DIY: Picture-Perfect Lantern Centerpieces

Fill painted lanterns with photos, and bring on the memories.

You Will Need

Lanterns

Spray Primer  (We used Krylon ColorMaster Primer)

Paint (We used a sample pint of Mantis Green by Benjamin Moore)

1/2″ angled brush

Photos

Flameless candles (optional)

Directions

Step 1: Use painter's tape to cover the glass panes of a lantern.

Step 2: Apply an even coat of a spray-on primer.  Then paint desired color with a ½-inch angled brush. We used a sample pint of Mantis Green by Benjamin Moore. When dry, remove tape.

Step 3: Measure the glass panes on the lantern, and print photos to corresponding dimensions. (Style tip: Print all photos in black and white for a cohesive look.)

Step 4: Secure photos on the inside with transparent tape. Illuminate with flameless candles.

a day from now you were gonna be married, crazy I know, but there you were, walking into a venue you had spent six whole months planning.

You didn't expect you'd have cared this much about appearances or about the reception, you always were a "family and close friends" kinda gal, but somehow, you had found yourself wanting for everything to be perfect for what you already knew was going to be the happiest day of your life.

But of course, you couldn't compare to Pedro when it came to wanting everything to fall precisely into place.

he... well he had quite literally become a groomzilla.

And it's not like he had taken many of the decisions, it was all you, hell, if you had given him control there was a high possibility you were gonna end up walking down the aisle with a country band playing in the background.

But still, if there was one thing out of place, if one person didn't do exactly what you had asked of them... oof... good luck to them.

"oh my god" you breathed, looking around the room 

"wow" he joined in your fascination.

"This is amazing" A giggle fled your throat.

It really was.

everything was exactly how you had envisioned it.

The tablecloths, the mahogany chairs, the subtle but still awfully pretty centerpieces, the handwritten menus...

It was just perfect. 

"Well it was all you sweetheart" he smiled, taking your hand in his and kissing the crown of your head

"with your help" you added

"Of course" his face brightened as he chuckled "Imagine if hadn't picked this color for the napkins" he joked

"well, they are very pretty napkins..."

"thank you" he gave you a small bow, stifling a grin.

"So is everything right?" he asked, looking around even though he didn't really have a clear idea of how it should have even looked like.

"yeah I-" you stopped yourself, your glance falling to the flowers adorning the bottom of each table "Oh" you frowned

"what?"

there it was, the -who the fuck fucked up?- tone, planning a wedding had for some reason stemmed from him

"I just-" you glanced at him "don't worry it's nothing"

"no baby, tell me, what's wrong?"

"I just- I ordered purple lilies, not white" you pointed to the mishap.

He followed your finger and with a tick of his jaw and a frown of his forehead, the same Pedro that had caused the "chair accident" was back.

Now, your whole friend group had been calling it that since you told them about it, but the "chair accident", or if you'd like - the time you had to make him wait outside the store because he was getting way too angry at the guy when he had told you he couldn't get the chairs you wanted in time- was just one of the many "incidents" he would have caused along the way.

Pedro wanted everything to be perfect, and the truth be told, he didn't want so for himself, no, he wanted everything to be like you wanted it to, he wanted everything to be perfect for you.

So with time, you had gotten quite good at analyzing and realizing when that part of him was surfacing again, as if he was a non-fully tamed tiger and you, his tamer.

"we gotta call the guy" he started

"they can't change them in just a da-"

"who gets something like this wrong? there's a big difference between white and purple, how did we get the only colorblind florist in the world!?"

"baby" you snorted "it's really not that important"

"yes it is, You wanted purple lilies and we didn't get purple lilies, that's a problem in my book" he shook his head, already pulling out his phone " I'm gonna call him right now and-"

"Pedro," you took a step to close the gap between you and place a hand on his chest soothingly "I promise you, baby, it is not a big deal. I like them white too"

"Are you just saying that just so that I won't make a scene?"

"maybe..." you smiled "but also because it's the truth"

He tilted his head, not fully convinced

"I love them" You leaned up to come face-to-face with him, wrapping your arms around the back of his neck "I promise"

"you're trying to distract me"

"is it working?" you laughed softly

"Yes. Yes, it is" he confessed, forgetting all about the flowers the moment his lips met with yours.

How much do you like selling on Etsy? I've been thinking about opening up a shop to sell my own taxidermy art on there. It's just that I've heard Etsy is known for shutting down shops randomly and people keep saying that Etsy's "dying"/on a downward slope. I also heard there are a lot of scammers... What are your thoughts?

Hi Anon!

My feelings about Etsy have definitely gotten sorta complicated over the last few years.

First of all, I love my little shop. I love getting to interact with so many sweet and lovely folks and I love getting to send my art and oddities all over the country. I’ve sold pieces through Etsy that have ended up in museums and classrooms, as props in movies and television shows, that have been centerpieces in peoples’ weddings, that were birthday gifts for little kids just getting into nature and science, and so many other neat and wonderful places with some really awesome people who I am forever grateful to for supporting my shop.

That said, in my opinion, Etsy is definitely not what it used to be and there are plenty of things I wish they would do differently to make the site better for sellers and buyers. I think their search feature needs a total revamp and they also need to crack down on all the sellers flooding the site with mass-produced merchandise. Their recent decision that AI-made content is totally fine by them is another serious bummer and a slap in the face to the real artists using their platform. The list goes on.

In spite of all that, if you want to open an online shop, then Etsy is still probably the best site to do it on, at least starting out. It’s a trusted, household name and they have millions of users from all around the world so you are going to be getting much more traffic than if you were just starting your own site from scratch without any sort of social media following.

You'll still likely want to grow a social media presence (if you haven't already) to help drive traffic to your site rather than rely on Etsy alone for this. A great deal of my own shop's traffic comes from Tumblr and what little I post on other social media. This is something I really should be better about as I've kinda shot myself in the foot by not utilizing them more over the years...but I just really don't like using TikTok or Instagram haha.

From what I’ve seen, vulture culture stuff-wise, Etsy mostly gets mad at folks who sell wet specimens or other more “gruesome” type of oddities and don’t blur the main listing photo or do something similar to warn folks that it could be something they might find upsetting. They also prohibit the sale of some animal parts that are perfectly legal to buy and sell provided you follow the laws around them. So if a seller was listing some of those items, while legal elsewhere, that might have gotten them in trouble with Etsy. Here's a list of what they don't allow. And here's a more specific list of their prohibited animal parts. Note bear, wolf, and zebra are on the list—it's perfectly legal to sell parts from some of these animals in some places provided you follow the laws around doing so, but Etsy doesn't allow it at all. I've had them remove listings for domestic dog and cat skulls in the past as well—the law there is in regards to selling dog and cat fur (which is illegal in the US) but Etsy seemed to think it covers bones as well which it does not.

As for scammers, don't click on suspicious links anyone sends you and watch out for people wanting to contact you outside of Etsy. Don’t swap phone numbers, email addresses, etc with people. Etsy has guides on their site on what to watch out for that it’d be good to read through.

So all of that to say that if you want to start selling your work online then I think Etsy is most likely going to be the best place to do it, at least starting out. If you want to just dip your toes in the market before opening an Etsy shop though you can always try posting a few items here or there on Instagram or one of the oddities selling groups on Facebook but in my experience at least, Etsy is still the best way to go. Then, once you build up a following, you can always start your own site or branch out beyond Etsy if you want to.

#7. abandoned Secret Service AU

ah the Secret Service AU, my white whale. I originally developed it for another fandom but it just never worked, so when I got into 9-1-1 I was like oh!! Eddie slots really well into this -- his canon backstory matched the backstory I created -- My plan was to have Eddie be the Governor of Texas, already widowed, and the rest of the 118 would make up his secret service detail during the last leg of the campaign. Buck would've saved Chris during a flash-flood in Austin, Texas à la tsunami. Eddie getting shot in the show folded in really well.

The only problem was that it was really out of character. I could never see Eddie as a politician, plus dude had a mental breakdown over Ana, he could not run a country!! I would also have to age him up and change all this other stuff. Basically, it would've be too difficult for me to suspend my disbelief to make this all work. C'est la vie.

#8. 9-1-1 What If (S7 spec script)

I'm sooo glad you asked about this one!!!! Ahh! I love reading scripts and I find writing them to be very natural bc I always focus on dialogue and blocking first and then build the scene & prose around it.

After S6 ended, I started thinking about what I wanted to see for S7 and wrote a couple scenes. Every season starts with a big event/disaster and I decided that season 7 would start with a cruise liner crash at the LA Port (Athena and Bobby were not on it!! although... hmm...)

There are some Buddie moments in the first episode to set up their relationship arc (couch shopping! couch shopping! couch shopping!), but my favorite scene so far is this madney scene:

INT. MADDIE AND CHIMNEY’S HOUSE - DAY MADDIE and CHIMNEY are sitting at their kitchen table, covered in wedding planning materials. CHIMNEY holds up swatches of fabric to show MADDIE.

CHIMNEY Okay, tell me which tablecloth you like better. MADDIE I don’t know, Howie, they all look the same to me. CHIMNEY No, they are clearly different. This one has a cooler tone and this one has a warmer tone.

MADDIE does not look impressed.

CHIMNEY.  Come on Maddie this stuff is important. MADDIE You should just let my brother help you with this. He cares much more about this wedding stuff than me. CHIMNEY No way. I am not letting ‘Clipboard Buck’ anywhere near my wedding.  MADDIE He can’t be that bad. CHIMNEY  That man is a menace to society when he has a checklist. MADDIE Chimney, the color of the tablecloth or type of centerpieces don’t matter to me. All that matters is having you and Jee-Yun with me.

CHIMNEY looks at his fiancee with a besotted expression on his face. After a beat, he turns in the direction of the living room holding up the pair of swatches.

CHIMNEY Hen, which color do you like better? Snowy Fields or Vanilla Cream?

HEN is laying on the ground with her new foster child, [NAME], approx. [age]. JEE-YUN is with them, playing with toys.

HEN Nah, do not get me involved in this. My wife planned our wedding, both times. This is her area of expertise, not mine.

The door bursts open with KAREN holding bags filled to the brim with wedding supplies. She has a wild expression on her face.

14.Who does fashion shows after a mall trip and who watches and compliments them?

Bojan does fashion shows and Jere stares with heart eyes. Bojan is also the one that sends a million pictures of their new stage fits and for someone with a pretty limited ability with the english language, Jere sure does come up with a LOT of compliments.

21.Which of their friends/family pokes fun at them for them getting flustered/affectionate?

For Bojan, all of Joker Out. There are different flavors, but they all find great fun in the way Bojan gets flustered so easily(especially when Jere's around). Jere is also fully aware of this and doesn't mind when his boyfriend blushes like a schoolgirl. Kris is, however, Bojan's #1 bully[affectionate]

Jere himself embraces it when someone tries to poke fun at him when he's being affectionate. His default answer is "yes i kiss and cuddle my boyfriend. and?" which takes a lot of the fun out of it for the (loving) bullies. Thus Elina moves on to bully Bojan because his reactions are more fun.

Mikke will groan and roll his eyes whenever he sees too much PDA, but it gets less and less serious as time passes.

27.Who would propose? What would their wedding be like? 

Now this one os a headache of mine. Because I know for sure they'd both plan on it, it's more about who manages to do it first(probably Jere because Bojan is a little ball of anxiety and would take too long to try and think of every possible outcome, while Jere's more like "it's a yes or yes question we WILL get married")

I feel like their wedding would be quite small and intimate. The closest of family and friends. Not a "rustic romantic" type of barnwedding but something a bit more modern. They'll leave the tull and jute cord details and lantern centerpieces to someone else.

But it would be in two parts. The "official" one in Finland, and then a second party in Slovenia. Mainly because not everyone can make the trip between the two countries.

hello it is so nice to hear from wren's biggest fan!! ;) yes of course i'd be all too happy to tell you about him! i will say that a lot has changed since i've spoken about him last since my story has undergone some massive renditions especially in regards to his overall role so, yeah. i won't be able to tell you everything for the sake of spoilers but i'll give you a little sample at the very least.

let's see...! pertaining to what i've changed... he's still pretty much the same personality-wise; a tenderhearted meek flower prince who would breakdown if he so much as stepped on a ladybug. despite this, he is venerated as the king of the asterian empire as king valentinus, but he is little less than a figurehead on behalf of the asterian orthodoxy, who more or less control every facet of the country under the iron thumb of the very idol they worship; the king star, canopus. wren follows a script perfectly crafted to suit canopus' standards, and he rarely leaves his genuine castle in the sky known as the cradle of heaven, so his interactions with the populace are kept clipped and neatly manicured to benefit the orthodoxy and solicit public approval. furthermore, a subgroup of the orthodoxy, as in its highest-ranking archpriests, form the "lotus-eaters", who are more or less also wren's personal guard, and they all go by aliases that take reference from some rather prominent figures in greek mythology.

... wren's love interest, sisyphus, is one of these! their relationship... it was fraught with poor beginnings due to narrative reasons, but they gradually warm up to each other over time and develop a stonelike bond cemented in mutual understanding of each other's circumstances since they both suffer from some identity issues as a result of the fact that they're both cursed with amnesia to some degree... also they've got that autistic on autistic action going on hehe. just a flower prince and his boyfriend with ravenous shark teeth who likes to bite him affectionately <3 it hurts please help him -

wren spends most of his time in the castle's garden, as one would expect... ever preferring the company of the blooms as opposed to actual human contact. his other hobbies include hosting tea parties, writing fanfiction based on his favorite literature (he's specifically a massive fan of a series of epic chronicles known as the "saga of the dragon king," and he is particularly fascinated with the designated villain of the story... don't look at what he's written it's embarrassing it's self-indulgent and so terribly corny)... and he would also like singing, but despite being a member of the arcadian people, who are known for their incredible, borderline angelic voicework, he. well. he isn't exactly a disney princess in that regard. so many birds have fallen victim to his shrills and he just about nearly blew out canopus' eardrums once.

hmmm... what else can i say that doesn't dive too heavily into the story beats. let's see... some additional trivia... wren's birthday is april 22nd aka earth day, he's around 5'6", and my headcanon voice for him would be something along the lines of soma saito, something sweet, soft-spoken, and somewhat awkward. his favorite color is pink, he's especially fond of feminine things and has an affinity for sundresses and floppy hats, his favorite animals are deer and bunnies and his favorite types of flowers are actually unique to the universe he hails from, those being maiden's oaths... they're sort of carnation-like and come in shades of pink and white usually, and are native to the kingdom of codoslia, even representing it as its national flower... flower language suggests that you would give a maiden's oath to someone you'd swear to spend your life with, hence the name, and are often used as centerpieces in wedding bouquets as a result!

but yeah, that's about all i have to say for now! i hope that was enough to satisfy your cravings for wren content. stay tuned for more of him when i ultimately publish my novel hehe (we're getting there though actually; just a few more chapters!)
