“A pet peeve I have about Equestria Girls is that Sunset Shimmer and Princess Twilight Sparkle’s relationship was constantly infringed upon for the sake of plot convenience. Examples of this include: Twilight’s visit to the human world and interaction with Sunset being omitted in Friendship Games, Twilight not being there when Sunset came through the portal in Mirror Magic, and Sunset not thinking to contact Twilight right away in Sunset’s Backstage Pass (which seemed OOC for her since she’s been shown immediately turning to Twilight whenever she’s dealing with a problem or just to fill her in on how her life is going).  Heck, there’s even an EG comic that’s a part of an MLP magazine that includes Twilight being too busy with princess duties to spend time with Sunset.  As someone who ships them, it sucked to constantly see them being kept apart due to the nature of the storylines they were involved in.”

What Rivalry? | Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo
Tumblr media
A/N: Sorry this is a wee later than I thought, but I played soccer all day Saturday for charity and took Sunday to recover. Also, I'm a bit sad because the English defender I was talking to went back to England to renew her visa and I miss her lol so please enjoy this would make my day.
Based on this request
Warnings: Alcohol, implied smut, MDNI
Word Count: 2087
I had a thing for Arsenal players…Something about not only beating Arsenal in a game but then bedding one of the star English players as a Chelsea player, was something I loved.
I was a Blue through and through, pops and my older brother played for the Chelsea men and my mum was one of the physical therapists at Chelsea. Being a Blue did not stop me from eyeing Miss Leah Williamson after each and every game we had against Arsenal.
“There she goes again, money on Leah rejecting her this time.” Kerr would elbow Millie as she saw me saunter over and see me place an arm around an already smiling Leah.
Millie only blew out a breath, “yeah Sammy you already lost before ya even started, look at her…(y/n) got her wrapped around her finger”.
Sam only looked on and saw that my arm had now traveled to hold Leah’s waist as I stood whispering softly in her ear, earning a giggle from the normally stern faced captain.
“Ohhh yeah she’s a goner” Sam said with a laugh as both started back towards the tunnel.
______________________________________________________________
Leah and I had an arrangement, obviously, and well the first time that I was able to have a taste of Miss Leah Williamson it was after a particularly hard game for Arsenal…made her keep the game jersey on for our first night together.
Leah Williamson tastes like a good bourbon out with friends, a warm cinnamon candy during the fall, like a sunset, like the colors of autumn…She was addicting and tasted like the colors of the jersey she wore all bunched up above her chest as I took my time with her every single derby game.
She never stayed, always leaving once I had finished and never returned the favor. Leah wanted some time to just let go of control and I was the one to allow that for her…that was months ago, see it was just an arrangement…that’s all it ever was going to be. It was always going to be something physical and nothing more…the way that I had intended but I found myself falling for Leah…ironically…shortly after I had shut her down when she had confessed to me.
I remember when I tried to rectify whatever we had after I fucked it up when I had pulled her aside after a USWNT vs. England match.
______________________________________________________________
“Didn’t realize this was an Arsenal/Chelsea match? And bold of you to want to do something in the hallway…didn’t take that as your thing” Leah whispered the last part as she pulled me closer.
I put my hands on hers gently removing them from my jersey.
“No, Leah, I actually wanted to see if you were willing to go get a drink with me and you know actually talk?” Leah’s smile immediately drops at the realization and she takes a step back.
Her raised hand immediately stops me before I could continue,  “You don’t get to do this. I was heartbroken when you shut me down and I was like, "Fine, something physical as long as I can get to keep her around in some way”
She pauses to collect her thoughts and uses her next breath as her eyes grow stern, “But you can’t just shut me down and then realize you felt the same way. I don’t even think you actually have feelings for me…what about me do you like?”
I shuffle my feet, the sound of my cleats on the hard floors of the hallway.
“I still remember the first time…I still remember how you tast-” the English captain rolled her eyes and got close.
“You're really going to use what you said to me when you shut me down…it worked when you wanted to keep it physical..you being all poetic about the sex…but to use it when you actually want to prove that you want a relationship with me?” the space between us grew as I frowned.
The words now escaping me and a small, “You’re right, we shouldn’t keep doing this” escaped my mouth…Leah lifted my chin gently with her hand.
“Hey we both wanted it like this initially…so I can’t be mad at you…but you need someone who will want to stay with you even after the fact, take care of you, I don’t know…make you breakfast in bed or whatever… but that can’t be me…I’m sorry”. And with that Leah left the narrative…leaving me to not only sit with the 2-0 loss against England but also losing her completely
______________________________________________________________
Months and Months would pass and continue on…just like Leah did. She found herself with Jordan and well I was happy for her. There was a bit of bitterness in my mouth because I hadn’t found anyone who wanted to stick around in the morning.
Jessie Fleming, being my closest friend on the team, would always be there for my frustrated rants and she’d constantly reassure that there was definitely someone out there that “would put up with me and more”.
Jess’ way of getting me out of a funk was to prevent me from immediately going home after a Derby game. Of course, she would elicit the help of Sammy and Millie in convincing me that a drink with the Arsenal girls would not be such a bad idea.
“Come on, (y/n), ya can’t stay cooped up in your apartment all the time” Millie grabs me by the elbow after I had tried to return to my room.
I huffed as I sat on my couch crossing my arms, “I look ridiculous”.
“I think you look hot, come on, there were some new Arsenal signings so ya got options.” Sam winked as she finished up her pre-game drink.
I roll my eyes “weren’t y’all the ones giving me shit about getting with an Arsenal girl?” my hands going up and shaking “No, (y/n) come on keep the sanctity of the rivalry!” I mocked what had previously been said.
It was their turn to roll their eyes, “What rivalry? All I see is that you need to find someone” Jessie smacks my shoulder.
“Now come on, and don’t worry Leah won’t be there since her whole ACL thing” Millie says now picking me up from the couch  and pushing me out of the door.
______________________________________________________________
Alessia’s POV:
The bar was lively and we all had our own little booth away from the public so that we could all enjoy our time together. This was my first outing with the Arsenal girls since joining the team.
Lotte and Steph had reassured me that it was just a fun time with the girls and that the Chelsea girls didn’t bite.
“So, who’s coming?” I yelled to McCabe as she downed the last of her first beer of the night.
She looked at me with a cocked eyebrow, “Why? Hoping for someone in particular, Russo?”
“No, just curious” I say while taking a sip of the beer in front of me. Thankfully, the darkness of the bar hid the obvious blush now creeping on my cheeks. I was waiting for someone in particular, (y/n) (l/n)...I’ve had a crush on her even when I was at Manchester United.
I tried to swap jerseys with her and maybe swapped numbers but she was pretty to herself after games.
Katie seemed to read my thoughts, as a smirk played on her lips.
“Oh I know whothat girl is a tough one and that’s coming from me but she’s a sweet gal”
Caitlin looked to the entrance of the bar and with a laugh “speaking of sweet gals, look at the who finally arrived. The Blues late as usual”
I look over and see Sam, Millie, Jessie and trailing behind them (y/n).
“Sorry! Sorry, we had to drag this one out of her apartment” Sam said pushing (y/n) to the front. I, immediately, hid my face in my beer ignoring the dig from McCabe’s elbow into my side.
I glance up and catch (y/n)’s eye. She had a curious look in her eye that then shifted to annoyance as Sam pushed her in my direction as she sat down next to me.
(y/n) took her time to say hi to the rest of the girls and I suddenly felt McCabe’s elbow again.
I realized that (y/n) was looking at me, “Oh sorry was a bit in my own world there”
She laughs a little and shakes her head, “No worries, I don’t mind it…I’m (y/n),  congrats on signing to Arsenal, you played well in your debut by the way, Alessia”
The way my name sounded in her mouth made me melt into a puddle right then and there and I only snapped out of it once she got closer so as to not yell is what I told myself.
“I’m going to go get something stronger, want to come with or are you going to be nursing that beer the rest of the night?” she said just enough for me to hear.
I honestly think she felt the heat from the blush on my cheeks because a smile appeared on her lips before I even said “yes”.
______________________________________________________________
Alessia followed me and we both remained at the bar and had just a cocktail before she pulled me to the dance floor.
“Come on it’ll be fun” she said, pulling me towards her as we had a space to ourselves.
I looked at her slightly amused as she hadn’t realized that her hands had found their place at my waist.
“Bold, Russo…you trying to pull me?” I say not trying to break eye contact.
Must have been the alcohol in her system because a laugh escaped her.
“Well yeah hoping to pull the cute girl in front of me?”
I return the laugh and lean into her, “well I'm not going to stop anything that you may be planning, Russo”
Alessia, empowered, grabbed me by the chin and kissed me deeply totally forgetting that our respective teammates were watching from the booth across the bar.
Millie patted Sam’s shoulder, “guess, who won the bet Sammy, you owe me dinner” which earned an exaggerated roll of Sam’s eyes as she also slid a bill towards Millie.
______________________________________________________________
Alessia and I both found ourselves at my apartment later that night, clothes strewn about, both of our phones lighting up with notifications but us ignoring everything and focusing only on the other.
The taste of Alessia, I knew I would become addicted to, but I didn’t hold my breath because the other side of my bed would be empty come morning…like always.
I savored the moment and the sounds that she made as she came undone. Like a nice coconut rum, the sunrise in a forest, like a honey candy and as intense as the sun. Leah was right, I’m too poetic for my own good.
The light from my curtains hit my eyes as I lifted myself up…surprising myself when I felt a weight holding down the rest of my sheets.
There lay Alessia, sleeping soundly, with the sun hitting her hair in a way that created a light shine around her features. A small scrunch on her nose as she felt the movement from me and a light flutter of lashes allowed for her gentle blue eyes to greet me.
“Morning’” she whispered with a slight giggle.
I only nod, not knowing what to say.
“Sorry, I knocked out right after…I did want to return the favor you know” she said shifting closer to me.
I shake my head “nah, it’s ok…” Alessia stops me as she now finds herself on top of me, now filled with an energy in her eyes even though she had just woken up moments ago.
“No, I want to and then I can make you breakfast too…” She said gently lowering herself, taking my lips slowly as she did as she promised.
______________________________________________________________
Alessia stayed more than that morning, she made an effort to visit me and make me laugh many times after that night. At our first derby game together, she prompted a swapping of jerseys where with her jersey was a crumpled piece of paper neatly written.
“What rivalry? Just want to be able to take you on a proper date. :) Text me when you get home xxx-xxx-xxxx”
Jessie was right, I did find someone, who would put up with me and more and I'm glad it’s Alessia.

Richard Dabate, Connecticut inmate 420151, born 1976, incarceration intake in 2022 at age 46, scheduled for release 05/02/2087
Murder
Rick Dabate, who was convicted in May 2022 of murdering his wife Connie in 2015, was sentenced to 65 years in prison as Judge Corinne L. Klatt called his actions, "brutal, calculated, incomprehensible."
A jury found Dabate guilty of murder following a five-week trial. Dabate was also found guilty of tampering with evidence and making false statements.
Supporters of both the defendant and the victim spoke passionately to the judge during a period set aside prior to sentencing, and that includes Connie Dabate’s mother.
His mother-in-law shared details of a chilling phone conversation with her daughter the morning of her murder.
"The first thing she said on the phone was 'mom I love you,'" said Cindy Margotta. "You're my best friend. And I said, I didn't know what was going on, I said 'I love you too and you're a good friend of mine.'"
But Connie had more to say that morning.
"I just want to let you know Rick is a mess today," is what Connie said, according to her mom.
As a result of the tragedy that ensued, Cindy Margotta has regrets.
"I wish I had said 'well if he's such a mess why don't you come to my house and we'll have breakfast,'" she said outside Rockville Superior Court.
Rick and Connie Dabate's now teenage sons live with an aunt, who told the court one of the sons asked her to text his mom in heaven and to use a telescope to see heaven.
"Today is an accumulation of almost seven years of stress and anxiety, hurt and pain," said Wayne Rioux, a Margotta family friend.
During her statement to the court, Rick Dabate's mother, Janice, said if her son was guilty of murdering his wife, he would have admitted it.
"Today was the close of just the first chapter of the litigation in this case we are going to continue to fight with the appeal," said attorney Trent LaLima, Dabate's lawyer.
One of the key pieces of evidence: Connie Dabate's Fitbit. The data extracted from it suggests she was still moving around the house an hour after Rick Dabate said she was killed.
"I think that's gonna be for an appellate court to decide," said LaLima. "That was my argument it's not sufficiently reliable and proven."
For now, though, Connie's family can finally breathe.
"I just feel like a surge from up above," said Cindy Margotta, with a smile. "I just feel the strength coming to me right now."
The prosecution asserted Dabate murdered his wife in part because his world was crashing, as a mistress Dabate had impregnated was due to give birth to their child just two months after the murder.
One of the Dabate's neighbors in Ellington said she thought it was extremely weird that just a few days after the murder, Rick Dabate was texting neighbors asking what their favorite takeout restaurants were.
The case was known as the "Fitbit Case" due to Connie Dabate wearing a Fitbit tracker at the time of her death. The Fitbit, used as evidence against her husband, recorded Connie Dabate moving an hour after her husband said a masked intruder killed her.
Dabate had testified at the trial that in December 2015, days before Christmas, he had come home early because he forgot his laptop. There, he supposedly saw a masked man with a voice like actor Vin Diesel dressed in camouflage. He claimed the man had shot Connie in their basement, tied him up, and stabbed him before Dabate was able to burn the alleged intruder with a torch.
Dabate also confessed to having an affair at the time of Connie's murder and had lied to the police about it.
Twelve jurors heard from more than 100 witnesses, including Dabate, over 22 days and saw 600 pieces of evidence.
“The thorough and thoughtful examination of technology was key to this investigation and was significant in proving that the defendant was guilty of this crime,” Prosecutor Matthew Gedansky said in a statement. “In the end, though, this was another case of domestic violence. And though much progress has been made in recent years to support victims and survivors and to hold abusers accountable, these domestic violence homicides are still happening so we must continue to work together to end domestic violence.”

Fall 2087.
A few months after her breakup, Selena finds herself back at the same bar with the same girls. She’s a little tipsy but not wasted. She’s lonely, sad, thinking about chances missed. Should she call him or shouldn’t she?
“Call him,” Summer encourages. Because that’s what friends are for!
Andre couldn’t say he was completely happy to hear from her again. It was complicated. He cringed, remembering the sting of rejection, thinking about his overzealous confession last summer, wishing she wouldn’t bring it up at all. But, of course, she did. “And you loved me?”
Loved, past tense, she asked. He was unclear about all that now. In love, he had said. But not love. Maybe it was just a crush? A crush that had now turned tender and sour.

Katsuki loves his boyfriend a lot. A bit too much, honestly if the half erased doodles in his margins, matching pieces of jewelry, and soft glances aimed at solely Eijirou are anything to go by. Katsuki feels like he wants to wrap himself in red, the smell of steak, and the feeling of sore muscles after a workout. Katsuki has no problem admitting, to himself at least, that he's head over heels for Kirishima Eijirou. That's the thing though; Katsuki can't man up enough to tell his boyfriend he loves him to his face.

Confession 2087
I watch Jennifer’s Twitch streams on demand because of time difference and there is someone in Jennifer’s Twitch chat that seems to be trying really hard to convince everyone that she is Jennifer’s girlfriend without outright saying it and it is hard to watch. Jennifer gets overwhelmed and anxious easily, and this one person keeps pushing and getting mad at Jennifer for not playing along with her silly hinting. I hope that she isn’t Jennifer’s girlfriend because she seems like a massive bitch.

I’ve Made A Huge Mistake {1/?}
Peter Parker x Reader, Quentin Beck x Reader

Warnings: Violence in later chapters, manipulation, age gap

~~~
The blip had been stressful, college had been stressful, overall it was pretty safe to say Peter’s life was ridiculously stressful at the moment. He was hoping this trip to Europe would help him blow off some steam. And who knows, maybe it will be the perfect time to tell his best friend that he was madly in love with her. So there he was, standing in an airport with Ned, waiting for her to show up. Finally she did, looking effortlessly perfect. She’d always been pretty, and he’d probably always been in love with her, but now she was on a whole other level. And somewhere along the transition between schools she found an affinity for short skirts, which Peter (along with the majority of the male (and some female) population on campus) firmly believed was purely to torture him.
“Hey, you look great,” Peter said, feeling a strong sense of pride as he watched her face turn a couple shades of red darker. “You excited?”
“Yeah, I really need this break.” She responded.
“Same, wanna just be a normal person for once.”
“So no Spiderman?” Peter shook his head. “What are your guy’s plan then?”
“Single bachelors in Europe.” Ned answered, Peter watched her carefully, trying to figure out if her face did drop a little or if it was just his imagination.
“Well that’s his plan.” Peter mumbled.
“What’s your plan then?”
“I don’t know, just gonna see what happens.”
“Alright, I should probably go check in on MJ.” She said as she walked away. Peter watched her, admiring the way her legs looked in that skirt.
“Single bachelors in Europe.” Ned tried to remind him.
“Yeah, that’s your plan.” Peter answered absentmindedly. The plane journey was reasonably uneventful, minus her falling asleep on Peter’s shoulder and him trying to make sure his brain didn’t short circuit. And somehow Ned managed to start dating Betty, neither her nor Peter could figure that one out.
They finally reached Venice, and even though their hotel was a little shoddy, the city itself was more beautiful than any of them could have imagined. The three friends all split up, Ned went off with Betty, she went off with MJ and Peter was walking around the city on his own, aimlessly wandering around the old streets. One small jewellery store ended up catching his eye. It was down a small alley, a good walk away from the Grand Canal. There was a delicate silver necklace with a detailed, glass daisy charm.
It reminded him of when they were kids. How she thought they were the prettiest flowers and how he would search round parks and the occasional crack in a sidewalk for them. He’d bring them to May, who would help him tie a bow around them. Then the next day he’d give them to her at school, feeling the greatest satisfaction a kid could possibly experience when he saw her face light up. It would be the perfect gift to go along a lifelong love confession.
Peter entered the store. Lucky for him the necklace was within his budget. He carefully placed the package in his pocket, planning out how to tell her how he felt in his head. He strolled out of the store, an extra little pep in his step.
“Boh.” Mj said, popping up behind Peter, closely followed by her.
“What?”
“Boh. It’s the perfect word in the world. Italians created it, and I just discovered it.” MJ explained.
“She’s very proud of that.” She said, smiling at MJ’s unusual excitement.
“What does it mean?”
“That’s the thing, it can mean a million things. It can mean ‘I don’t know’, ‘get out of my face’, ‘I don’t know and get out of my face’. It’s the best thing Italy ever created, except for maybe espresso.”
“Oh, so you’ve been drinking espresso.”
“How did you possibly guess that.” She jokes making Peter laugh. MJ sticks her finger up in response to her two friends. A man came up to the three of them before MJ shooed him off with a simple boh.
“Boh is my new superpower. It’s like the anti aloha. I was born to say this word. So, what’s in the bag?”
“Um, boh.” Peter responded.
“Nice.” MJ smiled before walking away after she spotted Brad, leaving Peter and her alone.
“You think they’ll get together?” She asked Peter, watching MJ and Brad interact.
“No!” Peter said surprisingly abruptly, “why, did she say something to you?”
“She likes him, thinks he’s really nice. But she’s not ready for a relationship at the moment, the world’s too messy for that right now.”
“Tell me about it.”
“What do you think?”
“I don’t want them getting together. Don’t think they’re right for each other.” Peter said.
“Oh.” She said, feeling her heart drop a little. Why did he care so much about MJ’s love life?
“So you two have a nice time?” Peter smiled.
“Yeah, the city’s insanely pretty and I also got to find out how much pigeons like MJ.” She replied, trying to lighten the mood and ignore the jealousy bubbling in her chest.
“Wait … what?”
“Yeah, I’ve got pictures.”
“You have got to show me.” There was multiple photos of an awkward-looking MJ covered in a stupid amount of pigeons. In front of them a hoard of crabs scurried out of the water.
“Whoa,” she said, moving her phone away to watch the animals. “What the hell?” All the water around them began to flow towards the middle of the river. Seconds later the water exploded above the river. People quickly began to panic, running away from the water. Ned and Betty slammed into her and Peter, scrabbling out of their gondola. The water soon formed a giant-like monster.
“What is that?” Ned asked, panicked as he scrambled out of the boat.
“I don’t know, I don’t know.” Peter shouted back, “You just need to get them out of here.” He gestured to Betty and MJ. Ned nodded, guiding the two girls far away from Peter.
“Do you have your suit?” She asked him. He shook his head. “Why not?”
“I’m on vacation.” She glared at him. “You need to get out of here, don’t worry about me just get to safety.” He said, holding onto her shoulders protectively. She nodded.
“Take this.” She said, pulling out a masquerade mask from her bag before kissing his cheek and running off. He blushed before regaining his composure and placing the mask on his face. The monster smashed through the surrounding buildings sending rubble raining down on the fleeing civilians. Streets flooded with water as parts of the monster flew out to attack. Peter put on his web shooters and shot out at the monster. The web went straight through it. You fucking idiot, he thought to himself. He spotted a bridge, vaulting over poles sticking up in the river to get to the higher ground. Before he could prepare himself for a fight he was hit by a blast of water. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a masked figure fly down, shooting green beams at the water. The figure was dressed in green and golden armour with a fishbowl-like mask. Peter watched the mysterious guy fight the monster, the water thrashed out, hurling the man into the water. Peter panicked, climbing up the side of a building to get a better view of the situation. The man somehow remained reasonably unharmed and flew back up to carry on the fight.
“Hey!” Peter shouted, getting the attention of the man, “Let me help, I’m really strong and I’m … sticky.”
“I need to draw it away from the canal.” The man shouted, flying towards the city centre, luring the monster away from its source of power. As the man flew away Peter swung up to a bell tower that was about to fall - potentially about to crush a number of civilians, including a cluster of his classmates. He shot his webs to more stable buildings, using all his strength to prevent its collapse, ignoring the pain as the bell slammed into his head. He manages to pull the tower back into place, shooting a series of webs to keep the tower up. He stood up to watch the man formed green mist around the monster, repeatedly hitting the monster with it. The monster weakened, losing water and power. The man flew up to closer to the tower Peter was on. Green triangles sent beams out at the monster until it was about to be defeated. Right before the monster fell Peter spotted her standing on a bridge behind the monster.
“My friend’s on that bridge.” Peter shouted, the man looked from Peter to her, frozen in fear, cemented to her spot on the bridge. The man sent one final blast out at the monster and as it fell towards the bridge, the man flew out towards it. The remaining water crushed the bridge below it, leaving her screaming as she began to fall down into the water. Peter felt the world crumbling down around him, he’d lost too many people, he couldn’t risk adding her to the list. He began to swing out towards her, but before he could reach her he saw the man dive into the water, soon emerging with her in his arms. Peter relaxed instantly, dropping down a safe distance away from his friends. He watched as the man held tightly onto her as he placed her down on the ground. The college students all cheered for the man as he saved their friend.
“You alright?” The man asked her, continuing to hold her as she coughed up the water. He had one hand on her waist and the other placed high up on her leg, dangerously close to the end of her skirt.
“Yeah, I can’t thank you enough. I thought that was going to be the end.” She said, smiling admiringly up at him. Her hands also remained holding onto him as though if she let go she’d be back in the water.
“I couldn’t let you die on my watch.” He said, his hand leaving her waist to push the wet hair out of her face. She blushed, looking down at his other hand. Only then did he seem to realise how high up her leg his hand was. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“No, it’s fine, I don’t mind.” She replied, the same grateful tone in her voice. She pulled down her skirt slightly as he helped her up.
“Here, take this, it’ll warm you up a little.” He said, removing his cape and wrapping it around her shaking shoulders.
“You sure you don’t need it?”
“I’ve got a spare one, you need it more than I do.” He pulled the cape tighter around her, he placed a hand on her cheek which she instantly leaned into, “stay safe.” He said before finally flying away, waving to the cheering crowds around him. Peter had watched the two’s interaction from afar, a strong feeling of guilt consuming him that he wasn’t there to help him. He had vowed the day she found out he was Spiderman that he would always be there to protect her, save her from any harm that may come her way. And if it wasn’t for this mysterious saviour, she could have easily been dead. Peter tried to push these feelings aside. His classmates now all surrounded her, checking she was alright, asking about the man, failing to hide their envy of the small interaction. Peter walked slowly back to the group, checking that the necklace was still intact. Thank God it was.
“Peter!” She shouted, running over to him and wrapping her arms and the cape around him. “Thank God you’re alright, I was so worried. How are you?” She buried her head in his neck.
“Hey, hey, this isn’t about me. You almost drowned, I should be asking you that. I promised to protect you and I didn’t. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you dare apologise.” She said, lightly smacking him on the chest. “You had other things to deal with.”
“I just can’t lose you as well.” Peter hung his head.
“You’re not going to, I promise.” She smiled at him, he looked up at her through his lashes. Her heart swelled and she almost hated him for how adorable he looked right now. “Who was that guy?”
“I have no fucking clue.”
Patton is running out of time.
On one hand, he has endless time. Even when they graduate, it doesn’t mean it’s the end. But on the other hand, who knows what will happen! Logan could move overseas or go to space!
(Admittedly, the second one isn’t very likely, but Patton has come to realize that with Logan, nothing is impossible.)
It doesn’t help at all that Dee has been giving him that look since he met up with him back in their dorm room after class. Maeve isn’t much better, but at least she’s mostly focused on painting Dee’s nails ten different colors.
“Remind me again why Aldridge didn’t convince you?” Dee asks with a sigh.
“Stop moving!” Maeve protests. Dee sticks his tongue out at her.
Patton shrugs, pulling his blanket around him tighter. “I guess I know there’s a chance we’ll find each other again, but what about all the time we’ll miss spending together?”
“Patt,” Maeve says, not looking up from Dee’s fingers. “What’s so hard about saying you wanna bang him?”
“Maeve!”
“Stop moving!”
Dee huffs at her. “What Maeve would say if she had any sort of elegance-”
“Fuck you, for one.”
“-is that if you really care about him, tell him. Holding back will only hurt you.”
Patton makes a pouting face. “Worse than him not feeling the same way?”
“At least that way you’ll know.”
The room falls silent aside from Maeve’s out of tune humming and the occasional hiss from Dee whenever she gets nailpolish on his hands. Patton watches them, and part of him is jealous. He wants what they have. Complete trust and care and openness.
He could have it.
Patton bites his lip. “Okay.”
Maeve jumps at the sudden break in silence, “Dee don’t move!”
“I didn’t!” Dee glares at her, then looks up at Patton. “Are you sure?”
“Aw, kiddo, I’m always sure!”
“I’m not a child.”
“I beg to differ.”
“Just paint my nails, Maybelline,” Dee snarks back at Maeve. He raises his eyebrows at Patton. “I’m serious. I watched the two of you dance around each other for four years, and you’re just deciding this here, now?”
Patton shrugs. “No time like the present!”
Dee snorts, “Tell that to the you of the past.”
“If I could time travel, I’d make sure to let him now.”
It takes Dee a few seconds, and he blinks blankly. “Truly one of your best puns, darling.”
Patton smiles shyly, “Yeah, I’m nervous.”
Twisting the cap on her nailpolish kind of violently, Maeve flops down onto her back, sticking one foot out to poke Dee in the face with it. “I feel like I’m at a middle school sleepover. Just call him!”
Dee shoves Maeve’s foot away and tosses Patton his phone. Patton fumbles it, accidentally hitting it back at Dee, who looks very tired as the phone and Maeve’s foot hit his face. Patton grimaces, “Sorry! One more time.”
Tossing it slower, Dee ducks, only straightening when he’s sure Patton has the phone securely in both hands. “Good, now dial.”
“And say what? I can’t confess over the phone!”
Maeve sits up again, blowing her uneven bangs out of her face. “You’re having lunch with him, right?”
“Yep!”
“Ask him if you can tell him something important when you meet, that way you can’t chicken out.”
Patton tilts his head. “Hey… that’s pretty smart!”
“That’s because I’m pretty smart,” Maeve says, throwing a pillow at Dee when he makes an ‘eh’ noise.
Giggling, Patton shakes his head. His friends are pretty weird. With a deep breath he dials Logan’s number, holding his phone to his ear. It rings four times and Patton starts to think Logan won’t pick up when the line clicks.
“Patton, I was just about to call you.”
Patton is well aware of Dee and Maeve’s eyes on him as his face brightens. “Really? Well I guess I beat you to it!”
There’s something off in Logan’s voice when he says, “I suppose you did.”
Ignoring it, Patton fiddles with the blanket around him. “I wanted to ask you something, but you go ahead, okay?”
“Very well.” Logan clears his throat and Patton already knows it’s bad news. “I’m afraid I- well you see something came up and- Patton I’m afraid I’ll have to cancel lunch.”
Apparently the disappointment on his face is obvious, because Dee starts waving his hand with a question look, “What?”
“He has to cancel lunch,” Patton whispers.
Maeve makes a face. “Dick.”
“I’m sure he has a good reason!” Patton defends, still whispering. “I’ll just talk to him tomorrow.”
Dee shakes his head. “No, you won’t. I know you. Tell him now!”
Patton stares at him, one beat, two, then goes back to the phone. “That’s okay, Lo! Don’t worry about it!”
Both Maeve and Dee groan.
“Excellent, now what was your question?”
“Oh…” Patton goes back to whispering. “He wants to know what my question was.”
“Tell him!” Maeve and Dee whisper shout at the same time.
Patton gives them an apologetic look, raising his voice for Logan, “I was just wondering where you wanted to meet. That doesn’t really matter anymore though!”
Dee slaps his forehead, Maeve goes back to painting her toes.
Panic starts to settle in Patton’s chest, the same feeling he gets when he accidentally procrastinates on homework and only realizes the day it’s due. He’s pretty sure Logan says something else, but he can’t make it out over the rushing blood in his ears. “I’ll see you around!’
It’s only after he hangs up that he realizes he didn’t tell Logan how incredible he is, which is definitely something Logan would notice. So now Logan probably hates him.
Dee stands up and ruffles his hair, “Come on, sunshine. Maeve is going to meet her sister for lunch, you and I can grab something together.”
Forcing a smile, Patton nods. “Okie dokie!”
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Pretend you’re fine.”
Patton shrugs, and then Maeve is hugging him. “Dee doesn’t know what physical affection is,” she says.
“Shut up,” Dee replies, but he smiles encouragingly at Patton and his hand stays on his head.
Maeve huffs into his shoulder. “You’ll be okay, sweetheart. There’s always tomorrow.”
“Right.” Patton hugs her back. “Tomorrow will be better.”
“There you go.” Maeve pulls back and stands, and just like that her soft, caring behavior is gone. “Now I’m going to go eat the hottest wings that place downtown has!”
Dee’s eyes widen in alarm. “What!? You can barely handle normal hot sauce!”
“That’s what my sister said!” Maeve is already halfway out the door. “Time to prove her wrong!”
“Or go to the hospital!”
“Sounds like an adventure!” The door slams, Dee pinches his nose.
Patton smiles, “She still wants kids, right?”
“Yes. I’m terrified.”
“I’m excited.”
Dee snorts and passes Patton his cardigan, “Let’s get going, I want steak.”
“I bet you take it rare-”
“Oh god.”
“-like you!”
Rolling his eyes, Dee stuffs his hands in his pockets. “You’re a comedian, Patton.”
“I know that was sarcastic, but I’m going to take the compliment!”
Campus is busy, friends and couples rushing from place to place, to get food or to class, some are already going home. It tugs at Patton’s heart, that he won’t see these things anymore come next week. He glances at Dee, puffing up his cheeks. “So… you mad at me?”
“Never.”
Patton smiles, sticking his hands in his pockets and his tongue out of the corner of his mouth as he tries to keep pace with Dee. Unlike Logan, he doesn’t slow down for him. “Hey Janus?”
“Uh oh.”
“What?”
“You only use my real name when it’s serious.”
“I do not!”
“Do too.” Dee throws an arm over Patton’s shoulders. “Come on, let it out.”
Patton huffs. “Do you think that if you really love someone, you’ll always find your way back to them?”
“No.”
“What- that fast?”
Dee shrugs. “I don’t think love is on the universes scales of who you happen to run into on the street. There’s no such thing as soulmates, Patton.”
“Then…” Patton wrinkles his eyebrows. “What do you call people who are in love, who want to spend the rest of their lives together?”
“Idiots.” At Patton’s affronted noise, Dee sighs. “Happy idiots.”
Stopping, Patton turns to frown up at Dee. A bicyclist passes them, and Patton can’t even force himself to smile and wave like he usually does. “So what happens if graduation comes, and I never tell Logan?”
“Most likely? You get a good job, you buy an apartment with a leaking sink, Maeve stops by at least once a week to annoy you, we have Sunday dinners that move to Friday’s after Maeve has a kid. We learn how to golf of all things, and that replaces the parties and “wild nights”. We get old, we retire, we die and I give my law firm to one of my godchildren, and we’re buried next to each other like the codependent bachelors we are.”
Patton giggles, “That doesn’t sound too bad.”
“No. It doesn’t.” Dee rolls his eyes and sets a hand on Patton’s shoulder. “But it would be so much better if you had Logan.”
“I know.”
“Then tell him.”
Right on cue, Patton’s phone plays the familiar “Up” theme. He takes it out of his pocket, staring at Logan’s contact. “I can’t tell him.”
“Darling-”
“I want that.” Patton puts his phone away and smiles at Dee, “I want the golf and leaky sink and annoying Maeve. I want to get old with you.”
“And without Logan?”
No. More than anything, no.
Patton smiles up at Dee, “Come on, Janus. Lunch is waiting.”
It’s not until Janus is walking ahead of him that he pulls out his phone to text Logan an apology. Maybe Dee is wrong. Maybe one day they will find each other. One day when Patton isn’t so scared.
The rest of the day is a blur. Patton puts so much effort into trying to keep up a happy facade that every minute blends into the last until he’s sitting in his dorm, and Janus sets a bottle of blue nail polish in front of him and says, “Tomorrow will only be better if you let it.”
Staring at the blue shade, Patton imagines a yellow one next to it, an orange next to that. He imagines his mom’s voice that he can barely remember past the few home videos in a box under his bed.
Tomorrow will only be better if you let it.
Was that her mistake? Is that his?
“Patton.” Dee sits down on the edge of his bed, taking the nail polish and setting it gently in his palm.
“I know.”
Dee nods, leaning forward to kiss Patton on his forehead. “You’re letting fear keep you from being happy.”
“I am happy!” Patton argues, and there’s weight behind it. He is happy. He loves Janus and Maeve and his dad and he’s so excited to get his degree-
“You’re not the happiest you can be.” Janus smiles, “Tell him, for our collective sanity.”
Patton’s phone dings. The roommates both lean over to see who would be texting at this hour, Patton half expects it to be Maeve, asking if they have any frozen burritos left.
It’s not. It’s Logan.
Library? Only if you wish to.
“Should I say yes?”
Dee gives him a deadpan look. “No. You should turn down this perfectly timed opportunity because of campus curfew.”
“Oh..”
“Say yes!”
Patton jumps. “Oh!” he fires a text back, jumping up to shove on his shoes. He turns and looks at Dee. “Tomorrow will be better.”
“Because you’re going to let it be, you giant sap.” Janus throws Patton’s cardigan at his face and waves his arms at the door, “Go!”
Ten minutes after that, Logan is standing in front of him in the empty library, breathtaking and smart and tired and sad.
Patton tries to remember all the love stories he’d ever heard, a song lyric or a poem, any one of the things Janus had beautifully said about love over the years, some way to tell his best friend and love of his life how he feels.
At least forty forced smiles, the rollercoaster of a day, and the late hour make it so very, very hard.
He shuffles his feet and then sighs, he can do this. “Logan-”
“I’m in love with you,” Logan blurts.
Patton’s eyes widen.
The world stops.
Tumblr media
— flashback, Spring 2087. Selena’s good friend, Andre, has some ideas about her relationship with Luis. And he has a confession, too, which isn’t received as well as he hoped.
                                                       ***
After the ceremony, graduates and their families mingled in the gallery and cafeteria of the Casbah Arts Center, featuring a spread of light appetizers and desserts. The bar, however, was not free.
"Hold up, her drink is on me," Andre said to the bartender, sliding onto the stool next to Selena.
"Thanks," she said. "But I only ordered a water."
Andre laughed. "I'll have to owe you one then."
"Sure. And hey, congrats to your brother, too. What an exciting time for him. He's going up north for college. That's very daring for a desert boy!"
"I don't think he's realized yet how cold the winters get there," Andre said.
Tumblr media
"So where’s Luis?"
Selena shrugged. Luis had been kind of a bummer on her big night. Once upon a time, this was supposed to be his graduation night, too.
"Don't worry about him," she said. "He’s just not in a super great mood. You know he bombed his exams a few semesters ago. But his internship is going well, his boss likes him and plans to keep him on, so he barely cares about his grades anymore. Just enough to finish."
Andre knew pretty much everything about Selena's relationship with Luis. They had lots of time to talk in between their classes, while Luis stacked extra credits because he was so far behind. Andre knew about her wanting six kids, a big bustling family like her beloved grandmother, and Luis wanted “negative two” (if that were ever possible) because his parents had only ever failed him and then they died. Luis hated everything about the idea of raising children—the obligation, the noise, the expense, the babyproofing, the mess.
Selena told Andre these things in confidence, when she was lonely, when Luis spent the year busting his butt to make up his failed semester and nearly failed all over again. She expected to be lonely for another whole year while Luis finished up his courses on top of a full-time job.
Tumblr media
"I'm sticking around after graduation," she said. "Maybe we can hang out some time."
"Actually, I wish. But I’m transferring after this semester."
One friend gone. Maybe Selena would be even lonelier than she thought.
"Oh? That’s too bad," she said. "But, I mean, I suppose you wouldn't be going unless you had a good reason."
"Potomac Medical College seems like a better fit," he said. "And it’s cheaper. And my sister just had a baby, so I though I could help her out a little out there."
"You’re so sweet, Andre. It’ll be nice for her to have some family out there. I miss my family all the time. Family is so important."
"I couldn't agree more. I read that bit about your holiday dinners in the program notes. I see that for you. You'll have it some day."
“You really think?”
Tumblr media
Not with Luis, maybe, Andre thought. Only going by what Selena told him. He barely knew Luis personally. But he knew Selena, and Selena deserved to be happy and have everything she ever dreamed of. He wouldn't say most of that out loud. But on what might be the last night he ever saw her, only one thing came to mind to say. "Selena, I’m in love with you."
"Oh," she said. Selena froze, her eyes went wide, but not with surprise. No, this was not a surprise. That he had a crush on her was clear as day. It was just that she didn't actually expect him to say out loud. She'd been trying to deny it. His friendship had been so pleasant this past year. She didn't want things to become awkward. Maybe that was selfish of her.
Everything Selena told Andre was out of friendship and fondness, not love. Or, not the same kind of love he felt, she expected. Her feelings for Andre were best kept tidy and discreet. Sure, he was very handsome, and kind, and probably shared a similar outlook on life and values. But no. Selena didn't want to know. Because she loved Luis and Luis loved her back and surely love conquered all, even the most fundamental life differences.
Tumblr media
"Oh, Andre. Why?"
Andre was such a kind soul, he would only ever assume someone would take those words with only graciousness. Maybe in another life or time, Selena might have felt gracious for them.
"I’m sorry," Andre tried to say. "I just thought..."
Before Andre could finish that thought, Luis had returned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey, babe, don’t fill up on chips. I’m taking you out for a steak dinner to celebrate.”
"Steak sounds good," Selena said.
It was what it was. And maybe it wasn't a complete loss. She didn't think Luis was opposed to marriage itself. Maybe not all of her dreams were lost. Luis was her first love, only love, and four years was a lot to think about. Maybe they could make it work. Maybe he might change his mind as they grew older? She wasn't ready to contemplate the alternative.
Tumblr media
As she and Luis left, Selena tried to offer her friend one last sympathetic glance. He couldn't bear to turn his head. She understood.
