"Is social media designed to reward people for acting badly?
The answer is clearly yes, given that the reward structure on social media platforms relies on popularity, as indicated by the number of responses – likes and comments – a post receives from other users. Black-box algorithms then further amplify the spread of posts that have attracted attention.
Sharing widely read content, by itself, isn’t a problem. But it becomes a problem when attention-getting, controversial content is prioritized by design. Given the design of social media sites, users form habits to automatically share the most engaging information regardless of its accuracy and potential harm. Offensive statements, attacks on out groups and false news are amplified, and misinformation often spreads further and faster than the truth.
We are two social psychologists and a marketing scholar. Our research, presented at the 2023 Nobel Prize Summit, shows that social media actually has the ability to create user habits to share high-quality content. After a few tweaks to the reward structure of social media platforms, users begin to share information that is accurate and fact-based...
Re-targeting rewards
To investigate the effect of a new reward structure, we gave financial rewards to some users for sharing accurate content and not sharing misinformation. These financial rewards simulated the positive social feedback, such as likes, that users typically receive when they share content on platforms. In essence, we created a new reward structure based on accuracy instead of attention.
As on popular social media platforms, participants in our research learned what got rewarded by sharing information and observing the outcome, without being explicitly informed of the rewards beforehand. This means that the intervention did not change the users’ goals, just their online experiences. After the change in reward structure, participants shared significantly more content that was accurate. More remarkably, users continued to share accurate content even after we removed rewards for accuracy in a subsequent round of testing. These results show that users can be given incentives to share accurate information as a matter of habit.
A different group of users received rewards for sharing misinformation and for not sharing accurate content. Surprisingly, their sharing most resembled that of users who shared news as they normally would, without any financial reward. The striking similarity between these groups reveals that social media platforms encourage users to share attention-getting content that engages others at the expense of accuracy and safety...
Doing right and doing well
Our approach, using the existing rewards on social media to create incentives for accuracy, tackles misinformation spread without significantly disrupting the sites’ business model. This has the additional advantage of altering rewards instead of introducing content restrictions, which are often controversial and costly in financial and human terms.
Implementing our proposed reward system for news sharing carries minimal costs and can be easily integrated into existing platforms. The key idea is to provide users with rewards in the form of social recognition when they share accurate news content. This can be achieved by introducing response buttons to indicate trust and accuracy. By incorporating social recognition for accurate content, algorithms that amplify popular content can leverage crowdsourcing to identify and amplify truthful information.
Both sides of the political aisle now agree that social media has challenges, and our data pinpoints the root of the problem: the design of social media platforms."

Dear NaNoWriMo Community Members,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your inquiries about the forums, your support, offers to volunteer, and your legitimate concerns.
Our inbox has been flooded, and we appreciate all of the thoughtful responses from participants and volunteers who genuinely care about NaNoWriMo, our fellow writers, and the community as we do. It is impossible to respond to each message individually, but we wanted to let you all know we are working with purpose and sincerity.
Please see below the breakdown of the work that has been done since we last shared an update with the community. Our intention is to keep you abreast of all we are doing to make NaNoWriMo a better, safer, place:
We’ve overseen a full-scale review of business practices led by former Board Member, Kilby Blades, who has stepped in to assist the organization on an interim basis.  
We’ve begun to implement new procedures around community safety, including:
Full revision and legal review of our employee handbook and codes of conduct.
Full revision and legal review of our Municipal Liaison(ML) agreement.
Development of a formal contract agreement for all (non-ML) Volunteers.
Development of a stricter vetting process for all volunteers (which includes identity verification and background checks, wherever necessary).
Licensing of a digital constituent management system that will enhance volunteer management capabilities.
Comprehensive background checks for all current employees.
Checks and balances to ensure that standards of conduct and ethics are adhered to (e.g., better leadership training, volunteer training, tech mechanisms, and active oversight).
We’ve made staffing changes and revised our staffing plan.
We have rescoped certain roles and initiated some staffing changes. (However, certain employees who left the organization voluntarily are in pursuit of their next opportunities.)
We believe that learning from this moment through addressing skill gaps in the organization is healthy and we will go through a hiring process to fill necessary gaps in open roles.
We’ve listened to other community feedback and are still in listening mode.
We’ve disabled the mechanism on the YWP website that allows users to self-identify as educators for the purpose of creating classrooms, and we are researching mechanisms that will allow us to verify adults as educators.
We’ve revised our technology roadmap to address usability issues and are hoping to introduce new features in 2024.
We are midway through a deep dive on forums and forum moderation; this has included benchmarking with other organizations with similar challenges.
In February, we will hold focus groups for continuing MLs. We are also thinking through the logistics of Town Hall meetings and other gatherings.
We’ve processed dozens of pages of community member feedback and are integrating it into our thinking.
With the staffing changes mentioned above, we are open to hearing from those of you who have reached out with offers to help and/or be a part of the organization’s future. Get notified about future job opportunities at NaNoWriMo.

So what is this project?
As an excuse to force myself to read more comics and frustration at the constant butchering/overcomplication of my favorite comic characters (an issue every comic reader understands all too well), I started a personal project purely for myself: my own personal AU of the Marvel Universe.
However, I got an itch to actually share it somewhere with other people so here we are! (I also may have gotten inspired by Roy Westerman's Earth-27 project, which is a similar idea using the DC Universe)
Okay, when you say AU Marvel Universe what exactly do you mean? What makes it different from the regular Marvel Comics continuity?
With this AU, I have a few main goals:
Combine/use the lore from the many different adaptations and continuities of Marvel characters to make their most realized versions, ones that are narratively rich and hone in on the core of each of those characters' identities.
Uncomplicate/fix Marvel lore. With the amount of writers Marvel has had over decades, there's an incredible amount of retcons, unneeded "fixes" and stupid decisions. No more One More Day, Sins Past, Civil War II, or utter butchering of your favorite characters.
As a follow up to the previous point, reduce the usage of time travel and alternate universes as much as possible. As cool as the concepts are, they tend to complicate narratives, pull focus from the "main universe" heroes in the story and cheapen the stakes of the conflict (what TVTropes calls the "Expendable Alternate Universe" effect). However, their usage will be kept if it's integral to a character or narrative (ex: Cable).
ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES! If there's one thing I hate most in comics, it's that status quo is king and nothing is ever permanent. Almost every actual change or character evolution is either retconned away or brushed off. In this AU, deaths have meaning, the world progresses and moves on, and the status quo can and has changed from what you're used to.
That sounds pretty cool! However, are you an expert on every single Marvel character or the definitive authority on what are the right or wrong character elements for each of them?
Easy answer: I'm not. This project started with Spider-Man since he is my favorite hero and the one I know the most, but I sincerely do care and want to do justice to as many Marvel characters as I'm able to. With that said:
NO DECISION OR CHARACTER/WORLD ELEMENT IN THIS AU IS FINAL AND ANYTHING COULD BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!
Be it from me changing my mind on something, learning new things about a character, realizing I made a mistake/mischaracterized a character, or even community feedback; character profiles and elements might change. When they do, I'll update the relevant character posts and specify the changes made.
That sounds pretty fair. Last question: is it okay to give feedback or ask questions about the AU?
Great question imaginary Tumblr user! Not only is it okay, I encourage it! Feedback is welcomed, even criticism (as long as it's actually constructive, I'm not a perfect person either). The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in the education industry, changing it into a powerful tool for learning and adaptation. In education, AI and Neural Networks are directing a significant revolution, adding to personalized learning, automating tasks, and offering insights into student performance amid global and Indian challenges like access variations and advancing teaching methods. AI in education draws inspiration from psychological studies on learning in humans and animals, utilizing machine learning to derive knowledge from data, which is particularly beneficial in the complex educational environment due to the diverse data distribution and vast datasets available for exploration. 
In personalized and adaptive learning environments, the learning path adjusts continuously based on individual student characteristics and knowledge levels, optimizing learning outcomes conveniently. Integrating AI, big data, and network technologies is remodelling traditional classrooms into dynamic smart classrooms, increasing interactive learning experiences, and facilitating personalized education tailored to individual student needs. Neural networks in education boost feedback, assessment, and personalized learning by analyzing student data and fostering collaboration through online tools and platforms. Bringing some facts into light, the AI in the education market is expected to peak, from $3.79 U.S. dollars in 2022 to a whopping $20.54 U.S. dollars in 2027. Until today, the worldwide market for AI in education has witnessed significant growth, expanding from USD 537.3 million in 2018 to USD 3,683.5 million by 2023. According to a market forecast by Statista, in 2019, the worldwide e-learning market was valued at nearly $200 billion.  
Citing few examples, in the process of theme logo design in a research study based on a digital network learning platform, AI computer-aided art teaching model has played an important role. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model for fuzzy classification, classifies gesture images into four blur categories: motion, defocus, Gaussian, and box blur. Furthermore, a Google scholar proposed an online oral English teaching platform based on the Internet of Things (IoT) to overcome the problems of low fluency and operability of the current online oral English teaching platform. A virtual teaching environment is constructed. A spoken English teaching system is used to correct the user's pronunciation and mouth movements.  
AI has significantly strengthened education through applications like personalized learning, chatbots, virtual tutors, content recommendation systems, automated grading, and language processing tools. In India, platforms like SWAYAM has adopted AI to provide personalized learning experiences, expanding access to high-quality education. Founded in 2011, BYJU's has transformed the Indian edtech sector by leveraging Neural Networks (NN) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver personalized learning experiences, evaluating student interactions to adapt content dynamically and provide targeted support across K-12 education and competitive exam preparation globally. Founded in 2012, Coursera leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Neural Networks (NN) to lift global online learning experiences through automated grading and personalized course recommendations tailored to individual interests and career goals, thereby raising grading proficiency and student engagement while improving course completion rates. Duolingo has reformed global language education with its AI-driven platform that personalizes learning through neural networks, offering interactive features like pronunciation analysis, grammar checking, and customized practice sessions to elevate user proficiency and engagement.  
From online textbooks to remote lectures, AI is upgrading and automating various aspects of education. This progress holds huge potential for building learning outcomes for both students and educators. With AI as a valuable tool, the future of education looks promising, fostering a more efficient and inclusive learning environment for all. In conclusion, the integration of AI and NN has led the way for a new era of education, offering creative solutions to challenges, modifying the learning experience.
