Follyglass : Unknown
It is a simple watercolor painting on silk - something that doesn’t arrest attention like the vivid sunrise scene of Mount Marcy or the carving of the Black River dragon - only a riffle of leaves and stems not much different than the thin weeds on the grounds beyond the museum’s walls, but it’s obvious that the unknown artist took care in creating the gradients that shadow the leaves into the deep greens of secret copses, and the veining could have only been accomplished by a brush comprised of a single sable hair. It is a careful observation rendered skillfully.
What causes the most interest in the painting is the title: ‘Century Bloom.’ It’s an odd title for a few reasons, chief being that no flowers bloom in the painting, though a few green knobs among the leaves suggest beauty forthcoming. Always forthcoming. Also, while there are written reports of the Century Bloom, most botanists fear the plant extinct, and some even question whether it truly existed at all.
Like the photo of the striped and loping Thylacine, the ‘Century Bloom’ seems to be history rendered flatly: a shadow extended longer by a sun touching the horizon. Both pictures have a date. 1935 is written in brown ink on Benjamin’s photo. The Century Bloom has been dated February 4, 1723. And just like the Thylacine, there have been reports - but only two - of sightings of the Century Bloom, once in Saratoga, the other in Burlington. A total of seven people said they saw it, they marveled at it’s many petals, but they would not hint at its location.
In the early hours of a Saturday when all is quiet, the painting will still be in a corner of a small unlit museum. The knobby buds will swell and watercolor petals fan outward, the magic that the unknown artist painted into it remaining unseen.

For Hazel:
Are there any simple ways to start getting into cryptobotany? Any particular resources or plants you would recommend for someone who wants to try it alongside a typical balcony garden setup?
Oh for sure! Cryptobotany is super easy to get into, but be careful! It gets addicting to see the types of plants that you can successfully grow!
If you go down to your local apothecary or gardening store and ask for Southern Magnolia seeds. Then once you have the seeds, you'll need to visit your local Witch and get some --
Let me just - it is Office policy that to practice cryptobotany you need a license or be studying for a license.
Oh. Right. I just get excited, sorry Mister Halter. You, uh, take that stuff home, plant them all together under a bloodmoon and you'll get your first cryptobotanical specimen! They're still in the Magnolia family but instead of a tree, you'll get a large vined plant. It'll bloom the most beautiful bright blue flowers, and those flowers will eventually produce sweet little purple berries you can eat! Plus, you'll likely get visited by my favorite insect. It looks like a little green dragon with dark green and red face spikes. It'll eat the flowers, but if you put out some fruit it should leave your flowers alone!

SEAMOUNT ONEIRONAUTICS! "ONEIRIC YAM (POT)"
2024
ZINE, 8 PAGES / PEN, PAPER
7 X 11 CM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEAMOUNT ONEIRONAUTICS! depicts me as a scientist studying the Oneiric Yam at the eponymous research facility, and having a “cryptobotanical breakthrough” by potting it. It suggests a laboratory setting where the yam is held, and how the audience can interact with it—by putting their ear up to it and listening.

Hmmm is fern flower is concerned cryptobotanical? That was the question I asked myself while drawing this Huha spirit for Kupala. Like no one saw fern in blossom, but everyone is looking for it. It’s technically not possible and flower itself said to have magical powers, which all sounds to me like cryptic factors. I really want to do botanical illustration for the fern flower now

I've seen a few comments that Mon Mothma's plotline doesn't seem to be progressing very far and she does not seem to have achieved anything whilst other characters have.
I believe that stagnation is the point. Of the three main threads, Cassian is actively working against the system from the outside, Luthen is playing on both sides, and Mon Mothma is trying to work within the system to bring the Empire down/champion rebel causes. We see both Cassian and Luthen achieve success to varying degrees, largely due to willingness to compromise and sacrifice.
Thus far Mon Mothma has been unwilling to do so and thus her attempts to progress have been stymied. I suspect in the final two episodes we will see her come to the inevitable realisation that it is not possible to bring down a broken and a corrupt system by working within its boundaries. A price must be paid.

"House of the Dragon" has actually been pretty good but guys, we need to talk about Aemond.
Tumblr media
Just fucking look at him. Look at this anime villain, Sephiroth-looking motherfucker. This dude is a fucking cartoon it's amazing. I cannot picture this guy doing anything but sitting in a castle smugly drinking wine whilst his enemies are tortured in his dungeons. I don't believe this actor is even wearing a wig, he just showed up to set one day, cheekbones designed by Tetsuya Nomura himself and the directors said "we gotta get this weirdo on our show."

I know Tumblr has largely become anti-MCU because Disney bad, Marvel bad, corporations churning out cookie cutter movies bad etc etc but please, PLEASE watch Ms. Marvel.
I say this as a 30-something cishet white man who has no real reference point for its authenticity but it is just such a wonderful family story. It's a rare comic book property where not only do the powers take a backseat to the civilian lives of the characters, but it is better for it. Yes, they diverge from Kamala's Inhuman origins in the comics but they trade it in for something imo much more personal. It touches on how damaging partition was and the generational trauma it left behind as well as the experiences of modern Muslims living in America.
Even besides that it just feels so fresh and entertaining and has a great cast of characters and the first few episodes exude Edgar Wright/Scott Pilgrim energy in the best way.
It's a great show and deserves your time.

:
mkay so a friend sent me this post about Love...
The last episode only shows one woman the entire episode and she’s dead, mutilated, naked, and tied up. I can handle normal Gore but that just felt next level misogynistic to only have one woman shown the entire episode and she’s dead and mutilated in a sexy way and I feel like that deserves a warning in it’s own right and wouldn’t have watched that episode if I’d known how misogynistic it is
yeah that is very true. I have discussed the episodes more in depth with another friend who watched it and I have come to the conclusion that my standards for animation stories are way lower than my standards for normal stories? mostly because I judge first and foremost by “oh art pretty!!!!” and then secondly by “huh I guess a story is happening? is there anything in it that aggressively makes me unable to watch this?” and the only one that came close to that for me was Helping Hand. I was mostly trying to pull together a list of “gore/violence or no gore/violence” and “sex or no sex” and letting people have their opinions of their own beyond that, but considering More People than the 2 or 3 I expected to actually see and care about my post seem to have seen and care about my post, I will at add that to my list? like, if people are using my list as a serious filter than I have the responsibility to update it so it’s a slightly more serious filter.
the series is defs overarchingly male-dominated as a whole -- there are 5/18 (not counting ones where all characters are robots) where there are male characters and no female characters whatsoever? and glancing over it I don’t think there are any at all -- I mean maybe Sonny’s Edge and Suits depending on how much you count needing to talk and be developed as being a character, Helping Hand if heard and developed but not seen doesn’t count -- where there are actually more female characters than male ones, and all the rest are very skewed to more male characters? like. it’s a pretty male-centric series in the first place. and they don’t terribly deal with topics that included rape well. so by the time I got to the end I was not expecting much in terms of there being anything meaningful in gender balance or gender commentary.

In this process of uploading everything again, it’s been kind of fun to try to fit old pictures together in new constellations. Here’s a group in pink: a queen monster-tree, her fruit babies and her caretaker botanist Tege. They matched nicely.

For Hazel:
Where does the line between cryptobotany and just, like...using magic to help your plants grow get drawn? And...if that line were to be accidentally and inadvertently crossed, is it something that the Cryptobotany licensing department would get particularly upset about?
I mean, I guess it would depend on how long you've been practicing. If this is all new, you should probably get a license. If you've been practicing for generations like my family has, they've been grandfathered in under the Venusian Cryptobotanical Acts in 1972. I chose to get a license because I don't plan on living on the homestead for forever, and I do plan on hopefully selling my plants commercially eventually!
Just a reminder that the Mandrake Acts only cover authorized businesses selling cryptobotanical goods and services. Still get a license even if Grandma used to grow Orangapples back in the day.
Oh. Yeah. Otherwise it would depend on exactly what was created. If its a carnivorous plant they tend to get upset about those because of the events in Mandalay Bay in 1971, where a particularly virulent carnivorous plant sprawled out for miles and miles and devastated the local plant and wildlife populations. If it's something like a flower you can't find any information on, or a fruit, I would report it as soon as you can so they can come out and check to make sure its not a direct threat to the local enviornment. It's crucial for us cryptobotanists to make sure that we aren't going to choke out normal plant life, and that the plants that fall under cryptobotany aren't going to cause damage to the environment and anything that lives inside of that environment.
That last part is important! We have to think of stable ecosystems, mundane or not.

ONEIRIC YAMS — WHISPERS
(Experiment with digital fabrication)
Tumblr media
Description
Oneiric Yams — Whispers is an experiment incorporating 3D printed objects, sound, and projection mapping.
The Oneiric Yam is a particular subject that I have studied for a couple years. It is an oneiric (related to dreams), cryptobotanical (unexplained and mysterious plant) structure. It grows out of the ground in an irregular egg shape. It sports a hollow interior and holes in its walls. At night, spores are released into the air through those holes. When animals (including humans) inhale them, they begin to dream.
I represent these dreams through sound and projection mapping.
The Oneiric Yam is a vessel for dreams. Dreams whisper out from within it, and I encourage putting an ear up to it to listen. The projection on the surface of the Yam shows a dim, blurry (re)collection of dreams and imbues the inanimate object with some life.
This is the first time the Oneiric Yam has left the 2D sheet of paper. I wish to develop this concept in the future, possibly creating a full oneiric, cryptobiological series.
//video documentation of two Oneiric Yams.
Tumblr media
//Oneiric Yams in dim light.
I am interested in how this Oneiric Yam concept can be developed. Are there more of these dream-producing root vegetables? How does the concept itself connect to ideas of cryptobiology, mythology, and science? Does the concept inadvertently trivialize the waking actions of dreamers themselves?
Inspirations
Dreams — Lucid dreaming — Cryptobiology/botany
Jenny Filipetti - Breath Vessels
Posy - Motion Extraction
Motomichi - Pop-Up Projection Mapping
Daniel John Jones & Seb Emina - Infraordinary FM

(1/2) Some of you may be aware of this, but a few years back, I created a cryptobotanical series called “Fragments from Utilis Planta”. I had a lot of fun creating the lore around these illustrations as well as the series itself and sold a good many of them. Currently, I have 17 of these Gallery framed and matted ink & watercolor illustrations left. They have been hung in my home since then and now it is time for them to find homes. Framed measurements - 15.5" x 22.5" Learn more about the series in the link in my bio and under the Illustrations tab. This series is near the bottom of the tab. (The tops of these images were cut off dues to sizing on Instagram) Private message me with any questions. #arsenicmedia #scottphilipgoergens #sphilipg #baltimoreartist #gayartist #cryptobotany #magicalplants #artforsale #illustration #watercolor
