Mattress
(Niko Omilana x f! reader)
Summary : How can helping a dear friend ever go wrong?.......Right?
Warnings : smut, friends to lovers
If you weren't oblivious, it would seem crystal clear that something about your best friend definitely turned you on.
Was it his gorgeous smile? Maybe.
Was it how his eyes never seem to leave yours when you two make small talk? Perhaps.
Was it how his body completely enveloped yours as he pounded you on the soft mattress of his new bed? ......yeah.
.
.
.
"I still don't know why out of all the people in your contact list, I was the one you called to place this huge mattress down". You groan a little, playfully punching Niko's arm.
"Why not? haven't met you in a bit anyways. Good time to catch up y/n, don't be so mean". He pouts a little before ruffling your hair.
"Alright, Alright. I'm helping see-"
You reach out to tuck the covers of the mattress, unknowingly hiking your shirt up and giving Niko a good 'show' of your bare waist.
"Yeah you're definitely helping.......".
Niko scratches the back of his neck and tries to brush away these thoughts, when suddenly your phone rings on the nightstand.
"Oh excuse me for a bit".
You take your phone and head towards the living room to receive the call. Niko busies himself in placing the other ends of the cover and sets all his pillows down.
He let's out a chuckle looking at all the silly pillows you got him throughout the years that he still keeps on his bed. That man's life might as well revolve around yours.
"Sorry Nik, boss called. Apparently one of my coworkers can't figure out how to open a fuckin- what the hell are you doing?"
You look up from your phone to see a smiling Niko laying down on his bed starfish style.
"Had to check the bed yk"
"This? This is your way of checking the bed?" You ask him, your arms crossed over your chest.
He grins like a schoolboy and looks up at the ceiling.
A wicked idea runs through your head.
"Y/n wha- ".
You land on top of him with a thud.
The longing for his warmth was too much for you to handle. A sleepy Niko, laying down on a perfectly made bed, lights dimmed to perfection...and his warm, open, embrace.
So you did what anyone would do.
You jumped on top of him.
You jumped on top of your best friend.
You jumped on top of Niko Omilana.
Before you could register the embarrassment, Niko starts laughing.
"Did I make it look that good?"
"Well the bed looked cozy..."
You bury your face in his chest to hide your flushed cheeks and Niko could swear he was dying by your cuteness by the passing second.
"You're something else really".
Niko exhales slowly, letting one of his hands rest on the small of your back, the other gently hoisting your face up to meet his eyes.
He could only hope that he wasn't reading the situation wrong.
Suddenly, with newfound confidence, you run your hand timidly through his soft, curly, locks. Lightly running your fingertips along the ridges of his ear, you cup his jaw.
Niko closes the gap between you two.
You close your eyes. You stop thinking. You really don't need to. It's happening, happening right now.
His loft lips meet yours with such urgency that you stifle back a gasp. Niko flips you to his position, never breaking the kiss.
He let's his hands slowly caress your body, his face turning a cute shade of pink upon seeing your disheveled state and your plumpy lips all too sore from that intense make out session.
.
.
.
The headboard of his bed thuds against the wall periodically.
Clothes had gone flying to the corner of the room. Now all that mattered to him was the woman who laid down before him, bare, beautiful, intoxicating.
.
.
.
Broken chants of his name leave your lips.
Niko's head nested in the side of your neck, alternating between sucking dark hickeys and small licks, soothing the skin. His cock buried in you. With every thrust he could feel you trembling underneath him, your hips moving to meet his.
He increases his pace, smirking when you tightly grab his biceps to keep yourself sturdy. Your lips find his exchanging 'I love yous' and sweet words between kisses.
You clench around him tightly as you feel your orgasm approaching as Niko leaves kisses on your shoulders.
Your legs wrap around his torso pushing him deeper inside you, your back arching at the sensation.
You reach your high wrapped around him as he spills inside you.
.
.
.
Niko kisses your forehead as you scoot closer to him to lie down on his chest. Passionate exchanges of love between you two. He wraps his arms around your body, holding you to him.
Niko let's his eyes fall shut, thankful for the turn of events.
Thank god Kenny didn't pick the call when Niko wanted help for fitting his mattress.

"Oh, hey, Y/n!" Monty smiles, standing up from the bench he sat on. He'd spotted you with your friends, Crystal, Niko, Charles, and Edwin, as you were coming back from another detective-y mission.
"Hey!" You grin, picking up your pace to reach him quicker.
"I got you that reading." He hands you a book, inside is a paper, a circle in the middle, with lots of writing and colored lines. "Like the outfit"
"Oh, thank you!" You smile, looking down at your dark blue bell bottom jeans and orange sweater. "I keep it time accurate here." You joke, a hand over your chest, resting dramatically as you hold your head high.
Your friends stand behind Monty, waiting for you to come along at the end of the block.
"I don't even know where to start. There's a lot going on here, dude." You awkwardly chuckle, looking to him for an explanation to his diagram.
"Okay, uh, let me explain"
The four awkwardly wait for you, now realizing that you were clearly going to be here for a minute. They weren't going to leave you alone on the street, though, knowing a witch and that damn Cat King were running around wreaking havoc.
"This is kind of..."
"Adorable"
"Wasteful"
Crystal lightly slaps Edwin. "Shush."
Edwin rolls his eyes. "This is wasting our valuable time. May we leave now?"
"Nope" Charles replies, muttering, eyes stuck on you two. "Look"
The other three look over at you and Monty, listening in as they silence themselves.
"You're really attractive, I mean, that's obviously a/n z/s thing, clearly," He awkwardly smiles.
You feel your face warm up a bit as you cross your arms. "Thanks"
That look.
Jesus Christ, Edwin would die over and over again to have Charles look at him like that.
Monty looked at you with full adoration, like he'd never met anyone so beautiful, inside and out. He looked at you like angels sang on your shoulders, like you were an altar to God.
The girls turn back to the boys.
"They're so in love with each other," Niko grins.
Crystal nods beside her.
"We need to get them to just" Charles squeezes his hands. "Kiss already"
"We'll devise a plan, then" Edwin replies. "They're quiet oblivious already, I doubt they're actually thinking he's flirting with them"
"We could force them to be alone together?" Crystal suggests. "Lock them in a room, or make them sit down with each other and get the romantic tension flowing?"
"That's brills"
"Nothing cushy"
You catch up to your friends, having said goodbye to Monty, as he had places to be. "Sorry, I'm back! What're you talking about?"
"Oh, nothing," Crystal swiftly replies
"You realize he was flirting with you, yes?" Edwin asks
"Huh?"
"He was flirting with you. Monty"
"What do you mean he was flirting with me? He's just really nice" you shrug
Edwin sighs. "I told you"

I need more Dead Boys Detectives because of so many reasons that I’ve seen so many other people posting. Edwin x Charles, what happened to Niko, Crystal going home, the slight possibility of seeing the Cat King again.
But also, and I’m sad I haven’t seen anyone else say this yet, but I need more of the Night Nurse. I need to see her trying to reign in the Dead Boys+ and failing, and giving in, and Ruth Connell being the awesome and hilarious Scottish lady she is.

Ok, ok, so, I read this post (and loved it) and the idea was instantaneous. Maybe I'll write it, maybe I won't, but I need it written down, so if anyone is interested.
Imagine a case of human sacrifices. The boys are called (Niko alive and with them!) to this case through a ghost who was sacrificed and seeks justice and can pay well. Then they find out that these people are being sacrificed to the Cat King. A witch turned one of his cats into a human (Esther and Monty style) and the cat becomes a bit fanatical and sacrifices people as gifts, secret admirer style. Edwin is clearly jealous. And the Cat King helps them with the case, just to get close to his ghost. In the middle of the case or when it ends, Edwin admits (by accident) that he was jealous and the Cat King simply loves that fact. Then he asks permission for a kiss, and it happens. And I would love a more explicit scene from them with lots of dirty talk and compliment kink, but I'll take any crumbs.
First time: in the middle of the case there may even be the cat finding out and going after Edwin and King Cat becoming super protective (and the team, obviously) and having another kiss in front of the people or later, in private. Or the second version, after the affair, like farewell sex, and Edwin talking about how he loved it to Charles or Niko and there's a cute moment of friendship.
Also in the scene there are two possibilities, either the boys and Crystal still living there with Niko to stay with her while she recovers or Niko finding out about the case through this ghost she found in the library or I don't know and talking to the boys and them coming from London (hence the farewell sex) and then returning there, or even the four of them living in London and the ghost going after them (or even Gato Rei asking for help) to ask for help and them going to city of Gato Rei (I forgot the name) and then returning to London (or maybe they stay and open an office?).
Anyway, maybe I thought about this a little too much.

Hey I was just wondering if you could write a Monty the crow x siren!reader? Maybe he was out looking for shiny rocks and he met them and they fell in love. No pressure or anything. Hope you have a wonderful day 💜💜💜
The siren and their crow
Monty x gn!reader
Tumblr media
Monty was collecting sea glass along the shores of ports townend. Niko had told him all about the different coloured glass and wanted to find his own. A head popped out of the water only...they had gills and scales on the side of their face and webbed ears....a siren?!
"What are you doing...?" The siren asked. Looking at Monty. "Um...collecting sea glass..." he said showing the handful of pebble-like objects. "Wow...they're so pretty..." the siren said fully sitting on the Shore their tail still half in the water. Monty smiled and handed a blue one to them. "I'm Monty..." he said smiling. "I'm... [y/n]" They smiled showing their sharp teeth.
In that moment it was the cliché of love at first sight. Over the weeks Monty would come and collect more sea glass and rocks with the help of [y/n] looking in the water. One day Monty came down but [y/n] wasn't around, he was a bit disheartened but brushed it off. Soon the familiar [y/h] haired siren appeared but…on land!?. “What…how!” Monty stuttered. [Y/n] giggled “I could always walk on land…I just prefer the ocean more.”
[Y/n] and Monty walked along the pebbly Shore talking and laughing about their week. Monty soon began to babble on about astrology and the dead boy detectives….especially Edwin. [Y/n] felt a bit jealous about it…feeling as though Monty was in love with him…not them.
So the next time Monty mentioned seeing the group [y/n] tagged alone. It was extremely off-putting for the group to see a person with sharp teeth, scales, gills and slit eyes walking around. “Hi! I'm [y/n] I'm Monty's friend” they said happily. Edwin and Charles looked a bit sceptical, Crystal was wary of them and Niko... Well, she was all for [y/n] being there. Said something about more friends? Every now and again the two would steal glances at each while the group was distracted. But Niko was very aware and set up a plan to get the two alone and not distracted by anyone or even sea glass. So the group all went for coffee excluding Edwin and Charles as one, couldn't drink it and two they are ghosts and can't be seen. Monty and [y/n] decided to go to the library.
"Oo monty look! Astrology books" [y/n] pointed out drinking their hot chocolate. Monty looked at the book, "I've already read with one..." he chuckled sheepishly. "Is there one you haven't read?" They asked curiously. He shook his head. "Wow, you're a nerd huh?" He teased. Monty's face went red. "You know... Niko has been trying to get us alone..." Monty said looking at the bookshelf. "Why?" [Y/n] asked confused. "To get us together..." he laughed nervously. "But we..." they trailed off. Monty nodded. "They don't know," he said. [Y/n] made an "o" shape and nodded. "What? Wanting to keep me all to yourself little crow?" They teased getting up in his face. Monty blushed and nodded slowly. "Aww, cute!" They giggled and kissed his cheek.

prompt: mindreading
pairing: crystal/niko (heavily implied, but can be read as one-sided pining if that's your jam), ficlet, 700~ words, T
———
"Wait, you want me to read your mind? You're not scared of someone taking a peek into that brain of yours?"
Maybe it's because of her own peculiar experiences with... not exactly unwanted, but genuinely huge mistakes of wanted guests in her head. But Crystal cannot fathom the idea to voluntarily make anyone privy to your thoughts, on a whim. She's done it enough for other people, sure; usually under the disguise of a case and protected by the motives, but she still had a preference of simply talking to people, hoping for the best that they would disclose the necessary information. Her budding empathy clashes somewhat with her psychic powers. There was a time she vaguely remembers, where she wouldn't bat an eye at using them for her advantage, even if it meant stepping on a few heads. Well. Not anymore.
It made something in her chest feel noble; a sensation she was not used to.
With great power comes great responsibility, et cetera, right?
Nevertheless, the casual allowance of Niko to make herself comfy in her brain, with no specific time slot seems intimate down to a T. Something you would allow under very specific circumstances, preferably after thorough discussion with the subject. A life or death situation, perhaps. It would be reserved for the closest bunch of people, unless your poor judgement decided to omit the jarring red flags and said, you know what, my scarlet matches your ruby.
There are choices you cannot go back from, as she is painfully aware.
In her lap, Niko brushes two fingers along Crystal's knuckles, from where she is cradling her palm. It feels strangely precious, encased in the softness of the other girl's hand. Crystal's gaze glides over to the intricate rings matching the long, beautiful pastel nails, decorated with small pearls and tiny ribbons. The touch brings dual sensations: there are the pads, soft like a cat's and similar to it, the sharper points of the nails leave blunt dents on the top of her palm. She belately realises, I wouldn't mind if you pressed harder. Make me feel it.
Crystal's gaze snaps back upwards, guiltily. She almost regrets it. The way Nico's face twists into a shy smile, Crystal feels the touch spark through her hand and race towards the chest like a livewire, a pulsing need. "I have nothing to hide from you."
"That's not true. Everyone has secrets they want to keep," she protests weakly.
"I promise to keep it G-rated," Niko laughs, and Crystal is lightheaded from it, glad she is already sitting down, because hey, did she just—
"Crystal. You need to see the bird."
Before she can cut it short, Niko lifts the hand she so generously cradled up to her forehead— in a mimicry of the main guy from— uh, was it the X-Men movies? Like she believed touching the temples while mindreading was essential to the process. Crystal's powerless against the flutter of her eyelashes when she's trying to focus and relax at once, the slightest of frowns gracing her forehead.
Her fingers are being gripped harder, determined. She wants to keep her there.
Crystal debates on whether it would work anyway, because how could she think about some stupid bird, when Niko is right there? An open, well-loved paperback, ready to fill you with strange images of her own design.
She gets hit with a memory like a pop-up ad, but without the surge of overwhelm and annoyance, the part where she's prying open inside smoother than anticipated.
The sight comes with a filter of pure admiration and some childlike wonder. The edges of the vision are swimming in bright, peak summer hues, teal sky and rich green bushes with pinkish yellow sparkling in the heat. Niko must have watched the scene from a sidewalk, and she had to be pretty close to see so clearly. The crow inside the memory drops a walnut from its beak right before a car drives over it, cracking open the hard shell, and the bird dives precisely half a second later, catching the remains of the nut in mid-air. Show off, Crystal snickers to herself. Surprisingly, she finds a familiar, amused chuckle reverbating around her temple. It's strange enough that Crystal gets thrown out of the vision far too quickly. She pushes the need to stay, down.
Niko cracks open one eye, apparently much too excited to keep going. "Did you see that? Did you see?"
"Uh. Yeah. I did." It's a tiny shock, to come out of the vision. "That was..."
Unexpected. Amazing. If I saw the world through your eyes, I wouldn't think it's genuine shit all the time.
"...nice."

We need to talk about Niko
This girl would have got such a huge role in the next season. Her started the lost and found office, while somehow being in a time mess up. She probably made a huge character development. We would have got more of those silly spirts as her new assistants. Niko in the past working to help the present. That has a bit of Loki the series vibe to it somehow. Maybe she even got some supernatural abilities like the night nurse. Or did she created her? Real girl power was taken. And maybe this could have also lead to a relationship between Crystal and Niko because they realise their feelings by the lake of the other one. I want more lesbians in the media! But even old Niko is a whole cool topic. She knows her friends, but cannot tell them who she is. Maybe due to time problems. But maybe she could still help them in their cases.
Soooo many opportunity and ideas. Well now I would love to use them in fanfics or rps. (Guys, please make fanfics about Niko. She deserves that.)
If anyone wants to do this ‘season 2’ Niko story with Niko X Crystal with me, I am open for it. I would prefer to play Niko and start when she is old and needs to help the agency without revealing herself…check out my rp roles if interested and text me

Maybe this I unhinged, or maybe my brain is just odd, but... Does anyone else ship Charles and Monty?
Like I can just picture him going out of his way, doing things to and trying to get Monty's attention or show that he's a good guy. And little does Charles know he is doing these things because he actually has a crush on the crow boy 👀
Literally my ships for DBD is as follows
Edwin x Cat King
Niko x Crystal
Charles x Monty

If you do poly character x reader x characters, can you do poly niko and crystal dating a mermaid reader, please
Mermaid Lagoon
a/n : this is my first dead boy detective oneshot and I’m so excited!!! This show has quickly become one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy!!😊
Warnings: David eww, mermaid killings, Niko’s dad mentioned, Angie the angelfish
Niko x fem!reader x Crystal
Tumblr media
You never imagined you fall in love with a human, nonetheless two human girls. They’d found you during there case on Angie the Angelfish. Initially the dead boy detectives believed that you, the only mermaid that resided in the mermaid lagoon that connected to the sea were to blame.
They had quickly captured you in an enchanted net and questioned you rather sharply. Unfortunately for them you had an alibi, you had been entertaining a group of Port Townsan’s children after they found your Lagoon.
Fortunately for the dead boys you were kind enough to help them with there problem, especially because many of the children you knew would be going to the kite festival. As you helped you bonded rather quickly with the white haired girl, Niko Sasaki.
She was sweet and so bubbly. She always asked you questions about your lagoon, your tail, how your hair was always dry. Her girlfriend however didn’t seem to like you every much. She was always moving away when you came close. After Charles threw the Nightnurse off the cliff you thought they would no longer need you.
But Edwin, the very tall and pale dead boy insisted that you remain with them just in case they had any need of a mermaid. Niko let you move into her room above the tongue and tail shop.
It’s often you don’t sleep at night, to many nightmare waiting to happen. Mermaids don’t exactly need a lot of sleep anyways. On one of the many nights you stand on the roof you find Crystal there. Her eyes red and puffy, her hands shaking gently.
She obviously did see you, or hear you. Slowly you approached her, placing your own incredible soft hand on her. She jerked her body slightly as she looked at you. She went to wipe her tears but you were faster.
You gently brushed your thumbs under eyes with a gentle smile. You’re perfect s/c skin shinning iridescently under the moonlight. She doesn’t stop crying, her body continued to shake. You brought her into your chest slowly rubbing her back.
Upon one summer's morning, I carefully did stray Down by the Walls of Wapping, where I met a sailor gay
You weren’t sure why you started to sing to her. Maybe it was because this was what your mother had done for you once. When you fears became to great and you couldn’t sleep.
Conversing with a young lass, who seemed to be in pain Saying William, when you go, I fear you will never return again
My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold There is nothing can console me, But my jolly sailor bold
Her breathing started to calm as you lulled her away from her horrible thoughts. Her hand found it way above your racing heart. You’d never held someone so close before.
You hadn’t held anyone in so long. The feeling of her warmth pressed against your colder body was nice. Strange in a way you couldn’t explain.
After she’d calmed down she looked up at you. Her eyes were red and puffy but no longer it a river of tears fall from them.
“Are you alright?” You keep your voice calm, almost hypnotic.
“Yeah… sorry I just,” She didn’t need to finished.
“Got too crowded up there?” She nodded her head. You didn’t move, you kept your arms around her.
“You may not know this but I have this demon in my head and he’s… he won’t leave me alone.” You brought your lips to her forehead, kissing her gently.
“Nightmares are the plague of sleep. A curse I only know too well.” You told her with a smile.
“Crystal?” Niko’s gently and sleepy voice came from the roof door. She stood in her pink silk nightdress that was covered in flowers. You felt your face flushed at the position you been caught in.
This was Niko’s girlfriend, your friend’s girlfriend. Niko had been the first person to show you kindness and believe that you hadn’t been sing people to death. She was the first person to cut you from the boys net and here you were. Holding and kiss her girlfriend.
Niko approached quickly and sat by your side. She nuzzled her way into your arms and wrapped her own around Crystal. You didn’t move, not wanting to bring any attention to your own racing heart.
“Why don’t you come get me?” Niko asked softly.
“Didn’t want to worry you, either of you.” Crystal voiced. Niko smiled at her and moved her face to you. She kissed your cheek with her surprisingly soft lips for someone who’d probably just woken up.
“I knew you liked us.” Niko whispered as she rested her own head on your chest. You stiffed up, your shoulders going ridged. Your face became hot as Niko giggled.
“How did you…..?”
“Wanna hear a secret?” Niko’s voice was chipper. You couldn’t move your mouth.
“We like you too.” Crystal finished.
………………………………
The water ripples around the teal shimmering tail attached to Y/n as she rests on the shore of her lagoon. Her two lovers sat on two large boulders to keep out of the water. Y/n brought her body between the pair as Niko continued to speak.
“And the cafe I found has crab for you Y/n!” Niko cheered as she kicked the water. Crystal chuckled as she took the shell from Y/n. It was a pale blue in color, matching the thick coat she wore.
“Niko that sounds lovely but you know I have to go to Atlantic tomorrow.” The two girls frown at the mention.
“I still don’t understand why you always have to go.” Niko whines softly.
“It’s a celebration for… for my dead pod. I have to go.” I mumbled softly. Crystal placed a hand on my shoulder. It was a fond memory of mine, when those hunters killed my entire pod and I had to flee in this lagoon.
“What were they like?” Crystal asked softly. I smile softly as the memories of my pod.
“My pod was an odd sort, we were all orphaned by mer-hunters. We clung to each other like the kelp that makes up our breeding grounds. We never could stray quite so far from one another.”
“Hey I’m also an orphan, well short of.” Niko added. I nod my head as I push myself up and kiss her. I run my hand through her white hair as she smiles.
“Will you sing for us?” Crystal asks softly.
Hear my voice beneath the sea, Sleeping now so peacefully At the bottom of the sea, Sleep for all eternity
Sailors live so restlessly, Come with me, sleep peacefully
Listen to this siren's song, Worry not for nothing's wrong
The two girls sat in silence as their mermaids voice rang out through their lagoon. There was no David. No annoyed dandelion sprites yelling. Just them as the mermaid sang.
Let my voice lead you this way, I will not lead you astray Trust me as we reach the side, Jumping out where men have died
Hear my voice beneath the sea, Sleeping now so peacefully At the bottom of the sea, Sleep for all eternity

Thank you so much :D I hope you're having a great day!
12) uncommon lgbtq+ headcanon for a character /[character]
Ooooh! Interesting! I don't know if I have uncommon headcanons in this direction... I definitely read Edwin as gay and Charles as bi. I like bi!Crystal as well—initially I definitely thought the stars etc she was seeing around Niko were just... manifestations of love at first sight lol
In terms of things I haven't yet seen: I would love to see Cat King doing more fun things with his appearance gender-wise. Give that cat a pussy! Give him top scars! He can look like anything he wants—let him play with that!
19) something in the show that made you sad
Just one thing? Just one? How to choose...
Of what I've seen so far (and yes I have still not seen past episode 5 beyond random clips), I think Charles dealing with the Devlin House hits the hardest for me. While I never dealt with physical abuse, I did grow up in a traumatic environment (three cheers for C-PTSD!), and I can absolutely relate to Charles in those moments, up to and including when he gets trapped in the loop—which of course speaks volumes about cyclical and generational violence :) :) :)
7) NOTP
Night Nurse x anyone. She's married to the job.
Other than that, I'm flexible :P
Ask me things!

For the week of 3 June 2019
Quick Bits:
Batman #72 essentially gives a bit of recontextualization for what has been going on during the series, giving a summation of events, in this third part of “The Fall and the Fallen” from Tom King, Mikel Janín, Jorge Fornés, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. It’s all right, with some glorious artwork as always, but it kind of feels like we’re treading water here.

Bettie Page: Unbound #1 builds on what’s come before and the magic of her unicursal hexagram pendant, but you needn’t have read anything previously as this first issue does a good job of weaving in the relevant information to inform this adventure. I quite like what David Avallone, Julius Ohta, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Taylor Esposito have been doing long term with Bettie Page and this is another fun start to the next chapter, blending Lovecraftian horror with a jaunt through pastiches of Dynamite’s current properties.

Birthright #36 returns from the trade break with the start of the next stage in dealing with the weakening walls between realms and what terrible things may happen as magic keeps building up on the threshold of our world. The artwork from Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas remains absolutely stellar as they, Joshua Williamson, and Pat Brosseau continue one of the best fantasy adventure series that strangely keeps flying under the radar.

Black Cat #1 is a highly entertaining debut, leaning hard into history and heists, with three tales spotlighting the Black Cat and the Black Fox. Jed MacKay pens two of the tales, one in the present illustrated by Travel Foreman, one in the past by Mike Dowling, both coloured and lettered respectively by Brian Reber and Ferran Delgado, that play stylistically off one another as they build up the respective crews and show them in action. There’s also a very cute two-page heist with cats by Nao Fuji.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5 begins a long dark night for Xander’s soul as he’s struggling with overcoming the demon trying to take control as a vampire. Great bits building what he means to Buffy and Willow. David López takes over line art duties here, and it’s definitely a change, darker and scratchier than what’s come before, but it suits the raw emotion of the story.

Captain Marvel #6 begins a tie-in to War of the Realms with Carol and Natasha trying to find Doctor Strange in South America. It’s a fun start to this story from Kelly Thompson, Annapaola Martello, Tamra Bonvillain, and Clayton Cowles with a Freaky Friday twist as they try to stop Enchantress.

Tumblr media
Criminal #5 begins “Cruel Summer”, which Ed Brubaker promises to possibly be the longest arc yet, kicking off an investigation into a woman running from an abusive affair. Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Jacob Phillips give us an intriguing start to this arc through a sad sack private investigator in Dan Farraday

DCeased #2 continues the destruction of the DC Universe through a “not zombie” zombie plague. Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Stefano Gaudiano, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte are telling a great horror story here, with some big casualties wiped off the board pretty quickly.

Tumblr media
Deadpool #13 is another War of the Realms tie-in, dropping Deadpool into Australia to tackle Ulik and his trolls. It’s a decent start from Skottie Young, Nic Klein, and Jeff Eckleberry with some funny Wade/Blind Al moments and Wade trying to convince the Australian heroes of his worth as an Avenger.

Deathstroke #44 is part one of “RIP”, with Priest, Fernando Pasarin, Ryan Winn, Jeromy Cox, and Willie Schubert kicking it off with Slade’s funeral. Some interesting bits of possibility as to who might pick up the Deathstroke mantle.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Descendent #2 continues this conspiracy-laden thriller from Stephanie Phillips, Evgeniy Bornyakov, Lauren Affe, and Troy Peteri. This one’s a bit heavy on the shadowy organization being shadowy and light on explanation, but there are still some entertaining character moments.

Eclipse #16 brings this series from Zack Kaplan, Giovanni Timpano, Flavio Dispenza, and Troy Peteri to a close. I find it kind of funny that the reason for the solar activity and underlying state of the world aren’t answered, but that’s been part of the through line of this final arc, focusing more on the characters and the heart that keeps people going.

Fallen World #2 continues this wonderful exploration of the new state of 4002 AD by Dan Abnett, Adam Pollina, Ulises Arreola, and Jeff Powell. The threat of Father-possessed Bloodshot in horrifying and the future is looking pretty bleak. Also, I think this is some of the best artwork I have ever seen from Adam Pollina. He’s really giving it his all for this series and it shines through on the page.

Giant Days #51 deals with the fallout of McGraw’s loss as we head towards the end of the series. The shift in behaviour for Esther to more responsibility and adult attitudes also seems to be a sign that John Allison is giving us that the end is near.

The Green Lantern #8 is one of the weirdest Green Lantern/Green Arrow team-ups you’re going to come across. With awesome demons from Liam Sharp.

Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 gives us a trio of tales and a framing story, focusing on the other heroes who were sucked into oblivion in the first issue, and where some of them have ended up now. Great work from all of the creators involved and hope to see them usher more stories of the characters.

Incredible Hulk: Last Call #1 is another of the 80th Anniversary specials, this time reuniting the classic Hulk team of Peter David and Dale Keown for this one-shot. It’s an interesting tale of Bruce wanting to kill himself and an old co-worker of Betty’s trying to talk him out of it.

Justice League #25 concludes “The Sixth Dimension” from Scott Snyder, Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sánchez, and Tom Napolitano. Gorgeous art as always, and an interesting bit of the League being more than the sum of their parts to choose a different way. There’s also a prelude for the “Year of the Villain” even from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Hi-Fi, and Napolitano and it’s a little grim. While they were gone, the world has been doomed.

Meet the Skrulls #5 brings this excellent series to a close, with hints of something even bigger than a Skrull invasion lurking within the Marvel Universe. Robbie Thompson, Niko Henrichon, Laurent Grossat, and Travis Lanham have provided a taut thriller through this series, but also shown that the tightest bonds in the field are really with your family.

Savage Avengers #2 continues slowly bringing together the team in the Savage Land, along with revealing the long time Conan villain pulling the strings. It’s bloody, violent, and great. Mike Deodato Jr. and Frank Martin are making this look gorgeous.

Stronghold #4 goes in some very interesting directions as Michael and Claire escape from the Stronghold’s clutches and go searching for the Apostate. Some absolutely marvellous artwork from Ryan Kelly and Dee Cunniffe, with some great repeated variations on layouts as Michael cycles through different lifetimes.

Uncanny X-Men #19 catches us up with what’s been going on with Emma Frost since her X-Men: Black story across Astonishing X-Men and the beginning of this series, and, well, it’s also bleak. And there’s more death. Also a reminder that the Vanisher’s name is Telford Porter. TELFORD PORTER.

War of the Realms #5 is kind of a mess of pieces, I don’t recommend anyone trying to reconcile appearances and locations in this book with any of the tie-ins, but on its own, it’s one hell of a gathering storm for the finale. Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson are unparalleled here with the artwork. It’s drop dead gorgeous.

Witchblade #14 slips back to the present to deal with what happens after Alex and co. get ported off to the future. I love how Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza, and Troy Peteri are presenting this, rather than just leaving us confused in the future.

Young Justice #6 concludes “Seven Crises” with some answers, kind of, but not any particularly satisfying ones, more just a bunch of hand waving. Which is not to say this isn’t good, Brian Michael Bendis, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Wes Abbott deliver a very entertaining excursion into Gemworld, with some funny moments and great action. It’s just that the questions about how and why any of this is happening or who these versions of the characters are and out of which continuity remain.

Quick Bits:
Abbott #4 gives us the penultimate issue to the series, dropping all the pieces together to put Abbott on the path to discovery what is going on with all the death and paranormal stuff. The layouts from Sami Kavelä just elevates the storytelling to the next level.

Aliens: Dust to Dust #1 is a fairly visceral beginning to this new min-series written and illustrated by Gabriel Hardman (with colours from Rain Beredo). It starts in terror as Maxon begins seeing violence outside his window and finds a facehugger attached to his mother, and just explodes from there with the colony world of LV-871 overrun by xenomorphs.

Avengers #690 brings both “No Surrender” and this volume of Avengers to an end, serving as a coda to the series, tying up some loose ends, saying some goodbyes--especially as many of the X-Men characters seem to be going back home--and setting up some of the things to come. This has been a great story, with some wonderful art along the way, that well-encapsulated this era of the Avengers while presenting a fairly widescreen epic.

Bloodborne #3 is filled will existential dread. Particularly with the idea of that unknown, unseen terror hanging above your head, waiting to pounce. And of monsters being everywhere.

Cyber Force #2 continues the slow burn rebuilding and reintroduction of the team and their antagonists, with this issue mainly focusing on Velocity discovering the extent of her powers and revealing the updated version of Killjoy. Like the first issue, much of the story is similar, but the details get fleshed out a bit more and the look of the characters tends to be a bit different. It does highlight the differences in comics storytelling between today and twenty-five years ago. What used to be told in a handful of panels or a throwaway line now takes half an issue.

Deep Roots #1 is another stellar debut from Vault, with absolutely gorgeous artwork from Val Rodrigues and Triona Farrell. The story...is a bit Swamp Thing-y, but not. It’s strange. Dan Watters excels at strange.

Doctor Strange #389 continues this necessary chunk of the “Damnation” event, revealing how Strange exited the depths of hell in order to get back to Las Vegas. Its structure is a bit odd, given that it’s actually told as a flashback, breaking with how the arc has been presented up until now, and it skips over what actually happens in Damnation #4, but it’s still entertaining. Donny Cates adds quite a few bits of reactive humour and the art from Niko Henrichon continues to be astounding.

Doctor Strange: Damnation #4 concludes the event. I’ve enjoyed it overall, with some great moments spread across the constituent parts, but the main series itself has been told in a fairly oblique manner, leaving important details up to the tie-ins of Doctor Strange and Johnny Blaze. I don’t mind, personally, but if you’re only reading Damnation, it would feel a bit choppy. I am hoping that the tease of more Midnight Sons bears fruit. Some great art again from both Rod Reis and Szymon Kudranski.

Dungeons & Dragons: Evil at Baldur’s Gate #1 returns the adventuring party home and has them scatter almost immediately, leaving Minsc and Boo to find their own misadventure about the city. Being Minsc and Boo-centric, Jim Zub opts for a story that’s a little sillier than usual, but it’s very welcome.

Exiles #2 is a rather fun comic, finishing up the gathering of the team, as they hop from realities under threat from the desiccated corpse version of Galactus that is the Time Eater. The differing realities that Saladin Ahmed is playing with here transcends earlier versions with the inclusion of Wolvie, allowing for a radically different interpretation and style of comics not often included in these kinds of reality hopping stories. It gives a nice bit of comic relief and allows Javier Rodríguez to further flex his artistic muscle. Between stylistic changes, layouts, and panel transitions, this is a damn good looking comic. Rodríguez, Álvaro López, and Chris O’Halloran are making the art as adventurous as the story.

Gasolina #7 returns with Amalia and Randy hiding out and playing house with Amalia’s nephew, who is still somehow alive with one of those alien bug things in him. It’s still kind of weird how Sean Mackiewicz is presenting this mix of oddities with a more standard crime narrative, where the aliens/whatever-they-are are just about the least important thing. It’s a nice approach, drawing out the more “normal” aspects comparatively.

Grass Kings #14 drops one hell of a bombshell in this penultimate issue. Matt Kindt, Tyler & Hilary Jenkins are ensuring that this series goes out on a high note.

Hunt for Wolverine #1 is a pretty good start to this event, even if ultimately the premise of Wolverine missing--when he’s been hopping around the Marvel Universe just missing anyone--is a little ridiculous. I mean, if he still has an Infinity Stone, despite the recent flowchart in Infinity Countdown #2, it makes a bit of sense, but otherwise... Anyway, Charles Soule, David Marquez, and Rachelle Rosenberg put together a great lead story, setting up the mystery of Logan’s missing body, and it remains to be seen how and why he actually came back. The second story, from Soule, Paulo Siquiera, Walden Wong, and Ruth Redmond then essentially sets up the spin-off series with the different teams looking for Wolverine.

Ice Cream Man #4 serves up another cone of seriously strange horror. Like if you made beer-flavoured ice cream and topped it with bits of chocolate-covered grasshopper. This one features an outing between an estranged friend and the friend’s deadbeat dad after his funeral and it just gets more bizarre from there.

Jeepers Creepers #1 is not something I ever expected to see. Although the first two movies were relatively successful, at the very least as cult horror flicks, I would have thought the surprisingly released third film and Victor Salva’s reputation killed the chance of this as a viable property that anyone would want to associate with. But here we are. In any event, Marc Andreyko pens an interesting story. Aside from the nods to the films like the Creeper’s truck, we mainly follow a grad student as he searches for connections between the Creeper and Aztec mythology. Not a bad premise, even if it feels like it’s coming from left field. The art from Kewber Baal, with colours by Jorge Sutil, is also pretty nice.

Kill or Be Killed #18 takes a bit of a sidestep as we head toward the series’ conclusion. I love when Ed Brubaker starts laying out the steps in a crime, or in a case as it were, and this issue follows the task force assigned to solving Dylan’s murders, especially in the wake of the death of the copycat they closed the case with. It’s interesting how the clues are presented and followed and as usual Sean Phillips and Elizabeth Breitweiser make it look gorgeous.

KINO #5 begins the second arc, changing tone a bit as the series takes a darker turn with ChrisCross taking over the art duties here. Gone are the throwback styles of old comics and now we’ve got some stranger things as Alistair Meath has realized that he’s in some sort of simulation or...something. It’s an interesting shift, even with the introduction of Meath’s family in the real world, as the series seems to take on a more realistic, and slightly darker, tone, even though the real world sequences aren’t much different from what Joe Casey wrote in the previous issues.

The Mighty Thor #706 is a beautiful farewell to the Lady Thor, with some drop dead gorgeous artwork from Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson. Moon Knight #194 features some really nice guest art from Ty Templeton as Max Bemis pens a tale about a particularly dark period of Marc’s childhood. It’s a good single issue story dealing with some very heavy subject matter.

Pathfinder: Spiral of Bones #2 features some really nice art from Tom Garcia and Morgan Hickman, as the story shifts to Valeros’ predicament of being dead and being mistaken for a particularly nasty individual. I enjoy how Crystal Frasier is expanding upon the Pathfinder concepts for the afterlife and Valeros’ situation is fairly funny, even if dire.

Sacred Creatures #6 was worth the wait. I know this series doesn’t get a lot of press, and often slips its schedule, but what Pablo Raimondi and Klaus Janson are crafting here is some pretty heady stuff, with reinterpretations of biblical epics and an entirely different take on the Nephilim and the Seven Deadly Sins (of which we learn there was an eighth this issue, Vanity, although vanity is usually just an example of pride). It’s good, it’s dense, and it’s beautifully illustrated.

It’s a fun set of stories, also serving as a bit of bridge to the forthcoming Cosmic Ghost Rider mini-series.

X-Men Blue #26 unleashes more of Miss Sinister’s Mothervine plan across the world with secondary and tertiary mutations occurring, along with old depowered X-Men regaining powers. This feels bigger than something that’s just confined to one X-book, which is a testament to the level of storytelling Cullen Bunn is bringing here. While there are timeline quibbles, especially with Venomized going on currently that has already brought the original five back to Earth, it is entertaining to see Polaris’ new team in action.
