I reread "To redeem myself" and actually I am on the chapter "The trial of Griffin Sylvane" And I am asking myself how that scene goes when Valtor saves Griffin and took her out of her cell. And more important, what happend in the scene in which he hands Griffin over to Faragonda. What do they say, what are their thoughts and how bad were Griffin's injuries? Do you have anything about that?
So I always thought about doing a 'missing scene' story with this, but I didn't because I was afraid of having too many. (And now I literally make tie-in chapters like they're going out of style because I love seeing other viewpoints.)
Here's a rundown of how I see things going:
The trial is going on while Valtor is meant to be away from Obsidian. He's not been taking the "break-up" well and he knows why Griffin's not been seen and he's just not been the best to be around.
So he's been hanging out in the Under Realms with Lord Darkar during this time, trying to get a grip on himself. (And to avoid being around other members of the Coven who would revel in his misery, or who would make things worse. He's still good for missions, he just doesn't feel like socializing after them anymore.)
And the trial is happening while everyone thinks Valtor is gone because no one wants to deal with Valtor vs Griffin. (His mothers don't think he'd have had the guts to "Do what needs to be done", aka kill her, and they didn't want him to have a chance to betray them and everything they'd worked for. So they're okay with him being at Darkar's while this is going on.
Even though Darkar isn't there and is helping them. But details.
After Griffin's "trial", they have her sent to a cell to await execution... And to make sure she doesn't die before they're ready for her too. They want this to be excruciating and to make an example of her to deter more "defections" (and to send her mangled corpse to the Company as a way of saying "Fuck You").
Faragonda and the others are worried that Griffin has made it back to their designated meet-up zone to go back to the Fortress. She's contemplating forgoing the plan and searching the castle for Griffin. Hagen and Saladin are trying to talk her out of it because Obsidian is not the place for light magic to try and fight against dark magic and the realm itself will try to kill her.
Valtor has shown up, close to the designated zone because its one of the few secret places one can teleport into and out of Obsidian without being detected. And he doesn't want to be detected either, he just wants to grab a few things before leaving back to the Under Realms. (Mostly alcohol because I can see him having a brief "relationship" with it during the war in this particular time frame because his love has left him and he knows he has a child but has yet to meet them and there's constant fighting and he's just tired.)
He sees Faragonda and the others and he's confused and thinks of fighting but his brain is like "The only reason you'd be brave enough to come to here is if Salvador or Griffin brought you... So who was it and where are they?"
Faragonda, after realizing Valtor's not looking for a fight, explains the situation.
Valtor has a moment of legitimate panic (though doesn't show it because he's good at schooling his emotions, though Faragonda being a fairy can sense them). He weighs his options, pretty much has several thoughts of "not drunk enough for this bullshit" and "She always complained I was the impulsive one."
He tells the group to wait and stay hidden. He'll be back.
Valtor grew up on Obsidian. He knows how to avoid the guards and the observation spells.
He knows every nook and cranny of that castle.
And he finds Griffin.
She's sort of aware/awake, but she's not in good shape and she just barely recognizes Valtor and sort of thinks he's not real because she's been through it.
(Lysslis in particular was vicious with her and had already shown her several 'visions' of Valtor being the one to kill her. Or of him standing back while someone else did while he lambasted her about all her failures and wrongdoings.)
Valtor has to fight to keep from focusing on her wounds/how hurt she is because he knows if he doesn't, they'll be caught and it'll be worse. (Also he doesn't need to pick a fight with his Mothers. Not while they have control of him.)
So he, as carefully as he can because her back is a hot spot of blood and tender flesh that has been lightning-struck and boiled, gets her up and holds her to get her out.
(The entire time he's muttering to her about "of all the convoluted, wayward, insane plans you've come up with, this is the one that's going to get you killed", "I never want it said I was the impulsive one again", "You're lucky I still give a damn", "If our kid didn't need a proper mother...", "I have no idea how the hell you're still alive", "Stubborn fucking witch", etc.)
He gets her to Faragonda and the others, giving a glare to Hagen as he hands her to him specifically and warns him to "watch for her back, it's all an open sore".
They want to question him, but all Valtor claims is that he owes Griffin for a debt.
(He didn't want to lose her either. And he damn sure didn't want his child raised in the system. Not after it'd fucked him over.)
No one knows on the Coven side that Valtor had been there that day. In fact, as far as anyone knows, Griffin did her famous 'escape artist' tricks and got herself out.
Valtor didn't sleep for a few nights. He kept seeing her like that. Kept flip-flopping about how much of it she deserved because she did betray them, but she's also the mother of his child, but still the Coven is important but still-
As for the others: Seeing what the Coven was willing to do to Griffin, someone who had been in their Inner Circle and who had been a reliable ally to them, really cemented the fact they were becoming more and more unhinged.
It also cemented Griffin's place in the Company, as it showed she was willing to take one for the team.
Faragonda was the most upset, outside of Salvador and Theodora, worried about her friend.
The others in their group were also upset and disgusted with what had happened.
Griffin's still pretty scarred, emotionally and physically, from that "trial session". The worst parts of the physical damage managed to heal up though, thanks to technology and magic.
She was surprised by what Faragonda had told her though, about the rescue. Especially about the debt part.
She never had the heart to say she'd remembered some of the escape attempt. That Valtor had known about their girl or that he wanted her to stay with their child. She'd always assumed he'd be the sort to say "if I can't be there, neither can you."
She also could never admit to being touched that he cared enough to bring her back to them. Even when he hated her so much.

hi, bree! you know a lot about witchy history, so i’d love your input—what word would you call a group of people who get together to practice/discuss magic + spirituality, that DOESN’T imply a specific hierarchy or belief system?
Good news! There's definitely a word for that. You call it a "circle."
Think of it like a friend group. A circle of friends, a circle of witches. People you meet with to chat and share ideas and maybe even do some witchy things in a casual environment that does not require oaths of secrecy or uniformity of belief / practice.
Some witches still keep trying to call this a "coven," but it's really not. I know it might sound a bit nitpicky to say so, but the word "coven" has very specific connotations and some of the very vital particulars of covenship do not apply to the kind of gathering you describe.
For one thing, as you mentioned, a coven will have a uniformity of belief. It is understood that all the members of the coven will belong to the same tradition, or at least very similar ones. There are also vows involved, to the group and to each other. These will vary from coven to coven, but they generally involve keeping the group's secrets, not talking about the group's activities with outsiders, abiding by the rules set in place by coven leadership, and submitting to majority rule when decisions are raised. There is not always a clear hierarchy, but there may be roles assigned within the group with regard to leadership in rituals or individual responsibilities with regard to preparation, i.e. it's Person A's turn to lead the solstice ritual and Person B will prepare the altar candles.
And the main difference is that covens require initiation. With or without instruction or training, you have to be initiated into the group through some kind of formal ritual, and you have to be aware of what you're doing and consent to it. You don't just wander into a gathering and come out having accidentally joined a coven simply by being there. Circles don't require initiation, only an invitation.
(I feel like this is important to mention given that newer witches can easily be misled or manipulated into thinking they've joined a coven or that they're somehow beholden to the instructions of another witch simply because they attended an event or worked magic together, and that way lies a lot of problems. Someone tried to do it to me when I was starting out, but thankfully I knew enough to say, "No we're not a coven, I never took any vows.")
It's worth mentioning that covens, either as a group or as individuals, may participate in larger circles with solitary or independent practitioners or with other covens. I don't know how common it is, but I know it does happen.
Basically, any group of magical practitioners which gathers for craft-related purposes and does not require initiation or oaths in order to attend could be called a circle. It's not a coven unless those extra steps are taken with the knowledge and consent of everyone present. Even if you celebrate holidays together, even if you work magic together, even if you have full-scale group rituals, it's not a coven.
Hope this helps! 😊

1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 16, 20, 21 for Griffin x Valtor
1.What was their first impression of each other?
Well, the first thing that crossed Valtor's mind as he saw her was to play her. He was in front of a good looking witch and he thought she would've been swooning over him in no time. Valtor had just found his new puppet, ready to satisfy all of his ego's whims. He began flirting, but little did he know, Griffin hated his attitude. She hated his manners, everything about him seemed over stressed, emphasized and fake, he was playing a character she didn't like at all, plus she couldn't stand his bigger than life ego. Griffin could see what he was aiming at and she immediately tried to be straightforward and it turned out like "Everybody knows you're hot, but I'm here to work. I don't have time for sex."
3.Describe their relationship dynamic.
Bickering couple, they take everything as an intellectual fight and live for their bantering. Debating is their favorite activity and the topics can range between "what is best to eat for lunch" and "is the Council biased?". They tend to joke (some are very sexual) a lot, sass and sarcasm at their full potential, who can annoy the other the most is the winner.
( Valtor: Take that stuff away from my room!
Griffin: It's my plants, I live in this room now and I want them to stay with me.
Valtor: I don't care!
Griffin: Poor thing, I forgot they ruin your whole 'dandy wizard' aesthetic!
Valtor: Exactly. Buy me red roses instead, they look good with marble. Better if almost rotten, the decadence, the sweet perfume of death, you know?
Griffin: *facepalm* )
When it comes to feelings he's very closeted, but she tries to get him out of his shell.
4.What was their relationship like before they got together?
Bad. Griffin hated him and he hated her. Coven' members were annoyed by their dynamics and couldn't understand how childish their 'cracked to be power duo' was.
6. What do they love about each other?
Valtor is in love with her brain. He finds her simply brilliant and is always listening to her in awe whenever she comes up with a new plan. She's got wit and sass, her heart is as big as her brain is. He loves how she doesn't mock him for everything he does and she is willing to pay attention to his interest (something his mothers never did), so he feels comfortable enough to share his passions and doubts. He doesn't feel under scrutiny when she's around, he can be free to be and her smiles when she's proud of his doing are priceless. He loves the fact she truly cares about him and she's soo confident (it makes her so hot).
Griffin is a die hard for his charisma and she was quite surprised when he turned out to be most sensitive person she had ever met. She fell in love with his soul.
7. What do they have in common?
They are both ambitious and so into magic knowledge. Without magic and their drive for knowledge they would've never met. Their love bloomed between researches, books, ancient spells, strategies and missions, that's why even after they had gotten together, they still referred to each other as "partners" and not "boyfriend or girlfriend". Their partnership was almost sacred with a very deep bond. They're both dreamers, even though she's way more pragmatic and he's an hopeless decadent, they're prideful, vain and value their privacy. They may share some similarities and common interests (magic, history...) but their strength comes from the differences.
9. What made them realize they were in love?
They were fighting and teasing each other as always, they realized the might've liked and enjoyed that merciless bantering.
Griffin and Valtor started growing closer and their partnership got stronger and stronger as time passed. Sex came first, there was sexual attraction and they became "partners in crime with benefits". Then, after overcoming some barriers, they began to get to know each other more and more, he was finally showing her something real and she liked the fact he trusted her so much that he put aside the mask of the almighty and fabulous sorcerer from time to time. Valtor had gotten used to having her around, she was a great company and when he felt jealousy inside him for the first time by seeing her talking to another member of the Coven who had wanted her for a while, he realized that maybe it was more than just a partnership between the two of them. He hated to stay away from her and all her sides he had hated before, were now his favorites: the same witch he had thought a control freak and mean, whose now he adored the intelligence and sarcasm. Griffin knew she was slowly falling in love, but she was in denial, she believed it would've been just a fleeting crush and she tried every way to make it go away, she calculated pros and cons and looked for every single flaw in Valtor's personality to make him repulsive. But she loved those flaws. The witch was in love.
16. What do other characters think about this relationship?
Coven's members were happy they kinda stopped fighting all the time, some women (and men) were envious Griffin was his partner and lover. Griffin's friends were thrilled and found their couple really hot (where did she find such a good looking man?).
The Ancestral Witches had a controversial point of view, whilst they were satisfied they finally got along, their convergences were a blast and Valtor had a babysitter (the witches knew about his mental state, at least there was someone keeping him safe and sane now. The years before meeting Griffin had been really dark, the Ancestral were tired of the wizard self destructive behavior.) they feared the relationship might've distracted their son from fulfilling his destiny (he was created to be a weapon, not for love and kisses). They saw a threat in Griffin's figure, therefore they never treated her roughly, but always kept an eye on her. When Liliss found out of their relationship she said "This is going to end bad." Belladonna and Tharma were thrilled, Liliss was not, she knew the repercussions on their son if she ever left.
Griffin's father wasn't happy, he was worried and he tried to warn her daughter about what she was getting herself into, but she had to follow her path and he couldn't stop her from living her life and making choices (the witch was too stubborn).
Faragonda was also worried, very worried.
20. What does a typical date look like for them?
They're partners in crime, always together, and they can make a date out of nothing. A raid on a planet? That's a date. Stealing spells? Date. Spying on enemies? Another date. Theft on Eraklyion? The. Best. Date. Ever.
Whisperia is a bustling planet (I hc they lived there), there's always a ton of stuff to do. They didn't have a lot of free time, but they managed to make it worthy by going to some very classy nightclubs and going shopping (for Valtor's happiness. She's into fashion as well, but he's addicted)
He sometimes likes going to the theater and the opera (the drama queen he is), she doesn't understand a thing she's watching and it can bore her to death, but he's happy and she loves seeing him so engaged while he's explaining to her what is going on (she has to admit he's a wonderful storyteller and his humanistic culture is astonishing). She will definitely drag him to museums and scientific and political conventions where they discuss about magic and Magix's politics in a very technical way. Stargazing was another main activity, they could've spent hours talking under the dark sky (they did).
21. What’s a really significant moment in their relationship?
One of the most significant moment in their relationship was the first night they hang out together. The Ancestral were tired of their tantrums and decided it was time for them to bond, so Valtor and Griffin were forced to spend some free time together. The Witches thought it was important for their partnership to be strong also out of the battlefield, only in that way it could've unleashed its true potential. They had a new mission and it was building trust. And that night was just the beginning. (They were both slowly introduced in each other's own world). Another significant moment was Griffin seeing his demon form for the first time. It was a divide, a fracture, after that, their relationship was in free fall. Darkness became too much to handle, he was breaking, his mental health spiraling down towards insanity and she couldn't fall into pieces with him. It was toxic, his behavior, how Valtor got so obsessed with her she couldn't leave him alone for more than a minute. Griffin was sleeping next to a ticking bomb ready to implode, pressure from his mothers was too much, the demon rising, and she was afraid to hurt him.
There was no communication, she tried to understand and he erected walls, pretended everything was fine and at the same time he blamed it on himself if she was sad or angry for whatever reason. A dichotomy, the demon pursuing his mother's biddings and the man living just for her smile, fleeting sanity still standing in the name of their love.

For afteraffects au, you said that you approve of everyone ending up together, how would that even happen?? Like, how would they get on to the topic of dating eachother?
sdfhsdjkfhsd i didn’t think?? anyone would ever ask?? don’t get me wrong, it’s always been more of a fantasy than a plausible ship and i’d be kidding myself if i said it was anything more than crack! but i have daydreamed about it (it produces that sweet sweet serotonin), and it’s kinda long so i’ll put it under the cut!
in this au, i hc that witches are a lot more accepting of poly or non-monogamous relationships because it’s a core feature of a coven -- it’s like one big family! though tradition makes them seem stiff and technical in many ways, romantic affairs between witches surprisingly have a long-standing history of shirking labels in favor of doing what seems natural to them, since the idea of a coven had been around since the days of “wilder” magic. so even in the present, they’re formed between closest friends, family members, and/or romantic partners as a show of their alliance and unity, and are typically seen as “official” with at least 9 members. so, for example, the Nine Olde Witches were a coven.
so regarding our girls!! the first ppl to get together (besides hannah and barbara, i’ll get to that later) were the red team members. akko is not the kind of girl to fall in love at first sight, but she IS the kind to be incredibly open when she is in love. she fell in love with lotte’s kindness and sucy’s begrudging dependability, so one day she just said “hey!! you guys wanna date??” and they didn’t really have a reason to say no.
the green team members got together next, but they were a lot more quiet about it. constanze was very hard to read at first, and that made it hard for amanda to go any further than just the protective and selfless love she had felt for her team before. but jasna was the perfect blend of observant and comforting, so she kept them glued together long enough for amanda and conz to figure each other out!
now, hannah and barbara had been together for a couple years already; their relationship was pretty solid. but in pure sailorportian fashion, they’d been eyeing diana for just as long, though the girl never gave any indication that she was aware of this. to diana, romance was just the thin veil covering an advantageous marriage, something she grew to loathe and be wary of ever since her mother’s death. so diana held everyone vying for her attention at arm’s length for a long time.
amanda and akko became hella bros next! they spent a lot of time hanging out, and knowing they had each others’ backs no matter what helped them grow rather close. but to this point akko still had no idea of what a coven was, so amanda explained it to her. once this happened akko immediately pitched the idea to get closer to the entire green team to lotte and sucy, who were a little iffy about it at first because amanda struck them more like... a friend with benefits. a fling. they ultimately decided to try it out because they wanted to make akko happy, but they ended up really liking the green team! sucy got along well with constanze, and lotte and jasna bonded over being the shoulders to cry on. this is when they formed their first rudimentary coven: still mainly friends, but open to the idea of being more, even if their individual relationships differed (lotte and amanda were mostly platonic, constanze and sucy were starting to be romantic but not physical, etc.).
the blue team would’ve been unreachable if akko hadn’t become diana’s friend at cavendish manor; doing so opened diana’s heart a little bit, and she became a little more receptive to hannah and barbara’s affections, and talked to them more about what they were to each other. after the missile crisis, she started entertaining romantic feelings towards the red team (and the green, though she didn’t want to admit it because amanda), and after a very long discussion with all of them -- the red, green, and blue teams -- decided with h&b to join the coven. this is when they became “official”.
sorry if this was long!! there was just so much to cover dsjfhsdjkfh thank you for allowing me to indulge in my crackship

ya KNOW i love me some magic fam, something with our fav covenship?
Arella wrapped her arms around Zee’s neck and slung her legs over John’s laps. “Hello, loves of my life,” she said. “I’ve missed you.”
“We’ve only been gone for a fortnight, luv,” John said as he began massaging her calf.
“A fortnight too long,” Arella whined.
Zee dropped a kiss on her nose. “We missed you too, baby. Even if Johnny won’t admit it.”
“Hey, I never said I didn’t miss her,” John said, leaning forward to press his lips against Arella’s shoulder. “Of course I did.”

What do you think of the Fan theory about Darcy being Griffins and Valtors daughter?
I mean... Its possible. I like it well enough.
But the show (at least the earlier seasons) implied heavily at the Trix being sisters. But then they started doing retcon, at least on Icy.
And then there's the weird way they do timelines on the show.
Anyway; it's a cool theory and I have an idea playing with that that i hope to get to at some point. (But it's a heavy au because of reasons.)
