thoughts on cuvier 🔥
don't have much to add to the extant literature here honestly; i think outram's monograph on him is over-apologetic but she's also written some papers that are very helpful for anyone trying to read his éloges as documents produced in specific social circumstances and serving particular ideological ends wrt the status of scientific institutions and savants. i mean look cuvier was a major force in shaping scientific conceptions of race but so were his transformist / monogeneist colleagues; singling out cuvier on this count tends to do some pretty insidious work obscuring the role of the larger french scientific establishment in early 19th century conceptions of race, physical antrhopology, &c. ig worth noting also that cuvier's influence on lyell and indirectly on c darwin is a major reason for the distortions of the darwin industry on lamarck to this day, & this is also a matter of cuvier's political agenda & desire to claim professional prestige in addition to personal career safety by subsuming natural history into what the state perceived as an acceptably apolitical epistemological framework. this is complex tho because ofc species transformation is not inherently liberatory politics either so

Cryptid of the Day: Cuvier’s Kinglet
Description: In 1812, John James Aubudon collected a new species of Kinglet in Pennsylvania, which he called Cuvier’s Kinglet. Yet after including it in his book, Ornithological Biography, no one else saw another Cuvier’s Kinglet, though Aubudon never gave up locating another specimen.
