“The eight new members of the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners had run for office promising to ‘thwart tyranny’ in their lakeside Michigan community of 300,000 people. In this case the oppressive force they aimed to thwart was the county government they now ran. It was early January, their first day in charge. An American flag held down a spot at the front of the board’s windowless meeting room. Sea-foam green carpet covered the floor.
“The new commissioners, all Republicans, swore their oaths of office on family Bibles. And then the firings began. Gone was the lawyer who had represented Ottawa County for 40 years. Gone was the county administrator who oversaw a staff of 1,800. To run the health department, they voted to install a service manager from a local HVAC company who had gained prominence as a critic of mask mandates.
“As the session entered its fourth hour, Sylvia Rhodea, the board’s new vice chair, put forward a motion to change the motto that sat atop the county’s website and graced its official stationery. ‘Whereas the vision statement of ‘Where You Belong’ has been used to promote the divisive Marxist ideology of the race, equity movement,’ Rhodea said.”

Speaking during the…
I applied for a job with my county (a subdivision of my state that is larger than a city), specifically being the person to answer emergency calls and dispatch the correct people/resources to help. Literally everyone who knows me that I mentioned this too goes, "Oh! You'd be good at that!" or some variation thereof.
I applied in the middle of December. I was told I'd be contacted in January about a test I'd have to take. It's not January anymore, so I emailed someone.
I got back an unsigned email that said they "formally apologize", but I somehow wasn't on the list of qualified candidates and that I'll be contacted for the next test. There is no indication on this email of when that will be. I responded, asking if there were even openings any more, and if so, when will the next testing be. (I note unsigned because this makes the apology more useless since I can't even point to a person that thinks I've been done wrong. I just get a faceless hr department.)
The answer this time was that those people are always in demand (that doesn't say good things about retention...) and that they guess the next test will be "sometime in the spring possibly sometime in May." They stress that this is a guess.
So if I want to work this job, after waiting 2 months, I need to wait probably another 5 months, or however long, nobody knows.
I wrote to my county council person, because either they only want to hire people who don't need to work, or they want people who consider their current jobs disposable.
Is it just me, or is this ridiculous? I understand government bureaucracy, but come on. Ancient China has these kinds of tests, and even they kept them on a predictable schedule! So, it was less hassle to get a government job in **Ancient China** than in the modern US.
This shouldn't surprise me, but the modern world manages to disappoint me in new ways all the time.
i used to live in illinois. there are several joined cities there. twin cities. the two i knew of were joined to Japanese cities.
it was a very real heartfelt thing. there were big plaques and markers.
there was a very real warmth and human connection that was uplifting.
You know....like, actuelly, You guessed it- Love.
i was just thinking wouldn't be great if towns and cities had city council membres and community membres bring proposals for this, but for Iranian cities.
i realise it might be easier after the revolution is done. but wouldn't it be expressing more Love and faith and hope if these things were put into the discussion and planning phase now?
can't You just picture it?
new city gouvernements all around Iran receiving requests to forme twin city designations?
the rejuvenation of hope and Love and connexion to the world beyond Their parte of the world?
fae court but it's a legal court, changelings are fae they leave in place of human jurors during the trial because it's the best way to prevent the trial from just becoming a bunch of fairies trying to one up the best bargain for their vote with the accused
i keep constructing elaborate political speeches in my mind. as if somehow if i could just talk to pvv-voters compellingly enough, explain to all of em why this is moronic on every level, they'd all suddenly find out that they're actually leftists at heart who just heard a few facts wrong
most of what you said makes sense, but man the “why can’t we spend our money” trope is getting old
like, come on. do you want the league to just let the club spend billions because they can? PSR is to stop unfair spending, just because your club is owned by the Saudi Arabian PIF doesn’t mean you should be able to throw their blood money at any players you want. that would be unfair and wrong.
acting like it’s some terrible injustice that the league regulates spending & so you can’t throw billions at everything and coast to the top of the league is just wild. sorry that the are financial rules that keep the league from going to shit don’t benefit your billionaire sportswashing owners. football is for the fans, not the rich & the elites
You were doing so well! And excellent to pretend to agree then bring it around to the Saudi ownership. You should have just lead with that. Cool. I hate that my club is owned by the Saudis.
But it is really in your power to stop the Saudis. You can stop using Heathrow. Becuase they are plane washing money. And don’t watch Disney because they have Mouse washed some and avoid the Marriot hotels. They probably use the same washing machines for the sheets.
I said pretending it’s about saving clubs from mad spending when our owners could literally pay in diamonds is disingenuous. I don’t even care about buying a squad, I want an academy and an organic team. But it’s exactly as disingenuous to pretend PSR isn’t about protecting clubs that have a a preferred relationship with the league.
Please go back and advise how hedge fund owners (which are full of gulf money) is saving football from the elites for the common man.
The common man is watching the games on a VPN because he can’t afford all the different platforms needed to view the games. The common man is using the food banks that the Newcastle City Council asked the PIF to help stock. Shit is fucked and pretending that the Prem cares about sustainability rules from some noble goal of the grassroots game and the fans is laughable.

A place of terror when I was a child, as it was filled with doctor and dentist offices. That terror may remain, but now it is now occupied by city government.
