elia martell character of all time because she was playing the game of thrones AND WINNING — survived aerys, set up an alternate court on dragonstone, universally beloved even by most of robert’s anti-targ regime, was probably at least angling to get rid of aerys — but the literal song of ice and fire was being written around her and well. you can’t outrun your inevitable doom.
like. that’s elia’s tragedy, and what makes me so insane about her. she was in the wrong story. she was playing the game of court politics but ended up yoked to 300 years of targaryen collapse and dynastic rot instead. there’s nothing i love more than characters doing their best with the pieces they can see on the board, while the fact slowly dawns on them that the board is in the process of being swallowed by an eldritch monster.

if the eclipse was happening last year i would have so many thoughts about postcanon players living their normal (“normal”) lives trying to carve out a place in the world after only playing blaseball for literal decades. after a while you finally found a sense of security but the game never actually leaves you and every once in a while there’s something that shoves you right back onto the field. so it’s a random afternoon in april and people are talking about a total solar eclipse like it’s a rare scientific phenomenon and not something that killed a dozen of your friends twenty years ago. and nobody else knows that because nobody else remembers so you’re trying very hard to be fine with it and pretend like it’s a cool novelty like all of your new friends and new coworkers are. but then you meet the eyes of someone who Remembers, who was around for as long as you were (one of the only ones still left), and you know that they’re feeling the same bone-deep terror that you are.
but since it’s 2024 i’m very normal about everything and i’m not even think about this at all. 👍

I think JJK going on break after the last chapter is a bit cruel. This is nerve-wracking. We still have 3 chapters left and so many things can happen there. 268 feels too good to be true and the title is weird.
I'm not sure what is the right translation and I don't have access to raws. Right now, it's 268 title is "Finale" or "Conclusion" but I heard from someone that it can be also be read as "Curtains".
If it can be read as "Curtains", then it could be a reference to "final curtains". The problem is JJK has its own version of "Curtains", right? Idk what to think.
Gosh I wish it was “Curtains”. The chapter title is 決着 (Kecchaku) which means settlement/conclusion/end.
For example, at the end of an extremely brutal fight in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Jolyne screams “Kechakuuuuuuu!” (決着ゥゥーーーッ!!) (It's actually a small Jojo meme in the JP fandom.) This got translated as "Game set!"
I love the localization they used for this since that entire battle was like struggling in arcade mode for a fighting game.
Anyways, in the context of JJK, especially since this has been a literal Sukuna Gauntlet and the previous chapter had the “Ringing the bell on a long fight.” editor’s comment, I don’t think there’s an ambiguous way to read Kecchaku. The Curtain/Veil kanji in JJK is 帳 (Tobari). (Though if there’s some fancy wordplay I’m missing please let me know.)
However…I would kneel before Gege if this was an elaborate trick by Sukuna—him giving Yuji delusions of a happy ending only to yank it away last second. It’s very hard to make characters feel familiar but slightly off on purpose for misdirection. That kind of tonal control is something I praise Umineko for. (Dungeon Meshi does it excellently for the shapeshifter scene.)
But that is pure copium I think. Sometimes otherwise good media just fumbles the endings. (Not an example of good media, but I was around for the Secret BBC Sherlock Season 4 Ending meltdown so I’m not too hopeful about a turnaround.) I personally blame the JP work culture/crunch since a lot of modern mangas have rushed endings due to burnout/unfair contracts.
I think the most heartbreaking examples of this phenomenon for me are The Owl House and Moral Orel. Those shows still stick the landing imo, but the creators are very open about how studio interference forced them to condense everything. You can feel that suffocation in the final episodes. Everything is just slightly off and you know it would be better if the creators were allowed their breathing room.

I really hope the Dungeon Meshi dub is good because wow the subs are... they're something. Like they're not grammatically incorrect or anything but they keep making the characters say completely different things that mis-characterise them imo. recent example in the ep I just watched: Laios giving his heartfelt speech while everyone is taking a bite of their food and Chilchuck responding "Your timing sucks!", whereas the subs in that moment choose to make him say "You're so cringe!" Like... ?? he didn't say that? it's a small thing but these haphazard and frankly made up lines keep getting slammed in there and it feels so painful for something with such finely crafted characterisation and humour as Dunmeshi iunno
Update: I'm getting the suspicion that the subbed version I'm watching has subtitles that are a direct transcript of the dub, which makes me SAD that the dub is doing that but uhhh oh well. Apparently there's other subtitles that are actual translations though? so that brings me joy and hope lol
Update 2: I FOUND THE OTHER SUBS. I watched part of the same episode again and the translation is much better, which is a huge relief asjfg. however like a lot of official subs, they're scrubbed squeaky clean of anything that might be "difficult" to instantly parse which includes removing idioms instead of replacing them with equivalent ones, and getting rid of anything too hard to translate (like the 逆鱗 reverse scale thing which is a mythology that hasn't really crossed over to the west yet, translated simply as "weak point" in these subs) - so yeah it feels a lot flatter and more bland.... oh well, translation's a funny old game

Consumed good media... time to finish BAD media.
In the midst of the story REALLY trying to stress that Slash is Pure Evil, TRULY evil, what Real Evil looks like and Totally Totally evil evil evil with absolutely no other traits whatsoever besides being L + Stinky + Foreigner + Creep to women, Slate announces she is pregnant with Gray Wing's kits.
Re: hes not a "REAL" dad to Thunder or the Tom Trio. "Weren't really his kits." He's GOING to be a father. There's a nice moment later where he's like, "My love for my biokits doesn't feel different from the love I had from the others" but that does not change 6 books' worth of them explicitly downplaying his connection to the other four because they have biodads to angst about.
I'm stating something obvious, but god, I can't stand Gray Wing. I hate how this character gets praised as "The Best Dad Ever" when this WHOLE arc treats his connection to the kits as inferior to whatever abusive biofather wanders by. I despise how his "reward" for looking after all these kids who do NOT see him as their true dad is REAL children.
Path of Stars feels... fanservicey. Like it's desperately trying to tug at your heart strings, pulling cutesy shit like this. Look How Happy He Is :) He's Gonna Be A Dad :) and it just makes me resent him even harder.

Bosses in Harmony of Dissonance
Giant Bat (Marble Corridor A): mandatory for the Worst/Best Endings. The game allows you to skip it very easily, but it turns out that defeating the Giant Bat lowers the drawbridge that leads to the courtyard, in both castles. At the end of the game, you need to go there in Castle B to retrieve the Rib of Vlad: therefore, the Bat is only optional if you are going to defeat Maxim in Castle A, netting you the Normal Ending.
Living Armor (Shrine of the Apostates A): mandatory. It guards the Lizard Tail, which allows to slide.
Skull Knight (Skeleton Cave B): mandatory. It guards the Sylph Feather, which allows to double jump.
Golem (Luminous Cavern B): optional. It guards the Walk Armor (obtainable after getting the Griffin's Wing) and the Yellow Stone, which have limited utility.
Minotaur (Castle Top Floor B): optional, but highly recommended. It guards the Wind Book, which gives you some of the best spells in the game.
Devil (Sky Walkway A): optional, but recommended. It guards the Night Goggles. While it is hard, it's possible to traverse the dark room leading to the Aqueduct of Dragons without them. Speedrunners tend to skip it.
Giant Merman (Aqueduct of Dragons A): mandatory. You need to go through it to connect the Aqueduct of Dragons to the Clock Tower. This is important in Castle B, as you need to go through the unlocked gate to solve the puzzle that leads to the Crushing Stone.
Max Slimer (Clock Tower A): mandatory. You need to go through it to reach Death and progress the plot.
Peeping Big (Clock Tower B): mandatory. You need to go through it to exit the Clock Tower.
Legion (saint) (Sky Walkway B): optional. There is nothing stopping you from taking the long way and go through the Aqueduct of Dragons if you wish to circumvent it. It's inconvenient, though.
Shadow (Sky Walkway B): mandatory. It progresses the plot and gives you Maxim's Bracelet, with which you can access the Castle Top Floor.
Pazuzu (Castle Top Floor A): mandatory. It progresses the plot and allows you to connect the Castle Top Floor with the Chapel of Dissonance from the other side.
Minotaur lv. 2 (Castle Top Floor A): optional. It guards the Steel Tip, which gets soon outclassed by the Platinum Tip.
Legion (corpse) (Skeleton Cave A): optional. It guards the Cipher's Charm, which has limited utility.
Talos (Luminous Cavern A): optional, but recommended. It guards the Skull Key, which unlocks the two doors that connect the right and left sides of the castle (you need the Griffin's Wing to reach it, though). Personally, I found the Skull Key limited in its utility as it comes too late into the game, far less useful than the Lure Key, but it makes exploring easier.
Death (Luminous Cavern A): mandatory. It progresses the plot and he guards the Griffin's Wing, which allows you to high jump.
Cyclops (Shrine of the Apostates B): optional. You don't even need to connect Entrance B with Shrine of the Apostates B. While you need the Crush Boots that are found in the connected Wailing Way B (no matter the ending you want: either you destroy the ceiling of Castle Top Floor A to open the center of that castle, or you destroy the ceiling of the tower in Entrance B to collect the Rib of Vlad), nothing stops you from returning the way you came.
(Related: the areas that can be skipped are Aqueduct of Dragons B, Chapel of Dissonance B, a good chunk of Castle Treasury A, Room of Illusion B, and Shrine of the Apostates B. Marble Corridor B can technically be skipped if one enters the Wailing Way B from the Entrance and progresses backwards until the Crush Boots, but it's inconvenient)
