Gnoll Facts:
"Packed like sardines" is actually a Common saying borrowed from Gnoll, which predates canned sardines and instead references how many sardines we can eat in a sitting. My record is probably like seventy-nine, loosely estimating.

Also, this is just a random ask, but how does language work in the stars universe? I’ve been wondering for a while and I just keep forgetting to ask. Is it a everyone just speaks the same language? If so do different planets have different dialects? Or do they speak different languages, they just have a commonlanguage for trading and/or negotiating? Or would other planets learn Eldingvegr’s language since it’s an important planet tktrade with? Or do they just learn the common on Eldingvegr? Or is it a case of they speak different languages but everything has been translated into one?
(Sorry my inner language nerd came out and I really like thinking about how people from different countries or planets would communicate.)
-🌲
OHHHH FUN QUESTION!!!
there's a common language for trading and negotiating! if a planet provides education for all citizens (ie: if a planet is wealthy enough and every single person there is taught reading and writing), they will be taught how to speak common in school as well. it's a standardized universal language. because of how important it is to be fluent in common for things like negotiations, royals like wilbur, tommy, and tina especially speak more common than they do in their planets native language.
however! nearly all planets have a native language! you can see bits of eldingvegr's native language with the way things are named (ie: røkkrring, sólsid, etc.) along with wilbur and tommy's eldingvegr names (sóti and ióni). so basically eldingvegr's native language is old norse since that's what i've based all those types of names off of. wilbur and tommy both are fluent in eldingvegrian, but they're more used to speaking common since they've been trained so heavily in it their entire lives, so that's what they pretty much always speak even if it's just the two of them.
zephys iv does not have a native language however. again, this is something that'll be explained when the origins of zephys iv and the antarctic empire are revealed, but there's no single native language on the planet, so they pretty much all speak common there as well. you can hear different accents bouncing around based off whatever a citizen's native language is, but common is the only official language of zephys iv. common is closer to being phil's native language than elytrian is again for reasons that'll become clear later, but techno's native language is piglin and he learned how to speak common later in life. ranboo grew up on zephys iv and thus common is his native language although he does know enderian, and aimsey has been trained in interplanetary diplomacy since they were young so they're also very comfortable speaking common
also, most planets do have more than one language and they have different dialects because that's just how planets work, y'know? so when I say techno's native language is piglin, I mean he speaks the most common dialect of piglin found on his home planet of the nether, but there are variations and there are other languages found there like abyssal (the language of demons) for example. and when i say wilbur and tommy are both fluent in eldingvegrian, i again mean the most common dialect that's spoken in the røkkrring. there are different dialects found in different spots on the røkkrring, and also each side of the planet has their own languages as well. sólsid has a HUGE variety of languages largely unrelated to eldingvegrian from the different tribes that live in the desert there. there's not as many people who live in nóttsid outside of working in the mining colonies, but the few local groups there do speak a few scattered languages similar in sound to languages in the scandinavian family. the mining colonies often have pidgin languages that are a mix of eldingvegrian and these local languages

W8 - How do you or might you use language to change the way that your students think about learning in the classroom?
Working in technology for many years, there seemed to always be a new self help book on building up skills to be more successful, organized, a better leader etc. In 2005, I had a manager/mentor that read many of these types of books. Up to this point I had never really given “self improvement books” a chance as the “buzz words” in the books seemed flashy and geared towards selling books rather than real world results. This particular mentor changed that perception as he was wildly successful and credited his ideas, business culture concepts and business lingo to the books he was inspired by. Often organizations such as AT&T, Xerox, and even Apple develop internally or purchase systems for measuring competencies, performance and developing a common language based around said competencies for building successful employees. I was reminded of this as I read chapter 4 of Matera’s book on the language of learning. On pg. 38 Matera calls out his own inspiration from a fellow teacher and friend Adam Moreno on the concept of “purpose driven learning”. This style of learning being identified by ten qualities of highly successful individuals: confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, effort, focus, resilience, initiative, curiosity, dependability and empathy. Matera, in his classroom by building a “common language” was creating a highly functioning team environment similar to what you would see at a startup tech company with a culture of success! When I develop training for an employer I often start buy asking questions around common language and company culture to help build a narrative that incorporates these elements into the design. No one wants to work toward “hollow or nebulous goals” at work so the journey in your design should allow for learner ownership in driving the process. (Matera, 2015)  Matera references Gabe Zichermann work in gamification, creating the SAS model for motivation and the G Summit for expanding game mechanics in business education and non entertainment industries. Gabe has a great TED talk on kids and game effect on intelligence here: https://www.ted.com/talks/gabe_zichermann_how_games_make_kids_smarter#t-354563. I find it intensely inspiring to hear data the supports positive neurological growth benefits when using various gaming platforms, however I do believe in moderation as we can ill afford cognitive gains at the expense of other undiscovered developmental drawbacks.

Resist vs. Unite
I didn’t watch the Grammys in real time, but I was lucky enough to see A Tribe Called Quest’s unbelievable performance with, among other artists, Busta Rhymes and Anderson .Paak.  Among the more provocative elements of their performance was the procession of immigrants/minorities onto the stage for their finale of “We The People.”  And Q-Tip’s exclamations of “Resist!  Resist” couldn’t have been overlooked, nor could they have been more powerful.  But the performance (and the setting itself) reminded me of the gap that I believe we have to bridge, if we’re going to truly resist Trump and what his socio-economic class takes advantage of.
I touched yesterday on J.D. Vance, on his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.”  What last night’s performance made me wonder was how many people in his social circle in Ohio were tuned into the Grammys.  How many of them responded to Q-Tip’s pleas, or the entire (and in my opinion justified) bashing of Trump as “President Agent Orange”?  My guess is few, if any.
What I would’ve preferred to see was, somehow, a well-rounded Grammy performance that did not just include the plight of the immigrant population of this country.  I would’ve preferred, too, to have seen people discuss white poverty of the states that surprisingly voted for Trump.  It’s difficult, however, to create art that discusses opioid addicts and those hit hardest by globalization/atomization.
I touch on this note (and act as somewhat a Debbie Downer) because I think the issues which the performers last night touched on draw among the socio-economic interests of the people who pulled the lever for Trump this go round.  The optics of cultural capital -- Grammys, Hollywood, dope after parties, etc. -- I think are incredibly alienating to a large sect of the population who’re experiencing their own horror of socio-economic displacement, but have reverted to extreme tools to bring about the change they believe will best serve their interests.
Until a leader emerges who can speak to both classes of people, one who can find a common language and idea of a future around which we can all rally, I fear we’ll continue to have infighting that’ll only embolden Trump/Bannon to do extraordinary damage to the country/the world.  I fear Trump, Bannon and the rest of their cohort will be laughing all the way to the bank while they continue to rob blind the very people who’re begging for a glimmer of hope, while creating among a class of people whose hopes and dreams are largely pure and goodhearted that there’s no place for them in the globe’s richest, most powerful country.  I fear we’ll only consume ourselves.
Please, please let me be wrong.
