"We need a plan," said Nijel.
"We could try running again," said Rincewind.
"That doesn't solve anything!"
"Solves most things," said Rincewind.
"How far do we have to go to be safe?" said Conina.
Rincewind risked a look around the wall.
"Interesting philosophical question," he said. "I've been a long way, and I've never been safe."

(this is a repost because i think i accidentally deleted the original post :/)
fun (actually quite sad and not fun whatsoever) fact: when rincewind described what he thought was a crush on conina to himself he only listed physical "symptoms" such as fast heartbeat, feeling too hot to a "molten iron" extent and sweaty palms; he never brought up or even tried to bring up psychological stuff like being drawn to the person you have a crush on or finding some of their features or interests attractive or even something like wanting to get to know them better
he only found physical symptoms that could correspond to many different things other than infatuation and i personally think he just said to himself "well she's a woman and im a man and men are attracted to women right? therefore all this i feel must mean that im attracted to her, can't imagine anything else" but actually if you look at the aforementioned symptoms a little closer....i honestly am of the opinion he was just constantly stressed and anxious and scared on such a deep level already that he couldn't understand why was he feeling all that so he went for the only explanation available; he got so used to fear and anxiety he stopped noticing it and when it expectedly produced bad physical symptoms he already stopped even thinking about the fact that he's afraid and anxious because it became the default state of being to him; he forgot that feeling the way he feels all the time isn't normal

i do really wish pratchett would stop writing this particular type of female character that angua & sourcery's conina & good omens's anathema (though gomens was coauthored by gaiman (frowns disaprovingly at the name)) & probably others fall into though it's not a problem exclusively with the character herself but also with the way men around her act... that sort of "breasting boobily and competently around, unaware of the effects my feminine wiles have on the men I've teamed up with, and perhaps the men go humina humina humina because women are a different species to them" thing. cause I really like all 3 of the characters I've listed though I've only just met angua i love her and i think she deserves more than whatever all that is

Okay so the 'do people want this?' poll still has a few days on it but I got a good enough number of votes already and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive so DISCWORLD FIGHT CLUB is a go.
It will involve 32 participants because that works best for making even numbers of matchups. I've started a list and gotten pretty far, but I'd like to ask for some help for the last several slots. So here's who's definitely in it so far, in no particular order:
Vimes
Vetinari
Granny Weatherwax
Nanny Ogg
Ridcully
The Librarian
Rincewind
Cohen the Barbarian
Jack Jackrum
Lu Tze
Agnes Nitt
Rob Anybody
Angua
Susan
Detritus
Reg Shoe
Carrot
Moist
Otto
Nutt
Polly Perks
Mrs. Gogol
Willikins
Harry King
Dr. Whiteface (my girlfriend really wants a clown in this)
And then I thought of these as further possibilities:
Cheery
Jason Ogg
Igor (any of them)
Twoflower
Dibbler
Magrat
Rhys Rhysson
Conina
Maladict
Teppic
The Dean
Adora Belle
Lord Rust (for the lulz)
I have been thinking to limit the participants to not including gods or anthropomorphic personifications because they'd be too OP? But if like people really want Death in this or something I'll make an exception. And I don't think I want to put villain characters in it like. If Carcer was in this he'd just murder everybody and this is supposed to be a fun thing where hopefully nobody is aiming to straight up kill their opponent. Maybe I'll do another little tournament at some point like 'favorite Discworld villain' that would include those people! (But again if somebody reeeeeaaally wants their blorbo in and has a good argument for it I might make an exception.)
So what do y'all think? Got ideas for people I haven't thought of? Or out of the ones in that second list, who do you think should be in it? I can't promise I can follow everyone's suggestions if I get a lot, but if you want to give me some helpful feedback please do it in reblog tags or replies!
Thanks!

Week 6 was Sourcery! I had completely forgotten the plot of this one so it was kind of surreal - it weirdly feels a little like a horror plot, in the way Coin (the sourcerer child) is controlled by his staff and acts eerily older than he should when he does do anything. It kind of felt like Rincewind was party to a weird possession horror story on top of his usual being dragged unwillingly through fantasy tropes. Conina also rocks and I forgot about her, though her love interest sucks. This excerpt is one of the most well-known Death quotes and you know what, he’s right

Sourcery thoughts
* I know Pterry disliked this book because he felt pressured into writing another Rincewind story, but as Rincewind stories go, it's decent. I believe Rincewind as the Disc's buttmonkey a lot more in this book than I did in the first two, and it's about something bigger than just having an adventure while parodying earlier fantasy adventures.
* I have mixed thoughts about Conina. For a book written in the '80s, she's an interesting deconstruction of a fantasy action heroine, but she's also very much a narrative device. Nijel is also a bit one-note, but the two of them make an interesting pair.
*I would have liked more of Klatch and the Grand Vizier, and maybe more of the Archchancellor's hat in the latter half of the story. There are too many antagonists for any of them to get really interesting.
* Same with Coin. He (and Ipslore) deserved more attention, I think, and his ending, while understandable, is very abrupt.
* I appreciate learning a little more about three Disc's magic system, and I'm looking forward to the later Unseen University stories.
All in all, not my least favourite, but definitely near the bottom of my list.

"Talent just defines what you do," he said. "It doesn't define what you are. Deep down, I mean. When you know what you are, you can do anything."
He thought a bit more and added, "That's what makes sourcerers so powerful. The important thing is to know what you really are."
There was a pause full of philosophy.
"Rincewind?" said Conina, kindly.
"Hmm?" said Rincewind, who was still wondering how the words got into his head.
"You really are an idiot. Do you know that?"

I know asking your favourite Discworld character would probably paralyse you with indecision, so which ones would you choose to
A. Save your life
B. Have a picnic with
C. Take into another piece of media (of your choice)
D. Play Mario Kart with
E. Fight
F. Place in front of a bigot and watch the chaos unfold
G. Heckle your least favourite media with
OH GOD GOOD QUESTIONS
a) rincewind or granny weatherwax. rincewind because he has the innate ability to succeed and hate it anyway, and esme cause she’s incredibly good at everything but would probably scold me after for having to get my life saved
b) twoflower. without a doubt. I would gladly trade a few cucumber sandwiches for a bunch of random trivia
c) sorry to blorbopost again but I think rincewind would be incredibly entertaining to see in any sort of sitcom type media. or a hallmark movie I think he’d be incredibly confused by everything
d) I must beat coin (sourcerer from sourcery) in mario cart. it is a must. if he beats me then he gets to experience something of a normal childhood. win-win
e) I don’t honestly think I could beat any discworld character in a fight but I think conina (from sourcery) would be willing to teach me how to fight. and then I’d kick the shit out of that loser wizard from mort.
f) the librarian. hashtag feminist hashtag ally
g) I am sending the luggage into the universe of the avengers to eat captain america. luggage can have a little people. as a treat.
