Okay, I had thoughts on forming a legit DBD Hadestown AU, and seeing as they kept me up literally all last night, it seemed only fitting that I actually write them down. So:
Charles and Edwin are, obviously, Orpheus and Eurydice respectively. However, rather than having just met and falling into a whirlwind romance, I decided that they're childhood friends who've met again and rediscovered feelings that they'd both been ignoring for a long time. Edwin is dedicated soley to figuring out why the world is dying and if he can help people while he can, and he hasn't really let himself rest, or even feel happy, in years---to the point where he feels that any good thing is too good to be true, even falling in love. Charles, on the other hand, has long since made the decision that someone has to be happy and keep spirits up in the trying times, and it might as well be him... even at the cost of his own health, as he works tirelessly on a song that he knows, despite all logic and understanding, will bring back spring again.
Crystal is Hermes, but she is also Hecate---she is the goddess of the in-between, magic, trickery, the crossroads, and restless souls... and that last part refers not only to the dead that she guides to Hadestown, but to anyone who chooses a life of wandering the road, from the honest messenger to the thieving highwayman. And yet, since the world has begun to die, she's been slowly slipping away from her role, choosing to spend her time among the mortals. This decision, of course, is helped by the fact that not only is Crystal one of the few gods who thinks there's more to the world dying than it just being "a reflection of mortal hubris," but that she's managed to make a friend in Charles. She's seen the way that music can change the world, after all, and knowing that there's at least one mortal who still has hope means that she can still believe.
Niko is a combination of Aphrodite and Dionysus---she's the goddess of love, revelries, happiness, and abundance, yes, but she's also the goddess of the mania that comes when all of those things are taken too far, and she's been dipping more and more into that side of herself as the world gets worse and worse. She wants to forget all the pain and suffering, and she gives herself and others the means to do so, even if it's all temporary. And while Niko does care for the mortals, and wishes that things could get better... deep down, she's lost a lot of her old hope, and even she can't disguise the fact that she's living with a broken heart.
Monty is Persephone, but he's also Apollo---he's the god of rebirth, prophecies, the stars and the earth, and new beginnings... and for what should be half of the year, he rules over the dead. He used to find just as much joy in watching over the souls as he did creating spring with Niko and charting the stars to bring prophecies to the mortals, but as Hadestown gets more punishing, more people die up above, and the world just gets worse, Monty grows even more bitter and closed off. He's unable to even properly enjoy his time on the surface, knowing full well that he won't stay for six months like he should... and the man he loves is wearing his patience thin.
The Cat King is Hades---and yes, somebody did make a very compelling argument for him being the Fates, but it works for the story, so just hang on. Once upon a time, he was happy just ruling over souls and managing the afterlife, and he cherished the time he spent with Monty as much as he could. But over time, wealth became added to his already vast domain, and his fascination for making and collecting things became an obsession... in no small part due to the fact that those six months spent away from Monty started to weigh incredibly heavy on him, and he eventually loses himself in his effort to replicate everything his husband loves about the upper world as it dies along with the way they used to feel about each other. Not to mention, his old empathy and compassion for the souls has hardened into cold indifference at best and a sick enjoyment of their suffering at worst. And all this change is making one person in particular very happy...
Esther is the Fates, but she's also a version of Demeter---the goddess of nature and all of its love and cruelties, and the one who spins everyone's path on her loom, punishing those who dare to stray from what she has determined for them. She's despised the Cat King for years, ever since he whisked Monty away to Hadestown, and she wholeheartedly believes that the reason the world is dying is only because he's been keeping Monty down there for too long, not because they've begun to fall out of love. So, when Esther spins a tale of a pair of lovers who are destined to end tragically, she sees it as an opportunity to finally push the Cat King and Monty to the breaking point---to save her son and the world, she tells herself, but mostly for revenge.

Hey, teacher! aka my motorcycle Catwin AU, part 5
still sfw! Fancy that x
Edwin’s grateful for the small pile of laundry Thomas left on the bed for him to busy himself with. Ignoring the warmth of his cheeks, he peers at the washing label of the faded band t-shirt on the top of the pile, as he passes back through the guest room, and notices Thomas's leather jacket hanging off the bedpost.
He shouldn't. But he does.
Leather has always enticed Edwin. Whether it be a fine pair of Italian gloves, an expensive belt that compliments his suit so nicely, or a finely crafted genuine leather book cover. Oh, he’s long filled up the most beautiful notebook collection from England. Pure poetry, the combined scent of paper and leather. The soft creak of the spine, the shift of paper, the scrape of his pen.
The smell of leather has always enticed Edwin.
The jacket in his hands is black and worn, obviously not cared for in the traditional sense. There are some cracks, mild damage to the cuffs, all to be expected if worn every day. There is a large piece of artwork on the back, stitched there by someone who knew what they were doing, even if they weren't classically trained in tailoring. It's a large depiction of an orange cat, with fierce golden slitted eyes, predatory gaze locked on the viewer, as if following along with every angle. Charming, in a sense.
Along the bottom, in a very ornate yet blocky script, framed beneath the orange cat’s unsheathed glinting claws, are the words "Cat-o-nine Carnivores." The name doesn't ring a bell, but he supposes it shouldn't. In any case, Edwin appreciates the wordplay.
On the front of the jacket is a name patch, that reads "Cat King." Well at least Thomas wasn't lying about that. Edwin idly wonders if it's a name he gave himself, or one given to him by his peers. Or subjects? Is Thomas the leader, self-dictated King? Does he have a clowder of other leather-clad, motorcycle-riding, vagrants, with kind eyes, strong hands, broad chests…Next to it is a patch that looks like a cat’s paw print, claws out, tinted red as if bloodied. Above it, a smaller patch, a neon red crown framed in a pair of equally bright turquoise rings. Under the guise of wanting a closer look at the decorative patches, Edwin brings the jacket close to his face. His ruse falls away immediately the moment the scent of the worn leather fills his nose. Leather softly creaks in his white-knuckled clenching grip, as Edwin buries his nose near the collar and breathes in the mixed scent of the jacket itself, and the hints of Thomas’s cologne, sunk and buried into the inner layer of soft leather, from repetitive usage. He stands there, fills his nose and lungs with the enticing combination of smells, until even the air leaving his mouth tastes the same as the air flowing in with every deep pulling breath.
Edwin hears the shower stop, and he almost trips over his own feet in his haste to get out of the guest room. He barely remembers to re-grab the small pile of laundry on his way out. The washing machine and clothes dryer are out on the back porch, and he takes in a breath of fresh air to calm his nerves as he deposits the clothes into the washing machine, with a more than modest helping of soap.
The next stop is the kitchen. Settling on a light dinner, something filling, yet easy enough on the stomach, he thinks. Pulling ingredients out of the fridge, Edwin sets to chopping his small selection of vegetables for the stir fry. He’s almost ready to add them to the chicken, setting the bowl next to the wok, while he peers into the fridge again in search for a lemon, mentally going through the contents his spice rack.
He hears a strange noise from the doorway, realizes with a start that Thomas is standing there, impersonating the sounds of a trumpet. "Presenting," he affects a posh accent, "the most well-dressed man in the room." Thomas ends the statement with a flourish, taking up an appropriately dramatic pose, and Edwin immediately bursts out laughing. Full bodied, head thrown back, so open and loud he fears he might come across as rude, but he can’t help it, and he doesn’t think Thomas minds, judging from his expression. It’s not something Edwin can currently decipher, struggling to blink away tears, but its near enough encouraging, as is the way Thomas keeps up his exaggerated stretches, arms swinging to and fro, to highlight, to, to entertain him.
To Edwin’s credit, the pyjamas almost fit. At first glance. The pants are… They would be fine; if Thomas had seen fit to actually roll up the ankles. As is, the bunched-up fabric seems to pool around and over his feet, in a damning contract to the way the fabric seems to struggle at the seams near Thomas’ hips. Lengthwise, Edwin reasons their size discrepancy is easy to ignore. But there’s no denying their difference in build. The shirt ends a good four to five centimeters above the waistband of the pants, leaving an exposed stripe of abs, offering a hint of Thomas’s bellybutton. To say the rest of the shirt properly covers the remaining chest, would be straining the truth about as much as the material seems to strain with every push of Thomas’s chest, even just as he takes a breath. Edwin’s honestly surprised a button hasn’t popped off. It seems painted on him around his shoulders, and the sleeves stop well above his wrists. It's almost as if he's wearing a child's shirt. It cannot be comfortable.
Edwin clearly underestimated their differences, but he can't stop laughing long enough to apologize. As he gasps for breath, he actually snorts, which sets Thomas off on his own fit of laughter, except his is louder, unrestrained. He clutches the wall with one hand, his ribs with the other, beaming smiles sent Edwin’s way at the end of every bout, before he inhales, loses the air again to laughter, and Edwin reflects on what it must look like; two grown men, giggling so hard they can't speak, in the middle of his kitchen.
Finally, Edwin is able to get himself under control, straightening, hand moving without much thought to lower the settings of the furnace, add the vegetables, while he wipes an errant tear off his cheek. "I'm so sorry," he chuckles apologetically, "That cannot be comfortable, let me get you a T-shirt or something.” He busies himself for a bit with stirring the food, checking for any signs of burning. Nodding to himself in relief when he catches no sign of the meal lessening in quality, he turns his head to Thomas. “Do you want a different set of trousers, as well?" He adds.
"All good, Edwin. I’m actually used to walking around without a shirt." Thomas grins, fiddling with the too-small shirt. “Do you mind?” Thomas asks, and Edwin shakes his head in a negative before he’s consciously thought of it, but truly, why would his opinion matter on something another likes to do in the comfort of his own home? He’ll just go look for the biggest shirt he owns, offer it as an option.
Edwin turns back to the food for a final stir, before he heads back upstairs, hears the rustling of fabric, the scrape of a chair, imagines the shirt is getting neatly folded over the back. Oh.
Edwin is partly relieved his guest feels comfortable enough in his home. He keeps his eyes on the food. Maybe just a bit more stirring. He has to make sure it doesn’t burn.

Hi, look at me here again!😁 Oh my gosh, I was so nervous waiting for your reply. I thought I might have annoyed you or that you didn’t want to answer because I’m being persistent. I’m so sorry for my anxiety; I didn’t mean to be insistent. I just wanted to know more about your fic and, if you didn’t mind, to talk to you. Oh gosh, how embarrassing!!!😖 Sorry again! Being antisocial is so hard, and shyness doesn’t help either, but here I am! Talking to the author of the best fic about my favorite couple!☺️
So, do you mind if I ask? Can I ask more questions? If so, I’m going to!
Was Desire a good father? Or was he the typical rich dad who leaves the kids with lots of nannies and lets them do whatever they want? Because your answer made it seem like he didn’t give much affection or attention to Thomas as a father. Sorry if I misunderstood!
Will we get to meet Thomas’s sister? Is she as beautiful as her brother?
Would Niko become friends with Thomas? Like one of those gossip-loving friends?
What does Thomas think about Edwin’s friends?
Is Thomas the duke of that region, or is he from another region?
Does Thomas live in a modern mansion or one with Gothic architecture vibes?
And the last question: Since Thomas is completely in love with Edwin, would he hate Edwin’s father for everything he did?
These are my questions, and please don’t get mad at me! I’d LOVE to talk about your fic with you—it’s what I want most! If you really don’t mind. Have an amazing weekend, and I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next chapter! Hugs to you!❤️❤️
Honestly it’s fine! Like I said, I love talking about my fic 😂😂
To answer your questions 😂😂 I know I’m going to write a lot again so am putting this under read more 😂😂
1. Desire 100% does not care for their kids at ALL (and there’s probably way more than Thomas and his sister)!! I think anything taking attention away from Desire, like children would for example, really irritates them!! For the sake of image they will look like a happy family on the surface, or smile for a family photo but as soon as the moments over their smile drops and they just do not care what their kids do. But if someone like Thomas starts acting out or getting a bad reputation that brings down the family name then Desire will get involved!! Our boy’s never been able to make their father happy but he’s always been able to disappoint them
2. Again, no plans to bring his other family into the story sorry :/ if they do appear it’ll probably be a backstory sequence or something. I’m mostly just building family lore, also had to research this in the beginning but Miranda is Unity Kinkaid’s daughter so you bet your ass Unity was Desire’s FIRST wife in this! Obviously was a terrible marriage! And then Thomas’ mum came along… another bad marriage…. Desire’s probably on their fifth marriage by now in the fic, or about to have it 😂😂 (the exes aren’t just wives as well! 100% had some husbands as well!!) also Miranda probably is gorgeous, since the whole family are, not thought all that much into what she would look like tbh
3. Niko would try her best to be friends with Thomas, she wants all the details on what life is like as a member of the royal family!! Also she wants ALL the romance details between him and Edwin! Thomas would probably humour her after a while, but I do like to think their relationship would be having spa days, like wearing face masks in the flat or something 🥰🥰
4. I don’t think he’s had all that much chance to think about Edwin’s friends yet, although I do mention his feelings towards them in the latest chapter 🥰🥰 he’ll get used to them…… it’ll take him longer to get used to Charles though 😂😂 since Charles obviously does NOT like him
5. Omg I have literally not even thought about where he would be the Duke of 😂😂 he’s probably another region tbh, he just hangs around London, shirking his duties a lot, especially now that he’s found Edwin!! 💛💛
6. Thomas absolutely has a couple of properties!! He probably has a stately home somewhere in the country that he NEVER visits!! He mostly stays in his London penthouse suite though, VERY modern, not homey or cosy at all, it looks like one of those showrooms that are absolutely not lived in!! Oh and… can’t forget his cats!! 😸
7. Oh you KNOW he’s going to hate Edwin’s dad!! When he eventually does find out about everything that has happened to his boy he’s going to FLIP!!! Thomas will want to do something about it but Edwin will want to forget about it and have nothing to do with his past ever again!! Thomas wants justice for Edwin but he also doesn’t want to make him do anything he doesn’t want, or do anything that could put him in danger 🥺
I hope I’ve managed to answer your questions 🥰🥰 and I hope you like the new chapter 💛💛 thank you for your sweet words again!! It means a lot knowing other people love my story as much as I do 🥰🥰

So, I'm going to be the one that makes the post on Payneland and parallels to other couples/relationships, aren't I?
Sigh...I guess here we go. Spoilers, obviously. So if you haven't watched Dead Boy Detectives, go watch it and return to this post!
Believe it or not, there is more than one relationship to which I can compare the Edwin/Charles dynamic.
These couples include Destiel (Supernatural), Malec (Shadowhunters), and Solangelo (PJO).
So let's start with the Charles parallels.
We are introduced in Episodes 3 & 4 to the fact that Charles went through some serious physical abuse. His father had high expectations for him, and when he didn't match those expectations, he took his anger out on Charles. This gives reason as to why Charles's anger comes out in the form of protection because he was never protected from that abuse, and he doesn't want anyone else to experience the same type of hurt he did.
Not only does this remind me of Dean Winchester, but of Magnus Bane. Both were raised by men who were quite angry and abusive in their own ways. Yet these characters are known for their care and love of other people. Dean's entire job is saving people, Magnus' job is helping people with his magic abilities, and we already know Charles's job of helping ghosts solve their mysteries to cross over. All these characters wish to be better (while holding themselves to very high standards) and care more for everyone else than themselves.
So where do the Edwin parallels come into these pairings?
When Edwin was alive, we see that he was a loner, often ridiculed and ostracized by his peers for being a 'Mary Anne'. This puts us into the discussion of how and why it takes a cat king and a crow to help him figure out his sexuality; he merely doesn't realize his feelings because they were never needed during both his time alive and in hell. I'm going to assume that he didn't keep up with politics and popular culture once he got out, so he really was just unaware of what society became, and that's why Niko had to tell him.
This very much fits my comparison to Castiel, his brethren looking down on him because he had 'too much heart'; he began to care more heavily once he was introduced to Dean, but everyone believed he 'came off the line with a crack in his chassis'. I've always thought this was heavily queer-coded. Edwin and Castiel have the similarities of being adorably clueless when it comes to human modern-day communication and needing help in navigating relationships. The comparison I'll make to Alec is that he was also raised in quite a hostile environment. He was forgotten, and looked at as a second choice to his brother Jace before Magnus took notice of him. Alec is another character who goes through a self-discovery journey in which he's adamant that he doesn't need a relationship or feelings to do what needs to be done; he rather be all work.
Now let's get to Solangelo parallels.
Edwin and Nico are both placed out of time, stuck in places for decades until the world has changed around them so drastically they don't recognize it anymore. They both go to Hell/Tartarus and have to find their own ways out. They are both ultimately kind even though they have been hurt by the world, again ostracized and seen as outsiders. They do what must be done to save that which they care about most and, ultimately, torture themselves over their feelings.
Charles and Will are the blinding light that leads their respective partner out of the darkness in more ways than one. They make the choice to stick around their person even though Edwin/Nico thinks they are better off on their own, but Charles/Will pushes to stay with them, not out of duty but because they want to. They try to get their partners out of their comfort zone and remind them to not take everything so seriously all the time.
Now the Hell parallels. One partner always goes to Hell, and the other follows; it does not always perfectly align but stay with me.
Dean goes to Hell, and Castiel fetches him and brings him back to Earth, but Castiel is the one who is more changed by the experience. "When Castiel first laid a hand on you in Hell, he was lost." This could also parallel Edwin and Charles meeting for the first time. Castiel and Charles both choose to stay with the person who changed/was kind to them.
Again, the parallels don't perfectly align with Malec but Edwin goes to hell, as Magnus goes to Edom, albeit Magnus goes willingly, he can’t escape. Charles follows, as does Alec. And neither leave without their other half.
Same with Solangelo, Nico goes into Tartarus, and Will follows because he isn't going to let Nico experience it by himself for a second time.
My point to this post is that these are common tropes that go along the lines of 'Do not go where I can not follow'. Both people in the relationship are so devoted to each other that they are broken when they are apart and are willing to go to the ends of the earth to get them back.
If there are any other parallels/things I missed, please add to this post!

The Shadow Witch | Chapter 1: Curiosity Kills
Summary + Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
Pairing: Namor x Faye Nyx (Original Female Character)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Romance
Summary: Namora is always careful, always, however, one day she gets caught by knights. They plan to take her to their king, King Edwin Stark, as a prisoner. The stories of a king underwater spread throughout the land and the king wants to draw him out. Unfortunately his plan fails when a exiled and vengeful witch rescues Namora.
Namora was making her way toward the path that would lead her to the water tunnels to Talokan. She had finished patrolling the seas and grew tired. She knew her cousin would want a report as well. The great king of Talokan was always worried about his kingdom being found out. Namora was worried as well but for once this trip was...Almost peaceful.
Namora’s ears picked up a sound and she looked up at the surface of the water. “Help! Somebody help please!!” A voice screamed. Namora knew she should just keep going, yet the tone of the person’s screams concerned her. She swam around a large rock and surfaced behind it to stay hidden. She was able to get a better picture of what was happening on the shore.
A woman in a white torn dress and blonde hair was screaming for help. She fell to her knees and cried, cradling herself. Namora didn’t see anyone and went back in the water to swim to the shore. She surfaced the water, only revealing her head. “Ba'axten ka wok'ol? (Why are you crying?)”
The blonde woman gasped when she saw Namora. “W-Who are you? Can you help me?”
“Wáaj máax a persigue, Ba'axten k'abéet a áantaj? (Who is chasing you, why do you need help?)”
“I’m sorry I don’t know what you’re saying...Are you from the sea?”
Namora rolled her eyes, “Je'el obviamente. (Yes, obviously).”
The blonde woman stood up and stepped back from the shore. Namora felt a chill up her spine and narrowed her eyes at her. “HERE! SHE’S HERE!” The woman screamed and ran back from Namora and several knights ran out of the bushes and toward the ocean. Namora tried to swim back but one of the knights was quick enough to fire an arrow into her shoulder. Two others ran into the water and grabbed Namora.
The warrior struggled and fought back, she was able to push one away from her. Two more knights came and threw a net of Namora and the archer fired another arrow that landed in the Talokan’s leg. Namora screamed in pain and the four knights dragged the net onto the sand while she tried to get out. The blonde woman ran over to the water and grabbed Namora’s weapon.
“King Stark will be pleased.” One of the knights said.
“Good work, Kara.” The other knight said to the blonde woman.
“A pleasure, sirs!” Kara smirked and walked over to Namora who was glaring at her. “You are quite a fierce warrior...Let’s see if your king will come to get you.”
Namora’s eyes grew wide, of course, the plan was to capture Namor. She knew he would do exactly as the woman said and this caused her to struggle out of the net.
Kara raised the spear and stabbed Namora’s hand, “Stop struggling!”
Namora grunted in pain and felt her strength leaving her.
“Get the carriage, now!” Kara ordered the men.
Namora felt her vision begin to blur and the last thing she saw was the shore.
“What is taking so long?” One of the knights let go of the knight and walked into the forest path to find the carriage. One by one the knights went after the other to investigate and all that was left was Kara, Namora, and a knight.
“I don’t like this...What if the king is already here?” The knight said.
“Impossible, we would’ve seen him come from the ocean.” Kara scoffed.
“The king is the least of your worries.” A grim voice echoed through their surroundings.
“N-No...It can’t be...” Kara began to tremble.
“Why are you here, witch?! This doesn’t concern you!” The knight unsheathed his sword.
“Oh, but everything around my home does.” The voice replied.
“You’re responsible for the other knights not returning, aren’t you?” The knight said.
“You killed them!” Kara screamed.
“In the end, we all die. I’m simply speeding up the process.” The voice was now behind the two.
Kara and the knight turned around to see a woman in a black dress with a demonic face. The two screamed and dark thorns shot from the woman’s cloak into their chests. The two collapsed onto the ground, lifeless. The woman’s demonic face disappeared into her normal features. Her green eyes looked down at Namora who was passed out.
“What do we have here?” She tilted her head.

BBC's Merlin Season 1 Episode 6: A Remedy to Cure All Ills Analysis
Spoilers for the show
This episode is interestingly about Gaius, it is his arc we see here, not Merlin's or Arthur's and so this is a very interesting episode to watch because it is a vision of the world of Uther, and a vision of Gaius' own flaws. It is a world Merlin and Arthur will one day change and redeem, but as of yet this is a story more about the past then the present.
Gaius
This is something I believe I will come back to later, I'm pretty sure there's another episode later on that also addresses this idea and that is Gaius' deeply flawed nature. We as an audience love Gaius, he's a good character and Merlin loves him like a father, so we can't really help but love him too. But Gaius is flawed in perhaps one of the most dangerous ways, he is not cruel or even a bad person in any real way, but he is a coward. He is the person who in the face of injustice stands by and does nothing. His flaw is in some ways the most understandable, at least for me, its hard to be brave and to oppose power is not easy. Gaius has been a coward and has been complicit in the pain and deaths of so many in his silence, although arguably there wasn't really anything he could of done to stop it. This is revealed most of all in an exchange he has with Kilgharrah (though the 'blind eye' is also mentioned with Edwin).
Gaius: I will not choose between them (Uther and Merlin)
Kilgharrah: Then turn a blind eye. That is, after all, your talent
This is one of the first times we've seen Kilgharrah openly express emotion aside from telling Merlin about his destiny, its perhaps the first hint that he is more personally invested than he lets on. And its in an interactions with Gaius, and you can hear the disdain in his voice. This dragon has been a mouthpiece for destiny, for everything that's going to happen, he's a mouthpiece for the future and in this you realise that he and Gaius have a past, that there is more darkness in the past then we've previously understood. In this you realise that Gaius has failed to be the person he should've been, he's been a coward, and he has betrayed an entire people in his silence.
Gaius elects to turn a blind eye again by leaving, in some ways he's choosing Merlin but in leaving he's making it so he's not really making that choice, he's leaving whatever will happen in other hands. And Gwen says one of the most powerful lines in the show when he tells her that he has no choice.
"In life we always have a choice sometimes its easier to think that you don't."
Cause we do, Gwen's right. It's dangerous and easy to think that you don't have any choice but one, and everyone in this show makes that mistake at some point. Uther probably thinks that he has no choice but to persecute magic users because they're are evil. Everyone seeking revenge on Uther thinks they have no choice but to do so, and in doing no choice but to let collateral damage happen. Because if you accept that there is a choice then you accept responsibility for your actions, you accept that you are responsible for any damage you cause. You may still make the choice, but you are accepting that it is a choice you choose and the results are one's you have chosen to be acceptable. But I also love Gwen's response when Gaius tells her that he is choosing to leave, its a non-choice and also in Gwen's view its the wrong choice, but she doesn't judge him at all for it. She just says "then I'll miss you." She doesn't expect him to be brave, and she continues to care about him even as he doesn't do the right thing.
There is another note here that will be of more relevance later on. Gaius is and has been a coward, but Merlin is his redemption. Merlin is the redemption for everything Gaius has done (or hasn't done) that has helped facilitate Uther's regime. Obviously in sheltering Merlin, Gaius is already rebelling in a more meaningful way then he has in years but later in the show he will make choices to support Merlin and his destiny that will redeem him, and like so much of the show it is for the love of Merlin that he makes them, emphasising the importance of love once again.
Edwin
In many ways this is an uncomfortable episode for someone who is both not a kid and has already watched the whole show. Out of every villain in the show, Edwin is in some ways set up as the least villainous. He takes no collateral damage, he risks Morgana's life yes but ultimately he gets Gaius fired and tries to kill Uther. He doesn't even try to kill Gaius until the end, his revenge is so proportional, so seemingly justified, he hates Gaius but he doesn't try to kill him. Ultimately the show (in this episode at least) doesn't really address that complexity, they have some last minute making Edwin more evil ( he tells Merlin that they could be all-powerful together, the trying to kill Gaius and Merlin (though that was an under danger from them situation), and his parents having practiced dark magic). This ultimately succeeds, and we can go away happy in the knowledge that good triumphed over evil. This works this early in the show, this early on and we are not really sure how to feel about magic, how to feel about the great purge, how to feel about Uther, so we can accept the shows presentations of Merlin protecting Uther with little questions.
Ultimately I'm not opposed to Merlin protecting Uther, but that's largely due to how the show questions it later, because the show does address it. It does address whether or not Uther should be protected when honestly most of those seeking revenge are at least justified in the killing Uther part of their revenge.
But this has not been addressed yet, so we're left with a villain who ultimately did not seem that evil being killed and then Uther being saved.
This is also paired with this episode being perhaps the first one to truly address the horror of the great purge. Edwin's backstory is chilling, the scars on his face are there because he tried to run into the fire to save his parents when they were being burnt at the stake by Uther. There's also this sense of a barely spoken history between all the older characters, Geoffrey and Gaius don't want to remember that time, Kilgharrah reminds Gaius of how he turns a blind eye, and even in Uther and Gaius right at the end.
Uther: Do you remember them, his parents?
Gaius: I remember them all, sire
This happens, even after everything that has happened in the episode, so the episode itself doesn't even entirely erase the confusion regarding Edwin, and we don't really know who was really right. It's also an interesting moment for Uther, a moment where we see his resolve about magic slightly shift, and there is a hint of unacknowledged guilt there.
The fact that immediately after this Uther apologises to Gaius really cements this, Uther rarely admits he's wrong and he only does so when his own sense of his rightness has been questioned. He doesn't admit he was wrong with magic (and he never will), but that feeling perhaps prompts him to be able to admit he was wrong to Gaius.
Why Gaius serves Uther
Now this is a question that's hard to answer, because ultimately Gaius does serve Uther loyally for much of the show, rarely opposing him and it goes somewhat beyond just not being able to do anything else because Uther's the king, and Gaius both can't do anything but also just isn't a very brave person (though that is certainly part of it). We do find out later that Gaius ultimately doesn't think Uther's a bad king, he believes that Uther on the whole is fair to most of his people (except magic users), he's not great but he's better than a lot would be. And you see the hint of that in:
Gaius: You have always done what you believed to be right
Gaius perhaps sees in Uther a king who isn't purely driven by selfishness, a king who does genuinely seek to act in the interests of the people, and I guess that's probably better than most kings.
I also think there's a warning in that, a warning about doing purely what you believe to be right. And by that I mean acting purely in accordance with your own feelings without reference to the possibility of being wrong. Doing what you feel to be right is not always the right choice, and its something Merlin does often consider, not only because consequences are often far beyond what one person can consider, but because you may be wrong. Every person is blinded by their own experiences, Uther's blinded by his anger and hate and he mistakes that for righteousness.
Also, ultimately I might note, Gaius is physician. Most of the time serving Uther does not ask too much of him, he saves lives, he helps people, he doesn't usually have to participate in the bad. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that he still does occasionally, and he is reasonably loyal.
I enjoyed this episode, but its never been one of my favourites and it's hard to go away from this one entirely satisfied that all right ends have been achieved. The show chooses not to fully address the moral complexity at the heart of it yet, and that's fine this is after all a children's show and we are still so early in it but that does mean that in setting up complexity and not going through with it there is a level of dissatisfaction, as we struggle really to know if right really won here.

strawberries & cigarettes by troye whatshisface but it's winteriron (idk if this is a prompt or just a statement you can take it as either)
Bucky doesn’t like the fact that he’s going to a stupid fucking private school. He doesn’t like that this is his mother’s sacrifice, that she stays up late with the bills and works another job so that he can go there and make a living.
He doesn’t even know what he wants to do in life, that’s the thing. Mom thinks that he’s going to be a really good businessman and she doesn’t know that he smokes outside his window and sometimes just doesn’t retain any sort of information at school because he has to be good.
“I sacrifice so much for you,” she tells him one night. “You need to make a good living for yourself. Promise me.”
And he does. Hell if he knows how he’s going to keep it, but that’s the promise.
-
The one kid that he absolutely hates at school is Tony Stark. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a whole silverware drawer at the ready in case he doesn’t like the spoon.
Tony’s kind of wealth is the kind that is so astronomically high that at some point you have to wonder what it means to him. Because it doesn’t seem to mean anything.
He shows up in the shittiest sneakers he’s ever seen, held together with tape and drawn on by someone else. His hair is never styled, his uniform is never washed, and yet he just exudes that kind of confidence that comes with knowing that your life is better than anyone else’s, kind of.
He’s also an ass in class. Correcting teachers, derailing the topic, and acting like it all is beneath him.
They say he’s a genius, going to take over his father’s company. He has his future set in stone, and so there’s nothing else for him to learn. Bucky’s not really sure if he’s a genius or not, because he’s pretty sure a genius could figure out when to leave shit alone.
Everyone at St. Anthony’s knows that Bucky is an individual who does well on his own. At most, you say hello and move on. He doesn’t talk to anyone, he makes sure he doesn’t look like he talks to anyone, and he’s said multiple times that he doesn’t want to talk to anyone.
Tony Stark, however, talks. Doesn’t matter what the subject is, he talks.
Bucky gets nicknames. Because of his...frigid demeanor, this means that Tony calls him shit like “Ice Pop,” “Icicle,” “Mr. Freeze,” and any other nickname that’s applicable to cold.
“Hey Snowball,” Tony says in class. “You finished with your presentation for English class? Mine still sucks, although I’m sure it’ll be better than Hammer’s.”
“That’s not saying a lot,” Bucky mutters. “At all. Now shut up. It’s class.”
“We all know it’s going to be boring,” Tony says. “Sitwell has the personality of a tumbleweed, and you’re so much more interesting to talk to.”
Bucky doesn’t respond to that.
“Ah, so we’re at the no-talking stage, darling. I’ll make it up to you. Ice cream? Dinner? Elaborate cruise trip in summer?”
Bucky rolls his eyes, and Tony quiets for roll call, but says one last comment.
“I think I’m going to do the presentation in Comic Sans. Thoughts?”
“I wish you didn’t have thoughts, then maybe you’d leave me alone.”
Tony laughs.
“You’re cute, Barnes. Cute. You know I don’t leave anyone alone.”
-
There’s a bad day. Bucky gets those sometimes. Every day of his life is a bad day, almost, but this one? The absolute worst.
He had nightmares, barely got any sleep, and found out that his little sister used up the last of his shampoo, so he had to use his mom’s and now he smells like “Strawberry Paradise.”
He hates the day, and it’s not even eight o’clock yet.
Tony Stark, of course, makes it worse. He talks incessantly about something related to robotics or the weather or music or whatever, and Bucky just sees red.
"Can you shut up for one fucking second of your life?” he hisses at him. “Oh my fucking god, it doesn’t matter. Nothing you say matters at all to me.”
-
Tony’s heard a lot of shit like that. Like, a lot. Probably worse.
But for some reason, it’s hurting more coming from Bucky Barnes.
Tony doesn’t shut up. He knows that. Everyone knows that. He has legitimately given people headaches. His dad has timed his talking and limited him to about two minutes. It would’ve been even less, but at family therapy they’re trying to work on “empathy for others.”
(A crock of bullshit, because Tony’s fairly sure his dad doesn’t know what that is.)
Bucky’s...he’s different. Sure, he hates Tony. Everyone does, and to be completely frank, Tony likes it that way. You know where you stand, how you can be interpreted if people only feel one thing about you.
But Bucky is perhaps the only interesting person Tony knows at this hellhole of a school. He works really hard on his assignments, has more to work on than other kids. He looks frustrated at math equations, but stays and pores over textbooks after school.
He brings a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every single day. Tony thinks the last time he had one was at a birthday party when he was twelve, and even then it wasn’t really a sandwich but more of a deconstructed concept thing that probably cost two hundred bucks a plate.
-
Now that Tony’s ruminating on it, it’s probably because no one has exactly told him that what he says doesn’t matter. They just say they don’t wanna hear about it. The two concepts are honestly very different. Tony has a sneaking suspicion that he is going to go into a tailspin about this on a Thursday night at two in the morning.
Ha. On a Thursday night at two in the morning. What odd phrasing that is, why is that so weird? It’s night, but it’s morning and you’re supposed to be asleep but morning is a wake-up time, so--
Oh, there’s the meaning.
Why would you discuss a night and a morning? Why does it matter? On a Thursday?
Tony wonders how much shit he’s said that just ultimately doesn’t matter.
This gets him thinking about how much nothing in his life matters. Don’t get him wrong, he knew it.
Knew it in the way everyone tells him he’ll be the next Howard Stark.
Knows it in the way that his own father isn’t exactly all too fond of him and Tony has a problem looking at anything with dear old Captain America because of comparisons that his father makes and honestly he probably almost named Tony “Steve.”
Could you imagine him having the name of Steve? God, he’d barf.
-
For some reason, this is the worst he’s ever felt. Sure his father hates him and his mother could be considered an absentee at best, but what gets him to cry into his pillow and rethink his entire existence is a guy who has eye circles darker than anyone else’s and thinks that wearing any bright color is “branching out into alternative fashion.”
God, he wishes he had a break.
Nothing you say matters to me.
This is the phrase that gets him. Tony is pretty sure it’s because it’s what everyone thinks.
-
Ever since then, Tony doesn’t talk to Bucky. Ever.
And that’s...that’s weird to Bucky. It was routine. Tony annoys him, he snaps a bit, and then it starts all over.
Tony looks at him, sometimes. As if he’s some sort of impossible problem he can’t figure out.
When Bucky actually thinks about it, Tony hasn’t really talked to anyone. He’s still himself, which is irritating, but he’s not talking about anything and everything and filling up space.
It’s...odd.
He feels a little bit bad because what he said was super shitty and he shouldn’t have said it, but now it’s too late to just kind of awkwardly apologize, and Bucky’s already shit at apologizing anyway.
-
Summer arrives with a bang. School is let out ,and in comes the ninety-degree-days that melt your damn head off. Bucky’s apartment doesn’t have AC, so their windows are permanently open and fans are blasting as they swear they’re melting.
Bucky needs a job. Preferably one with air conditioning.
He finds one as a driver. Rich people hate taxis, it’s a huge health hazard or whatever they wanna say. He’s not gonna ask. But a nice man named Edwin hands him keys to a damn Cadillac and tells him not to drive too close to the other cars and be careful, because he wasn’t supposed to start the job quite yet, but “something came up.”
-
Tony fucking Stark. That’s who he’s fucking driving.
“Oh my god,” Bucky groans. He sees Tony get into the car.
“Hey, Jarvis told me I had a new driver, it’s really nice to--oh my fucking god.”
“Where are you driving to.”
“Queens.”
“Queens, seriously?”
Queens isn’t the type of place for someone like Stark to go to. He’s supposed to say Saks Fifth Avenue or Gucci or wherever the hell rich people go when they’re not vacationing in Europe or elsewhere. Not Queens. Especially not Queens.
“It doesn’t matter where I’m going so long as you know where to drive,” Tony says.
“Sheesh. Okay.”
The rest of the drive is silent. It’s not like Bucky can do small-talk. Jesus, he’d rather take his other arm off than do that.
And Tony, obviously, is not going to say anything. Not after hearing that stellar set of remarks from school.
It’s a school. There are kids out front, who practically swarm the vehicle.
“Should I be concerned?”
“No, they do this every week. If you drive the car back home, Jarvis will explain more. You were kind of an ‘on the spot’ hire for us.”
“Got it.”
-
Jarvis is a kindly old man who Bucky would trust with his Social Security number.
He is also extremely loyal to Tony, at least.
“He helps out with some after-school program at one of the local schools,” Jarvis says, smiling softly. “Has a spot in his heart for the children.”
“What’s he do?”
“Oh, helps them with schoolwork. I think he does some improvement type jobs around there, but he won’t let us know. Secretive, that one.”
Bucky sips his tea and doesn’t say anything about how Tony once told everyone in the class that he was wearing neon yellow boxers and they were the comfiest damn boxers he had. It’s just not pertinent to this conversation.
“You know him, Mr. Barnes?”
“Um, yeah. We go to school together. I’ve seen him around.”
“He’s a good student. Always getting straight A’s. Doesn’t always seem like it, but he listens well. Just has a different method.”
“That’s for sure.”
-
For the next two weeks, it’s silence. Always. Bucky will turn on the radio and that’s it. The only thing that Tony has said is to “please change the channel to literally anything” when Belinda Carlisle’s infamously terrible “Heaven is a Place on Earth” came on.
And that’s it. Seriously.
When it is two weeks and four days, Bucky can’t take it anymore.
“Look. I have this job for at least two more months. I’m talking to you. So tell me what you’re doing today.”
“Teaching.”
“Wow, way to be descriptive,” Bucky says sarcastically.
Tony knows he shouldn’t throw it back in his face. But honestly, truly, this is pissing him off.
“Oh I’m sorry, does what I say matter to you now? Is that what this is?”
“Oh come on. That was months ago.”
"Not the point!” Tony says. “I’m getting out now. Feel free to pick me up or not. I don’t give a fuck. But don’t you pretend for a damn minute that you give a shit about my reaction since you’ve already made your point.”
The car door is slammed.
Bucky is in somewhat of a pickle.
-
Sam tells him that he’s, quote, “the stupidest motherfucker on the planet.”
And then hangs up.
thank you for being such a good friend sam. really appreciate it.
aw look at the little bitch boy mad because i called him stupid. shut up i’m on a date and don’t care once about you. at all.
i think what i really like about our friendship is how open and empathetic you are to my feelings
do you know how unattractive you are? on a scale of one to ten? prussia.
you can’t count now?
no i can count i’m just saying you shouldn’t exist.
god i hate you. i’ll talk to you next month
(Yes, they have a time limit to texts. Once a month. And Bucky used his to try to get advice like an idiot. He should’ve just asked Steve. Steve probably would’ve sent him money for a milkshake.)
-
Sharon, upon reading his text, sends him back one message:
so i read this but i’m not emotionally invested. can u make a playlist and send it to me?
oh my god. you have got to be kidding me.
i’m not. i told you that u need to b more creative in life. b spontaneous!!!
He leaves her on read after that.
-
Bucky has to figure out how to apologize. Genuinely. Because nothing’s worse than having an apology made but knowing that the person isn’t really meaning it, they’re only saying it to make people more comfortable.
(He wonders how many times someone’s apologized to Tony because of this reason.)
He’s not exactly sure how to go about apologizing.
But he figures it’s sooner rather than later, so he takes the subway to Manhattan and then gets a bike (that’s not exactly his, but he’s bringing it back) and starts the trek to the mansion. It’s a good and solid thirty minute bike ride.
-
Tony is having a rather uncomfortable family birthday dinner. Howard’s, to be specific. He’s not sure why they didn’t just go out, but maybe his father is tired of acting like a happy family in public. God knows Tony is.
(“What’s your favorite thing about your son?” An interviewer had asked cheerily, blush lipstick stretching widely as she smiled.
“Well, it’s certainly not his sense of style,” Howard had joked.
He didn’t know what his favorite thing about his son was. He couldn’t answer the fucking question.)
Jarvis mentions that “Sir Anthony” has a visitor at the door.
“Are you serious, kid?” Howard says, hissing. “You told someone to come over? During a family event?”
"No, of course not,” Tony says hurriedly. He doesn’t have anyone over to the house period. Too much risk, not enough payoff. There was also the fact that the house is basically like a mausoleum because both of his parents would rather be caught dead than spend time in one another’s company anymore.
“I’ll go...I’ll go check who it is.”
-
Bucky. Fucking. Barnes.
“What are you doing here?” Tony hisses.
“I came to apologize.”
“For what?”
“For telling you that your words don’t matter?” Bucky says, more of a question. “I don’t know what else I would apologize for. Maybe for mean-mugging you. I don’t know.”
“Why?” Tony asks, tiredly. “Why would you apologize for that?”
“Because it’s obviously affecting you and also I know I was in the wrong? That’s why people apologize?” Bucky answers. “What I did was shitty. What you say matters, I was just having a shitty day and I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. It obviously stuck with you a lot longer than I thought it would. So now I’m apologizing.”
No one besides Jarvis has ever apologized to Tony. Ever. Not in a genuine way.
“Did you...did you bike here? You have a bike?”
“What? No.”
“You walked here?” Tony asks, incredulous.
“Of course not, then I’d be arriving, like, an hour later. No, the bike isn’t mine.”
“Who’s is it?”
“I don’t know, some hipster’s from Brooklyn.”
“You stole a bike?”
“The circumstances weren’t ideal, but I don’t have a car to drive to your freakishly large house,” Bucky said bluntly.
Tony grins.
“Well then, Buckster, welcome. Let me give you a ride home.”
He pokes his head into the dining room, where the plates are already being cleared.
“Hey, I gotta give my friend a ride home. Car broke down a couple miles from here.”
“Why don’t you just fix it?” Howard asks. “You’re a Stark.”
“A Stark who would need to order a part for a 1980 Ford Crown Victoria.”
“Tell him to get a better car.”
“Sure, pops.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Alright, Dear Father of Mine.”
“Just go, damn it!”
-
Bucky is led to a garage full of luxury cars that probably cost more than his whole block put together.
“Which one you wanna go in?”
“Am I allowed in one of these? Holy fuck these are nice.”
Tony grins.
“Best part about having a car is driving it. Choose one.”
Bucky chooses a bright red car, a smooth Cadillac.
“Holy hell, this is cool.”
Tony drives.
He’s a good driver once you get past the fact that you will fear for your life for at least twenty minutes. He is also notoriously terrible in the city traffic, yelling at drivers and pedestrians alike.
“How are you still alive with the way you drive?” Bucky asks.
“We made it, didn’t we?” Tony asks, grinning. “Now go return your bike and don’t try to walk to my house again.”
“See you tomorrow?”
“Naturally.”
-
Tony talks a lot. But Bucky finds himself listening. It still takes a while, but he talks.
Tony really is smart. His mind just works quickly, and that’s why at school he never really seems to absorb anything.
Bucky tells him about his neighborhood and how much he hates his neighbor because she keeps blasting music at one in the morning.
“So? Blast it in the morning,” Tony says. “That’s what I’d do.”
“Ma would say no.”
“Then don’t tell her!”
-
When it all changes, it’s when Bucky picks him up from a gala. He gets the following text:
pls come pick me up!! please! i’m begging!
It’s eleven at night, but Bucky sighs and goes to get the car and goes to pick him up.
Tony’s swaying outside. Bucky gets out, getting a pack of Marlboro out of his jacket.
“Shouldn’t smoke,” Tony says.
“You drunk?”
“No, can’t risk it when Howard and Maria aren’t here--mom and dad.”
He almost never calls his parents mom and dad. Ever. Only in public settings.
Bucky lights up anyway. Tony stares at the orange embers flaring up.
“Why did you need a ride?”
“Kind of avoiding an old...enemy. Slash ex-boyfriend.”
“The worst kind of enemy to have. He trying to talk to you?”
“It’s been an all-night event, so--”
The doors burst open.
Out walks the sleaziest guy that Bucky’s ever seen. His suit is garishly designer, the kind that borders on being confused for a tacky suit that you find in a thrift store for two dollars total.
“Tony, baby! Where have you been? I wanted to discuss things with you...in private.”
He gives Bucky a once-over.
“And who are you, catering?”
Bucky immediately wants to clock this guy in the damn mouth.
“Actually this is James, my boyfriend,” Tony says, snaking his arm around Bucky’s waist.
At this point, he’ll just have to go with it. It’s not the worst thing that’s happened.
“And who are you?” Bucky asks. “Sweetheart, you never mentioned you knew someone with such a...unique take on style.”
“I’m Ty, an old and close friend,” he says. He sticks his hand out. Bucky makes him switch hands by holding out his metal hand.
“Nice to see you,” he says. “But unfortunately, I have to take my guy back home. Plans and all that, you know how it is.”
“Bye Ty!” Tony says.
Bucky throws an arm around Tony’s shoulders, bringing him close. A ghost of a kiss to the forehead completes the lie, and Bucky looks back towards Ty, who has his eyes narrowed.
He flips him off with his right hand. (It’s satisfying.)
“Thank you so much for going along with that,” Tony says, looking up.
The cigarette is still in his mouth. He takes a drag, letting embers fall down and disintegrate into the pavement.
“He seemed like a shitty kind of person.”
“Not the best of people, that’s for sure,” Tony mutters. “You wanna go get ice cream?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’d like that.”
-
Getting late night ice cream is like going into a different dimension. Bucky’s not sure if it’s the overbearing, fluorescent white light that gets to him, but Tony seems tired. At ease, but tired.
He gets strawberry ice cream, and Bucky gets chocolate.
They sit and eat for a moment.
“Why do you go to St. Anthony’s?” Tony asks. “It’s clear you hate it.”
“You don’t?”
“Not the worst school I’ve been sent to.”
“You don’t want to be there either?”
“There are a lot of places I don’t want to be, but this isn’t about me, I’m asking about you. You wanna share with the class or get a hall pass?”
Bucky snorts.
“Geez, okay. My mom really wants a good education for me.”
"She know that you don’t know what to do?”
“And how do you figure that?” Bucky asks, eyebrow raised.
“You wouldn’t be working as a chauffeur for the rich kid if you knew what you were working towards,” Tony says with a shrug. “Seen it happen before. Usually I don’t know who they are, but you figure out commonalities pretty quickly.”
That makes too much sense.
“I have no fucking clue how I’m living my life and my mom wants me to become a businessman.”
“You wanna do that?”
“Do I look like the kind of guy that wants to wear a suit?”
“You look like you’d look good in a suit, not that you’d wear one.”
Bucky laughs. Takes a bite of ice cream, and readjusts the pack of cigarettes in his pocket.
-
Over the summer, he and Tony get closer. They take walks in the park and Tony drags him into overpriced shops to look at clothes that are the ugliest goddamn things they’ve ever seen.
At some point, they hold hands and discuss secrets of the world of theirs that is unique to them.
Bucky kisses him one night while they’re just leaving perhaps the worst restaurant in the entire state of New York and god Tony didn’t think he’d ever not mind being wrapped up in fake-strawberry scented hair and cigarette smoke clinging to clothing, but he doesn’t mind it.
The whole summer, they’re inseparable. Tony chatters in the front seat of the car, now, and Bucky smiles a little bit more.
They walk in parks together and show each other funny little jokes and make inside understandings and look at sunsets and sunrises and get coffee and look at each other across the room.
-
It’s love, honest and true. But it’s not love like the never-ending kind. The thing about love is that it is not included in any toolbox, physical or mental. There is one thing that everyone knows regardless of whether it is admitted or not:
Love does not solve everything. It does not fix everything. And one should never rely on it to do anything but exist and work through your person to the best of its ability.
-
Howard comes back from a business trip. Sees Tony kiss Bucky goodbye, and that is that.
You can’t something like that as a son. It just...it won’t work for business.
Tony is sent to a boarding school upstate. Stricter guidelines, more controlling.
Bucky only hears one thing from Tony:
I’m sorry.
And he doesn’t believe it.
When you’re young, you think love is invincible. You think it survives through everything if you really want it to.
Love doesn’t do that.
Bucky writes letters, calls Jarvis, and mourns the loss of young love. He smokes a little bit more, leaves it clinging to his skin as a reminder that Tony would always wrinkle his nose in that adorable way, but it served to show Bucky that he had a bad habit.
He was in the middle of quitting.
His mother notices it.
Tells him that he needs to get his own shampoo.
“You can’t just use mine all the time,” she says playfully.
He remembers Tony’s hands gently threading through his hair in disbelief as Bucky kissed the living hell out of him.
Now there’s barely any trace.
He stops in his tracks when he sees an old coffee cup of Tony’s in his kitchen cabinet.
“When did you get this one?” Becca asks. She’s drinking out of it. He remembers Tony smiling over it at their little coffee shop that was hidden away. “I love it. It’s so cute.”
“From a thrift store,” Bucky says. “You can have it.”
“Really? Thanks!”
-
Tony pauses at the smell of cigarette smoke. Remembers blue eyes blazing along with orange embers, smoke curling around long hair and long summer nights.
His roommate at this new school asks if he smokes, if he can get him a pack.
“Uh, no. Just used to know someone who did.”
“You think they could get me a pack?”
“They don’t go here.”
“You can’t call them?”
Tony doesn’t respond.
You can’t call them?
He’s almost texted him about twenty times. Called him about thirty.
He knows the number by heart.
But he knows that Howard made him get a new phone, and now the memories are fading. He wishes he still had the pictures.
-
Love does not always last. Sometimes it is not meant to. Tony tries to tell himself that as he wakes up with tears streaming down his cheeks.
You always wish it would.

Agent Russel probably doesn’t deserve this. Probably.
-
The next day, when Agent Russel showed up for his tuna melt, it was served to him by a woman in the same uniform any of the other waitresses wore. As she set the plate in front of him, another came to refill his coffee cup.
“Thanks, ladies,” he murmured, raising the cup to his lips.
“Don’t mention it,” said Peggy.
Agent Russel looked up with a start. His brown eyes darted from Peggy to Kay and then back again, and his expression suggested he was seriously considering screaming. Peggy sat down across from him at his booth, and Kay took the seat next to him, blocking his escape.
“Not a sound,” said Peggy.
Something under the table went click, sounding suspiciously like a gun being cocked. Kay, her hands invisible, gave Agent Russel a dazzling smile.
“So you two are working together,” Russel said.
“Don’t look so nervous, Ned,” said Kay. “You’re flirting with two waitresses at once. You should be a happy man.”
“What do you want?” he asked.
“Your help,” Peggy replied.
“Why would I want to help you?”
“Because we’re the ones who found Captain America,” said Peggy. “Doesn’t that suggest we’re the good guys?”
“I don’t know who are the good guys in this,” Russel admitted. “Last time I saw you,” he pointed at Peggy, “you were going home in protest because Thompson was working with her,” his finger moved to Kay, “and she drugged and robbed me.”
“I apologized,” said Kay.
“Now suddenly you’re on the same side?”
“Kay persuaded me that we always have been,” Peggy said, though that still wasn’t totally true. “Remember those numbers I mentioned she gave me? Those were the key to the Captain’s location. Kay is not a spy, she’s a defector. She has information for us, and she thinks she knows how to get more out of Olga Barynova.”
Russel nodded slowly, although his expression remained skeptical. “And where does she come into this? Because she says you let her out of prison and flew her to Los Angeles yourself.”
“Did she say why?” asked Peggy.
“We haven’t been able to get that out of her,” Russel said.
Peggy laced her fingers together in front of her. “I’m afraid it’s true that I let Miss Underwood out of her cell,” she said, “but I did so with every intention of returning her to it, and because I needed a service I felt only she could provide. I’m sure you’ve heard of Whitney Frost?”
“Yes…” said Russel slowly. “She’s that actress who went nuts and murdered her husband, right?”
“There’s a bit more to the story than that.” Peggy leaned in a bit closer. “Let me explain. You can check what I say with Daniel Sousa and Edwin Jarvis, and they will tell you the same.”
Russel looked around, and then opened his briefcase to get a notebook. “All right. Let’s hear it.”
Peggy tried to be as quick as she could in describing the situation, but it was not a simple one and it took a while. They probably went on significantly beyond the break two waitresses would have gotten, but it was essential that Russel get details he could confirm if he liked. In particular she described how they’d dressed Dottie for the mission, how Mr. Jarvis had observed that she was an excellent dancer, and what they’d been able to learn as a result.
“Unfortunately, Miss Underwood is better than you are from escaping the trunks of cars,” Peggy finished, “and we haven’t seen her since.”
“Uh-huh,” said Russel. “If any of that is true… well, freeing her was still a stupid thing to do.”
“Yes, it was,” Peggy said, “and I regret it every time I hear she’s committed another robbery or ended another life. However,” she gestured to her companion. “Kay thinks she knows what Dottie’s trying to accomplish, and if she’s correct we can get good information from her. We obviously can’t get in to talk to her because, as you already noted, we’re supposed to be in jail with her. But you can.”
Russel frowned, thinking. “What are you two up to?” he asked. “What are you trying to do?”
“Make the future a little better than it’s stacking up to be,” said Kay.
“If we can find out where Dottie and her ilk came from, we can shut them down and make sure we don’t see any more like her,” Peggy said. “And possibly free American prisoners of war, as well.”
“What would you need me to do?” Russel asked.
“For now just deliver a message and bring back her reply,” said Peggy. “Kay has a page written up. She’ll give you a translation if you want it.”
Kay took the paper out. “If you do this for us, not only will you be potentially saving lives, but I will personally go see your wife and tell her you were supposed to be investigating me and that’s the only reason you had a drink with me, and try to convince her to take you back. I can’t promise miracles,” she added, “but I’ll do my best and my best is pretty damned good.” She offered him the page.
He made no move to take it. Instead he just sat there, apparently lost in thought.
“Agent Russel,” Peggy said, “what was your first impression of me?”
“Of you?” He looked her over. “That you were very, very… devoted… to getting your job done. But my first impression of her,” Russel looked at Kay, “was that she was harmless and flighty, so I’m not sure I trust those anymore. Can I have twenty-four hours to think it over?”
Peggy didn’t want to give it to him. Twenty-four hours was time to think, but it was also time to tell Thompson and Masters they’d been here. Could they afford that? Twenty-four hours from now, Steve would have left New York on the beginning of the publicity tour Masters had put together. If he still wanted to rescue his friend from captivity in Russia, were they going to have to chase him across the country in order to give him their information?
“Can I have your word you won’t go straight to the police?” she asked.
“I am the police,” Russel reminded her, “but yes. I think there’s more going on here than you can see on the surface, but I don’t know which side of it you two are on… especially when you’re pointing a gun at me under the table.”
Kay smiled at him and brought her other hand up to show him a bolt mechanism from a disassembled doorknob, which she’d used to make the metallic click.
“Well,” Peggy said in an American accent. “We’d better get back to our shift. See you tomorrow, Mr. Russel. Same time, same place.”
-
They spent a second restless night in the Pine Barrens. Kay busied herself with some knitting needles and yarn she’d bought in the town, producing some intricate-looking lacy thing Peggy couldn’t begin to identify. Her thoughts were a mystery.
Peggy herself spent the time thinking about what they were going to do if this didn’t work. It seemed to her that they’d have to find Steve, but she really didn’t want him to get involved in this mess. Daniel was in it with her whether she liked it or not, as was Mr. Jarvis, but she would have liked to keep Steve safe.
That was a strange thought, wasn’t it? Steve had always been able to take care of himself, even when he’d been only five foot four, yet Peggy’s urge was to protect him. Was that one of those ‘motherly instincts’ men insisted all women had, or was it just that Peggy wanted to keep everybody she loved safe? She’d failed with Michael. There was a part of her that still thought, no matter how irrational she knew it was, that if she’d only joined the spy corps earlier he would still be alive. Was she trying to make up for that?
What would happen if she just disappeared?
She’d wondered that from time to time, like when Anna Jarvis had been shot… wouldn’t the people she loved be safer if Peggy weren’t around? Without her, Daniel and Mr. Jarvis wouldn’t be in trouble right now. She was the one who’d involved them in the situation with Dottie. The problem with that thought was that the trouble had already come to them. If she were to vanish, they would still end up in prison or worse on the strength of Dottie’s testimony, or perhaps have their fates dangled like carrots to encourage Peggy to return. She couldn’t stand for that. She’d gotten them in trouble, she had to get them out of it.
Which meant she’d better come up with a backup plan in case Russel wouldn’t help.
-
They scoped out the Automat very carefully before returning the next day, making sure there were no suspicious fellows hanging around watching who came and went. Peggy saw none, and Kay agreed with her. They went inside and changed into Angie’s spare uniforms, Kay putting a few safety pins in hers so it would look like it fit. When Agent Russel arrived, they took him his usual and sat down across from him. This time, they did not bother with sound effects.
“I didn’t talk to the police,” he said. “But I felt like I had to talk to somebody… so I talked to Captain America.”
Peggy’s heart started beating a little faster. “How on Earth did you manage that?” she asked. Steve and Masters had left New York early that morning. They’d heard it on their car radio.
“I told Jack I wanted to meet him in person because he’s always been a hero of mine, Jack talked to Masters, and Masters let me in,” Russel explained.
“Wow. I’m momentarily glad I didn’t kill him yet,” said Kay.
“Please stop that,” Peggy told her.
“If you want something fun to do on your weekends,” Kay said to Russel, “take a look at what Vernon Masters was up to around… oh, 1943-ish.”
“Do you know something I don’t?” Peggy asked her. A foolish question, really… Kay always knew something nobody else did, or at least, she acted that way.
“In this case, no,” Kay replied, “but I have strong suspicions.”
Peggy shook her head and brought things back to Russel. “What did he say? Steve, I mean.”
“Well, he told me to call him Steve,” Russel said, “which was a little like meeting one of your schoolteachers as an adult and having him tell you to call him by his name. I told him what you were asking me to do, and… he said he doesn’t know about Miss Lake, himself, but he trusts Peggy Carter with his life and I should do what she asks. He seemed pretty sure you know what you’re doing.”
Peggy had to chuckle at that. “He has such faith in me,” she said. Of course, she had faith in Steve, too… he’d always done the most recklessly foolish things imaginable, but he’d always managed to make them work in spite of everything. “Thank you, Agent Russel.”
“I still don’t know what’s going on here,” Russel admitted, “but I don’t think Captain America would involve himself with traitors. I read the file the FBI gave me about you, and I remember thinking there must have been some kind of mistake. That was my instinct from the beginning.” He glanced at Kay… the woman who’d given him cause to doubt his instincts. “What’s this message?”
Kay unfolded it and handed it over – a page of pseudo-Cyrillic accomplished with an ordinary English typewriter and going over some of the letters two or three times. “I think I know what she wants. She’s amassing money and blackmail material. She’s going after the mob now because she wants to force a diplomat with criminal connections to smuggle her back into the USSR. If she tries to go there legitimately, or even secretly but without protection, she’ll be shot. She needs to enter the country unnoticed, and then she’s going after the people who made her.”
“For what? Revenge?” asked Russel.
“Exactly.”
“And you’re going to let her do it?” he guessed.
“On her own she can’t,” said Kay. “She’ll never get that far, or she’ll be caught, and she’ll just disappear from history. But if I’m right, it gives us a bargaining chip.”
“I see.” Russel tucked the message inside his jacket. “I’ll deliver it this afternoon, and if she gives me a reply, I’ll pass it on tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Agent Russel,” Peggy repeated.
They left him to his lunch then, and returned to their stolen car to go back into hiding. Kay still hadn’t broken her habit of checking for seat belts when she got in.
Halfway through New Jersey, she suddenly asked Peggy, “have you see Frankenstein? That was made in the thirties, wasn’t it? Or read the book?”
“I haven’t,” Peggy replied. “I’m not one for the cinema, and the very idea of the book put me off.” As a child she simply hadn’t liked horror stories, and as an adult she’d seen far too many of them in real life to enjoy them in fiction.
“I have,” said Kay. “Several more versions, too, and most of them miss the point. The creature couldn’t help being what he was. The monster was the man who created him.” She sighed. “Everyone treated the creature as a monster, until he decided that was the only thing he could be.”
“Do you believe that of yourself?” Peggy asked.
“I think Barynova might,” Kay replied.

HPHM April Prompts 2021: Day 7: When Your Reflection Plots Against You (Part 3)
What is this, a crossover episode?
Okay, so funny story! The end to the story I’ve been doing recently and today’s prompt are about the same thing, so I sort of have to have them both be the thing for today because yeah! Part 1/3 Part 2/3
Anyway, onto...
Prompt 7: MC’s First Kiss
When Matthew finally came to, he had a pounding headache. He pushed himself up with the guitar case, getting back onto his face, before noticing the mirror. He wasn’t in it. Of course, Matthew thought, I’m the reflection now. He looked behind him, hoping to see where that light had come from. There was nothing. Apart from him, the bathroom was empty. Suddenly, he heard a door creak. On the other side of the mirror, in the real world, Charlie Weasley had walked in. Matthew moved towards the mirror.
“Charlie!” he tried, but to no avail, “Charlie!”
But there was nothing. It was like he was a ghost. Actually, I’m less than a ghost now. He sighed, moving back towards the guitar case. With nothing else to do, he picked up the instrument and slung it onto his back, before leaving the boys’ toilets. It occurred to him that he needed to find Edwin before he did anything too embarrassing, or before he got to his friends.
It was bizarre to see the halls of Hogwarts empty, but with all the same buzz of people moving up and down. It was rather like there being a conversation happening in the other room, but you couldn’t for the life of you find that room. He tried to marshal his thoughts as to where Edwin would go with his body. The lake, obviously, he thought to himself. But something rather strange happened to this alternate Hogwarts as Matthew approached the school grounds. What should have been the quidditch lesson area and the whomping willow, and the Forbidden Forest, was instead an inky black void, with large tubes of light jutting into it from various windows. It was solid, and Matthew couldn’t pass through it. A good way away he could see the grass around the Black Lake.
“So I can’t go anywhere that isn’t reflected.” he deduced aloud. Matthew tried to relax his breathing. This was just another riddle, and he would have to solve it. And for that, he’d need to focus.
“Shut up, Barnaby!”
Matthew twisted around, noticing the images of Merula, Ismelda and Barnaby hanging in the air through a small shield-shaped window. A Prefect’s badge, Matthew thought before leaning in to take a closer look.
“What is it?” Barnaby asked quietly.
“I just...I thought I heard him...” Merula said, her violet eyes scanning the corridor.
“Who?” asked Ismelda, irritated at having to stop.
“Luther, of course!” she snapped. Matthew’s eyes widened. “He was saying something about reflections...”
“Yes, I’m over here!” Matthew yelled. He didn’t care how it had happened, he was just happy that it did.
Merula moved up and down the corridor. “Luther, where the hell are you?!”
Ismelda and Barnaby watched, both very much confused by all of this.
Matthew felt relief wash over him. “Merula, I’m-”
“I’m right here.” came his own voice. Coming into view from the side of the badge was Edwin, wearing his body.
“Oh, there you are.” she said stiffly. Matthew watched as Edwin flicked his braceletless hand at the badge, and he knew he had placed a Silencing Charm on it. Matthew could only pray Merula could sniff Edwin out.
“What’s got you so happy?” she asked with a scowl on her face.
“Oh, nothing really...” Edwin said absentmindedly. “Anyway, what did you want?”
“W-What did I want?” she asked incredulously. “You’re the one who called me over!”
“I’m pretty sure I didn’t.” he said, shrugging. Matthew felt a surge of anger at him.
“Yes you did!” said Merula, exasperated.
Edwin cocked his head, then turned to the other two Slytherins, “Did either of you hear anything?”
“No, I didn’t.” said Ismelda.
“No, nothing.” said Barnaby.
“Well, there you go.” Edwin concluded, “Maybe you’re hearing things.”
“I am not!” Merula yelled, going slightly red.
“Sure. Whatever.” he said, running a hand through Matthew’s hair, “So, you going down to the lake later?”
“W-What? No...” said Merula, confused. Barnaby, however, nodded.
“I am! It’s gonna be great fun!” he exclaimed.
“I don’t care.” Ismelda sneered.
“Mm, it’s just that everyone is going to be there. And I thought, seeing as you can’t go to Hogsmeade, you’d want to go to a party when you could.”
Matthew felt his heart break as he saw Merula’s expression. This wasn’t fair. Nobody treated his mortal enemy like this, especially not someone like Edwin.
“F-Fine, I’ll go.” Merula conceded. “C-Come on, you two.” They stepped into the inky void, Merula wearing an expression that Matthew knew all too well. Fear.
“You could have been a bit nicer, Matt.” came a voice. Matthew realised just which Prefect’s badge he was looking through. And Edwin had no idea.
“Oh...I guess I could.” he admitted, “But I got her to go to the party, and isn’t that what matters?”
“It does if she doesn’t actually want to go.” said Bill Weasley, “You of all people should know that.”
Edwin shrugged, before heading into the void too. Bill must have followed him, for the Prefect badge vanished too. He had to get to the lake quickly, and find Merula and tell her what was happening. From there, however, he was at a bit of a loss. Maybe if he got the book back and managed to reveal the ink, he could find a way to return to his body. That would explain why he didn’t want me to get the book back, he thought. But before all that, he had to actually get to the lake in the first place. He looked up at the tubes of light which splintered the void. Matthew grinned. He’d had an idea, and it wasn’t half bad. He headed up towards Ravenclaw tower at breakneck speed, avoiding the void that appeared in corridors with less mirrors. Eventually, he found his way up to the door to the Common Room. The Eagle knocker looked up at him.
“You are here, yet you are not here.” it said. “Curious. Now, I am at the start of every race, the end of every Bludger, and in the middle of Paris. What am I?”
Matthew thought for a moment, before smirking. “R.”
The eagle nodded, before the door opened.
“Hmm, that’s odd.” said Rowan,as Matthew came in. “ Wonder why the door’s opened...” Matthew sighed as he and the other Ravenclaws looked up and saw right through him.
“I’ll tell you when I get out, Rowan.” he said. There was no reaction. Matthew headed up to his dormitory, where he found his Cleansweep resting against his four-poster bed. He reached for it, hoping, and while his left hand went straight through it, his right hand gripped the wood, the silver bracelet’s carvings glowing as it happened. Matthew grinned, before looking back at the mirror. In it, he could see the Black Lake out the window. He also saw the Cleansweep floating in midair. This gave Matthew another idea. He crept back down to the Common Room, and saw the Ravenclaws’ expressions of pure shock at a floating broom.
“Hey, isn’t that Matthew’s Cleansweep?” said Andre. Matthew couldn’t help but grin as he twirled the broomstick in his hands, causing it to spin. Then, he started to back up into the boys’ dormitory. Rowan, Andre, Tulip and Talbott all followed it until they came to Matthew’s four poster bed. He used the broom to wave at the four, then tried to make a beckoning gesture. After that, he hopped on and flew out the window, leaving them flabbergasted as the pilotless broom headed towards the lake.
It was an odd sensation, flying down a thin strip of the Hogwarts grounds, going over a small fraction of the Whomping Willow, watching students blip in and out of existence. He sped down the hill until he was over the lake, when he noticed a large gathering of students reflected in the water near the shore. He saw that there was a table with food laid out before them. He slowly moved down a few yards away, landing his broom and resting it against a nearby tree. He couldn’t risk Edwin finding out he was here again. Matthew shook his head. He had hoped that third year would be a little less eventful than last year, though he should have known that this would be impossible. Rueing his bad luck, he headed towards the party, not registering four Ravenclaws show up behind him.
“I’m so glad you all made it!” he heard Penny cheer, as the party got underway. At least, it did in the waters of the Black Lake. Matthew, meanwhile, only had a few feet of ground to work with before it gave way to the void. He saw people enter and exit the darkness, until he finally saw Merula. He knew he couldn’t just talk to her, as much as he wanted to. No, he had to find another way. Then, it occurred to him that he had Edwin’s guitar on his back. He set it onto the floor and undid the zip on the leather, before pulling it open.
For an acoustic guitar, it was pretty impressive. It had several magical runes on the wood, and the strings were a brilliant blue, just like the ropes which had pulled him through the mirror. He silently thanked his father for being part of a band when he was younger and pulled out the guitar, putting the strap around his shoulder. Even from here, he could see Edwin moving everyone’s groups away from the lake, especially Merula’s. Matthew had been where she was several times before, feeling like everybody knew how to act at a party except for you. Matthew gritted his teeth, moved towards the lake, both him and the guitar invisible, and started to play.
A A A A, D D, Em Em Em Em, D D…
***
Merula looked up, hearing the sounds of a guitar. It wasn’t a song she recognised, so she assumed it was some Muggle music. She could recognise the chords though. A A A A, D D, Em Em Em Em, D D… though she couldn’t see anyone playing. She walked through the students, ducking out of the way when she saw Matthew. He was talking with Chiara and Penny, but it didn’t look like how Matthew usually talked. Normally, he was reserved, quiet, a little hunched over. Not here. No, here it reminded her of some of the irritating sods in Preston’s gang. Merula scowled, before heading towards the music. Strangely enough, it seemed to be coming from inside the Lake… but that couldn’t be…
“Psst, Merula!”
She looked down into the water. There was her reflection, but next to it stood Matthew Luther, with a rune covered guitar.
“Don’t look at me!” he hissed, “Turn around and act like you don’t see me!”
Merula obeyed, turning on the spot. Secretly, she had been hoping for an explanation for his behaviour today; he had been amicable enough at first, but over the last few hours or so he had become rather cocky and boastful.
“Merula, that isn’t me.” he said, still playing the guitar, “That arse took my body!”
Her eyes widened. “He’s a changeling?!”
“If...if that’s what they’re called, yeah.”
Merula found it in her to smirk. “Really Luther, I forget how little you know about the Wizarding World.”
“It’s not my fault our Defence against the Dark Arts teachers have been rubbish.” he remarked.
“Eh, you’re not wrong there, they have been awful.” she admitted. “So how the hell did this happen?”
“Long story short: Some guy named Edwin appeared in the mirror saying he was trapped and needed help escaping.” Matthew explained, “I agreed, though I didn’t realise just how I’d be helping him.”
Merula stared at Edwin. Yes, she saw it now. It was like a Metamorphmagus had turned into him, or someone had used Polyjuice Potion. That’s why she’d felt so uncomfortable around him. Because it wasn’t Matthew. “So, how do we get him out?”
Matthew looked a little surprised. “Oh, I thought you’d suggest leaving me here.”
She laughed, genuinely, before shaking her head. “Luther, if I left you there this Edwin would have to be my rival. And I don’t like the sound of that at all. You’re my mortal enemy, Luther, and nobody gets to doom you for eternity except me.”
Matthew grinned through the water. “Thanks, Merula. Now, do you have anything reflective on you?” She shuffled through her pockets until she pulled out a silver comb.
“By the way, since when could you play guitar?” she asked, as Matthew appeared in the comb.
“Oh, my Dad taught me. I just know a few songs, though, not much.” he confessed.
“Alright...” began Merula, nervously moving towards the throng of students, “What do we do?”
“There’s a book in my bag called The Ramifications of Our Reflections.” Matthew explained, “It has some text in invisible ink that Edwin really didn’t want me to see, to our best bet is grabbing the book and finding out what it says.”
“Ah, so we’re stealing from him!” she declared quietly.
“Well, no, it’s my book!” Matthew yelled, before adding, “Well, it’s technically Snape’s, but he took it from me, so there.”
They neared the pile of everyone’s bags, and Merula bent down to grab hers, before manoeuvring towards Matthew’s satchel. Slowly, while eyeing the changeling, Merula bent down and grabbed the book, quickly placing it in her own bag. She took a sigh of relief, and quickly walked away.
“Now what?” she whispered, before seeing Ismelda.
“This party's boring. I’m heading back to the common room.” she declared.
“Good idea.” Merula said, walking with her.
“Don’t worry, she can’t see me.” Matthew reassured her, “Now all we need to do is heat up the book and we can see the information.”
Merula nodded as they headed away from the party, but they were stopped on their way back by Edwin.
“Hey, wh-where you going?” he asked, his usual cocky demeanour in full swing.
“We’re leaving.” Merula declared, “This party is boring, and you shouldn’t have invited us.”
Edwin stared at her for a moment. “Is that so.” he said, not even trying to make it a question.
“Yeah...I’m leaving now...bye.” she said, heading off. Ismelda looked at her, then at Edwin.
“Wow, she really doesn’t like you.” she said, “What’d you do to her?”
“I would worry more about what I’m going to do.” Edwin growled.
“Merula...” Matthew began, “Get to my broom. It’s right by the lake.” When she looked at the comb, confused, Matthew just shouted “GO!” and that got her moving.
She sprinted back down the hill, where she saw the Cleansweep resting by a tree. She grabbed a hold of it and saw Edwin racing after her.
“Just wait a minute!” he yelled, as Merula kicked off the ground. Matthew quickly put the guitar onto his back as the ground fell beneath them, and soon they were soaring over the grounds once again.
“Now how’d she know the broom was there?” Rowan asked aloud. “Matthew, do you-”
“Curse them!” Edwin bellowed, heading off after her, wand in hand. Ismelda hissed.
“Oh no you don’t...” she muttered, running after him. Bill stood nearby, very much concerned.
“Something’s going on here...” he deduced, before joining the chase. Of course, Merula and Matthew had the advantage of having a broomstick, which allowed them to get to the other side of the school in very little time. They ended up on the second floor, just above the Great Hall.
“Nobody uses these toilets.” Merula explained, “Myrtle’s always kicking up a fuss.”
They headed into the girl’s bathroom, which was oddly quiet.
“That’s strange.” said Merula, “I wonder where she’s gone.” Matthew appeared in a mirror near the sink.
“That was close.” he admitted, looking on as Merula pulled Ramifications out of her satchel. “Now all we need to do is heat it up and we’ll be set. Be careful though, we don’t want to set it on fire.”
“Right.” Merula said, placing the book on the ground. Matthew moved closer, appearing in a puddle of water. “Incendio Parvus!” A small flame appeared on the tip of Merula’s wand, which she moved down towards the paper. “Hey, it’s working!” she said excitedly.
“Great! Find the part about freeing people from mirrors!” Matthew implored, placing down the guitar.
“Okay, okay...” she said, flicking through the pages.
“Um...Merula...” Matthew began, “Sorry for dragging you into this.”
“Hmph...it’s...I mean, it wasn’t you, was it? It was that changeling who was the arse.”
“I know, but I made the deal with him...” he lamented.
“Yeah, I know, but...” she paused, looking over at Matthew’s puddle. “Oh come on. He gave you what you wanted, right?”
Matthew considered this. “Yeah. I guess he did.”
Merula smirked again. “What’d you even ask for?”
Matthew suddenly looked nervous. “I...um, I just wanted advice. We’d had that argument yesterday, and so I was just...I didn’t want to make things worse every time I saw you, or anyone else.”
Merula frowned. “Th-That’s it?!”
“Yeah...that’s it.”
She looked at him through the water, before bursting into laughter. “What?” he asked, more confused than ever.
“Sorry, it’s just...” she paused to wipe her hair out of her face, “It’s weird how little you trust yourself. I mean, you make friends all the time. I’m the one who can’t make friends and can’t go to Hogsmeade.”
Matthew frowned at her. “You don’t have to talk about-”
“It’s alright.” she reassured him. “I-I just...it’s my aunt. She says I’m not doing well enough in Defence against the Dark Arts.”
“But that’s not fair, the teachers are total tw-”
“I know that.” said Merula, “But my aunt thinks that I need to revise more...and she’s my legal guardian...so...”
“Merula, I’m sorry. You know...if you wanted to, I could give you a hand with...you know, studying and stuff.”
“Is that so?” she said, flicking through the pages with her other hand. “I don’t know...we’re mortal enemies. I don’t know how I’d feel about- Ah ha!” she exclaimed suddenly, “Freeing those trapped in the Reflected Realm! Bingo!”
Matthew craned his neck to see, but to no avail. Merula seemed to notice. “Oh, right, sorry. If a wizard or witch has been trapped within the Reflected Realm, they must be freed by breaking the contract forged between them and a changeling. To do this, one must return to the mirror of entry, destroy the surface they made the deal with and recite the phrase “Contractus est inanis. Corpus meum.” From there, the changeling will return to the Reflected Realm once it touches any reflective surface.”
“Brilliant!” said Matthew, “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
Merula extinguished the flame. “Okay, okay! You remember the phrase, right?”
“Course. Contractus est inanis. Corpus meum.”
“Good. Where’d you make the deal?” she asked, packing the book away.
“The boy’s toilets. Sixth floor.” This caused Merula’s face to scrunch up.
“Look, it won’t be for long. Once I get to the mirror, we can leave right away and find Edwin.” he explained.
“...Fine. I’m gonna get you for this one day, Luther...”
“I hope you get the chance, Merula...I really do...”
A minute or two later, Merula had made her way to the sixth floor, and was standing right outside the boy’s toilets.
“C-Can’t I just wait outside?” she asked. Matthew nodded, before heading inside on his own, the guitar still on his back. He instantly came back out.
“I’m afraid you can’t, Merula.” he said nervously. Merula groaned, before poking her head into the room. Standing in the U-bend, in front of a large magical field, was the body of Matthew Luther, and the vile grin of Edwin.
“We meet again. I’m so glad I don’t have to hide from you anymore.” he said. Matthew sneaked into view on one of the nearby mirrors, glaring at the sphere.
“Listen to me, Edwin. I am the Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts,” Merula announced, “,and unless you vacate my mortal enemy’s body this instant, I will rain hell upon you!”
Edwin stared for a moment, before bursting into maniacal laughter. “Ooh, that’s a good one! I see why Matthew likes you!”
“I’m getting to that mirror, Edwin,” declared Matthew, “And you won’t stop me.”
Edwin pointed Matthew’s wand at Merula. “I somehow doubt that. I haven’t had a wand of my own in so long, I-”
“You still don't!” Matthew butted in.
“Silence!” Edwin yelled, sending Charm after Charm at the various mirrors. Merula watched as Matthew tried to mouth his words, before opting for a simple hand gesture. Merula pointed her own wand at Edwin.
“Sorry, I don’t take orders from you.” she sneered. “Flipendo!”
A burst of magic shot out of her wand at Edwin, who quickly moved out of the way, before yelling “Incendio!”, causing fire to leap towards Merula. She moved quickly out of the way, before pointing her wand back at Edwin, but he was faster. “Petrificus Totalus!” he shouted, sending a wave of paralysis at Merula, who felt herself fall to the ground. Matthew leapt towards the field of magic. He stepped through it, ending up on the other side with relative ease. Oh, the joys of the Reflected Realm, he thought to himself before reaching the mirror. Now he had to destroy it. He loosened his silver bracelet until it became a sort of fisticuff around his hand, and pulled back his arm.
“No!” roared Edwin, pointing Matthew’s own wand at him. “CRU-”
“Expelliarmus!”
Matthew’s wand flew out of Edwin’s hand over to the other side. Into the room came Rowan, Bill and Ismelda. But it wasn’t them that fired that disarming spell. It was Merula.
“It’s funny.” she said, “I never bought into that ‘wand chooses the wizard’ crap. But I think it well and truly has this time...changeling. Now, Luther!” she yelled, as the three newcomers looked around confused. Matthew took the bracelet and bashed it into the mirror. There wasn’t a scratch on the silver, but the mirror cracked into a thousand pieces.
“Contractus est inanis. Corpus meum!” he recited, as the several shards of the mirror began to glow. Blue ropes appeared between Matthew and Edwin, which snapped in two with a loud twang. Rowan pointed at the mirror.
“Matt! What are you doing in a mirror? With a guitar?” they asked, flabbergasted.
Edwin glared daggers at his double. “Matt...my guy Matt...” he snarled, wiping the hair out of his face. “If you think getting that mirror broken was difficult, you’ll have one hell of a time putting me back-”
“Glacius Maledictus!” Matthew yelled, having picked up his wand. His bracelet glowing, ice began to coat the floor of the toilets. Perfect Ice.
Edwin looked down at his blue reflection. Matthew looked back up at him.
“...It’s a fair cop.” Edwin admitted. He looked at Merula. “A very fair cop...You know what Matt, I’ve changed my mind about you. You’re no coward. You just needed a push is all. And here I am to give it to you.” he stepped forward to Merula, grinning. “It’s been fun. You’ll thank me later.” Edwin leaned forward. There was a great flash of light, and Matthew was pulled up from the ice and into the motion. When he opened his eyes, his lips were on Merula’s. Rowan audibly gasped. Ismelda actually stopped picking her nails. Bill took a deep breath, knowing what was about to come next.
“Uuurgh!” They both said, disconnecting instantly, Matthew bringing a hand from behind Merula and her placing her feet firmly back on the ground. They both, however, couldn’t hide their very red faces.
“Oh, that bastard!” Matthew groaned, wiping his mouth.
“Yuck, yuck, yuck!” said Merula, spitting onto the ground. Suddenly, they heard his laugh. Rowan pointed downwards. Inside the glass was a boy in denim and a flannel shirt, scowling.
“I was just the first of the monsters of the mirrors.” he announced, “There’ll be more, trust me! And when they get out, they’ll-” “Incendio.”
There was a horrifying screech as the ice suddenly melted, until the bathroom floor was covered in water. Then there was silence. Ismelda smiled, before placing her wand back into her pocket. “That’s for messing with my friends.” she droned, before turning to Matthew. She looked at him for a moment, before slapping him across the face. “And that’s for kissing Merula.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose!” Matthew said, rubbing his cheek, which was red for a completely different reason to Ismelda. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw two figures appear in the mirror for a moment, nod, then vanish.
“Ok, now can someone please explain what’s going on?” Bill asked.
“I can try.” said Matthew, stretching his jaw. Merula was still a bright pink, and was still wiping her mouth. “Was I really that bad?” he snickered.
“It was...just a surprise, Luther.” Merula said stiffly. “Don’t worry. I won’t slap you. Just don’t get any ideas.”
Rowan looked at them all, aghast. “Sorry, but are we overlooking the fact that Ismelda just killed a man?!”
***
“So, in summary...” said Dumbledore, sitting at his desk, “It’s been quite an eventful day or two for you, hasn’t it?”
Matthew nodded rapidly. They were all now in the Headmaster’s Office, along with Professors Snape, McGonagall and Flitwick.
“I am just glad that you are okay, Matthew.” squeaked the smallest wizard. “Changelings are very dangerous forces of nature.”
“I would like to remind Mr Luther,” sneered Snape, “That the next time he sees something unusual in the mirror, he is to come straight to a Head of House...and that goes for all of you, too.”
The students all nodded. “Well, if that’s everything,” said McGonagall, “I do believe you will all need sleep after a long day like this.”
“Minerva is correct.” said Dumbledore, “Though, if you have any questions or concerns...”
“Actually...” said Merula, “There’s one thing I still don’t understand. Why was I the only person who could see Matthew in the Reflected Realm?”
Dumbledore smiled. “Now that is a very interesting stroke of luck. You see, a very powerful Artifact of Protection can sometimes lend its protection to others around them. It is likely that Matthew’s bracelet,” he explained, leaning towards the boy, “Has seen your connection as the closest, and has decided to protect both of you. And perhaps, more. I imagine Mr Khanna was unable to find Edwin while he was in Matthew’s body for a reason.”
“So...what does that mean?” asked Merula
“It means you, Matthew, are Merula’s Artifactidal Guardian.” he declared. Matthew looked down at his bracelet. Was that why he gave it to him?
“Hang on...how much of a guardian?”
Dumbledore’s eye twinkled knowingly. “Enough of one, Matthew.” he said.
Merula looked at him, turning a little pink still. “What does- What do you-” But Matthew understood. He pulled out the sheet that the riddle was written on, as well as his pen, and began to scribble on the back of the parchment. Then, he gave it to Merula. She read it. Her jaw dropped.
Dear Professor Dumbledore,
I Matthew Luther, Artifactidal Guardian of Merula Snyde, hereby give her permission to visit Hogsmeade.
Merula passed the letter to Dumbledore in silence, who read it and nodded. “Very well. Now, off to bed, chop chop.”
As they all walked down the stairs, Matthew felt Merula grab his shoulder.
“Thi-” she stammered, “Th-Thank you, Matthew. I don’t… You know, I-”
“Don’t worry about it, please.” Matthew said, smiling. “This changes nothing. You and I can still be mortal enemies.”
Merula grinned. “Gotcha.” she said, smiling. “Also...um...that was my first kiss.”
Matthew nodded. “Oh. Um...mine too.” He could see something flicker over her expression after that.
“Oh...well, I’m going to say it was with you, because if I don’t it would have been with Edwin, which is even worse.”
“Yeah, I understand.” Matthew said, a smile forcing its way onto his red face. “Well...there’s another Hogsmeade trip tomorrow...see you then...”
“Y-Yeah...see you then.” Merula said, before marching off. It took only a few days for them to get back to their usual bickering selves, but people noticed that for some reason they never argued and never insulted each other when they were in Hogsmeade. The few who knew why kept that secret close to their chests.

Needy - (n.m.)
Storyline: The reader is officially over Nick being too busy for her lately, so she decides to take matters into her own hands.
Author’s Note: Okay so I got too carried away with this one. Not sure what got into me but I was obviously feeling some type of way. Nick just does it to me what can I say.
Warning: DEFINITE SMUT WARNING
Word count: 2k
It had been the most annoying past few weeks of you and Nick’s relationship. He was constantly busy with meetings, rehearsals, and studio sessions that it left little to no time for you. And after many cancelled plans and rescheduled alone time together, you were starting to become restless and in desperate need of his attention.
You woke up on the living room couch early in the morning after attempting to stay awake until Nick got home from the studio the night before. You had a huge blanket laid across you that you didn’t remember being there before. Meaning Nick had come in late and saw you snuggled up and proceeded to gently wrap you up in the blanket without disturbing you.
You got up from the tiny couch and wrapped the blanket tightly around yourself and set out to find him somewhere in your shared apartment. You were happy to find him in the bedroom, but were immediately met with disappointment once you saw him on the phone. He locked eyes with you as you stood in the doorway and a grin instantly crossed his face.
“Morning angel” Nick whispered, covering the phone mic as he walked toward you. “I’m on a conference call with the guys and some people from the management team but I won’t be long” he continued as he placed a kiss on your forehead. But you knew that phrase all too well. Whenever Nick said something “won’t be long”, it always ended up being longer than anticipated and running up until the time he had to do the next thing planned for the day. Hence, the reason you two had no time together lately.
“You always say that Nick but I need to be with you now” you said whining as you pouted your lips. But Nick continued his conversation as he walked to sit on the bed and proceeded to mouth a simple “just a minute” to you. You had officially had it. Being over constantly getting ignored by your boyfriend, you decided to take matters into your own hands. If he wasn’t going to give you the attention, then you’d just have to demand it yourself.
You dropped the blanket to the floor revealing your red laced thong covered by your oversized t-shirt. You crawled on the bed behind Nick who was sitting at the edge, and began prepping kisses all along his neck. He was mid sentence with his phone conversation when his voice came to halt at the feeling of your lips on his skin.
“Nick, you still there?” you heard Brandon say on the phone. “Yeah yeah I’m here just a quick sec” Nick said proceeding to cover the phone mic.
“Baby, I just said I won’t be long. Give me a second” Nick said in a stern tone. Something about the assertiveness in his voice only made you more turned on and want to continue pushing the limit.
Nick went on with the conversation, discussing future dates and venues for an upcoming concert. You continued your scandalous ways and began moving your hands down Nick’s chest and slowly to his boxers, where you began rubbing him from outside. You could feel he was already hard. You thought maybe it was from the sight of you in his favorite underwear of yours or maybe from the many marks you left on his neck. Either way, you continued moving your hand over his member, palming him ever so slightly.
“Y-yeah the ten-tenth of next month” Nick said stuttering over a couple of words. You took that as a sign that your plan was working and decided to go even further. You got off the bed, went over in between Nick’s legs, and immediately got on your knees. Before Nick could even say anything, you slid his boxers down and took him into your hand. A low groan came out of Nick’s mouth as he looked at you from above. His eyes were filled with both anger and lust. He covered the mic again as he grabbed your wrist and stopped your motions at once.
“You may enjoy teasing me now, but you’re going to regret it if you continue later” Nick said as he let go of your dainty wrist.
“Hm I don’t know Nick... maybe I wanna regret it later” you said as you slowly took the tip of him into your mouth. Nick clenched his jaw, and tried to carry on the conversation. But as you continued to take more and more of him in your mouth, the feeling was too good and he couldn’t control it anymore. He unintentionally let a low “fuck” escape from his mouth.
“You alright over there Nick?” Edwin questioned at the profanity coming from Nick’s line. “Yeah, just dropped something that’s all... just continue” Nick said trying to move the conversation forward. You giggled a little at the excuse Nick had told the boys, causing more sensation to be released onto him.
At this point, he was getting close. Out of breath and extremely in need of release, he was struggling to keep his noises in. But that didn’t stop you. You loved seeing him this way. Helpless and in need of release while still trying to carry on a conversation. Which is why it took you completely by surprise when Nick took himself out of your mouth and looked deep into your eyes.
“Strip. Now.” He said in a strict but silent tone to avoid anyone hearing. His voice was too sexy that you didn’t even care to question why he stopped you or what was to come next. All you wanted to do was listen to him. So you slid your shirt over your body exposing your bare chest and slowly slid the lace down your legs as Nick’s eyes watched your every move, never leaving you.
“Perfect... absolutely perfect” Nick said loud and clear. You couldn’t tell if he was referring to something said on his conference call or to your completely stripped body standing in front of him, but it made you a little more wet both ways. He signaled you towards him with his two fingers and began touching your body. He left kisses all over, causing you to tilt your head back in pleasure. He continued to place his free hand on your hip, as he guided you to sit down to where you were straddling his thigh. Nick held the phone as far away from his ear as possible as he began to whisper into yours.
“Make yourself cum on my thigh baby. I wanna see you struggle. And don’t dare let a single one of those pretty moans escape your mouth. Understood?” Nick said strictly. You gave a quick nod, in desperate need of wanting to feel some type of pleasure on your now sensitive area. Nick moved the phone back to his ear as he began helping you rock your hips.
“Sorry yes I’m still here, just had to quickly take care of something” Nick said continuing his conversation. Something about possibly getting caught by everyone on the phone made you feel more rebellious and turned on, causing you to continue moving faster. The feeling started to take you over, sending pleasure over your whole body as Nick’s eyes, for the second time that morning, watched your every move, never leaving you.
You could tell you were losing control, forgetting Nick was still on the phone and beginning to let out soft moans. Nick’s hand quickly began covering your mouth as he whispered into your ear.
“What did I say princess? Not a word” Nick said looking deep into your lustful eyes. He could sense you were close and weren’t gonna be able to hold it for much longer. “Does my baby want to cum for me? Huh?” Nick said as you eagerly nodded your head, hoping he’d give you permission to do so. But instead he picked you up, and quickly set your back down onto the bed.
“Hey I’m gonna have to put you guys on hold for a second. Something needs my attention is that cool?” Nick said on the phone. “Yeah man go ahead” Brandon said not knowing you were the something that was awaiting Nick’s attention.
Nick quickly put the phone on mute and set it on the nightstand. He got back on the bed to a super whiny you, in need of his touch.
“Nick please baby” you moaned trying to avoid touching yourself. You knew it would only cause Nick to leave you just like this. “Please what?” Nick said hovering over you. “I need to feel you inside of me baby please fuck me” you said being a complete mess under him.
“I don’t know if you deserve it princess after disobeying me earlier” Nick said teasing your entrance with his tip only causing you to go insane.
“I promise I’ll be good for you from now on just please Nick I can’t take it” you said. Nick decided you’d had enough suffering and continued to slowly inch himself into you. Your eyes rolled to the back of your head as you wrapped both hands around his neck, clawing at his back. “f-fuck” is all you could say. Even though you and Nick had done this plenty of times before, you could never get use to how big he was.
“You like that baby? Huh?” Nick said picking up the pace. “I-I love it... f-fuck me” you moaned completely losing feeling in your legs.
“Gladly” Nick said continuing to go faster and faster. Your screams and the sound of your bodies coming together were completely filling the room. At a time like this, you were definitely grateful for that mute button.
“Fuck I wish you could see how pretty you look falling apart underneath me baby...you’re a mess” Nick said as his strokes became less in sync, hinting he was close. “Tell me who it’s all for? Who that sweet pussy belongs to princess?” Nick continued.
“You baby it’s all for you... p-please can I cum?” you begged not being able to hold it in anymore.
“Not yet baby, hold it in for me understood?” Nick said awaiting your response. But you were in too much pleasure to even form words at this point, causing Nick to give you a slap on the thigh. “Understood?” Nick repeated himself.
“Y-yes daddy” you managed to say with the little energy you had left.
Hearing you call him this only made him go deeper than ever before. It was unexplainable at this point. How good Nick had you feeling. And the fact that there were people one button away from hearing it at all sent you over the edge.
“Fuck baby I’m gonna cum PLEASE” you screamed almost at your climax.
“Look at me and let go baby... open those pretty eyes for me... I wanna see your face when you cum on me” Nick said allowing you release all over him. Your screams continued to fill the room as your legs wrapped tightly around Nick’s waist, bringing him to his climax as well. “Just like that baby... fuck you’re making me cum for you” Nick said as he released.
You were completely out of breath as Nick got off the bed and grabbed a warm towel from the bathroom, gently wiping your sensitive area before picking up the phone.
“Yeah yeah sorry for the wait guys, but you’ll have to figure the rest out without me. I need to give this my attention for a whole lot longer” Nick said looking over at you and smiling.
He quickly hung up the phone before anyone could respond and climbed into bed with you. “You okay baby?” Nick asked like he usually does, always wanting you to be okay after you guys did anything. Though he was wild during sex, he was still a total sweetheart. Always making his girls wellbeing his number one priority. Always.
“Trust me, I’m much better now” you said snuggling into his chest. You spent the rest of the morning in his arms, finally having the alone time you’d been hopelessly craving.

Birthday present for @bucky-babe who wanted some Ironhusbands so here we have a college AU (and a surprise AU very fun) also latinx Tony Stark. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Bucky!

warnings: some hints to Howard Stark’s A+ parenting
College. A terrifying time in any young person’s life, but even more terrifying if that young person looked like they were fifteen years old. Tony Stark, genius son of Howard Stark, at seventeen years of age is beginning his academic career at university, and the poor boy is fucking terrified. His father is too busy at some business meeting to help his only child move in, but his mamá is there with him, along with Jarvis to help him carry all his boxes in. Tony can feel his arms start to shake, and he can try to kid himself it’s from the weight of the box he holds in his arms, but deep down he knows it’s because he is about to shit his pants from fear. Sure, he’d gone to boarding school before, but this is different. Here, he is the youngest, a baby, and no one is gonna want to befriend a baby.
A gentle hand passes over his head, caressing his head of curls. “Mi vida,” his mamá whispers to him as they wait for Jarvis to shut the trunk. “Mi amor, calm down. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”
Tony lets out a cough, trying to calm his racing heart. Yeah, nothing to be afraid of, except, you know, bullies and shit. He’s seen movies. He knows what college frat bros are capable of. He just wants to be challenged… and also maybe he wants to get away from his bastard of a father, but that’s besides the point.
“You are going to do great things here, mi amor. I can feel it.”
He can feel a smile tug at his lips. “Gracias, mamá.”
It flows off his tongue like a river, his mamá’s native language that Howard refuses to allow under his roof. Maria wraps an arm around her son and runs her fingers through his thick brunette curls. She’s going to miss him as she always does when Howard sends her boy away. She’s left with an empty house all to herself; her husband is almost never home, not that she minds, but she misses when she could still hear her Tony’s laughter fill the cold halls.
“You’ll call me,” she says more than asks. He always calls his mamá.
“Claro. Who else are you going to complain to about the women in your book club?”
“Ay, why your father insisted I join those ridiculous women is beyond me.” Maria rolls her eyes. “The books they choose are boring, and all they talk about are their yachts or houses in the Hamptons.”
“You don’t want to talk about that?”
A laugh escapes her. Howard may paint her as some sort of Spanish nobility for the press, but that wasn’t her. She was Mexican born, Los Angeles raised, and she wasn’t used to the life Howard led when they first married. She still wasn’t used to all the bragging and pettiness that came with being married to a Stark. The only good thing to come from her marriage is her son. And her friendship with the Jarvis couple.
“Vamos,” she calls when the three of them manage to grab everything, “we have a dorm to see.”
Tony, he isn’t so sure what to expect from a college dorm, but whatever it had been, it definitely does not match up with what he sees when he opens the door. Whoever his roommate is, well… he’s a total slob. Tony can feel the crease form between his eyebrows as he takes in the set of footprints on their carpet. What asshole tracks dirty footprints on a new carpet?
“Oh, hi!” a warm voice greets from inside. “You must be James’s roommate!”
He’s being swept up in a tight hug. It’s warm, maybe even warmer than the hugs his mamá gives. He’s released, and he sees who had embraced him. She’s beautiful, that’s for sure, and her face is so kind, all laugh lines and dimples. She’s big, bigger than tiny Tony, and he loves it. She’s like some sort of goddess, completely different from mamá, and yet exactly the same. The love they carry in their souls just radiates from them.
“James!” the goddess yells into the bathroom. “James Rhodes, you get out here and meet your roommate!”
“Okay, Ma, there’s no need to yell. I’m only five feet away, you know.”
And there he is. An angel right before his eyes. Tall, dark, handsome--no, gorgeous. Wow, I am so gay, goes through Tony’s mind before he realizes, this is my roommate. You don’t hook up with your roommate, even if he is the most beautiful being Tony has ever seen in his entire fucking life.
“Hi,” Tony squeaks, his voice cracking in a way that just makes him want to crawl in a hole and live out the rest of his days like some hermit, “I’m Tony.”
“James,” the angel--his roommate--says, and his warm ass hand fucking engulfs Tony’s tiny one, and Tony wants to melt into the carpet right there. “It’s nice to meet you, Tony.”
The goddess, who Tony’s infers is James’s mother, holds out her hand to Maria and gives her a warm smile. “Roberta Rhodes.”
“Maria, pleasure to meet you.”
“This your husband?”
“Oh, no,” Jarvis scrambles to put down his boxes and shake Mrs. Rhodes’s hand. “Edwin Jarvis, I’m a, uh, family friend. Here to help him move in.”
“Your husband working? That’s understandable, Terrence is back home looking after our daughter while I get to help James get settled in.” Mrs. Rhodes lowers her voice and stage-whispers, “He was nervous to meet his roommate.”
“Ma!”
“But I don’t think there’s any need to be nervous. You seem like a good boy, Tony.”
“I, uh… I am?” He looks to his mamá for some guidance.
“James has nothing to worry about with Tony other than late nights and some skipped meals. Recuerde comer, mi vida,” Maria tells her son. “Hopefully they can look after each other while they’re here.”
They start unpacking, and Tony can’t get over the fact that his super hot roommate is the kind of guy to 1) wear shoes inside and 2) wear dirty shoes inside. Their carpet is absolutely covered in footprints, and while Tony isn’t a neat freak, it does kinda piss him off. But he can’t just call him out in front of everyone, can he? He’s actually a bit surprised Jarvis hasn’t said anything about it. But whatever, right? It’s the first day, and they’ve got a lot of stuff to move in, so it makes sense James would keep his shoes on, and Tony can always clean it up later… hopefully.
Although Tony hates to admit it, he cries when mamá and Jarvis has to go. He’s a baby, practically, and he’s being left on his own to take care of himself. He can’t do that! He has problems with sleeping and eating and just, well, taking general care of himself!
“You are going to be just fine,” Maria tells him as she cradles his baby face in her hands. “You are so talented, Tony, and I am so proud of you. So proud.”
Tony sniffles and looks up at her with glossy brown eyes. “Are you sure?”
“Of course, mi amor, I will always be proud of you.” She presses a kiss to his forehead and closes her eyes. “Te quiero, Tony.”
“Te quiero, mamá.”
Jarvis ruffles his hair and promises to write before he and Maria get in the car and drive off. Leaving him alone on the curb, fighting tears. He’ll be fine. Stark men don’t cry.
Tony and James fall into an easy sort of friendship, and Tony starts to feel more comfortable at school. Rhodey, what James has lovingly been renamed, still tracks in those goddamn footprints, but Tony can’t bring himself to call him out on it. Whenever he feels frustration creep up inside of him, he remembers what always happens when he tries to make his father listen to him, and suddenly he’s unable to say anything to Rhodey about his messy habits. So he keeps his mouth shut and his head down whenever he wants to say something. He can handle this.
His friends think he’s a fucking idiot for not just bringing it up. Well, they think he’s an idiot for a lot of other reasons, but they especially get onto him for this. Somehow, around a week into the semester, he managed to collect three mom friends: Carol, Pepper, and Natasha. He and Carol share a class together, but that’s not how she adopted him. No, it was outside of class, on the quad, when she and the other two girls were studying and talking shit, when suddenly this small boy was tripping over his shoelaces and his books were flying everywhere. They saw tiny Tony and adopted him on the spot, and now they made sure he actually ate, got more than two hours of sleep a week, and communicated with his freakishly hot roommate.
“Tones, if the guy keeps tracking in dirt, fucking tell him,” Natasha sighs as they’re lounging on Tony’s bed one Friday night. “It’s obviously bothering you enough keep bitching to us about it.”
“But what if he gets mad at me?”
“He’s the one being slob,” Pepper points out.
“If he gives you a hard time about it,” Carol says, “we’ll kick his ass. Now hold still.”
Carol had bought some new nail polish and wanted to try it out on Tony, claiming the red and gold would go perfect with his dark skin. It’ll totally pop, Tones, just trust me, she had said when she’d pulled out the bottles. So now he’s lounging between Natasha’s legs, her fingers lightly scratching against his scalp while Carol paints his nails and Pepper flips through a magazine.
“Where is your Adonis anyways?” Pepper asks. “He got plans?”
“I think he said he had a Smash Bros tournament with uh… Sam? You guys know Sam Wilson?”
“Yeah, he’s friends with Steve Rogers and that other guy with the man bun,” Carol answers. “Wait, Nat, didn’t you hook up with man bun?”
“Like, once. Okay, so it was twice, but what can I say? He’s got nice arms.”
“Thirsty.”
“Shut up, Pepper, so are you.”
“Wh-- no I am not, I am completely, 100% focused on classes, thank you very much! You have absolutely nothing on--”
The door swing open, and Rhodey walks in looking a bit winded. He waves to the girls and Tony before disappearing into the bathroom.
“...If he left a Smash Bros tournament, he isn’t worth it, Tones,” Carol tells him. “A quitter never makes an attractive partner, let me just tell you that right now.
“Hey!” Rhodey comes back in and smiles. “Sorry for interrupting your party, but I remembered Sam let me borrow one of his hoodies last week, and if I don’t return it tonight, he’s never gonna let me live it down.”
“Oh, was it the one hanging in the shower?” Tony realizes.
“That’s the one! I got salsa on it and had to scrub it out.” He grins at Tony, and the younger boy swears his heart skipped like five beats. “Anyways, I’ll be back in a few hours. Want me to bring you back some pizza, Tones?”
“That would be amazing, platypus, thank you!”
“Anything for my tiny Tony.”
The girls wait until he’s gone before turning back to their friend with wide eyes. He just looks back at them innocently.
“What?”
“What do you mean ‘what’?” Pepper says. “You just called him platypus, and he just called you his tiny Tony!”
“Yeah, we have nicknames for each other, so what?”
“Tony, it was the way he said it,” Natasha sighs. “We already know you’re in love with him--”
“I am not!”
“But, Tony, he sounded pretty fond of you.”
“People can be fond platonically! You are fond of me! And for your information, I am not in love with him.” He stands up, ignoring the annoyed shout Carol gives him when the nail polish gets smudged, and puts his hands on his hips. “I am not in love with someone who is completely incapable of taking off his dirty ass shoes before walking on the carpet! I mean, just look at how messy it is!”
The girls look down at the floor and are quiet for a few moments. Tony waits as they continue to stare at the floor and them give him a worried look.
“What?” he asks.
“Tony… there are no footprints on the carpet,” Pepper tells him.
“What the hell are you talking about? Are you blind?” He gestures to the carpet where he can clearly see a trail of footprints leading to and from the bathroom. “They’re right here!”
“Oh my god, you cannot be this stupid,” Carol laughs. “Are you being serious right now?”
“Yes!”
“Tones, if we can’t see the footprints you can clearly see,” Natasha says, “then have you considered he’s your--”
“If you’re gonna say soulmate, I’m just going to stop you right there,” Tony interrupts her. “There is no way someone like me could ever have a soulmate, let alone one like Rhodey.”
“And why do you say that?”
“Because… well… because I’m me. Tony Stark, the absolute fuck up! I mean, my own father can’t even stand to be in the same room as me for more than five minutes without telling me what a terrible son I am! Why should I be soulmates with someone as wonderful as James Rhodes?”
“There’s a lot to unpack here, but--”
“ANTHONY EDWARD STARK, YOU GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS THIS INSTANT! HE IS YOUR SOULMATE OKAY?” Pepper suddenly yells, causing the others to stare at her with wide eyes. “You can see his footprints, we can. There is literally no other explanation for this!”
“Pepper,” Carol hisses. She can’t just yell at Tony and expect everything to--
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Oh, wow, did not actually expect that to work.”
“Well… you guys are like my moms, so. I listen to you.”
“He listens to you, well that’s just great,” Carol grumbles. “He doesn’t listen to me.”
“That’s because you’re just as reckless and stupid as him, Danvers,” Pepper says back. “Now, Tony, I want you to actually talk to James about this, okay? You know now that he isn’t just some asshole who likes to track dirt into the dorm; he’s your soulmate.”
“But I mean, do we really--”
“Don’t make me pull the full name card again, Tony, because you know I will.”
“...Fine. I will talk to him about this. Now, Carol, can you please fix my nails? I think I fucked them up.
Rhodey sneaks back into the dorm after midnight, trying hard to be quiet in case Tony went to bed. Of course, the little insomniac did not go to bed, and is instead sitting at his desk waiting for his roommate/soulmate. When he hears the door click shut, he turns on his desk lamp and swivels his chair, causing Rhodey to let out a shriek.
“Oh, fuck! It’s just you, Tones. You scared the shit out of me, man.” He can see Tony chewing the inside of his cheek as if trying to find the right words to say. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Wrong? Nothing’s wrong, or at least I don’t think so, I just, uh. Fuck. Okay so basically… I think you’re really hot, and I have since we first met, and, like, that’s really weird because we’re roommates and I most definitely should not be thinking that, and then I noticed you kept tracking fucking dirt onto our carpet, but I didn’t want to say anything in case you got mad, because I don’t like it when people yell at me, probably because of like childhood trauma or some shit, I dunno, but then today Carol, Pepper, and Nat realized that you weren’t tracking dirt into the dorm, I just saw your footprints, which, you know, means we’re soulmates.”
“Wait… what?”
Oh, god, Rhodey didn’t know. “Oh, well, we’re--well I think we’re soulmates. Because I can see your footprints when no one else can.”
“Yeah, no I knew that.”
“You knew?”
“Uh, it’s pretty obvious when I can see your footprints, Tony, even when you’re not wearing shoes.”
“Well… why didn’t you say anything?” Tony could feel his chest start to get tight and his breathing pick up. “Oh, god, you don’t want me, do you? That’s why you didn’t say anything! Because, because you know I’d be a terrible soulmate, and you don’t want that, and you deserve someone way better, someone like Sam Wilson, because he’s so cool, oh god, who wouldn’t want to be soulmates with Sam Wilson, he’s like--”
Tony stops talking when Rhodey cradles his face in his warm ass hands, his entire brain going blank.
“Whoa, there, calm down, okay? I didn’t say anything because I thought you knew, Tony.” Rhodey lets out a laugh and shakes his head. “Hell, I thought we’ve been dating for like a month now!”
“...what.”
“Yeah, you started calling me Rhodey and platypus and honeybear, and we’ve been cuddling and holding hands, so I thought you knew! Oh, god, this is so embarrassing! I totally thought we’ve been dating!”
“Well, I… I mean, we could, uh, well, if you wanted to, I wouldn’t object to us, like, actually dating. As in we both know we’re dating.”
“Oh you wouldn’t, would you?” Rhodey asks with a smile. “Well, would you object if I were to kiss you right now?”
Oh my god, he wants to kiss me!
“I mean, if you really wanted to.”
“Oh, shut up, Tones.”
“Why don’t you make m--”
Rhodey leans down to kiss him before Tony can finish his snarky comment, and Tony does not mind one bit. Because Tony has never felt anything as fucking perfect as kissing Rhodey. His whole body grows warm as Rhodey wraps his arms around him, and Tony practically melts against him when he feels Rhodey’s fingers gently tug on his curls. He’s kissing his soulmate, and his soulmate is fucking James Rhodes, his platypus, his honeybear, his Rhodey.

Edwin/dad!Ed one-shot: Girl Issues
Summary: Ed’s son Alan has been disappearing a lot from their house, and Ed tries to figure out why.
A/N: finally! This took like a million years. I hope you guys will still enjoy it :) Please let me know what you think!! (bing @automail-freak-and-alchemy-freak)
Edit: I forgot to say there might be a small “easter egg” hidden in the fic, about a movie some Edwin people have been talking about lately :’)
Words: 2450
Warnings: swearing
”Hey, Ed?” Winry addressed her husband who was cleaning the kitchen after the dinner. “Do you think Alan has been acting weirdly lately? He’s been doing… less mechanic work and gone out to town way more often…”
“He has?” Ed stopped putting the plates into the cupboard and turned to look at his wife, raising his eyebrows. “To me he has told that he’s simply taking some extra art lessons with Mr. Dawson because drawing blueprints has never been his strength.”
Winry crossed her arms over her chest and looked just as surprised as he did. “And to me he’s told he’s helping out some friends who have trouble with school… Something doesn’t add up.”
“Hmm. It’s not like him to hide things from us. I think I will call Mr. Dawson tonight and ask him if he’s really been at his house,” Ed decided. The conversation ended at that point because a loud crash could be heard from the living room, and Winry rushed to check what the twins had broken this time.
Only half an hour later, Ed, who was observing Emma’s alkahestry studies upstairs, heard the front door opening and closing. That let him know Alan had just left the building. He waited 10 more minutes, just in case Alan indeed went to the Dawsons, before dialing their phone number.
“Mr. Dawson? Hello! I’m calling you because my son seems to have been spending a lot of time there lately. Is he there right now?”
“No. And he hasn’t been here for the past two or three weeks, so I wouldn’t call that ‘a lot’,” a grumpy voice answered.
Ed narrowed his eyes at that piece of information, but he didn’t want to make Mr. Dawson too suspicious so he didn’t reveal the real reason of his call.
“Oh, OK. Well, thank you, anyway. And if he shows up, could you tell him to come home as soon as possible? Winry has a commission to finish and the twins are currently trying to kill me, so extra hands would certainly be useful.” The part about the twins was obviously a lie, as they were sitting surprisingly quietly in the living room listening to their father’s phone call, but the dramatic wording would probably get Alan home more easily. That is, if he ever got the message.
Winry glanced at Ed curiously when he finished the call.
“So? Did you find out anything?”
Ed shrugged. “Only that Alan hasn’t visited Mr. Dawson for several weeks. I thought he was enjoying his classes!”
“I thought so too,” Winry said, getting more and more confused.
“Did you talk to any of his friends?” Ed asked then.
“I just saw Jack, that boy from his class, down the street, and he said that if Alan had been helping someone, he certainly wasn’t among them. But you know, to me it sounded like he was hiding something from me.”
“Great,” Ed sighed. “So he’s been lying to both of us. What do we do about this?”
“I guess we should get him to talk. But how do we do it? He’s got your blood in him, you know.” Winry threw Ed a sly look that Ed had seen quite many times during their years of marriage.
“And what is that supposed to mean?” Ed pretended to be hurt by Winry’s implications.
“Just that you have never been very good at expressing yourself, honey.” Ed snorted, because Winry and he had never been ones for pet names. “But also, since he’s more like you than you probably realize, you should be able to figure out the best way to make him open up. Was there anything that managed to crack your shell open when you were a teenager?”
Ed leaned his jaw against his hand, seeming to consider Winry’s question. His face seemed to have gotten some extra color when he spoke.
“Well, after the Promised Day… There was this girl who had been my friend since forever… She had even built me an automail leg and arm, so I could function… I knew she was upset because I couldn’t tell her what was happening in my life, but after the Promised day, when I felt it was safe to tell her everything… it was easier than I thought. Why? Because she made me feel she cared.”
“Ed… that’s very sweet of you…,” Winry said, completely surprised by her husband’s words and blushing slightly. She let her hand linger on his shoulder for a moment before continuing: “Anyway, I guess that means you should show that you do care about his wellbeing. I mean, deep down he must know that already, but you know, sometimes it’s good to say it aloud. He’s in a difficult age, but I know he really respects you and values your opinions.”
“I hope so,” Ed grunted, not quite believing her.
Until that moment, the twins who had been listening the whole time hadn’t said anything, but suddenly the 4-year-old Henry blurted: “We heard brother talking with big sissy today! He told her to ‘dis… tract you’, whatever that means, while someone comes to get him with a motorbike!”
“Really?” Winry asked, her eyebrows raising probably higher than the twins had ever seen. “Those two are almost as bad as… oh, never mind,” she added quickly when she saw the twins staring at her intensely.
“So that’s why Emma was so eager to show me what she had learned with Mei… She’s usually not that enthusiastic about it,” Ed noted.
“Makes perfect sense. Hey, my little king and queen,*” Winry ruffled her kids’ hair, “you didn’t happen to hear where they were planning to go?”
“No, mum,” the twins said in unison. “But I bet Emma knows!”
“We’ll just have to ask her, then.”
“No, dad, I’m not gonna tell you where Alan is. One, because I don’t know it either since they change their meeting place regularly, and two, because it’s none of your business.”
Emma took a book from her bedside table and pretended to be interested in it instead of looking at her father’s stare. Even though it didn’t work quite as well against her as it once used to, she still felt slightly bad about hiding things from him. Alan was right, though, their parents were too curious for their own good.
“Fine, then. Can you at least tell me with whom he is?”
Emma was positive her father would use what he liked to call “Elric telepathy” on her if she didn’t talk, so she let a little huff from her mouth and said:
“He’s gonna murder me, but… you would find out eventually if they continue doing this. You’re not gonna like this, dad…”
“Emma, just tell me already.” Ed was starting to show signs of losing his patience. Even though he had calmed down after having his children, the old temper still raised its head when he was truly annoyed or frustrated.
“Remember how Mei’s niece from Xing came to visit her and Al a couple of months ago because she wanted to learn more about Amestris and alchemy?” Emma asked, trying to be nonchalant but failing at it.
“Yes, wasn’t she Ling’s daughter?” Ed asked, not understanding why Emma had started talking about her. “Didn’t she have all those guards behind her all the time because she’s the daughter of the Emperor?”
“You are right, she was… Well, what you probably don’t know is that she decided to stay here in Amestris. She’s been trying to keep a low profile because she doesn’t want the media to follow her.”
“OK, but what does this have to do with Alan? I don’t get… OH!” The pieces of the puzzle started finally clicking in Ed’s head, and Emma could see his face taking a more and more dark red shade as he processed the information. “Are you telling me… my son… is seeing… that bastard’s heir?!”
“I told you, you wouldn’t like it.” Emma shrugged. “I thought you and the Emperor were friends, though? Doesn’t he always send you presents on holidays and stuff?”
“Damn right he does,” Ed suddenly stopped caring that he was talking to his daughter, “but that’s only because I once had to pay for a hell of a lot of food for him. He owes me.”
“Whatever you say…” Emma rolled her eyes. “Listen, please don’t be too hard on Alan. From what I’ve seen, they genuinely enjoy each other’s company, and Zhi is a nice person.”
“Fine. But I’m still gonna talk with him.” Under his breath, he mumbled: “what if they decide to get married? What if my son becomes a prince? What if…”
“Um, dad, I don’t know what you had in your mind when you were 15 but I really don’t think they are thinking about marriage yet,” Emma said, amused by her father’s exaggerated reaction.
“When I was 15, I was trying to save our entire country from Homunculi so it was a bit different!”
“Based on your stories, you were only trying to save Uncle Al, dad, and everything else just happened by accident.”
“That… might be true, but you shouldn’t say it aloud, Emma,” Ed gave her a fake hurt look. “I still punched the god on his face!”
“Whatever, dad.” She took her book again and hid her face behind it. “Just… could you go now so I can continue reading in peace? I have a test tomorrow I need to study for.”
“Would you like me to help?”
“Just go, please!”
Ed and Winry had already put the twins into bed when Alan showed up at home again. Winry remained calm on the surface even though Ed knew she must have been sizzling underneath her cool cover. She had always hated it when he and Al had hidden something from her and now, they were talking about their 15-year-old son… Ed guessed that it was normal teenagers acted that way, but that didn’t mean he liked it. He suggested Winry go to check on the rest of the kids while he’d deal with Alan.
“Alan, can we talk?” Ed asked, barely able to contain his annoyance. Alan looked like he sensed his parents had found out something, the guilty expression Winry had seen on Ed so many times giving him away.
“Now? Dad, I’m hungry as fuck, haven’t eaten anything since lunch so can I at least grab a bite first?”
“What’s with that language, young man?” Ed asked disapprovingly.
“Please, like you weren’t the one who taught me that word…” That was the truth, but Ed wasn’t going to let him get away so easily.
“I’ve always told you to not do what I do, not the other way around…”
“Right… Well, since you clearly aren’t allowing me to eat, you might as well get into the topic.” Alan crossed his arms just like his mother had a little bit earlier. That amused Ed a bit.
“We can always talk about it in the kitchen,” Ed noted, a small smile spreading on his face.
“So… what was it you wanted to talk about?” Alan asked when he had a full bowl of stew in front of him.
Ed looked serious again. “I think you know. Don’t think we haven’t noticed your disappearances lately.”
“But I’ve been…”
“We know you haven’t been where you were supposed to be. I talked to Mr. Dawson today and he told me you haven’t visited him for several weeks.”
“I’ve…”
“Listen, the sooner you admit it, the better. Do you want me to know the real story or the vague one Emma told me?”
“She told you about Zhi? Damnit, I’m never telling her anything again.”
“I think you are missing the point there, son.”
“Fine,” Alan finally admitted, as he was lapping the stew into his mouth. “Yes, I’ve been hanging out with Mei’s niece… who also happens to be the Xingese Emperor’s daughter.”
“And…?”
“And what? What are you expecting me to tell you? That she’s pregnant? That we are about to announce our engagement any day now? That I’ve decided to move to Xing and leave my family behind forever?”
“None of those things are true, right?” Ed raised his eyebrow suspiciously.
“Of course they aren’t! I like her, and we have a lot of fun when we are hanging out… But I do realize that she’s a princess from another country. And she knows the realities too. She’s gonna have to go back eventually. And when she does, she is in the constant focus of her people. That is not something I’ve ever imagined going through, but why does it have to mean I’m not allowed to enjoy this moment? I knew you guys would react badly to this, that’s why I didn’t tell anything.”
“Now we finally got to the root of the problem,” Ed said. “I don’t mind you hanging out with this Zhi girl… the princess… whatever… But I am upset that you have been lying to us for a long while now.”
Alan couldn’t help but roll his eyes in annoyance. “Like you’ve never had any secrets yourself…”
“I admit that when I was your age, I hid a lot of things from your mother, because I wanted to keep her safe… But I regretted it a lot. I could see she hated it, and it made me upset too. After the Promised Day, I was so relieved because I could finally share everything. I think it made our relationship stronger too.” Ed sighed before adding: “I’m not good at these things, but what I’m trying to say is that please don’t hide things from us just because you think we might not like what you are wanting to tell us. We are here to support you.”
“Dad, thanks… And sorry… for not telling you.” “No problem, son. I’m just saying what I wish my father had once told me.”
“Oh…” Alan hadn’t heard his father talking about his father a lot. He had just always assumed they had had a bad relationship. And this proved he had been right.
“So, now that we have dealt with that…,” Ed spoke suddenly, “about this Zhi girl… how far have you gone with her? Do I need to have the talk with you?”
“Dad, stop being so embarrassing!” Alan screamed and jumped off his chair. “I’m not gonna talk about that with you! Uncle Al or even the Emperor of Xing would give better advice than you!”
“Hey, take that back!” Ed growled, but Alan had already run away from the kitchen, and he was left to fume with anger on his own.
*Names Erika and Henry both mean rulers and I have a headcanon that the twins indeed are the rulers of the Rockbell-Elric household even though they are all a pretty strong willed bunch.

Happy Valentine’s Day, here’s an Edwin fanfic I wrote!
Title: Notice
Pairing: Edwin
Rating: K+
Summary: During maintenance, Ed takes the time to study his mechanic. Realizations are made.
FF.net / AO3
Ed has the distinct feeling he will never like automail maintenance.
It's not like he hasn't tried. Those first few months of traveling he would look over the notes Winry wrote him and try to follow her instructions. And he was doing well…until he just stopped maintaining his automail.
Hey, he gets busy okay? Sometimes he just doesn't have time to fiddle with his stupid, metal appendages.
Besides, Winry does a better job anyway. With the way she's ranting and nagging at him and the shape of his arm, he bet she'd disprove of his attempts at maintaining the automail himself.
Which brings him back to the situation at hand, where he is currently lying down on the Rockbell's exam table while Winry fiddles, pokes, and prods his metal appendage.
"Honestly, you can be so unbelievable at times…" she mutters under her breath. She's been saying other stuff, but Ed tuned her out a long time ago. Once she starts fussing about the more intricate mechanics of automail, it all becomes gibberish to him.
Instead of listening to her scolding, he allows his eyes to wander around. He skims over the different tools, shrapnel, and parts that he's sure the Rockbells are using for future installments for other customers. In the corner are crutches and canes Granny would let clients use if they didn't have a temporary prosthetic leg to stand on like Ed does. Cobwebs decorate the corners of the ceiling (he should mention them to Winry when he gets the chance, she's always hated spiders infesting the workshop).
Honestly, there's so much junk down in the workshop, Ed doesn't know how Winry and Granny function down here. But he's no mechanic so maybe it's just something Ed doesn't understand…
"Are you even listening to me?" Winry snaps.
Ed turns and nods, "Yeah, yeah, I should be more careful. Your automail is precious and you worked hard on it so I should take better care of it. Yada, yada, yada, nag, nag, nag—OW! WINRY!"
She pulls back her wrench from his skull and huffs out a "Jerk," before going back to her work. Ed grumbles as she does so.
"Crazy gearhead." He rubs his poor skull and decides to keep his eyes from searching the room in case Winry wants to perform another lecture.
That just leaves him to let his eyes wander over his childhood friend instead…
Due to his position, his eyes first see her attire—particularly the tube top she decides to wear under her coveralls. Ed immediate averts his eyes, face flushed hot. He definitely should not be focusing his eyes on his childhood friend's chest. Not only is it downright weird, but if Winry caught him in the act she'd bludgeon him to death with more than just her wrench.
So he focuses on something more north of that: her hair.
He absentmindedly thinks he likes her hair. It's blonde, like his and Al's, but a brighter shade. Kind of reminds him of lemons. It's longer than his too, but that makes sense given she's been growing it out since she was seven. She's got it tied back in a ponytail and her trademark bandana, except for those two long strands in the front.
He doesn't really understand that. Why would she pull it back like that but keep those two strands? Seems like an easy way to get her hair stuck in machinery—something he's heard Granny stress to Winry when the girl first started working in the shop. And sometimes the dangling hairs tickle as she bends over him to get a better look at his automail. It's kinda annoying if he's being honest.
Next, his eyes catch on her earrings—the ones he an Al bought her roughly a year ago.
He still couldn't believe she actually poked holes in her ears to fit them all. What an idiot, who does that?
Though, he has to admit they do look nice on her…
He shakes his head; not quite sure where that thought had come from. He decides to quit staring at her ears and go for the next thing, which are her eyes.
They're a nice color of blue, he thinks to himself. The blue eye color is common—especially in Amestris—but he thinks Winry's is unique.
He remembers Uncle Urey and Auntie Sara having blue eyes—obviously where Winry inherited hers from. Though Urey's reminded Ed more of the sky before a storm, while Sara's reminded him of a fresh body of water.
Winry's eyes remind him the summer sky and he can't describe it but they have a calming effect on him. Sometimes he thinks he could stare at her eyes all day.
In fact he's staring at her eyes right now and that quite literally freaks Ed out. To the point he actually jumps and screams out a yelp.
"Oh, sorry!" Winry quickly apologizes. "Did I pinch a nerve?"
Ed tries to hold down his blush as he says, "N-No, I'm fine. You're good. Continue."
He knows Winry is giving him a look (with those clear summer sky eyes that Ed is very much aware of now) that probably indicates she thinks he's insane, but he can't care now. Thankfully she doesn't ask further questions and continues with her work.
Ed lets out a calming breath and decides to stay far, far away from Winry's eyes. They do nothing but make him think weird, stupid thoughts. So all that leaves for him to examine are her lips.
They're in a thin line at the moment as she concentrates on her work. They're a pale pink color. In the big cities and even at the military headquarters he's seen women have lips of all different shades of pink or red. Ed is aware they're wearing makeup—his mother would put on some kind of lip-gloss if she were to go out to the market—but he doesn't think Winry ever uses the stuff. She's still a young girl, though, so it's not like she has to wear it... But still, Ed can't help but think she looks fine without it.
More than fine, actually. He'd never admit it out loud, but Winry is a very pretty girl.
In fact, Edward would go as far to say that once she gets older and matures, she would be quite beautiful.
Winry suddenly pokes her tongue out and licks her dry lips. Ed subconsciously licks his own. He wonders what her lips taste like…?
…
WHAT.
THE.
HELL?!
WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!
Absolutely mortified by his own thoughts, Edward averts his eyes from his mechanic and stares wide-eyed and flabbergasted at the ceiling. His face feels like the colonel burned it with his flame alchemy.
'Shit, SHIT! Okay, okay just calm down. Think of something else! Anything else!'
It's futile though as many thoughts suddenly swarm Edward's head.
How could this happen?! How did he not notice before how attractive she is? Maybe he's always known, but these…these feelings that are accompanying this—this reaction he's having! This isn't good, not good at all…
"Ed?"
He can't deal with hormones! Not now, not with Alphonse stuck in a suit of armor and being unable to even feel the rain on his skin! What right does Ed have to find his mechanic pretty when there's a chance if they don't find a Philosopher's Stone, Al might never get a chance at love at all!
"Hey, Ed, you in there?"
This is the worst thing to happen! No, he won't let it happen! He'll just ignore these intrusive thoughts and feelings. Yeah, bury them deep, deep, DEEP underground where they will hopefully stay there until he DIES!
Or until he gets Alphonse's body back, whichever comes first…
"Edward Elric!"
He jumps and comes back into reality. He turns his head to Winry, who is glaring at him in annoyance, but he can also see there's concern in them as well.
"Y-yeah?" he gulps, hoping his face isn't red from the onslaught of emotions running through his mind.
Winry sighs, "I've been trying to get your attention, but you were majorly spaced out. What were you thinking about?"
'You.'
"Just…alchemy stuff," he says instead, avoiding eye contact. "Thinking about where Al and I will go next after here…"
He could tell she didn't believe him by the way her eyes narrow in suspicion. After a few seconds of contemplation, she gives a defeated sight and rolls her eyes.
"Fine, keep your secrets. Anyways," she gives his automail arm a few pats, "your maintenance is done. Try to take better care of it, you hear me?"
He gives her an eye roll of his own and sits up from the exam table, "Yeah, yeah, I'll try my best this time around."
As he reaches for his shirt that hangs on a nearby chair, Winry addresses him again, "It's almost supper. Granny will be making stew tonight."
Ed hums in response as he clothes his torso. His eyes are still focused on his mechanic whose back is turned to him as she cleans up her station. The realizations he made in the last few minutes are still fresh in his mind.
He's noticed his childhood friend is attractive. And if his reaction to it is any indication, he might have actual real feelings for her.
But he can't do anything about it. Not now at least…
But maybe someday…when he can rest easily knowing his little brother isn't just a soul bound to a suit of armor, when the military isn't an issue, and Ed isn't mostly metal himself.
Someday…
"Edward?"
Once again, Winry's voice forces him back to the present, "Yes?"
Winry regards him with worry, "Are you sure you're okay?"
He can't let her know. Not yet, anyway. It's too soon…
So he does what he does best: burry his emotions deep. He puts on a fake smile and hopes she doesn't ask further questions.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a lot on my mind."
She nods sadly and he makes his getaway up the stairs.
Maybe one day he'll acknowledge his feelings.
But he won't allow today to be that day.

do I have that book challenge
tagged by @elizabethsyson and while photos were absolutely helpful (for example, in explaining the first question) I did this mostly from memory in downtime at work so I couldn't exactly take pictures as I went, and tbh I don't trust tumblr not to eat my post if I upload a bunch of pictures at once
Do you have a book with deckled edges?
thank you so much for the picture because if that's the thing with the pages not exactly matching up, (but within a small deviation from perfectly square) yes, my copy of the first three Dragonriders of Pern books in one volume has deckled edges. also probably some other books, but I've been reading that one recently so I'm sure about it
Do you have a book with 3 or more people on the cover?.
yeah: Inverloch (Volume 1)
it's the printed version of (the first portion of) a webcomic, which I didn't know when I picked it up at a garage sale or something. I hadn't even heard of webcomics yet
and. hm. don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the premise of the story and it was never really bad... I was thrilled when I realized it was a webcomic and still online and i could read the whole thing.
but
the major plot twist, one the author had apparently planned from the very beginning, honestly had some very unfortunate implications that would haunt me if I ever attempted a reread.
Like, it was set up well enough to be a surprise but not a shock. and it enabled the happy ending. but I probably would have preferred almost any other happy or vaguely positive ending, or even a meaningful depressing ending, I was that disappointed
on the other hand the rest of it was written well enough that I cared so.... eh. it is what it is
I'm just not sure I still love it enough to recommend, but I also wouldn't stop someone from picking it up off my shelf to read, you know what I mean? Especially just that first part, which was plenty good.
Do you have a book based on another fictional story?
D&D guidebooks are totally based on Lord of the Rings, right?
lol in reality uh
the copy of Scandinavian folk tales including my favorite fairy tale ever was always my dad's, not mine, no matter how many times I read it before moving out
uh
my wife has several Halo books? like the video game. I'm not actually sure which came first and I haven't read any of those, but they are on "my" (our) shelf
I also have a lot of Harry Potter meta/derivatives, including that themed Haggadah I think I posted a picture of recently. But the phrasing of this question makes me think the intent is "fiction based on other fiction" so none of those quite count.
so yeah, Halo's the closest I've got. also there's a Star Trek book on that shelf that I didn't even know we had until I went looking for clocks on covers
Do you have a book with a title 10 letters long?
Sadly I don't have my own copy of Dragon's Kin, which kicks off an excellent subseries of Pern books, (nor Dragonsong but I didn't expect to have that one) but what I did find was
The Visitor (which is animorphs#2)
Do you have a book with a title that starts and ends with the same letter?
Erec Rex: The Dragon's Eye
Do you have a Mass Market Paperback book?
does my solid half of the animorphs series all on one shelf count or is this looking for specific branding?
Do you have a book written by an author using a pen name?
(immediately thinks of Lewis Carrol) um Edwin Abbot was also a mathematician but sadly not a penname, but I do I have a copy of Flatland
Oh, but I'm pretty sure I have some of the ghostwritten animorphs books, do those count? Specifically someone mentioned recently that animorphs 25 was the first of the ghostwritten books and I definitely have that one
Do you have a book with a character’s name in the title?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Ender's Shadow on my shelf, the rest I mostly have as ebooks. also the first Erec Rex book (mentioned above) and the entire Kirsten (American Girl) series plus the first Kit book.
Do you have a book with 2 maps in it?
the first one I found was The Malloreon Volume 1 (also has 3 characters on the cover). it's got a map of the western kingdoms before the first book and a map of Mallorea in the middle of the third book
Do you have a book that was turned into a TV show
Animorphs again
Do you have a book written by someone who is originally famous for something else?(celebrity/athlete/politician/tv personality…)
I definitely had a phase of buying books by famous people, so I have the worst bulkiest copy of Origin of Species which is printed in a terrible font (it also has deckled edges for that matter), and The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, that I could find at a quick glance. Probably something by Steven Hawking hiding somewhere
my phenomenal copy of The Elements (Euclid) doesn't quite count because he's most famous, now, for writing those so...
(Einstein's Relativity - in translation obviously because I know very little German - is deceptively short but that was my parents' book that I tried and failed to read, not my own)
Do you have a book with a clock on the cover?
Disappointingly, An Uncommon History of Common Things does not. I do have a Doctor Who coloring book with a clocklike gear pattern on the cover which is the closest I'm finding
Do you have a poetry book?
yeah someone once gave me a book of Japanese death poems, translated of course. I've been meaning to read them. for that I have to find it, and I can't right now :/ now that I remember the book I want to go read it
Do you have a book with an award stamp on it?
not that I can find? apparently Dragonflight or Dragonquest won "a Hugo or Nebula award" (bc McCaffrey was the first woman to win one of those) but wikipedia isn't telling me which award or which book, and I don't have the dust jacket for the original-trilogy-in-one-volume copy that I have so there's no telling if it "should" have an award printed on the front
Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you?
ooh wouldn't that be fun. I don't seem to :/
what I do have is a book written by an author with what my initials would be if I had taken my wife's last name instead of the other way around which I guess is close enough
Do you have a book of short stories?
yes, surprisingly. The Girl Who Heard Dragons and I haven't read any of them, not even the story I got it for
oh, and First Meetings, which is a bunch of short stories in the Ender universe
Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long?
That's... really specific. Closest I could find was 483 pages and 513 pages (Volume 2 of The Belgariad and The Malloreon, respectively) In general I have a lot of books around 300-350 pages and a fair few over 700 pages, but not many close to 500
Do you have a book that was turned into a movie?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, for sure. I think Flatland was also made into a movie and it was as phenomenally terrible as you would expect of a story about 2d shapes. not even shapes with faces, just shapes, and one sphere.
Do you have a graphic novel?
I was going to make all sorts of qualifications of "well... if something originally published as a webcomic is now in physical book form.... (Inverloch again) but actually I have volumed 1 and 3-7 of Tomo (manga-style "preteen protag moves in with Christian family members and has both fantasy adventures and learns the benefits of being Christian" no-subtlety series that I picked up at Family Christian Stores when they were still everywhere. also I probably still have the first six Serenity "books" but I can't find them (not fantasy: rebellious "sinful" teen moves to new school and hangs out with the Christians because she wants to sleep with one of them, eventually sees the errors of all her ways, un-dyes her hair, and converts. Also no subtlety)
I had a phase when I was "too old" for veggie tales but still thought FCS was the best place ever but if that really was the best of their "teen" content it really wasn't great
Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors?
are we limiting this to novels? I have The Great Snape Debate (meta published before Deathly Hallows, with short chapters by two alternating authors, plus they got Orson Scott Card to write a chapter to draw reader attention with the big name and hey it worked, I bought it, arguing (between all of them) both sides of "will Snape turn out to be on Harry's side after all" and also The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern which as the title implies, is more of a guide than a real story.
Oh, but I do have a copy of Invasive Procedures (Card & Johnson).
Did I miss any questions? tumblr's being particularly weird today.
anyway I suppose I should tag some fellow bookworms. @knightbusofdoom @copperscales and if anyone else wants me to edit to in so you're "really" tagged, just may me know, and if you just want to do it please do and tag me back
#tag games#book scavenger hunt#this was fun but it took a lot of time for some of them#asks and answers#there's some definite themes here

Ed for character ask, if you want! Have a nice day ❤️
If I want? If I want??? If I want?!?!?! OF COURSE I WANT TO. Ed ruined my life in the best possible way and I will ramble about him forever. LET’S. DO. THIS.
How I feel about this character:
Obviously, you guys know that Edward Elric is not only my favorite character in the fma universe, but probably my favorite character in general. He’s excellently written, deeply representative of the nature of humanity, and endures beautifully subtle development over the course of his story. I’ve done several character analyses of Ed, but I tend to ramble. Here, I really want to take my time, and talk about specific aspects of his character I think are the most worthy of note. This might get l o n g, so grab some snacks and settle in. Let’s talk about the Fullmetal Alchemist!
One of most defining and well-written characteristics of Ed is his tragic backstory. The consequences of attempting to revive their mother follow Ed and Al years after it occurs, and forms one the main backbone of their story. While the immediate aftermath tends to define a large part of Ed’s personality in the beginning, what makes him so fascinating is that he eventually learns that using his personal tragedies as an excuse for his shortcomings with get him nowhere. Instead, he learns to use his suffering as a springboard to make sure no one else ever has to feel the way he and his brother did. The awful things that happen to Nina are a major setback, but instead of collapsing further in on himself, Ed, mostly thanks to Al, realizes that not only is it ok to start by trying to save himself, but with that effort, he can become stronger, and by extension, do more to help others. So, instead of using tragedy as an excuse for his weaknesses, Ed faces them to make himself stronger, and throughout his journey, use them as markers of his progress, or as checks to his humility.
Ed is also incredibly well-written to reflect his age. Sure, your average twelve-year-old is not an alchemic prodigy serving in the military, but I’m talking about how Ed reacts to his circumstances as a boy who’s just trying to piece he and his brother’s lives back together. Ed can play up the adult facade as much as he wants, but Arakawa also wrote him to be what he is; a kid. In the early stages of his story, Ed reacts to many inconveniences with fits of frustration, triumphs with unabashed cockiness, and authority or criticism with an upturned nose. Most of these immature reactions lessen or die out as his story progresses, as it does when someone starts to grow up. I can say that after living with a younger brother at ages 12, 13, 14, etc., Arakawa did a spectacular job of not only capturing those years with deadly accuracy, but applying them to an extraordinary individual like Ed in a way that felt effortless. While on a quest that eventually would determine the fate of the world as they knew it, he also gets nervous over a crush, and deals with the ups and downs of teenage friendships. (I mean, 99.9% of people’s best friends in high school don’t give up control of their body to an immortal being but there’s a metaphor I’m getting at here.)
Another super interesting aspect of Ed’s character is his guilt complex. For someone who so acts his age, he still takes on blame for many things that legitimately weren’t his fault. He blames himself for the loss of Al’s body, though there was no way he could’ve know what Truth would’ve taken from him, or that Truth would’ve intervened at all. He chastises himself for not being useful in dire situations when Winry stepped up to deliver Dominic’s grandchild in Rush Valley. It wasn’t his area of expertise, while Winry, he acknowledges, grew up with doctors for parents and reading medical textbooks. He feels helpless, but how could he know he would find himself in such a situation? He even holds himself responsible as a culprit in Hughes’ death for getting him involved in their research of philosophers’ stones. What Hughes discovered about the nationwide transmutation circle was, ultimately, his own doing. In addition, besides blaming himself for the loss of Al’s body, a guilt that Ed carries to the end of his story was his inability to save Nina. Just because he was the first person to put all the pieces together, he thought that if he realized Shou Tucker’s true intentions that much sooner, she would still be alive. Yet, realistically, no one else had figured it out either. He was just in the wrong place at the right(?) time. Yet, all of this being said, the moments during which Ed overcomes some of his guilt are some of the most powerful in the entire story. (Learning that Al didn’t blame him for the loss of his body is a prime example.)
As I’ve mentioned in other recent character analyses, a complex personality is key to a strong and likable character, and my god, does Ed have one. Ed has many traits that make him just fascinating to watch. While his early cynicism of humanity fades away, he remains cocky, stubborn, abrasive, short-tempered, sarcastic, occasionally hostile to figures of authority, and not one above stroking his own ego. Yet, a lot of those aspects of his personality veer towards superficial. He views every human life (in all forms) as sacred, and something he is painfully reluctantly to use to further his own goals. To those who earn his respect, he is endlessly loyal, selfless, and fights for those who can’t fight for themselves. His personality also takes on a different tint (like a real person) when he interacts with different people. He fights to see the Ling within Greed, but ultimately respects Greed as a member of his team. He’s in awe, yet honest with Riza. He’s sarcastic with Roy, but when in danger, is his greatest ally. He’s level-headed, firm, and forgiving with Al. He’s uniquely gentle and compassionate to Winry. In short, he’s beautifully and painfully human.
Finally, Ed is an excellent foil to the character of Father. While the latter tried to make himself a perfect being by ridding himself of humanity’s seven deadly sins (an idea I remember someone, though I can’t remember who, likening his goal to the idea of Nietzsche’s “Übermensch,” which is basically a form of superior man who could rise above traditional Christian values to impose his own. That sounds pretty accurate to me, but I’m no expert in this corner of philosophy.), Ed actively embraced all of his flaws, guilt, and well, sins, to ultimately become a more compassionate individual who is able to ultimately triumph over evil. (As a side note, Greed’s aid in this final battle really adds extra emphasis to his earlier explanation to Ed that “everyone wants something they cannot have.” The fact that Greed sacrifices himself in this moment to assure Father’s defeat proves that point several times over, which just makes those final sequences of the battle that much cooler [and heartbreaking]). The fact that Ed, who is riddled with what Father considers the ultimate faults of humanity, still overcomes him, proves that the rejection of own’s own humanity is a greater evil than the sum of it’s parts. As a huge characterization nerd, that’s pretty freaking cool.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Edwin is easily one of my top five OTPs, and I honestly don’t see shipping Ed with anyone else. Like Roy and Riza, Ed and Winry’s relationship is built on years of trust, respect, friendship, and tragedy. While they sometimes struggle with communicating their feelings, whether its about each other or the circumstances they’re facing, they always manage to get their feelings across when the moment demands it. It seems that their respective obsessions confuse or annoy each other, yet, they each possess huge admiration for the other’s accomplishments and passions. They understand the harsh burden of losing their parents, and Winry never judges Ed for attempting to revive his mother, likely because she had the same kind of longing. In addition, each of them are deeply concerned for the safety of the other, with Ed especially going to great lengths to ensure Winry is unaffected with his involvement in the military. Sadness of one pains the other, and they’re both hellbent on making sure the other is, in the end, happy. Talk about the makings of a great relationship! Also, at the most basic level, they’re SO DAMN ADORABLE.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
I have to go with Al here. (Also apparently this got too long to add more gifs so rip to that idea…) These two have been through so much together, balance the weight of their varying personalities, and as a result, are the ultimate allies. Besides the deep care these brothers share, the most interesting aspect about them is how their personalities contrast and support one another. Ed is typically hot-headed and impulsive. Al is calmer and leans more towards logic. Ed has a big ego and is sarcastic. While Al has his moments, he’s unflinchingly kindhearted. However, their mutual passion for alchemy, humanity, and completing their quest are unmatched. The story is about brotherhood, and these two are the ultimate protagonists. Al’s superior battle sense, levelheadedness, and gentle personality are the perfect balance to Ed. He brings him back down to earth, yet encourages him to race to the ends of it. They joke and argue, but you know they would sacrifice everything for the other.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
*sigh* The Ed being really short joke did eventually get old…
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
As is the case with many fma characters in my book, I want to see more! Knowing Ed, there’s no way this kid would peak at 18. I want to see his adventures after the promised day. I want to see him with Winry and his kids, being a great father, but I also want to see him traveling, discovering, and maybe getting himself into a bit of trouble here and there! At the end of years of struggling and hardship, I want to see the next crazy step in his journey. There’s no way he’d sit still for long. The sky’s barely the limit for Ed, and i want to see how far he flies.
Send me a character, if you dare.
