front of Ukai and Takeda, anticipating any last-minute announcements before dispersing.

".. and make sure you're eating well and getting enough rest. That's all I have to say for today," Ukai stated firmly, his arms crossed as he surveyed the team.

Takeda cleared his throat, drawing the attention of the eager players. "Yes, indeed. I know this is short notice, but the coach from Kozue Highschool reached out for a practice match later this week, and I accepted."

"HUH?" The boys chorused in a mix of surprise and excitement. A practice match against the reigning national champions was unexpected, to say the least.

"Didn't they win nationals last year?" Daichi questioned, his brows furrowing with intrigue.

"Did they? I'm not sure but you know more than I do." Takeda replies with a smile. "But apparently, their coach is an alumna of Karasuno," He glances at Ukai. "Y/N, I believe? Do you know her? She might be from the same graduating class as you"

Ukai's reaction to your name didn't escape notice. He knew exactly who you were—the pride of Japan's under-19 women's team and, to add a twist, his high school sweetheart.

"Yeah, I know her," Ukai replied, turning to the players. "That means this won't be an easy match. Not only because Kozue is a national champion, but also because Y/N is coaching them. She was- is one of the best womens volleyball player. So think expect nothing less from her team. Be prepared to face some formidable opponents."

"WOW! A NATIONAL CHAMPION TEAM! I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY WITH THEM!" Hinata exclaimed, his excitement palpable. "I won't lose to them!"

"Yeah, me neither," Ukai thought to himself, his expression unreadable.

After practice, as the Karasuno third years made their way home, Suga couldn't help but bring up the tension surrounding Ukai and you.

"So, Y/N is definitely Coach's ex, right?" Suga prodded, casting a knowing glance at his companions.

"Oh, absolutely," they agreed. They continued to discuss the possibilities as they walked home.

Ah, the history between you and Ukai. It was a tale of high school romance, filled with shared lunches, mutual support at games, and stolen moments in the clubroom. But graduation day shattered those dreams, as Ukai chose to explore college life, leaving you heartbroken and struggling to move on.

But some wounds never truly heal. Ukai remained a lingering presence in your thoughts, the memory of him etched into your heart as your first love, your first heartbreak.

Little did you know the storm brewing ahead as you prepared for the practice match against your alma mater, Karasuno Highschool.

The bus ride back to Miyagi was quiet, your team fast asleep behind you. As the bus slowed to a halt, you felt a surge of excitement—the familiarity of your hometown, the anticipation of facing your old school.

Karasuno High. The memories flooded back as you recognized the school's facade. Your stomach churned with excitement and nerves as you led your team off the bus.

"...twelve, thirteen, fourteen, yep! That's everyone," you counted, gently tapping your players as they stumbled out of the bus, still half-asleep.

"Why are we playing at a school two hours away again?" Haru, your team captain, yawned.

"Because, one, I used to go here back in the day, and two, I heard they're really good now. I'm excited to see what they look like. It'll be good practice," you explained, walking into the school towards the old gym where you spent multiple late nights after practice. you hear the familiar sound of volleyballs hitting the ground grow louder the more you walk toward the ajar door.

But what you didn't anticipate was a volleyball hurtling towards your face. Instinctively, you raised your arms, but it never struck you. A familiar figure stood beside you, his presence startling.

Ukai Keishin.

You were at a loss for words. It couldn't be him. Yet, there he was, saving you from a potential injury.

"Hinata, you can't be receiving like that!" Ukai's voice cut through the air, snapping you back to reality. His eyes met yours, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.

"What are you doing here?" you managed to ask, your tone sharp, eyes narrowed.

"What does it look like, Y/N?" he retorted with a teasing smirk. "Same reason you're here, I suppose."

You couldn't believe your luck—running into your high school ex at a crucial moment. Hoping to avoid any further interaction, you turned away and made your way to your team.

"Thank you for having us here," you bowed to the Karasuno team, your voice steady despite the turmoil within. As you started stretching with your team, your mind raced, your gaze occasionally drifting to Ukai. Your usual composure faltered, and your team couldn't help but notice.

This practice was shaping up to be far more challenging than you had hoped.

You expected him to arrive late, or even forget about the little date you wanted to have with him at the park. Yes, it's weird to have picnic dates so late on the night but you really were hoping to spend more time with him.

Your gaze fell to the bouquet of white camellias. Which is said to represent an innocent love, just as if it were an infant's love. It's also said it symbolizes feelings of esteem, gratitude and adoration.

Thus being only a portion of all your feeling towards Ukai, who's been your companion through bright and dark, an escape from routine in any capable form the word encages.

Watching him at some of his trainings, as a student and as a teacher has made you feel really proud of him and the way he cares and observes every little detail on everyone is fascinating.

His way of cheering you up or making you laugh through tears, it's all precious to you. So you thought of a way to make him see it.

He did arrive a little late than agreed, but it didn't matter to you.

Rising from the blanked spread on the grass to your feet with the flowers on your hands behind your back, you smiled brightly at him.

"Sorry for the delay" he said panting a little, just to try and wrap his arms around you to envelop you in a hug. But you had to stop him.

"Close your eyes for a moment please" you said, watching him carefully as he raise a brow in suspicion but obeyed.

You pulled out the bouquet to smile once again "Here! For you!".

He opened his eyes and saw the posy of white nature being bathed on the moon's light, just as your closed eyes from the big smile that formed by and for him and only him.

After you explained to him what your research for a perfect present made you buy, through some home-cooked meals prepared hours before your cute reunion, Ukai couldn't help but laugh at your innocence and effort for the perfect date you were living right now.

keishin’s kinda actually really strong

(this headcanon is based of the scene in the anime when he lifts up a whole fucking bench to keep hinata from ramming his head into it (in the manga he just moves a collapsable chair, which is still some really impressive reflexes))

he can just decide to pick up a metal bench and moved it out of the way really quickly with little to no warning

it’s from years and years of helping around and running sakanoshita and running around moving boxes

it also comes from growing up with ukai snr, keishin’s been active since he first started hanging out at his grandpa’s

you can’t really tell at first glance bc he only wears sweatshirts and tracksuits and his muscle isn’t really obvious

but he’ll occasionally just do some small feat of strength like it’s nothing and everyone around him is suddenly very surprised

If HQ was a story about the coaches instead of the players, Keishin Ukai would have been the Hinata of the story.

Young, talented, the right ideas, but inexperienced. In the need of help, quickly finds friends who support him and believe in him, and what eventually gives him the ultimate motivation to strive for growth: provoked pride by someone he considers his rivial but who also becomes his biggest ally who he likes and respects and loves to work with but is still determined to beat in the future.

You’d shot down the idea of tents, instead finding a cabin to rent from a summer camp that wasn’t currently operating. The school somehow agreed to fund this, no doubt because of Takeda’s persistent begging.

This is how you found yourself, Ukai, and Takeda packing away luggage into the back of a bus while Karasuno’s entire men’s volleyball team piled inside. You love the team and you love the side of Ukai that they bring out, but this was not the way you wanted to spend your weekend. They’re lovely boys, and insanely talented on the court, so you suppose that this could’ve gone worse. However, after an hour and a half of driving, you begin to doubt that fact.

Somehow, a group of the boys had convinced themselves that there would be bears on the route that you were taking, and that there were imminent bears around every corner. You were sitting up front with Keishin, so you weren’t witnessing the unfolding chaos, but you heard “BEARS! BEARS! BEARS! BEARS! Takeda sits in one of the many lawn chairs surrounding your now large pile of wood. You ignite the starter pieces and sit beside him as the flames slowly swallow the rest of your gatherings.

“I’m glad it’s you.” Takeda says.

“What do you mean?”

“You can handle him. It’s abundantly clear that he feels safe, comfortable, and confident with you by his side. You’re so good for him.”

You smile letting the warmth from the fire wash across your face. “Thank you.”

After the boys had had their smores and were dutifully in bed, though doubtfully asleep, you, Ukai, and Takeda sat by the fire sipping beers that Ukai had stashed in his suitcase.

“I thought that that was too big for one weekend.” You say, leaning your head against his chest. The two of you were under a blanket in one of the wooden deck chairs with you across Keishin’s lap, legs swung over the arm of the chair. He has his arms wrapped around you, one hand rubbing your back absentmindedly while the other held his beer.

There’s a crash from inside, accompanied by what sounds like shouts mixed with laughter. “On it.” Takeda says, standing up from his spot and heading into the cabin.

“Thank you.” Keishin says to Takeda, then repeats more softly to you.

“For being here. For supporting me. For being mine. For being you.”

“Thank you.

“For what?”

“For letting me.”

He smiles and kisses your head, switching his beer to his other hand so he can tilt your chin up, proceeding to kiss your forehead, nose, and then lips. Admittedly, the two of you get a little more carried away in your kiss than you should’ve when you’re just outside a cabin filled with teenage boys, as evidenced by the childish giggling followed by Takeda’s voice ushering the guilty parties back to their bunks.

“I guess it’s time for bed?” You offer.

“Not yet. Stay with me a little longer.” Keishin replies, kissing you sweetly again. When he pulls back you lean your head back against his chest. When the fire has gone out and you started to shiver, one of the third years on the team had brought you a blanket. When they went inside and you were still chilly, your fiancé beckoned you to sit in his lap instead. His warmth felt so comfy that you’d hardly noticed Ukai telling Takeda where to find his beer stash, and you hardly noticed Takeda leave. Now, the warmth and comfort that your lover brings is lending itself to how sleepy you are. It doesn’t help that Ukai has resumed rubbing your back. It isn’t long until you’re peacefully starting to doze off against his chest while he looks up at the clear sky and stars overhead. As he starts speaking, the rumble of his voice is just enough to stir you awake to hear what he has to say.

The fic: a canon-adjacent and canon-compliant take on (some of) the events in the series, but focused on the relationship between Takeda/Ukai, these baby adults who have somehow accidentally co-adopted 14 chaotic teens.

There's fake dating, nerding out about books, soft boyfriends being super soft and domestic, dating/married even if they don't realize it, and a backstory involving writing your phone number in the back of a book, lending it to a hot stranger, and somehow running into them seven years later.

In that time, he reviews the store inventory, decides to implement a new organization system for the frozen foods, and even washes the windows. It's a slow couple of days, okay? 

He literally just finishes throwing GunGun bars at a couple of punks from the volleyball team - the one with the shaved head catches the protein bar in his teeth, what the hell is Take-chan teaching them - when the store phone starts ringing. 

"Lo, Sakanoshita Market." 

"Ukai-kun!" Take-chan exclaims. He sounds breathless and excited, as if he's been eager to talk to Keishin all day, which is kinda adorable and - weird, Keishin corrects himself, weird, and not adorable, and definitely not a little bit charming. 

"You again," Keishin sighs, as if he's got about fifty million other things that he could be doing with his time, instead of re-reading One Piece. 

And then later, after Keishin's ass is well and truly Trapped:

"Er, thanks," Takeda says, flushing.  "I, ah, as you can see, I… I have a lot of books." 

"Do I need to stage an intervention, Sensei?" 

Takeda scratches the back of his head. "My mother was a librarian," he says, laughing a little. "So I come by it honestly." 

Keishin finds himself squinting at a silver flask resting between a bunch of cookbooks. There's writing on it in English, in fancy Gothic lettering, and he manages to just make out Will suck d- before Takeda suddenly materializes there, his smile very bright. 

"Hope you don't mind red pepper, there's a lot of it in the yakisoba!" Takeda says, his voice a bit higher than usual. "We should eat!"
