hello! sorry if this is a super weird question but I was just curious, what do the characters in your comic smell like? Like before the whale gore gets into everything, I was just wondering

Honestly…PROBABLY NOT GREAT, even before there’s any whale oil or tryworks smoke involved. Like, for everyone, strong notes of dirty shirt, salt, mildew, and pine tar (ok I like the smell of pine tar but). Adelaide probably has a faint bit of castile soap about her, as she tends to have the space to do laundry more frequently—thus…Barzillai too, a little more castile than everyone else. Depending on the evening and his moods, he’ll also smell like cigar smoke when celebratory, brandy when melancholy. I feel like Lawrence ends up smelling faintly of his various essential oils and compounds he uses for Doctorin’. Laudanum and copaiba balsam and sulfur flowers and peppermint, suchlike. I like to think the sea stays in Ezra’s clothes more than others’. And Josué tends to have tobacco and pipe smoke hanging around him. And Brutality just smells like…fathomless waterlogged death.

Fun fact! Mod Bunni has anosmia, which means she has no sense of smell. So Mod Cat will be taking care of this one!

Allar— definitely has sweet tones to him. He doesn't like to have his natural scent stick out often, so he uses sweet perfumes like candy or pastries. Cotton candy is the main scent he usually uses!

Louie— he uses cheap colognes most of the time. Nothing that assaults the nostrils, though. Bergamot, oak, stuff like that. But it barely covers up the smell of smoke that lingers on his clothing.

Mica— uses expensive and very niche colognes. Definitely the type to use cologne that has a rusty undertone. Sanguine. Usually smells very good and fresh!

Josh— probably has the most "masculine" scent out of these guys! He also uses cheap cologne, but the type that doesn't fully cover up his natural musk. Not in a gross way, though!

Cinnamon Soap

Cinnamon is one of my all-time favorite scents, and I’ve always wanted to use a soap with this smell but I’ve never been able to find one. So I figured I would make my own!

Ingredients:

1 lb melt-and-pour soap base 

1 tsp ground Ceylon cinnamon

1 tbsp high-proof alcohol (optional to predilute the cinnamon powder)

1 tsp jojoba oil

+40 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil (use copaiba for sensitive skin)

Instructions:

Dilute cinnamon powder: Add the ground cinnamon and 1 to 2 tbsp high-proof alcohol into a small glass jar. 

Stir until the spice is thoroughly dispersed in the alcohol.

Divide the soap base into small cubes and place the soap cubes into a microwave-safe container or glass measuring cup. 

Melt the base in the microwave in 30-second intervals. Stir between each burst and be careful not to burn it.

Add the jojoba oil and essential oils. Mix thoroughly until the oils are well incorporated.

Pour half of the soap mixture into another measuring cup. Stir in cinnamon mixture. Stir to combine.

Allow the soap to cool and thicken slightly. If you pour while the soap base is too hot, the cinnamon will bleed into the white soap and create a uniform brown color.

Pouring both soap mixtures at the same time, fill the mold. 

Decorate each soap bar with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Allow the soap bars to cool and harden in the mold

You can let the soap sit at room temperature, which will take 1 to 2 hours, or in the refrigerator to shorten the cooling time to 30 minutes.

Once solidified, release the soap by gently pulling back the mold to break the airlock. Then pop each piece out of the mold.

Wrap your cinnamon soap bars tightly in plastic wrap to protect them from moisture

It felt both spooky and welcoming to be walking into what I coincidentally wrote yesterday Yaprak Yaprak Kara Toprak (Leaf by Leaf Black Earth).

"Morelos’s second installation, El abrazo, consists of a vast earthen monolith that hovers above the ground and pushes against the ceiling. El abrazo draws on the visual language of religious structures such as mastabas, temples, and ziggurats, as well as the mountainous topographies that inspire these forms." "In a text accompanying the exhibition (see “Instructions to touch the earth” on the reverse of this brochure), Morelos invites visitors to gently caress the surfaces of El abrazo, and to note that “to touch the earth is to be touched by her.” The sensuality of this encounter is heightened by the fragrant aroma emanating from the earth, which the artist has enriched with cinnamon and clove (both used for their natural antifungal properties), in addition to copaiba, a medicinal tree extract commonly used in the Amazon, and other accents. she has as much respect for insects and arachnids and etc as she has for the creatures usually considered 'cute' by people. they have a role to play in maintaining ecosystems, no matter how creepy they might look, and generally speaking, she's not squeamish. of course, cockroaches in your house is not the same as, idk, centipedes in their natural habitat. still, her approach to things is keeping your environment tidy to avoid the creepy crawlies going there in the first place, and if they end up there anyway, then you deal with them (the cockroaches are dying, but spiders for example are probably captured and released somewhere else). she never uses insecticides though and even mosquito repellents are natural things like copaiba oil rather than chemicals.
