Second Annual ‘Marvelous Game Showcase’ Delivers Exciting Updates on Fan-favorite STORY OF SEASONS and Rune Factory Series; Reveals NARUTO: Arcade Battle for
North America, and More
New Looks for Additional Titles in Development Include Opening Animation for
Monster Farming / Action Title Farmagia and Striking New Teaser for DAEMON X MACHINA: Titanic Scion
TORRANCE, Calif., — May 30, 2024 — Marvelous USA, Inc. and XSEED Games today shared a localized version of parent company Marvelous Inc.’s second annual ‘Marvelous Game Showcase,’ which debuted today at 3:00pm PT. President Suminobu Sato hosted the showcase and was joined by key members of development teams to provide updates on titles announced in last year's event, and announce new regional and global initiatives for the Marvelous family of companies.
youtube
Farmagia (formerly Project Magia): Product Manager Takehiro Ishida revealed the official title of the project, Farmagia, and presented the game’s opening animation, giving gamers an action-packed look at the cast of characters and powers they wield. Ishida-san also shared details on key characters in the game, designed by popular artist Hiro Mashima, including Ten, the protagonist who often acts before thinking; Arche, his childhood friend who balances both kindness and a competitive nature; Chica, another childhood friend with a more reserved demeanor; and Lookie-Loo, Ten’s sidekick and de-facto mascot. The title is planned for a global release in 2024.
STORY OF SEASONS: The next, as-yet-untitled entry in the beloved franchise continues its development as the team focuses on improvements to the visual presentation and natural environments. Series Manager Hikaru Nakano joined to debut a fresh look at the results of their efforts, highlighting how aspects such as updated natural lighting and festival fireworks have been improved to enhance immersion and atmosphere. The project remains in active development and will be fully revealed at a later date. In the meantime, Nakano-san confirmed new gameplay features including a player-controlled glider and the return of fan-favorite pets.
Amusement Section: Marvelous Inc. supports more than just PC and console entertainment and announced a number of new arcade initiatives including NARUTO: Arcade Battle, which will be available in North America this summer. Players will experience the world of NARUTO on a massive 50” screen, where they’ll engage in intense ninjutsu battles and collect plates to reach the highest rank they can! Arcade titles for Japan release only were also presented.
Indie Partner Lineup: The Marvelous family continues to invest in helping creative and exciting visions from smaller indie developers become a reality with global support for titles! Titles introduced for worldwide release include Bitsummit 2023 Grand Prize winner Death the Guitar, where players become an electric guitar fighting with the power of death metal to avenge their owner, planned for a 2025 release; and Moonlight Peaks, the supernatural-themed vampire farming/life sim title from Dutch developer Little Chicken, scheduled for 2026 release. One additional title, Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus, was also presented for release in Asia and Japan by Marvelous on July 28, 2024.
Rune Factory: Following a brief history on the evolution of the Rune Factory series and how it has grown across nine titles released over 18 years, Rune Factory series Director Shiro Maekawa joined the stream to reveal a new video for Rune Factory: PROJECT DRAGON sharing a look at the title’s protagonists. Players can choose to play as either Subaru or Kaguya, two new Earthmates with a twist; they will use the power of dance, rather than farming, to communicate and interact with the world around them. This new approach to interacting with the world comes with non-combat tools, including parasols and drums; series staple weapons like swords; and brand-new weapon types to experiment with, including bows and talismans.
DAEMON X MACHINA: Titanic Scion: First revealed during last year’s Marvelous Game Showcase, DAEMON X MACHINA: Titanic Scion once again closed out the show, where President Sato-san shared an evocative look at Marvelous’ First Studio’s mech-action sequel.  Additional details including platforms and a release window will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the Showcase, select STORY OF SEASONS and Rune Factory titles will be on sale for up to 60% off on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch™ through June 7, 2024.

Saw a twitter post from someone I used to admire until recently about Charles Martinet stepping down, Iwata passing away, and Reggie leaving meant that "the old Nintendo everyone grew up with is dead", they worded it differently and it came off really bad and corny.
Let me tell you something.
Nintendo used to make toys and love hotels. They used to make arcade cabinets. They Howard Philips as their north american ambassador, he's the reason we got Super Mario Bros 2 USA instead of that dreadful Lost Levels. Nintendo used to demand censorship, and demand every port to their consoles have unique content. They had Rareware. They had cartoons being made in north america with Captain Lou Albano as the voice of Mario, and he would do public service announcements in Mario costumes. We had official Nintendo magazines with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Starfox comic books published in them. If a third party game was popular enough in Japan, it was publised as a first party Nintendo game in the USA. The president of Nintendo was Hiroshi Yamauchi. And they had a very talented developer of both games and hardware named Gunpei Yokoi who tragically lost his life in 1997. Nintendo also used to be a lot better at hiding the shitty things they did, or at least they tried harder.
Nintendo is an everchanging company. You really cannot be so selective about it's history. If you think Nintendo would resemble what you loved about it in grade school, well you're probably still in school and need to stay there a bit longer. Look at the history of literally any entertainment brand and you could easily see that. It's all about taking the good changes with the bad.... and also sometimes understanding that there will be times when there is more bad than good. And that there's always a chance of recovery.

Game Spotlight #4: Bulk Slash (1997)
Tumblr media
Acquired Stardust’s first spotlight on a Sega Saturn game! Come join Ash as she takes a look at a game that never made it outside of Japan with 1997′s Bulk Slash!
The Sega Saturn has long been a fascinating subject to me, its rise and fall perhaps the culmination of a whirlwind of internal company politics and a rapidly changing landscape of both hardware and software. The attitude among gamers well into the 6th generation of consoles was as though its failure was a foregone conclusion not through any nuanced variety of factors, but because “duh, the Saturn sucked!”, the sort of take that time and hindsight allows to fester into a comfortable, easily repeatable opinion that you’ve heard enough people say that you too assume must be true.
But I’m happy to report that in my time experiencing a variety of titles on the Saturn in an attempt to satiate my longstanding curiosity, the Saturn doesn’t suck! In fact, the Saturn has been something that has consistently delivered games that surpassed my expectations. Daytona USA brought home a legendary racing title with a soundtrack as infamous as it is glorious (I’m personally of the opinion that Takenobu Mitsuyoshi is a genius and his involvement in anything always makes me happy), Capcom’s legendary run of fighting games was captured almost in its entirety on the Saturn, having ports of Street Fighter 2, the entire run of the Street Fighter Alpha series as well as Darkstalkers and what was at that time the entire selection of crossover games with Marvel, all of which looked significantly better than their Playstation port counterparts. SNK brought its own excellent array of arcade fighting game ports to home consoles in multiple King of Fighters releases alongside The Last Blade.
All of this is to say that the Saturn had something of a reputation as a system dominated by high quality arcade ports, which at the time was a significant thing to be able to say about a home console.  It’s a talking point that has settled into that comfortable space of easily repeatable factoid that may or may not be true, but in this case it is. The Sega Saturn was indeed home to high quality arcade ports, but something that’s lost in that conversation is just how many interesting, experimental and high quality titles don’t fit the mold of ‘taking something you played in the arcade and bringing it home’ - the Saturn-exclusive games. One such example is 1997′s Bulk Slash, developed by a little-known company called CAProductions in partnership with  since-defunct publisher Hudson. It was only the developer’s fourth game, and their first try at the emerging world of 3D games, a world in which conventional wisdom is that the Saturn struggled with.
Tumblr media
Bulk Slash is something of a mix of Macross and Zeta Gundam, stylistically. An action game with a mech that transforms into a jet, featuring a story about military factions causing trouble of the genocidal variety to avenge alleged oppression. Switching freely between mech and jet forms, the main character Cress pilots his conspicuously Gundam-like mech in a campaign to defeat the Gardona military which has managed to wrap up his childhood friend Riizen into its ranks through political events prior to the start of the game. Playing out across seven stages each with different goals and a boss fight to close out the mission, the player can collect various score-boosting items as well as health recovery items and weapon upgrades not unlike Contra or Metal Slug. Bulk Slash controls remarkably well for a game featuring both a humanoid combatant in its mech running around shooting and throwing grenades as well as a jet, all while not utilizing a secondary right thumbstick for camera controls, which are instead relegated to shoulder buttons on the controller. The action is fairly fast paced with an impressive frame rate, only slowing down in instances of large chained explosions going off in certain circumstances. Just as well, the graphics and art style are quite good (almost reminiscent of the rise of the recent ‘2DHD’ art style), and the soundtrack very fitting for its time though not especially memorable.
Tumblr media
Layered into the fairly standard (albeit impressive) action gameplay is the ‘M.I.S.S’ mechanic (which stands for ‘Manageable Intelligent Support System’), a collection of 7 NPCs which must be located in each of Bulk Slash’s 7 stages serving as navigators for Cress, giving direction on the location of targets and bosses. Each of these NPCs are girls of various design, occupation and personality, including one who throws lots of English phrases into her otherwise Japanese speech which is very entertaining. Bulk Slash’s M.I.S.S system is more than meets the eye however, adding light dating sim mechanics into the game, with all 7 girls having their own endings and CG art unlocked depending on the player’s score upon defeat of the game’s final boss. It’s a small thing but really goes a long way in providing an experience that’s just varied and customizable enough. Having only 7 missions, the game is not especially long and only saves after successful runs through it after defeating the final boss, which itself has a boss gauntlet before it that can be a little rough while you’re still getting used to the game but if you put time into the game you’ll soon be able to defeat them without taking too much (or even any) damage, assisted by the fact that each of them seems to have timings for which you can score a critical hit, either dealing heavy damage or sometimes even outright destroying them in one blow.
Tumblr media
Bulk Slash, as previously mentioned, was never released outside of Japan but the game is relatively simple to navigate and understand, being communicated very well visually. There was also a recent English translation patch which is a little hit or miss translation and localization-wise, but otherwise should assist people who don’t speak Japanese in understanding the story and character interactions, which is surprisingly good (and surprisingly dark at times) and a clear love letter to Universal Century Gundam.
Bulk Slash was the second Saturn game I ever played (after the all-time classic Daytona USA, for those wondering), and I’m glad it was such an early stop in the tour of the Saturn library because it shows off a lot of the strengths of the platform as well as bucking some of the usual talking points about the system, such as not doing 3D very well. It also layers in some of Japan’s big gaming trends at the time, such as dating sim elements most that most prominently and recently (at the time anyway) helped make Sakura Taisen a big hit on the platform just a year earlier. It’s a shame Bulk Slash never saw release outside of Japan as it would probably have done fairly well and be fondly remembered, and it’s definitely the sort of game that feels as though it would be pretty popular were it to have been an indie game releasing today.
A gem hidden among the stones, Bulk Slash is undoubtedly stardust.

Sega's catalog of racing games is impressive, but for those looking for truly exceptional titles, the following entries stand out among the rest.
Racing games are one of the oldest video game genres around, thrilling gamers since Magnavox Odyssey owners gave Wipeout (not that one) a go. Nearly every developer around the world has given racing games a try, with some getting more success than others. Mario Kart has sold a lot of units for Nintendo, and Gran Turismo became the biggest-selling game on Sony’s PS1.
However, it’s hard to think of a company that likes racing games more than Sega. They ruled the arcades directly with a wide range of titles that would go on to become classics in the genre. But which ones are Sega’s best racing games?
NOTE
These entries are not solely ranked by their Metascore, as this isn't always the best metric. Instead, the games listed here are ranked by their gameplay, features, thrills, and their impact on the genre, with Metascore just one aspect of their rating.
10
Sega GT 2002
Tumblr media
Metascore: 82
Developer: Wow Entertainment.
Platform: Xbox.
Released: September 2002.
The original Sega GT was meant to be the Dreamcast’s answer to Gran Turismo, and it was a good game. But it wasn’t quite the big hit Sega was looking for, selling modestly on an already modest console. Luckily, the series continued after the Dreamcast’s demise with Sega GT 2002. It was bigger, flashier, and gave players 160+ cars to work with.
The game came with an interesting range of modes, from a Gran Turismo-like Career Mode to a Chronicle Mode where players could race and tweak vintage cars from the 1960s onward. They could even earn extra cash by completing extra objectives during the race. The biggest cash prize came from getting through a race unscathed, so it favored smooth racing over stock car-like body contact.
9
Super Hang-On
Tumblr media
Metascore: 76
Developer: Sega AM-2.
Platforms: Arcade, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Sharp X68000, Nintendo 3DS, PS4.
Released: April 1987.
Picking out the best of Sega’s 1980s racing output is tricky. Power Drift brought the action up close with its zoomed-in, swaying camera. Enduro Racer had wheelies and logs to jump over. Then there was the almighty OutRun, a tricky game where players had to master the driving mechanics to reach one of its five goals within its tight time limits.
Still, as popular as they were, the biker racer Super Hang-On deserves kudos. It brought on more tracks and a turbo function to out-race the competition. Players could even choose their own music track like in OutRun. But it could get just as challenging depending on which course the player chose too. The Africa course is simple enough at 6 stages, but Europe offers a whopping 18 stages to race through.
8
Virtua Racing
Metascore: 82
Tumblr media
Developer: Sega AM-2 (original), M2 (Switch).
Platforms: Arcade, Genesis, 32X, Saturn, PS2, Switch.
Released: April 1992.
Sega was arguably the first company to make a pseudo-3D racing game with 1976’s Road Race. But when it came to actual polygonal 3D, they were beaten out by Namco’s underrated Winning Run and Atari’s stunt-filled Hard Drivin’. Yet they’re not as fondly remembered as Sega’s Virtua Racing.
It ran much faster than Hard Drivin’, looked more vibrant than Winning Run, and offered the player more bang for their buck. Players could pick multiple views over its forebears' first-person-only angle and featured 3D human NPCs during its pit sequences. VR may not have been the first 3D racer, but it was the best for its time and was certainly the most influential for the genre.
7
Scud Race
GameFAQs Score: 3.93/5 Stars
Tumblr media
Developer: Sega AM-2.
Platforms: Arcade.
Released: 1996.
After the success of Sega’s Daytona USA, people at the company expected developers AM-2 to make Daytona USA 2 next. They would eventually make a sequel in 1998, but they wanted to mix things up for 1996. So, they made the similar but different Scud Race (aka Sega Super GT). It replaced Daytona’s stock cars with GT supercars and used the snazzy new Model 3 Step 1.5 hardware over Daytona's Model 2 tech.
While many of its elements still resembled Daytona, like the HUD and select screen, the gameplay was new. It introduced the ability to accelerate while drifting, giving players the edge over other racers if they could master it (and fishtails if they couldn't). It made for thrilling races, but it would ultimately be limited to the arcades as its Dreamcast port would get canceled.
6
Sega Rally Championship
Metacritic User Score: 8.2
Tumblr media
Platform(s): Arcade , Sega Saturn , PC , Game Boy Advance , PS2
Released: October 11, 1994
Developer(s): Sega-AM3
Genre(s): Racing
Only a relatively small group of lucky arcade players really knew about Scud Race back in the day, but everyone practically heard about Sega Rally Championship. It may have only had 3 cars and 4 tracks, yet it gave players a new experience by replicating rally-style racing. For example, winning a race relied more on overtaking cars and staying within the time limit than constantly aiming for first place.
It certainly helps, but even if the player didn’t come in first on a track, their consistency could earn them enough points to win. The game was also more in-depth on how different surfaces affected the car’s handling. They could keep their grip on asphalt, then slip more on grass, then even more in mud. As simple as it sounds, it was enough to inspire other developers to make their own rally games and inspire players to get the game on the Saturn and PC.
5
F-Zero GX
Metascore: 89
Tumblr media
Platform(s): GameCube
Released: August 25, 2003
Developer(s): Amusement Vision
Genre(s): Racing
Sega making an entry in a Nintendo game is mind-blowing to look back on. It's just as surprising to learn it was specifically made by Amusement Vision, who’d later make the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series and become better known as RGG Studio. Y/LAD creator Toshihiro Nagoshi also produced many of Sega’s classic racers, like Daytona USA and Scud Race, alongside design work for Virtua Racing.
In short, odd as it seems, Nintendo knew they'd do great work with F-Zero GX. It lived up to the wild speed previous F-Zero games reached but with improved visuals, more tracks, and an infamous story mode that really ramped up the challenge. Canny players could even use Gameshark/Action Replay to access hidden tracks from its arcade equivalent, F-Zero AX, and get even more hours of ultra-speed racing.
4
Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge
GameFAQs Score: 4.27/5 Stars
Tumblr media
Developer: Sega AM-2.
Platforms: Arcade (original), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC ( Like A Dragon: Gaiden ).
Released: June 1998.
As groundbreaking as Virtua Racing was, Daytona USA was a vast improvement in graphics and gameplay. It had more cars, more impressive tracks, and adaptive AI that tailored itself towards the player’s skill level. So, it’s no wonder Sega would port and remake it multiple times, with the Saturn alone having 2 versions of the game. However, its sequel, Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge, would never leave the arcades.
The only way to play it at home is to get Like a Dragon Gaiden and find it under the new, non-license-infringing title, Sega Racing Classic 2,at the arcades. It has new drifting techniques like the ‘slingshot’, and extra modes like Grand Prix and Endurance. With much more on offer, it’s surprising that Sega never gave it a chance outside the arcades.
3
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Metascore: 82
Tumblr media
Platform(s): PS3 , PS Vita , Xbox 360 , Wii U , 3DS , PC , Android , iOS
Released: November 20, 2012
Developer(s): Sumo Digital
Genre(s): Racing
Technically, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed wasn’t made directly by Sega. Both it and its predecessor, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, were made by Sumo Digital, who previously made OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for the company, and recently made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre game. Sega just published the game for its various platforms.
Still, it’s chock-full of references to classic Sega games, right down to its soundtrack, which is full of remixes of old-school tunes. The Transform mechanic also spiced things up beyond its ‘Sega Kart’ roots. At certain points on the track, the player's car will transform into a boat or aircraft to travel on water or in the air, complete with new physics and mechanics to work with. It’s an inventive game that could do with a modern re-release.
2
F355 Challenge
Metascore: 85
Tumblr media
Developer: Sega AM-2.
Platforms: Arcade, Dreamcast, PS2.
Released: July 1999.
Sega has had a thing for Ferraris since OutRun used a Ferrari Testarossa Spider. It certainly was the start of their willingness to use actual motor licenses, from the different cars in games to the Daytona 500 NASCAR race itself. It culminated in F355 Challenge, a game that showcased producer/director Yu Suzuki’s love for the brand so much he (allegedly) raced his own Ferrari on tracks for data collection.
It also shows how closely he and AM2 replicated the F355. For 1999, it was the most realistic depiction of the car and what it’s like to race it on circuits. Combined with its use of real racing tracks, and the same real-time ‘Magic Weather’ system as Shenmue, it gave players an authentic racing experience come rain or shine, both in the arcades and at home.
1
OutRun 2
Metascore: 79
Tumblr media
Developer: Sega AM-2 (Arcade), Sumo Digital (Xbox).
Platforms: Arcade, Xbox.
Released: December 2003.
The original OutRun inspired a host of follow-ups. Some of which are just as fondly remembered, like OutRunners. Yet there was only one game that got the distinction of being OutRun’s official sequel, and it came out 17 years later, in 2003. OutRun 2 is arguably the best entry in the series too, with some preferring its souped-up re-release OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast.
O2006 had more cars and more modes, including its exclusive ‘Coast 2 Coast’ Mode. But O2 had Heart Attack mode, where performing select stunts during courses earns the player heart points. O2’s journey home via the Xbox also had better controls than O2006's home releases. It also came with tracks from Scud Race and Daytona USA 2. Players who missed out on those underrated gems could finally give them a swing via O2.

Henk Roger in Chile
Henk Roger (actual CEO with Axeley Pajitnov of The Tetris Company), is a Game Programmer, Game Designer, various games, and Chief Executive of game companies, he arrived in Chile for Festigame 2023 on the 12 and 13 of August! I went on Saturday and I got to know him, he could sign me some Bullet Proof Software (best known as B.P.S too) games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was so fantastic his interview on the main stage of FestiGames. I will tell you the trajectory of Henk Roger before and later of Tetris.
The Birth of Bullet Proof Software
Tumblr media
Bullet Proof Software (known as B.P.S) was an American/Japanese game Developer and Publisher founded by Henk Roger in 1983 in Japan. In the next year, the first game developed by B.P.S was Black Onyx, which was the first introduction of the RPG (Role Playing Game)/ Dungeon Crawler genre for the gamer Japanese before they developed games such as Dragon Quest (Enix), YS (Nihon Falcom) or Final Fantasy (Squaresoft).
Black Onyx had Inspiration from successful American RPGs like Ultima by Richard Garriot in 1981, and Wizardry by Andrew C. Greenberg and Robert Woodhead in 1981, obviously, those games are based on Dungeon & Dragon (a tabletop game created in 1974 by David Gygax and Dave Anderson), the original mother of all Rol Playing games.
Its development was for NEC-PC 88, NEC-PC 98, SEGA-1000 and, and had a sequel for Famicom called Super Black Onyx.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
B.P.S Club Ad, show the next game for PC 88 and Famicom like: -MicroGo1 (1987 developed by B.P.S for Famicom) is a Go game -Archon (they were the publisher for the PC 88/FM 77 version in 1986) -Lyrane (they were the publisher for the PC 88/FM 77 version in 1986 and 1987)
Tetris, From Russia with Love:
Tumblr media
I suggest you check the great documental: "From Russian with Love" created by BBC, but I will try to resume the story: Axeley Pajitnov's 1985 program Tetris his Electronika 60 in the Science Sovietic Academy of Moscu during the URRS, his creation did not have the proprietary right concept, the game was spread all over Europe. The game quickly arrived on different PCs until you reached a Computation Exposition in Europe. A man called Robert Stein from Andromeda Software was interested in Tetris, and he wanted to contact Axeley Pajitnov, but the Soviet government was awarded the game to negotiate with any wanted of getting the rights of commercialization for selling Tetris via Elorg, Ministry of Technology of the government.
Elorg sent the first step for negotiating to Robert Stein, but him believed that was a contract for the right of commercialization, he started selling the rights commercialization to Mirror Soft (a British Company created by the Multibilionaire Robert Maxwell), This company sold the rights to Spectrum Holobyte (game developer and Publisher in the USA) that this sold the rights to Atari Tengen (for Arcade and Console) and finally Atari Tengen sold the rights to Henk Roger from Bullet Proof Software for can sell Tetris for Famicom, during a CES of 1987.
Tumblr media
"This was the first version of Tetris for Famicom released in 1987, that didn't same NES version released in 1989 was developed by Nintendo Japan". But Elorg didn´t know about the commercialization of Tetris in anything platform until 1988, when they saw the different Tetris versions on PC. Elorg contacted Robert Stein because he traded the rights without Elorg's permission., while Mirror Soft at the same time they wanted the rights to Tetris, and Henk Roger was contacted by Hiroshi Yamauchi because Nintendo they worked on a new Console Portable: Game Boy. Henk Roger, Robert Stein, and Kevin Maxwell made a trip to URRS, to negotiate the complete rights of Tetris, without knowing each one traveled with the same intention, was a legal fight and very bureaucratic, and this scaled to the KGB, Kremlin, and finally to the Mijain Gorbachov, but Henk Roger got the exclusive rights for develop and sell the game for Game Boy and VideoGame Home Console.
