IF YOU WANNA DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OR THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH MAKING COMICS?

OK it's been long enough. It's time to answer this. It's looooong so here's a cut:

The absolute first thing I do when I'm making a comic is doodle the stupidest worst thumbnails with a fat sharpie on a sticky note. I try to keep in mind the dialogue and where that goes (about 1-2 sentences per balloon, and I try to keep the balloons to a minimum. this is a personal preference to keep things readable online. you'll see profesh comics with more dialogue all the time.)

Something to keep in mind while doodling these is the line of action that the boxes will flow through! You'll want to read (unless its a manga) from left to right, top to bottom. That means you'll want the boxes to draw the eye that way. Here's an example of what I mean that I pulled from google.

You'll also want to keep in mind where your characters are in the boxes as well! Comics follow the same principle as movies/film when it comes to crossing the 180. (aka, you'll want to keep your characters on the same side of the "screen" for every "shot") Here's a great tutorial from someone way more qualified than me!

And here's an example from Adventure Time:

In fact a LOT of comic knowledge is improved by knowledge of storyboarding and shot composition! They're really similar in a lot of ways, but comics have the freedom to switch up the size of the "shot" which is a lot of fun. I spend a ton of time looking at animation frames, movie shots, and other professional comics to see how they frame their characters and move between scenes/shots.

Here's some tips for Head Framing (something I do a lot of because i cant be assed to draw full bodies lol)

and I've DEFINITELY used this for thinking about different panels!

Lastly: READ COMICS AND SAVE YOUR FAVORITE COMIC ART! I have sooooo many references/allusions to my favorite comic art and artists in my art (if any batman fans read my comics, see if you can spot some homages to my fave ever batman panels!) Nothing replaces seeing and saving what the industry professionals are doing.

I can't really say I read any of them! I don't have much time for fanfiction these days, and when I do read SxF fic, usually I'm reading stuff that's focused on Fiona Frost. For fic recommendations I always recommend looking through my AO3 bookmarks; you can search through those like you would any fic on AO3 (filter by fandom, character, ship, etc) and I do mark the ones I think are genuinely standout as "Rec."

HKJGH AW RED!! :'] <3 it does take a lot of energy, i understand :'0 i keep a lot of cool art in my tumblr drafts. the art stays in there until i have energy to type all my thoughts out. a lot of things stay stuck in there… i try to make sure art from my friends get out soon though :0 don't feel bad if you can't type a lot!! anything you can manage is okay! no one can be positive and kind all the time, and that's normal! just do what you can. i promise it's enough. (<- these are things i need to remind myself too <3)

im gonna try redoing some of my old school pieces. just cuz.

#( read: i was seriously emotionally unstable and made some graded works that a highschooler probably shouldn't have been making )#very specifically the self portrait we had to do #i think about it a lot #i just vividly remember having to explain the artistic choices i made and the meaning behind it to the whole class #and trying my hardest to not sound insane make people worry #( even tho it was inherently a cry for help )#i took inspiration from the two fridas if that gives you any idea of why that would be troubling #but i had some cool stuff i never finished #we did a triptych project where we had to choose an artist who did mainly triptychs and make our own based on a common theme the artist used #i chose hieronymus bosch who painted a lot about sin and the afterlife ( mainly hell )#i never finished it bc disability ftw but ive always wanted to #i dont have it ( i left it in that classroom ) but i remember the general composition #so maybe ill do smth with myself and redo it digitally #ill listen to nothing but oingo boingo and that handsome devil for the full experience LMAO

not to be a hater but i love when people do panel redraws and the original is just. better.

#homestuck fandom is a common culprit of this #like say what you want but the weird stylized bobblehead compositions were so visually interesting a lot of the time #and panel redraws would just give them huge anime eyes and make them look less lumpy. but the lumps are the best part of MSPA style!

i haven't decided on a name yet but not-Gumi got stabbed and the weeb cowboy got revenge

not-Gumi is a conscious robot while the weeb is a sapient one, the weeb is infatuated with not-Gumi while not-Gumi just thinks he's her owner, the difference in level of sapience here is due to a past war they had nothing to do with

also due to a fantasy virus they can both use magic that's vaguely based on playing card suits

#blood cw #vpng #conscious here meaning aware without thoughts and feelings #idk if there's a better word for it but apparently neither sapient nor sentient do so #their earlier versions were so different from the current one it's hard to believe they're both composited from them lol #but they did share two things in common #1. they all were a violent protector and a nonchalant healer pair #and 2. none of them had names lol #it's like my biggest weak point

ppl are so fucking bad at criticizing hazbin hotel like i know everyone has blind spots but the fact that the characters wear dated formalwear and stripes or fucking whatever is NOT what is wrong with the visual design and it doesnt take a genius to figure that out

#the problem is that there is no differentiation between the characters and their environment!! it looks like visual mud!! composition 101 #this can work for things like still illustrations but for animation it confuses the eyes- they dont know where to focus #and vivz is obviously a very skilled illustrator #you could argue there isnt enough diversity in design but for the people who work at the hotel? it makes sense #it makes sense that they would look like that its a common trope. alastor charlie and the furry look like little hotel boys!
