its funny that i got into building and designing a website n such after i switched from 'digital creative' (with the intention of becoming a web designer) to compsci at college. i know deep down thats for the best bc id never find people who actually understand the artistic side of designing a website n all that but part of me wishes i wasnt so constrained by the personal website format.. theres only so much you can do with a landing page thats supposed to have the same boxes in a single screen so the user doesnt need to scroll to get updates n such. plus i dont even have that much to show and present differently anyways. sigh
Tumblr media
look at this. fucking gorgeous as hell. i dont even have enough info to fill a single content box in a layout like this. god
#thinking about it you dont reeeeally need to have all the boxes on one screen i guess?#like if youre a returning visitor ur not gonna read the welcome box again and the chatbox can be tucked a bit to the side#but the updates featured and latest art ones id like to appear in the site preview at least. spark some inchrest u kno.. on my thangs#im a bit bound to the thumbnail system in neocities too tbh. personally i dont have as much motivation to check if a site updated>#>when i cant tell from the thumbnail as when it does have an obvious change in the thumb#and in some websites the things that actually would look interesting to you.. if theyre on the bottom of the page and not in the thumb?#well im gonna miss it! half the discoverability of websites is aesthetics alone and then the content if u Happen to click to see the site#i also STILL miss my old layouts. i wanna deviate from the celestial theme but idk i dont feel as attached to other themes#celestial is the one that i instantly go THATS ME!! and others are like 'i love this paletteand style' but thats not the same as recognizin#>urself in it. if i dont see myself in my own goddamn website then whats the point..#like. the monochrome black white + yellow theme i have on tumblr rn? i associate buildings and architecture with it. modernism.#and so i use this theme bc i like it. but i dont associate it with me. i associate it with those things. i like it but it doesnt relate>#>to me. or whatever fragment of an identity i think i have. so i end up feeling unattached to the website..#its like if u had a fancy prosthetic. u like it! u use it! but its not really you.. can anyone hear me. anyone at all#dextxt

The Real Path to Indie Film Success? Searchability.
Every January, indie filmmakers hold their breath. Because Sundance. The buzziest titles get six-figure deals, glowing press, and social media love. It’s the dream! Validation, visibility, and maybe even a shot at the big leagues. But for every film that premieres in Park City, hundreds more are just as good, just as heartfelt, just as bold… and completely invisible. Here’s the hard truth: your…

Hey folks, with the news that this February's Steam Next contains over 2500 games - it's pretty disappointing to say the least. While games are fantastic, and it's great that so many are being made - it also just makes it impossible for small indie games to get any sort of discoverability.
This is made worse by Generative AI which causes lists to be filled with phoned-in slop. While Steam has added an AI Generated Content Disclaimer on store pages, it's often hidden at the bottom and requires searching each store page individually.
I've written a post in their Suggestions / Ideas forum to allow players to filter out games made with Generative AI. As far as I'm concerned, it should work in a similar way to players being able to filter Adult/NSFW content.
If you have a Steam account and want to leave a comment in support, I've linked it the post below.

Demystifying the Instagram Algorithm: A Comprehensive Guide for 2024
In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, understanding the algorithms that dictate what content users see is crucial for anyone looking to build a successful presence. With Instagram being one of the most popular platforms for content creators and businesses alike, mastering its algorithm is essential for maximizing visibility and engagement. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the intricacies of the Instagram algorithm and provide actionable tips for optimizing your content strategy.
Understanding How the Algorithm Works:
First and foremost, it's essential to understand the core principles that underpin the Instagram algorithm. At its core, the algorithm is designed to prioritize content that is likely to resonate with users based on their past behavior and interactions. This means that posts with higher levels of engagement, such as likes, comments, and shares, are more likely to appear prominently in users' feeds.
Key Factors Influencing the Algorithm:
Two primary factors influence the Instagram algorithm: user behavior and post engagement. User behavior encompasses actions such as likes, comments, and shares, while post engagement refers to the interactions a post receives. By analyzing these factors, the algorithm determines the relevance and quality of content, ultimately shaping users' feed experiences.
Optimizing Your Content Strategy:
To leverage the Instagram algorithm effectively, content creators and businesses must optimize their content strategy. Here are some key tips for maximizing visibility and engagement on the platform:
Create Engaging Content: Focus on creating high-quality, visually appealing content that resonates with your target audience. Use compelling visuals, captivating captions, and relevant hashtags to grab users' attention and encourage engagement.
Post Consistently: Consistency is key on Instagram. Develop a posting schedule and stick to it to keep your audience engaged and ensure your content remains visible in users' feeds.
Use Relevant Hashtags: Hashtags are a powerful tool for increasing the discoverability of your posts. Research relevant hashtags in your niche and incorporate them strategically into your captions to expand your reach and attract new followers.
Encourage Engagement: Actively engage with your audience by responding to comments, liking and sharing user-generated content, and initiating conversations. The more engagement your posts receive, the more likely they are to be prioritized by the algorithm.
Analyze Performance Metrics: Monitor the performance of your posts using Instagram Insights to gain insights into what content resonates most with your audience. Use this data to refine your content strategy and optimize future posts for maximum impact.
By understanding the intricacies of the Instagram algorithm and implementing a strategic approach to content creation, you can enhance your visibility, attract new followers, and drive engagement on the platform. With these insights and tips, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the ever-changing landscape of social media and build a thriving presence on Instagram.

JSOTR why do you make your research locked behind a subscription? So much knowledge, lost forerver…
Hi there. We often receive questions like this, so we'd like to provide some clarity here (we have a few previous posts on here about this that are a bit outdated). Scholarly publishing and the hosting of said published content is complicated, and we see how it can appear complex from the outside.
JSTOR doesn’t own the content hosted on-platform. We're not a publisher ourselves. We’re a mission-driven nonprofit that works with publishers like university presses and scholarly societies, and we pay licensing fees to host their scholarship. Those fees go back to support scholars, editors, and academic publishing as a whole.
Institutional and personal subscriptions helps us pay those fees, digitize and preserve physical materials, maintain reliable access for millions of users, and serve libraries and students around the world—including institutions in Africa (free access), low-income countries (near-free), and correctional facilities. Our role is to make these troves of knowledge more discoverable and accessible. In many cases, hosting an item on JSTOR actually helps to ensure it isn't lost to the ages or left in storage.
Over the years, we've worked to make more items on JSTOR free to access. So far, that includes:
Open access journals and ebooks you can read and download
More than 664,000 articles published before 1923 in the U.S. (and before 1870 elsewhere)
8.5+ million articles available for free online reading when you register for a free account
Collections from Artstor, collections shared by colleges, universities and museums, and Reveal Digital’s alternative press newspapers, magazines, and activist journals
A growing number of open research reports
Articles that connect scholarship to current events and cultural contexts via JSTOR Daily
Scholarly monographs in our Path to Open pilot program, where titles from university presses are accessible to participating libraries immediately and become open access three years after publication
Plus, there are a few additional ways you can access the articles you find on JSTOR:
Some institutions offer alumni access to JSTOR
Many public libraries provide access to JSTOR
Often, authors of articles will send them to you if you contact them directly
We should also mention: JSTOR doesn’t have full control over the access terms for most of the scholarship we host. That’s up to the publishers who own the rights. These partners play a vital role in creating and curating scholarship, and we work closely with them to make as much available as possible while respecting the sustainability of their work.
All the above is to say that JSTOR is just one part of a much larger publishing ecosystem. We’re committed to our values and to doing our part in preserving the scholarly record, making as much of it available as we can. We have a team of over 350 people hard at work on article intake, metadata, search functionality, support, and more.
There’s already a lot you can explore for free, some without a log-in and even more with a free account. Start here if you’re curious!

Hi Red!
I know you mentioned how people have been reuploading your videos to tiktok and now I have actually seen a few of them I realised they started slowing them down to escape content id. This to me implies that you are talking so fast they know it would be incomprehensible if they sped it up.
Also did you guys manage to find a way to stop or report these things?
Like many content hosting websites, tiktok's approach to reporting theft is "step 1: give us your legal name and home address so we can send it straight to the person who stole from you in case they want to fight you in court or mail you a bomb!" so. no. no I have not.
fortunately I consider this to be largely a non-problem, because
(a) tiktok has been stealing my videos in cut-up bite-sized chunks for maximum viewcounts, which renders them borderline unwatchable and compels curious viewers to just seek out the unmangled original
(b) our audience is prolific enough that the comments are unilaterally full of people saying "hey this is stolen from osp on youtube go look them up". I've gotten a handful of comments on twitter saying that's how people found me in the first place, which is hilarious. real stochastic discoverability at work
(c) tiktok's views-to-money RPM conversion is tens to thousands of times worse than youtube's, so nobody's making enough of a profit to piss me off

Hi!! I just stumbled upon your account:)) I really love your fics a lot! Mostly the fluff and angsty ones 🫶🏻 And I think if I remember correctly I saw that your requests are open? If so, I do have a request! ^^
The brothers with a Gender Neutral MC who is an artist/painter.
Ever since they arrived at devildom, MC would continue to paint and draw— and of course, an artist needs to have a muse right? So the brothers began noticing that MC always drew this seemingly random person, in their sketchbooks, paintings, and such. They never really asked about it, until they found out how the person that MC always paints/draws actually used to be MC’s former lover who has passed, and still mourns for that said lover, even having a locket necklace with their painted picture on it huhu.
This could be rather bittersweet/angsty, since the brothers has grown attached to MC, but also them finding out that MC still pretty much loves their former partner :,))
(You don’t need to do this if you don’t want to! So no pressure at all ☺️)
Ahhh, thank you so much for your lovely message! It honestly means the world to me that you enjoy my writin, and the fact that you took the time to send such a heartfelt request? Truly touched my heart. Thank you again for the trust. Sending you the biggest hug!
Tumblr media
Painted in memory
The brothers with MC who is an artist/painter
Characters: Lucifer, Mammon, Leviathan, Satan, Asmodeus, Beelzebub and Belphegor.
Genre: Bittersweet / Angst / Soft Hurt-Comfort / Gn!MC
TW: Loss (mentioned), emotional vulnerability
Tumblr media
The Brothers discovers a hidden part of MC’s past. The contents reveal a past love, a lost dream, or a version of the person they never knew existed. As emotions surface, the discoverer must decide: do they bring it up, or carry the secret alone? And how will this change their relationship moving forward?
LUCIFER
Tumblr media
Lucifer first noticed it when he walked into the music room late one night, only to find you asleep on the couch, paintbrush still in hand, and a half-finished portrait resting against your knees. The subject wasn’t a demon, nor an angel, nor anyone he recognized.
At first, he said nothing. But then he saw more of them. Sketches tucked between books, half-rendered silhouettes on canvases, brush strokes soft with familiarity. Always the same face.
One evening, when you stepped away from the dining table, Mammon made a comment, half-joking, about your "mystery muse." You stiffened. Lucifer saw it. And when you finally told them, about the lover you lost in the human world, the one whose image you couldn't stop painting, whose memory lived in every color you used, he didn’t lecture. He just sat in silence, nodding once.
Later that night, he passed your room and noticed something had changed. The necklace you usually hid was resting outside your sketchbook now, open, vulnerable, with that painted face inside.
Lucifer didn’t ask questions. But his next gift to you was a new leather-bound sketchbook. It came with a note: "May your art always have a place, even when your heart aches."
MAMMON
Tumblr media
He found the locket by accident, he was not snooping, no matter what you said later. He just happened to trip and land on your desk. And, well, the sketchbook was already open...
“Oi—who’s this?” he muttered aloud, flipping pages. Dozens of drawings. All the same person. At first he thought it was some anime actor. Then he realized how careful the strokes were. How every line was drawn like you were trying to remember.
The locket confirmed it.
You came in moments later. His eyes were wide, but he said nothing. Not at first. Then, quietly: “Ya still love ‘em, huh?”
You nodded. And Mammon’s heart cracked just a bit, not from jealousy, but something softer. He reached over and closed the sketchbook, placing the locket on top. “…They were lucky, y’know? Bein’ loved by someone like you.”
From that day on, he never said another word about the drawings. But he started carrying a little pack of your favorite paints whenever you two went anywhere. “Just in case,” he’d say. "Never know when inspiration hits."
LEVIATHAN
Tumblr media
Levi caught a glimpse during a stream.
You were sitting behind him, doodling absentmindedly as he played. The moment he died in-game, he turned to whine, and saw what you were drawing.
Not a demon. Not a character. Just a soft, wistful face. “Who’s that?” he blurted out before he could stop himself.
You flinched.
The silence stretched long. Then you said it, quietly, like it still hurt. “Someone I used to love. They're… gone.”
Levi didn’t know what to say. Grief wasn’t something he could button-mash through. So he didn’t say much. He just scooted a little closer, handed you one of his fancy markers, and said:
“C-Color it in. I mean, if you want. Ill shut up.”
After that, he started coding you a little visual archive, something private, just for your artwork. “For the memories,” he called it. And maybe… a way to keep them with you, without it hurting quite so much.
SATAN
Tumblr media
Satan had always been curious. Observant. Analytical. So it wasn’t surprising he picked up on the way your fingers lingered over certain pages in your sketchbooks, the ones you never let anyone else flip through.
He waited. Patiently. Until the day he found you painting in the library, tucked between stacks of poetry books. You were quiet, focused. The figure on the canvas was serene. Familiar to you. A stranger to him.
He didn’t ask who it was. Not yet. Instead, he sat beside you, watching the way your hands moved, carefully, as if painting someone you were terrified of forgetting.
Later, over tea, you told him the truth. About the person you'd lost. The way they used to pose for your drawings. The way they smiled. How the grief still snuck up on you when you were least expecting it.
Satan didn’t offer hollow comfort. He simply listened.
And later, when you returned to your room, you found a rare poetry book sitting on your desk. Inside was a pressed flower and a bookmark labeled: "For your muse. They would’ve loved this one."
ASMODEUS
Tumblr media
Asmo had noticed long before anyone else. How your paintings shifted tone when you worked alone. The way your eyes softened when you looked at certain portraits.
He thought maybe it was an old celebrity crush at first. Then, one evening, while you were painting in your room with music playing, you didn’t hear him come in. He saw the locket open beside your brushes. And he saw the tear that dropped onto your canvas.
His heart broke for you.
Later, after you told him everything, Asmo didn’t pry. He didn’t tease. He just pulled you into his arms and said, “No wonder your art is so beautiful… you painted it with love.”
He offered to help you create a shrine, something elegant and peaceful where your art could rest. A gallery of love, he called it. He even framed one of your favorite pieces himself.
And when you cried, he held you. “You don’t have to stop loving them,” he whispered. “There’s room in your heart for the past and the present. I promise.”
BEELZEBUB
Tumblr media
Beel found one of the paintings by accident, he was helping you move canvases so you could make room for a new easel. One slipped from his arms, and he caught it before it could hit the floor.
The person in the painting looked peaceful. Familiar. Beel had seen that face before, in the way your eyes lost focus when you stared out the window too long. In the quiet sighs when no one else was looking.
He looked at you, and you nodded before he could even ask. “I miss them,” you said.
Beel didn’t say anything. He just sat beside you and offered half of his pastry. You took it. And for a while, that was enough.
Later, he asked if he could carry one of your drawings with him. “So they’re with me too,” he said. “They were someone you loved. That makes them important to me.”
BELPHEGOR
Tumblr media
Belphie noticed when you were painting late into the night. Again. He was supposed to be napping, but your light had stayed on too long. When he finally opened one eye, he saw the figure on your canvas.
“You’ve drawn them before,” he said sleepily. “Do you dream about them too?” You flinched, but nodded.
You told him everything. Belphie didn’t say much. Just rolled over onto his back and stared at the ceiling. “…It sucks, doesn’t it?” he mumbled. “Loving someone who’s not here.” You didn’t respond. But he knew you understood.
After that, he’d nap in your art room sometimes. Not to bother you, just to be there. Quiet, grounding. And once, you found him asleep with your sketchbook in his hands, cradled to his chest like something precious.
He never said it out loud. But from then on, he started painting stars with you. Not your muse, but you. You in the sky, you in dreams.
As if to say: “You’re still here. So I will be too.”

Hey there! I'm in the process of developing a VN romance game, but I currently have no idea how to go about promoting it. I have some social media pages for it, but they don't get much traction. Do you have any tips for pre-release promotion and marketing? I'm thinking about Tumblr specifically because I think my target audience is more likely to be here, but tips for any social media (ex. Bluesky) would be helpful.
Thanks!
Aw, hey, thanks for reaching out! I always love seeing new romance VN projects pop up, it's exciting to see this community grow!
That said, we're probably the wrong team to ask about pre-release promotion. If you look back in our Tumblr archive (I've linked it to just show 2022 stuff, before we had enough traffic to drive 1+ posts a day), you can see that we made only one post about Obscura before it dropped and that was the day before it released. If you want to look at what I would consider an excellent pre-release campaign, take a look at @ravenstargames and how they promoted their game in advance of their Kickstarter and demo release (also check out the demo, it's excellent!!).
That said! I can offer some general advice (which got super long, sorry!!), based on my own experiences.
First things first, what do you want your social media platform to do? For us, we have a Twitter and Bluesky that we use primarily for news and updates, because those platforms are good for short messages and discoverability. We want people who find us there to follow us somewhere else (Tumblr or Discord) where there's more robust and deeper interactions. Tumblr and Discord are pretty lousy for discoverability, but they're pretty great for building deeper, lasting relationships with players!
And different platforms are helpful for different things! Tumblr is a really text-friendly platform (and image friendly, but I think basically every platform that isn't video-exclusive does images well) and has some really robust tools for interacting with others via reblogging and asks, so leaning into that kind of content can really pay off! Images are also great! Audio and video, not so much.
It's important to remember that marketing is work. Basically any studio that can afford it will hire someone to handle marketing and communication, and it's a legit job with important skills. It's okay to start slow and take your time to learn your craft! It took a long time for us to get the kind of audience and response that made this Tumblr more-or-less self-sustaining, and that's true of most marketing efforts. While you're taking your time you can also test things out, find your voice, see what kinds of posts work and what don't.
(It's also worth noting that when you're just starting out as a dev, you're going to be fighting against the normal disadvantage that no one knows what your game is going to be like and so you have to fight harder for their interest. The marketing for something like A Date With Death is extremely impressive and worth praise and attention, but Two and a Half Studios is also a really well-established romance VN studio. They have a built-in audience. Even we had a little bit of an audience from Flamebait Dating Sim, which showed that if nothing else we're at least competent goofuses. If you feel like you're swimming upstream, check if that feeling continues once you've got something playable out.)
That said, whatever platform you choose, you should be posting somewhere public semi-regularly! There's nothing quite as discouraging as seeing a cool project, checking their social media, and seeing nothing's been posted in several months. Most people will not join a Discord to check if a project is still ongoing, so if you're using Discord as your primary communication platform, post somewhere else too for the love of bob.
And be social! Don't just approach other devs because the marketing would be good, but if you like someone else's game then you can say so! In the indie sphere a rising tide lifts all boats, and so we like highlighting other cool projects (especially ones that are relevant to our players)! You'll notice I did it just a few minutes ago 😉
Besides that, there's some smaller tips:
don't be apologetic about marketing, your followers are following you because they're interested in the project
see what other teams at your scale and point in the development cycle are doing and adapt what's working to your project
be yourself! A huge advantage solo devs and tiny teams have is that they can represent themselves as authentic human beings, whereas bigger teams have to represent a company. Companies can still be fun and playful, but the vibe is different (and usually not as good)
there's a fuckton of good game marketing resources out there! A lot of it is not going to apply 1:1 to VNs, just due to the nature of the genre, but the general advice is still good. This talk about how people use Steam isn't about pre-release Tumblr or Bluesky marketing, but I'd still consider it required viewing since it's all about discovery and hooking audiences (and the section at 28:15 about indie romance authors gave me a real lightbulb moment holy moly).

Streaming Visibility Hacks for Indie Filmmakers
Once upon a time, getting into theaters or DVD shelves was the finish line. Now? It’s just the starting gate. With thousands of films uploaded to streaming platforms every year, the real challenge isn’t getting in—it’s getting found. Discovery has become the key currency in the digital age of cinema, and the gatekeepers are no longer studio execs, but algorithms and niche communities. For indie…

I will add my voice to the chorus that chronological feed is at this point one of Tumblr's biggest selling points, because chronological is a default form of ownership. I can edit my feed to match exactly my expectations by following & unfollowing who I want, because chronology as a concept is completely scrutable to me. Algorithms are fine as everything is an algorithm; its the lack of comprehensibility and agency most platforms inflict on you that makes them so hostile to users who actively curate what they engage with.
I in fact think Tumblr would benefit from more feed options! I would absolutely enable deviations from the chronology based on the people I follow and the moods I am in - but they again would need to be under my control.
The discoverability problem is real, and I do in fact think that there should be better ways. I don't object to the "you may also like" in the corner for example. In reality Tumblr's search functions are the place to do this; they aren't as bad as many claim but they aren't great, they are exactly the choice-focused place to surface new blogs. Make that tool better and I will find others like me and give them a shot.
But. Another thing that makes tumblr great is the fact that it is 'community' based over 'content' based. I follow the people I follow, and they follow me, because we interacted with each other over time. It is a facsimile of actual socializing; you make a few comments on a post, you build up the courage for a reblog or two, you are discoursing, you tag them on a meme, now you are mutuals. Content creators are not community members - that is a hierarchical relationship, the 'lead' and the 'fan', and is defined by parasocial and weak connections. Tumblr can be more than one thing ofc, I follow some art blogs who never talk to their followers, that is a content-follow. But in the main I don't think most people want their community-based feed structure to be disrupted by attempts to content-itize it.
This is again one of Tumblr's strengths - every other site (besides partially Facebook) has pivoted to content-style models over community-style models due to inherent winner-take-all dynamics and greater monetization applications. But Tumblr cannot chase YouTube, it is going to lose, YouTube already exists. I don't see much of anything in that post that recognizes that, and that is imo a huge mistake.

Hello, lovely Bunal Dzi art. I would like to point out that in recent years there's been increasing amount of close cases of people getting into legal trouble for their quite harmless things about bungous, whether it's BSD, Bunal, Isekai Shikkaku etc. So that's why especially in Japanese fandoms it's been a huge deal to avoid mentioning the characters' full names, and instead use abbreviations or nicknames to separate the characters from the irl authors. This is also used in the international fandom by people, why are aware of the possible problems. So tagging content would be more like the series name, and for character "Bunal dzi" or "Bunal Dazai", but never ever include the tag "Dazai Osamu", as that will make you discoverable by normal people, who some are ones that totally shouldn't see anime twinks (unless if you are ready to get legally sued by some authors' relatives, as it has happened few times). This is very old practise, but many in BSD fandom don't seem to know it or be aware how even their fandom has caused trouble to scholars and other regular people. This is just a kind heads up, nothing else. But I hope you will consider this and spread the word, as even currently there is one Japanese 20 years old girl about to face legal case by close relatives of certain guy who is a character in Bunal and few other bungou series (not in BSD, though).
Few posts that explain the tagging stuff, and overall fandom behavior that should be followed: https://www.tumblr.com/peachy-jeans/614451965120937984/didnt-think-id-have-to-make-this-post-here-but
