Hey, it’s International Vulture Day. Those of you who follow my resources don’t need a lecture on how important these birds are to the ecosystem. You are already uber fans! So, let’s shine a light on some of the cool ways we can improve welfare for vulture ambassadors with training. In this clip from some of my consulting work at the Dallas Zoo, you will see the training done with a breeding pair of King Vultures. What was really awesome about this work was that the adults began their training prior to breeding season, continued throughout nesting season, continued while their diet was doubled and they were feeding their chick, and as you will notice the grown chick began to participate in training by following the parents. The training helped keepers manage birds for day-to-day care and also allowed the chick to learn to step onto a scale and to voluntarily enter a crate. Who says breeding birds can’t participate in training? These two meerkats at the #dallaszoo are working the newest, hottest examples of current suricate fashion. Some of it, like those mud balls, are functional as well as fashionable! While you’ll often hear that meerkats prefer to utilize burrows created by ground squirrels, they’re highly skilled diggers who aren’t above digging their own complex tunnel systems.
