Due to recent experiences, I am feeling an urge to make an anti-drug-style PSA except it's warning impressionable machine-learning-curious teens to never, ever try a thing called "Huggingface transformers Trainer"

Not. Even. Once.

#and don't even get me started on “unsloth”#this week i learned what “unsloth” actually does when you import it and... man.#i thought i'd seen the worst of “hacky brittle 'it-just-works' (by doing the most cursed shit imaginable) ML python code” but no.#no. unsloth was Worse #and huggingface Trainer is bad enough by itself #did you know it has 131 (one hundred and thirty one!) config arguments and yet it cannot log *more than one loss number at once*#(for like multitask training or whatever)#i don't just mean it's hard to do - i mean its logging mechanism is built from the ground up on the assumption you would never do this.#you'd have to rewrite a bunch of internals to get it working - i.e. basically write a new nontrivial feature on HF's behalf #and just writing your own damn training loop is easier than that lol #it's not that hard kids. take it from me. dataset + dataloader + model(*args) + loss.backward() + opt.step() + opt.zero_grad(). that's it #it'll take you 30 minutes and save you a billion hours down the road #i do not understand computers #(is a category tag)

also like this is not a defence of parents but I think “and these are kids whose parents thought they were tech literate enough to sign them up for a programming class” is very silly because I think it’s pretty easy to forget how much of using a computer is a skill you need to learn. I remember when I was a camp counselor for a summer I had to teach kids how to use scissors and it was a wild experience because I forgot using scissors was a skill you needed to learn. and in the same way when teaching I was not aware I needed to teach students what file pathways were because it was an invisible assumed skill I wasn’t aware other people didn’t have, but I wasn’t like oh christ kids these days and their freaking ipads…. I just like taught them what a file pathway was lol. and then after getting used to windows file explorer after a couple weeks they knew what it was. ta da

#I notice that apple users tend to have less like general knowledge about computers but again it’s not catastrophic it’s literally fine lol #also I think the assumption that parents would only sign up their kid to a coding class bc they think they’re a tech wiz is also very silly #but that’s besides the point

I love love how Brennan chose to characterize porter where like. He's such an asshole. Such a fucking asshole of a guy and it really sucks to talk to him. And fig hates him so much just as she should. But despite that you can't discount him as some dope know-nothing cause he's got some INCREDIBLE wisdom and (for fig, not really for gorgug) is just a really good teacher. That really horrible experience of showing up to class with a burning hatred for the teacher for being here at all and then leaving knowing that you have just learned some incredibly valuable skills.

#s/o my eighth grade science teacher #she was such a fucking asshole. so incredibly strict. huge hardass. caused unnecessary levels of stress to hundreds of 13 year olds.#but holy shit did she know how to teach. the quality of my notes went through the roof in the course of that class. the following year i #was the top kid in my honors science class. her lesson on writing clear instructions will stick in my head til the day i die #I'm writing computer code now and i know for a fact that my eye for detail comes in part from her #hate that old ghoul. she retired a year after i left and good fucking riddance. unfortunately one of the best teachers in my life #dimension 20 #fantasy high

so fun fact. I originally had an idea for an ALNST spirited away AU (and a long list of other media I'm into in an ALNST AU)

But after I drew these and looked at their little faces I simply could not bring myself to go any farther. These poor kids do not deserve that 😭 especially chihiro I was so hurt at the thought of anything bad happening to her that I scrapped the thought immediately

I was still interested in their post movie dynamic (specifically the bits and pieces we get of haku's past + the fact that chihiro forgets everything once she leaves the tunnel) and it lingered on me after I watched the movie

these ocs are just me trying to explore a different flavor of that dynamic + traits from a few other pieces of media that I enjoy

#i believe toon also guessed #anyways sorry guys i am horrendously unsubtle #and also #spirited away meant a lot to me back then and it means a lot to me now #haku and chihiros post movie dynamic interested me #so i took them. broke them in half. threw them into a blender and made something outta the main concept #also jiu is very blatantly haku coded but kio is slightly more detached from chihiro #they have their own junk that separates them from og chihiro haku #honestly life and work has been beating my ass lately #i went back to rewatch this movie and i cried like a baby because all the themes are so painfully poignant #like as a kid i was like woah magic #and now watching it i feel like that meme of coralines dad at the computer screen #so when making new ocs naturally theyd seep in #HEAVILY #even entering young adulthood i still feel like chihiro yelling for her parents and crouching down small near the river 😭#sorry for yapping idk where that came from

vital part of the Kids Cant Read discourse thats KILLING ME is that the only opinions we see are from english teachers. this is fine when the discussion is ostensibly about literacy but i think we should pass the phone to math teachers and computer science teachers. because im a little suspicious that the focus on stem for the past 20+ years could be a contributing factor

similar to the greentext stuff - i was visiting with my neighbors and their grandkids were around, and I said to this eight year old, "Hey, you wanna know something cool? oh that's fun lmao, when minecraft & that update's existed for more than your whole life, and yknow being that young and like Next Year fr is this huge time scale away, a couple of years is a quarter of your life thus far and like maybe nigh half of the part of your life you actually have longterm memories for....i was checking out this dev's blog's archives about a:tdd's release in 2010 & in one entry they compared the implicitly Roughly concurrent release of Minecraft and i was like hey whoah. forever primarily being a game i've Heard Of more than any more direct exposure so i had no precise sense of [before minecraft release] [after minecraft release] Year 0 there but it's like for sure back in thee day when minecraft was a new thing, huh

Anyone know any good open source and/or relatively cheap or free extensions for FireFox that will help me bypass youtube's anit-adblock filter? It's finally caught up to me again and spam refreshing the page doesn't do anything anymore.

I'm running FireFox (latest update) on an ACER Aspire 3, I've got two forms of adblock, AdBlock and AdBlock Plus, and i've installed a Java Script enabler/disabler but so far toggling that extention on and off is only making the youtube page just go completely blank. I have no prior experience with coding so my Ctrl Inspect menu doesn't make much sense to me.

(Would bake anyone some fresh cookies as thanks if they could help but not entirely sure how that would work in terms of sending them via computer.)
