Hello fellow horror fans and academics! I'm creating a course syllabus and I would like your help to make it more international. Please recommend any horror film NOT in English dealing with Questioning Reality (eg. paranoia, gaslighting, hallucinations, insanity) , Breaking Reality (eg. cosmic horror, possession) or Accepting Reality (eg. Trauma, Return of the Repressed). These can be from any country, decade and subgenre. I'm also accepting films that are not strictly horror but can be read through a horror lense in this context. I'm also accepting recommendations for journal articles or other scholarly texts.
Thank you!
(I'm very consciously using the term "insanity" here to differentiate real word mental illnesses from how film approaches mental illness as a source and agent of horror)

Going to college as a nontraditional student with an office job is kinda funny bc now when a professor messes things up in a way that fucks me over instead of being like "omg this authority figure is so unfair 😭" I'm approaching it more with the vibe of like "if Karen from Accounting doesn't fix this mistake that's hindering my work after my third passive aggressive email I'm going to CC her boss"
#my professor has multiple things messed up on her online course that are actively preventing me from preparing for the midterm exam#1. the notes she uploaded for last weeks lesson are in an unviewable format (its a .bin file? she converted an image to binary code??)#2. she hasnt uploaded the content for this weeks lesson yet. and that content is going to be tested on the midterm#3. both her syllabus and the review guide she uploaded mention a pre-midterm test thats worth 2% of our grade#and i think is supposed to help us prepare. but she hasnt uploaded that or even mentioned it at all?#4. the exam itself isnt in blackboard yet. which wouldnt really be a cause for alarm if it was any other professor#i would just assume they were probably waiting to upload it until the day of the exam#but given everything else shes messed up so far im worried she messed something up with that too and it wont get uploaded at all#so. she said in the syllabus that we should message her directly in blackboard with any questions and she'll respond within 48 hours#but my first message was sent on friday. it is now tuesday#she said to send a follow up if she doesnt respond within 48 hours. i sent a follow up yesterday morning and she still hasnt responded#and im not going to wait another 48 hours when the exam is in 3 days and she still hasnt even uploaded the final lesson that will be on it#so. shes getting a text from me at the phone number she listed now like#if she doesnt respond to that within a few hours then i might call#and if she doesnt respond to THAT then im going to put it in an email and CC the head of her department or smth#bc we NEED to be able to prepare for the midterm. its THIS WEEK. some people are actually scheduled only TWO days from now#its already bullshit that shes including this lesson on the midterm when the due date for it is AFTER the exam#but then shes also THREE DAYS LATE (so far) uploading it??#AND she hasnt uploaded the pre-test or even mentioned it at all???#rambling#this professor is gonna get a BAD review from me man#its already bad enough that her online course is structured so poorly that its hard to even tell what we should be doing each week#and now this shit

Remember this? Well, you all got a sequel you never asked for.
Finally after 182 days of Duolingo, I have successfully completed the Chinese course (not including the Hanzi and Pinyin practices of course) and thus I must celebrate with this doodle.
还, 哈哈。One's language learning journey doesn't stop here...

hot take: if you don’t list physical activity as a requirement in your syllabus, you should not be able to make your students do it. even if they can speak to you to opt out, you should not be able to do that. because no one should have to fucking explain their disability or health issues or whatever to you for the sake of one singular assignment that you made up yesterday for a writing class. hot fucking take apparently.
#cas posts#i am SEETHING with rage#i plan my day around walking as little as possible#so that my body can function and i can get things done#and i should not randomly have it sprung on me that i have to walk somewhere and back#no one should#because that’s a ridiculous expectation!#and i don’t owe you an explanation of something that shouldn’t affect the course!#because it wasn’t in the GODDAMN SYLLABUS#and thank god she is a nice prof and let my friend change places#but what if she wasn’t?#this sets a horrible precedent#what if a prof wanted disability documentation a student didn’t have because getting diagnosed with chronic illness is really fucking hard?#i am so angry#im enraged#i hate this stupid fucking campus#got sent to the same building as the creep too#like thanks.#i don’t feel safe walking anywhere alone even in the daytime and this prof knows that!#bc this campus is full of literal scum!#but yeah this was a great idea.#and im sure we’re all going to get such good creativity out of it.#oh. my. god.

I keep meaning to do another set of these only with academic tweets, but I think the academic tweets would be funnier with pics of the Marlowe version and I am too lazy to make screencaps (the vast majority of images out there are gifs and idk how to paste things on gifs).
Anyway, here's one that definitely works better in the Goetheverse.
#the goetheverse encompasses the operatic versions that are based on him which is nearly all of them#hot faust summer#la damnation de faust#look i get WHY mad scientist stories use faust as a template#there's a lot to say about that especially in the marlowe version#I taught a course on science fiction in grad school and had doctor faustus as the first thing on the syllabus#(my students did not appreciate this at all)#i still stand by faust being fundamentally a mad humanist 😉

how to phrase "you missed seven classes which is 25% of the course and that's why you didn't get an A in the class even though your written work was good" in a way that won't come back to bite me in the ass
#it's in the syllabus that they get three absences without penalty or question but after that it starts impacting their grade#but i feel like he's going to hit me back with 'well then why didn't you warn me when i was at three?'#i don't know man! maybe because you should have retained the information in the syllabus and also not missed 7 classes#i feel bad because it does seem like this kid struggles with medical issues#but he needed to have absences related to that cleared by his dean's office—also mentioned in the syllabus#most of my students are not humanities majors so their classes are mostly lecture-based and not discussion-based#and in those huge lecture courses absences probably don't count as much#but how would it be fair to my students who did show up almost every class and participated#but maybe were not such great writers#if they got B+s or Bs in the class but a kid who missed seven classes gets an A?#especially when it's in! the! syllabus!#i just know he'll be frustrated that he wasn't 'told' or 'warned'#and i don't know how to make myself feel not guilty about that even though it's his responsibility to know the course policies#grad posting

After finishing my essay, my summer courses will be over !!!
#my ramblings#excited for fall semester since two courses of mine are things i am really into!! (get to have one of my previous professors again too)#i am overly cautious about saying what my courses are publicly because. what if someone finds me based on syllabus and course title haha#though i will talk about some of the stuff i learn for sure#for the other courses i have i heard good things about the professors and i know one of them from a philosophy event#as cool as the courses i have for fall semester my brain needs to rest from academics for a bit between summer and fall

I’m still a little nervous about teaching again for the first time in a long time but I’m also feeling really optimistic about this summer class!! I think for whatever reason I tend to overestimate both how equipped students are to do research and how prepared their mentors are to provide a well-structured experience for them. but as I’ve been talking with students and mentors and reading the students’ pre-summer survey results I’m like ohhh wait that’s right most people do NOT have good systems for managing this kind of work and even a little bit of extra support around stuff like project management and communicating with your mentor goes a LONG way. and if you offer even more structure and guidance you can really have a HUGE impact on students’ learning. so I have decided that moving forward I will choose to feel confident that I will have something valuable to offer these students.
#summer syllabus is now finalized whoohoo#the one-day event is basically done - I have all the pieces in place now I just have to sit down and actually like#turn my outline into the actual activity instructions/worksheets etc#I need to do some more thinking about how I want to structure the learning communities#and then of course there is still a fair amount of work to do prepping the actual workshops#but I have a lot of material I can adapt from previous seminars#and also there’s no need to have everything planned before I start I can do some of the stuff week by week as long as I know the goals#teaching tag

in my cutthroat careerbitch era
#guy literally signed up to partner project with me a DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE#on a project I literally am already finished with.#did not ask my permission did not make any attempt to contact me#i cannot contact him because he followed 0 instructions on the syllabus#like. he just wrote his name next to mine to form a ‘group.’ again. literally direct before the deadline#and there is 0 way for me to exchange any information with him#so. sorry. I am not going to hunt down his social media and then coddle him into feeling like he contributed something#which btw would take up my saturday morning. on slack and zoom#[affirmation] I will not attempt to mitigate the consequences of this random man’s bad choice when they only affect him#instead I am going to finish today’s work and then try to enjoy my weekend#making this decision has of course made me also so tense and now i have a lingering guiltanxiety about it despite#this genuinely being somebody trying to take advantage of my work. well. foot down. line is drawn…

My intrinsic motivation for this essay is to spite the prof who didn't release the due date until a week before it was due.

forced myself to wake up and leave my warm cozy blanky at 3:30 am in the winter to speedrun my syllabus because they gave us 12 hours to prep for our endsem are yall proud of me
#not to mention ive baaaaarely gotten sleep the past few nights because its been back 2 back exams every day#forget afternoon naps i havent even been getting more than 4 hours at NIGHT#and i am a bitch that values sleep above all else#and i got no time to prep the syllabus beforehand because of all our never ending fucking assignments#including yk. the full fledged GAME they made us code from scratch in 3 weeks without teaching us anyyy of the required tools or languages#literally speedran an entire math course with everything from number theory and graph theory to fucking induction and combinatorics#in like. 4 hours and gave my endsem NOT EVEN 12 HOURS BACK AND IT WAS 50% OF OUR FUCKING GRADE#and now i have to do it againnn for the third exam in a row at 9:30 in the fucking morning#which btw i realized LAST NIGHT. because our datesheet said the exam was at 2:30 but theyre doing it in batches#so i dont even have the morning to revise and need to pull this shit#AND THEN EVEN FOR THE COURSES WHERE I SOMEHOW COVER THE ENTIRE SYLLABUS THOROUGHLY THEY WILL GIVE THE MOST OUT OF POCKET BULLSHIT#THAT YOUVE NEVER HEARD OF IN YOUR LIFE#and after THIS exam i have to speedrun linear algebra and teach it to a bunch of kids by tomorrow morning#granted that one is on me because i couldve said no but ugh#college hateposting#in other news my ex crush wore a suit yesterday and she looked so hot she almost made me relapse into lesbianism#but i digresssssss#x am rambles#man ive missed ranting about shit on tumblr i should come back here more often

why is it that in this university being a lit major feels like being 15 in a kindergarten sandbox
#“make sure your answers answer the question”#this is more patronizing than when people find out I'm autistic#and one time someone asked me if I “know what a lighthouse is” bc of the autism#this feels the same way#like. I chose this course because I already know 80% of romeo and juliet by heart#(and sure I have yet to read midsummer nights dream but I know at least a little about it)#I am not an idiot and the way this syllabus is written makes it sound like the prof expects only idiots in class#which is ironic considering the fact the syllabus has several inconsistencies#(“2 assignments worth 90% and 10% participation” but also “3 assignments worth 10-30-60%”)#but also the syllabus says I'm allowed to use generative AI in my answers as long as the AI is correct about it#like. legit. says directly in the syllabus#... well actually it says “you can use AI but dont be obvious about it”#which just reads like those anti-plagiarism “change every word into a synonym” hacks but worse#eugh#at least the syllabus also calls romeo and juliet a comedic tragedy. as they should#like fr yall. its so funny#also so romantic I legit cried#theres a reason its a classic and its not just “because someone said so”#((which. I did hear before. I have Opinions on classic literature))
