Apology
Even your ace can say sorry.
A/N: I AM BACK BAYBEEEEE :D Decided to keep it short before raining it with more short fics.
“GODDAMNIT, ROSS, STOP FUCKING UP MY STRATS!!!”
Sullivan stood up from his gaming chair, balling up his fists until they shook,  gritting his teeth. His eyes were glaring at the eyepatched figure, who was currently leaning back into his chair with a deadpan look.
“Your strats suck ass.” Ross tossed his headset onto the keyboard, making more loud noise and heating up the situation's atmosphere. “All of this meta bullshits as if the other teams don’t have the same fucking plan.” His head leaned forward, challenging the analyst.
There was a silence between them. Sullivan’s eyes widened, knuckles now white. “...What did you say?”
“You are a shit strategist. Be better.”
Barney and John managed to grab his shoulder before the other managed to tackle down the team's ace, holding onto each arm tightly. “LET ME GO, I WANT TO SHOW HIM WHO’S THE LOSER-”
“Calm yourself first, pardner!” Barney’s voice was somewhat a mix between his usual casual and soft tone, arms wrapping around the taller one. “I’m sure he has his reason, he’s just like that!”
Sullivan gasped, tears brimming from the corner of his eyes. “I’m so tired of people telling me I’m shit at making strategies while they didn’t use the strats right...” He yanked his arm from Barney’s hold, wiping his tears away. “I tried. I’m fucking trying. Fuck.”
Ross’ loud sigh made the analyst flinch, and he could hear his own quickening pulse in his throat. One inhale, and-
“I’m sorry.”
…Huh?
The ace bowed down slightly while biting his lower lips, eyes looking away as if Ross was avoiding him. “I was too harsh. I’m sorry.”
He didn’t add any more words after that. Only an apology, and possibly it was a genuine one.
“...If you have any objection about the strategies that I made, you could’ve just come to my place and talk it out.” Sullivan let out a quiet yet shaky exhale, and a small smile started to appear on his expression. “You’re fucked up and scary. You know that, right?”
Now, the ace’s eyes shifted towards the other, showing a grin. The same grin that he used to have when he knew he’d win in tournaments. “Because I’m the best, y’know?”

---------------------------------------------------
You’ve become the best player on the school’s rugby team. Everybody treated you with respect and nobody dared cross your path. This didn’t use to be this way. When you first arrived at Woodsboro high, you were bullied and pushed around like a piece of meat by the people, that now, fear you on the field. Their leader was Katia, middle heighted, hot-headed girl. They considered themselves better, for they were good at what they did yet you didn’t excel at anything really. They picked on you for your constant humming of the same lullaby, weird habits and for you not having any friends. You weren’t a bad student your grades were average, and the teachers liked you. You just weren’t exceedingly good at what you liked. It didn’t help that you were silent most of the time either, except for your humming. Never speaking much, always keeping your thoughts to yourself.
After a year, you decided to try out what they were doing, and you immediately outmatched all of them in it. The moment you stepped on the field, it was as if you had been replaced by a superior, more powerful, and robust version of you. You just couldn’t be stopped.
For this you quickly became a core member of the school’s rugby team. With your lead you won price after price, demolishing anyone who would dare stand out against you. It felt unfair, yet glorious. Your old bullies reconciled with you, trying to make you like them, but you pushed them away. Their actions and behaviour disgusted you, yet you needed to tolerate them. They were pretty good at what they did during matches.
Beside the bullies disappearing, your social life changed too. You made some new friends and joined their group. Without realizing it at first, you’ve become obsessed with one of them very quickly. Tara was her name. Just thinking it made you have goosebumps. Her eyes were captivating, her movements were perfect, her existence was a bliss. Her laugh would melt you and give you energy throughout the day. You watched her in classes, only taking her eyes off her if someone pointed it out, or she noticed. Being in her presence always made you calm and at peace. Yet it has also awoke something inside you. You’ve always felt it, but now it was intensified by her. It was this great rage, buried deep inside of you. You could feel it growing, devouring you whenever someone made her discomfortable even the slightest. Whenever someone pushed against her in the corridor. Whenever someone touched what was yours.
To your fortune, you two started hanging out even outside of school. You held movie nights almost daily, which didn’t cause any problems, because both of basically lived alone. Your parents died in a car accident, whilst your uncle, your new guard was either on drugs, or was drunk all the time. Her family was a bit more complicated story.
“Don’t tell me you have never seen Stab…” she said in disbelief one night. “You at least know what it’s about… right?”
“Of course! Masked killer starts stabbing. Hence the title. The directors could have been a little more creative don’t you think?” you asked sarcastically.
Tara’s mouth was wide open. When her shock wore of, she put the first one on, not giving you the chance to protest. You started to watch it, not having real high expectations for it. You couldn’t have been more wrong. Just after the first kill, you were glued to the screen. It just felt alive. The murders were brutal, gory, and fulfilling. It tingled and sated that side of you, you didn’t really get to know yet. Every second of it was perfect. It reminded you of her. You were so immersed by the movie, you didn’t notice that she was looking at you the whole time, her mood only changing with yours. When the end credits rolled you looked at her and said, “Looks like we are having a marathon tonight.”
After you saw the movies, you got obsessed with them. Not long after, you bought the mask, the robe, and the knife to have the complete set. You didn’t plan on showing it to her but caved the moment she set foot at your place. She looked happy, that she made a fan out of you.
Your friendship hit an all-time high. You two were always seen together, never one, without the other. Your friends were fuming over how oblivious the two of you were, betting over when you two finally admit your feelings for another. At first it was meant to be fun, but when their purses started to deplete, they got more and more inpatient.
Tara started attending your rugby practices not long after, which always made you have butterflies in your stomach. On a sunny Tuesday, whilst having dinner together, you discovered from Chad that she herself is playing rugby too. Just not in school.
“You’re kidding…” you said in disbelief.
“Nope” he replied, popping the ‘p’. “She isn’t just playing. She is good at it. Might I say even better than you, my dear darling!”
For that last part you gave him a look that got him to shut up quick.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” you turned to her, asking curiously.
“I… don’t really know. I guess it just never came up?” she answered shyly.
“And you say she’s good?”
Before he could answer, she asked back. “You question his statement?”
Careful. You thought to yourself. “Well, you don’t seem like the type that…” Idiot!
“Let me show you on the field just what type I am to you…” she said, her voice filled with dismay.
“I didn’t mean to offend you, Tara.”
“Too late Miss L/N…”
“Oh, you’ve done it. She is using last names…” Chad said, sinking back in his chair, wishing to be anywhere not here.
“On the field. Tomorrow at your practice” Tara said with finality.
“I’m looking forward to this” you said with a chuckle.
---------------------------------------------------
That night you were so excited for the next day, you couldn't sleep. The thought of Tara and you being together on the field made you happy and giddy. This mood got the better of you, and Amber was the one that would take the worst of it. She was your go to in everything. You knew you trust her with everything, so you did. When your obsession with Tara started, she didn’t judge you for it, even encouraged you. Right now, she wished she didn’t do it. You were texting her non-stop about her, disrupting her sleep. She groaned loudly into her pillow as the sounds of your texts going off sieged her ears. Yet, she didn’t have the heart to turn you down, and to ignore you. So, she started writing back.
As you rented about what tactics you will use and told her how you will maybe let her win, she wrote back an occasional “yes”, or “That shit will WORK”. You didn’t comprehend how much time has passed as you talked with each other while you were humming your usual lullaby. Finally, you noticed your surroundings getting brighter. As your tired mind finally recognized what this meant, you facepalmed yourself so hard your head hit the wall, making you groan out loud. You looked at the time and realized that you didn’t just not have time to sleep but would need to hurry to not be late from school. You quickly got ready, making a hot cup of coffee, and after chugging it down, you started sprinting, your bag bouncing of your back.
The streets were filled with jack o’ lanterns, as it was the end of October. Tomorrow would be Halloween, which got the city exited, decorating the whole place with Ghostface masks and paper knives. You saw some bats and spiders here and there, but the main decoration everywhere, was the legacy of Woodsboro.
You got to school just in time. You swept through the halls decorated in Halloween theme, making it to your destination just as the teacher closed the door behind him. Damned hour zero. you thought as you grabbed the door and sneaked into the classroom. The teacher had his back towards you, so you quietly pulled the door towards yourself wishing it would shut by itself and started slowly but surely making your way beside Tara’s side.
“Miss L/N would you mind please closing the door behind you?” Mr. Darsney asked with a condescending tone. For a moment you stooped even lover, then straightened your posture and went back to the door to close it. Loud. The class was giggling, Tara’s face shining brighter than the sun itself. You felt yourself get mesmerized by her. “Not only are you late, Miss L/N, but to you standing there, beside the door, watching somebody very curiously is more important to you than to sprint to the desk to run through your notes in case of a surprise test? Now that’s bold… Bold enough to assume you are overly prepared for it.”
You tried walking to your place but was cut off by him once more. “No, Miss L/N, please come out here, and tell me how you would solve this quadradic equation…” You turned towards the numbers he wrote on the table and shot lightnings at him with your eyes. There was no way in hell you could solve this in this state of mind, and he knew it, wide grin on his face.
After a few more questions, he let you sit down, a new ‘F’ decorating your grade book. You were fuming there beside Tara, imagining different and more creative ways to end Darsney’s life. Some of them you quite liked. Still, your favourite was running your knife through him over and over and over and over again. What am I thinking? It was the rage. Must have been the rage.
“You, okay?” Tara asked you, as you slumped down next to her.
“I’m alright” you said, as you sighed deeply.
After class, you and Tara went to the yard, to the place where you and your friends would always sit and talk. They all pour in one by one, Amber being the last one. Her expression is plain dead, as if she was dragged out of a coffin just moments ago.
“Well, you look like hell” you teased her. She gave you such a dark look, you immediately shut up. Her gaze stayed on you for a couple more moments, making you feel small, but would eventually dissipate. “Wanna watch the big showdown between me and Tara?”
“I’d rather not talk about that now…” she managed to say out. The tiredness in her voice made you feel sorry for her. She lived almost as far away as you from school, if not farther.
Yet, hours later, she showed up to the practice, taking her usual space, next to the field. You arrived a little late. The others already began the practice. Today the coach called in sick, so you were left to do what you thought was best for yourselves. As you approached the others, you spotted Tara already being around them, making lightning quick moves with the ball. What she lacked in strength and height she made up for in speed and agility. You couldn’t be more amazed.
After watching the game unfold for almost five minutes, they spotted you and started making teams. You let them know you and Tara wanted to be on opposite sides, which they gladly accepted. No one would have a chance if you two were put together.
As you lined up before each other, Tara threw you a wide grin. You leaned into position; your face close to hers. She looked at you, then pouted, playing the weak little girl. “Please, don’t make me scream. I don’t want to!”
“Oh, but I would love to hear that! Preferably somewhere else…” you answered, mimicking her smile.
“Keep it in your pants Y/N” she said, leaning even closer. “Not while they are watching…” she whispered in your ear, making you have goosebumps. You felt lightheaded and hazy. Her smirk told you that she noticed your state of mind. She leaned in close once again. “Who knows” she started whispering again. “Maybe I’ll let you hear them afterwards…”
She leaned back before you could do anything, then signalled for the match to start. As the whistle’s sound cut through the air, you threw yourself into the area where the ball would fall, Tara in your tracks. You watched the sky as the ball descended right into… Tara’s hands. Somehow, she ran around you and snatched the ball away from you. As soon as she did that, she started sprinting towards the goal, but was caught by one of Katia’s friends, Delilah. As they smashed together Tara fell back on the ground making you shout at her. As you realized you couldn’t be angry at your own teammate you found an excuse for your anger, told a few instructions then went back to playing the game. Focus Y/N. Focus you thought to yourself.
The end of the match was nearing, and the score was tied. With a few more of your outbursts, your team wasn’t really in the mood to stop Tara once she got the ball. But you needed the win and tensions were high. Then, when the timer was nearing zero, Tara got the ball again. You chased after her, taking everything you had to catch up, still failing. Then she bounced back from something, hitting the floor hard, making her scream out in pain.
You stopped, blood boiling in your veins as you looked up at the woman who stood above Tara. It was Katia, sweat dripping down her face. Something in you snapped, suddenly seeing every little detail in the field. In just a moment you decided against gutting Katia right in front of everyone. You strengthened your posture and went to Tara to help her up. Even with your senses getting better than ever, you didn’t see the knowing look she gave you.
With Tara not being able to play because of her sprained ankle, the match ended in a win, making your team cheer on you and each other. While the other team was sulking, Tara was only watching you. Your iron gaze, that never left Katia, watching her every move, eyeing her up for something. Then you excused yourself, making your way to the change rooms. Amber threw you a worried look too, but you ignored it as you stormed away.
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill. These were the only words that were on your mind. Her scream echoed through your head again, and again, making your newly found rage and anger boiling up more and more inside you. Dead woman walking. Let me hear her scream! Let me see her insides! You couldn’t think straight. Your hatred took you over, made you turn, all barriers gone. You weren’t just going to let these thoughts be. You were going to act on them. Even the timing was perfect. Now you were free from your own restraints. Now you felt powerful. Now you could do anything. And she was going to pay.
---------------------------------------------------
There was a party that night at Katia’s, which you now excused yourself from. You also cancelled a movie night with Tara, saying you don’t feel so good. Then you took the robe out from the closet, and just looked at it for a while. You closed your eyes and saw what you would do in it. The feeling you felt from it was glorious. You put it in a bag and put the mask and the knife beside it. You also brought your uncle’s old Nokia with you, so you couldn’t be traced back. You wanted to mimic the original. It was the least you could do if you used their robes.
You left the house in a black t-shirt and jeans, walking towards Katie’s house, which was not far from yours. Costumed people were stumbling in and out of the house’s door. You realized you could have just come as Ghostface and still wouldn’t be suspicious. So, you hid behind a wall, and started to change. Lastly you put on the mask, with a careful and slow move. You hid the knife in your robes and walked to the house.
As people noticed you, they complimented your costume, saying it looked very real. Of course, it looks real. It wasn’t just bought from any site. You fumed at their ignorance. You were reminded, that when the robe arrived its hands were… bad. You needed to cut them down and sew back what you made from the material. You were proud of your work, and it felt good that people complimented it. Even though they knew nothing of what it took to make it stand out.
The house would have looked homely if it weren’t for the beer cups and liquid that were spurred around the rooms. Some music was banging in the background making you sick to the stomach. You call this music? Oh, you wanted to carve up the DJ too. Maybe you would.
Your eyes scanned the place, looking for Katia. You found her, heading downstairs after somebody. Perfect. You followed her, making sure to close the door of the basement behind you, leaving no escape route. You slowly started making your way down the stairs, taking joy in every step that got you closer to your prey. You looked around the room, finding a curtain to hide behind, next to some boxes. Then, you froze down.
She was talking with a girl; you wish you hadn’t seen here. Tara was cornered by her, covering shyly back from the other woman. Your breath slowed, and your vision went red.
Tara was worried about you calling sick but didn’t mention it. To Chad’s encouragement she attended Katie’s party but regretted it the moment she realized you wouldn’t be there. After she got there dressed as a pirate, she regretted it even more. People were too crowded, and Katie’s band wouldn’t leave her alone, either telling her how great she was, or mocking her with ridiculous reasons. When she heard them talking you out, she couldn’t take it and made her way outside for some fresh air. She found a mass outside too; she went downstairs to finally be alone. Even that didn’t go as planned. She missed your company. She missed your voice. She missed your touch.
Then, Katia showed up, and made it worse. How could she make something this bad even worse?
“You know, I never apologized for how I knocked you up” she started, not sounding genuine. “So, I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”
“No problem” Tara said, standing up and trying to make it past her, but Katia moved so she couldn’t. She shot her a questioning glare but was met by a sudden closeness from the other woman, who was now in her face, making Tara stumble back, hitting the wall.
“You were pretty impressive on practice today” Katia started again, with a deeper voice as she moved even closer. “I couldn’t keep my eyes off you…”
“Thanks?” Tara said, questioningly.
“You know, I can feel your gaze on me too. In classes, in the corridors of the school, at practice” Katia said, tucking at Tara’s shirt. “Some would say it’s creepy bu-“ she was cut of by her ringing phone.
She stepped back, taking her phone out of her back pocket with a frown. She didn’t know the number so she hang up. As she started to put it away, it rang again. Confused, she put it down again, only for it to start over. Tara felt relived a little, trying to inch out of the other woman’s periphery. When Katia hung up again there was a beat of silence. Until Tara’s phone rang. The two women looked at each other, fear evident in their eyes, then Tara picked up.
“Hello?” she all but asked, her voice trembling. She wasn’t sure who to fear more, the woman in front of her, or the human across the line. When she heard that voice, she was certain it was the later.
“Hello Tara” Ghostface said. “Could you pull Katia to the line? I would really love to talk with her. Oh, and don’t worry. All you need to do is watch…”
“Who is it?” Katia asked, as she saw Tara turn pale, all blood escaping her face.
“I- It’s for you” she managed to mutter out as she held the phone towards her. Katia took it and immediately spoke.
“Listen here you little cree-“
“No, you listen bitch! Didn’t your parents teach you manners?! When the phone rings, you answer it.”
“So, you were the one who was ringing me non-stop?” she asked with a shaken voice, taken off-guard by your voice’s rawness.
“Indeed, I was. Now, I’m going to be nice and give you a chance…” No not really you thought as your smile only grew bigger.
“A chance to what?”
“To make it out alive from this cold, rigid basement” you rolled your eyes.
She looked around, walking straight towards the stairs as she hung up. You ripped of your cover from before you, stopping her in her steps. You tilted your head, as you studied her, frightened, horrified face.
“Manners, maketh, man” you said, emphasising every word. You took the knife out, turning sideways towards her. “I’m disappointed that you acted so rashly. Now, I need to skip over the little game we would have had, and I hate to skip over things!”
“Wha- What do you want?” she asked, backing away from you. Just seeing her like this made everything worth it.
“It’s pretty simple” you answered her, stepping slowly closer. Tara was to your right, the stairs to the left, knife in your right hand. You shook it a little, to sharpen the tension in Katia. As you did, she hit the wall, stumbling off it. In a moment, you were on her, gripping her neck tightly. “I just want to her you scream!”
As you said the words, you plunged the knife into her stomach, turning it to make it more painful. The cries she let out were music to your ears, everything else fading in the background. You pulled out, then stabbed her twice in the chest, making her writhe under your unclenching fingers. Warm blood was dripping down your hand, and it made you feel good.
You let her fall to the ground, as her legs couldn’t hold her anymore. As she coughed, she held one of her hands up, trying to stop you. “Do you know who my fathe- Argh!” you didn’t let her finish that sentence, kicking one of her new wounds.
“Sorry, somehow, I’m just not worried about deputy James” you told her. You didn’t even notice that Tara wasn’t beside you anymore as she disappeared in the background, slowly making her way up the stairs. Her ankle hurt like hell, so she tried her best to hold back her whimpers. Her heart was pounding in her chest, yet she wasn’t scared. She felt that something was off with this Ghostface.
You started humming as you placed yourself on top of Katia, pressing one of your knees into her wounds, kicking the other one, so it would break. That finally got her to scream out in pain. A chill ran up your spine at the sound. It felt majestic.
Next to Katia’s screams, there was a new sound in the room, that made Tara stop trying to pry the door open. She looked down the stairs, eyes wide. She would recognize that humming anywhere. Your humming. Was this reality or was she dreaming? Why did she feel even less sympathy for Katia now, that she knew who was behind the mask. Without thinking straight, she started stepping back down the stairs.
As Katia squirmed under you, you felt more fulfilled than ever. You made every cut, every stab, every hit with total consciousness. Blood was covering the woman, making her eyes red, as her tears mixed with the crimson liquid. You let yourself enjoy what you did, making no lethal cuts. You also tried to make sure she was wake long enough to feel every single one of them. As your tunes came to an end, you leaned over to her face, gripping her hair to hold her back. “Now you know what happens when you touch what’s mine” you said, then dived your knife into her neck, just beside the chin. She arched up one last time, then fell back, not moving anymore. You took the knife out of her neck, swiping the blood of from it. Then you looked back up.
Tara was leaning against the staircase’s frame, watching you with wide eyes. Her posture didn’t show any sign of discomfort or fear, admiration showing on her face. As you stood up, she mimicked you, then she took a step towards you. Then another. When she was close enough, she reached out for your mask, leaving you time to move back, but you didn’t. As she grabbed it and took it off, she let out a sigh.
“Tara…” you started, but were cut of by her lips on yours, as she leaned up to kiss you. It was hot, messy, and perfect. Her lips felt so soft, you could get high from them. Your knife dropped to the floor, but neither of you paid attention to it. You let her tongue pass into your mouth, which she did without hesitation. As you took her deeper, she pressed her body into you, turning yours on fire. She exhaled through her nose, then pulled away so that she could take a breath.
“That, was hot” she said, eyeing you. You couldn’t answer her, still trying to comprehend what just happened. “All this for me?” she asked, as she grinned at you.
“Everything for you…” you blared out immediately. “I would do anything for you. I would drown the world in blood before anyone could take you from me.”
When you finished, she kissed you again deeply. It didn’t take much time for you to turn the party into a make out session. “Take me” she whispered into your ear. “Let me scream for you.” Your mind went blank at those words, and you did what she asked of you. Tara felt in heaven as you made her feel better than ever. She looked down at Katia’s fresh dead body, relief flooding through her, making the sensations even better. She was laying with her killer, and it made everything just right.

The First Rule of Fanfiction
1983
2nd period Social Studies class.  I slid the notebook to my friend Bethann, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice.  Scratchy writing in cheap ballpoint pen interspersed with amateurish drawings of elaborate wedding dresses.
“Nick asked me last night,” it started.  The writing was my first fanfiction, Real Person Fiction (RPF), detailing Nick Rhodes’ proposal of marriage and my subsequent wedding planning.  There was going to be lots of lace, lots of giant sleeves, lots of eyeliner, and lots of hairspray.  And it was all going to be teal.  To offset Nick’s (at the time) bright orange hair.
While I was proud of my story, and of the accompanying illustrations, there was no way I wanted anyone but a select few people to see it.  I took a huge risk in showing Bethann during class, what if the teacher had taken it and read it?  Instant death by mortification.

Sherlock S3 preview event, with a Q&A led by Caitlin Moran.  Cast and crew were in attendance, and Moran pulled out some fanfiction for the leads to read.  “Moran reportedly tricked stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman into reading aloud an explicit work of erotic Johnlock fanfic that Moran had gleaned (read: taken without permission) from the fan-run Archive of Our Own.  Moran assured the two actors that the excerpt she wanted them to read was purely innocent.  But as the actors read the scene aloud, as london-reviews reported, “it was clear it wasn’t as innocent as she kept making out.” (https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/sherlock-fanfic-caitlin-moran/) (emphasis mine)
But it was all in good fun, right?
Except it wasn’t.
"As for mildredandbobbin, the author of the now-famous fanfic, she was mortified. As condolences and support from horrified fans poured in, mildredandbobbin reacted in a heartfelt post on her Tumblr. 'I hope Caitlin Moran understands that she was hurtful and unprofessional, that in fact she used her position of privilege to belittle and humiliate,' she wrote. '[T]he one bit of contact I have with them, and it’s about humiliation and mockery.' She also deleted her fanart Tumblr out of fear that it would be more widely seen."
"Mildredandbobbin told the Daily Dot via Tumblr that she was 'appalled' that Moran had used her work 'for cheap laughs.' "
It was a highly inappropriate thing to do to them, it was extremely hurtful to me and it was terrifying for a lot of other writers in fandom to think it could have been their work being paraded around for ridicule and criticism. Fandom is supposed to be a safe space for women and we would appreciate it if journalists could respect the fourth wall and stop using our work to get a laugh during interviews.
(ibid)
Mildredandbobbin hasn’t shared any writing on Archive of Our Own since her work was stolen by Caitlin Moran.
In addition to the author being mortified, it appeared that the stars were as well.  Photos and video taken after the event show a distraught looking Cumberbatch being comforted by both Freeman and Amanda Abbington.  (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLCpPUpBWPk)

2022
In an announcement released on June 24, 2022, Channel 4 (@C4Press on Twitter) announced that it “has commissioned a new comedy entertainment series from RDF seeing celebrities reading steamy fan fiction acted out by a cast of lookalike puppets.” (https://www.channel4.com/press/news/mel-giedroyc-invites-celebrities-really-really-rude-puppet-show-wt-channel-4)
While details are scarce, Ao3 users report having been contacted through comments like “Hi there, I’m currently working on a new TV show for all about fanfiction for a major UK broadcaster.  We really enjoyed reading your work, and would love to speak to you about it, and explain a bit more about our show and see if you’d be interested in being involved.”
There are so many things wrong with that, starting with the fact that soliciting works in that manner violates Ao3’s terms of service.  Other fans have questioned whether or not permission will be given to use existing works, or if authors of the “commissioned” works (see C4 press release, linked above) will be paid.
Many fanfiction authors are young, or queer, or identify as female, or are young, queer AND identify as female, and that adds another layer of wrongness to this proposed “collaboration.”  Youth is a time for exploration and discovery, and writing fanfiction is a great way to figure out who you are and how you occupy your place in the world.  Having your exploration put on a national stage like that can be devastating.  Thinking back to my own youthful and innocent wedding planning- I never in a million years pictured a scenario where Nick Rhodes himself would read it.  I would have burst into flames, and it would have caused embarrassment for him too I’m imagining.  No matter that I allowed Bethann to read it- I did not give permission for someone else to take it and show it around.
Additionally, having seen Cumberbatch and Freeman’s reactions to “steamy fan fiction” about their characters, I can’t imagine it would have gone much better had they read “steamy fan fiction” about themselves (ie: mature or explicit RPF).  While it is widely believed that some stars (like Michael Sheen and Taika Waititi) seek out and read fan works in private, that’s a different dynamic than celebrities acting out stories with puppets on national TV.  According to The Sun, “viewers should bank on plenty of laughs, with celebs including Harry Styles and The Chase’s Anne Hegerty at the forefront of fans’ fantasies.” (https://www.thesun.ie/tv/8995543/really-really-rude-puppet-show-erotic-fan-fiction/)
Oh.  Harry.  NOOOOOOO.
As I shared in response to a recent post about this topic, Fight Club rules apply.  The first rule of fanfic about actors is you never talk about fanfic to the actors.  Here’s hoping Channel 4 remembers the rule before it’s too late.

Note
About the non-affair, if I remember correctly:
- stories started to come out about Catherine and her "rural rival" Rose, some disagreement over managing a fundraiser for a charity they're both patrons of. Note that this is somewhat plausible, and adults can have and resolve disagreements in their professional lives.
- the stories get spun as "Unrest among the Turnip Toffs" - no new info, but there's some hint the aristo code of silence has been broken (we leave credibility here, the Toffs will not tell us plebs a thing)
- Twitter starts riffing on the "Turnip Toffs" thing
- Hadley Freeman from the Guardian asks on Twitter what is it all about, the tone is "please stop hinting, tell it straight if there's something to tell"
- Giles Corey replies with the infamous tweet, "Of course, darling!"
- some other journalist on the Daily Beast, after a long jeremiad on never being admitted into W&C circle, claims to have heard some sort of confirmation at a dinner party
- Tatler prints a bitchy article about "Kate the Great" decrying Carole's taste in throw pillows, and printing Rose's name next to "Royal mistresses through the ages", or something, on the same cover
That's it. That's all there is. One deleted tweet, one alleged dinner party, one Tatler strop about "middle class Kate" - Catherine and Rose probably had a bit of a quarrel, and it became this. Zero evidence.
It shows the Royal family is not equipped to deal with the social media echo chamber, but that's it.
Guess who broke the turnip toffs story? Dan Wottoon. Guess who he alluded to getting that tip off from? Omid.
Also Daily Beast = Tom Sykes. And we have already had the conversation about why Tom hates William. It's always the same cast of characters in the games that Harry and Meghan love to play.
BTW the turnip toff story made ZERO mention of an affair. Which I why I don't count it as a part of the affair rumor genesis. Meghan had Omid plant the seed and the rest is history. She twisted nothing into something.
Here is why I think Meghan made Rose her target, because Rose got to attend the Spanish State Dinner with Harry, but Meghan did not as they were only dating.

NOW YOU SEE ME 3... ?
Hello, it's me again,
As some of you may know, a few things have been around about the new Now You See Me movie... A lot of rumours, dates, cast, etc. Now there's information about it, that's a fact, but I would like to present it to you because there are a lot of thing that are being said that are not necessarily true... At least for now...
First of all, director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Uncharted, Venom, etc.) will be directing the third movie, this was announced at late september of 2022 by Lionsgate's Joe Drake. At this point there were no news about the cast.
Tumblr media
It's also been claimed that Seth Grahame-Smith will be working on the script.
According to Screen Daily (27 october 2023), Alex Kurtzman and Bobby Cohen will be (once again) producing.
As for the cast, Now You See Me 3 will have the franchise key stars reprising their roles, being Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman.
I think it's important to say that actor Michael Caine announced his retirement from acting a month ago, which obviously means he would not be involved in the third movie.
Tumblr media
I've also read that Lizzy Caplan, Michael Caine, Dave Franco and even Isla Fisher will reprise their roles, but as far as I know, it is not true (specifically Michael Caine).
And the latest news (literally from hours ago) from different sources claim that the third movie will be a "reimagined" take on the franchise, that the movie will not be a continuation of the series but a "fresh new take on the franchise from the movie's new director vision"…
Due to the fact that this statement is so new, I wouldn't know a lot about it.
Also according to a few sources, production will start in the first half of 2024.
A new take, from a different director, could mean a lot of different things, a prequel? Individual stories of each horsemen? Getting deeper on The Eye's story and it's structure? I don't know, so before I start getting my brain out on that statement, all the information and all the possibilities I will stick to the facts and wait for some more news on the new movie,
It's also important to state that the actors' strike influenced a lot in the works for the movie, maybe that's why there are only 3 actor confirmed for the project and maybe now that it is "all over", in the next weeks we could have good news about the cast, the plot, etc…
Let me know what do you think about the cast, the director, the new vision on the movie, what have you heard, read, etc.
Note: I just wanted to say, I know I can do better, but, my english somehow improved in the last years, I hope this improvement will have a positive effect in this blog (is this a blog? To be honest I never really understood how Tumblr worked) so we can all talk, share, etc. About this franchise that I absolutely love…

Just saw Wakanda Forever.
I liked it a lot! First marvel movie I've seen in phase 4 beyond the joyless, effortless dreck that was Thor 4.
And I actually really enjoyed it.
Let's talk about it.
So first:
Story: 8/10
I enjoyed the story quite a bit. The pacing was much slower than any of the other frenetically ADHD Phase 4 Marvel stories, and I did enjoy the build up and tension. Not many quips and annoying one liners too. Just an emotionally deep, heavy melodrama with action thrown in here and there. The focus was on the characters and I really, really loved that.
But holy fuck. It was too long. We hit the 2 hour mark and I was like oh my god...there’s still 40 minutes...and those 40 minutes could’ve been sharper, cleaner. It lagged at several parts when it didn’t need to.
Martin Freeman and his wife were utterly pointless. Their scenes felt forced and strange and terribly uninteresting.
I don’t mind the over drama being how the world’s governments treat Wakanda...that was narratively cool and thematically solid, I just think Martin Freeman lacked the importance he had in the first movie, and so his entire role could’ve been cut or reduced.
He’s just exposition man, and the movie didn’t need the American government scenes. Not really. They didn’t have any impact on the main plot, really, anyway.
The main threat was Namor, and that was all we really needed.
So that’s the minus 2 deduction.
Action: 8/10
I loved the action of this movie because it felt meaningful, and character-focused, rather than just a CGI mess like say....Black Adam. There was real weight to the action, which is nice, since Thor 4 kind of destroyed my idea of Marvel as a decent action studio.
I enjoyed Wakandan tech, Shuri’s more technology based approach to fighting, and Okoye domination, as always. Less action than Black Panther, but where it existed, it was poignant, fun, had purpose, and felt fairly solid.
The only deduction comes from the fact that well. Some of the underwater action was meh. And I was a little underwhelmed by the climax. The fight on a Wakandan ship was...ehhh.
Still, Shuri vs. Namor was pretty damn cool.
Effects: 9/10
Solid! Thor 4 looked fucking awful. I was so worried they’d be fucking lazy.
But no.
This movie was gorgeous.
This movie had wonderful, real costumes with some amazing makeup, clothing designs, weapon designs, and integrated tech.
Great CGI that felt seamless and not horribly and lazily edited. Some wonderful cinematography and shots of both Wakanda and Atlantis. Er... Talokan.
The tech looks cool. The CGI suits and moving pieces weren’t too distracting, not unless you deliberately slow things down to analyze them, which I suspect some people will.
My only real complaint is that Talokan was so murky and dark that I had a hard time seeing the daily lives of Talokan’s people? We were supposed to see like, children and families and this ethereal underworld city that lives so different from us...
But I could barely see shit. Plus, it didn’t look natural? Everyone had this weird stiffness to how they were swimming...I didn’t believe they naturally belonged there. Everyone moved too spasmodically. Like they were in a pool and the director was making them act like they’re ok when they’re actually about to run out of oxygen?
They might’ve known that, cuz we didn’t linger on the city for too long.
It wasn’t like super horrible, it was just awkward. So 1 point demerit.
Wakanda looked fantastic. Even when under attack.
So here’s the meat of this review:
Characters 7/10:
Shuri 10/10: I loved the exploration of Shuri's grief and her arc of becoming the Black Panther. That was beautifully done, solid thematically, narratively suitable due to the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman. It felt natural and respectful.
Shuri's relationship with Namor was thoughtful and deep and I liked how it was resolved. I'll admit I did want her to murder him for a brief moment just cuz I'm a gremlin like that, but it was nice for her to sit back and say well I'm a queen now. This isn't just between you and me. I don't want to bring our kingdoms against one another.
That was nice. It didn't feel as cheap as a marvel movie normally would do it, like, have Shuri make some dumb speech about how revenge is simply bad all the time.
It was more practical. A little less personal.
And it made sense for Shuri! She’s not this angry, passionate warrior.
She’s a scientist. A voice of reason.
Less mystical. Less honor bound, and more pragmatic and wise.
I always liked how Shuri was the character that represented Wakanda’s tech too.
Like Wakanda is this larger than life Afro-futuristic paradise where various African cultures from the real world are displayed...but also, it’s high tech.
So how do you negotiate between the highly technical and fantastic elements, with the more realistic, more grounded historical roots?
Shuri is the answer.
You have the traditional T’Challa. And then you have his more youthful and irreverent sister, who’s a scientist and a genius, who’s not just up to date with technology, but far ahead most of the world.
It makes sense, and having Shuri have to explore how that will affect her rule as the Queen...I liked that a lot.
I liked that she fought Namor hand to hand...and lost horribly, until she used her ship and her other tech to weaken him.
It made sense for her.
And again, the story of her grief and losing both her brother and mother...deciding that she would still reject revenge and embrace her new role as a leader...it was well done.
I loved Shuri here.
I hope her actress has given up on her anti vaxx weirdness from a while back!
Now...
That being said...
Namor 5/10: Didn't really like him. He felt a little underdeveloped. He had this hatred of colonists like Killmonger, but he lacked the emotional connection and development that Killmonger had.
We just didn't see his personal story enough. It didn't feel justified enough, since we only saw a few scenes of his mother, and only one scene about the horrors of the surface....
Plus we've already seen that anyway. It was a copy paste of the idea that here's an oppressed people who wanna get back at the rest of the world.
Not saying colonialism isn't bad or anything but in this particular narrative, you are just copy pasting a new anti genocide...genocidal maniac.
Plus his stupid wing feet had me rolling my eyes the entire time. He just didn't feel that intimidating. We didn't see much of his abilities in the water other than that he's very fast and he re powers through water.
Kind of not very memorable in terms of weapons either...man’s hot but he’s basically just a dude in a swim suit.
His necklaces/collar were interesting and his later re design was fine, but....I don’t know.
His aesthetic was fine, but his character narrative was weak to me.
And like I said, I was just laughing at his dumb little wing feet.
Yeah they give him the power of flight, so what? There are a lot of characters who can fly without looking silly.
Also again, not enough underwater stuff to really make him pop out as a credible villain.
He might as well have just been a flying villain.
I don’t mind the resolution they reached, though, so.
Okoye 4/10:
Listen. Okoye was very funny and I do love her. But she kind of...was just there for the first part, and then she got fired...and then Shuri just re-hired her again by the end part. Not nearly as complex as the first film.
I liked that they touched on Angela Bassett being annoyed still over that whole, siding with Killmonger shit.
But her character didn’t grow or change or do a whole lot, even as a civilian...
She didn’t even fix her mistake of letting Shuri get kidnapped. Nakia did that...
And speaking of Nakia...
Nakia 5/10:
I really feel like they didn’t know what to do with Nakia...she did save Shuri and the Scientist Girl at one point, but she didn’t do much for the whole rest of the movie, besides Be There.
I feel like they dropped the ball on this one.
And the ending credit scene, where she has T’Challa’s son...it’s sweet and all, but I can’t help but feel like it reduces her role to being a mom who’s off screen.
We didn’t see enough of her involvement with the main plot.
She was some emotional support for Shuri, but...she wasn’t impactful other than that. Kind of sad, I liked her a lot in the original, since she and T’Challa had these conflicting viewpoints about how Wakanda should be involved in the world...
But here, well. Now that the world knows of Wakanda...she just has no purpose or role.
She didn’t really have any good fight scenes either. Most of her work was ensemble. Mixed in with other randoms.
They did my girl dirty....but damn, she was gorgeous this movie...
M’Baku 11/10:
No notes. He’s perfect.
He’s hilarious, he’s emotional support. He and Shuri were so fucking cute.
No notes.
Queen Ramonda 11/10:
Angela Bassett carried this movie on her back. Truly phenomenal performance.
Wonderful beginning and end to her glorious character.
I am mad that they killed her, but...also, it was fitting enough, since Shuri becoming the next Queen AND the Black Panther was neat.
But damn, I am a little mad.
Ironheart 5/10:
I didn’t hate this character, but...she was like...barely present. She was important initially, but then she just got under water shafted for a long time...then she came back to help Shuri do some background work....then she was in the final battle.
And that was kind of it.
I didn’t care for her suit, and didn’t feel like her character had enough significance to Shuri or the main plot.
She was a genius tech expert, but helping Shuri design the anti Namor ship was something any character could’ve done, that’s how background it felt.
I didn’t think she had enough of a fleshed out backstory either.
She didn’t have an arc, plus I wish she and Shuri had bonded more over their scientific genius. Their friendship came across to me like...I guess they like each other.
We needed more of them finishing each other’s sentences or geeking out over their shared technical prowess.
We only really got a scene in the beginning and the very end.
not enough meat and potatoes.
And that Ironman suit was dopey looking.
So all in all...
8/10.
Yeah.
Solid, really good, way better than anything else in Phase 4....
Chadwick Boseman’s scenes had me tearing up or openly weeping....
A touching tribute to him, as well as the character.
The runtime needed to be reduced, however, and the plot dragged in several places.
Plus, Namor could’ve been more interesting. Beefed up.
Narratively, of course. His actor was pure beef.
Overall, I really liked it, though.
I’ve only seen 2 Marvel Phase 4 movies, and I’ll say.
Wakanda Forever deserved to be better than Thor 4, and it was.
Rest in peace, Chadwick.
You’re a legend.

Pinned Intro Post 🏛️ Boundaries & Canonized Background & Character Information!
Current Quest:
Signs off as Best/Love/etc, Glenn or -❤️🏛️
🏛️ Dad Facts
This is a dndads (Dungeons & Daddies) ask/rp blog for an AU version of Glenn Close! I refer to him as Swap!Glenn officially, and refer to the AU as Swap. His full name is Glenn Close-Freeman. This blog is ran by Mod Rome, who uses any pronouns! :) The AU is directly inspired by @birdifulhuman-blog -- go check them out!
🏛️ BOUNDARIES: In-Character DMs: Ok! (And encouraged!) Out-of-Character DMs: Ok! But I’d prefer it if you used my discord (if you have it) or my main ( @writtenanddirectedbyrome) Anon Asks: Ok! Feel free to bully/harass him too! Negative and positive asks appreciated. Shipping: Ok! Glenn is bisexual and good with open relationships. He is currently dating his version of Morgan Close-Freeman. Tagging: I tag for serious themes of suicide, assault, etc. but do not tag for spoilers because this is an AU. Daily facts are tagged as #dad fact. Reblogging: This account reblogs aesthetic photos, especially those of buildings. Other: NO EXPLICIT NSFW.
🏛️   Glenn is a level 15 sorcerer! I will roll for stats once his sheet is done.
🏛️ Everything is the same story-wise, but in this AU Glenn is swapped with Henry! Meaning that he was the one who grew up in Closevale with Bill Close. Swap!Bill, unlike Canon!Barry, liked deferring his responsibilities to everyone else who wasn’t him; he got away with this because everyone loved him! He was just so charismatic (and definitely wasn’t brainwashing everyone)!
As a kid, Glenn became a city planner of sorts since, when Swap!Meryl Streep arrived in Faerun and founded the town of Closevale, he took some...liberties with the infrastructure. When the leadership of the town is shifty, things are bound to break. But, of course, people respected him as Prince Glenn and he managed to bring the town up to some level of decency.
Somewhere along the way, Glenn ends up using his father’s mirror (passed down from the Streeps) to escape to Earth. He loses his memories, but is saved by Morgan Freeman! He gets a doctorate in architecture and begins working in San Dimas as one, but retires to become a professor after the birth of their child, Nicholas Close-Freeman. Turns out, he likes that better!
The rest of his story follows similarly--on the way to save his son from his father, he discovers he has innate magic. His son is affected by the Rogue card and hates him. He gets stabbed by his son after leaving Faerun, etc. etc.
Currently, he’s just trying to get things back to normal and repair the relationship between him and his son.

News At Six 1986 Infiltrates The Newsreader’s Production Office!
No, this is not a joke headline. I'm really in the production office - well, something that I made is, that is.
Our delightful director and friend of News At Six 1986 Emma Freeman posted a photo of the inspiration wall in the production office on Friday on Instagram; filled with so many photos and aesthetically pleasing images.
Tumblr media
Like the crazy human being you have all come to know me to be, I scanned that wall to see if there were any brand new promo photos. That was until my eyes fell on this. Can you see a collage of six faces right next to Lindsay?
Tumblr media
That is a collage made by me! It depicts the six leading ladies of The Newsreader (Helen Norville, Noelene Kim, Evelyn Walters, Val Jennings, Cheryl Ricci and Jean), which I made for International Women's Day in March! It is such a distinctive collage as it is the only one to exist of these six together. It is one hundred percent mine!
Tumblr media
I was so stunned and shaky to see this on the wall of the office, where the cast and crew would have passed it daily and it stands out so much as it is the only collage and fan-made picture there. It's quite central in the wall too. To be honest, I'm still buzzing. To think that someone hand selected that collage of mine, printed it out and stuck it on the wall with all the other images they were using to inspire themselves is such an honour. It's so tiny, but I can now say that I have officially contributed to the development of Season Two, and that News At Six 1986 is now properly a part of The Newsreader's story.
I've infiltrated the production office of an AACTA and Logie Award winning show - there's a humble brag! 😍💖📺🎉🇦🇺
Filming of Season Two begins this week, and I look forward to bringing you any sneak peeks I can find!

Tumblr media
So often, it seems that a celebrity controversy could be entirely preventable if the celebrity in question simply chose not to speak. But perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that a man with more than 300 books to his name isn’t one to hold back. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, James Patterson decided that the world needed to hear his thoughts on racism and Woody Allen’s memoir. According to Patterson, whose extensive works have prompted severallibraries to joke that he has “written everything,” older white men now face “another form of racism” when they try to make it as writers in the entertainment industry. “Can you get a job? Yes. Is it harder? Yes,” Patterson said. “It’s even harder for older writers. You don’t meet many 52-year-old white males.” The prolific co-writer also took issue with his own publisher, Hachette Book Group, noting that he “hated” the decision to dropWoody Allen’s memoir, Apropos of Nothing, back in 2020. The move came after Hachette employees walked out because of the long-standing sexual-abuse allegations against Allen. “He has the right to tell his own story,” Patterson said, adding, “I’m almost always on the side of free speech.” (Allen’s memoir later found a new home with Arcade Publishing.) Meanwhile, Patterson’s comments come as he is promoting his own memoir, James Patterson: The Stories of My Life, because of course they do. After all, before he was a writer, Patterson had a successful career in… you guessed it, advertising.
Tumblr media
James Patterson has apparently seen what being marginalized is like, and it isn't for him. Or for the aging, white male writers he seems to be worried about.
Reflecting on his illustrious career following the release of his autobiography, the bestselling author expressed concern for white men, whom he thinks are now having difficulty finding work in the entertainment and publishing industries.
Patterson classified their struggle as "just another form of racism" in an interview published in the Sunday Times in the U.K. Not surprisingly, he's getting a lot of heat for saying so.
The quote came as the "Stories of My Life" author, whose writing success came in tandem with his thrillers about Black detective Alex Cross, was trying to express disappointment over film adaptations of his novels, saying that he'd for once like to "stand up and cheer for one of my books on the silver screen."
Big-screen adaptations of his more than 300 books include the Morgan Freeman-starring films "Kiss the Girls" (1997) and "Along Came a Spider" (2001). (Next up is an adaptation of "Run, Rose, Run," which he co-wrote with music legend Dolly Parton.)
“I just wanted to create a character who happened to be Black,” the 75-year-old said. “I would not have tried to write a serious saga about a Black family. It’s different in a detective story because plot is so important.”
“I get it,” he continued. “How could we run through that period, especially in Hollywood, where there was all this talent and nobody got hired?”
From there, the writer of the Sunday Times piece said that Patterson is now worried about white men struggling to find work in film, theater, TV and publishing and thinks the problem is "just another form of racism."
"What’s that all about?” he mused. “Can you get a job? Yes. Is it harder? Yes. It’s even harder for older writers. You don’t meet many 52-year-old white males.”
Critics were quick to judge "The President Is Missing" co-author's remarks, taking to the replies of Patterson's most recent tweet to share their thoughts.
"So sorry to hear about the discrimination you and your $700 million face on a daily basis. We really should do more to help rich white multi millionaires get their voices heard. Can't imagine the struggles. Hang in there sir," one user wrote.
"I hope you really did not say this," added another.
"Great to see you overcome the stigma of being a white dude and get the gig to... *checks notes* write your autobiography. How many other writers were you up against?" said one tweet.
"You already know.... I'm not throwing away or burning my money (books [of] his I own) but I'm [definitely] removing them from my library And will never purchase them again. This man literally had 2 well known people of color play his main Character Alex cross then says this b.s. done," wrote another user.
Representatives for Patterson did not immediately respond Monday to The Times' request for comment.
Elsewhere in the interview, Patterson also said he disapproves of actors and public figures weighing in on topics they've gleaned off the internet, but said that he's "almost always on the side of free speech.”
He said that he "hated" that Little, Brown in 2020 pulled embattled director Woody Allen's memoir after the publishing company's staff staged a walkout.
"He has the right to tell his own story," Patterson argued.

I wanted to know why the Tucker prototype is called the "Tin Goose". Literally no one explains it. What's the reference? Is a tin goose good? Why or why not? Googling didn't produce any results, just a bunch of sites who end it at "referred to as" but don't explain why. The Wikipedia article has reference 13 to a local Wisconsin newspaper that says one of the designers takes credit for calling it that and he meant it in a derogatory way.
I scroll down to references and number 13 isn't a link, just a citation. So I log into my library website, get access to archive newspapers, pull "Fantastic Tucker Story". Waukesha Daily Freeman. June 29, 1949. p. 8. online and THE STUFF WIKI SAYS ISN'T MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE. >:/
So the mystery is back to square one. Why is it called that? And now do I have to tattle that the citation doesn't back up the sentence? I just wanted to know why they called it that I didn't mean to start a whole thing

"My Dead Friend Zoe" Has World Premiere at SXSW
Tumblr media
“My Dead Friend Zoe” was a crowd-funded first feature film from Army veteran Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, who served 5 years in Afghanistan and used his real-life experiences to craft this film (and his entire career up to this point.) He is a co-founder of the nonprofit organization Veterans in Media & Entertainment.  It is a plus that he has cast nearly all parts in “My Dead Friend Zoe” with actual veterans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPKTnlHV9tY HAUSMANN-STOKES Following its World Premiere at SXSW on Saturday, March 9th, the Writer-Director (aided in crafting the screenplay by A.J. Bermudez and Cherish Chen) Kyle Hausmann-Stokes told us of how his superior when he was serving in Afghanistan, where he served for 5 years and earned a Bronze Star, noticed his skill in shooting film of the veteran experience. That Army superior, recognizing talent,  aided Hausmann-Stokes in allowing him to train at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Since then, this native of Madison, Wisconsin has made films for a variety of veteran-related companies including the U.S. Air Force, UPS, the U.S. Department of Veterans, Google, and IBM. Now, Hausmann-Stokes has crafted a semi-fictionalized story about two real-life Army buddies of his, Ramirez and Ventura, who made it back home but took their own lives, something that happens with alarming frequency. The use of actual veterans was similar to the use of real-life refugees from World War II in Europe in the film “Casablanca”, which helped give “Casablanca” its sense of authenticity, They are all totally believable. PLOT MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE, says the synopsis, is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran who is at odds with her family thanks to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales, “Dead to Me”), her dead best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her VA group counselor, Dr. Cole (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother Kris (Gloria Reuben) and an unexpected love interest in Alex (Utkarsh Ambud Kar), Merit's cozy-dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo insulated from the world. That remains the status quo until Merit's estranged grandfather Dale Tillman (Ed Harris)—who lives at the family's ancestral lake house—begins to lose his way mentally and is in need of the one thing he refuses... help.” The film is about a complicated friendship between Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Zoe (Natalie Morales). We know from the title that Zoe is dead, but she is very much alive in Merit’s daily life, as Merit obsesses about her. That particular plot point of Zoe’s death is carefully concealed until quite late in the film, but the scenes of Zoe’s intrusion into Merit’s daily life are both serious and comic. One line from the screenplay sums it up this way: “When you lose someone, you don’t know who you are without them.” GRANDPA DALE When Merit learns that Grandpa Dale Tillman (Ed Harris) has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s and may not be able to continue living alone at the lake house near Portland he loves Merit returns for a visit. The ghost of Zoe says, to Merit, in a sarcastic aside, “You didn’t tell me your Grandpa lived on the set of a horror movie.” Zoe will make other such snide remarks throughout Merit’s days.  Mom Kris (Gloria Reuben) wants to put Dale into Shady Acres, an assisted living facility. Dale spent 2 tours in Vietnam and left the service as a 22-year Lieutenant Colonel. It was her Grandfather Dale’s example that initially inspired Merit to join the Army. As the script tells us of our military, “You go out and do things that nobody else wants to do.” The sacrifice that our military men and women make to keep us safe and free is not always appreciated, as Lt. Col. Dale Tillman found out when he returned home from Vietnam. FAMILY DYNAMIC In addition to the universal problem of what to do about aging parents who are no longer capable of living alone, the film takes on the mother/daughter dynamic. Gloria Reuben’s largely unsympathetic character seems intent on sticking her father, Dale, in Shady Acres. When Merit takes Dale to the annual Fourth of July concert in the park and (temporarily) loses him, strife ensues. At the park, Dale and Merit accidentally encounter Alex (Utkarsh Ambud Kar), the son of the first Indian family in Portland who owns and operates Shady Acres.  Alex is romantically interested in Merit. Grandpa Dale does not react well to accidentally finding out that others have been deciding that he should leave the home he and his late wife established many years ago.  Dale temporarily goes missing, and Kris, Merit’s Mom, admonishes Merit on the phone, saying, “I love you, Merit, but you’ve made a mess.” THE GOOD Morgan Freeman adds his usual sense of gravitas as Dr. Cole, the leader of a PTSD therapy group that Merit is supposed to faithfully attend to avoid jail time for a minor altercation that may have happened due to her continuing stressful state of mind. Any time you’ve got Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris, you can count on good performances from true professionals. Neither made the Premiere at SXSW, but their work onscreen is up to par. In addition, the leads all turned into believable performances with nicely nuanced humor, primarily from Natalie Morales. The camera work shooting the beautiful area around the lake is well done; the park scene cinematography was particularly good (Matt Sakatani Roe). The music is handled well with an original song by Kaia Kater and Dan Romer and Music Supervision by Laura Katz. The use of Rihanna’s song “Umbrella” in an early portion of the film is particularly well-chosen when the two friends sing snatches of such lyrics as: “These fancy things will never come in between, You're part of my entity, here for infinity, When the war has taken its part, When the world has dealt its cards, If the hand is hard, Together we’ll mend your heart, Because.” “My Dead Friend Zoe” is a great feature film debut at SXSW from Director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes. Embracing Nature's Beauty: A Personal Approach to Interpretation
Who am I to interpret nature through art? It’s a question that often crosses my mind as I have learned about the world of interpretation. In this world, the boundaries between educator, artist, and steward blur into a seamless blend of connection and understanding.
For me, interpretation isn’t just a job; it’s a passion—an opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the natural world and share that wonder with others. It’s about more than just relaying information; it’s about sparking curiosity, appreciation, and respect for the beauty surrounding us.
Drawing inspiration from the insights of Enos Mills and Freeman Tilden, I aim to create experiences that transcend mere observation, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of exploration and connection (Beck et al., 2018). Through exhibits, trails, or digital platforms, I aim to provide spaces where nature’s beauty can be seen and felt—in every stroke of paint, every rustle of leaves, and every beam of sunlight.
But ultimately, it’s not about me. It’s about the visitors—their perspectives, experiences, and insights. As an interpreter, I facilitate, inspire, and encourage moments of reflection and discovery. It’s a collaborative process, a shared exploration of the intricacy of life that binds us together.
Interpreting “the gift of beauty” is a daily exploration, guiding me to experiment with diverse methods. I strive to balance creativity and authenticity, infusing exhibits with engaging elements while staying true to nature’s essence. Navigating between information and inspiration, I weave stories and experiences into each narrative, sparking wonder in people’s hearts. Each interpretation is unique and refined through trial and reflection. Inspired by nature’s wisdom, I aim to foster a deeper connection between people and the natural world, instilling appreciation, and stewardship. Through interpretation, I share the profound beauty of our planet, igniting positive change.
Through engaging stories, captivating visuals, and interactive activities, I strive to create environments where individuals can appreciate the beauty in their surroundings and connect with it on a deeper level. It’s about fostering a sense of wonder, gratitude, and responsibility toward the natural world we call home.
In the end, interpretation is a journey of discovery, growth, and connection. It’s about recognizing our place in the world and embracing the privilege and responsibility that comes with it. By adhering to the principles of interpretation, we can inspire others to see the world with fresh eyes—to appreciate the beauty in every corner, every crevice, and every living being that shares this planet with us.
So, who am I to interpret nature through art? I am an interpreter, yes but more than that, I am a facilitator, a communicator, and a fellow traveller on this journey of exploration and appreciation. Through interpretation, I hope to foster a deeper understanding and respect for the remarkable gift of beauty that surrounds us all.

Initial Research & Investigation - Emergent and Embedded Narrative Games
Emergent narratives are stories that are not forced by the developer, but are changed depending on the players interaction with characters and objects in the game. They are often unpredictable and offer a unique player's experience each playthrough. Some examples of games that feature emergent narratives are:
Tumblr media
Minecraft: Minecraft is a sandbox game that allows players to explore, build, and survive in a near endless, randomly generated world. The game has no goals or storyline that the player has to follow, which lets players create their own stories through their actions and choices. Players could build up their buildings, or they can focus on fighting and defeating the two bosses in the game.
Tumblr media
The Sims 4: The sims 4 is a simulation game that lets players create/customise and control AI people, or sims, and their daily lives. The game has no set objective, allowing the player full control over the sims lives. The player can cause the sims to get married, or die depending on the actions that they take. The sims can also act fully on AI, allowing the player to watch whilst mayhem occurs. The game's features a large range of events that the player must work around to reach their goal.
Tumblr media
Dwarf Fortress: Dwarf Fortress is a strategy game that includes city building, management, and death... The game provides players with creating and maintaining a settlement of dwarves in a randomly generated world. The game has no specific objectives, but the player has to support and maintain the dwarves personalities, skills and needs. Players can set each dwarves' a activity, or let them do as they please.
Tumblr media
Crusader Kings: Crusader Kings is a strategy game that puts the player in the position of a king in medieval Europe. The game puts the player in control over a noble family and its lands, requiring them to communicate with other NPC's to expand your empire. The game has no 'set' ending, but simulates the events that may of happened to the kind and their surroundings during that time. Players can decide the characters' actions and decisions, or let them act on their own.
Tumblr media
Rim World: Rim World is a sci fi simulation game that lets players manage a group of survivors who crash landed on a remote planet. The game has no goals that the player must strictly follow, but requires the player to follow up on the survivors needs, skills, and relationships. Players can assign the survivors tasks, or let them act freely.
Embedded narratives are stories that are near-fully set by the developer and are normally not controlled by the player actions. They often have a set path that must be followed. Some examples of games that feature embedded narratives are:
Tumblr media
The Last of Us: The Last of Us is a action/adventure game based on two characters called Joel and Ellie, two survivors of a zombie outbreak that happened across the USA. The game has a fixed storyline which is is told through scripted cutscenes and speech.
Tumblr media
BioShock: BioShock is a first person shooter game that takes place in a city called Rapture, but now is a ruin. The game has a set storyline, that is revealed through audio logs and radio messages.
Tumblr media
Half-Life 2: Half-life 2 is a sci fi first person shooter game that continues the story of Gordon Freeman, a scientist who fights against the Combine that have taken over Earth. The game has a set story, that is told through scripted sequences, dialogue, and cutscenes. The game's story is immersive and interactive, making the game interesting even though its a set story path.
Tumblr media
Portal: Portal is a puzzle/platformer game that requires the player to use a device that can create portals. The device is called the Portal Gun, and allows the player to create portals on specific surfaces, requiring the player to be strategic when it comes to the locations that the portals should be in. The game has a fixed storyline, that is told through the main Boss called GLaDOS.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy X: Final Fantasy X is a fantasy roleplaying game that follows the storyline of the main character called Tidus, who got Isekai'ed to another world called Spira. In this new world, Spira joins up with a summoner named Yuna on a quest to defeat a monster called Sin. The game has a set story that is told through cutscenes, dialogue, and flashbacks.
Out of all of these games, embedded narrative games are more like a movie that you are playing instead of watching. They are more interactive and sometimes feature more scenes and interactions than a emergent narrative.
