The Hollywood Beach Resort was built 98 years ago and is the epitome of old Florida.
Aside from being a hotel, the property has lived many lives. It was once the home of a naval training facility during World War II, a massive convention center in the 50s and Florida Bible College in the 70s. In recent years, it transitioned back into a hotel, timeshare and condominium complex. Some units have even been rented as Airbnbs.
In May 2023, the city of Hollywood declared the property unsafe and forced all guests to vacate the building. Currently, the future of the once-grand, now-decaying hotel is uncertain. A group of developers are hoping to buy the hotel to demolish it and build two luxury condominium buildings. In order for this to happen, at least 80% of the condominium owners would have to agree to sell.
Underneath the hotel is the dead, borderline-abandoned Oceanwalk Mall. A review from two days ago says that the mall is now being used by the military for training. Finals week crashes over her like a relentless tide, suffocating and drowning her waves after waves. She has diligently reviewed her lectures for the past week, determined to etch every formula into her memory.
Yet, one more thing baffles Wanda, for three months that she's been living with Natasha, sexual intimacy hasn't been ventured beyond intense make-out sessions each night. It leaves her pondering why Natasha, a woman of wild desires, has shown restraint for so long.
"One step at a time," Wanda murmurs to herself. It frustrates Wanda to no end as she wants Natasha to devour her completely. Perhaps after this gruelling week, she can plan a special surprise for her lover. The mere thought ignites her motivation to tackle another day of studying.
Natasha spends her day meticulously reviewing the weekly reports from each team, for the current high-rise condominium project that they have. The relentless pressure to meet deadlines hangs heavy in the air, but she can't shake off her growing dissatisfaction.
She addresses her employees sternly, "I can't help but notice that this week's accomplishments don't seem significantly different from last week's. The revised architectural plans are yet to be finalised and we're three months away from the groundbreaking ceremony."
Her disappointment is palpable as she continues, "Would you prefer that I reconsider the headcount of the planning team, or can you promise me a satisfactory result?"
Scott, the Head Architect of the planning team, steps forward confidently, "I can assure you, ma'am, that we will put our utmost effort to finalise the plans within the week."
Natasha's eyes narrow as she issues a final warning, "You'd better deliver on that promise, or you'll be the one wrapping things up after this week."
Natasha rose from her seat, her determined steps leading her to the familiar confines of her office. The passion she held for her work, as well as the empire her father had entrusted to her, were undeniable. Yet, moments like these made her yearn for simplicity. In her mind's eye, a particular image flickered – Wanda, someone she deeply missed at the moment. Natasha had allowed Wanda to temporarily leave from the company, seeing the young woman's need to concentrate on her studies.
She admired Wanda's unwavering commitment to her education and was willing to go to great lengths to ensure she maintained her academic record. There was an undeniable connection between them, a reflection of Natasha's own youthful enthusiasm, wide-eyed and eager to explore her dreams. However, as time passed, Natasha had seemingly lost that sense of wonder. It might have been the consequence of her reputation as a formidable and unyielding figure, dedicating herself relentlessly to her company's growth. It seemed that nothing could ever truly satisfy her ambition, as she continually reached for the seemingly unattainable. She sometimes wonders when she'll ever stop. But that's a thought for another day as she cannot wait to see her girl at home.
The week had flown by, and Wanda was relieved that the semester had come to an end. She felt confident in the grades she had achieved, finally allowing herself to relax in the comfort of her new home. All she yearned for was a good night's sleep and the prospect of receiving some affectionate kisses from her lover. However, her anticipation was yanked away when she received a message from Natasha, notifying her of the late hours she would be working to wrap up some office reports.
Despite her disappointment, Wanda decided that she would surprise her girlfriend with a visit and prepare a homemade dinner for both of them to enjoy while Natasha toiled away in her office.
Cooking was one of Wanda's favourite activities to pass her time as she used to watch her mother cook for them when she was little though this carried a bittersweet memory for her.
Their mother had left them when they were young, for another man. Because of this, Wanda and Pietro, her twin brother, had been shuffled between various orphanages in Sokovia, a circumstance that compelled them to mature faster in order to cope with the harsh realities they faced. They tirelessly worked to secure their place in each new orphanage, as these places weren't always welcoming.
At the age of 12, three years after their mother left them, they found themselves transferred to another orphanage which was located in Westview, New Jersey. Memory has been fuzzy between the two on how they managed to end up in America. Initially, it seemed more promising, with other children appearing healthy and content. However, the twins couldn't help but remain sceptical, as this seemingly ideal situation felt too good to be true.
"Hello, you must be Pietro and Wanda. Welcome to your new home. I'm Melina," the older woman introduced herself with infectious enthusiasm. "Come, you can meet the other children. I do hope you will enjoy it here."
Pietro and Wanda followed Melina, adjusting their backpacks higher on their shoulders. They were amazed at how refreshing this orphanage looked, unlike the previous ones they had experienced, which had often given them a sense of unease, especially at night.
"Carol here will show you to your respective rooms. I know you are twins and don't want to be separated, but the boys' and girls' rooms are on opposite sides to ensure that no chaos will ever occur between the groups. I hope this is okay with you," Melina said with a gentle smile, and all they had to do was nod in agreement.
Wanda's reverie was interrupted by the beeping of the oven. She had chosen to make garlic bread from scratch along with her all-time favorite, chicken paprikash. She hoped that Natasha would appreciate all the effort she had put into the meal for her.
Wanda managed to reach the office by 6:15 PM, finding the building almost empty as everyone had already left. This suited her perfectly, as she desired Natasha's undivided attention. She rapped lightly on Natasha's office door, hearing the soft response, "Come in."
Natasha was taken aback, she hadn't expected Wanda to visit her at this hour, assuming the younger woman would collapse into their bed, eager to catch up on sleep.
"Hey, detka. To what do I owe this surprise visit?" Natasha motioned for Wanda to sit on her lap, a gesture that Wanda followed without hesitation. Wanda sat down on Natasha's lap and instantly wrapped her arms around Natasha's neck . The older woman couldn't help but to lean forward and they began to kiss lightly.
"I wanted to prepare a homemade dinner for you, but you told me you'd be working late, so I brought what I cooked here instead." Wanda beamed proudly.
"Well, consider me lucky, as I am starving," Natasha replied with a suggestive undertone, she ended up giving light kisses on Wanda's neck while her hands began to caress Wanda's thighs, from gentle touches to an intense grip on her ass.
"Natty, behave, will you? The food might get cold," Wanda teased Natasha playfully, though secretly hoping Natasha wouldn't stop what she was doing.
"I almost don't care if the food gets cold, with a hot girl sitting on my lap," Natasha replied with a mischievous grin that never failed to drive Wanda wild.
"You're so naughty, you know that? I don't want our food to go to waste, let's eat while it's still hot." Wanda stood up and began opening the food containers.
"Fine," Natasha sighed, her interest piqued by the enticing aroma of the food. "Let's dig in. Just make sure you save me a delicious dessert, pretty girl."
"You can have me for dessert if you want," Wanda challenged Natasha, her newfound confidence taking her by surprise.
"Let's see about that, baby girl. Be careful what you wish for," Natasha playfully warned, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
They left the office a little after 8 in the evening. Natasha could see the exhaustion in Wanda's eyes, and to be honest, she felt tired too. They made their way to the basement to get to Natasha's car, and Natasha opened the passenger door for Wanda.
"Why don't you get your driver's license now that you're on summer break? I can buy you a car to save you the hassle of commuting when I'm not driving you," Natasha suggested as soon as they both settled inside the car. "Plus, you will need it once you get back to work in the company."
"I'll think about it, but I like walking around and waiting at the bus stop. It clears my head before starting my day at the university."
"I understand that, darling, but I just want to ensure your safety, especially at night when you're coming home."
"I'll think about it, Natty," Wanda replied, though the idea of owning a car, especially one that Natasha would buy for her, felt like a lot. It was overwhelming, yet it warmed her heart to know that Natasha was willing to provide for her needs.
When they reached their home, both of them carried on with their nightly routine together. Wanda donned a loose shirt and shorts, while Natasha preferred wearing boxers and a tank top that shows off her muscular thighs and arms.
Seeing Natasha in such simple attire led Wanda to subtly appreciate her partner's physique, a reaction that almost went unnoticed by Natasha herself.
"Good night, malysh," Natasha whispered as she kissed Wanda's head, which lay atop her chest.
"Good night, Tasha."

Humanity has such a understated habit of spreading turmoil.
Various causal hubris's parallel incurable viruses running rampant across the globe, left undetected by the immune system even without a soul spared from the infection. War, misgivings and countless tragedies often rooted in the minimized concepts of pride, jealousy, and senseless rage ; Mere misguided ideations disguised in order to justify even the indefensible.
Assumptions. Even something so simple, so moronic as assumptions could control the world in the right hands.

Idiots spread the labels given her throughout the masses in the form of insults, as if she didn't meticulously craft the initial mask herself.
She'd load the gun with blanks. And if it meant shrouding the more... undesirable truth, they could pull the trigger over and over again as many times as they please.
Let the bullets hit the frozen glass window on dreary grey nights, let them rain against it with the water dripping from the sky - but never, ever, pull back the curtain to the dim-lit condominium. ; Blind your eyes of the blonde sitting at the kitchen island, empty bottle of Jameson and it's half empty friend joining a downed glass of kin.
Fatal digits tonight not gracing euros, yen or dollars, but instead infirmly running across sorry excuses for 'names', made up of mere letters and numbers. Listed in a worn file only alongside otherwise meaningless dates, biological info and synonymous statuses printed in bold ink:

Victims of supposed sepsis. Embolisms. Organ failure. Repeated into the double digits. The words littered the pages like the alcohol tainted the assassins typically rational mind. Tempting her to again sit here, head in hand senselessly pondering the negligible. Reviewing the short lived, the manufactured, all that were apparently unfit for the cruel fate forced upon them. Debating useless questions in regards to how their lives could've played out.
Some nights it revolved around names and the string of them that followed based on whatever pleased the cold woman's ears. Others, inherited traits, interests, career fields, genetics.....
Maybe they would've inherited her infamous azures, currently staring yet not seeing. Sans any despair.. ; Glassy yet winning against any hint of tears.
Any hint of love.
If anything, outsiders wouldn't see the traces of responsibility lacing the withdrawn for mere blips with only two left to remember their existence.
For those on this list who wouldn't have been tortured, poked and prodded from the day of their conception to the day of their death if it hadn't been for rare misjudgment, and those who wouldn't find solace in a frigid heart, but atop resolute shoulders.
Only momentarily slumped under their weight.
Because come tomorrow, the sun would rise even if behind remaining clouds. Her head would pound. Files would again be concealed both where only she would be able to find them and where she would never look without whiskey's aid. And just as expected, ever frigid Nina Williams would walk per usual, head held high, shoulders back.
No cracks in the apathy. Burdens invisible and never assumed just as she preferred. Spite fueled and dwindling will again go toe to toe with loose ends. ; Bodies lost to an uncaring and all but considered mythical sea.

Lana is the Boss Ass Bitch socialite who has bought the town of Moose Springs in hopes of changing it for the better and bringing in more revenue with condominiums a'plenty, and Rick is the divorced small town business owner who can't help but fall in love with her despite being "accidentally" shot with a tranquilizer dart when she mistakes him for the town menace: a decorations-destroying Santa Moose.
I suppose you can say it was love at first shot. And what's not fun about that?

Iveta Theuserová was chair of the board of the homeowner's association (HOA) of the apartment condominium in which she lived in Most, Czech Republic. The condominium was administered by Krušnohor Co-operative, a local property empire, and the building's previous owner. As chair of the HOA, Iveta initiated a review of the administration and criticised faults she found, especially regarding the economic management of the condominium. In response the director of the Krušnohor company, František Ryba, made abusive and insulting remarks towards Iveta which were quoted in the local weekly magazine: "That lying cikánka? Do you mean the cikánka with the IQ of bubbling mud?" We took the case to the District Court in Most. After two years of legal proceedings, the court ordered the director to apologize to Iveta for abusive remarks; pay CZK 50 000 [EUR 1 900] compensation to her, and cover all the court fees.

Spoiler-Free Review: I'm sad I have to say this, but: this was disappointing. I picked this one up out of curiosity: it was billed as Smaller and Smaller Circles meets Himala, with the summary on the publisher's website implying that it was more along the lines of a thriller than F.H. Batacan's novel, which was very much a mystery novel.
But whatever this was, it definitely wasn't a thriller. It's not that I was expecting pulse-pounding, balls-to-the-wall action, since not all thrillers are built like that and frankly, I need to be in a very specific mood for that sort of thing to be any kind of fun. But I was at least expecting an intriguing plot: something with a cool mystery to untangle at the heart of it. The fact that this book centers around the Black Nazarene and Quiapo implied that the author would be mining the extremely rich vein of Philippine folk Catholicism, with the angle of tackling the many fringe practices and cults that are the byproduct of syncretization between Spanish Catholicism and precolonial beliefs.
Sadly, none of that comes to fruition in this book. First off, the pacing in this book is completely out of whack.  While there’s nothing wrong with going off on occasional tangents to show what’s happening with other characters, there was just way too much of that happening here to make for a tightly-told story.
This pacing is a reflection of the plot, which was just as out of whack as the pacing. I can see what the author was trying to do, but they just didn’t pull it together tightly enough for it to be any kind of fun read. There was a moment, about two-thirds of the way into the book, where there is a big explosion in a cave, and then the next scene cuts to the characters back in their safe spaces, celebrating Christmas. I know these quieter moments are vital and they contribute greatly to character development and plot movement because you can’t always have the action going full speed, but that was VERY badly placed.
The way flashbacks were handled was also poorly done. I think the author was shooting to make each chapter a complete entity unto itself, so he writes each chapter as if telling a short story about the character who’s the current focus of that chapter, but it just doesn’t work when you’re trying to do tension and intrigue in a scene. There were so many of these moments where something tense was happening, only for it to be broken because of a flashback. Of course, this meant the pacing and plot were further hobbled, unable to get any kind of real momentum.
Not that I'm talking of flashbacks, I think I need to talk about characters. For one, I think there were way too many POV characters in this novel - and this is coming from someone who reads fantasy on the reg, where sometimes you need a list of characters at the start of the novel just to keep track of who's who. The problem is that it felt like the author was trying to make EVERYONE a main character, but none of them had "main character energy", so to speak, save fr one or two, but they tended to get lost in the crowd of other characters who, quite frankly, just weren't interesting enough to hold my attention.
Additionally, the characterization also felt weirdly flat in places. I understand that in most cases, thrillers are about plot and not so much character development, but these characters felt like cardboard cutouts trying to sound more profound than they actually are. I think this might be because they’re all trying to be the main character and it’s just not working out. The way dialogue was formatted also didn't help, because there was something about the way it was handled that meant I sometimes didn't know who was talking in any given scene. On top of the fact that most of the characters aren't really THAT fleshed out, it's easy to get lost and wonder "Who the hell is saying this now?"
What I suspect the main problem here is, is that this book was written with the themes in mind first, and everything else built around those themes. Which, when you look at the themes presented in this book, is kind of admirable: the intersections between the wealthy, the powerful, the Church, and corruption in the Philippines; how Catholicism in the Philippines has valorized poverty and suffering instead of trying to uplift those who are poor and suffering; justice as commodity to be bought and sold by the corrupt and powerful, instead of a right guaranteed to all; the deep-seated wounds of colonialism and where that intersects with white privilege and cultural appropriation. These are all amazing ideas. But the book doesn’t let these emerge organically from the story through the characters and the plot; instead, it feels like the characters and the plot were made in service to the themes. Which then explains all the other problems this book has, in my opinion: the characters are reduced to puppets, and the plot reduced to a series of mere lines to be put into their mouths, with things happening TO them instead of BECAUSE OF them.
And again, this is all very disappointing, because I can SEE how this could have been an awesome read, but the execution just wasn't up to snuff. Maybe in the future someone will try this sort of thing again - honestly Philippine folk Catholicism is a VERY rich vein for story material and really should be mined more - and I hope it does the job better than this book. Which, frankly, isn't going to be that hard.

I am eternally starstruck
I come from a lineage that holds history and has ingrained values impenetrable by time and tradition. The epitome of transcendence. I seriously ought to get my life together
One of ‘em was a chocolatier (a woman who apparently had ancient devices that created the local delicacies called tablea) Only she had a sugar addiction— a Pepsi before she went to sleep.
Another was a lawyer who had apparently only skimmed his law books to review for the bar. 3 months before, he started and then afterwards aced it. (This was my brother)
The woman, who had spoken about the Bronx, asked me not to marry. For the love of New York, and culture and seeing my semi furnished apartment come alive, I would consider it. It was the daydream of lifetimes
I wondered halfway, if they saw right through me. What do I have for myself. That thought had quickly given rest after the guy next to me asked me:
“Nagdidissect na ba kayo ng frogs?”
I thought. Did he mean Prague? Surely not.
“Hindi pa kuya. Chemistry pa lang po.”
“Ah, yes. Biochem. I’m sure you’ve already memorized the table of elements.”
I was surrounded by people who had learned how to live in America. Often it felt like they were unreal and in the round table I was in I had briefly witnessed the partition between spectrums
At first I had just wanted to be a doctor. Simply because it is what it was. And then I saw more disparities as the evening went on. I had wanted to be like him.
His wife an artist, a painter, who had condominiums at some of the most set apart cities in the country. What lavishness they held.
The duration of the evening they have talked about what was the correct way. How to pay bills, getting an international drivers license, where to buy clothes, and earning and spending within my means.
We talked under a roof of a century old house. Apparently when they were kids, towards the local private school, they rode the local carriages (kalesas)
There I was, living off of my moms money and have drunken 100 buck coffee cups that barely got me through.
Yet I knew they held a different standard of living. I had tried to see through them. They were extremely disciplined people who have happened to have money. And I, was neither. I’ll have to take in what I can, and live vicariously by their stories during 9 pm talks at the old city they lived in.
I was the youngest person in the room and I felt like I was already living in the past
