Every time I rewatch the DBDA pilot, I always almost cry during Edwin’s breakdown. Not just because Edwin is panicked and distraught, but also because of Crystal and Charles’ reactions to it. You have Charles who’s standing back, not wanting to intervene but also being pained by seeing Edwin struggle. Crystal being the one to reach out to him - Crystal who up until this point has been 5 seconds away from throwing hands with him - and tries to show him that she cares too. Charles telling him that Crystal’s case still isn’t solved - that she’s one of them. No one looked for them and no one’s looking for her. It’s just something in how she reaches for Edwin and takes his hand and shows him that they do want the same thing that just wrecks me. I love their dynamic and I love the whole montage that follows.

Biggest complaint about the DBD series is for sure the fact that they swapped the boys' charming tree house base for some random ass flat in London. Why would they do that. I want them to live in a treehouse and by default be cottagecore gays

Sometimes I think about how Crystal is a voice for other girls/women throught entirety of S1. How she convinces Charles and Edwin they need to go save Becky Aspen, how she immediately notices something is wrong with Niko and insists they investigate and then puts herself in danger to get the sprites out of her without killing her, the way she says "you are telling me these women have been reliving the most painful moments of their life over and over again for 30 years?!" In the Devil's family episode, how she immediately believes and speaks out for Shelby, even before having concrete proof Brad and Hunter are assholes and has no issues arguing with Charles over it, how she sympathizes with Maren.
She speaks out and does her best to help all these women, because she herself felt helpless and alone. And one time she cannot do anything but watch as Niko dies, her anger at the injustice is so strong, she reaches out to Lilith through Esther and screams at a goddess. She, who has been scorned so many times, asks for nothing but for justice for all the little girls she couldn't save. For Niko.
Just. God, I love her so much and the fact that she is allowed to be both angry and kind at the same time and that her anger is often driven by the fact she is so kind at her core makes me kinda insane.

Ok ok but you wanna know the real tea?? I've read several beach fics at this point (which are all awesome btw, y'all are amazing writers) and it's a beloved staple to have Edwin be somehwat scandalised at everyone's beach outfits not to mention all flustered from seeing Charles in swim wear. Which is a Good Trope, don't get me wrong, I love that just as much as the next person
HOWEVER
I think actually it's Charles who should be more shooketh about Edwin in his funky lil edwardian two piece!!
Picture this. The year is 1916. You are 16 year old Edwin Payne with a bunch of repressed gay thoughts. Much unpleasantness happens, you die and get dragged to hell, even more unpleasantness happens, 70 years later you finally manage to claw your way up and suddenly women are allowed to vote. There's been not one but two world wars, several countries you grew up reading about in the news don't exist anymore and mini skirts are a thing now.
All I'm saying is, for all the teasing Edwin gets for "What is a handjob?" and "Crystal's internet", this kid was essentially thrust into a scifi world full of weird shit and gets mostly by via an attitude which can only be paraphrases as "fuck it, this might as well be a thing (maybe ask Charles about it later)". King of adaption, master of radical acceptance.
Charles on the other hand, and I say this with only love in my heart, is at his core a boomer. He was there for every tiny gradual shift from '89 to modern day. Sure, he was dead for most of that time, but that's not really relevant. All I'm saying is, seeing the bbc announce marriage equality was probably a bigger shock to Charles than it was to Edwin. That's a guy who already had to accept he will never fully wrap his head around home television.
Also consider the states of undress they've been exposed to seeing the other in. Edwin was stripped to his underwear in hell and still had his knees and elbows covered. And that was probably a more exposing outfit than he'd ever be comfortable with. His usual casual get up features a sweater vest for crying out loud! Meanwhile you have Charles going full 'ceps out in his undershirt first chance he gets. Edwin either got real cool with a lot of shit real fast or he would have combusted several times over those 30 years.
And yes yes, we've all seen Edwin "Haunted By Gay Thoughts" Payne's mental slideshow of abs n hips close ups after getting one (1) glance at the Cat King's stomach. But to his credit, the man was going through a full blown sexuality crisis at that and has since emerged victorious.
So all I'm saying is. Edwin seeing Charles shirtless at the beach? Probably not even the first time this is happening, a lil flustering for sure but just last week he saw two people making out nasty on the tube so hell if he knows. Charles seeing Edwin's kneecaps and upper arms for the first time? Incredible, show stopping, pride and predjudice 2005 hand flex level of suppressed horniness.
Anyway. I'm writing this fic now and none of y'all can stop me.

Heavy Angst
In the comics, Edwin's body was put in a chest in the attic of St Hilarion's. He is aware that his bones are there.
I have this interesting idea where the Core Four find a chest in the attic of St Hilarion's, where they had to go for a case. Unlike in the comics, they do not know what is inside. They don't want to open it so they have Crystal read it.
Crystal sees Edwin's death in its entirety. She isn't experiencing it as him, but she can see it and is immersed in it. And then when she lets go she just pulls back screaming, and she just starts shouting and crying because she just saw one of her best friends die far more horribly than she imagined.
And Edwin's like "what happened?" And she just like. Wipes her tears away and asks Niko and Charles to leave the room.
She goes to Edwin and takes his hand. He's confused at first and is kind of "what the fuck" about it. But then she tells him that it's his body and she had to see his death. And that of course he gets to decide what to tell Charles and Niko.
Edwin freaks out. Because he is upset that Crystal (accidentally) saw something that he really did not want her to see, and because his body was shoved in a box and forgotten and he thinks he does not deserve to be treated like that. And he has an episode-one style outburst.
He calms down eventually and tells Charles and Niko about it. Charles, Crystal, and Niko decide to bury him properly (and next to Charles). Edwin does not want Charles to go because a) he doesn't want Charles to see his dead body, and b) he wants Charles to remain with him since he cannot bury himself and will stay in the attic.
Charles just stays with him the whole time. And he holds his hand and listens when he does talk.
The girls bury Edwin's bones. Niko spends the entire time that it takes Crystal to dig the hole holding the chest with the bones inside lovingly while crying. She thinks Edwin in this living body was never held and loved, so she is doing it for him now.
Finally, Edwin is buried next to Charles. They all go to the attic to be with Edwin.

One thing I've spent a lot of time thinking about is how quickly Charles opens up to Crystal, and why it was he showed her things that he's kept from Edwin for thirty years.
The first component is, I think, because she needs him to.
Charles is, at his core, an extremely supportive person. He tries so hard for everyone around him, unfailingly. He's there for Edwin and Crystal, emotionally and physically, throughout the series. He tries to put on a happy face to keep everyone's spirits up, because at his core, he needs to be needed. He desperately wants people to like him, and his always-cheerful act is at least in part meant as an offer of support to others.
Tumblr media
Not only that, but he routinely puts his own needs and wants aside in favor of giving others what they need instead. (I go more into how that affects his relationship with Crystal here and with Edwin here.)
So it's interesting to note that the first time he opens up to Crystal, it isn't for his own sake. Crystal is saying that it's hard not to be able to go home.
Tumblr media
And what does Charles do? He reaches out in the way he thinks she needs.
He shows her his parents.
It's his way of saying that he gets it. He understands where she's coming from. It is hard not to be able to go home. And won't she let them help?
Tumblr media
But it's interesting that this is something that he hasn't shown Edwin.
Not only hasn't he shown Edwin, but he still doesn't want Edwin to know. He specifically asks Crystal not to tell him.
So, why?
Well... just like he thinks Crystal needs to hear it, Charles thinks that Edwin doesn't.
One of the very first things he learned about Edwin is that he escaped from hell. Charles says that Edwin has told him a lot about it. And from the very first episode, it's extremely clear that Edwin doesn't shy away from talking about his time there.
Tumblr media
So we've got Charles, a consummate people-pleaser who's desperate for approval, faced with this boy who just did the kindest thing anyone has ever done for him. We've got Charles, who supports the people he cares for as naturally as breathing, faced with a boy he cares dearly for, and that boy is dealing with decades of trauma.
So what does Charles think that boy needs? He needs someone to help him. He needs someone to be kind, and optimistic, and cheerful, because Edwin's time in hell has taught him to always expect the worst.
So Charles stuffs his own issues down somewhere deep because Edwin needs him to put on a cheerful face.
That's the first part.
The second reason why Charles opens up to Crystal so quickly is, I think, circumstantial.
She happens to be there during the Devlin house fiasco, when he's being faced by very visceral, unavoidable reminders of his own abuse. She's literally in the room when he reads Hope's diary, and from what we see and hear about Charles' family life, everything in that diary mirrors what Charles went through.
Hope's father has very strict rules. She's walking on eggshells. She never knows what's going to set him off.
Tumblr media
Charles relates deeply to all of those things, and seeing his own thoughts and feelings spelled so clearly out on the page is enough to bring him to tears.
He's looking at this girl who, like him, struggled constantly to be good enough and constantly fell short.
For the first time in three decades, Charles is confronted with a situation that mirrors his own home life, one to one, and Crystal is there for it in real time.
Tumblr media
She's able to see him put the mask down because she's there when it cracks.
Which brings us around to the third component.
And this one is a little more speculative, but hear me out.
Picture one Charles Rowland, circa 1989.
His dad beats the shit out of him on the regular. He thinks it's because he can never quite manage to be good enough, even though he's trying as hard as he knows how. His mother never defends him or speaks up for him.
His so-called friends? They'll beat him to death later this same year.
He's bi, but the AIDS epidemic is in full swing, and even if it wasn't, he's busily pretending the part of him that likes boys doesn't exist, because he looked at a boy the wrong way once, or maybe even kissed one, and his father beat the shit out of him for it.
So with a dire home life and the world's worst friends, what's left? Where's this boy who's desperate for a little kindness going to look for it?
Well, the only option that's left.
Tumblr media
Charles is starved for approval and affection both, and for most of his short life, he's got exactly one avenue available to get either of them.
Girls his own age are safe.
They don't hurt him. They don't stand by and let his father beat him. They don't turn on him and literally murder him, when they don't get their way.
After he dies, he's got Edwin, and Edwin is everything to him. But for thirty long years, Edwin's sexuality and romantic inclinations are so far under wraps that they may as well be in another galaxy.
Edwin is kind, but he's stilted and does poorly with people. Edwin values Charles dearly, but he's awkward at expressing physical affection. Edwin cares about Charles a great deal, but he shies away from strong emotions. (If you're interested, I talk more about Edwin vs emotions here.)
So of course Charles would miss kissing. That's the only chance he's ever had, as far as experience has taught him, to earn any kind of physical affection.
And Crystal, when she comes along, falls directly into that "safe" category in his brain.

I am actually so emotionally destroyed by Crystal’s arc in this season. She comes in with no memories but she’s still angry, impatient, and rude sometimes—nothing like how she used to be, but her brain definitely remembers her habits even if she doesn’t remember the context.
And then Charles doesn’t get angry when she insults him, and Edwin matches her snappiness perfectly but still grows to value her. Her parents were so neglectful she probably became an asshole as part of a way to protect herself (causing an “any attention is good attention, including negative attention” mindset). So with the boys, she is faced with people who will actually engage with her when she intentionally challenges them, instead of just yelling at her or ignoring her. And it begins to change her immediately.
She goes from making someone walk into traffic to “I just want to help.” To “I have friends, I’m helping people, what more do I need?” She immediately volunteers to help Becky Aspen. She stops using her powers on random people. She takes Charles’ words to heart when he tells her she needs to let them in. She learns how to work with Edwin when Charles is in trouble.
And even though she has no memory of her parents, she still desperately wants to be reunited with them, even though if she had remembered them, she probably wouldn’t have bothered. “My parents won’t even care”, she says flippantly on the phone. And then when she does call them, they don’t care. But without her memory, at her core, Crystal wants her parents to care. She wanted them to care even when she would hide it behind recklessness and cruelty. This is common in kids with neglectful parents. She had so much hope when it was the anglerfish, and she had so much hope even after she began to remember her old life.
Old Crystal never would’ve tried to talk Esther Finch down by telling her about how toxic anger is and how important it is to choose to do good. And New Crystal wouldn’t have done that either if she didn’t truly believe it.
And at the end, when she gets her memories back, she is horrified by what she sees, by the kind of person she used to be.
Michael from The Good Place says: People improve when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don’t?
Crystal is a perfect representation of this statement and I will not sit here and let people talk bad about her.

A few days late, but Dead Boy Detectives character appreciation week, day 3: Crystal Palace Surname-Von Hoverkraft
🔮Everyone's favorite psychic! From the very beginning of the show Crystal stands out with her determination, moral compass, and her will to help those in need. Therefore, it comes as a surprise to the viewer when we learn about Crystal's past and the things she did before losing her memories.
To me, it seems that the most important theme with Crystal is that your past doesn't need to define you. Whatever happened to you, whatever you did, you can always strive to take matters into your own hands and choose better in future. She also possesses a great deal of emotional intelligence and, unlike the boys, knows how to discuss feelings. It's largely thanks to her that Charles and Edwin start to be more open with each other.
Crystal's complexities are perfectly portrayed by the talented Kassius Nelson who brilliantly captures the nuances of her character. From exceptionally kind to strong-willed, from scared to bold, Kassius makes Crystal just as complex as any real person with her outstanding performance.
🎨I'm not hundred percent satisfied with this, but oh well. And it's still character appreciation week, so I'm not that late... Right? Right? I was originally planning to draw at least the core four, but I doubt I'll manage Niko by tomorrow. I will draw her at some point, but will most likely post very very late. Apologies for that, real life's been a lot lately.

dead boy detectives characters as art objects and sculptures; extended ---
hello, i remembered i made some subjective explanations and notes on few of my choices for this post, and i thought some folks might enjoy it. soo let's get into it.
1.
monty finch
Tumblr media
author: anders krisár
pretty self-explanatory; it's a moulded male torso with visible inprints on its skin.
anders krisár’ artistry explores the themes of loss, separation, and the condition of the psyche through the lens of a human body in duality: perfectionism meets unsettlement, skin meets marble and bronze and polyester, to create sculptures spanning geological time far beyond the living's capabilities.
monty's creation by esther was already stripped of any human agency. "he was made a boy, not a person", small, almost doll-sized, with a singular purpose: to seduce and entice the chosen dead boy into their doom. the naked skin and specifically the position of its arms are mildly erotic, but in a way that makes your skin crawl. the imprints are intimate, placed possesive; notice the thumbs digging close to especially sensitive areas like nipples and the belly button.
the latter seems to connect the "creator" to the subject, the navel here as a symbol of cruel, invasive motherhood. the fact that the torso is cut off in the middle and at the neck furthers the uncanny valley feeling of a young male body, but then again. this is a realistic portrayal. so was it ever a person? what does it have inside to make dents so profound? how deep you can press until it breaks?
--- i'm leaving out crystal and edwin (for now?), but @nicheoverhere brilliantly noticed that it was the same author for both. that was intentional! because glen martin taylor is all about taking kintsugi, which is a beautiful art form of repairing fine china and generally delicate things with veins of precious metals, but with materials like— nails. scissors. barbed wire. all ugly. the repair after a great shattering is seldom pretty after all, they really are similar in this regard. ---
2.
charles rowland
Tumblr media
author: robert hudson
okay, strap in. this funky dreamy world belongs to robert hudson, and i picked it for charles rowland because it's all first impressions. the colours? the composition? they give you the 80s vibes, almost; like something a kid would design if you asked them what a time machine would look like. it could probably move in several ways. the pieces seem mismatched, but hold themselves together surprisingly well. or maybe you underestimate it?
it's neither big nor small. you can't tell its size at all. it's a bit overwhelming to look at, at first, and at second, and after a while, but it carries that comfortable familiarity and nostalgia for— well, nothing in particular, because the longer you look, the sadder its past seems. the bold pops of contrasting colour are fighting for your attention. they want you to like it! and yet, the major material seems to be just. rusted steel. made from tools.
and look at that botched up sphere, it wants so badly to be a perfect sphere and it knows it'll never be one. fine!! perhaps it could be a football ball instead! or maybe a head. if you close your eyes, that is. and this facing-up horseshoe? a lucky charm, made to collect good luck and keep it from falling out cause god, it needs it.
---
3.
niko sasaki
Tumblr media
author: justin cloud
---
niko sasaki, now how do i describe her? let's start by saying— she's cleary a her. this one is a she. and there's something to be said about blooming, and femininity, and delicacy, because pink is a hopeful girly colour and a surprise and a delight.
what are you doing in a gallery, little flower, shouldn't you be at home? in a field? look how pretty you are! mind you, of course there's something wrong with her as well, but you're not sure if that is because someone messed it up, or because of a different entity alltogether. was it always half-electric? its elegance seems purposeful— the iridescent metal fits all too well with the white-pink petals— but also uncanny. and oh suddenly you can't stop looking at the stigma from which a pollen should release aaany time now.
when i look at her, at her black artificial stem and the small leaves imitating the real ones, i wonder if she doesn't want to lure me into a trap. is it her fault?
the beautiful petals seem like the only thing left real of the flower. whichever way she turns, it will probably mean— death. and flowers are ephemeral. what is a flower mounted to a wall, fortified with steel, connected with cables and enfused with electrical energy, then?
i think she's a self-preserving survivor. ---
4.
the night nurse
Tumblr media
author: elizabeth turk
---
now. the night nurse.
of course it's the only piece in the collection where the background needed to be dark. no one here is older than her. there is no inoffensive, fading-into-background white for this absolute pillar of truth. or maybe something like a totem, quite protective in nature. and it's terrifying, 'cause you're immediately hit with the feeling that you're looking at something out of this realm, something you're not supposed to witness. the perspective is all wrong. is it downwards or upwards? why does it seem unstable when the pieces are so perfectly centered and seemingly well-balanced? child, you should calm down, it's not like you will destroy it with a stronger puff of air. will you?
this sculpture is called "tipping point — echoes of extinction", and it's actually a mix of technology and sculpture and sound, with elegant visualizations of the lost voices of birds and sea mammals. the author said it "was conceived in reverence to the astounding lives the species which envelop humans have lived and the mysterious ways they have contributed to our well-being. the shadows of their memory, whether a shape or a sound, have inspired this project." so the piece deals with death. moreover, it deals with murder. it records the harsh reality and makes sure the ones that suffered horribly at the hands of humans are, in a way, celebrated. but also— categorised. like epitaphs. the birdsong, once a living sign, is only visually represented by the lines of varying lenghts in 3D, and you can do nothing about it anymore, right, you can't bring back the dead, you can't help the innocent dying in any way other than— stacking them on top of each other and moving on.
---
so that's for now, i might someday write more if anyone's curious. :")

Dead Boy Detectives - the core four
I wanted this to be a purely aesthetic post, but in the process of making the gifs I've had some thoughts, so here you go: Seeing the core four's "action shots" all side by side made me realise that they each kind of represent their character's journey as well.
We've got Charles, who is taking back control, hitting back. He acts as the protector he would have needed when he was alive, but also he is defending and protecting someone close to him, no longer helpless in the face of abuse and violence. And his strength comes from a point of defense, not aggression like his father. He's very much not a bad guy, but the literal hero of the shot.
Then there's Edwin running from a WWI soldier and going through the looking glass, jumping from one world to the next, pushing through his own reflection (and how people have bullied and killed him for perceiving him as effeminate and queer) and finding his queerness on the other side, landing on his own two feet, balanced and steady, having found this whole new world of feeling and acceptance on the other side. Edwin, my beloved.
Crystal (aaahhh I could write a thesis on Crystal, honestly) who is being thrown off balance and into limbo, existing between two lives while she is searching for her stolen memories. She's is constantly being pulled in two directions, between her past and her future, between David the demon and the cute ghost distraction, between letting go of toxic relationships and embracing her new found family.
And then Niko, Niko is just ascending.
credit for the Charles gif goes to @mellxncollie
Ok and if you're still reading, here's another thing I noticed while making these "action shot" gifs - both Charles and Edwin are very much agents of these actions in their shots, while things are done to Crystal and Niko. Charles throws and catches the cricket bat, initiating and controlling the action. Edwin jumps through the mirror, he is the one who maneuvers himself through. But Crystal is pushed by David, falls through the floor, off balance and out of control, and she is caught by Charles. And Niko is being lifted up by the sprites who have taken control of her body. I think it's a neat way to show a gendered division within the core four, but also both girls move beyond their initial helplessness/passiveness and become real freaking badasses, while the boys later on get their fair share of having things happen to them instead. And in the season finale it's Crystal and Niko who save our two ghost damsels in distress. I don't know where I'm going with this, it was just something I noticed and I thought you guys might have some more eloquent and coherent thoughts.

Thinking about how if Jenny did come to London with the others, and if Monty does manage to turn back into a human and ends up joining the agency... there's seven members of the agency. Which means that there's one that matches up with each member of the Endless.
Edwin---well, that one's obvious, isn't it? He's come face to face with Despair, walked in her domain, stared her in the eyes as she quietly declared that they were friends now. He is, at his core, deeply and profoundly sad, and there's no denying that. Until Edwin allows himself to be happy, Despair will always have her hooks in his heart, and even when he's free of them, she will always linger in the faintest parts of his ghostly aura, will always be there whenever he travels through a mirror.
Charles... oh, Charles. We all know which of the Endless he would be the most affected by, don't we? He claims that he can't say he's in love with Edwin back, but the minute those words left his mouth, Desire was up there in their domain, cackling at how fucking idiotic this boy is. If we get a season 2, we will absolutely see them taunting Charles, purring into his ear that they know how much he's been ignoring his own desires and wouldn't it be nice to just acknowledge it, darling? Edwin was able to tell you, why can't you just say it back?
Crystal already feels as if she's losing her mind half the time, and doubly so now that she's fully warring with two very separate sides of herself. Would it really be a stretch for her to try to help a lonely-looking girl with wild red hair one night, only to touch her and immediately get pulled into a world that is a riot of color and confusion and things that don't and shouldn't exist? Delirium would probably be kind to her---her default state tends to be kind, even if not everyone sees it that way---but I doubt Crystal would have a good time there, even as Delirium compliments her on her name and proudly proclaims that she's a shiny rock and a pretty building and a football team and a flying machine all in one.
Niko's lost somewhere right now, and we all know she has a long journey home. I don't think it would be unlikely for her journey to eventually lead her to a palace with a roof made of stars, or a library full of every book that has ever been written---and every book that never has. And Dream might see this girl who doesn't belong in his world, but who can't take his sister's hand, and show her the way back to her friends. After all, she's lost so much and is still full of so much hope, and how could Dream not admire someone like that?
Monty... well, he spends all his time looking up at the stars, and not just because they sparkle and shine and all of his crow instincts say that they're treasures meant to be plucked from the sky. He wants to know the future, his future, to find out whether or not he can be something other than just a witch's pet. And maybe, some of his wanderings will one day lead him into a labyrinth, and he'll come out the other side in the garden of Destiny. Will Destiny let Monty read from his book? Probably not, but I think being there might be comfort enough.
There's a slim chance of Jenny ever meeting Destruction, but they are more similar than you may think. Jenny, like him, is a prodigal who left her post, whose life always seems to fall apart, who struggles with a whirlwind of emotions that she can barely comprehend. And while he's off in a secluded land, finding new ways to channel creation rather than the purpose he was made for, she's rebuilding her life, as crazy as it may be.
And, well... we all know who the Night Nurse works for.

I love how the fandom has agreed that none of the core 4 are straight. Crystal and Charles? Bi. Niko? Lesbian, pan, demi, etc. Edwin? Gay of course but I've seen aro/ace with him, demi, etc.
I love you trans headcanons + gender nonconformity pieces. Big kiss to every artwork of the boys in skirts. I love girl-kisser Niko. Take the queer show and run with it
