Underrated funny aspect of The View From Halfway Down is that BoJack just fucking makes up facts about his friends. Not a single fact that that we learn about anyone other than BoJack in that episode is canon and it's So fucking funny.

"All of my kills were friendly fire" well first of all if that were true then nobody would've gasped.

"I actually considered killing myself" babes stop projecting yourself onto your dead lover, it's not going to happen.

"My mum counted every carb I ate, it was hell" literally how would you know this.

Today’s topic you might ask?

The horseman/sugarman family.

Let’s start off with honey sugarman. A woman in the show I sympathize with a lot, she’s the only person in the horseman/sugarman family that wasn’t necessarily a bad person. Her character really hit me in the gut. Her lobotomy is what got me most. After crackerjack’s passing in ww2, she becomes emotional and borderline crazy, any woman would be after losing a son. Instead of letting her grieve, Joseph had her get a lobotomy simply because he didn’t want to deal with his wife’s emotions. If that isn’t already heartbreaking, the way she is after is. Her whole moment with Beatrice, who is distraught at the sight of her mother, is just so cutting and deep. She leaves it off with “why I have half a mind.” A fact, and also a confirmation that that was the rest of her life. Living in a state of unawaress and without emotions,, simply because she was a grieving mother. A good mother.

Beatrice sugarman/horseman, bojacks mother, is truly a complex character, every character in the show is. Yes she’s a bad person, but also a person who did bad things if that makes sense? I do feel bad for her, but that doesn’t excuse her actions, but it helps you understand them. She’s a classic case of generational trauma and “hurt people hurt people.” It breaks me that she could’ve loved a better life, but went down the wrong path and continued the cycle of neglect and verbal abuse. From a fragile and sweet little girl grew a cold and selfish woman. But was she completely cold and selfish? I don’t think so. In all of these characters that are bad people, there is empathy within them. Sympathy, even. This is shown in the episode we find out Henrietta is hollyhocks mother. She was angry (reasonably) and mocking when butterscotch had told her Henrietta had gotten pregnant (by him.) until he tells her “I know you hate me, bea. But please, think of the poor girl.” Her eyes softened and she did in fact think of her. She wasn’t nice about it, understandably, but she wasn’t going to let Henrietta throw her life away. “Don’t let that man poison you the way he did me.” It wasn’t that she was spiteful at the fact her husband got their maid pregnant, she still helped her regardless. Because she saw how much potential Henrietta had, how much she worked in her life and how close she was to achieving her goals. And she was going to let butterscotch ruin that for her the way he ruined Beatrice.

The type of mother she was, wasn’t acceptable to say the least. She was neglectful and verbally abusive towards bojack. Going back to honey sugarman, she told Beatrice “never love anybody as much as I loved crackerjack” if she did, she’d end up as hurt as her mother did. She took that advice, a little too seriously. What she did to bojack was horrible, and it only proves more of the generational trauma point. That’s what the entire family represents.

Sup, I just saw your “crackerjack lives au” while scrolling thru the crackerjack sugarman tag, and I’m pretty curious about it! (I actually have an au where CJ lives as well, but it turns out verrrrry differently lol). Anyway, what’s crackerjack and Bojack’s relationship like in your au?

Omg I didn’t realize you’re the person behind @bojackandherb! I’ve see your posts in the Bojack tags and I really like them, and your Declared Dead AU too! I’m sorry it took me some time to put that together and to answer this, it’s been a little while since I’ve explored this AU and I’m just now going through my whole inbox

To your question, I like to think Crackerjack and Bojack have a good relationship in this AU. Since Beatrice has pretty much spit on the family name and the Sugarmans’ original heir is still alive here, I imagine Crackerjack is running the family business with his father and is expected to take it over one day when Joseph dies. He probably has a wife and kids by now as since that’s what everyone did at the time. Maybe he’s married to the heiress of some partner business (like how Beatrice was set up with Corbin) but I imagine, as a man, he had a little more choice between the rich girls his parents had connections to and could pick one he actually liked. I like the idea of Bojack having some cousins to play with, even if they’re all older than him and find it weird that Bojack lives with their grandparents (as much as Crackerjack tries to encourage a good relationship). Crackerjack himself visits his mama and nephew often and loves taking the little boy out for ice cream, even if that strengthens Beatrice’s resentment against them both…

I’ll have to get back into this AU and draw one of their ice cream outings sometime! Maybe I’ll also draw up some concepts for Bojack’s cousins! Thank you so much!

🔥Joseph and Honey’s marriage. Do you think they were truly happy together before Crackerjack’s death, or do u think there were more issues beneath the surface, though they were still generally happy overall? Like, do u think Honey was actually okay with Joseph flirting with his secretary?

I think they were genuinely happy, but I'm unsure if said happiness would have stood the test of time. Honey was raised with the exact same ideologies as Joseph, playing subtle gender cards against her daughter in the same way her husband did: the only difference is that there was no situation that arose in which said ideologies could become harmful. As Bea was encouraged to keep her head down and not question, we can only assume that Honey was raised with the same attitude, but unlike her daughter, she didn't see anything wrong with this and complied, spreading the same ideology to her Bea without any sort of baggage and reluctance to do so.

For this reason, in a world where Crackerjack didn't die, their relationship would fail, not because they affected each other with their beliefs in the dominant ideologies, but dominant ideologies affected them. Situations arising with Crackerjack being in the army and Bea being an active feminist socialist would disrupt the household balance, and I don't know if their strong conservative beliefs would be able to cope with that.
