12 Days of Not-the-Usual Christmas Music, Day 3

So this is going to be me posting not-the-usual Christmas music, from the 20th through the 31st. I've wanted to do this for a while, just share songs that don't generally pop up on the Christmas radio loop. Some are funny, some are poignant, some are religious, some are secular. Just doing something pleasant at the end of the year.

Day 3: On Midwinter's Day by Damh the Bard

Now, if you don't just celebrate the solstice, but are a full-on neopagan, you may already be familiar with this one. I am not a pagan for many reasons, but I can still recognize a rousing melody when I hear one. The chorus of this one makes me want to swing a mead cup every time, and it has warm ecumenical lyrics to it that invite everyone into the circle of song. It's just a big, joyful tune and I wanted to share it.

I’ve listened to a couple of Damh The Bard’s songs about the Blodeuwedd myth and in both he makes Lugh out to be the Wiccan Horned God and honestly I think that’s really weird because Lugh traditionally doesn’t have any forest or animal motifs but instead is supposed to be the world’s greatest poet and craftsmen, I just don’t understand how Damh came to identify him with a nature god

AND I AM FINALLY DONE, OMG.

And I am actually so happy with how it turned out! In the end, I decided to go with an appearance that made it look as if Hiraeth and Gale were part of one of Gale's book (I can honestly imagine him doing something like this and just immortalizing a moment together and keep it in his book for keepsake).

What more to say aside that these two cinnamon rolls ABSOLUTELY deserve each other????

Also, fun fact about Hiraeth´s appearance: she usually wears a glamour to hide away her scales, but with Gale, she can definitely let her guard down and show them to him.

I like to imagine that this moment portrayed here happened after Hiraeth was finally free from her pact with her Patron, Titania, after absolving her duty to her and Damh (I will explain more once I manage to write her profile, which will come soon alongside Asra's) and she is *finally* free to just be Hiraeth.

So, OF COURSE, she is celebrating in the arms of the man she loves the most! <3

He is also on of the warmest and kindest people I've ever met. We planned our honeymoon around a concert he would play on Glastonbury Gardens, at the red spring.

Afterwards I approached him for an autograph and even though we never met, he greeted me as though we were friends who had known each other forever. He gives great hugs.

Man, something about Damh the Bard’s music really gets me. I heard a song performed by a local group not too long ago and made a ritual music playlist just so I could keep it nearby, but I just found his song Antlered Crown and Standing Stone about Cernunnos and it gives me such intense chills

Folky, boppy, bouncy stuff. Stomp-and-holler, clap-your-hands-and-say-yeah kinda shit.

But also that weird genre of music that sounds like it's floating towards you from a distance through the foggy woods and you feel vaguely in danger but not enough to leave.

Also pagan folk and rock.

And also the emo-y punk-y rock that made up all of my high school listening, for nostalgia's sake and because American Idiot (2004) is and will always be the best thing that ever happened to music.

(Spotify also keeps trying to show me more artists like Yugo Kanno and Taku Iwasaki, but that's because I cannot figure out how to tell the algorithm that while I'm sure those other artists are great, I really only listen to the first two because they did most of the soundtracking for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and I binge the shit out of those.)

Putting “Sabbats” by Edain McCoy newly as a 10 on my pain scale and a 0 on the PH scale. What a marvelously awful book 👌 they will really publish ANYTHING, huh?

I really should rework my book rating scale. 'cause I rate the witch books on a scale of 1-10, except that the way I do it is more like a PH scale, with 5 being smack in the middle and meaning "nothing gained, nothing lost", 0 being "You should actively avoid this book" and 10 being "You need to read this book because it will actually improve your life".

... wait, that's not like a PH scale at all, because both 0 and 10 would be very bad for your health.

Started listening to Damh The Bard a Welsh pagan songwriter, he’s done a couple good child ballad versions and he did an amazing narrative ballad about the birth of Taliesin, I saw he has a song about Blodeuwedd but the sample on iTunes didn’t make it sound narrative so I didn’t buy it
