the gorgug-porter conversation is interesting to me because like. yea for the overwhelming majority of the conversation porter’s being shitty & trying to fit gorgug into a box that gorgug just does not fit into by trying to make gorgug’s relationship with his rage more focused on the aggression aspect of it. but then there’s also this specific thing that brennan brought up again in the ap, which is that gorgug’s relationship with his rage is wholly “this is a tool i use to protect my friends.” which isn’t a bad thing! but that’s his Whole relationship with it, & gorgug seems to place next to no value on his rage in relationship to himself. which is problematic, because it’s first & foremost his rage.

being raised in a household with a sort of toxic positivity largely meant that, whether or not it was his parents’ intention, gorgug internalized the message that more traditionally “negative” emotions such as anger are the wrong response to something. part of the reason he prioritizes his artificing is probably because it’s “fixing” things. in comparison to being a barbarian, which gorgug associates with “breaking” things. good vs. bad behavior, in his eyes.

it’s a totally unacceptable bar to measure a 16 y/o by, but i do think part of porter’s reasoning for not letting gorgug multiclass is him recognizing that gorgug generally does not value anger as a valid emotional response to something, at the very least for himself. & that directly conflicts with what being a barbarian is, because whether you like it or not, that rage is what fuels you. but again, barring a kid from pursuing something they deeply care about in part (not entirely, porter has a lot of more bullshit reasons) because of their fundamental values & world outlook is crazy.

so yes, 98% of porter’s reasoning is pretty shitty, immature, rife with a toxic view that there’s only one proper way to access rage, & generally not a good thing to do as a teacher, but also within that reasoning is the 2% of ‘there is a fundamental part of yourself that you only value if you can use it to take care of other people & you need to accept that as something that can take care of you, too.’ but that’s something to discuss with a therapist or a guidance counselor, not something that should hugely impact gorgug’s academic future.

So @kacievvbbbb asking about modern AU headcanons had me revisiting my 'modernised' MiShanks AU I thought up a couple months ago.

I call it 'modernised' because it is more of a medium modern AU, where I keep much of the base OP lore and history, but shrink the 'active' world down to just a few islands. The overall tech level and societal developments are much closer to what we have now and I do away with most of the political plot. I haven't yet decided if Devil Fruits still exist, but if they do, they are much more rare and are kind of a thing of legend most people don't believe in. Only very select few people would know about them and the curse associated with them.

So lets get into it, I've got plenty of thoughts on Mihawk, Shanks and how their relationship plays together in a more modern world. (And because Rosinante is also one of my favourites, and I can't seem to not smush them all together, there is a CoraMiShanks bit at the end too.)

- Mihawk -

Basic weaponry is a bit more in line with modern expectations in this AU, but that will never ever stop Mihawk from being a swords guy. Mihawk is the authority on fencing, especially in historical context. He's basically got a PHD in swords, identifying them, maintaining them, using them. He's filthy rich, not just because he won every fencing tournament there is, but also because he straight up inherited that half maintained castle outside of town along with stupid amounts of money from an uncle everyone thought already died decades before Mihawk received his testament.

These days Mihawk only competes in the highest level tournament once a year to defend the title (his 'rivalry' with Shanks makes the news every time) and otherwise spends his time at home, reading, drinking, occasionally taking small sailing trips with his beloved Hitsugibune, and of course training his swordsmanship. Everyone thinks he's just living it up big in Kuraigana castle, but the people in town know that he just wants to raise his kids in peace.

Where did the kids come from? No one knows. They're definitely not his though. Anyway, turns out that Mihawk is really good with kids, so it takes barely a couple years for the whole town to load off their kids with him during holidays and days off school. (Look, Zeff runs a busy kitchen, and as much as Sanji tries to help, he's still too young for the holiday rush. Garp has to leave on Marine assignments at the most random times, and his bum of a son has vanished to who knows where years ago, and the grandkids are friends with Zoro and Sanji anyway and can do with burning out their energy running around the woods behind the castle. Bellemère has to leave on those assignments with Garp most of the time, so Nami joins the fray while Nojiko mostly plays with Perona. Mihawk usually leaves the teen girls be on their own, especially since Robin showed up a while ago to join them [she seems to stay on her own, and Mihawk keeps an eye on her in case she needs additional help, but Crocodile seems to have that sorted already]. Usopp's mom is still sick, and she's grateful to know her son is out there having fun with his friends while she tries the next medicine with horrible side effects.)

The kids love Mihawk. Mihawk loves the kids too and to much of his dismay, the kids know it. He is a figure of authority to them, but also a person of trust, who they can approach with problems and worries when their usual parental figure is unavailable or out of reach. Given that Mihawk is pretty much always around, he begrudgingly accepts his new job as free childcare provider for the town (Garp tried to pay once. They all realised very quickly they get much farther by paying in favours, food, or doing little odd jobs because that old castle always needs something done).

Mihawk promised to teach Ace and Sabo to sail this summer, and with Luffy insisting to bounce around them, he already plans on doing more swimming and child fishing than actual sailing.

- Shanks -

Shanks is still a pirate, but it's all on a much smaller scale. He's still got the 'Red Emperor' epithet, but his reputation is much more Robin Hood of the seas. The Red Force gets into small tussles with other pirates more often than the Marines, and really, as long as they have food and alcohol on board they are all perfectly fine just sailing and enjoying their freedom. No one ever knows where the Red Force is at any given time, but they are known to show up when natural disasters strike, not to plunder the remains, but to help the people rebuild long before the Marines get around to offer their help (once the Marines show up on the horizon the Red Force clears out, a couple shots are exchanged, none of them ever hit). Garp tried to yell them into joining the Marines more than once, really Shanks could even stay captain and keep his ship and crew, he just needs to fly the Marine flag, but they all simply laugh and wave as they go off again to who knows where.

However, there is one week every year, where everyone knows exactly where the Red Force will be. Shanks won't ever miss his chance to duel Mihawk in the grand fencing tournament a couple islands over from Mihawk's home. As opposed to Mihawk, who has his fixed position as defending champion, Shanks fights his way through the other contenders every year. He leans into the pirate reputation, taunting opponents, refusing protective gear, tiptoe-ing the line to breaking the rules. The people love to hate him, it's a spectacle every time. The grand finale inevitably is a duel between Mihawk and Shanks, even after Shanks lost his arm (he sat out for a year and people thought that was the end. They were very relieved when Shanks made his over the top entrance again the year after).

They have long abandoned the actual fencing rules and equipment during the finale. People clap and scream when Mihawk steps on stage carrying Yoru, the black blade just as legendary as his own reputation. Shanks never fails to grin and deliver a witty one liner (the people's boo is part of the performance) and then they lunge. Watching that fight is exhilarating. No protective gear, real blades, and two absolute masters going at each other with a force that would leave less competent fighters with the gravest of wounds. It's every bit as real as it is a performance. Everyone knows Mihawk will win before they even start, and the people can recognise a small collection of moves that they build in every time, the more flashy and wide swipes that could easily be punished but never are. It's not simply about Mihawk winning and Shanks losing, it's about witnessing a piece of history being brought back to life right in front of their eyes.

The fencing tournament has always been held within the context of the summer solstice, and with Mihawk and Shanks putting on their show its become a part of a bigger festival that focusses on celebrating history and old rites, the origins of which aren't always known anymore. Every year after the finale they throw a huge feast, traditional food all over, as historically accurate to a long past pirate era as it can get (Mihawk makes sure of it, that history PHD has to be good for something), dressing up accordingly is very much encouraged. Shanks and Mihawk keep carrying their blades and play up their daring villain and chivalrous hero act and no one thinks twice about drinking with the Red Hair Pirates (they have amazing stories to tell). Usually Mihawk ends up in the middle of a group of kids and answers all kinds of history questions, all professor like, but in his full on historical get up. Shanks catches a glimpse of him and sighs dreamily and all the people he's jokingly been flirting with and threatening to kidnap as part of his role know that they're talking to a very much taken man. They enjoy his company anyway and talk to him about what it is like to raise a kid out at sea as they watch Perona and Uta tease Zoro in the distance.

What people don't know, is that the Red Force winters. Pretty much everyone aside from a volunteer skeleton crew leaves the ship for home during the winter months.

No one in town mentions to outsiders that the Red Emperor stays with the Strongest Swordsman up in Kuraigana castle. Why would they? They're great with the kids. And Uta singing with Brook during the Baratie winter solstice celebration sells out the house every time (the townsfolk get a cheeky 50% off that day, it's a community event after all [except for Mihawk. His filthy rich ass can pay double and wouldn't notice {he does pay double. He does notice. He does not care}]).

- Rosinante & Law -

Because I can't help myself and I love thinking about Rosinante together with MiShanks, this story's active events that would make up a proper fic make it a CoraMiShanks story, which starts with Cora-san and Law arriving in town. (Rosinante is genuinely a situational mute in this one, and Law's illness is a bit less horrifying, and potentially cured/managed with medicine.) They're on assignment from Doflamingo who heard that there's a spot that has gone unfilled in the island's underworld and wants to take full advantage of the opportunity to weasel into Crocodile's operations.

Little does Doffy know that: a) Corazón accepted the assignment so he could get away from him; b) Corazón insisted on taking Law because he's still working on getting Law's illness cured; [c) {depending on if Devil Fruits exist} Corazón may have secretly taken the Ope Ope no Mi on his way out;] d) Dracule Mihawk personally checks out every newcomer in town and seems to know much more than he reasonably should; e) Dracule Mihawk loves kids and bonds with Rosinante in a single meeting that included him pulling Law out of a lake; f) gods damned Dracule Mihawk directly protects Crocodile's operations in a infuriating 'someone will do it so I pick the smallest evil' mindset and Crocodile is so damn smug about it; g) fucking Dracule Mihawk decides to keep Rosinante and Law under his protection; h) and WHERE DID THE FUCKING RED EMPEROR COME FROM???

Doffy is seething at his plans foiled. Crocodile laughs at him, tells him to go pound sand and uses the opportunity to poach a couple of Doffy's operatives. Doffy has no choice but to retreat and plot his vengeance for later.

Was rewatching Phil’s QSMP streams, specifically Deathduo streams (because they never got to see each other after the reset and qMissa doesn’t know his family went to Rose’s sanctuary and did a long sleep ueueue), and what better place than to start with that first day he and Missa had Chayanne? Something I noticed when they gave him a sword and he went after Spreen was, lightning stuck. On a sunny day. Multiple times. On Chay. Or rather, close by him and towards his targets, Charlie and Mariana being one of them, when he one time was looking down below them where they lived at the time and lightning kept striking, as if Chayanne was trying to hit them with it. So… that’s where this AU came from. Yes, I am actually gonna write this out into a proper story. Have a title and starting sentence and everything. Pls don’t steal this, it’s one of my babies. I have so many wips in my folder lmao. Anyway, happy reading!

Chayanne has the power of lightning at his disposal. He doesn’t know it’s not normal until he’s adopted by his dads, Philza and Missa, and sees their reactions to him summoning lighting at Tio Spreen when he hit him the first day. They don’t know it was him, the men too stressed about being thrust into parenthood to really think about what happened, probably chucking it up to the weird things happening on the island. He sees how scared they are for him when lightning strikes close to him, to protect himself, how protective they get and fuss to get him home, that he realises it might be better if he just… keeps it in. Doesn’t let them know it was actually him.

After a few months of having been adopted by his dads, he slowly works up the courage to tell his Dad Phil about what he can do. Chay’s a little warrior, after all, and he wants to protect his siblings the best he can, and his powers would help him with that goal, surely Dad Phil, the seasoned warrior he is, will recognise this and not be scared of Chay, or start hating him, right?

And then the binary entity starts attacking his siblings who still have two lives. And he realises something. The monster summons lightning storms every time it attacks. Lightning striking with too much precision to be a coincidence. That revelation scares him. He’s too much like the creature that is a danger to his siblings. If he tells Dad Phil now, surely the man will start despising him. Everyone will, even Lullah, once they know because Dad Phil will surely tell them about the monster living under his roof.

So Chayanne keeps it in.

Keeps a big secret that no one knows about, not even his other half, his little Lullah. He doesn’t want her to be scared of him. What if he actually was a code, just disguised as a kid, and that was the reason he could summon lightning? He would be such a danger to everyone!

But keeping it in for too long serves him no good. He starts sleeping more. Sometimes days at a time with no one able to wake him up. Dad Phil is worried. He doesn’t know what’s happening with his son. Chayanne doesn’t either. Not until he wakes up groggily, alone, during the afternoon while Dad Phil is out with Lullah doing her tasks. There’s static in the air, and when he looks at his hands after rubbing sleep from his eyes, little electric lines appear between his fingers and suddenly he’s wide awake.

Keeping his powers in, burying them deep, made them bottle up. He hurts. He can’t keep them in for much longer. He has to leave!

And he runs away.

When he’s far enough away from where anyone lives or has little bases, he lets go.

One massive lightning bolt summons on him and many smaller ones strike the ground around him.

It doesn’t hurt, not really. Not anymore. But the buildup that just got released was too much for his little body and he passed out from the exertion.

The rest of the islanders see the lightning in the distance and start bringing their children home to safety. Lightning equals code attack, after all. Better safe than sorry.

Every child is accounted for. Well, at least until Philza returns home with his daughter and sees an empty bed where his son was sleeping when they left that morning. He frantically looks around the bunker, the kitchen, and the side room. Nothing. No sign of Chayanne.

Immediately he goes outside again, making sure Lullah stays inside, worried as she is, and pulls out his communicator.

He asks around if Chayanne may have gone to them after he woke up sometime during the day, but with no luck. No one has seen the little boy all day. They ask if everything’s alright. Phil doesn’t want to worry them and doesn’t want to fear the worst. He says they are just playing hide and seek. They’re not.

Phil looks into the distance where all the lightning came from and steels himself. If the code has his son, he is going on a rampage. The Angel of Death will take to the skies once more.

But first, he needs proof that something’s happened. So, he goes in the direction the lightning struck. No rain happened, just the lightning, which is odd. Something at the back of his mind tucks at that, something familiar that he can’t place. There was also no ping in the communicators that someone was downed or killed, so Chayanne has to still be alive.

What is happening?

Eventually, he arrives at a clearing far away. Scorch marks litter the ground, but his focus is solely on the biggest one. Because in the middle of that, lies his son.

Phil runs to his side, listening for his heartbeat, and quickly finding it. It’s not beating as strongly as it usually is. Phil is worried. What happened to his son?

Phil wants to bring him home, but it is far, and Phil doesn’t know what happened, and doesn’t know if moving him would hurt him, so he stays. He gently combs through the little boy’s hair with his taloned hand as if he were grooming delicate feathers.

He stays like that for hours, just waiting until his boy would wake up. He shoots a message to Fit asking if he could check on Lullah and if she has gone to bed, saying something came up that he had to take care of, so he had to leave in a hurry. Fit complies easily with his request, his old friend not even questioning him about the urgent matter.

Eventually, Chayanne wakes up. And he is not alone. He instantly recognises the hand combing through his hair and chokes up.

“Chayanne? Are you awake?” his dad whispers hesitantly, and Chayanne just starts sobbing, launching himself into his Dad Phil’s arms, hiding his face in the man’s chest. “Oh, Chayanne. What happened?” Dad Phil’s voice is so gentle as he hugs him, trying to soothe the crying boy, too gentle than anyone should be to a monster.

Chayanne just shakes his head. He knows he’ll have to answer his dad’s questions eventually, but he is selfish. He wants comfort, warmth and kindness just this one last time until his dad realises what a monster he is.

What the boy doesn’t know is how his dad won’t care about what he can do. He doesn’t care that it is similar to the creatures that kill children. Because that is not how Chayanne is. His powers don’t make him a monster. Actions do. And Chayanne would never do anything that would make him a monster.

But all that is for later. For now, a father is comforting his son.

Something something the fact that in the end, Jon’s downfall to his plan came all because he forgot about his lighter. The all-seeing all-knowing conduit of the apocalypse and destined pupil of the eye failed to complete his plan because he forgot. about. his. lighter.

Something something maybe that was another string in Annabelle’s plan. She made Jon a smoker, made his ex girlfriend a smoker, gave him that reminder that he had that lighter so he’d go have a cigarette and she hoped Georgie would join him. Girl. Nah no way.

Something something maybe Georgie knew deep down it would be best for the others to have the lighter. They know Jon. They do. Or maybe it was just coincidence or the pulling of puppet strings.

The Kids Ain’t Alright

okay I started reading Dungeon Meshi the other day only because I liked those character sheets. it's good and fun so far, I'm on chapter 37 and very invested. I thought it was gonna be just slice of life (because it was for like the first 20 chapters or so), but now there is a plot, and I like it both ways. it has kind of a slow start even for the slice of life stuff: not like it's bad, I was just unsure whether it was going to move past "enjoyable" for the first couple chapters. but then it went from enjoyable to deeply charming and now it's gone to exciting while still pretty darn charming. without knowing the author, I can confidently say she's a giant nerd. this is a work that would be impossible to create unless you were a person who is great at drawing with intense special interests in classic fantasy RPGs and biology/ecology. which sounds very specific but thank goodness because that's what makes it good. it feels like it comes from a place of love.

Boggart

Because at 14, everything feels so long and permanent. Especially when the future is uncertain.

Honestly this was inspired by this post asking about your MC's boggart. I always figure that my MC's would fall into a more similar vein like Hermione where her boggart represents more of a symbol/idea.

When read up on reddit on Hermione's boggart was Professor McGonagall, someone pointed out saying that it's more of a symbolic thing when you look into it under a deeper light. With Professor McGonagall saying she failed all her classes, Hermione could get expelled from Hogwarts and get her wand snap. Essentially denying her from the wizarding world.

Since Hermione -a muggleborn witch- wants to belong in the wizarding world (when the muggle world rejected her), she is trying to prove that she deserve to belong in the wizarding world through her grades and by being at the top of her class. Hermione failing her classes could risk her getting kicked out and getting her wand snap. The McGonagall boggart failing her is symbolic of her true fear - belonging no where.

While Hermione a girl trying to belong somewhere and doesn't want to be kicked out, Iñaki is a girl who's afraid that she'll never go back home.

What's a more permanent way of saying you aren't returning to your home country by getting a passport (symbolizing that you got naturalized) of your adopted country? More about Iñaki "MC" Martinez Cariaga

You need to buy this 70 dollar textbook, and all papers turned in must be in APA format with a title page even if they're only 500 words long. I will not accept late assignments.
