‘The Dog Knight’

Frankie Jude Bryant is a nonbinary middle school student who is dealing with identity, the usual academic challenges and, oh yes, trying to become the Dog Knight, a champion for humans and canines. Despite the presence of magical talking pooches, this journey of heroism and self-discovery feels grounded thanks to captions that get into the head of Frankie, who prefers they/them pronouns. On the first page, they think, “Do you ever feel like you don’t make sense?” Later, Frankie muses about their frenemy Dallas, who misgenders them: “She gets it wrong on purpose just to make a big deal about correcting it.” And when Frankie finds their tribe, “For the first time in a long time, I look in the mirror and I don’t feel a pain in the pit of my stomach.” Written by Jeremy Whitley, drawn by Bre Indigo and colored by Melissa Capriglione.

‘Marry Me a Little: A Graphic Memoir’

The cartoonist Rob Kirby chronicles his 2013 march down the aisle in Minnesota with his longtime partner, John Capecci. The story highlights where gay marriage stood at the time (each state was making its own rules before same-sex unions became the law of the land in 2015) and looks back at Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, who somehow were able to obtain a marriage license in Minneapolis in 1971. The personal recollections are powerful and honest: Rob remembers when he first casually used the word “husband,” which felt like “a small but genuine political act.” He also acknowledges the white, middle-class privilege that allowed him ambivalence about getting married. His ultimate conclusion: “Marriage does not define a relationship. Unless you want it to.”

‘Gatsby’

The messages of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” — about social status, love and chasing dreams — are revisited in the present with a racially and sexually diverse set of characters in their 20s. Gatsby is a Black tech millionaire looking for a love who got away, and Lu Zhao, the stand-in for Nick Carraway, is visiting from Singapore and summering on Long Island (where a $5,000-plus afternoon shopping spree highlights the casual wealth). The main characters are refreshingly blasé about their sexuality: Lu’s girlfriend, Alexis, asks, “How do you identify?” But Lu’s answer does not really matter as Alexis says, “I love being on this journey with you. I’m here for you no matter what.” Written by Jeremy Holt, drawn by Felipe Cunha and colored by Dearbhla Kelly. 

‘Hex Americana’

The cartoonist Bree Wolf spins a tale about auto racing, teen romance, monsters and ghosts. Flesh-and-blood Ken forms an unlikely alliance with Dante, who died in a previous race and haunts his car as a ghost. A successful partnership will allow Ken to compete in the annual Grand Prix and help Dante move on to the afterlife. The more than 300-page story packs in a lot of character growth, action, flashbacks and drama. The relationship between Ken and Karen, his mother, is particularly nuanced. Karen is supportive of her son, who is gay, but she struggles with how to correct her overbearing friend James when he makes thoughtless jokes about Ken. (Iron Circus Comics. Aug. 30.)

‘Death Drop: Drag Assassin’

The Gayborhood, as it is called in this five-part series, has seen better days. Thugs feel empowered to assault young gay men, and a drag queen named Lunaira has gone missing from the club Posterior Delusions. Residents have little faith in the local police. Enter Death Drop, a former hit man and current drag queen, who is pushed by Mother Henny, the hostess of the club, to find Lunaira. “She’s a queen of color who has been missing for more than two days,” Mother Henny says. “You do the math.” It helps that Death Drop and Mother Henny used to date. Let the investigation begin. Written by David Hazan and drawn and colored by Alex Moore. (Scout Comics. June 14.)

‘Turtle Bread’

Kim-Joy, a British baker and cookbook writer, teams up with the artist Alti Firmansyah for this story about Yan, who is struggling with low self-esteem and social anxiety. When Yan finds a local baking club, she is plagued by doubts about whether she will fit in or be liked, but she soon learns that everyone struggles in different ways. Yan eventually becomes confident enough to rally the club members to seek out and support one of their fellow bakers who needs it. Yan would qualify as an ally, but there are characters with significant roles in the story who are gay and lesbian. And there are recipes, including one that gives this story its title. (Comixology Originals. Available now.)

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I'd love to see Nero star in a game without Dante eventually.

Not in DMC6 necessarily, there's still a story to be told about Dante and Vergil in the Underworld, but I think Nero deserves a chance to prove that he can stand on his own (or at least stand with characters other than his uncle or his father).

I know a lot of people feel his moveset is too limited, and I do think there is room for his moveset to grow without losing what makes him distinct from his predecessors (plus, they can always make more Devil Breakers), there are ways to keep the game fresh and promote replayability without changing Nero's moveset.

They could make the game a lot less linear, for example. They don't have to go full God Of War about it - it could be as simple as including branching mission paths, reintroducing the connected level design of the previous games, or adding more secret missions and optional encounters.

Maybe it'd be cool to see a lower-stakes story, made of multiple unrelated smaller cases that can be played in any order, rather than one big world-threatening plot, with some interpersonal fluff and/or drama in-between. But at that point, you might as well just make another animated series about Nero and company, and tbh I would also like to see that if it were done well.

And speaking of encounters, they could add a lot more objects in the environment that Nero can interact with besides explosive barrels, maybe things he can use Buster to pick up and throw, or things that he can cut with Red Queen to alter the environment. Hell, I thought the Gyro Blades were a pretty fun inclusion in the combat encounters in DMC4, why not bring those back?

And there's absolutely still stories to be told about Nero - we don't know a damn thing about his mother, he has an entire home life that DMC5 didn't even touch on, and there's a lot of gaps in the lore to explore and expand into.

And difficulty settings! DMC already has a ton of those, but who's to say they couldn't add more? Or perhaps make them more modular, between things like enemy rosters, damage values, game speed, etc.

There are so many more ways to keep a DMC game replayable and fun besides providing multiple characters, or giving a character a thousand moves. I like Dante, and don't want to see him retired just yet, but I absolutely think Nero can hold a game on his own if he really got a chance.

I definitely want Mystreet to have more complex dynamics but I also really like that Gene and Dante had a good relationship because they never had the moment MCD Gene and Dante did. Before MCD Gene was put in jail, we know he and Dante had a good relationship, Gene only turned on Dante when he told the guards what he was doing. Plus PDH Gene swings wildly from being super intimidating and awful and evil to not even a mild threat, I’d much rather he just be a toxic drama queen like Laurence said instead of making him an even worse person by making him an abusive brother.

What I think would be more compelling would be Dante being in denial that Gene is a bad person to other people because Gene is only good to him and the shadow knights. His big brother who loves him and protects him and takes care of him? There’s no way he’s doing everything people are saying he is. There’s no way Aphmau’s being serious. It must be a different person. Or she has to be exaggerating. Or maybe she’s outright lying. There’s no way Gene would actually do that, it can’t be true.

I don’t like the redemption arc because of how it’s both too harsh and too soft. He doesn’t have to do much to earn their trust, but before that they all believe he’s guilty until proven innocent to the point where Travis says he’s a bad influence on ‘his little Dante’ and Katelyn proceeds to decide she’s going to get his job taken away. Over childish (I’m pretty sure she outright calls it this) vandalism.

Like it’s one thing to hate a guy for being a pos in high school, it is another thing to report him to the city, probably specifically to get him fired because she could’ve just called the cops on him.

yeah i don’t think them having a troubled relationship would fit in the context of mystreet for the reasons you stated. i just wish dante wasn’t so idk in denial about the fact gene can be a dick sometimes,, just feels unrealistic. anyone would want to defend their sibling but I wish we saw them butt heads or bicker more like brothers. although i get why dante being in denial could be compelling,, as someone with an older brother i just can’t understand how dante would develop this picture perfect idea of gene.

i also like gene just being a pos who then eventually grew out of it and matured but can still be dramatic sometimes. he doesn’t need a redemption arc he just is like that lol. i think that’s why people like him. he wouldn’t be funny if he wasn’t a bit of a dick. you could spin it as dante reconciling with the fact that maybe his friends don’t like gene (and won’t ever like him) but he’s still his family and he knows him better than anyone else. that’s all that matters.

About RPF and fandom is selective

Might get cancelled over this but i no longer give a fuck, the subject of debate over RPF celebrity fanfic made me realize that an overwhelming amount of discourse war this or that on fandom doesn't fucking matter and just something blown out of proportion because people like outrage/drama or riding high horse. I think i have seen a lot of people saying that all kind of RPF is disgusting and bad blah blah but NOBODY bat an eye when Hollywood is making BUTT LOADS of money from RPF all the freaking time!! Hell a lot of people even latch into RPF fandom like The Great or OFMD. Bridgeton itself can be considered as an RPF with the Queen Charlotte plot and now new spin-off show.

Also when someone say "Well those RPF are about dead people." You know that SNL parody about public figure and political satire comic is RPF too right? The Simpsons have RPF episodes about living people, hell freaking minions have Lizbeth II added to the movie when she's alive.

Yet NOBODY were having an outrage about it.

And it's just weird to write RPF fanfic about nonpublic figure. But for RPF about celeb who are adults, people doesn't actually really know those celebs and mostly just using the name and public persona. There's an F in RPF fanfic for a reason. Also celeb fanfic on AO3 or whatever are not for mainstream consumption. It's niche, on the internet and tagged.

Also one of the holy rule of writing celeb RPF is TO NOT show the fanfic to the person like ever. Which means the public figure won't ever see them unless they deliberately went into the rabbit hole
