You shifted your fingers over the material, considering things as discreetly as you could. These were quality, fine leather, and expensive belts, but there as more to this than just getting him a gift.

You wanted something supple. Wide enough to be useful, and long enough to suit, but also nothing thin enough to hurt, and nothing so stiff as to snap.

Leather oils and proper care would help break it in without worrying about cracks in the belt itself, but you were already thinking about the sound. That was one thing you couldn't really test in a fancy store like this one.

Maybe it would be better to have one custom made. The leather worker down the street knew you well, as you, and yours, had commission quite a bit from her over the years. Still, you wanted to buy him something that would seem mundane to those gathered around.

You'd almost given up hope when you found what you needed. Minimally treated, no plastics, it was already supple, and the feel of it between your fingers was perfect. It was long enough to do what it was intended to do, and elegant enough to be worn with whatever.
