-The first dad!Jin content was done about a year or two ago so let's touch back down on that in case anyone has forgotten! Again, Jin is the best dad ever on top of being the best spouse. Ever since Jun was born (or adopted), she'd had him in his corner at all times. Should she ever need anything in the world, he'll be there without question for her. She is in fact the center of his entire world...or dare I say his universe!

-On top of everything else, she's very spoiled but lacks a nasty attitude you'd expect to come along with it thankfully. He's been trying to take it down a notch for a very long time, and is just now managing to learn how to say no to her. Of course it crushes every bit of him to do so, but he knows it's important to be done occasionally. One of the things he's been wrestling with is her altering her appearance at such a young age.

-Jun has budded from a silly and curious 2 year old to an independent 4 year old with a big voice. She speaks her little mind and doesn't lack any confidence no matter the situation at hand. So that's why when she came home from school in a gloomy mood, you were admittedly both worried sick about her. With some careful prying you were able to get a good handle on what happened. There was a new little girl in her class today and supposedly the kid was very popular with the others. Her defining trait you ask? The rainbow colored dye hair.

-So with a kids this young it's understandable everyone would be excited to see hair like that. It was a long night after you'd put Jun to bed. You were the one that tried to convince Jin to let her go through with it and man was he stubborn as hell with you for the first time since dating. He was concerned about the chemicals or the dangers of doing it. On top of that, he didn't want he to lose confidence in her natural features at such a young age or become obsessed with having to change herself for the approval of others. "She doesn't need tom change her hair. It's already two toned." He referred to her natural singular blonde streak she possessed.

-After pulling out every single tactic you had to use against him (yes...that too) you were finally able to convince him to let you dye her hair. The very next day was a Saturday and the weekend. You and Jun had went to the store to find some non-toxic and kid friendly hair dye along with a few cute accessories and some new shoes too. You'd returned home and kissed Jin on the cheek as a thank you for letting you do it. He had to admit it made his heart flutter when he watched his daughter rush past him into the bathroom to eagerly go through with the process.

-When she'd emerged she seemed even more confident than ever before. He sighed a bit of relief to notice it didn't seem all that bad either. She'd chosen a half black half grey dye job because apparently it reminded her of 'daddy's mask' (which obviously made his heart swell with warmth all over again for his little girl. You'd decided Monday to let him pick her up from school so he could get whatever details on her day she would give him. It seemed to be the right choice since he'd come home smiling more widely than her. There wasn't a thing in the world that could bring him down when he knows his child is happy.

(Oh anon things are a little rough but this ask was sent in a while back so it's when we didn't know. But in case anyone else was wondering, the baby has been diagnosed with like 3 different heart deformities and will need surgery as soon as he's born. Like within the first week of birth, and has to be put on a special medication. Meanwhile, my husband and I have essentially been scheduled a crap ton of doctor appointments both in town AND and hour/and half away from home as well. I'll have to give birth in my state's main hospital instead of the one home so that means I won't be close to family. The baby will have to heal in the ICU for a month straight so I lost my opportunity at a happy pregnancy, the newborn phase, and any hope for skin to skin contact after birth. Whew what a mouthful! Anyway, I'm taking it one day at a time, and I appreciate you and anyone that checks in on me here and there!)

You don’t know what started it—maybe a dream, maybe just a day that felt too big for her tiny body—but Hana is sobbing.

Full-body, hiccuping, fist-clenched sobbing. Her cheeks are blotchy and puffy, lips pushed out in the deepest, wobbliest pout, and you can’t even get near her without her flailing and turning her face away.

She’s in her little bed, curled up and trembling, hands fisted in her blanket like she’s trying to disappear into it. You’re crouched beside her helplessly whispering, “It’s okay, baby, just breathe, I’m here, I’ve got you,” but she’s not hearing any of it.

You don’t even have to call for Jungkook.

You hear the soft pad of his feet before he even reaches the door.

He’s shirtless—just grey sweats hanging low, hair a sleepy mess, one side of his face still creased from the pillow. His tattoos stretch across his arm and shoulde, ink moving with the slow rise and fall of his chest. He doesn’t say anything at first, just surveys the scene, then—

“Hi, princess,” he murmurs, voice gravelly with sleep, warm and low as his eyes land on her trembling form. “You having a hard time?”

Her head lifts. Barely. And when she sees him, she lets out a broken, “Dada…” so small, so watery, it nearly knocks the air from your lungs.

He drops to his knees beside her bed in an instant.

And oh, God—

One of his hands cups her tiny tear-stained face, almost comically large in comparison. His palm spans nearly her whole cheek and jaw, tattooed fingers gentle where they brush under her eye and along her damp curls.

The other hand settles behind her head, cradling it like something precious, and he leans in just enough for her to feel him there—solid, steady, safe.

“Hey, hey,” he murmurs, “You’re okay, bun. I’m right here. Breathe, yeah? In… out. Can you do that for me?”

She tries. She’s still crying, still hiccuping, face pressed into his chest now, little fists slapping weakly at his bare skin like she’s mad at him for not showing up sooner. He lets her. Just holds her through it, his big hands calming her while she shakes.

“You’re safe,” he whispers against her hair, kissing her temple. “Nothing’s gonna get you. Not while I’m here.”

You’re frozen. Useless. You can’t stop staring at the contrast between his calloused hands and her tiny, quivering form. How his thumb strokes over the curve of her pouty cheek, how her hand grabs onto his shoulder like she’s clinging to a lifeline—her whole body dwarfed by his frame, just wrapped up in him like he’s her whole world.

And maybe he is.

Because eventually, the sobbing fades. The hiccups slow. Her breathing evens out against his chest, her little fingers tangled in the ink on his shoulder.

She falls asleep like that.

And he looks up at you, eyelids heavy but lips curled into the softest, most smug little smile, and whispers, “Got her.”

You’re not breathing.

You might be crying. Or ovulating. Or both.

Because you’re fully certain nothing in the world has ever been hotter than watching this man, half-naked and barely awake, soothe your baby back to sleep with nothing but his hands and a sleepy whisper.

You’re so done for.

So I've said multipe times now (here and here) that thinking nmj is just so blinded by privilege he doesn't undertand that acting out of line gets people killed is, in my opinion, a misunderstanding of his character that ignores the part where he's, you know, actively dying the whole time and thinks that's a good thing. But that doesn't mean I don't think privilege plays no role at all in how he views the world.

Specifically, his view that death (at least premature or violent death) means something.

Death isn't always a tragedy to NMJ, but it is always meaningful. If you kill an evil dangerous person for your righteous cause, that death had meaning. There was evil in the world and now there is less of it. Similarly, if you die in the pursuit of your righteous cause, that death has meaning, because the sheer dedication you gave to it that you were willing to die for it will further that cause, and your bretheren will be invigorated by your sacrifice to fight even harder.

If a death isn't meaningful, that's an injustice and it is up to the living to give it meaning. That's what cuts so deep about his father's murder. There were no consequences, no changes, no meaning. Wen Ruohan was just going to get away with it! He fights and wins an entire war to make it mean something, to make it so that the unjust murder of Nie Mingjue's father is part of Wen Ruohan's downfall.

But this is a view he can only hold because he's the kind of person who's death will be meaningful. Most ordinary people's deaths are meaningless. Not ontologically, not inherently, but they are made meaningless because no one cares. For death to be meaningful you either have to be so powerful that anything you risk your life for will be impacted in some way. (Like, say, if you sacrifice a long life for immense martial power in a faustian bargain with a blade) Or if people with that kind of power care enough about you to do so for you. For most people, this isn't true. A starving street kid has no power to change the unfair world that put them there, even if they risk their life trying, and no one will do it for them once they die.

Nie Mingjue knows this in abstract, and of course rightfully believes it's wrong. But all that does is make it yet another righteous cause people should be willing to die for. Everyone's deaths should mean something, we'll make it so or die trying!

This is what the conflict between nieyao is about at its core. Because Jin Guangyao, fundamentally, cannot conceive of his own death as meaningful. Nie Mingjue grew up around powerful men who could change the world but refuse to do so because god forbid they risk a single hair on their perfect heads. Meng Yao, on the other hand, grew up in an environment where no one of importance would blink twice if you died. He was surrounded by meaningless death. Indeed his entire early life is defined by that lack of care.

Meng Shi dies and no one cares. Meng Yao gets thrown off a flight off stairs and no one cares. He has to be the one to do the caring, and once he's gone no one else will do it for him.

So he has to live.

Jin Guangyao eventually gets far enough that he actually does aquire the power to change some things... as long as he's alive. If he changes too much, holds on too tightly to his ideals, he'll die and it'll all be for nothing. He can't sacrifice himself for his goals because doing so would immediately render those goals unobtainable. No one will care about what he tried to do. He won't be a heroic sacrifice, he'll just be trash that finally cleaned itself up.

And well... Nie Mingjue dies, and someone makes it mean something. Makes it mean so much that the entire story of mdzs would not exist without it. Jin Guangyao dies and it doesn't mean anything. Most people are glad to be rid of him, and the few that are not don't do anything to change that.

I feel like the first time Jinwoo met her parents was also the first time he ever looked nervous—like visibly nervous.

I’m talking about that man spending half an hour standing in front of his closet, trying to decide which outfit best conveyed: “I’m not a pervert, I swear. No, I don’t only think about slaughtering monsters to gain EXP. Yes, I’ve been using protection when I sleep with your daughter. And no, I never initiated it—your daughter did." <- last one is a lie obviously.

He ended up wearing black pants, a grey trench coat, and a black turtleneck… because that’s all he had in his wardrobe 💀

I’m talking about Jinwoo with sweaty palms. Jinwoo looking like this 😐 instead of this 😑 during the drive to her house, which was a remarkable improvement.

“You’ll be fine, jagi,” his girlfriend said, bumping her shoulder against his playfully as they walked through the gate. “You’re an S-Rank Hunter. A celebrity. Everyone’s going to love you.”

He didn’t respond right away. He barely looked like he was breathing. “I’m not nervous.”

“Never said you were.”

“Oh.” A beat. “Well, I’m not.”

She warmed his heart, just like always.

By the time they entered the house, her parents were already standing by the door. Her mother had the brightest eyes, chirping out his name: “Oh, you’re finally here! You look even more handsome in person!”

But real talk—her mother immediately treated him like her own son. She offered him cookies (and wrapped extra for him to take home for his sister and mother). She even cooked his favorite dish for dinner. Jinwoo was nervous at first, yes, but he quickly felt at home. He smiled often—awkwardly, but sincerely—and he talked more that night than he ever had before.

Her father, though a bit strict and judgmental, wasn’t completely hostile. He kept sliding beers toward Jinwoo (probably hoping to get him drunk and extract the truth about everything lol), but since Jinwoo couldn’t get drunk, it was the dad who ended up wasted at the dining table 💀

Mom (grimacing at her husband drooling on the table): “Sorry. He’s not usually like this. I think he was nervous about meeting you.”

Jinwoo (blinking): “Me? Why?”

Mom (smiling tenderly): “Because you’re the Sung Jinwoo. Everyone knows your name, darling. It still feels unreal to me that you’re sitting in our living room.”

Jinwoo took a breath and turned to her mother. “I’m here to properly ask for your permission, ma’am.”

“I intend to marry your daughter.”

Her mother gasped, eyes wide. His girlfriend lifted her hand, showing off the diamond ring with a sheepish grin. “I said yes.”

“Oh my!” Mom looked ready to cry—then she slapped her husband’s shoulder. “Honey, wake up! Our daughter is getting married!”

Dad (completely drunk, slurring): “Married? She’s like… 19.”

GF: “I’m 25, Dad.”

“Still so young! What are you in such a rush for?” He then glared at Jinwoo. “You. Did you get my daughter pregnant?”

Jinwoo (turning pale): “No, sir—” He turned toward his girlfriend. “No, right?”

GF buried face in hands. Probably contemplated suicide.

Mom: “Oh my god, this is so exciting!!! I’m about to be a grandma!”

Girlfriend: “I’M NOT PREGNANT.”
