Netflix Avatar the Last Airbender S1 - Overall Thoughts [SPOILERS]

I am a longtime fan of Avatar the Last Airbender. I did not watch it in its original 2005 run, but I discovered it in around 2010 after my good friend R.S. recommended it to me. It's been my #1 favorite TV show ever since and I have rewatched it more times than I can count. I was cautiously optimistic about NATLA.

Now, having watched the whole first season of NATLA, and looking at the season as a whole, I think the best word to describe it is uneven. I can't say that I loved it, and I can't say that I hated it. But there were things I really liked about it and things that really did not work for me. Overall, I enjoyed watching it -- if only to dissect what did and did not work about the adaptation -- and would want to watch more.

WHAT WORKED

Everything to do with Zuko and Iroh. I found myself going back through just to rewatch all of the Zuko and Iroh-related scenes. I thought Dallas Liu really nailed Zuko -- from tantrums about his journal being stolen to incredible action sequences to the boyish vulnerability of worrying about the laces on his gauntlets. He took an iconic character and made him his own. NATLA added some incredible scenes and lines to my favorite duo: Lu Ten's funeral (coupled with orchestral version of "Leaves from the Vine"); Zuko's first war council; Iroh choosing to go with Zuko on the boat; the 41st Division; Iroh putting a blanket on Zuko. And I liked that NATLA emphasized that Iroh needed Zuko in the wake of Lu Ten's death as much as Zuko needed Iroh after his mother left.

Daniel Dae Kim's interpretation of Ozai. Ozai in ATLA is kind of one-dimensional. Daniel Dae Kim's Ozai adds a deeper layer to him in that he genuinely seems to think he's doing legitimate parenting -- even going so far as to visit Zuko after burning his face and remarking, glibly, that he'll recover ("but he'll never heal," says Iroh). It adds an even more monstrous angle to his cruelty because Kim's Ozai seems to think he's doing it for his children's own good. This post perfectly encapsulates my feelings about why I thought the agni kai between Ozai and Zuko was an excellent addition to NATLA.

Zuko/Aang. These two bonding over goat hair brushes was the scene I never knew I needed. The way Aang managed to wrest a little smile out of Zuko in that scene before Zuko blew up at him for criticizing the Fire Lord? And the way that tied into the "Compassion is a sign of weakness" scene from the agni kai? Great character work.

WHAT DID NOT WORK

Dialogue. I already observed at length my dissatisfaction with the clunky, exposition-dumping dialogue in my episode-by-episode writeups. It certainly wasn't as bad as the Movie-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, but . . . there was no art or subtlety to it, and no trust in the audience. A disappointment.

The GAang did not feel like family. The lack of breathing room in the 8-episode season meant that all of the "filler" episodes that fleshed out the relationships between Aang, Katara, and Sokka were sacrificed. I am not saying NATLA needed to recapture each of the filler episodes. But they needed to build the foundational bonds between the main trio with showing not telling and they really didn't. They separated them for big chunks of 2 episodes. And, really, they just felt like traveling companions. That took all of the emotional heft out of, well, everything related to Aang, Katara, and Sokka. I mean, frankly, the kid actors did a better job establishing the "family" dynamic just by being themselves in their press interviews than the show did with the characters.

Aang did not run away from responsibility. I am not one of those people that's just mad that the show wasn't exactly like the cartoon. No. What I mean is, even putting aside the cartoon, even if you just look at NATLA itself: their own themes were undercut by never showing Aang actually running away from responsibility. Each avatar seemed to be berating Aang for doing something he was never actually shown to be doing.

Katara. I really don't think this one is on the actress. Katara felt like a fundamentally different character from ATLA's Katara. It's not to say an adaption is not allowed to have their own interpretation of a character, but... I just did not understand NATLA Katara. There was no passion, no rage, no overbearing nurturing. She was... I don't know what she was. Traumatized, yes, but nothing grew out of that trauma? Meek, until the plot demanded that she suddenly become a waterbending master without any guidance other than a waterbending scroll? The "younger sister"? More than any of the main characters, I'm not sure what NATLA was trying to say about Katara at all. And, as a result, I'm afraid the word to describe it might be uninteresting. And given that she is the heart and soul of Team Avatar, this one was really tough.

Despite the fact that a lot of NATLA did not work for me, I still enjoyed it because the things that did work for me, well, really worked. So. I'm here for all of the Zuko/Iroh scenes!

Alright. I've rewatched the trailer like 20 times by now and i've been processing it.

First things first: anyone that's gonna talk shit about Gordon Cormier is gonna have to go through me first. I've only had Gordon!Aang for a day and a half and if anything happens to him i'll kill everyone here and then myself got it?

Just look at him! This is the exact big eared cute little kid i wanted them to cast for Aang. He looks adorable and honestly his outfit is growing on me.

The glowing arrow looked cool as hell. I like that the light spread through his tattoo almost like veins. I'm still curious on how the full avatar state is gonna look, how they're gonna get the glowing eye effect. Please don't let it look goofy.

Is it better than the m night shyamalan appa? I guess. Does that mean it looks good? Well.... at least momo sort of looks cute instead of some folklore nightmare like in shyamalan's version. But also you can tell in this shot in particular that it's very green screen-y

Then we go over to the bending, the limited shots we have of it. Mainly firebending was shown (a little airbending too but kinda hard to get a stillframe for that one)

Idk how to feel about it. In screenshots it looks alright but the shots while they were moving looked a bit off, especially the one where zuko's kicking. We only got very limited shots and that's intentional. I feel like the bigger cgi fails are gonna show up once we get the full show. If the bending looked good all the time i feel like they'd be showing it off by now.

What i don't like, is how apparently they're gonna SHOW Zuko getting burned. Like sure in atla they didn't bc kids show and Nickelodeon wouldn't allow it, and netflix can take darker turns if they so please. But i personally always felt that scene made so much impact because we didn't see it. Iroh is telling it from his memory and he didn't look when it happened, so we don't see it either. It's like a courtesy the show extends to both Zuko and the audience. We just hear the harrowing scream, and that's enough to know how devastating it is. I don't need a dramatic overlook so we can see the whole thing in detail, netflix.

Another thing is the hair in some scenes.

Daniel dae kim looked better in that promo photo, bc here you can just see how the bulky goatie was glued on. And then Sokka's hair..... where's the ponytail? It's laying completely flat against his head... why? Is it bc that's Ian's hair and they didn't know what to do with it? Literally get a comb and tease that bitch. This is like the complete opposite of Jackson Rathbone's hair in the shyamalan version, and somehow that full maybelline ponytail makes more sense than this sad excuse of a tail. Either way at least Suki looked dope.

Another thing i found weird about the trailer is the narration. I think it's either Iroh's voice or maybe Gyatso's? (I haven't heard Iroh's actor talk yet so idk, but it felt like it was being said TO either Aang or Zuko) but the lines they gave him... it felt like some weird mumbo jumbo tbh. Something something about the past and present being the same and it's up to us to know the difference and be the difference? It's saying everything and nothing at the same time and it felt kind of out of place. They're probably saving the iconic opening narration done by Katara for the full trailer (i hope???) but still they could have just gone with music, or maybe just a few iconic existing lines?

The music? Fire. Nothing needs to be added there. Was i kind of hoping for a different soundtrack? Maybe a bit. But am i mad? Not at all. They clearly took the nostalgia route with the more epic version of the avatar theme, and i can only respect them for that.

So far, very mixed reviews for me. I'm morbidly curious and very nosy by nature though, so i'm absolutely watching.

Black characters of Marvel Comics

If you can't tell over the past few blogs, I grew up as a DC Comics fan, watching the cartoons like Batman the Animated Series, Static Shock, and Justice League Unlimited. We could even spend another week going over the black characters in DC's Independent Vertigo Imprint, black superheroes from the Indie Comics studio WildStorm, like Deathblow, or other black DC characters like Green Lantern John Stewart, Bronze Tiger, Steel, and Mr. Terrific. Instead, we are finally going over the black history of Marvel comics, all be it, briefly.

Marvel started out as Timely Comics in 1939 by pulp magazine publisher Martin Goodman to capitalize on the growing comic book and superhero market, creating Golden age superheroes like the Android Jim Hammond who was the Original Human Torch, Captain America, and the Sub-Mariner. Superheroes fell to the wayside after WWII, so in 1951 Timely Comics became Atlas Magazines, publishing Sci Fi and Adventure comics more than superheroes. One of their characters was Prince Waku of the Bantu, from the anthology series Jungle Tales, first released in 1954. During the early 1960s Stan Lee and artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko led Atlas Magazines into becoming Marvel Comics, their first black hero was not Black Panther but Gabe Jones, a soldier a part of Nick Fury's Howling Commandos, coming out in Sgt. Fury #1 in 1963. The next character is the infamous Black Panther, T'Challa first leaped on the newspaper print in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966, inviting Marvel's first family to help him defeat the dastardly Klaw in his home country of Wakanda.

Three years later Captain America's sidekick Flacon flew to the page Captain America (1968) #117 in 1969, helping him defeat the Exiles and the Red Skull. Later, inspired by the Black Exploitation films like Shaft, and Superfly, Marvel published Luke Cage, aka Power Man, this one was a street level hero who patrolled the streets of Harlem and eventually partnered with the martial arts hero Iron Fists. Later in Power Man (1974) #24 Dr. Bill Foster's superhero alter ego Black Goliath was first introduced, a superhero who can become a giant and helped Luke Cage take on the Circus of Crime. A year later Marvel published Giant-Size X-Men #1, by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, the first appearance of heroes like Colossus, Nightcrawler, and the iconic mutant hero Storm. Not all of Marvel's characters in the 1960s and 70s were as iconic as Storm and Black Panther, one of the most niche characters over the years is Jericho Drumm, aka Brother Voodoo from Strange Tales #169 in 1973. Created by Len Wein, John Romita Sr., Stan Lee, and Roy Thomas, Jericho was a practicing psychologist, who visited his brother in Daniel in their home country Haiti. After Daniel died from the hands of a rival Voodoo priest, Jericho visited his brother's mentor Papa Jambo, becoming the hero Brother Voodoo.

Marvel has had many more black characters added to their roster over the years. For this project it feels important to add almost all of them throughout the 60s and 70s, regardless of their status as a hero, villain, or supporting role. By the mid to late 2000s it's important to mainly cover the bigger events, primarily ending on Miles Morales Spider-man for simplicity.

I just watched Now You See Me the other day and now I can't stop thinking about the pogues as the four horsemen.

John B is J Daniel Atlas (the standard above average street magician), Pope is Merritt McKinney (the mentalist), Kie is Henley Reeves (the escapologist*) and JJ is Jack Wilder (the slight of hand hustler).

The four of them pulling off crazy tricks and Robin Hooding, running from the FBI while being the most dramatic bitches possible. JJ faking his own death in a car crash. Look me in the eyes and tell me that doesn't match up perfectly. The only thing that doesn't match up is the unresolved feelings between Atlas and Henley, but we can just ignore that and replace it with the relationship between Lula and Jack in Now You See Me 2 and it becomes Jiara (using Lula as a swap for Henley but keeping it as Kie in this AU)

And then Now You See Me 2, imagine Arthur Tressler and Walter Mabry as Ward and Rafe. I think that's iconic.

Idk what to do with Sarah and Cleo in this AU (and idk if there are appropriate stand ins for Dylan Rhodes and Thaddeus Bradley) but honestly idc, the og four pogues as the four horsemen is so fun

*I say escapologist based only on her opening scene with the piranha tank because I didn't know what else I could give her as a title other than being 'the girl'

Dance First, the new movie from James Marsh, is out today.

Iroh’s voice actor (Greg Baldwin) and live-action actor (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) are getting together for jasmine tea!

After the announcement that Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (CBC/Netflix’s Kim’s Convenience and Disney+’s The Mandalorian) was cast as Iroh in Netflix’s upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Greg Baldwin, the voice of Iroh in the original animated ATLA Book Three: Fire, TLOK Book Two: Spirits and Book Three: Change, and Avatar Legends, reached out to him with an offer:

“‘While it is always best to believe in oneself…a little help from others can be a great blessing.’ I’m glad you’re here. Welcome. Perhaps we can share a cup of jasmine tea sometime, [Paul]?”

Paul replied:

“Thrilled and honoured by this. Thank you for your support and I’ll take you up on that offer to share some Jasmine tea!”

Greg replied:

“I look forward to the tea AND watching you bring Iroh to life!”

This is obviously pretty cool and nice to see, but also pretty notable. This is the first case of someone involved in the original animated series/Avatar Studios side of the Avatar franchise acknowledging the existence of the live-action series (with the exception of Daniel Dae Kim who is among the cast of both, something that will likely be the case with more actors as the cast grows). With so many of the cast and crew being fans of the original, and expressing so much love for it, it’s really heartwarming to see the bridge gapped for the first time, and fitting that it would be through Iroh.

Greg Baldwin took over the role of Iroh from the iconic Japanese voice actor Mako after the latter’s death, who originated the voice in ATLA Book One: Water and Book Two: Earth, and is also known in western animation for voicing Aku in Samurai Jack. When Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s casting was announced, he wrote the following tribute to Mako:

“Big shoes to fill by the late GREAT Mako. I hope to do honour and justice to this character while still making it my own. Grateful for this opportunity and excited to start.”

Filming of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series began on November 16th, but it seems that the parts featuring Zuko and Iroh haven’t started yet. Paul-Sun Hyung Lee said this a week ago:

“Dallas Liu, playing Zuko, I am so looking forward to working with him. We had a rehearsal today and he just blew me away. Blew me away.”

It’s currently unknown if Greg Baldwin will be reprising the voice of Iroh in Avatar Studios’ upcoming animated movies and shows.

Kanarielle started out as a self-insert. Her main influence nowadays is Eliza Cassan with Lenin following closely behind.

Esmir Sorano - Long Feng, Irene Engel, Cersei Lannister, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), Delilah Copperspoon, Olenna Tyrell, Almalexia;

Esmir practically made herself from ground up. With age, obviously, she was influenced by all the mentioned characters. Cersei though is her main icon. At first, she was more of Irene Engel, then gradually turned more and more gray. Maleficent pretty much made her do a 180.

Markus Sorano - Shuhei Hisagi, Daniel Murillo (Hollywood Undead), Prince Zuko, Ariel (the Little Mermaid 1989);

Mark is his own character that hadn't had massive influence on him from the outside, however, IDK how it happened, but his looks department is totally influenced by Danny Murillo.

Catherine Graves - Catherine Chun, Retsu/Yachiru Unohana, Meridia, Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Ursa (ATLA);

Unohana go brrrrrrrrrrr. Merged Unohana and Meridia into one and sprinkled some Luna for angst on top. Cath is a remix on Meridia from the roleplays I had with my friend.

Kara-Issur Sorano - Kemankesh (Muhteşem Yüzyıl);

Lmao, I just wanted my own Kemankesh.

Malcolm McCain - Percival Graves (Fantastic Beasts), David Sarif, Fire Lord Ozai;

Malcolm is the roleplay character my friend and I had that evolved from Molag Bal. We really loved Meridia/Bal ship, I think you can guess where it ended up being.

Visenya Quintillius - Marian Hawke (Humorous), Ty Lee (ATLA);

A knock off humorous Marian Hawke that somehow gained sentience and became annoying as fuck. She's what Livaen originally used to be personality-wise.

Livaen Sorano - Claudia Auditore, Sansa Stark, Mihrimah Sultan (Muhteşem Yüzyıl), Orihime Inoue, Hatice Sultan (Muhteşem Yüzyıl);

Livaen was made to be a background copy of Claudia Auditore that somehow managed to suck into herself some of Orihime's characteristics. With time, she was influenced by Sansa Stark, then Mihrimah and Hatice.

Meltem Esteban - Rangiku Matsumoto, Isabela (Dragon Age), Mistral (Metal Gear Rising), Tier Harribel;

Meltem was a Walmart Isabela till she suddenly grew a lot bigger than I intended. I love her so much.
