i finally got the energy to finish coding this damn thing!! all the actual code is done, i just have to replace all the placeholder assets which i will do later (and obviously all the images in the gallery are placeholder too for testing purposes lol)
i'm really happy with how i handled this site - it's incredibly dynamic and easy to add to/change in the future. no inline CSS & can easily add new pages if i ever need to without having to copy/paste code or change all pages at once & timestamps are dynamic based on user timezone, the pool of pokemon in the captcha automatically update based on a text/image database so i never have to touch the HTML or JS or anything, and the gallery also automatically updates based on a text/image database so i never have to touch the HTML or JS there either. it'll be really easy to fill in the gallery with new themes in the future because i literally just add the information for all the submissions into the database and that's it i'm done lmao. everything seems to look good and function on mobile resolution also. wheee
look at my database for the gallery i'm very happy with it LOL
the HTML for the gallery page is literally just this because the entire thing is handled by javascript 🫡

✨ Fic Writing Review 2023 ✨
thanks for the tag @non-plutonian-druid!
the actual format of this game is this post but i rearranged it a bit so that i could hide my extremely long list of fics under a cut
Fandom fic events 2023
Murderbot Diaries New Year Gift Exchange
Yuletide Draft Dodgers
Murderbot AUpril Collection (open and accepts submissions)
2023 Aspec Murderbot Diaries
2023 PresAugust

Botober 2023
Upcoming 2024
Events:
i'm doing the Murderbot Diaries New Year Gift Exchange (2024) :3
Perhaps i'll post something for the annual 3/3 for Three collection idk (this collection is open and accepts submissions, and it spikes on March 3rd of each year)
WIPs:
Gift exchange fic
Absolute monster of a nullverse!network effect AU fic. i'm trying so hard to get draft 1 of this beast finished it's been beating my ass for over a year but i'm gonna Get It
Continue Via Solitude updates.
a 5+1 ASR bad ends fic that explores some meta shit. namely trust, forgiveness, and sci-fi horror genre vs canon.
Words and fics 2023
let's find out just how cringe (fun) i've been on ao3. i'm like. jeebus creebus i've posted a lot this year huh.
105,486 words of fan fiction. all of it murderbot. let's look at them going right down the statistics page (default sorted by hits, tho it gets kind of messy at the end with and i got lazy):
30,336 words of Via Solitude, an All Systems Red AU where murderbot has to do wilderness survival.
~5k words that's just a repost of Threat As Greeting, except with fresh interactive CSS effects.
3,346 words top 3 SURPRISING things you didn't know about the SECUNIT who pulled you out of an INCINERATOR (2023 gift exchange) outsider POV from the characters featured in Wells' pre-canon short story
1,502 words Aspec Drabbles (for the Aspec Murderbot Diaries event) it lot of fun to work with strict 100-word drabbles.
13,837 words References NULL: Logs From Project Murderbot [nullverse] the most purely concentrated angst/whump from the nullverse series yet. handle with care or skip it.
6,552 words How To Go On A Camping Trip - a guide for anxious SecUnits who are bad at vacationing (2023 gift exchange) i really liked this one tbh. fun standalone.
2,488 words Improve Your Baby AI With This One Weird Trick! (2023 gift exchange) my personal fic-titling theme for the gift exchange was "clickbait."
7,875 Alien Refuge (AUpril inspired) This is a Homestuck crossover, and reportedly the first time multiple people willingly interacted with homestuck-affiliated content, and they liked it. gottem. it's also pretty good, i did a nice job injecting homestuckism tone into the murderbot narrative style If I Do Say So Myself.
911 words No Comment: Shut Up And Dance [nullverse] fluff and humor. tfw your secunit friend (murderbot) is crashing in your living room and you (dr. ratthi) have insomnia.
2,922 words MetaMorphoSys (AUpril inspired) listen i NEED the next big fandom trend to be an AU world where people metamorphose inside cocoons. hear me out. HEAR ME OUT. in this fic we take the fridge horror of canon murderbot diaries and make it visceral, wet, biological, and ethically Even Worse. get yr Amena emotions also.
0 words SecUnit Technician Bingo Card it's funny. idk.
3,438 words nullverse reference sheet [nullverse bonus content] self indulgent AU notes
2,290 words Systems: Splorch [nullverse bonus content] a friend of mine said "how long until we get a fic with #oviposition in the murderbot diaries ao3?" i took the answer to that question into my own two capable hands at 7.5 hours. you're welcome.
2,562 words Artifacts NULL: Fire Festival [nullverse] slice-of-life friend times with nostalgia vibes. how far we've come.jpg.
388 words Entries shared by the Society for Conservation of Feed Artifacts (SCFA) (created for TMBD in-universe robot art gallery, which is an open collection that accepts any submissions!) wait this reminds me i have one more to post. i'll get to it.
9,314 words in 31 fics written for (Botober 2023) daily prompts. turned out to be a fun exercise and exploration of bot culture tho it took me longer than the month of october to finish.
4 fanarts of fics that i liked.
26 fanbindings where i printed out and made booklets out of fics that i liked.
2 translations.
3,080 words Refrain [nullverse bonus content] if you're unfamiliar with my Brand this will sound unhinged. if you are familiar with my Brand you know by now that i have a knack for taking literally Anything and treating it with tender loving care and unexpected deft so this doesn't even surprise you. tl;dr it's porn of two bots having a deeply OSHA-unapproved Fuck Session, there's no genitals involved, and it's tagged #Vivisection. it's pretty good if you're into robots and perhaps mild gore.

Exploring Webflow’s Pros and Cons
Did you know that 68% of website visitors will leave a site if it’s not mobile-friendly or loads too slowly? With Webflow, you can easily create a site that’s fast, responsive, and visually stunning.
But is it the right choice for you? Let’s dive into what Webflow developers have to say regarding the pros and cons of Webflow to help you decide.
What is Webflow?
Design, functionality, and… No code at all. Webflow is a versatile tool. It combines all it takes to make modern websites without any programming expertise.
Here's a more specific breakdown of what it has to offer:
Clean code, hosting, and other technical complexities are handled by Webflow — you can focus on creative freedom. A business website, a personal portfolio, or a full-scale ecommerce store — the tool of this kind has it all.
Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks of Webflow CMS
Below, I’ll explore its main pros and cons through examples and insights to help you decide whether it’s the right choice for your next project.
Pros of Webflow CMS
Clean Code and SEO Optimization
Benefit: Webflow generates clean code. That results in perfect page loading speed and SEO-friendly structures like meta tags and meta descriptions.
Fact: Websites built with Webflow score high on Google Lighthouse for performance and accessibility.
Design Flexibility & Custom Animations
Benefit: Webflow’s design tool offers unmatched flexibility. That means creators can craft custom animations and interactive animations.
Example: A SaaS company can use Webflow to showcase their features through scroll-based animations to improve user engagement.
No-code Platform for Custom Websites
Benefit: Webflow allows you to build websites with a drag-and-drop interface. It’s perfect for those without coding knowledge.
Example: A freelance graphic designer without HTML skills can easily create a portfolio with interactive elements like animations and galleries.
Fact: Over 3.5 million designers and teams use Webflow platforms for diverse projects.
Ecommerce and Scalability
Benefit: Webflow’s e-commerce plan allows businesses to create scalable online stores. Enterprise plans cater to larger organizations that might need some advanced features.
Example: A small retail shop can start with Webflow Ecommerce and scale as sales grow.
Integrated Hosting and Free SSL Certificate
Benefit: Hosting is built-in. Besides, Webflow offers a free SSL certificate for secure connections and seamless live site management.
Example: An entrepreneur launching a business website can go live without the hassle of external hosting.
Responsive Designs for All Devices
Benefit: Webflow offers responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile without extra effort.
Example: A blog post or landing page designed in Webflow looks great on any screen size.
Cons of Webflow CMS
Costly for Smaller Projects
Challenge: Compared to other platforms, Webflow’s pricing is higher. Its free plan is limited. Features like form submissions require paid plans.
Example: A hobby blogger might find it expensive to upgrade for custom domains and more storage.
Dependence on Webflow Hosting
Challenge: Sites built with Webflow can only be hosted on its platform. That limits flexibility for developers wanting external hosting options.
Example: Businesses looking for unique server configurations might find this restrictive.
Limited Plugins and Third-party Integrations
Challenge: Unlike WordPress, Webflow lacks an extensive plugin ecosystem.
Example: Integrating advanced marketing tools often requires custom code or third-party services.
Steep Learning Curve
Challenge: While the platform is a no-code tool, mastering its advanced features like custom animations or CMS setup requires a basic understanding of design principles.
Example: Beginners may struggle to understand Webflow’s box model or advanced CSS capabilities.
Insight: Webflow provides extensive tutorials, but time investment is necessary.
No Backend User Roles
Challenge: Managing multiple sites with varying access levels for editors and admins is more complex compared to traditional content management systems.
Example: A team working on a business website might face challenges in assigning granular permissions.
Table: Pros and Cons at a Glance
Conclusion
Webflow CMS offers powerful tools for content management systems and website creation, but it comes with trade-offs like pricing and a steeper learning curve.
Use this checklist to evaluate if Webflow CMS aligns with your needs and goals.
1. Your Technical Skills and Team Setup
Do you have a basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and design tools, or a team with coding knowledge?
Are you comfortable working with a drag-and-drop interface for design?
Will your team benefit from a no-code platform to streamline development?
2. Your Project Requirements
Are you creating a business website, landing pages, or a blog post series?
Do you need advanced features like custom animations, interactive elements, or an e-commerce plan?
Does your project involve managing multiple sites or an enterprise-level solution?
3. Budget and Scalability
Does your budget allow for Webflow's pricing tiers, including free plans and enterprise plans?
Do you require features like form submissions or a free SSL certificate included in paid plans?
Will your site grow to need custom code integration or scalable content management?
4. Your Design and Branding Needs
Are you looking for a design tool that prioritizes flexibility and visual control?
Do you plan to create interactive animations or custom animations that enhance user experience?
Is maintaining a clean code output important for performance and SEO?
5. Your Time and Learning Curve
Do you have the time to overcome Webflow’s learning curve?
Are you seeking a platform that allows you to create websites faster than traditional coding?
Will you benefit from Webflow’s templates for a quick start on your next project?
If most of your answers align with Webflow’s features, it might be your perfect match. No? Explore other content management systems.

the submit button (part 1)
let's start with something simple!
at the top bar; you'll see this dropdown menu (without the multi-images button unless you have premium). but what do these even mean??
let's start with the character button.
when you hit the character button, you will be greeted by this.
at the top, you can add an avatar to your character. you can crop the image to fit properly, and this will not add the image into your character's gallery (the images attached to a character).
next, you can choose what type of post it will be.
character: a regular character! use this for your ocs or for other misc. stuff.
html/css: avoid picking this one unless you're posting a character or user code that people can use for free or for cash! css is similar, but it adds a specific theme to your profile (you can only use css if you have premium).
resource: this is generally used for things like collections of gifs, backgrounds, props, bases, etc.!
ad: pick this if you're advertising something! such as commissions, ychs, a character for offer, a character purge (this is when someone is putting a bunch of their ocs up for offer), etc.
the name part is self-explanatory. type the name of your character in there! (or a temporary name, such as "TBN" which means "to be named".)
after this, you can add your character to a folder. we won't worry about that just yet!
now we get to privacy settings.
public: anyone can view this character.
only logged in users: anyone with an account can view this character.
only authorised users: any person that you authorise can see this character. you can do this by going to someone's profile and pressing the "authorise" button!
only certain lists: authorised users that you add to a list can view this character. (which you can create here!)
only me: only you can view this character.
you can add tags to characters as well to either make them show up in search results or to sort on your profile! tags are 100% optional.
then you can choose whether your character appears on the front page/in search results. do whatever makes you comfortable with this!
with fields you can add extra quick information to your character! such as age, pronouns, sexuality, etc.
now you can write a description for your character! i suggest you hold off on doing that until you post the character; as the submission form times out after an hour-a couple of hours.
the css and advanced tabs are not super important, but in the advanced tab you can toggle whether this specific character can get favourites/comments or not.
for designer credits, you credit who created the character. even if you designed the character, you need to properly credit the creator of the oc. if you don't know or can't remember, go to "off-site creator" and type in a fake link. this could be something like https://i.forgot.
if you credit an on-site creator, they will have to manually accept the credit! until they do that; the creator credit will say "unverified".
finally we come to upload image. as it says in the image, this is optional, but i think it's still nice to do! personally i like to upload all of my character images by date, but you do not have to do this.
clicking on the tab shows you this. here you can upload the actual image, add a caption, change watermark settings, add warnings, other characters, and credit the artist of the image. crediting the artist works almost the same as the creator credit, but they do not have to manually accept it.
for the watermark itself, you will have a few different options. "custom" is my own watermark that i manually uploaded! i will explain that in another post.
each watermark setting (on public)
full size: anyone can view the full unwatermarked image! this is best to use for refs.
watermarked: the default. your image will have a watermark on it.
thumbnail: when someone clicks on the image, they will only see what's in the thumbnail at a lower resolution.
hidden: public viewers cannot see this image.
nsfw/tagging settings (i suggest you read the rules for more in-depth descriptions and examples! properly tagging your stuff is cool!)
sexual content
anyone with their age set to <18 cannot post images with these filters.
mild sexual content: stuff like visible arousement (clothed), fetish art, anything that implies sexual activity. you could also use this for heavily suggestive art if you wanted to!
explicit sexual content: porn. anything you would classify as adults only
nudity: nonsexual nudity! visible (unaroused) genitalia goes here. nipples and butts (unless very exaggerated) do not need to be tagged.
gore: the rules officially say "Any depiction of internal organs, viscera, visibly broken bones, or freshly severed limbs or body parts"; but a lot of people also include stuff like huge amounts of blood here. whatever you feel should be tagged!
sensitive content: ticking this box lets you type in something specific! this can be used with other tags to help you describe what's being tagged.
lastly, adding other characters! the image you're uploading will attach to the character you're uploading by default. to add other characters; you press the "add character" button.
doing that makes this pop up! you should now press "select", and then navigate to the folder the character you're looking for is in so you can then click on them. you can also add other people's characters! you can also search by character id, but that's a bit tedious imo. (you need to go to the character's profile, copy the numbers in their url, and then paste them into the text box that comes up.)
here, you type a username, press the arrow, then go through that person's characters and pick the one you're looking for!
i'm gonna try to do one of these every couple days (this took me like an hour straight to do). i hope this helps and happy character creating!! :]
#toyhouse tips#the basics#long post#like very long i'm sorry i made this so long#if anyone has any corrections please let me know in the replies and i'll edit this!!

Duda Review: How a Platform Can Help Scale Your Web Design Agency
With so many available web design platforms out in the market, choosing the right one to help you scale your web design business can be overwhelming. You’ll need to consider several essential factors like the platform’s collaboration features, usability and other functionalities, to make the internal and external collaboration for your web design agency as seamless as possible. Although there might not be a perfect web design platform for your business (or any business for that matter), the best platform fit is one that answers your most burning needs and gives your agency the flexibility and efficiency to build and scale over time. This is exactly where Duda shines. At a glance, Duda is an easy-to-use, feature-rich, and powerful (but intuitive) web design platform for agencies who are looking to scale their operations. In this review, we’re going to take a closer look at the platform’s key features and help you assess whether or not Duda is the right solution to help you grow your web design agency. Let’s get on with it, then.
Overview
Duda is a web design platform for designers, agencies, hosting companies, digital publishers, SaaS companies and more — whether you’re a small scale business or a large enterprise. With powerful client management and team collaboration features, the platform streamlines the process of managing the websites you’re building for your clients — allowing for seamless collaboration among all parties involved in the website creation process. Duda offers powerful features that give you the necessary tools you need to create your clients’ websites quickly, collaboratively and powerfully. Let’s take a more in-depth look at the platform’s features to see whether or not Duda is for you.
1. Website Builder
Duda’s responsive website builder tool lets you create your clients’ websites with as little coding as possible. However, if you do want to edit any of the JavaScript, HTML or CSS source code generated using the builder’s drag-and-drop interface, Duda can do that too. And if your team is even more technically savvy than that, you can use the platform’s advanced APIs to generate designs powered by dynamic data. One of the platform’s key features is a library of customizable website templates, which makes it easier and faster for your agency to design and create multiple websites at once. Customization and Libraries You can choose a design from the platform’s available templates and start building your clients’ websites from that. If you’re looking for a specific website “look,” you can search for it using keywords, colors, or by category.
Each element in these customizable templates can be modified to your liking. You can click on the section or website element you want to edit, and you’ll see the tools you need to customize your headers, footers, background images, buttons, texts, and more.
The website builder feature also lets you customize the layout of your template, edit the content, add pages, widgets, and even a store and a blog.
Additionally, Duda lets you save, duplicate and share your own templates so you and your team can easily repurpose your work — which helps you build future websites and website elements faster and more efficiently. Website Comments Feature One of the best collaboration features that Duda offers, especially during your design process, is the Website Comments feature. With this feature, you can do away with the hassle of having to use various communication platforms when sending messages to your clients or your teammates. Considering how much back and forth messages are often sent when creating a website, Duda’s comments feature is a huge time-saver. Everyone can just log into their Duda account, check out the website being built, and see the comments made on each website element — right there, in context.
This feature speeds up your collaboration process, since everyone in your team can see the comments made by the client on the website element. This means none of you will have to delegate tasks to each other, which often leads to confusion and miscommunication.
An email notification will also be sent automatically to the users involved in creating the website — both the client and the internal team — for every new and resolved comment, which encourages quick responses from everyone involved. The comments feature helps you avoid miscommunication throughout the design process. Not only that, but it also ensures that instructions and changes are followed accordingly — leading to a more streamlined communication process.
2. Team Collaboration
Having a web design platform that’s conducive for teamwork will help your team run like clockwork. This, of course, can lead to timely submissions and better client experience — which ultimately helps cultivate the sense that your web design agency is reliable from your clients’ perspective. With Duda’s team features, your internal collaboration will be more streamlined and efficient. Permissions Duda lets you segment your team members into groups, such as admin, designers, sales, etc., and set permissions that allow them to access specific functions and features. For instance, you can use the preset Designer Group and set permissions that allow your team members to create, delete, or edit sites, manage clients, and more.
You can also create your own custom group and set up the permissions and add new team members to your existing groups. Overall, the feature makes it easier for you to manage your team members as they work on several projects at once, or as they work with different members on completely separate websites. Team Sections Dashboard Duda’s Team Sections dashboard lets you see all the sections that you and your team members created. This collaborative space allows you to view all the Sections at a glance and quickly search for all your predesigned side elements and pages, using filters.
This feature also lets you edit existing or create new Sections without having to open the website for you to modify the design and settings. Plus, you can duplicate your Sections if you want to make a few tweaks and build on the old one to create a new section. With the Team Section dashboard, you can optimize your teamwork, save time on designing new websites, and increase your productivity, and scale your business.
3. Client Management
One of the challenges that web design agencies face is how to make working with clients more efficient and less time-consuming. With Duda’s client management features, this can be a much easier process for your web design agency. Client Permissions You can set permissions for your clients by clicking on the Client Management dropdown in your dashboard, and you’ll be taken to the Users & Permission page. You can set up different client permissions, such as site-specific access, full editing, content editing, developer mode, ecommerce, and publish permissions. Although your clients cannot create or delete websites, these permissions give them a level of access to modify specific areas in the site and perform certain actions.
Once you add your clients and give them access to your sites, they’ll receive instructions through email on how to go about it. This feature helps your web design agency work faster and more efficiently with your multiple clients, and lessen the time spent on waiting for client feedback on your designs or on your clients waiting for you to make small revision requests. White Label Duda offers a White Label feature that lets you add your brand’s logo and colors to areas of the platform and allow your customers to edit their websites without knowing that you’re using Duda. Using the White Label Editor, you can include your branding on the client login screen, client dashboard, the website builder, the template gallery, and more.
Plus, you can even send your clients emails with your branding to prompt them about automated weekly or monthly stats or to ask them to log in to their accounts. With this feature, your brand image and level of credibility immediately shoots up. As soon as your client sees your branding attached to the platform, they will feel impressed knowing that your company “owns” such a robust and feature-packed platform. This inspires client confidence, making it easier for them to feel good about continuing to work with your agency.
The Bottom Line
Duda offers the necessary tools and features that make the process of designing and publishing websites for your clients quicker and more efficient. With the platform’s intuitive website builder interface, team collaboration, and client management features, your internal and external web design process will be streamlined as a result. A roundup of stuff I consumed this week. Published weekly(ish).

Whoever your graphic design portfolio site is aimed at, you have to remember that people’s time and attention is limited. Employers, to take one example, may look at dozens of portfolios in the space of 10 minutes. So you only have a few seconds to really grab their attention and enthuse them.

Paying for more than 3,500 daily drinks for six years, it turns out, is expensive. The NIH would need more funding—and soon, a team stepped up to the plate. The Foundation of the NIH, a little-known 20-year-old non-profit that calls on donors to support NIH science, was talking to alcohol corporations. By the fall of 2014, the study was relying on the industry for “separate contributions to the Foundation of the NIH beyond what the NIAAA could afford,” as Mukamal put it in an e-mail to a prospective collaborator. Later that year, Congress encouraged the NIH to sponsor the study, but lawmakers didn’t provide any money. Five corporations—Anheuser-Busch InBev, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Heineken, and Carlsberg—have since provided a total of $67 million. The foundation is seeking another $23 million, according to its director of development, Julie Wolf-Rodda.

When Starbucks (SBUX) announced that it was closing its Teavana tea line and wanted to shutter all of its stores, mall operator Simon Property Group (SPG) countered with a lawsuit. Simon cited in part the effect the store closures might have on other mall tenants.

Here are two facts: 1) Throughout the tail end of Matt Lauer’s tenure at NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America beat it in the ratings, and 2) In the two weeks since Lauer was kicked to the curb for sexual misconduct and replaced by Hoda Kotb, Today’s viewership has surpassed GMA’s by a considerable margin.

After the trap has snapped shut, the plant turns it into an external stomach, sealing the trap so no air gets in or out. Glands produce enzymes that digest the insect, first the exoskeleton made of chitin, then the nitrogen-rich blood, which is called hemolyph.

In order to create a candlestick chart, you must have a data set that contains open, high, low and closevalues for each time period you want to display. The hollow or filled portion of the candlestick is called “the body” (also referred to as “the real body”). The long thin lines above and below the body represent the high/low range and are called “shadows” (also referred to as “wicks” and “tails”). The high is marked by the top of the upper shadow and the low by the bottom of the lower shadow.

The object in question is ‘Oumuamua, an asteroid from another star system currently zipping past Jupiter at about 196,000 miles per hour, too fast to be trapped by the sun’s gravitational pull. I get what you’re doing. Really, I do. You’re trying to shit on people’s musical tastes to either appear more well-versed in music than them or you just want to see the shocked look on people’s faces as you besmirch their favorite band. The font the menu is written in can convey similar messages; for instance an italic typeface conveys a perception of quality. But using elaborate fonts that are hard to read could also have another effect – it could alter how the food itself tastes.
A study conducted by researchers in Switzerland found that a wine labelled with a difficult-to-read script was liked more by drinkers than the same wine carrying a simpler typeface. Spence’s own research has also found that consumers often associate rounder typefaces with sweeter tastes, while angular fonts tend to convey a salty, sour or bitter experience.

HOW TO ADD CUSTOM GOOGLE FORMS TO YOUR STATIC SITE?
Websites created with static site generators like Jekyll or Hugo are on the rise. Their popularity is not surprising. They’re fast and secure, as there’s no data on the server side. The web server builds and serves web pages on the fly. You don’t have to worry about databases and server-side security.
office setup is the best programming which is exhaustively utilized in globe .
It is a shocking association that causes you release your best contemplations, complete things, and stay related on the go.for more subtleties visit: office.com/setup today.
You can write your posts in Markdown or HTML that gets rendered nicely with the help of templating engines (Jekyll uses Liquid, while Hugo uses Go Templates). Everything is fine until you want to add dynamic functionality to your static site, such as a Contact form. But, you don’t have to worry, as you can use an external backend like Google Forms to implement such features.
USE GOOGLE FORMS TO EMBED A CONTACT FORM
Incoming data collected by forms need to be processed by a server and stored in a database. You can find many online tutorials that recommend Formspree as a free form backend for static websites. However, the free version of Formspree sometimes bumps into issues like not forwarding form submissions to your email address. As an alternative, you can use Google Forms to add custom forms to your Jekyll, Hugo, or another static site.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to create and add a Contact form to a static HTML page (that you can later convert to a Jekyll or Hugo template). However, Google Forms is not limited to Contact forms; you can create any kind of custom forms or surveys with it. Your users won’t even know that you’re using Google Forms, as the form you create can be completely integrated with your site’s design!
Google Forms Homepage
1. CREATE A NEW FORM ON GOOGLE’S PLATFORM
Sign in to the Google Forms platform with your Google account. You can either start a new form from scratch or use Google’s
pre-made templates. As Google has a fairly good Contact form template, we’ll use that rather than starting with a blank template.
Click the template called “Contact Information” in the Template Gallery on top of the page.
Google Forms Template Gallery
The default “Contact information” template has three required fields (Name, Email, Address) and two optional ones (Phone number, Comments). We’ll keep Name and Email but replace the rest with an optional Subject and a required Message field. You can delete any field you don’t want to use by clicking the little recycle bin icon that shows up after you click on the field.
Google Forms Delete Field
Then, you can add the new input fields by clicking the + icon in the floating menu on the right. You can choose from various input types such as short answer, checkbox, dropdown, paragraph, file upload, and others.
For our custom Subject field, we use the short answer input type. For Message, we choose paragraph as input type, that allows users to enter a multi-line message. We also set the latter to required using the little switcher at the bottom of the input box.
Google Forms Add New Form Fields
By default, Google Forms require respondents to sign into their Google accounts before they fill in the form. However, we don’t want this behavior when we embed the form into our website. So, click the gear icon next to the Send button on the top of the page to access the Settings and uncheck the “Limit to 1 response” option.
Google Forms Remove Required Login
Save your settings and your Google Form is done. You can test it by copying-pasting the URL into another browser where you are not logged into your Google Account. Here, you can fill in the form with test data.
Your test message will show up in the Responses tab where you can decide what to do with each response (download, print, delete, etc.). Google Forms Test Message
2. CREATE A SIMILAR FORM ON YOUR OWN SITE
Now, you need to mirror the Google Form you created in the previous step so that it can forward data from your website to the
Google backend. Create a basic HTML form with the same form fields: Name, Email, Subject, and Message.
<form action="" method="post"> <label>Name*</label> <input type="text" placeholder="Name*" name="" required> <label>Email Address*</label> <input type="email" placeholder="Email address*" name="" required> <label>Subject</label> <input type="text" placeholder="Subject" name=""> <label>Message*</label> <textarea rows="5" placeholder="Message*" name="" required></textarea> <button type="submit">Send</button> </form>
The HTML doesn’t have to be exactly the same as Google’s, but it needs to have exactly the same form fields. You can add your own CSS classes to the form so that it’ll match your site’s design. It’ll be the name and action fields that will tie your on-site form to the Google backend.
3. ADD NAME AND ACTION VALUES TO YOUR ON-SITE FORM
Google uses custom name and action values to identify each form. The action attribute belongs to the <form> tag, while the name attributes belong to the input fields. So, you need to find these custom values and add it to the HTML.
Log out of Google (or use a different browser), as if you stay logged in it’ll be hard to do the code inspection (Google adds a lot of extra stuff to logged-in users). Load your Google Form using the form’s URL and inspect it using your browser’s developer tools. In Firefox, you can do that by right-clicking the form and clicking the “Inspect Element” option. In Chrome, you need to choose the “Inspect” option after right-clicking the element.
You need to find the <form> tag in the HTML inspector and copy the value of the action attribute into your custom HTML.
Inspect Custom Google Form
You need to do the same thing with your four input fields, too. But now, you don’t have to copy the action attribute but the name attribute of each input field.
Inspect Google Forms Input Fields
Insert the custom action and name values into your HTML:
<form action="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/..." method="post">
<label>Name*</label>
<input type="text" placeholder="Name*" name="entry.895563655" required>
<label>Email Address*</label>
<input type="email" placeholder="Email address*" name="entry.772189125" required>
<label>Subject</label>
<input type="text" placeholder="Subject" name="entry.203645991">
<label>Message*</label>
<textarea rows="5" placeholder="Message*" name="entry.190021963" required></textarea>
<button type="submit">Send</button>
</form>
Now, your on-site form is bound to the Google backend. You can test it by entering some test data into your form. Sign back
to Google Forms and check if your test response has arrived.
Google Forms Second Test
4. REDIRECT TO A CUSTOM THANK YOU PAGE
While doing the test, you’ve surely noticed that your site has redirected the user to Google’s default thank you page. If you’d rather send your respondents to your custom thank you page add the following code to the top of your form, right before the <form> tag:
<script type="text/javascript">var submitted=false;</script>
<iframe name="hidden_iframe" id="hidden_iframe" style="display:none;"onload="if(submitted) {window.location='thankyou.html';}"></iframe>
<form action="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/..."
method="post" target="hidden_iframe" onsubmit="submitted=true;">...</form>
You need to add the path to your custom thank you page as a value of the window.location() property (it’s ‘thankyou.html’ in the example above).
Note that you also have to add the target=”hidden_iframe” and onsubmit=”submitted=true;” attributes to the <form> tag.
5. CONFIGURE YOUR FORM SETTINGS
You can further adjust your form settings to better manage your incoming responses. For example, you can get email notifications for each new submission.
Navigate to the Responses tab, click the three-dot icon, and check the “Get email notifications for new responses” option. It will send an email notification to the email tied to your Google account (usually a Gmail address) whenever a new respondent submits your Contact form.
Google Forms Get Email Notifications
You can also collect your responses in a Google Spreadsheet. To do so, select the “Select response destination” and specify the spreadsheet that should collect the data (or create a new one). You can download the responses as a .csv file or print them with a click, too.
WRAPPING UP
Static websites are excellent for anyone who needs a simple web presence but doesn’t want to use a CMS like WordPress or pay for hosting. With external backends, you can also add dynamic features to your static site.
Google Forms provide you with a free solution to embed a custom Contact form to your website. If you want to take a step further in form building, read our tips on how to build better Contact forms, too. And, if you’d rather stick to dynamic sites, don’t miss out our guide on how to increase server security, either.

Welp, I think I finally beat Wordpress into submission. The thing I had yesterday was kinda glitzy but also absolute crap from a design perspective because of how the widgets were set up by the theme designers.
I finally ended up with Vantage theme (free), modified with custom CSS through the Siteorigin CSS editor (which has a wysiwyg element to it.) There are jetpack and siteorigin widgets throughout, and I used siteorigin’s pagebuilder.
My major criteria were:
Dark, thin header at the top, with everything aligned properly and no weird gaps, with the important bits of information easily readable.
Big splashy hero image or gallery (ended up being a gallery, was easier, idek, metasliders ftw, pretty happy with it now that I’ve made the images all the same size.) @lysikan the animation is pretty slow and not frequent, but the image does change.
Well organized, coherent, uncluttered body section
Tidy sidebars
Customizable color scheme because I have to stare at this thing a lot and my eyes get tired.
Links to my social media, all my writing projects and Youtube.
Clean blog page that has a blog and a sidebar and not a lot of crap.
Unobtrusive sharing buttons on posts.
Google Translate integration
Not boring
Not unnecessarily busy
Accessible (still have a little work to do on this, the menus are still too small and I don’t know why but can fix it in CSS later.)
On my computer, the whole front page is even at the corners of every section at 100%. (This isn’t strictly necessary but it made me happy.)
Anyhoodle, I think I did it?
#Mine#web design#steep learning curve#the problem with web design is that I only have to do it very infrequently and by the time I have to do it again everything is obsolete#fucking wordpress#yo it's a blog#it no longer looks like it was put together by hipster monkeys throwing bowls of spaghetti widgets at a dartboard
